While creating the second edition of the Joburg Style Shopping Guide, the good news arrived of Joburg being the most visited city on the African continent for a second year running (according to the Mastercard Global Destination Index 2014). We like the synchronicity, and not just because this edition is sponsored by Joburg Tourism. Being the most frequented city in Africa is a big deal not only from a commercial point of view. For decades, African destinations such as Cairo and Casablanca boasted a much more historical and romantic appeal compared to Joburg. Even Cape Town, with its mountain, beaches, vineyards and laidback lifestyle, overtook it at one point as a destination of choice for foreign visitors. Joburg, as we all know, has a unique dynamism and energy. Its transformation from a dysfunctional apartheid-era metropolis to a truly world-class African destination with huge public appeal is already reaping rich rewards, even though the process is still gathering pace. The burgeoning confidence of the city and its people is evidently becoming palpably attractive. And what pleases us immensely, from a shopping perspective, is that visitors from, say, London or Lagos, may not only be dazzled by the glitz of Sandton City (arguably the most glamorous mall on the continent), but be drawn to the growing number of gentrified inner city nodes such as Maboneng Precinct and several Boutique Centres where emphasis is placed on unique stores and artisanal skills. These one-of-a-kind shopping experiences are often complemented by weekly markets selling fresh organic produce and are open to traders whose goods cannot be found in the sterile confines of most same-old, same-old malls. Weighed down as we are in these times by a deluge of faceless manufactured goods from China, it is an absolute delight to experience something more authentic and personable. At The Wedge in Rivonia, an artisanal department store called The Depot recently opened in the erstwhile Mr Price premises; pop in at Superella in Melville (see also p24) to order a garment from Ella Buter and you can watch seamstresses Merlinne Nsongo and Samuel Phiri work their magic; visit the Smelt Glassblowing Studio at The Factory on Grant (see also p45) and marvel at the creative process as Bongani Dlamini teaches his art to a customer; and at The Atelier at 44 Stanley (see also p20 and p39), Fiona Pole operates a wonderful antique litho press from a bygone era. There are countless other examples, but you get the picture. In celebrating the special craftsmanship ethos of these kinds of shops and the people who own and operate them, we introduce a new section called Collectables. It includes antiques and bespoke items – and even doffs the proverbial hat to the humble offerings of street traders who produce something out of the ordinary. We had great fun unearthing all these hidden gems on your behalf, in the process even discovering some venues (such as Norick Interiors, Katy’s Place and Amatuli in Kramerville) we never knew existed.
