What’s in a nickname?
A lot of you do not know that my family calls me by my nickname, Candy. As a child I detested them calling me that (and my friends finding out, and taunting me about it)—thinking it was so bubble gum and juvenile—but now I wish I went with it. I like the name Kariz because it’s unique, but Candy just sounds so youthful and, um, bubble gum. Ha! Shows you what you know at the age of 10. But whatever you prefer to call me—Kariz, Tanya (my middle name), Candy, or Persephone (my favorite mythical name as a kid, not knowing that she was the mate of the underworld’s Hades)—it’s still good ol’ me. This is why we shortened Baby Couture’s logo to BC. Everyone in the industry calls us that anyway, so we just made it easier to spell and say. It’s still your old (hopefully, favorite) family fashion and lifestyle magazine, made easy. And I write “family fashion,” because it is quite more demanding to style a brood collectively, and a lot of parents get their chic quotient from moms and dads we feature in BC as well (and I know this because I get messages in ibabycouture.com about it). Our editorials still pack the same BC punch, so I genuinely hope you get delighted with this issue… …And why wouldn’t you, when you’ve got a glowing, pregnant Kelly Rutherford showing us the latest in maternity fashion, with her gorgeous son, Hermes. Kelly is one of the sweetest, coolest (in spite of going through a divorce with her husband), prettiest faces on television. And OMFG, I was recently telling my husband (who happens to be my BFF) that when I was younger and would watch “Melrose Place,” Kelly was one of the girls I wanted to look like. More of Kelly and Hermes in their cover story—plus, we even caught the duo HHWW (Holding Hands While Walking—GG might be learning something new from me here)… …As for Chris Cornell. Sigh. Some of you ladies might have swooned seeing his cover, especially after witnessing Chris with his beautiful kids. The vision of a rock star moving

forward with his life, and leaving most of those things behind that a rocknrolla does—now that’s the image of a happy man to me. Vicky Cornell is one of the luckiest wives to be able to claim that she married one of the best singing voices—and hotties—in the music world. Not only that, her enviably sexy figure (yes, two children popped out of that slim bod) is something for me to work hard for. Chris is so perceptibly smitten with her, and these two are clearly a match made in grunge heaven. I also had the pleasure of meeting actress Alaina Huffman, and her charming husband, John, and we bring you an exclusive peek on their familial life. They’re all down-to-earth, good-looking, plus they genuinely enjoy each other’s company. With their innate flair, it was all too easy dressing them in the season’s latest trends. Please don’t forget to take a look at the extremely adorable winners of our “Dress You Up” contest (p. 14), which we launched last issue. Since then, some magazines have also done their bit in having the editors themselves style their readers, so I guess we must be doing something good. A
At what point in your career did you decide to go into kids’ fashion? Ever since I earned my MBA, I knew I wanted to start my own business, but I had no clue it would be in children’s fashion. I started out making very highend car seat covers immediately after my first daughter was born in 2004. I immediately became pregnant again, and had a second daughter in early 2005. It was then that I started sewing their clothing based on patterns from when I was little. The response was amazing, and I used my connections from my car seat cover business to start designing clothing. Why are your lines called, “Right Bank Babies” and “Left Bank Babies?” The name “Right Bank Babies” is based on the “Right Bank” of the Seine River in Paris—this is considered the fashionable and chic side of town, while the “Left Bank” is the more Bohemian, eccentric side of town. I lived in Paris while receiving my MBA and met my husband there, and have always adored the Parisian sense of classic style and ability to create a beautiful item out of the most basic products. Basically, RBB is our reversible, classic patterns and fabrics; and Left Bank is our Knit Wear line. Reversible clothes—this is a fantastic niche you have carved for RBB. How did you come up with it? The first thing I ever made for my daughter, Harlow, was a reversible smock dress [which was] like one I wore when I was little. It hangs on the wall in my office now. I found that I couldn’t get my daughter from my house to our destination without her somehow staining her clothing. I loved that I could flip the dress, and she was all put together again. On every design we can, we make

