4 000 Jeug trek saam Sowat 4 000 jeugdiges het die naweek van 10 tot 12 April saamgetrek om die #Imagine byeeenkoms by te woon buitekant Heidelberg. #Imagine staan vir “God’s IMAGE is IN us”. Die doel van die saamtrek was om hierdie boodskap aan die wêreld oor te dra. Die # simbool word by die naam gevoeg om gelowiges met Christus en mekaar te verbind. #Imagine se slagspreuk is Droom, Glo en Doen. Die jongmense ontdek God se droom oor hulle en besef God se liefde vir hulle. Daar was groot opgewondenheid

onder die jongmense, wat gesing en dans het, sonder ophou. Tente is opgerig vir slaapplek en die lofprysings naweek was ‘n groot sukses. Uniek aan die naweek was die oop storte waar die jonges met swemklere kon stort. Verskeie kosstalletjies het gesorg vir heerlike etes. Leiers het groepe gestig waarin lesings oor die losmaak van gevangenskap aangebied is. Verskeie getuienisse is gedeel en die jeug is passie vol om as ambassadeurs vir Christus uit te gaan. Hierdie jeugsaamtrek het dwarsoor die land plaasgevind.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) warns that foodborne and waterborne diseases kill an estimated 2 million people annually, including many children. Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to sustaining life and promoting good health. Food safety, nutrition and food security are inextricably linked. Unsafe food creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly and the sick. Basie gaan gemis word! Oom Basie Grobler ‘n inwoner van Nigel en voorsitter van die Nigel Jukskei klub vanaf 1984 tot 2014 se afsterwe is ‘n groot verlies vir die gemeenskap. Oom Basie is gebore op 12 Desember 1934. Hy en sy vrou Hannie was 59 jaar lank getroud. In oom Basie se jong dae het hy vir die Oos-Vrystaat se 0/19 rugbyspan as losskakel op die veld gedraf. Oom Basie het ‘n passie gehad vir jukskei en het 30 jaar lank as voorsitter van Nigel se klub opgetree. Sy groot liefde was om laerskool kinders af te rig. As speler het hy aan verskeie Nasionale Kampioenskappe deelgeneem. Vir ‘n aantal jaar het hy as Nasionale Keurder opgetree. Hy het ook op die direksie van die Oos Gauteng Jukskei Unie gedien. Oom Basie is op 6 April oorlede nadat hy ‘n operasie ondergaan het en skielik ‘n terugslag beleef het. Sy begrafnis het op Maandag 13 April vanuit die Hervormde Gemeente Nigel plaasgevind.

After Easter From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess I trust that many people had a meaningful Easter experience. The fact is that many folk only go to church for the Easter and Christmas services. While I am not here to judge I would like to ask one question: What did you feel when you went to church? Many people share that they had a positive experience and that while they are “not sure” what it was they actually felt good and had an experience of peace and love that was “a bit” foreign to them. There are others who go to church quite regularly and they too had a positive experience. They also found the experience to be “touching” and possibly “life changing”. There are yet others who are regular church goers and hardly ever miss a service. They also could have experienced God moving in their life in an awesome way. So here is my next question. Why is it that we stop here and not carry on forward allowing God to work in our lives and make a meaningful change in us as people? Face

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church facts, the change is always for the better and makes us better people. Those who hardly attend services quickly go back to “not going” to church and yet they found the service to be good and meaningful. Why not take up a challenge and try going for a three month period (to whichever church you f ind to be comfortable) and then seeing if you want to make this a lifestyle change or not. Those who go quite regularly why not use this period and experience as a spring board to draw even closer to God and allow Him to continue to mould you into the person He designed you to be. For those who attend regularly why not allow God to prompt you and move you into using your Spiritual Gifts to glorify Him. Take up the challenge and draw closer to God – even after Easter. This is in your hands and YOU have to make the choice. I pray that you make the correct choice.

