Reduce fire risks Department of Environmental Affairs’ Working on Fire programme which helps in fighting veld and forest fires. Firefighters in the Heidelberg team is hard at work helping the landowners and farmers with fire breaks and block burns
in the area. Phineas Mphela project Manager for teams said that the teams have since started with doing burnings for the landowners from June. ‘‘We urge landowners in particular to get into contact with us so that we can assist with the development of clear integrated fire management services which includes amongst others, prescribed burning, fuel load reduction, community fire awareness, early detection and f ire suppression plans,’’ he said. Mphela further mentioned that West Rand area is hotspot because every year it records high number of fires during this time of the year. He said they did burnings in Sedaven, farms around Heidelberg amongst other places. ‘‘But we firmly believe that through our partnerships with Provincial Disaster Management Centres’, Fire Protection Associations, SANParks, various private and public landowners and local municipalities, we will be able to respond quickly in rendering a highly skilled veld f ire suppression service which is unparalleled anywhere in the country,’’ he said. Stephen Boyes the General Manager for Working on Fire in Gauteng Province explained that just over 342 fire fighters stationed at 17 bases throughout the Province are ready and hard at work doing burnings to prevent disastrous fires. ‘‘Last year Gauteng Province recorded 448
fires and 19722 hectors of land burnt. Our Working on Fire programme fire fighters are professionally trained to suppress veld and forest f ires and they have been deployed throughout the province to reduce the personal and economic harm caused by unwanted wildfires,’’ explained Boyes. He further said Working on Fire
programme in Gauteng Province has the following firefighting resources: 7 bakkie sakkies, 4 Samils, 3 truck buses, 3 Strike units and 2 Fire trucks. All of these fleet vehicles are well serviced. They are able to carry f ire f ighters, firefighting equipment and thousands of litres of water to the fire lines.

Convicted for murder 54 year old Mphikeleli Shadrack Chilwane was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder. On August 31, last year, Chilwane stabbed his 48 year old female victim twice on her upper body. The victim was able to make her way to Duduza Police Station, she received medical treatment and was taken to the Pholosong Hospital where she later died. A case for murder was then registered and Warrant Off icer Billy Mabilane was assigned the docket for investigation. Through investigation, the suspect Mphikeleli Chilwane was arrested on September 7. The matter was placed before the Nigel Magistrate Court and on July 7, 2016 the trial was concluded. Chilwane was found guilty on the charge of murder and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and is only eligible for
parole after serving 10 years imprisonment. The court also declared Chilwane unfit to possess a fire arm. The help of the community is always greatly appreciated. SMS information to prime media crime on 32211 or contact 011 730 4723/42.

Greenest municipality award Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is the second greenest municipality in South Africa. The announcement was made by the National Department of Environmental Affairs during the 5th Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) held at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality in Mpumalanga recently. The City of Ekurhuleni took position two in the competition after eThekwini Munici-
pality, walking away with a whooping R3 million and a certificate of recognition. The prize money will be used for projects that promote environmental related projects and green economy initiatives. The metro is known to be amongst leaders advocating for clean and green programmes such as the Mayoral Clean City programme and the night shift Central Business District (CBD) cleaning programmes. “Taking position two in the competition simply means we have set the tone during the first round and many have learnt from us. We will accelerate our efforts to claim our number one spot in the competition,” said the Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral committee (MMC) for Environmental Development, Cllr Ndosi Shongwe. Cllr Ndosi attributed the accolade to the dedicated efforts of various departments including Waste Management Services,