them reversible—taking a little more time and care with the pattern adds so much value to the item—literally twice as much. What’s the most important element you consider in design? Wearability. The garment has to be easy to get on and off, and [must be] comfortable. I always take into consideration the special needs of babies and toddlers. I try to avoid putting things over their heads, and we worry about potty-training needs, as well as sore crawling knees. We try to layer clothing so that it works in all climates and lasts throughout the year. We also try to keep our core pieces versatile enough to grow with the child. Can you tell us about your upcoming collections for Fall 2009? We are so excited about Fall 2009! We are still adhering to our love of classic designs, but using colorful prints and more luxurious fabrics. We are using a lot of taffeta, as well as brocade and embroidered silk. And in response to a huge demand, and literally years of design research, we are finally introducing the perfect pair of soft, worn-in jeans to complement our line. We’ve adjusted some of our patterns, adding more detail, but maintaining the reversibility. And finally, we’ve discovered our love for boys’ clothing! We are introducing what we call the “Old Man Pant”—Gwen Stefani’s son, Kingston, has been running around town in the prototype—as well as comfortable blazers and hoodies. Who are your biggest design heroes? In the beginning, I was really inspired by Paulina Quintana and her use of bold patterns and simple styles, but as I evolve, I’ve come to appreciate not only the designs but the business people behind them, and their ability to market

themselves successfully. I also love Lucky Brand’s children’s line. Do you have a personal look for the lines that you try and maintain? Our goal is to have pieces that can be worn alone as a classical look, or layered for a funkier look. We like to stick with styles that surpass trends. I want our clothes to look just as fashionable 10 years from now, when little sister or brother wears them. I try to avoid any sort of trendy embellishments like rhinestones or little sayings. We feel that market is saturated and has such a short lifespan in the closet. What, and who inspires you? Obviously, my daughters, first and foremost. For instance, my youngest put together this outfit for our trip to Sundance, and it’s been one of my favorite creations of hers: Tights with striped Baby Legs over them, turtle neck, zebrastriped cropped sweatpants that hit just below the knee, and her Right Bank Babies blue and brown ruffle dress—and to top it off, a little crocheted purple dinosaur beanie, and flaming Vans tennis shoes. It’s that kind of creativity I love. And I love that she wears the ruffle dress constantly, not just for special occasions! But I’m also inspired by the ladies I work with. Lydia Dorsey is my co-designer, and she has an amazing, natural sense of style, and we tend to get ideas from everything. I chose our spring colors from a stack of crayons my daughter had organized the other day. How long does it take to create an entire collection? It took a while to get used to having a collection ready about 8-9 months prior to when it will be in stores. How do you all keep the fun in your work? We are very lucky—it’s been really easy. We have an amazing team here. There are 6 of us that work full-time in the office, and we all met in the oddest ways and had a connection that eventually we brought together into this business. We weeded out the negative energy, and created what I think is the perfect design atmosphere. We all just took a work trip together to the Sundance Film Festival for a gifting suite, stayed in a condo together, and enjoyed all the festivities. It seems that everyday, something hilarious happened there. We’ve even been filmed for a reality show based on our office.

Do your husband and kids have a say in the designs? I’m from the south and have a love for the traditional little lace collars on boys and John Johns, but that doesn’t work out here in LA. [My husband’s] been known to pick fabrics and veto any ideas that are too girly. My kids let me know what is uncomfortable and what they like and dislike, but they don’t get to design. When should parents start looking for and buying baby clothes? I truly think parents should wait and buy as the need arises. If you buy too early, you may get stuck with outfits you don’t like anymore. I like the instant gratification of buying something and having them wear it right away. We know that Heidi Klum and Gwen Stefani are among the celebrity parents who own your stuff. How does that feel? Amazing! Both women have such a wonderful sense of style, and I am honored that they like our designs. Plus, getting to see pictures of their little ones in magazines wearing my clothing is the greatest feeling. They look so cute, and I get so much attention and feedback from the photos. Do you have a moment or milestone in your career that you are most proud of? The feeling of going out and seeing a child in one of our designs is amazing— I’ll never get tired of that. Moving into a gorgeous office, our first Nordstrom trunk show, having Baby Couture feature me—these have all been amazing moments. Truthfully, with the evolution of this company, everyday brings happy surprises that I’ll never forget. If you could give parents one tip on dressing their children, what would it be? Hmm. Pick outfits that you love, and that you know your children can wear over and over. And don’t save the fancy stuff for special occasions—every day is a special occasion with a baby, and you should go ahead and put that fancy dress over jeans. Oh yes, spend money on things they will wear over and over and over—like a good pair of soft designer jeans (ours are coming out in Fall). And don’t forget to layer—kids can get away with anything, like Evie’s choice of outfit in the photo, and mix the colors and patterns. Grown-ups and kids both love it! bc

