Chairman's Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY OAM, CHAIRMAN

We have some big things happening at the club and our associated venues in 2018 as we welcome another club to our family, we watch the Flinders Centre move into the completion stages and we celebrate our 60th anniversary.

WELCOME AUBURN We recently amalgamated with Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club, which means all of our members now have access to a sixth club with great facilities and wonderful staff. This venue has weekly activities, dining and a casual outdoor area that overlooks the courts of the adjoining tennis club, and I encourage all of you to head over for a visit.

FLINDERS CENTRE It’s full steam ahead inside the Flinders Centre at the moment, with the internal fit out taking place in the lobby, and the first two floors. Planning is also underway – pending council approval – for the new rooftop bar, which will offer spectacular views of the city and surrounding suburbs, in a modern, classy and open-air setting.

Bankstown Bowls is gearing up for its annual Mixed Bowls ANZAC Day fundraiser for Legacy, which I will be taking part in. It’s such a great event to be a part of and I would love to see you all down there on 25 April for a special commemoration service, a meal and a few games of bowls.

SENIORS WEEK The 2018 NSW Seniors Festival will be held from Wednesday 4 April to Sunday 15 April with the theme – Lets Do More Together. This event gives seniors the opportunity to try new things and remain active and engaged in our local community, with hundreds of events and special offers. Bankstown Sports will be hosting the annual Gala Concert on Sunday 8 April in The Grand Ballroom, and we have some great entertainment lined up for the event.

ASSOCIATED VENUES

THE THEATRE

We recently marked one year since The Acres Club joined the Bankstown Sports family. The venue has come such a long way since we first amalgamated, with new décor and styling, a new food offering, street food events – which have been extremely popular, and the current overhaul of the outdoor space to make way for a special dining and entertainment precinct.

We also have a great line up of entertainment at the club over the coming months including The Sun Records All-Stars which celebrates rock ’n’ roll in the 50s, Desperado – A tribute to the Eagles, and The Proms – A Musical Spectacular, which salutes the famous BBC Proms concerts of London’s Royal Albert Hall. See Bankstownsports.com/whatson for more details and tickets.

We also have plans to upgrade the outdoor area at Birrong Sports to give our members and guests more space to enjoy a meal or some drinks in the sunshine.

PEGGY LONG

WELFARE REPORT March, April and May 2018

It was sad to learn that Peggy Long passed away on 29 November 2017. I had the

privilege of knowing Peggy for many years. She was born in Lakemba and went to school locally, spending all of her life in the City of Bankstown. She was married to life member John Long, who was a former President of the Bankstown Sports Club from 1981 to 1984. Peggy joined the Bankstown Sports Ladies Bowling Club at Yagoona, and was their Secretary. Later in the 1990s she served as their President until the club closed in 2002. Subsequently in 2014, she became President of the Bankstown Sports Women’s Bowling Club and I know that they will miss her. Peggy was a foundation member of the Bankstown Chester Hill Ladies Probus Club, serving on the committee until the end, and when she passed away she was their Vice President. Peggy also served as a weekly volunteer at Bankstown Hospital for well over 20 years, making a significant contribution. She will be fondly remembered by many.

HAPPY EASTER I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a safe and happy Easter. We have plenty of events on at the club over the Easter long weekend (Friday 30 March to Monday 2 April) if you’re looking to enjoy a meal with loved ones, catch up with the Easter Bunny or watch our annual wood chopping show in the Rainforest Lounge. I look forward to seeing you at the club soon.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: Raymond Dean, Denis Buckley, Ronald Thompson, Paul Schumann, Peggy Long, Cecil Taylor, Adell Mills, Imants Liepa, Danny Melnyk, Moira Fisher, Henry Long, George Douglas, Edward Attard, James Moorhead, Bruce Crawley, Marie Kenneally, Eugenia Wolynko, Michael Hughes, Richard Wren, Axelle Marion, Sydney Cootes, Barry Kingman, Gertrude Schneider, Teresa Nieoczym and Carmine Spidalieri. The following member was reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Norma Grant.

E-Sports

BAR & LOUNGE Bankstown Sports has just unveiled its newest entertainment precinct, but it’s a little different to what you’re used to… You may have heard the term ‘E-Sports’ before, but you weren’t quite sure what it meant or what it was. If you know someone who plays PC, Xbox or Playstation games, then it probably sounds very familiar. Generally speaking, E-Sports is the playing of PC or Console based games, and it’s a trend that’s sweeping the world. E-Sports tournaments are being held as huge stadium and arena events with competitors battling it out for hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money. It’s even been added as an official event at the Olympic Games*.

