Ainda no que respeita a matéria de responsabilidade social, informo que a SATA foi designada como Entidade Oficial de Formação da American Heart Association (AHA), em parceria com a Ocean Medical, empresa de formação e consultoria na área media. A SATA fica, assim, habilitada para formar operacionais de Desfibrilação Automática Externa e Suporte Básico de Vida, de forma autónoma e direccionada para a actividade de transporte aéreo, de modo a que, nas aeronaves da SATA, os nossos profissionais estejam aptos a oferecer os melhores cuidados de saúde que a legislação relevante permite. Porém, as responsabilidades da SATA são, como se sabe, multifacetadas, constituindo a promoção turística dos Açores uma responsabilidade, simplesmente, fulcral. Neste âmbito, entre as muitas iniciativas levadas a cabo, impossíveis de enumerar aqui exaustivamente, não posso deixar de destacar a muito feliz realização da 46ª Edição do SATA Rallye Açores, prova do IRC, realizada em São Miguel, nos dias 14-16 de Julho, que, fruto da excelência organizativa do Grupo Desportivo Comercial, se saldou por um rotundo êxito desportivo e turístico, com imagens lindíssimas dos Açores a serem difundidas por todo o Mundo. Ainda este Verão, mas já em Setembro, a SATA apoiará o Billabong Azores Islands PRO11, prova do Campeonato Mundial de Surf, WQS. Será mais um evento de nível mundial, que trará centenas de praticantes e jornalistas aos Açores e que, muito importante, fará com que os azuis das nossas águas sejam ainda mais conhecidos em todos o mundo. As iniciativas de promoção turística, como as acima descritas; a abertura de rotas, como as que ligam o Norte da Europa (Estocolmo, Oslo e Copenhaga) aos Açores e as que unem Açores, Madeira, Canárias e Algarve; as parcerias com companhias internacionais de referência; a presença em novos canais de distribuição digitais; e o crescimento em contraciclo, em 2010, estarão, juntamente com outros aspectos da nossa vida empresarial, na base da nomeação da SATA para a categoria de “Melhor Companhia de Aviação” nos “Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2011”. Esta iniciativa, promovida pelo Jornal Publituris, publicação de referência em matéria de turismo em Portugal, tem o propósito de laurear o que de melhor se fez ao nível do Turismo em Portugal, em termos de política de comunicação das empresas e o impacto de cada empresa no referido sector. In this summer edition may I suggest an island which will offer you the tranquility and singularity which only occur when you come across new realities - the Island of Faial. I invite you, therefore, to read through this issue and become inspired with the photographic article dedicated to Faial’s National Park, the first “European Destination of Excellency” in Portugal, as designated by the European Commission. The Island of Faial is rightly known for its natural beauty and it has unique volcanic landscapes like the Vulcão dos Capelinhos, an exuberant testimony of the Azorean Islands. Also on Faial, you can enjoy the charm of the City of Horta, which has a unique relationship of complicity with the sea. The magic of this complicity is reinforced during the summer. To set off to discover the enchantment of the Ilhas do Triângulo, of Faial, São Jorge and Pico , is a suggestion which becomes more and more relevant in today’s agitated times which can be temperated by the beauty and and tranquility of those Islands. Due to our living on Islands, which differ in the oneness of their ecosystems, we of course pay attention to nature and to the integrity of our Environment. Protecting the environment is one of SATA’s concerns; it’s aware of its social responsibility and also of its environmental dimension. With this concern in mind, a new project was created which involves SATA employees – SATA Forest – its aim is to create a forested land representing all of SATA’s destinations. This forested area will be the basis for research, learning and leisure projects, thus contributing to the development of the Economy and Tourism of the Azores, and at the same time protecting our Environment through its forestation; it leads to the building of an adequate collective consciousness which will manage the environmental impact of every and all economic activity; this subject is particularly relevant on the eve of the implementation of the European Union CO2 Emissions Trading System, in 2012. Also regarding social responsibility, I’d like to inform that SATA was nominated the Official Training Entity of the American Heart Association (AHA) together with Ocean Medical, a training and consulting company in the area of media. SATA is, therefore, dully capable of training personnel who will handle the Automated External Defibrillator and the Basic Life Support in an autonomous manner and in the context of air transportation, so that on board SATA aircrafts our professionals can be able to offer the best of health cares allowed by the relevant legislation. But SATA+s responsibilities are, as we know, multifaceted; Azores’ tourism promotion is simply a responsibility of the utmost importance. In this scope, among the many activities carried out, impossible to name them all here, I want to enhance the very accomplished 46th edition of SATA Rallye Açores, part of the IRC, which took place on São Miguel on the 14th -16th July which, due to the excellency of the Grupo Desportivo Comercial’s organization , was a major success in terms of sports and tourism, with beautiful pictures of the Azores being broadcasted all over the World. Still this summer, but in September, SATA will sponsor Billabong Azores Islands PRO11, part of the World Surfing Championship, WQS. It will be one more event at an international level which will bring hundreds of surfers and journalists to the Azores and which, very importantly, will make our blue waters known even more all over the world. The events for the promotion of tourism, as the ones described above, the opening of routes, as those between northern Europe (Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen) and the Azores and the routes which connect the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Algarve, the partnerships with renowned international companies, the presence in new digital networks, the countercyclical growth in 2010 are, together with other aspects of our business, the reason why SATA was nominated in the category of “Best Airline” in “Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2011”. This initiative, launched by Jornal Publituris, a renowned magazine in the area of tourism in Portugal, is aimed at awarding the best in Portugal in the area of tourism, in terms of communication policy of the companies and the impact each company has in the field. O objectivo é criar uma paisagem florestal multi-funcional que servirá de estrutura para projectos de investigação, aprendizagem e lazer, os quais contribuirão eficazmente para o desenvolvimento da economia e turismo dos Açores. A iniciativa, que teve lugar nas proximidades do Miradouro do Pico do Ferro, na Ilha de São Miguel, resultou da colaboração entre a SATA e a Sociedade de Promoção e Gestão Ambiental (SPRAçores).

