Huge drop expected The price of petrol is projected to fall by a significant amount in March, while the wholesale price of diesel is anticipated to remain stable following a big drop in February. Paul Joubert, senior researcher at Solidarity Research Institute said that the rand has, on average, been trading at slightly stronger levels of around R16 to the dollar in February – from an average
of about R16.35 in January. “International dollar-prices of wholesale petrol have been trading significantly lower over the past 10 business days than in January, but diesel has been slightly more expensive, after falling sharply in January,” Joubert said. “If the current over-recovery for petrol persists until 25 February, the retail price of petrol will fall by about 80 cents per
litre,” he said. The researcher stressed that if the rand weakens again, or international petroleum prices increase, the drop will be lower. “There isn’t much chance of the expected decrease swinging around totally to an eventual increase, though.” Joubert said that the wholesale price of diesel is currently on a knife-edge. If current conditions persist, wholesale diesel prices will fall by about a cent on 2 March, “but this can easily change”.
Solidarity said that at the end of the month, the finance minister is likely to announce the annual change in the amount of the fuel levy and Road Accident Fund levy to be implemented on 6 April. Currently, the fuel levy is R2.55 per litre for petrol and R2.40 on diesel. The Road Accident Fund levy is R1.54 per litre on both petrol and diesel. These levies are fixed nominal amounts per litre and only change annually on the first Wednesday of April.

Shooting on R103 Several shots were fired at the truck driver of the Hino cold storage truck on the AK48 crossing on the R103. The driver and his passenger were injured after a gang of armed robbers intersected the truck. Shooting occurred between 06:00 and 07:00 on February 19 and SAPS Heidelberg responded to the call. According to Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate, police spokesman, the first shot was fired through the windscreen, where after the suspects moved towards the passenger side where they fired another shot through the door. Neither driver nor passenger was directly
hit and sustained severe injuries to the face. The suspects claimed money from the truck driver and fled. Kilometres further, they executed the same modus operandi with another truck, which was approaching from the opposite direction. Nobody was seriously injured in the second shooting and the robbers managed to flee. The driver of the first truck was transported to a nearby hospital by an ambulance, where he was treated for facial injuries. Police are investigating the shootings.

Technology breakdown Not so many years ago we survived without TV, cell phones, email and the internet. Today we feel that we have advanced with nearly all homes having at least one TV and a few cell phones. Internet is enjoyed by the majority and the world has become a smaller place. But there are some very signif icant negatives that go with this development. Let us look at a few and allow me to highlight some of the dangers: Communication between people has become remote and we have lost the “feel” of face to face talking. More and more people are texting with various formats instead of having a conversation with the person. This means that people’s facial reactions are not seen, messages are often misinterpreted and generally things are said that are hurtful. There are more and more people who are asking for help in their relationship because of the use of cell phones. At the same time what I call “verbal affairs” between two people are common and this results in tremendous trouble within a relationship. I always suggest to people to use messaging to tell a person that you love them and to relay information like time, appointments, what to wear etc. do NOT try and share feelings and frustrations with someone and definitely do NOT try to solve a problem using cell phones (messaging or calling). TV has taught us all how not to have a conversation and also how to listen but not talk. All too often people are not sure what to say to each other because they are not used to talking. At the same time when someone answers a person in a

A movie night is great but a good conversation with the family is even better. The internet has opened the world to a source of information that is enormous and very helpful. But at the same time there are a lot of articles placed that are not fact and there are even some article written specif ically to try and con people into believing something that is not true. I guess we need to be careful of believing everything that we find on the internet and we need to take some time to do some research to test the authenticity of the articles. Technology is great, but please be careful as it can also ruin our intelligence and communication.