4

Bankstown Sports InTouch

Bankstown Sports has jumped onboard the E-Sports phenomenon, bringing the concept to our own members and guests, right here in the club. We have created the brand Platform Zero E-Sports (PZE), which we are using to promote our new E-Sports events at our venues. In August last year, we began hosting weekly E-Sports competitions on Thursday evenings, where players register their interest and play against each other on our Xbox consoles. These events have been hugely popular and we have been at capacity most weeks.

Editorial

Then in November, we held the first Bankstown Sports FIFA 18 Tournament which was a huge success. We had over 500 participants and hundreds more spectators pack into The Grand Ballroom to watch players battle it out on the E-Sports football pitch. We gave away $10,000 in cash and prizes and the feedback we had from guests at the event was overwhelmingly positive. Bankstown Sports General Manager Andrew Kelly, has been working with a number of staff who have experience in this field, as well as external organisations, to get it off the ground. “The whole concept for PZE is all about building E-Sports at a grassroots level and offering people a unique opportunity to play their favourite games in a group setting, rather than at home on their own. That’s something that doesn’t exist anywhere else at the moment”. “We want to provide a space to get the community together where traditionally e-sports is played at home, online. Just like the club is here in the community to bring people together, this is the same idea; to get groups of friends together to interact with one another, and grow the sport”.

As a result of the success we’ve had so far, we have expanded our E-Sports offering at the club and we want you to be involved! We have transformed part of The Loft into the new PZE Bar, which is a dedicated space for our E-Sports events and future tournaments. There are nine TV screens permanently mounted to the wall which are all connected to Xbox consoles, and we are looking to install several PC’s in the same area so we can run a variety of competitions for our gaming fans. To celebrate the new venue, we are holding a launch event in March, which will involve several gaming tournaments and free play, and gives our members and guests a chance to come and see what it’s all about. On Saturday 17 March, there will be a CS:GO PC tournament and then free play on the consoles with a variety of games available to try. On Sunday 18 March, we will run competitions for Tekken 7 and FIFA, with a first prize of $500 and a second prize of $200 cash for each tournament. There will also be a hot lap competition for Forza that you can all get involved in!

Following the launch weekend, our Thursday night FIFA tournaments will continue, and we will roll out a weekly Tekken tournament on Friday nights, with plans to expand on this based on demand for other game titles. Andrew says the club wants to be a part of transitioning grassroots E-Sports through to a higher level. “We want to start that competitive scene that’s not available in Sydney or Australia at the moment, to get good gamers from the grassroots level of their bedrooms and loungerooms, to the professional level. At the moment, there is no pathway to make that transition, so we are working with outside organisations to try and set that set up”. “One of those pathways is potentially the Olympic Games, which will be in 2020 in Tokyo and 2024 in Paris. We want to be part of setting that up and potentially produce some future Olympic stars, right here in the club”. For more information about PZE and our upcoming E-Sports tournaments, visit BankstownSports.com/pze *Only a demonstration sport at this stage. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Welcome!

Auburn Tennis Club Bankstown Sports has amalgamated with another great club in Sydney’s west, with Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club joining the family. The Bankstown Sports Club family has expanded to six clubs as we welcome Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club to the group. The venue has been struggling to make ends meet in recent years, and made contact with us in late 2016 about a possible merger. The venture was formally approved by the state government in December 2017. Auburn Tennis Club has been located at 181 Chisholm Road in Auburn for almost 50 years, servicing the local community and providing a casual meeting place for locals to enjoy a meal and a few drinks. It has a proud history and is very popular with the locals with weekly activities, a dining area and a casual outdoor area overlooking the courts of the adjoining tennis club. The facilities at the venue have been well-maintained and recently, they underwent a small makeover, updating their décor and bar area with bright and vibrant colours, to give it a more modern look. Auburn Tennis Club is open from 10am everyday and there’s a courtesy bus that runs every Friday and Saturday night from 5pm. Phone 9646 3736 for bookings.