SATA FOREST IS BORN Several SATA employees met on a Sunday morning, on the 19th June, to give birth to a very special project: the planting of a forest which will symbolize all of SATA’s destinations. The aim is to create a multi-functional forest landscape which will be the basis for research, learning and leisure projects, effectively contributing to the development of the economy and tourism of the Azores. The initiative, which took place near Miradouro do Pico do Ferro on the island of São Miguel, is a result of the collaboration between SATA and Sociedade de Promoção e Gestão Ambiental (SPRAçores) (Society for the Promotion and Environment Management of the Azores).

O passatempo “À Descoberta dos Açores” desafiou os utilizadores da rede social a partilharem a beleza das várias ilhas dos Açores em imagens e palavras, enviando fotos e textos originais. As participações mais criativas foram premiadas com códigos de desconto de 40%, 30% e 20% para viagens a realizar entre o Continente e os Açores, e a Madeira e os Açores. No total, foram oferecidos 27 códigos de desconto.
PASTIME ON FACEBOOK OFFERED DISCOUNTS UP TO 40% During nine consecutive weeks, SATA offered discounts up to 40%, in a pastime which took place on SATA’s Facebook fan page. The pastime ‘ Discovering the Azores’ challenged users of the Social Network to share the beauty of the several islands of the Azores in pictures and words by sending original photos and texts. The most creative entries were awarded with discount codes of 40%, 30% and 20% for flights taking place between Mainland and the Azores and between Madeira and the Azores. Altogether, 27 discount codes were offered.
GRUPO SATA ENTIDADE OFICIAL DE FORMAÇÃO DA AMERICAN HEART O Grupo SATA foi designado como entidade oficial de formação da American Heart Association (AHA), em parceria com a empresa de formação e consultoria na área médica Ocean Medical. Os instrutores da SATA, devidamente certificados pela AHA, estão habilitados a ensinar técnicas de reanimação cardiopulmonar em adultos, crianças e lactentes, através de massagem cardíaca e ventilação, utilizando um desfibrilador automático externo. Este dispositivo aplica uma descarga eléctrica no tórax, impedindo a fibrilação ventricular, um dos motivos de paragem cardiorrespiratória. SATA GROUP OFFICIAL TRAINING BODY FOR AMERICAN HEART SATA Group has been appointed as the official training body of the American Heart Association (AHA), in partnership with Ocean Medical, a firm in the area of training and consulting. SATA’s instructors, dully certified by AHA, are able to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques in adults, children and infants, through cardiac massage and ventilation, using an external automatic defibrillator. This device applies an electrical discharge to the chest, preventing ventricular fibrillation, one of the causes of cardio-respiratory arrest.

