Economy shock Fuel and electricity price increases may drive country into recession, according to economist, Dawie Roodt. The R1.62 a litre increase in the price of 95 octane fuel together with the 14.25% increase in electricity tariffs for municipal users could drive South Africa into a fullblown recession. Roodt said this was the largest fuel increase in history and was going to hit consumers like a ton of bricks. “If Eskom loses any more generating capacity, economic growth could slow to less than half a percent or even become negative plunging the country into recession. “Bad governance and confusing policy is adding to the South Africa’s economic woes signif icantly because foreign investors don’t know the extent to which their investments will be protected.” “If government keeps pushing forward with restrictions on land ownership rights for foreigners and increasing BEE targets, what little foreign direct investment is still coming into the country will disappear completely. We may even see existing
investors packing their bags and leaving the country which could lead to massive job losses,” Roodt said. The Central Energy Fund said the fuel levy now amounted to R2.55/l and R2.40/l for petrol and diesel, respectively. The Road Accident Fund levy would be R1.54c/l from April 1, it said. Debt expert Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, one of the largest debt management companies in South Africa, said the present combination of economic factors was going to severely impact on consumers, many of whom were already deeply indebted. “We know that municipalities are going to add three or four percent to Eskom’s 14.25% increase and that Eskom is trying to push through further increases this year to compensate for the losses they incurred through preventable inefficiencies. “The overall debt that consumers have stacked up during the past several years effectively means that they owe 75% of their net earnings to creditors already,” Roets said. “Once they have serviced their mostly
overdue debt, very little money is left for essentials like food, clothing, transport and school fees.” Roets said the fuel price hike would mean that there would be significant increases in the prices of all commodities but especially food which would hit the poorest of the poor the hardest.” “Almost all goods are transported by road and the wholesale diesel price increase of between R1.22/l and R1.24/l will have a significant impact on the prices of virtually everything consumers use on a daily basis.” Roets said Debt Rescue had been experiencing unprecedented growth largely because of the flood of consumers who are on the verge of losing their possessions to debt collectors and resorted to debt review to help them repay their debt in a manageable way. According to the National Credit Regulator’s Consumer Credit Market Report (CCMR), the total outstanding gross debtor’s book is sitting at R1.47 trillion. This represents money owed by consumers in the form of mortgages, vehicle finance,
credit cards, store cards, personal loans, short term loans, pension and insurancebacked loans.

A welcomed visit to Indawo Yosizo In the last article I wrote and asked for folk to help us help those who have less than we have by bringing tinned food to Indawo (46 Smit Str, Heidelberg) or
dropping them off at Heidelberg Methodist Church. I felt that while we are in the middle of winter a person cannot survive without food but one can try to get warm in any way that you can. With this in mind I did not put out an appeal for blankets but we as a church were very aware that we had not managed to raise enough funds to purchase blankets (as we always do). And then we see how God works in our lives. On Friday evening at 18h00 I received a call from Cape Town saying that Ashish Gangapersad, Shoprite/Checkers had chosen Indawo Yosizo as their next charity gift target. I was so thankful and so pleased and took time to admire how God works in our lives. They said that the team would be there on Wednesday to do the handover of blankets, beanies, scarves, ponchos and fleecy tops. The day was perfect – this is the day that we give out between 70 and 130 food parcels to the people our care workers look after during the month. On Tuesday I received a phone call from a very excited Cherry (our manageress at Indawo) saying that a big truck had come to Indawo to make sure they knew where our premises were. They were also going to be there on the Wednesday to make and give out soup and bread to the folk. What a blessing! As they promised two trucks arrived early on Wednesday with the big “SHOPRITE” name on the side. They set up and were