Congratulations

JOHN MURRAY OAM Our Bankstown Sports Club President was recognised at the Australia Day Honours 2018, with an Order of Australia Medal, for his services to the community of Bankstown. For all those who know him – and if you ask the man himself – John Murray is just your average, knock-about bloke from Bankstown. ‘Nothing special’ he says. John has been a well-known face around Bankstown for decades. He was born and raised here, and ran a successful spare parts business on Milperra Road for many years. He has been a member of Bankstown Sports Club since 1962 – our President since 2006 – and is also a Life Member. As well as having an incredible impact on our club over the years, he has also been heavily involved in many other community initiatives, and has dedicated much of his life to volunteering. On Australia Day this year, he was recognised for his contribution to the Bankstown Community, with an Order of Australia Medal. John says while the award was unexpected, he is honoured and humbled to receive it. “I hope it inspires other people to get up and do something. There are plenty of times when people need help, and you don’t have to do everything all at once. There are things like Meals on Wheels, or you can even go and mow your elderly neighbour’s lawn. I’ve been looking after my neighbour’s cows for about 8 years, because I know it helps her out”. “All of us living in Australia are privileged and blessed to live in such a beautiful country. I consider it my duty to volunteer and make a contribution wherever I can”. John was introduced to volunteering at the tender age of 7, by a local lady who was a member of the Red Cross. She was fundraising for our troops who were fighting overseas in World War 2. In January 1988, he joined the Cobbitty Bush Fire Brigade and would go on to

volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service for over 30 years. He helped fight bushfires, attended serious car accidents and light plane crashes, and helped with the clean-up after storms and natural disasters. As he got older and when he could no longer be on the front line, he then joined the catering team for the RFS. “We used to drive around with a food truck and feed the volunteers who were fighting fires. We also used to feed the police if they were in the area investigating a crime. Basically, we helped anyone who needed help in the community – whether it be a fire or natural disaster – we really enjoyed helping people”. As well as his RFS duties, John was an active member of the Bankstown Lions Club for 10 years, and ran many fundraising initiatives and community events. He has also been heavily involved in raising money for several Sydney hospitals. One of his grand-daughters was born with Rett Syndrome – a rare genetic disorder – so he and his wife Lily devoted a lot of time and effort to raise over $1.5 million for The Children’s Hospital in Westmead, to fund research into the condition. But it wasn’t just family that he offered to help. “There was a lady in Cobbitty who had Leukaemia and she wanted to do something to raise money to try and support the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where she was being treated. So, I joined in. Over the 10 years that I was involved, we ran bush dances and auctions, and we raised a lot of money”. John is an incredible role model for our staff, members and guests and we would like to congratulate him on this accolade. Bankstown Sports InTouch

WHAT’S

the latest...

The brand-new Flinders Centre commercial tower is set to open in a few months, bringing state-of-the-art A-grade office space to the heart of Bankstown. If you glance across the Bankstown CBD skyline at the moment, you can’t miss the many signs of progress. With multiple construction projects taking place and huge cranes dotting the cityscape, it’s exciting to see how our community is growing and changing to plan for the future. Among the new additions is the Flinders Centre 9-storey office tower, located on Restwell Street, which boasts efficient and sustainable facilities with the added resources of Bankstown Sports Club, as well as incredible views of Bankstown, the greater west, and the Sydney CBD. In December last year, we held a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony to mark the end the structural phase. This is a traditional practice that can be traced back to ancient Scandinavian times, where a tree is placed atop of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits who may have been displaced by construction. Usually,

this tree would be left to die so it could be cut up and used for firewood, but ours will be relocated to the garden area of the Bankstown Sports administration offices. The internal fitout for the Flinders Centre main foyer is underway, with chic, modern décor providing a professional yet comfortable meeting point for tenants and guests. It will also feature a convenience store, commercial space and lounge area, as well as direct access to the club and all amenities. Levels 1 and 2 are also taking shape and its anticipated that UFC Gym, Flinders Centre Early Learning School and Bankstown Sports Administration will move into their new spaces from June. We have also proposed plans for a new rooftop restaurant and bar to be located on Level 10 of the Flinders Centre. The venue will be stylish and modern, with views of the city to the east, and of greater Sydney to the west.