My grandfather created this recipe. He passed it down to my parents, who passed it down to me. It is very special to my family, and these are my favorite cookies ever. Now, I tell my father that I make the best, but he still insists he makes the best! 1 in a mixing bowl, soften the butter with your hands. use your hands a lot in this recipe—don’t be shy to! 2 Mix the butter thoroughly with the sugar until smooth. 3 Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring with your hands until all is incorporated. add flour until dough is firm and not sticky. 4 Take ½ of the dough, and pat it smoothly and evenly into a 12 x16-inch cookie sheet pan. 5 in a separate bowl, mix jelly with a fork until smooth. spread evenly onto cookie dough that’s in the pan. 6 roll the other ½ of the dough into ropes. Place crisscrossed onto the jelly until you run out of dough. 7 Bake in a preheated oven at 350 F for 30 to 40 minutes until golden brown. 8 Cool, and then cut into diamond shapes. Place on plate, then sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

You operate a 4-star restaurant in New York called Chianti. Why did you decide to make a cookbook for kids, and not some “fancy recipes” book?
Because my heart goes out to kids. When I was a kid, the dinner table was for talking, laughing and connecting with the family. It was a fun environment and all children should be able to have that.

How did you come about making a book with the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series authors?
I was at a book convention walking around with my low-carb truffles, and I bumped into Patty Hansen, wife of Mark Hansen. We talked about the idea but nothing had come of it. Then two years later, I got a call from Patty, and it all just came together. They say love for food is in the genes. How much of this passion is in your family?
It is. My grandfather was a professional baker, but it was my grandmother who cooked most of the meals. She didn’t do it professionally, but she had a love for food. At the end of the day, that’s all you need. How is your TV show coming about?
A: It’s slowly coming [about]. Right now, we’re looking for the right network. I’m hoping that Nickelodeon calls soon! (Laughs)

Will you come up with a second installment?
Right now, I’m working on a kid’s cookbook, “Cooking for Dad.” It’s for dads in the kitchen. It’s not a continuation of my first book. How much has the Culinary Institute of America trained you as a cook, compared to starting out in your family’s kitchen at age 6?
The diploma is the big difference. It helps [you] get a better job and make more money. Cooking is not about what you learn in a book; it’s about love for food. It’s about creativity and, of course, you have to have the passion. Don’t get me wrong—I learned a lot though. I still learn every day. Aside from Grandpa Joe’s Jelly Cookies, what are your favorite recipes from the book?
The Tater Tot Bake. It’s beef, potato, and other vegetables all in one, cooked for thirty minutes. It’s a great quick casserole. I also love the Vegetable Hamburger Soup. Any other advice for kids and parents who do not know how to cook?

A
lthough Kelly is undergoing divorce proceedings from her husband (and the father of both her children), businessman Daniel Giersch (this, added to going through the motions of her second pregnancy), Kelly arrives at the location looking fresh and classy as her fascinating matriarch character, Lily van der Woodsen would, in the mega-hit TV show, “Gossip Girl.” Showing up in a striped shirt, jeans, and a camel Hermes coat (no surprise there), you can’t tell she’s with child. She jokes though that once she starts to show, she‘ll be hiding behind fruit bowls and larger purses when they shoot her scenes.
The call time was 8 AM in Beverly Hills, yet Kelly has already made some purchases at Urth Café, including one fresh OJ (as she has taken to an organic lifestyle) for her little blue-eyed god. A surprise guest turned up in the “person” of her other boy, Oliver, the family’s beloved and huggable pooch, who is so well-behaved you won’t even know he’s in the room. On the last shot of the day—thanks to an all-time fave Handy Manny book reading—the aforementioned slumber disruption was forgotten. And in a little garden surrounded by trees, with stuffed animals poised on patio chairs listening in, Hermes shows us captivating grins as he is rained with hugs and kisses from his doting mom.

BC: How did you meet your husband? ExclusivE: A: We met Pregnant Kellyin Dallas, Texas. My father was transferred there for

ife keeps getting better for pop star Christina Aguilera. Her career continues to flourish—she just released a greatest hits compilation, and is currently working on her fourth studio album—and more importantly, her family life can be described as, well, perfect. Happily wed to music executive Jordan Bratman, the hitmaker is a devoted mom to 1-year old Max Liron, who recently celebrated his birthday with a costume party inspired by the children’s book, “Where the Wild Things Are.” Christina may have an extremely busy schedule, but she always makes time for her little one.
