Wor ds by M at t h e w Be l l I n May 20 04 , breakfast television presenter Natasha Kaplinsky sashayed onto the dance floor and Strictly Come Dancing took its first tentative steps into the world. Over the following decade the BBC One show – which pairs celebrities and professional ballroom dancers in a contest to out tango, waltz and cha-cha-cha each other – has come of age. It has become a much-loved Saturday night fixture, mixing drama, emotion and, when the less capable celebrities take to the floor, hilarity. Audiences have topped 14 million and the format has been sold to more than 40 countries. Now, in the year it celebrates its 10th birthday, Strictly Come Dancing receives a well-deserved British Academy Special Award in recognition of its outstanding creative and technical achievements. The perfectly honed light entertainment show that appears on screen hides the amount of sheer hard work that the off-screen talent puts into making live television. “There is a huge amount of pressure,” says Strictly Come Dancing’s director Nikki Parsons, nominated herself this year in the Director: 16 Multi‑camera category. “Behind the scenes, it’s sometimes chaotic but that chaos never makes it on air, which is a testament to the abilities of the team. Making the show is a huge team effort. Everyone pulls together while working in the most stressful situations – and produces brilliant results.” Although the show is very much a team effort, Parsons does single out a few names for special mention: “Lighting director Mark Kenyon and production designer Patrick Doherty are key to how the show looks – they’ve been on Strictly since the very beginning.” As a veteran of more than 150 shows, Parsons is well qualified to comment on Strictly Come Dancing’s success. “It’s family entertainment – there’s something for everybody in it, from kids to grandparents. Strictly’s a happy show, which is not out to humiliate people.” She also mentions the show’s “warmth and intimacy”, which surely emanates from the hosts, BAFTA Fellow Sir Bruce Forsyth (who recently announced his retirement from the show) and Tess Daly. It is the comedic moments that stand out from Parsons’ years working on the show: “John Sergeant pulling Kristina (Rihanoff ) across the floor, Ann Widdecombe flashing her knickers, Russell Grant being fired out of a cannon and, last year, hairy biker Dave Myers – everything he did was memorable.” She has also enjoyed watching the celebrities knuckle down and learn to do something alien to them. “In the early years we had quite a few sportsmen, such as Matt Dawson and Mark The Special Award Ramprakash, who couldn’t dance for toffee when they started. But by the end of it they were amazing. “I’ve absolutely loved working on Strictly,” says Parsons, who is again onboard for this year’s run. “At the end of every series, you think, ‘I can’t do that again – it half killed me,’ but that’s soon forgotten and then I’m looking forward to working with a great team of people again.” She adds: “Speaking on behalf of the team, we all love working on Strictly and are so proud of what we’ve achieved. We offer up to 25 young freelancers across camera, sound, art department, editing and production a six-month programme of masterclasses, workshops, mentoring, career guidance and access to all our information about forthcoming productions. It is a programme based on developing their ‘soft skills’ – networking, branding, marketing, business acumen and so on – that will enable them to fulfil their potential in a freelance environment. It’s a genre that has always been a British strength. Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway demonstrates the huge team effort involved with making these shows. Typically a production team of 50 people research and prepare for the show every week. Their ideas mean that the show goes way beyond the studio: we can be asked to cover anywhere from the outside of the tower to 22 floors of lift shaft. The crew can run to 100 people across all crafts – from cameras, scenic and lighting to engineering – and every one of them has a skilled and crucial role to play in producing more than an hour of superlative, live Saturday night entertainment.