It will be open-air, with a roof covering certain areas so we can still accommodate for guests in poor weather. The focal point of Level 10 will be a trendy bar in the middle of the floor. There will be fun, trendy areas to dine, or just relax and enjoy a craft beer or cocktail in one of our private cabanas, lounges or seating around fire pits. Pending council approval, we are hoping the new rooftop restaurant and bar will be open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, catering for everything from casual dinners, business meetings, Friday evening drinks and special events. We can’t wait to see the office tower come to life and we’re looking forward to hearing your feedback. For more information on Flinders Centre, visit flinderscentreleasing.com.au

Panania Scouts celebrate

65 Years

Bankstown Sports is proud to support the 2nd Panania Scout Group with a financial contribution towards an upgrade of their clubhouse, through ClubGRANTS. The art of Scouting has a long history dating back to the start of the 20th Century when Lord Robert Baden-Powell held the first ever Scouts camp on Brownsea Island, off the Dorset Coast in England. Back then, young men were taught how to hunt in the woods, how to fend for themselves and how to give themselves an advantage if they ever found themselves on the front line of a battlefield. Times have changed a lot since then, and while today’s scouts may not be going off to war, they are still being taught skills of observation, resourcefulness and survival through some of the oldest and best-known programs for young people around the world. The 2nd Panania Scout group was first registered on 18 March 1952 and is one of the oldest Scout Groups still operating in the southwest region of Sydney. The group regularly designs and develops different crafts, games and badge workshops for its young members to challenge them and develop their leadership skills. The Scouts are taught the value of embedding ‘Duty to Self’, ‘Duty to Others’ and ‘Duty to God’ as their moral compass. In the 2015-16 round of ClubGRANTS, Bankstown Sports Club supported the 2nd

Panania Scout Group with $11,320.35 so they could repair the roof of their scout hall and re-lay the floor, which was beginning to rot and had become quite dangerous. On Sunday 5 November 2017, as part of their 65th birthday celebrations, the renovations were unveiled in front of more than 80 guests. Bankstown Sports Vice President Richard Phillips was on hand to officially dedicate the new floor, while special guests of the event were made honorary members of 2nd Panania Scout Group and were presented with scarves. Among the attendees were Michael Baden-Powell, the grandson of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, his wife Joan, Chief Commissioner of Scouting NSW Neville Tomkins, Federal Member for Banks David Coleman MP and Canterbury Bankstown Councillor Steve Tuntevski. 2nd Panania Scout Group Leader Lionel Pascoe says this funding has secured their future in the area. “The grant by Bankstown Sports has ensured that the Scout Hall is now a safe place for the youth of the Panania area.” For more information on the 2nd Panania Scout Group, visit their website https://2ndpanania.wordpress.com/ Bankstown Sports InTouch

THE BREWHOUSE

HAS EXPANDED! Basement Brewhouse has been open for 18 months and is now a premier destination for craft beer in Sydney’s west. We’ve just introduced two new serving tanks to keep up with high demand. The Brewhouse has been steadily growing in popularity since its opening in November 2016, with over 25 craft and boutique beers on tap including 10 of our own, which have been brewed in our very own microbrewery.

or get inspiration from what I have been seeing around at other venues”.

Our members and guests are loving the beers we are creating and brewing in the Brewhouse, and due to their growing popularity, we have found the need to expand our capacity and storage space. We have introduced two new beer serving tanks which lead directly to our taps behind the bar, which are able to hold and serve Basement Brewhouse beers after they have been transferred from our brewing tanks.

“Our brewing process begins with loading wort in into the fermentation vessel and pumping the water in for it to then go through a 7-day fermentation. After that, we dry hop for 48 hours to add flavour and aroma, and then we use finings to improve the clarity. Next, the carbonation starts. This process – depending on the beer – typically takes 14 to 15 days, however lagers take longer”.

The serving tanks are large copper vessels which are situated at the end of the bar, near the sunken lounge. Each tank holds approximately 1000L of beer – the equivalent of 20 kegs – and they’re already hooked up to our beer pipes, which means we can call on them for fresh, cold beer, whenever we need it. Head brewer Mark Neal has helped create many of our in-house beers and says the range and variety at Basement Brewhouse keeps him very busy. “Craft beer is really interesting because you can basically make whatever you want. It is not hard to pick a new beer to brew, I take suggestions from what has been selling well

Mark says despite his many years of brewing craft beer, he still loves the whole process.

Due to the success of our Brewhouse beers, they are now being distributed to our associated venues at Baulkham Hills Sports, The Acres Club and Bankstown Bowling Club where they are proving to be popular. Our beers are also available to other pubs and clubs around the state through online hospitality wholesaler CLUBCO, which delivers within 24 hours. We have just added another Brewhouse beer to our range; it’s a New England IPA, which is generally smoother than a traditional IPA, with a ‘fruit bowl of flavour’. Asian dining

AT THE CLUB Peking Sq. marks a milestone and releases a range of lunch specials, and Lucky Cheng’s launches a delicious new menu!