O Feedback dos agentes de viagens foi bastante positivo e os adjectivos “inesquecíveis e fantásticos” foram largamente usados para descrever os momentos vividos durante o evento.
CHARMING ENDEAVOR AT SÃO MIGUEL Taking advantage of the SATA Rallye Açores, SATA has organized a “Fam
Trip” – a familiarization trip – with São Miguel as its destination, through Abreu Travel Agency agents. In a series of activities presented by SATA Rallye Açores are: the natural beauties of Ilha Verde and its delicious food; the agents had the opportunity to experience what they would later have the chance to transmit to their clients. The travel agents’ Feedback was quite positive and the adjectives, “unforgettable and fantastic”, were largely used to describe the moments experienced during the event.

PASSATEMPOS NO FACEBOOK DEDICADOS AO SATA RALLYE AÇORES Num gesto comemorativo da realização da 46ª edição do SATA Rallye Açores, a SATA realizou dois passatempos, cujos prémios foram três credenciais VIP para o rallye e um capacete autografado pelos pilotos. Os passatempos, que consistiram na resposta a perguntas sobre o rallye e na criação de frases originais, tiveram dezenas de participações, levando a página da SATA no Facebook a alcançar mais de 16.000 seguidores. PASTIMES ON FACEBOOK DEDICATED TO SATA RALLYE AÇORES To commemorate SATA Rallye Açores’ 46th edition, SATA organized two pastimes. The awards were three VIP credentials for the rally and a helmet with the pilots’ autographs. The pastimes, which consisted on answering questions about the rally and coming up with original sentences, had scores of participants, which led SATA’s Facebook page to have more than 16.000 followers.

This competition, counting for the International Rally Challenge (IRC) and, for the time being, the only one to take pace in Portugal, has brought the Azores a lot of publicity and, consequently, has promoted the Azores as a destination at a national and international level, mainly through the Eurosport channel .

Afinal, os prazeres da boa mesa não se podem dissociar do actor e Fernando Mendes tinha um jantar marcado no Solar dos Nunes. Este é um dos inúmeros restaurantes que frequenta por todo o País, Açores e Madeira incluídos. Apelidado carinhosamente pelo seu público de “Gordo”, apesar de ser um bom garfo não sabe cozinhar. “Tenho muita contradição dentro de mim”, ironiza. Anda nas consultas do nutricionista Fernando Póvoas para ver se emagrece, mas não é um bom cartão-de-visita para o médico, já que se mantém fiel ao seu peso. “Pois é… o Póvoas é um homem e um médico extraordinário e cada vez tem mais clientes e eu devo ser quem lhe faz mais publicidade, portanto não se percebe”, diz, entre risos. “Honestamente, já perdi 14 quilos, mas depois quis encontrá-los e cá estão eles de novo. O peso, a nível de imagem, não me preocupa, mas sei que tenho de ter cuidado, porque não é bom para a saúde. Por isso, frequento um ginásio, o que me obriga a levantar mais cedo e a fazer mais refeições por dia – praticamente só lanchava e jantava, o que era péssimo.”

This is one of the many restaurants he goes to all over the country, including the Azores and Madeira. Tenderly called “Fat” by his public, despite loving to eat he doesn’t know how to cook. “I have a lot of contradictions in me”, he mocks. He is a patient of nutritionist Fernando Póvoas to try and lose weight, but he doesn’t set a good example, because his weight remains the same. “Well…Póvoas is an extraordinary man and doctor with a growing number patients, and I must be the one that gives him the most publicity, so it’s hard to understand”, he says, between giggles. “Honestly, I’ve lost 14 kilos, but then I wanted to find them again and here they are. My weight, as far as my image is concerned, doesn’t worry me, but I know I have to be careful, because it’s not good for my health. So, I go to a gym, which makes me have to get up earlier and eat more meals a day – I’d practically only have a snack in the afternoon and then dinner, which was terrible.” Moving the conversation from food to his profession, he