Death traps on our roads This Easter weekend was exeptionally challenging. It coincided with the end of the month, school holidays and various pilgrimages. The change in the travel patterns was signif icant as most of the road users travelled after dusk. This contributed to fatigue, speeding, unroadworthy vehicles and drunken driving. These carnages and unwarranted misery brought about by irresponsible and lackadaisical behaviour can and should be avoided. We can no longer afford to bring this untold strain to our economy, health and social services. Indeed we cannot be at peace with ourselves when we fail to take responsibility and unanimously declare Enough is Enough. The official vehicle population has grown this year and this has translated into an added burden on the road infrastructure network and law enforcement capacity. In December 2013 there were 11 006 184 vehicles throughout the country. By December 2014, this number had grown by 363 741 to reach 11 369 925 registered vehicles. More than half (52%) of these vehicles are in Gauteng (38.76%) and KwaZulu Natal (13.47%). The number of driver’s licenses issued had also increased from 10 645 046 to 11 148 372 meaning that 503 326 new drivers had recently been licensed to use our road networks. The reports demonstrate abundantly clear that during the period under review, we experienced an increase in traffic volumes

along major routes leading out of Gauteng with the N1 north to Limpopo and south to the Free State, the N3 to KwaZulu Natal and N4 towards Mpumalanga among others. We have committed ourselves to a 365 days road safety programme to save lives on our roads. We implement this plan to realise the goals of the United Nations Decade of Action global road safety campaign to reduce road carnages by half in 2020. Our untold misery during this Easter holiday found expression and resonance at the time when these crashes occurred. Very interestingly 37 percent of the crashes occurred between 18H00 in the evening and 24H00 at night while 25 percent occurred between 12H00 midday to 18H00 in the evening. A total of 62 percent occurred between 12H00 to 24H00 as opposed to the usual pattern of crashes happening between 22H00 and 06H00 when most of our law enforcers are not visible on the roads underpinned by the challenge of implementing law enforcement on a 24/7 basis. The total crashes for the period under review is 208 resulting in 287 fatalities as opposed to the previous year during the same period when we had 148 crashes resulting in 193 fatalities. Unapologetically we will decisively root out corruption at all Driver Learner Testing Centres as well as in our law enforcement fraternity.

Dwelmhandelaars gaan veral geteiken word. Die DA doen ‘n beroep op inwoners om plekke waar verkope van dwelms plaasvind onmiddelik te rapporteer. Inwoners is dikwels bewus vanwaar dwelm handelaars opereer, maar is om een of ander rede bang om na vore te kom met konkrete bewyse. Die SAPS het al by verskeie geleenthede aan die inwoners genoem dat informante

anoniem sal bly en niks het om te vrees nie. Dit is ‘n alombekende feit dat dwelm handelaars tans hul fokus na skoolkinders verskuif het. Ouers moet bedag wees hierop en onmiddelik optree.

Van waar die naam? Grootvlei Tydens die soektog na goud in 1887, het ‘n geoloog van die Vaalrand, ongeveer agt kilometres noord-oos van die huidige Grootvlei geloop en vermoed dat daar ryk goudneerslae kon wees. ‘n Maatskappy is gestig en in die 1890’s is daar met boorwerk begin. Ongeveer 19 boorgate is vanaf die Vaalrand tot teen die Vaalrivier in die daaropvolgende 10 jaar geboor. Een boorgat was geboor waar die huidige dam by Grootvlei is en daar is die ryk steenkoollaag gevind. Toe die maatskappy kontantvloei probleme ondervind om verder te boor, is daar besluit om ‘n steenkoolmyn te open om uit die verkoop van steenkool weer geld te genereer om verdere prospekteerdery. Die steenkoolmyn was teen die middel van 1890’s in produksie. Die mynkantore was waar die huidige woongebied is. Gedurende die Vryheidsoorlog van 1899 – 1902 was die myn gesluit en die Engelse