PEKING SQ. It’s been a successful first year of operation for the latest addition to our Asian dining precinct, with customers loving our signature handmade noodles and dumplings, and of course, our Peking Duck dishes which are made fresh in-house. We’ve gathered plenty of feedback since the restaurant opened in December 2016, and apart from loving the impressive styling and authentic décor, our freshly roasted Peking Duck has been the most popular item. The live mud crab with ginger and shallots served with pan-fried egg noodles, has been one of the top dishes as well. You can also get Peking Sq. delivered to your home or office now! We have partnered up with UberEats so our members and guests can enjoy a selection of delicious starters and mains, even when they aren’t in the club. To view the Peking Sq. UberEats menu, visit www.ubereats.com and select Bankstown as your delivery destination. Then search for Peking Sq. and select from our list of dishes.

THE SUN RECORDS ALL-STARS Celebrate the birth of Rock 'n' Roll in the 1950s, tracing the music from its humble roots in Memphis, Tennessee, to its dramatic peak worldwide. Sun Records was founded by legendary American producer Sam Phillips in 1952, and became the launch pad for many Rock ’n’ Roll greats including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison. The Sun Records All-Stars comes to Bankstown Sports direct from the US, featuring the talents of four well-known tribute artists performing the hits produced at Sun Records, mixing witty and interesting dialogue to create a unique experience that is engaging, entertaining and informative. The show is presented in two parts; the first half of the performance recaps the story of the label and features hits such as It’s Alright Mama, Blue Suede Shoes, Folsom Prison

Blues, Great Balls of Fire, I Walk The Line and more. The second half of the show looks at the expansion of the music and the artists, with songs like Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook Up, Ring of Fire, and medleys from Little Richard and Chuck Berry. The Sun Records All-Stars captures the music, the imagination, the passion and the magic of the Sun Records phenomenon, and promises to be a truly enjoyable experience for all. Join us on Saturday 24 March! Tickets are $45 and can be purchased online at BankstownSports.com/live-shows or from main reception.

Serving our community! Bankstown Sports Bowls Club is preparing for its annual Mixed Bowls ANZAC Day fundraiser for Legacy, and some of our members have been very busy getting everything ready. Marcus Kearns has been a member of Bankstown Sports Bowls Club since 1985 and is the current Secretary/Treasurer there. Over the years, he has held several committee positions and has acted as a bowls mentor for new members and guests, devoting a lot of his time to getting the community involved with the club.

“ANZAC Day to me is a day to reflect and appreciate what tremendous sacrifices the members of our armed services made to help keep this country safe for all of us, for generations to come”.

In 2017, he was acknowledged for his service to the club with a Service to Sport Medal for his 34 years of service as the Secretary/Treasurer of both Bankstown Sports Yagoona and Bankstown Bowls Club.

“Most of our members usually attend and some bring their families. We are hoping to attract more people from the local community this year, as it really is a day to celebrate together”.

Marcus has been involved with the club’s ANZAC Day commemorations since they began in 2013, assisting with the official commemoration ceremony, the friendly bowls matches and the lunch that follows. He says ANZAC Day is one of the most important dates in the calendar for him.

Last year, the event raised $4,720 for Legacy and the club is hoping to top that figure this year. For more information about the event, please contact Bankstown Bowls Club on 9790 0176, or just come along and join in the fun!

Marcus is hoping for a record turnout this year and wants to encourage everyone to come along and take part.

T R O P E R S T R O SP WE SHARE THE NEWS FROM OUR SPORTING CLUBS

Supporting our

SPORTING CLUBS Every year, Bankstown Sports conducts several rounds of funding grants for its associated sporting clubs, and many of them have just received a cash injection to assist them in their upcoming seasons. Bankstown Sports Club is proud to be associated with 43 local sporting clubs. In a recent round of funding grants, we contributed over $175,000 to help with the overall operations of these clubs. This funding assists our grassroots sporting clubs and provides participation opportunities for junior and senior sporting players in our local community. Bankstown Sports Men’s Golf Club received financial support for their seniors’ strategy, which encourages their senior golfers to stay actively involved in the sport. The Golf Club conducted a raffle at the beginning of the year to help raise money for this project, with Bankstown Sports contributing towards the initiative as well. Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club also accepted a contribution towards the cost

of registration fees, ground hire, participation trophies and presentation ceremonies. Bankstown Sports Touch received funding for their annual State Cup which is held in Port Macquarie, with the cost of hiring a marquee for the event covered by the Sports Club. Baulkham Hills Netball Club put the money they received towards participation trophies, premiership jackets and presentations to celebrate the end of a great season. Our contribution to Bankstown Sports AFL Club will go towards covering the cost of participation trophies and lighting fees, which facilitates night time games. Bankstown Sports Ladies Golf will now be able to engrave their end-of-season presentation trophies, and Greenacre Bowling Club will continue to hold their social games,