Increase rate Eskom debts Still trapped impact The interest rate increase by 50 basis points will cause many South Africans, already stretched by cost-of-living increases, to stretch their monthly budget even further. At first glance a 0.50% increase in the repo rate, the interest rate at which the central bank lends money to the country’s commer-cial banks, may not seem like a lot, but it indicates that the Reserve Bank is worried about inflation as prices of goods and services rise, fuelled in part by escalating energy costs and a depreciating currency. “Simply put, inflation means that the money in your wallet is worth less. By increasing interest rates the Reserve Bank is trying to reduce spending and limit inflation to between 3% and 6%. The problem is that this also makes it more expensive to borrow money, which can limit economic growth,” explains Marlies Kappers, head of marketing at Direct Axis. There are some steps that can limit the effects of rising interest rates and other costs. Ruthlessly cut out non-essential spending and use the savings to pay off short-term debts, starting with those that attract the highest interest rates. Keep track of monthly expenses to see where you may be able to save. Consider consolidating debts. This involves lumping all your debt together and getting a single loan to repay it all. Spreading repayments over a longer term also usually reduces the monthly instalments. Try to save a little each month. Keep this in an accessible account to cover unexpected expenses.
South African National Civic Organisation(SANCO) urged municipalities to settle Eskom debts to avoid interruption of bulk electricity supply. “Communities should not be victimised or suffer inconvenience caused either by alleged maladministration or failure of municipalities to settle outstanding debts due to Eskom ,” SANCO National Spokesperson, Jabu Mahlangu said. Mahlangu called on affected municipalities to honour settlement agreements entered with Eskom and for urgent intervention to avert punitive measures that will negatively affect households as well as productivity of businesses. “Implementing regulated interruptions and disconnections will leave consumers with no option but to demand direct electricity sales from Eskom to eliminate the risk associated with purchase of electricity through municipalities,” he said. He urged Eskom to maintain an effective debt recovery and an early warning system that will ensure that debt levels are kept to a minimum.
SANCO called for safety at the Lily Mine in the Nkomazi area in Mpumalanga to be re-evaluated following another collapse and temporary suspension of rescue efforts. “Three miners are still trapped underground in a container,we have not lost hope to a successful rescue, “SANCO National Spokesperson,Jabu Mahlangu said. He welcomed the commitment that additional mining experts and specialised equipment will be mobilised for renewed rescue efforts.

First Things First Acts 2:42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. (NLT) Whenever we start out with something new, it is meaningful to start by covering the fundamentals of whatever needs to be achieved. Even in our walk with the Lord, the importance of being consistent and steadfast in the basic underpinnings of what we believe and our relationship with the Lord cannot be emphasized enough. The early church of Acts walked in this foundational truth. We see in Acts 2:42 that they built and grew the church by devoting themselves to four foundational elements: The apostles’ teaching: The apostles’ doctrine or teaching refers to time spent in the Word of God. Without a conscious, disciplined effort to study and make the Word our own, our spiritual growth and walk with the Lord is seriously compromised. Fellowship: Since we are social beings, the people we spend time with on a regular basis have a decided influence on our way of thinking and ultimately behaving. The people with whom we interact in relationships where we permit them to exert a certain amount of influence should be people worthy of imitation. Communion: Communion confronts us with the condition of all the important relationships in our lives in a head-on way. Since it brings us to the cross and everything Jesus achieved through the finished work of the cross, it compels us to make certain that we harbour no offense or resentment against anybody in our hearts. It also prompts us to consider our relationship with God and to ask for and receive forgiveness for our sins. In essence communion on a regular basis sets us up for a healthy emotional life in that we are required to deal with issues as they arise. Prayer: Prayer, referring to the special time we spend in communication with God, ties the previous three elements together in that we pray the Word, we pray for ourselves and those in our world and we interact with God from a place of right-standing as obtained through the Blood which is represented in communion. In all things, the life of Jesus provides us with the perfect model of what we should do. In Mark 1:35 the Bible gives us an indication of a few very significant factors with regards to Jesus’ prayer life: The first time of the day belongs to God: The Bible specifies that Jesus went to pray before daybreak. The very first moments of His day were deliberately dedicated to
God. Jesus went to pray before anybody could place any demand on Him for the day. It was important to Him to dedicate the day and all that it would hold to the Father in devotion before anything was yet required of Him. Spending time in devotion should happen on a daily basis in the morning. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He gave them the ‘Our Father’ as their model prayer. As evident in the wording of this prayer, it is a daily prayer. Get up: Jesus got up to pray. Considering the absolute importance of accurately discerning the will of God and receiving direction for the day from Him, it is imperative to do everything in our ability to ensure that we are alert and fully functional when we pray in the morning. Find an isolated place: The deeply intimate and personal nature of a healthy relationship with God requires a place where we can privately and honestly expose our hearts and the very essence of our being and what we are going through to God without being scared that someone else will walk in. Prayer time determines the rest of the day: In Mark 1:37 the disciples come to call Jesus from His prayer time stating that everybody is already looking for Him. Any believer that follows in the footsteps of Christ will find that there is a constant demand for love, help, support, direction and so much more on us. When this happens we can easily respond to the demand by becoming so overwhelmed that we cannot function appropriately anymore. Jesus response is not born in reaction to what is happening around Him but rather in what the Father told Him to do. As a result of spending time in prayer He can with confident boldness give direction to His followers and proceed to accurately manifest the will of God. When we spend time in fasting and prayer, the main objective for these spiritual disciplines can never be to try and manipulate God into doing what we want Him to do. We fast and pray in humble acknowledgement and recognition of our desperate need for God’s direction and guidance. It is in the presence of God that we find not only the strength to change, but also the direction for how and what we should change. Join us this week as we honestly and sincerely seek the face of God – not to try and force His hand, but to make sure that we know His will and align ourselves with it accurately. May you experience this week how the Holy Spirit mandates and empowers you to be all that He called you to be!

