GEHOORSENTRUM

28 NOVEMBER 2017

Gone are the days of allowing pets to “just have 1 litter. For the kids.” The harsh reality is that overpopulation, across the globe, is a very real issue. In fact, we’re already in crisis mode. Rescue centers are bursting at the seams and the number of unwanted pets grows daily. So, responsible pet owners know that the ethical and correct thing to do is to spay and neuter their pets. Spaying refers to the veterinary process of removing the ovaries and uterus of a

female pet while neutering refers to the veterinary procedure of removing the testicles of a male pet. Should you be looking for a little more convincing, the Pet Food Industry Association of Southern Africa (PFI) has compiled the reasons below to spay and neuter your pets: The obvious f irst reason is to curb the already huge population of dogs and cats, thereby giving shelter animals a greater chance of finding a home. Although the market for thoroughbred pets does exist, the task of raising flexible, welladjusted and socialized pets is an onerous one and not one that should be taken lightly or by just anyone. A great deal of research, knowledge, time and effort is required. Don’t burden yourself with such requirements – rather leave this to the experts. Research suggests that spayed and neutered animals enjoy longer lives, in part because their desire to roam is curbed, keeping them safer, and their risk of contracting certain cancers is reduced.

Certain bad behaviours can be curbed, especially those related to unacceptable urination and aggression. And because behaviours become habit, the earlier one spays or neuters (within acceptable age ranges) the lower the risk of having to deal with these sort of behaviours. One stands to save on unforeseen costs associated with reproductive health issues or injury sustained by roaming and fighting pets. A spayed female will not go into heat, saving you the unwelcome visits of male suitors. Despite popular belief, spaying or neutering your pet will not make them fat. What’s important is feeding an appropriate diet for age and life style, from a PFI member brand so that you can be sure your pet’s minimum dietary requirements are being met, and to incorporate an adequate amount of exercise into their daily routine. This holds true for all pets, whether spayed or neutered or not.

Health risks of cockroaches The summer rains and warm temperatures create ideal conditions for cockroaches to thrive as the humid conditions allow them to develop into adulthood faster and there is more food to be found. Around this time of year, colonies of cockroaches flourish and reproduce at an alarming rate. Health risks Few people know that cockroaches are the number one cause for the spread of Tuberculosis via the pathogens that are carried on their bodies. Humans breathe in the pathogens or come into direct contact with the cockroaches’ excretion and regurgitation. Other pathogens which these insects carry include zoonotic bacteria such as Salmonella spp. and Typhus, and they also spread infectious viruses like Influenza and Hepatitis. How do you know if you have cockroaches in your home? If you start noticing their droppings, which typically look like grains of pepper, it is a

sign that you do have a cockroach problem. These droppings will usually be found in floor corners, cabinets and drawers. Food, warmth and moisture are the preferred breeding ground for cockroaches. It is also not uncommon for cockroaches to enter the casings of washing machines and dish washers, says Neel Rust Agrochem. Cockroaches are nocturnal and come out looking for food at night. How do you get rid of them? It is common knowledge that cockroaches can enter a house through various openings, cracks, drain pipes and vents. Use bait, treating areas on the outside of your house which could be a refuge area for cockroaches, as well as treating those cracks, drain pipes and vents. Sanitation is the primary way to get rid of these pesky pests. If you manage a clean kitchen and bathroom, you will make it very difficult for them to find food. Keep your home clean and dry, as without water, few insects can survive.

Political support to clear the rot A intervention team was announced by Gauteng Premier David Makhura to fix the financial and managerial problems of the Gauteng Health Department. According to political leaders this intervention should have happened far sooner as the Department has been deeply dysfunctional for many years. A number of “turn-around plans” have been announced for this Department in the past and they have all failed. Top-level political support will be needed for the new team to succeed as many incompetent deployed cadres should be fired and politically-connected corruption networks destroyed. Massive surgery will be needed to remove all the rot.

The Department has yet to recover from the disastrous period under former Health MEC Brian Hlongwa where massive corruption occurred that has still not come to court after more than seven years of investigation. The DA is pleased at the inclusion of Professor Craig Househam on the intervention team as he can use lessons from the successful Western Cape Health Department which he headed previously. They are disappointed because there are no private health professionals on this team which would have been valuable in importing private sector efficiencies. Both financial and managerial problems need to be tackled in the Department.