New life Romans 6:6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.8And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. (NLT) Our fallen nature is subject to limitations, sickness, poverty and everything else the curse entails. Since we inherited this nature from Adam and Eve, we find ourselves wrought with the same sin-issue they experienced; Not only committing sin as isolated incidents of failure but being sinful by nature. In order to understand the complete work of redemption Jesus performed on the cross, we also need to understand how sin operates in our lives. Sin can be metaphorically described as a tree – the root system being the condition of our hearts, the way we think and consider things. Growing forth from the root system, we have different branches or areas and ways in which sinfulness can manifest. These are covered with ever changing leaves or emotions and ultimately fruit or then the behaviours that we see manifested on the outside. Considering this metaphor it becomes clear that we cannot deal with sin successfully simply by getting rid of the behaviour. The fruit is not so much our problem, the root is… In order to see new fruit, the whole tree has to be uprooted. This is exactly what Jesus did when He died for us on the cross. Romans 6:6 teaches us that Jesus died to break the power of sin over our lives. When we believe in Him, we become one with Him – as He is, so are we. Jesus is dead to sin and since we are one with Him, we also are dead to sin and free to embrace the purpose of God in our lives. We maintain this position of freedom by deliberately
doing the following things: • Consider yourself dead to sin (Romans 11:14; Philippians 4:8): The word ‘consider’ speaks of mulling over, thinking about, believing, bearing in mind. It is important for us to consider the fact that we are dead to sin and alive to Christ. We are not available for sin or anything connected to the old way of life to operate in or through our lives. • Do not allow sin to control the way you live (Romans 6:12-13; James 1:13; 1 Corinthians 10:13-14): The Bible cautions us to not allow any part of our bodies to become instrumental in service to sin. Since Christ has freed us, we can choose to resist sin and stand firm in our decision to serve God only. With every temptation that comes our way, we have the promise that God already provided the way of escape. • Apply yourself to Godly purpose (Hebrews 12:1): Very often the things God put inside us for pur pose become perverted and destructive when we are not living in purpose. We have to make sure to apply the very passion, attributes and actions that advanced darkness in the old life to establish righteousness in the new life. In Christ we willingly make ourselves subject to the Holy Spirit so as to do exactly what He wants us to do. Join us in this precious holiday season as we determine to not be conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:1) so that we may embrace and live in the beautiful space of God’s perfect will and purpose for us, serving no other but the Living God who lovingly set us free and called us to live the higher life, the new life in Christ!

Fight E-tolls The fight against E-tolls in Gauteng continues. This project has made it more expensive for the poor to travel to work, has hurt small businesses, driven up food prices, and undermined job creation. According to a DA spokesperson it has been an opportunity killing move by an uncaring government. This was a project that was proudly introduced by an ANC government. It was rammed through without suitable public consultation by an ANC government. And it was an uncaring ANC government that ignored, with contempt, the opposition to it by people across the province. This has undoubtedly amounted to the blatant highway robbery of hard working South Africans at the very time our people needed less red tape and more opportunities, so that they can access a job and live a life of dignity. The DA’s pledge to the people of Gauteng is that they will ramp up the fight against E-tolls and that this will be done by: blocking any further attempts by SANRAL to introduce new toll roads; immediately explore legal options available to us, to declare an intergovernmental dispute, to stop this continued theft from our residents; stand up to harassment of residents – under a DA government, Metro Police will not be allowed to harass motorists regarding E-toll payments; and fight for residents during consultation on existing tolling tariffs, to prevent increases
that will kill opportunities in Gauteng. In the first quarter of 2016, the Metros of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni saw a collective 216,000 join the ranks of the unemployed. We face a job crisis, continue to be a direct roadblock to job creation. E-tolls were proudly brought to Gauteng by the ANC. Now voters can start the fight against E-tolls by removing the ANC on 3 August 2016. On 3 August 2016, residents can vote against e-tolls.

Public refuse to pay! Members of the public who have been issued summons for non payment of eTolls, with outstanding amounts ranging from R500 all the way up to R8 million. SANRAL have indicated they have issued over 6500 summonses, with thousands more on the way to unsuspecting businesses and individuals. Over 2,7 million people have refused to pay e-Tolls, and thousands of businesses and individuals have given us the mandate to defend them by becoming contributing members of OUTA.
Other organisations have also chosen to defend themselves out of principle. This is a massive united front in a society’s defensive challenge against SANRAL in a legal war against State coercion. OUTA’s defensive legal assistance can only be provided to motorists who become members prior to being summonsed. If you are one of the over 2,7 million (80% of motorists) who have refused to pay eTolls and you want OUTA to defend you, you have to join OUTA’s mass defensive action.

Tydens die byeenkoms het die dames klere wat hul ingesamel het aan die SAVF oorhandig wat bygedra het tot hul fondsinsameling. Hierdie klerasie word onder die minderbevoorregtes versprei. Oupa Piet Stoltz, inwoner van Nigel Tehuis vir bejaardes, spog met 90 lange lewensjare. Oom Piet is op 22 Julie 1926 hier in Nigel gebore, waar hy groot geword het. Hy was ‘n gesogte boer in die kontrei. Hy het ‘n geseënde lewe gehad en spog met 7 kinders, waarvan 6 nog leef, 17 kleinkinders en 18 agter kleinkinders en binne kort gaan daar nog tweetjies by die familie bygevoeg word. Twee van oom Piet se kinders woon in die buiteland.