magte het die mynkantore gebruik vir verblyf. Die slag van Grootvlei op 26 Desenber 1900 het dan juis by die mynkantore plaasgevind toe Heidelberg Kommando die Engelse daar aangeval het. Die eerste grondbriewe was die skriftelike bewys wat deur die destydse regering uitgereik is vir die plase wat aan die inwoners toegeken was. Die naam Grootvlei was gegee omdat die vlei baie waterryk was en begroei met riete. Volgens Piet Roets, moes dit omtrent gelyk het soos Kliprivier duskant Alberton. Dit was so ruig dat met die slag van Grootvlei ‘n deel van Heidelberg Kommando die nag daar stelling ingeneem het, voordat die Engelse aangeval was. Die dorp het sy naam te danke aan die plaas Grootvlei waarop dit geleë is. Balfour Frederich Stuart McHattie is op die 14de Maart 1839 in Skotland gebore. As kind emigreer hy na Suid Afrika en tree hy in 1859 in die huwelik met ‘n juffrou Wade wat die suster van Dick King se vrou was. Hy verwerf in 1866 Transvaalse burgerreg. Hy koop dele van die plase Vlakfontein 101 en Vlakfontein 180. In 1896 het president Paul Kruger by hom oornag en daar het Mchattie aan die president sy verlange uitgespreek om ‘n dorp op die twee plase aan te lê. Hy het ook aan president Kruger te kenne gegee dat hy die dorp na ‘n plekkie in Skotland wou vernoem, maar die president se antwoord was, “Jy is waardig om genoem te word en

waarom dan ‘n vreemde naam?” Op 31 Januarie 1898 het die Uitvoerende Raad die stigting finaal bekragtig. Die naam was McHattiesburg. As gevolg van ‘n kort besoek deur die Britse Eerste Minister, Lord Balfour, aan McHattiesburg, het die toemalige stadsvaders dit goed gedink om ter ere van die hoë besoek die dorp na lord Balfour te vernoem. Op 15 Februarie 1905 verskyn onder artikel 248 van die Uitvoerende Raadsbesluite: “Resolved that the petition be granted and that the McHattiesburg be known in future as Balfour.” “En so is McHattiesburg ‘n klinklare bewys van die goedertrou tussen Boer en Brit uit die veelbewoë wordingsjare, aan vergetelheid oorgelewer,” volgens JJ Smit geskiedenis onderwyser van Hoërskool Balfour gedurende 1958. Greylingstad Reeds vroeg in 1877 is daar belowende goudneerslae op die plaas Roodepoort 165, wat aan PG Greyling behoort ontdek. Pieter Gerhardus Greyling wat in 1830 gebore is en op 5 Junie 1922 oorlede is, was ‘n kleinseun van die bekende weduwee Greyling met wie Piet Retief in 1834 getroud is. Piet Greyling was ‘n bekende boer in hierdie omgewing. Soveel so dat hy veldkornet was en in 1885 as Volksraadslid van die distrik Heidelberg verkies was. Vanaf 16 Maart 1887 was Roodepoort in hierdie omgewing ‘n openbare delwery en met die gewoel en gewerfskaf van die delwers is 1 000 morge van Pieter Greyling aangekoop vir dorpstigting. Die dorp wat ongeveer vyf kilometer was, is vernoem na Pieter Greyling. Die stad was ‘n toekomsverwagting dat dieselfde uitbreidings wat op daardie stadium by Johannesburg plaasgevind het, ook hier so plaasvind. In 1894 is die spoorlyn van Natal na Johannesburg voltooi en het dit ongelukkig vyf kilometer noord van die ou Greylingstad verby gegaan. Daar was egter ‘n spoorwegstasie op die plaas Doornhoek 195, wat aan Willem Bezuidenhout behoort het, opgerig.

