VOLUNTEERISM: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? By Sarajenie Smith, Marketing Content Manager, Volunteer Center of McHenry County Merriam – Webster’s dictionary defines volunteerism as “the act or practice of doing volunteer work in community service”. But is that truly what is means to us…to those who volunteer? I would say, no. As someone who has actively volunteered and participated in community service over the years, I half-heartedly disagree with the above definition. Volunteerism to me is taking time out of my day to show my appreciation to my community and those who service it. Volunteerism is not donating financially…that’s taking the easy way out. It’s actively participating in the efforts of an organization within your community to show your apSarajenie Smith preciation and support. It’s lifting boxes, writing grants or even reading stories to children…that’s what it means to me. So, what does volunteerism mean to you? I spoke with a few members of the community to find out what their thoughts were and here’s what they said. “Volunteerism means supporting an organization by giving whatever they are lacking to get a job done. I’ve volunteered time and money to help organizations but the most impactful experiences are those where I am actively involved”. Carl Voltaire, Lakemoor Resident. “Volunteering is lending a hand to those in need, making a difference in the health and wellness of a community,” Executive Director Volunteer Center McHenry County, Rebecca Stiemke. Overall volunteerism means helping and supporting your community, getting out and helping those who help you. Looking for an opportunity to get more involved? Contact the Volunteer Center of McHenry County.