Da mesa para a profissão, diz que não tem jeito para apresentador, mas a verdade é que faz de O Preço Certo um caso de sucesso há oito anos. “Talvez porque sou eu que estou ali, genuinamente, e isso cria uma sintonia muito grande com o público”, atira, à guisa de explicação. Também ajuda o facto de gostar de trabalhar na RTP: “Eu não os chateio; eles não me chateiam; os resultados do programa são simpáticos, o ordenado é confortável… que mais poderia querer?” Agora e durante dois meses o tempo é de férias, devido à pausa nas gravações do concurso. A convite de Fernando Póvoas vai 15 dias para casa do médico, no Brasil (país que visita com regularidade), e pensa também embarcar num super paquete para um cruzeiro. Depois, é o regresso à rotina. Onde não existem pausas é no seu relacionamento com os filhos, a Nádia, de 25 anos, e o Vítor, de 19. Nunca viveu com eles, mas falam-se todos os dias, e existe uma enorme cumplicidade entre os três. “Damo-nos muito bem. Tenho um amor muito grande por eles”, confessa com emoção. No entanto, apesar da proximidade que sempre manteve com ambos, “sinto que os vi crescer e que se calhar poderia ter estado mais tempo com eles. Mas tenho ali grandes amigos, sem dúvida”.

At the invitation of Fernando Póvoas, he’ll be going two weeks to the doctor’s house in Brazil (a country he visits regularly), and he is also planning on embarking on a super liner for a cruise. After that, it’s back to routine. On the other hand, there are no breaks in his relationship with his children, Natália, 25, and Vítor, 19. He never lived with them, but they speak every day, and there’s a great entente among the three of them. “ We get along very well. I love them dearly”, he admits moved. Nevertheless, despite being so close to them, “I feel I saw them grow up and that maybe I could’ve spent more time with them. But they are my friends, I’m absolutely sure”. A possible expla-

O modo como estes factores se interligam foi aliás um dos factores que mais pesou no sucesso da candidatura faialense. Faial National Park was the first EDEN prize awarded to Portugal. The initiative, of the responsibility of the European Commission, annually appoints the European Destinations of Excellence which promote sustainable development models. We went over to Faial to understand the reason for this. There
are very few places in which history, nature and tradition complement themselves in such an exemplary way as in Faial. This is especially evident in the Faial National Park, the first Portuguese destination to be awarded the EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) prize. The way in which these factors are linked among them was, in fact, one of the factors which weighed in on the success of the Faial applica-

O trilho do Perímetro da Caldeira, circunda a cratera do extinto vulcão que deu origem à ilha e é um dos mais procurados pelos caminhantes. Apart from that, seven pedestrian trails were also recovered with interpretation stages throughout the routes; partnerships with local tour operators were also established, which also contributed to the awarding of the prize. One of the most ambitious projects is the Trilho dos 10 Vulcões (The Trail of the 10 Volcanoes) which associates the trails of Perímetro da Caldeira, Levada, Capelo-Capelinhos and Subida ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos, in a total of 27 kms, of which we are visiting, on foot, some of the most emblematic parts.

We move on, with no hurries, toward Capelinhos, the place where the last eruption on the island took place in 1957; once there we visit the modern Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão (Center for the Interpretation of the Volcano), built on the ground floors of the former lighthouse, today totally burled under volcanic sand. We return to Horta in the evening, still in time for a reinvigorating swim in the warm waters of Baía de Porto Pim, the former whaling industry center on the island. Depois, já com o sol a pôr-se, sentamo-nos na esplanada do Peter, outra das instituições do Faial, onde, após um dia de intensas caminhadas, bebemos um tradicional (e merecido) gin tónico com vista para o Pico…

Where to eat Among the meat dishes, we can mention linguiça (a kind of sausage) with yam, molha de carne (a kind of meat stew) or cracklings in a garlic and wine marinade, but the wide variety of fish adds a number of other dishes to the island’s list of traditional dishes such as: fish broth, caldeiradas (fish stews) or octopus wine stew. There is also seafood (lobster, slipper lobster and deep-water crab) and, for dessert, the Faial cheeses.