Toe daar sprake was dat ‘n nuwe dorp langs die stasie kon ontstaan, het Pieter Greyling wie se grond ook na-aan die stasie grens, grond beskikbaar gestel vir die nuwe dorp. Willem Bezuidenhout op wie se plaas die stasie geleë was, het ook grond beskikbaar gestel. Stelselmatig het die ou dorp na die nuwe verhuis. Wat min mense egter weet is dat daar ‘n ernstige geskil ontstaan het tussen Greyling en Bezuidenhout oor die naam vir die spoorwegstasie. Pieter Greyling het aangedring op Greylingstad stasie en Willem Bezuidenhout op Willemsdal-stasie. Die geskil het so hewig geword en aangesien beide persone gesiene inwoners van die omgewing was, het president Kruger persoonlik met die trein tot op Greylingstad gereis om die geskil te besleg. By die stasie onder ‘n boom is ‘n tafel en stoele neergesit waarby die President plaasgeneem het. Hy het die twee partye se saak aangehoor, ook kennis geneem dat die ou Greylingstad na die nuwe terrein kon verskuif. Sy beslissing was aan die noordekant van die spruit sal dit Willemsdal wees en aan die suidekant Greylingstad. Daar het egter ‘n hele aantal jare verloop voordat daar tot die stigting van die nuwe dorp Greylingstad oorgegaan is. Tot in die 1950’s was daar twee poskantore, minder as een kilometer uitmekaar gewees, die van Willemsdal en die van Greylingstad. So is die naam Greylingstad vernoem na die stiefkleinseun van Piet Retief, naamlik PG Greyling en deur die President Paul Kruger bevestig. Fortuna Daar is twee weergawes hoe hierdie rantjie aan sy naam gekom het. Die een is dat die Engelse bevelvoerder tydens die tweede Vryheidsoorlog dit na sy verloofde, Una, vernoem het, naamlik Fort Una. Everyone 16 years and older can donate blood. You need to weigh 50kg or more. It is very important to be healthy. Maintain a safe sexual lifestyle. Eat a meal or a snack before you donate blood. Commit to become a regular donor. Triomftog! Inwoners stap die 3km stap vir Koning Jesus. Op Saterdag, 11 April om 9h00 het inwoners ballonne vrygelaat asook 3 wit duiwe met die stap vir Jesus vanaf John Vorster stadium. Deelnemers het wit, rooi en swart t-hemde gedra om die kruisigings van Christus aan die kruis uit te beeld. Die swart simboliseer sonde waarvoor Christus aan

die kruis gesterf het. Die rooi verteenwoordig Sy bloed waarmee Hy betaal het en die wit versinnebeeld ons reinheid. Oral in die dorp het mense hulle bome, gedurende April met hierdie kleure lint versier om eer te gee aan Jesus se kruisiging. By die eindpunt, was verversings te koop aangebied.

Hierdie is nie wapens om mense te dood, te vernietig of aan te val nie, maar om weerstand te bied. In 1 Petrus 5:8&9 staan daar geskyf: “Wees nugter en waaksaam, want julle teëstander, die duiwel, loop rond soos ‘n brullende leeu, en soek wie hy kan verslind. Hom moet julle teëstaan, standvastig in die geloof.” In Efesiërs 6:10 lees ons: “Eindelik, my broeders, word kragtig in die Here en in die krag van Sy sterkte. Trek die volle wapenrusting van God aan, sodat julle staande kan bly teen die liste van die duiwel. Want ons worstelstryd is nie teen vlees en bloed nie, maar teen die owerhede, teen die magte, teen die wêreldheersers van die duisternis van hierdie eeu, teen die bose geeste in die lug. Daarom, neem die volle wapenrusting van God op, sodat julle weerstand kan bied in die dag van onheil en, nadat julle alles volbring het, staande kan bly. Staan dan vas, julle lendene met die waarheid omgord, met die borswapen van die geregtigheid aan, en as skoene aan julle voete die bereidheid vir die evangelie van vrede. Behalwe dit alles neem die skild van die geloof op waarmee julle al die vurige pyle van die bose sal kan uitblus.