Dangers of energy drinks! How many of us know that most of the energy drinks had a doctor-prescribed warning label. The label read something like this: Product contains caffeine and may also include medicinal herbs. People with anxiety or psychiatric disorders, heart conditions and children should avoid their use. Avoid combining them with Alcohol. Everyone in general and elderly people in particular should be cautious using them, especially if the person has a known history of fainting spells, lightheadedness, high blood pressure, diabetes or cardiac rhythm disorders. Did you get the “everyone in general” statement? Energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster and “shots” such as 5-Hour Energy are far more than just a quick pick-me-up — and certainly more complex than soda or a cup of coffee. As more and more patients are discovering, these concoctions may have long-term effects on their health. Some physicians even go so far as to advise no one should drink them—ever. Doctors are becoming more and more concerned as the effects of these energy drinks some of the products are unregulated and have no warning labels. Did you know that the target population igroup is young males. Caffeine is known as a potent drug according to doctors and they use caffeine to stimulate breathing in premature infants, and it can be very useful if used correctly. Unfortunately, most youth (and adults, for that matter) don’t know the dangers the common drug can pose. Maxing Out The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention’s studies show that beverages marketed as energy drinks have become a popular source of caffeine, with some brands containing the caffeine equivalent of one to three cups of coffee or cans of soda. While caffeine is the main active ingredient, energy drinks also include other ingredients that claim to boost physical energy or mental alertness, such as herbal substances, amino acids and sugars. About 6 percent of adolescent and young adult males in U.S. civilian and military populations consume energy drinks daily that can have negative side effects, such as caffeine intoxication, overdose, withdrawal and interactions with alcohol. According to medial facts the maximum caffeine dose recommended daily is about 400 milligrams a day for adults. When the total dose reaches 1,000 milligrams in one day, the toxic effects of the drug are real dangers, including tremors, seizure, kidney and liver problems. At 5,000 milligrams in 24 hours, caffeine is a lethal drug. Typically, these drinks have anywhere from 200–400 mg of caffeine per container. By comparison, 8 ounces of coffee has 163 mg and one Diet Coke has 45. But many people don’t stop with just one energy drink, and they usually have other forms of caffeine that contribute to their daily total intake — and they reach dangerous levels quickly. A main side effect of large amounts of caffeine and sugar can result in palpitations and a sensation of a racing heart. “It seems that a cutoff of six cups of coffee a day is a threshold over which people might be at risk of developing arrhythmias

14 Dangers of too many energy drinks Studies showed that energy drinks cause more forceful heart contractions, which could be harmful to some with certain heart conditions. Between 2009 and 2011 there were 4854 calls to poison control centers regarding energy drinks and 51% of these calls were involving children. Another study recommends that teens consume no more than one 250 ml energy drink per day and not before or during sports or exercise. A 2016 study showed that 18-40-year-olds who drank energy drinks had a significant increase in their QTc interval, which is a marker of abnormal heart rhythm risk. Headaches and Migraines: Too many energy drinks can lead to severe headaches from the caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Changing the amount of caffeine you ingest daily can cause more frequent headaches. Increased Anxiety: Those with 2 different genetic variations in their adenosine receptors are prone to feeling increased anxiety when consuming caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks. Larger doses of caffeine can even spur on full-blown panic attacks. The research. Insomnia: Energy drinks do a good job of keeping people awake, but when abused, they can cause some people to miss sleep altogether. This lack of sleep causes impaired functioning and can be dangerous to drive or perform other concentration heavy tasks. Type 2 Diabetes: Because many energy drinks are also very high in sugar, they can eventually wear out the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which leads to type 2 diabetes. Drug Interaction: Some of the ingredients in energy drinks can interact with prescription medications

especially medications taken for depression. Addiction: People can become addicted to caffeine and energy drinks. This can lead to a lack of functioning when unable to have the energy drink or a financial stress from having to buy several energy drinks daily. Risky behavior: Teens are more likely to take dangerous risks when high on caffeine. This could result in injury or legal trouble. Jitters and Nervousness: Too much caffeine from energy drinks causes some people to shake and be anxious. This can interfere with performing needed tasks or cause emotional issues. Vomiting: Too many energy drinks can lead to vomiting. This causes dehydration and acid erosion of teeth and esophagus if frequent. Allergic Reactions: Because of the many ingredients in energy drinks reactions could occur, from minor itching to airway constriction. High Blood Pressure: Caffeinated products like energy drinks can elevate a person’s blood pressure. Niacin Overdose: Niacin (Vitamin B3) is placed in most energy drinks at levels that cause no harm and can even be therapeutic. However, if a person is taking additional supplements containing Niacin, overdosing on the vitamin is possible when consuming energy drinks in addition to those supplements. Stress Hormone Release: A study conducted by The Mayo Clinic found that a 240 mg version of Rockstar Energy Drink caused an increase in stress hormone release. The average norepinephrine level of the participants increased by 74% while the placebo only caused a 31% increase