Where to stay Apart from the traditional hotels at Horta, overlooking the Canal and Pico Island, rural tourism on the island is increasing. On one of Horta’s hills, overlooking the city, the bay and the islands of São Jorge and Pico, the Faial Resort Hotel is located in the former district built for the employees of the Western Union Telegraph Company – which, at the end of the 19th century, laid the famous Submarine Cable, which would revolutionize the transmissions between Europe and America. Maintaining the architecture of those days, it opened in the beginning of the 70s and is, to this day, one of the references in hotel industry not only of Faial, but also of the whole archipelago.

ão 12h30 de domingo, 10 de Junho, e o sol brilha na praia do Tamariz, no Estoril. Cerca de cem mil pessoas estão com os olhos postos no céu. Vieram assistir ao Estoril Airshow e, muitas deslocaram-se especialmente para verem Diana Gomes da Silva, a única piloto de acrobacia aérea da Península Ibérica e uma das mais jovens do mundo. Numa actuação bastante aplaudida, a também piloto de linha aérea da SATA Internacional distribuiu charme e emoções, interagindo com as pessoas numa mistura de ousadia e animação, movendo o avião nos céus numa coreografia que parecia saudar o público. Pela forma harmoniosa como observamos o avião a dançar nos céus, parece que voar é algo muito simples para Diana. Na verdade, essa sensação é conseguida com muitas horas de treino intensivo. O espectáculo aéreo começa a ser preparado cerca de um ano antes, e cada manobra é executada pelo menos cinquenta vezes na perfeição, até ser exibida. Diana herdou geneticamente o gosto pela aviação - o avô materno foi piloto e o pai médico na Força Aérea -, mas a sua extraordinária capacidade técnica devese, sobretudo, à grande dedicação e à extensa formação que acumulou. DANCING IN THE SKY Diana is of the opinion that the freedom she has in aerobatics is not to be compared with any other sport or activity. The adrenaline she feels during the maneuvers lingers for hours! It’s 12.30 pm, Sunday June 10th, and the sun is shining at the Tamariz beach in Estoril. Around a hundred thousand people have their eyes set in the sky. They’ve come for the Estoril Airshow and many of them came on purpose to see Diana Gomes da Silva, the only aerobatics pilot in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the youngest in the world. In a very much applauded exhibition, this as well airline pilot for SATA Internacional, spread her charm and emotions interacting with the audience in a mixture of boldness and liveliness, moving her plane in the air in a choreography that seemed as if she was greeting the public. From the harmonious way in which we observe the plane dancing in the skies, it seems flying is something very simple for Diana. The truth is, this is achieved with many hours of intensive training. The aerial show starts being prepared roughly one year before and each maneuver is practiced at least fifty times until it’s perfect before it’s exhibited. Diana has genetically inherited her passion for aviation – her maternal grandfather was a pilot and her father an Air Force doctor. -, but her extraordinary technical capacity is due, mostly, to her great dedication and to the extensive training she has acquired. This training enabled her to react with extreme calm and concentration when confronted with emergencies, as when one of her engines stopped working as she was flying over Sintra and she was forced to land in the nearest runway; she overcame this situation successfully.

In aerobatics there’s no place for improvisation. All the movements are strictly planned and performed according to a well-defined scheme. At 26, beautiful and with an intelligent sense of humor, we can sense Diana’s energy and contagious determination. This might have been one of the reasons for the tribute the President of the Republic, Professor Cavaco Silva, paid her in the commemorations of Portugal Day. She was also invited by the Instituto Português da Juventude (The Portuguese Youth Institute) to be the ambassador of the International Youth Year, which made her very proud. In fact, one of her objectives is to incite young people to follow their dreams and lead them to believe that if you really enjoy what you do, anything is possible. Together with this objective she has yet other ambitious goals: to take part in the Reno Air Race in the United States of America and in the Red Bull international competition, for which she needs sponsors. Planning ahead is not something she generally does. For the time being, what she really wants to do, and for a long time, is what she enjoys the most: getting on her biplane and her streak across the skies!