THE BASIS OF SHORT TERM INSUR ANCE The policyholder is required to pay a monthly / an annual premium for the cover provided under the policy. Insurance companies use statistical models and algorithms that take into account all the risk factors pertaining to the occurrence of an insured event to determine the overall risk profile and premium payable. These are well known and all insurance companies work on essentially the same data. This should pose a warning against shopping for the cheapest premium. From a policyholder’s perspective one should clearly distinguish between “cheap” and “affordable”. It is a general rule that cheap premiums will often have the result that claim payments on certain risks may be restricted or excluded completely. A word of CAUTION! Any insurance contract is one of “good faith” which means that whilst the insurer accepts a risk based on their assessment of that risk, there rests an important responsibility on the policyholder not to contribute to the risk. Therefore an insurer may repudiate or deny liability for a claim if it is clear that the policyholder did not take reasonable steps to prevent or mitigate such risk. For instance, one cannot claim for damage to the roof of a house when it is clear that no maintenance was done to prevent any damage thereto. Similarly: Where an insurer requires some form of alarm or tracking device it will normally require that these systems be tested on a regular basis and proof that they were switched on and operational at the time of loss. CONTIUITY IN SHORT TERM INSURANCE Nobody insures their assets for one month/year only! The purpose is obviously to insure any assets for the duration that an asset will be in one‘s possession. Assets may be disposed of or new assets may be acquired on a regular basis. It is for this reason that the short term industry (all insurers!) requires that insurance policies be reviewed and renewed on an annual basis. This implies an important responsibility on policyholders to advise their brokers / intermediaries of any changes in their assets and or risk profile! As is the custom the folk broke out in song, blessing us with a number of hymns being sung in their own language. Ashish arrived and greeted the folk and they gave out second helpings of soup, blankets, beanies, scarves, ponchos and fleecy tops to all the people. The balance of the items will be taken by our care workers to the homes of the people who did not receive on Wednesday. At present we are looking after about 400 adults and 200 children and I can promise that they have all been blessed with these gifts. Thank you Isidingo (Ashish), Shoprite/ Checkers for the gifts. They came just at the right time. Please remember that we still need lots of tins of food – drop them off at Indawo between 08h30 – 16h30 or at HMC between 08h30 – 13h30.

Kosbaarheid van keuses Die menslike brein het die vermoë om dinge wat die lewe aan ons voorhou met mekaar te vergelyk en dan ons keuses te maak. Ons is geskape om tussen reg en sleg, waar en onwaar te onderskei. Dan is dit ook so dat elkeen aanvaar dat sy oordeel altyd korrek is. Steeds is dit die Skepper se begeerte om aan ons die voorreg te gee om self te kies. God is ‘n God van order en druk niks in iemand se keel af nie. Elke mens het ‘n keuse of hy die Here wil dien of nie. Soms maak die lewe met ons snaakse draaie juis oor ons verkeerde keuses. Ten spyte van ons verkeerde keuses is ons Maker alwetend. Hy ken elke mens se sit en staan. Juis hieroor sal Hy sekere dinge toelaat om te voorkom dat ons heeltemal verlore gaan. Hoeveel merkies kan ons op ons lewenspad maak waar ons met goeie bedoelings oënskynlik reg geoordeel het, maar die gevolge moes dra van verkeerde keuse. Hoe dikwels dink ons nie: “as ek maar net meer versigtig nagedink het, of, ek sou nooit kon glo dat een oordeelsfout my drome aan skerwe sou laat spat nie!.” Sou ons lewenskeuses vir ons gemaak word, sou ons waarskynlik baie kosbare tyd wat verby is beter benut het. Die persentasie van mislukkings sou omgekeer word in sukesverhale. Dan sou daar ten minste minder ‘on the go’ gewees het, en meer tyd vir belangriker dinge en vir mekaar. Maar dis hier waar Sy onwrikbare vertroue in Sy kosbaarste skepping, die mens, gestalte kry. Hy vertrou ons. Hy glo in ons gesonde oordeel. Hy gee ons Sy Woord. Hy eer ons as ons die regte keuse gemaak

Die bewyse toon dat tienerswangerskap verband hou met ’n aantal ingewikkelde maatskaplike en emosionele kwessies. Navorsing toon dat talle tienerma’s uit gebroke gesinne kom. Dit is dus duidelik dat disfunksionele gesinne tot tienerswangerskap kan lei. Ander meisies mag swanger word as ’n direkte gevolg van verkragting. Raped A 42 year old male appeared before Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court on July 8, 2015 for allegedly raping his 15 year old daughter during April 2015. The suspect remains in custody while the case is remanded to July 15, 2015 for bail application. It is alleged that the father lured the child to his place of work where he repeatedly raped her. The woman with whom the girl is staying discovered that the girl is pregnant. Upon further questioning the child said that her father raped her at his place of work. The father was arrested at Tsakane Location on July 7 and detained in Heidelberg Police holding cell.

Is the world at risk of running out of safe, healthy food? On 31 Oct 2011, the world’s population shot past the 7-billion mark on its way to reaching 9 billion or more by the year 2050. In the next few decades, demand for animal protein will climb by 60 % as population increases and the global middle class expands by three billion people. We’re already overusing the earth’s resources, consuming about 1.5 times the natural resources we should use in a year. Delivering safe, suff icient, affordable protein to feed the growing population has never been at greater risk. Right now, based on our current production trends, nearly half the globe - 4.5 billion people - won’t meet their nutritional needs by 2040. This is according to a food security report released by the ENOUGH™ movement which is committed to building a foodsecure world by 2050. The ENOUGH™ movement is spearheaded by Elanco, a global innovation-driven company that develops and markets products to improve animal health and food animal production in more than 75 countries.