What is eventing? Eventing is the ultimate test for a horse and rider, comprising three disciplines: Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping, the scores from each combine to produce an overall total. Kirsten Crafford age 16 riding Balmanno, was crowned as the National Eventing Novice Junior Champion for 2015. This 2 day eventing championship was held at the Inanda Country Base in Kyalami. All horses and riders need to build up their levels of skill as the sport has different levels of competition ranging from Intro classes, Novice, and Advanced. As horses progress through each level gaining points and experience the level of the competition increases. It is one of very few sports where professionals and amateurs compete together. Even the most experienced riders have to start at the lower levels with the young horses. Eventing is an Olympic discipline and is one of the few sports where men and women are considered entirely equal. One and two day events start with show jumping followed by cross country. A good cross country horse must be bold and straight as well as fast. The Rider Kirsten Crafford is 16 years old. She first started riding at the age of 13 at the Emerald Riding School in Nigel. At the age of 14 she started riding at the world renowned Winstead Stables under the direct instruction of the 15 times South African National Champion Graham Winn. Grahamm is considered the greatest eventing rider and instructor that South

Africa has ever seen. Graham has represented South Africa at the World Equestrian Games and he has trained many top riders such as Paul Hart. Kirsten Crafford attended Hoër Volkskool in Heidelberg. In Grade 8 she started home schooling with Impak so that she could complete nationally in eventing. Kirsten lives with her parents on a plot just outside Nigel at Holgatfontein. The ICB 90’s Novice Championship. On the 28th and 29th March 2015 the annual Novice championship for 2015 was held. There are 2 types of competitions each year in eventing, one being the SA National Championship and the other the SA National Novice Championship. 8 South African junior riders qualified to compete for the Novice title, and after the first morning’s dressage test Kirsten was in the sixth position. The Cross country phase started early Sunday morning. Kirsten achieved third place with no jump faults or time penalties. The f inal phase of Show Jumping commenced Sunday afternoon. The jumps and obstacles were built bigger and more technical for the riders because it was a championship class. Kirsten cleared all the show jumps without incurring a time penalty and after the class was finished found herself winning the event. This is an excellent achievement for a young rider who has not been riding very long and has been riding at the lower classes.

Another study, from the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University surveyed married couples who joined health clubs together and found that couples who worked out separately had a 43 % dropout rate over the course of a year. Those who went to the gym together regardless of whether they focused on the same type of exercise had only a 6.3 % dropout rate. Keep in mind that if you are currently working out with a spouse, a buddy or a bunch of fitness fanatics, there is no need to limit yourself to just one f itness partnership. He is 18 years old and has been doing eventing for the last 12 years of his life. He is currently competing in eventing 80 cm but for the novice championship he competed in the eventing 90 cm course.

Cycling event raising funds for education The 1965Ride is set to include three exQueenstown College heavyweights in this year’s ride. On April 8, 15 amateur cyclists left Heidelberg to undertake the fifth 1965Ride. This is a nine day, 850km epic road cycle tour to raise funds for education in the poverty stricken town of Queenstown, Eastern Cape. This ride has been undertaken each year since 2011 by a group of passionate cyclists; each tasked to raise a minimum of R30 000 to participate. Proceeds from the 1965Ride go directly to a bursary fund that supports learners at six schools in the Queenstown area including Queenstown

Girls’ High School, Hangklip Hoërskool, Queen’s College Senior and Junior Schools, Balmoral Girls’ Junior School and Hangklip Laerskool. Ute Force is a project that values childrens welfare, education and communities and by supporting this project we improve education and circumstances of less fortunate communities. To date they have secured over R2, 500 000, which has been raised through the fund-raising efforts of the cyclists. The 1965Ride began in 2011 with five cyclists and grew to 22 cyclists in 2014.