such as atrial f ibrillation or other abnormal rhythms,” says Dr. Farhat Khairallah, an electrophysiologist. That could be as few as two cans of energy drink. Wolf in Sheep’s Clothes Another problem with energy drinks is how they are used. Doctors warn that people should avoid using these drinks to prevent sleep when their body needs rest. Many young people use them as sports drinks and for general hydration throughout the day. Health professionals believes this is a problem because caffeine, as a stimulant, can increase blood pressure and has diuretic properties. They warn that you cannot consider drinking coffee or energy drinks as adequate hydration. One of the main problems with energy drinks from a medical standpoint is how they are marketed. They are almost described as a health food, when in reality it’s more than just the caffeine that is worrisome. And because they are classified as “food products,” the FDA does not regulate them as they do medications. The vitamins and herbal ingredients in energy drinks can have unintended consequences on health. For instance, taurine is an organic acid used in muscles and brain tissue — it’s one of the body’s building blocks. Too much, however, can be a bad thing. Vitamin B-6 is another common energy drink component. While too little B-6 causes neuropathy — a def iciency of peripheral (such as hand or foot) nerves

that results in weakness and numbness — the inverse is also true. Too much B-6 in your diet also can cause neuropathy, and it may not be an easy fix. How many people know that an ingredient like Guana has two times as much caffeine as coffee beans, is this on the label of the energy drink you drinks? These drinks may be linked to cognitive decline, seizures, sleep disturbances, mood disorders such as anxiety and anger, tremors and increased blood pressure — which could lead to a stroke at any age. Mixing It Up A simple Google search returns hundreds of recipes for energy drink cocktails, with chilling names such as “The All-Nighter,” “1.21 Gigawatts” and “1-2-3-Floor.” Physicians hope that energy drinks might one day be regulated as the pharmaceuticals that they really are, with interaction warnings, overdose symptoms and age limitations. Until that day comes, they urge you with great fervor to leave them on the shelf.

Planning family holidays that won’t break the budget Jetting away on a family holiday may seem increasingly unaffordable, but there are ways to ensure you get the best possible deal. Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at DirectAxis Financial Services, says that like any other financial decision, a bit of research and planning can save money and take a lot of stress out of booking your annual getaway. She says it’s important to set the budget first and then match the holiday to what you’re prepared to spend. Getting the family excited about going somewhere before you know the costs could result in disappointment or spending a lot more than you intended. DirectAxis spoke to kulula.com, South Africa’s largest digital travel network and one of the country’s top online retailers by revenue, to find out how best to enjoy a

great getaway without busting the budget. Iain Meaker, Comair’s executive commercial distribution, says a little insider knowledge goes a long way towards getting the best value for money. Airlines sell the cheaper, less flexible tickets first. They know these seats will sell quickly. To make sure that customers don’t change their minds at the last minute and leave the airline with unsold seats, they charge penalties to make changes to these cheap bookings. The cheaper prices are generally below cost of carriage, so the closer it is to the departure date with less available seats, the more you will pay. Planning ahead, even up to a year in advance, will ensure you get the best possible deal on your flights. Another tip is to try to book outside peak periods. If you’re a family with children in school, this isn’t always possible,

although you can still try to avoid busy days at the beginning or end of school terms, when fares are typically higher. Better still, if your children aren’t yet in school, try to avoid flying during holidays. “Airlines have incredibility sophisticated revenue-management systems to ensure they maximise their revenue on every seat, but the underlying concept is simply supply and demand. When there are more seats available and fewer people want to travel, the fares are lower and vice versa,” says Meaker. Booking packaged offerings that include accommodation and car hire can also help keep costs down. Companies such as kulula holidays use their buying power to negotiate favourable deals with hotel and car hire groups, which is why the package is usually better value, not to mention more convenient, than booking everything

separately. In some cases you can even pre-book holiday activities, either before you depart or at your destination. This can save you money and also makes it easier to stick to your budget. Doing things on a whim can get expensive. “Besides the convenience of being able to plan and book your holiday online, you can compare destinations, accommodation, activity and prices. Use sites such as TripAdvisor to get independent reviews. By comparing offerings and others’ experiences, rather than booking the first holiday that takes your fancy, you can ensure that you are getting the best holiday at the best price,” says Meaker. For more information about getting the best from your travel budget visit: https:// www.directaxis.co.za/imagine/travel-andleisure