Strange weather Global temperatures for the first six months of this year shattered yet more records, and mean that 2016 is on track to be the world’s hottest year on record. Arctic sea ice melted early and fast, another indicator of climate change. Carbon dioxide levels, which are driving global warming, have reached new highs. Two separate reports from the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (NASA GISS) both highlighted the dramatic and sweeping changes in the state of the climate. June 2016 marked the 14th consecutive month of record heat for land and oceans. It marked the 378th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th century average. The last month with temperatures below the 20th century average was December 1984. “Another month, another record. And another. And another. Decades-long trends of climate change are reaching new climaxes, fuelled by the strong 2015/ 2016 El Niño,” said World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. “The El Niño event, which turned up the Earth’s thermostat, has now disappeared. Climate change, caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases, will not. This means we face more heatwaves, more extreme rainfall and potential for higher impact tropical cyclones,” said Mr Taalas. The average temperature in the first six months of 2016 was 1.3°C (2.4°F warmer than the pre-industrial era in the late 19th century, according to NASA. Arctic Sea Ice The heat has been especially pronounced in the Arctic, resulting in a very early onset of the annual melting of the Greenland ice sheet and Arctic sea ice. Snow cover in the northern hemisphere was exceptionally low. The ice extent as of 20 July was very close to the lowest ever for this date. The extent of Arctic sea ice at the peak of the summer melt season now typically covers 40 percent less area than it did in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Precipitation Rainfall in June 2016 varied significantly around the world. It was notably drier than normal. More than 150 countries were record wet, according to the China Meteorological Administration. More than 300 rivers crossed the water level warning mark. During the next few days, the South African Weather Service confidently expects an extreme, late winter weather system to develop, affecting mostly the southern and eastern parts of the country. Areas likely to be particularly affected include the higher elevation and moun-tainous regions of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal as well as eastern and north-eastern Lesotho. Significant, deep accumulation of snow can be expected upto Tuesday July 26, 2016. In southern Africa, the late winter season is wellknown for delivering winter weather systems, often of an extreme nature. Such winter weather systems, often characterised by snow, bitter cold and strong winds, have the distinct potential to be hazardous to the public, with possibly fatal consequences for human life as well as livestock, when facing the elements for extended periods without adequate shelter. The winter weather developing over the next few days is likely to be no exception.
Cool dad foundation Cool Dads Foundation has always committed its self to being more than a mouth piece and initiating change in the communities where it operates from. During this momentous month in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Day our foundation’s effort will focus on realization and restoration of dignity and empowerment courtesy of contributing to C.H.A.N.CE Children’s Home and Nurturing Centre in Dunnottar. children where they are housed. As a basic need for adequate shelter and infrastructure we are prompted to creating that secure and safe environment for the children. Our actions will allow all kinds of people to come together in plight of empowering the children and leaving them with a spirit to inspire others and make a difference to others when they one day grow up. C.H.A.N.C.E Children’s Home & Nurturing Centre in Dunnottar accommodates 90 children between the ages of 0 – 18 years. The children are accommodated in “homes” with 8-10 beds
and each child has his/own locker. Each home has a child care worker on duty (working shifts) who takes care/ responsibility for each child. The children come from backgrounds of being previously abused, neglected and orphaned. This happened on July 22 and as Cool Dads Foundation with this initiative we aim to unravel and achieve the following objectives: Renovate the C.H.A.N.C.E rooms where all 54 children are sleeping in. ?To mobilise other community members to
give their time & resources for this course. To enhance the current conditions of the home, thus creating a conducive environment for children to play. To provide basic education tools for children for them to learn and develop themselves. We would like to extend the hand of support and contribution to anyone who also heeds the call in paying homage to doing their bid. Dunnottar Primary School had a great fun week last week by celebrating “cleaning house!” Businesses sponsored paint, tools and provide volunteers to help upgrade the school. Stienie Marais wants to thank the following companies for their support and sponsors.

Will be missed! Siphesihle Mdawe a grade 6 scholar of Dunnottar Primary passed away on July 13. He suffered from asthma and lung problems. He achieved an award for dedication from grade 1 grade 4. In grade 3 he participated on District level in a literacy competition. The school will miss him dearly.
Ruben en Deolize Fouche. Ruben het van 11 tot 16 Julie aan die SA LSEN skole rugby O/18 by Academy week te Kearsney College in Durban deelgeneem. Daar was 44 spanne tussen die Academy en Cravan wat teen mekaar gekompeteer het. Ruben se span het drie wedstryde gespeel waarvan hul twee gewen en een verloor het. Ruben se sussie, Deolize het ook presteer tydens die Bokkieweek, waar sy vir Oos Transvaal O/19 netbalspan gekies is. Deolize het Oos Transvaal verteenwoordig en is een van 30 meisies wat aan die proewe meegeding het vir die keuring vir die Suid Afrikaanse span. Sy het nie die SA span gehaal nie, maar wel provinsiaal.

In die ope duiwe afdeling is die duiwe om 8h15 losgelaat oor ‘n afstand van 475km teen ‘n spoed van 1582 meter per min en het vanaf 13h15 ingeklok.
