The power of music is a transformational one.
Among our record number of offerings are programs that celebrate one of the most impassioned musicians of the twentieth century, Glenn Gould, through two engrossing biographical films in our expanded OBF Cinema series, and an exploration of the Goldberg Variations, a signature work for Gould. At the heart of the season is a literal expression of The Passion: Bach’s St. Matthew, which in its profound majesty influenced Mendelssohn and Tippett. Major concerts of their music provide two of the main pillars of this year’s festival season. While the transformative experience of Helmuth conducting the St. Matthew may be impossible to contain, his insightful Discovery lectures will be recorded for generations to explore through our Digital Bach website. Long after the applause fades, we may return to enjoy the work’s—and the maestro’s—distinctive power.

Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and the captivating tone of his Stradivarius violin. In Mendelssohn’s concerto, the benchmark for all great violinists, Bell performs his own cadenza (an extended solo) at the high point of the work. The fireworks continue with the Italian Symphony, Mendelssohn’s picturesque impressions of a journey made as a young man, and the exciting choral work The First Walpurgisnacht, where Druids stage a raucous masquerade to fend off foreign occupiers during a stormy night on Harz Mountain. Preludes, etudes, and astounding piano pyrotechnics are the recurrent themes of this evening’s concert by Ya-Fei Chuang, who will leave you breathless with her mastery of these gems for the keyboard. She begins with Debussy and six of his dreamlike and evocative Preludes, includes Earl Wild’s dazzling etudes based on beloved Gershwin standards, and doesn’t stop until she scales the dizzying heights of Liszt’s tour-de-force Reminiscences de Don Juan. A first-prize winner at age 11 in the national competition of her native Taiwan, Ya-Fei Chuang has performed at prestigious festivals worldwide in addition to regular appearances here at the OBF. Composer Michael tippett first asked t.s. Eliot to write the libretto for a child of our time. However, the poet urged tippett to tell his own story. in parallel to the chorales of Bach’s st. Matthew Passion, tippett integrated American spirituals such as steal Away, Go down Moses, and deep river as choral commentaries on the action. this brilliant choice enables the work to reach the deepest levels of our common humanity. its haunting narrative and rich climaxes embrace both the shadow and light of our collective whole.

British composer Michael Tippett created the modern choral masterwork A Child of Our Time as a response to World War II. Like Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, upon which it was modeled, it is a work of urgency and somber beauty. Conductor Matthew Halls, who will succeed Helmuth Rilling as artistic director following the 2013 Festival, opens this concert with Bach’s Lutheran Mass in G Major. By the time he reached his mid-20s, GLENN GOULD had changed the way the world listened to the keyboard works of J.S. Bach. We mark his birth and death anniversaries with two prize-winning feature films and these explorations of the Goldberg Variations, the work closely associated with the enigmatic genius:
• A recording by Matthew Halls on harpsichord will be the audio track for a new component of the DigitalBach.com website, premiering in June. • The Hinkle Seminar July 14, with Hewitt, Halls, and musicologist Tim Smith, author of the interactive components of DigitalBach.com.

The famously eccentric pianist (played by Colm Feore) is the subject of this idiosyncratic film portrait with a form inspired by J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The 1993 film won four of Canada’s Genie Awards and Best Canadian Feature Film at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Rare footage, photographs, and excerpts from Gould’s private home recordings and diaries plus personal interviews with his most intimate friends and lovers reconstruct the enigmatic artist’s thoughts on music, art, society, love, and life. “Scrupulous, candid, and eye-opening” —A.O.