Bankstown Sports Mixed Indoor Bowls and Mixed Darts received funding for their championship prizes, and Baulkham Hills Football Club – who have successfully retained large registration numbers each season – received financial assistance to subsidise the registration costs for junior players and cover ground hire fees. These contributions will be put to good use by our associated sporting clubs, all of which are entirely run by volunteer committees and club officials. Thinking about giving

HOCKEY A GO? Bankstown Sports Hockey Club has a long and proud history within our local community. The organisation recently celebrated its 70th anniversary, and attributes a lot of its success to being able to continuously evolve over the years to meet the needs of its members. The club has a strong family culture and a focus on sportsmanship and growth, with both social and elite teams in men’s and women’s divisions, as well as the junior league. As with any sport, there are many benefits of playing hockey, whether it’s for recreation or professional competition. Games are fast-paced with constant movement, which makes it a great activity to include in your weekly exercise regime, and because of the start-stop nature of the game, the cardio benefits are huge. Hockey is a great muscular strength workout and can improve your endurance, coordination and balance. As well as the physical benefits, hockey also builds teamwork, enhances mental strength and improves communication. Barry Deer joined Bankstown Sports Hockey Club at the age of 10 and is now a Life Member.

He says it’s been incredible to watch the evolution of the sport over the years. “The highlight of being involved with the club for such a long period of time has been seeing the progression of games from grass fields in the 1960s at Jensen Oval at Sefton, to playing on AstroTurf at The Crest. Lifelong friendships have been made over the years from playing and there is a place for everybody to enjoy themselves. Winning is nice but having fun is better.” Bankstown Sports Hockey Club’s Publicity Officer Paul Bryant, believes there is one thing that sets them apart from other clubs. “The family atmosphere is what makes us stand out. We have families playing throughout the club, fathers in the same team as their sons, and mothers, daughters and siblings all have the opportunity of playing together. Hockey is a very inclusive sport.” If you would like more information on Bankstown Sports Hockey Club, contact their Secretary at the Club on secretary@bankstownhockey.org.au or visit www.revolutionise.com.au/bankstownhockey

CHANGING OF THE GUARD “In 2008, our club travelled to Tamworth to participate in the State Pennant finals. Much to our surprise, we won the competition. I think that was one of my greatest memories during my time with the club."

54

Bankstown Sports InTouch

For over 20 years, Elaine Fearnside, Shirley Frost and Margaret Bodle have been active members of the Birrong Ladies Bowls Club. They have all been part of the committee in some way, helping out with the weekly running of bowls games, and ensuring the future of their club. At the end of last year, there was a changing of the guard, and these three ladies handed over their badges to other members, who would take on the leadership responsibilities into the future.

of them were there for the social aspect of the club and not for the bowling games”. Elaine joined in 1994 after a friend convinced her to get involved, and she ended up being the Club’s Secretary for almost 20 years. “In 2008, our club travelled to Tamworth to participate in the State Pennant finals. Much to our surprise, we won the competition. I think that was one of my greatest memories during my time with the club."

We caught up with Elaine, Shirley and Margaret who shared some fond memories.

Lorraine Smith has taken over the role of Secretary from Elaine, and says she’s excited about her new duties.

Margaret and Shirley both joined the club in 1973 and were heavily involved in organising social outings for the group. Margaret took on the role of Club Treasurer and Shirley was Club President for a number of years. Shirley says she has seen plenty of things change during her time.

“I see the role as one to communicate with the members and club management to make sure the club continues to prosper and grow. It involves keeping accurate records and working closely with other members of our committee.”

“Particularly the uniforms. I remember when I first joined it was compulsory for female bowlers to wear white stockings and white skirts, that had to be 15 inches off the floor. Over time, there has been a steady decline in participation. Back in the day, there were 128 players. Last year (2017), we only had 21 players, and many

“Times have changed now and the majority of the ladies who participate also work, so we need to work out a solution to move forward to suit everyone’s schedules.” If you would like to get involved with Birrong Ladies Bowling Club, contact Lorraine Smith on lsmith62@bigpond.com or 0407 912 788.