Building wise – the designer Not just anybody may draw plans or do work of an architectural nature. There are strict laws, regulations and conditions concerning the planning of buildings and related disciplines. The regulations use the generic term of “designer” to include 4 categories of professionals, namely the Professional Architect, Professional Senior Architectural Technologist, Professional Architectural Technologist and the Professional Draughts person. These different categories are indications of the level of training and competency of the person described. There is a schedule by the Dept of Labour describing which type of building and of what size may be designed and drawn by whom: this schedule is currently under revision and the revised schedules will be published soon. The aim of this whole piece of legislation is to protect the public from incompetency and possible costs involved when the designer is not competent in his work for that specific type or size of building. The designer’s mistakes could cost the owner a fortune. It is in the owner’s interest therefore to check the following which any designer in any category MUST be able to produce (Without these the designer is working illegally): A valid certificate of registration with the South African Council for Architecture, SACAP for short. This certificate has an expiry date. Proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance. (Any registered designer without this insurance is prone to very heavy f ines sometimes up to R10.000 or more).A letter
of Appointment. This is NOT the form completed for Municipal approval purposes, but a separate contract between the owner and the designer, describing the exact services the client can expect and the fees/tariffs payable. The whole building process is divided into 7 stages and each stage is calculated as a percentage of the total fees. There is a guideline for fees published annually in the Government Gazette, but fees are normally negotiable. This document is of such importance that the designer is prone once again to very heavy fines if he commences any work for the client without this. (Many designers have been f ined R10.000 for this contravention!) Golgota – oomblik van Waarheid
Uit die pen van Phillip van Rhyn Vir berading en gebed 079 762 5545. Pilatus vra vir Jesus: “Wat is waarheid?” Want u sien: Golgota was ‘n tyd, plek en storie van geweldige teenstrydigheid. Daar staan lig en duisternis, geregtigheid en onreg, liefde en haat en Skepper en maaksel lynreg teenoor mekaar. Dit is ‘n vreeslike dag omdat die Skepper nou in die hande van sy skepsel geval het! Die bordjies is verhang. Die prentjie lyk pikdonker. Die Waarheid en die leuen kom ook daar van aangesig tot aangesig met mekaar. Die donker prent is die leuen. Dit spreek van verloor. Van aftog blaas. Van die die dood. Die Verlosser is verwerp deur Sy eie mense. Daarom wil Pilatus weet: “Wat is waarheid?” Weet u: Dit is wat die sielevyand ons ook wil laat sien en glo. Hy verdonker jou prentjie en dus ook jou vooruitsig. Hy wil ons laat glo dat Christus se sending misluk het. Hy is deur sy eie skepsel se verwerping onkant betrap. Soms wil hy mense laat glo dat hulle God nooit nodig gehad het nie; of dat hulle te sleg is. God soek eerder goeie mense.
Ons weet egter gewis dat Golgota se donker prentjie eintlik misleidend is. Agter Golgota skitter ‘n helder werklikheid en ‘n heerlike vooruitsig. God is nie onkant betrap nie. Die vyand was nog nooit vir hom ‘n bedreiging nie. Hulle is nie eers in dieselfde liga nie. Die oorwinning is al in die oertyd voorbestem. Dit was deel van God se oerbesluit en raadsplan voor tyd begin het, om ons deur die dood van Sy Seun, Sy kinders te maak (sien Ef. 1). Daar was geensins van ‘n verrassing op Golgota sprake nie. Hoe weet ons dit? Amos 3:7 stel dit onomwonde: “Die Here Here doen niks, tensy hy Sy raadsbesluite aan sy knegte, die profete geopenbaar het nie.” Alles wat later op Golgota sou afspeel, is eeue vooruit deur verskillende profete voorspel. Nie minder nie as 25 profesieë is binne 24 uur rondom die Golgotagebeure letterlik vervul! (Sien Joh. 20) Voorbeelde hiervan sluit in dat asyn en gal vir sy dors aangebied is; dat die lot oor sy gewaad gewerp sou word; dat geen been van Hom gebreek sou word nie; dat daar water en bloed uit Sy sy sou vloei. Trouens Psalm 22 bevat byna woordelik die meeste van die Here se smartvolle kruis-uitinge. God was duidelik in beheer by Golgota omdat Hy alles haarfyn beplan het. Dit is dus nie ‘n verloorstorie nie, maar ‘n heerlike wenstorie! Die leuen is ontmasker. Ons is vrygekoop en is nou medeerfgename met Christus. Ons het ‘n blye vooruitsig om met Hom herenig te word. “Wat is waarheid?” Of liewer: Wie is Waarheid? Waarheid is nie ‘n idee nie – dis veel meer. Dit is eintlik ‘n Persoon. Om waarheid te ken moet jy Hom ontmoet en dien. Dit beteken jy en ek moet Hom na-leef. Jesus sê in Joh. 14:6: “Ek is die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe.” Prys God!