Children need to play Kriewelkousie kleuters Giving their children a head start is something parents want to do. Unfortunately, the way this is done in our hyper-competitive, over structured world may in fact be working against exactly these intentions. More and more research is showing that the most critical activity for the development of little children’s brains and their social and cognitive skills, before they go to school, is good old-fashioned play. Far less is gained when little children have full schedules of structured activities, from basic maths classes to early reading, gymnastics, kiddy music and mini-soccer. “When it comes to brain development, time spent in the classroom and at other structured activities is less important than time on the playground,” says Barbara Eaton, Academic Development Advisor for the Pre-Primary Schools Division at ADvTECH, Africa’s largest private education provider. She says that research by Sergio Pellis, from the University of Lethbridge in Canada, showed that the experience of play changed the connections of the neurons in the prefrontal section of a child’s brain, and that without play experience, those neurons remained unchanged.

“Pellis found that it was those changes in the prefrontal cortex during childhood that helped wire up the brain’s executive control centre, which has a critical role in regulating emotions, making plans and solving problems. In other words, play prepares a young brain for life, love and even schoolwork,” Eaton says. But she warns parents whose children’s rooms look like toyshops that they need to get things back to basics, because the kind of play that is beneficial is primarily the kind of play that requires creativity, imagination and problem-solving. “In the pre-school phase children need basic toys, not those with roles defined by the media, as the latter limits imagination and the opportunities to plan and create. Provide the child with a good set of plain wooden bricks, a few non-battery-operated cars, a soft doll or two, a teddy, some plastic plates and cups and a big ball. “Old blankets or sheets for making houses and tents, and some boxes and crates will provide the basics for endless creative and imaginative play. Playdough, some crayons and big sheets of paper - not colouring books – as well as some paint will amply provide for creativity,” says Eaton.

Championing change The annual Ride for MRP Foundation supported by Absa, a punishing 606 km ride from Johannesburg to Durban (December 3 - 4), is growing from strength to strength through strong partnerships and a committed peloton who are passionate about raising funds and awareness for the MRP Foundation. Over the years the annual fundraising challenge has steadily gained momentum, with this year’s edition boasting the largest peloton to date. South African rugby legends, John Smit, Jeremy Thomson and Wayne Fyvie have pledged their support for the 2017 event and will be part of the f ifty-strong contingent from a diverse range of backgrounds: masters, juniors, women and development riders, aiming to raise its highest ever target of One Million Rand. The ride starts at 4.30am in Nigel on December 3, and will pass through Standerton, Volksrust, Newcastle and will arrive in Ladysmith after 14 hours of grueling cycling. On December 4, the ride will resume at 4am in Ladysmith, descending through

Estcourt, Mooi River, Nottingham Road, Midmar, Howick, Hilton, Pietermaritzburg and Hillcrest, where cyclists will be escorted by the Metro Police through Pinetown, before arriving at the finish line at the MRP Head Office in Durban. The courageous cyclists will have to dig deep to push past their physical and mental limits to complete the challenging two-day ride, and in doing so, support its purpose in raising much needed funds to help empower South Africa’s youth by unlocking their full potential, through the MRP Foundation’s high impact programmes. As a youth development organisation, MRP Foundation’s mission is to empower youth from low-income communities as they journey from school into a career, empowering them to become part of the solution to end poverty and inequality. Since 2005 the MRP Foundation’s skills development programme, Jump Start, which teaches life skills and offers experiential training to young job seekers, has trained 22,045 unemployed young South Africans.

Ride for MRP Foundation - Championing Change

Of these, an incredible 11,205 previously unemployed youth have found employment in the local retail and supply chain industries across various companies. MRP Foundation’s programmes in education and skills development, as well as the inspiring ride, demonstrate the power of partnership and how joining hands with business, beneficiaries and others can lead to more good being done together. Since the inaugural ride in 2010, the event has welcomed on board a passionate group of partners, including Absa, SPAR,