esde cedo que Paulo do Vale encontrou a sua vocação na oficina de ourives. Ao labor quotidiano de artesão e ao trabalho criativo em projecto, junta a dedicação graciosa à manutenção do tesouro do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres e ao ofício de avaliador oficial e ensaiador da Casa da Moeda. Como artista, tem tido um percurso reconhecidamente invulgar, apesar da sua juventude e da insularidade. Foi, no entanto, em 2004, que surgiu a grande novidade: Paulo do Vale descobre o “ouro negro dos Açores”. Não sendo Portugal um país produtor de materiais gemológicos, foi com agrado que o artista reconheceu a beleza e as potencialidades do basalto insular, quando aplicado em jóias de prata e de ouro de tradição portuguesa. O basalto, uma conhecida rocha vulcânica negra, não é, gemologicamente falando, uma pedra preciosa, nem um material nobre tradicional. Todavia, no contexto em que Paulo do Vale o utiliza nas suas criações, passa a ter um valor quase mítico: é um pouco dos Açores e de Portugal que ali está. Este terá sido um forte argumento para a escolha de um colar da sua autoria como presente de Estado à Rainha da Jordânia, durante a vista oficial do Presidente da República àquele país do Médio Oriente.

THE AZORES’ BLACK GOLD There is gold in the Azores and it’s black! It’s not the gold and noble metal, nor the increasingly rare hidrocarbonate! It’s the Azorean basalt of unique jewels, created with the quality seal of artist Paulo do Vale. Paulo do Vale found his vocation as a jeweller at an early age. To the daily labour as a craftsman and the creative work in projects, he adds his gracious dedication to the maintenance of the treasure of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres and the trade of official evaluator at the Casa da Moeda mint. As an artist, he has had an uncommon route, despite his youth and origin. It was, however, in 2004 that the big news arrived: Paulo do Vale discovers the “black gold of the Azores”. With Portugal not being a producer of gems, the artist was pleased to see the beauty and potential of the basalt, when applied to silver and gold jewels with Portuguese tradition. The basalt, a known black volcanic rock, is not a precious stone, nor a noble traditional material. However, in the context in which Paulo do Vale uses it in his creations, it almost has a mythical value: there is a bit of the Azores and Portugal in there. This played a strong part in the selection of one of his necklaces as a State Gift to the Queen of Jordan, during the Portuguese President’s visit to the Middle Eastern country. Funcionando as jóias não apenas como acessórios de moda, mas também como elementos simbólicos, por vezes até como talismãs, o facto de nestas estar materializada uma porção da terra-mãe confere-lhes um significado singular de grande nobreza. Daí a expressão “ouro negro” aqui atribuída ao basalto. Além deste interessante simbolismo, ao valor das peças de Paulo do Vale acrescenta-se o seu trabalho manual, o único original nos Açores, na mais antiga tradição da ourivesaria portuguesa, e o enriquecimento que algumas das peças têm com aplicação de outras gemas, como, por exemplo, os diamantes. O design, simplicidade e contemporaneidade destas jóias, que são irrepetíveis, têm merecido reconhecimento, a vários níveis, não só nas sucessivas participações que tem registado no espaço dedicado aos novos criadores na mais importante feira de joalharia nacional, a Portojóia, como também com prémios nacionais de grande relevo, como o primeiro prémio no concurso VIP Jóias de 2006 e um honroso terceiro lugar no concurso de design de joalharia do Museu da Presidência da República, em 2007, tendo vencido em 2008 o concurso promovido pelo Museu Berardo, entre 200 designers, alguns deles internacionais.

The design, simplicity and modernity of these unrepeatable pieces have earned recognition at various levels, not only in the successive participation at spaces for new creation at Portugal’s most important jewellery fair Portjóia, and with prizes such as 1st place in the VIP Jóias of 2006 contest and a honorouble 3rd place in the jewellery design contest at the Portuguese Presidency Museum in 2007. In 2008, he won the contest promoted by the Berardo Museum beating 200 other designers, some of them international.

ENTHRALLING TO THE SENSES If a continent could fit on an island, then Gran Canaria would be a “continent-island”. A haven for tourists all year round, it has more than just the sun and the sea to offer. The mild
climate and its stunning coastline have turned the Spanish Canary islands into one of the most coveted places in the whole world. But, once there, the visitor discovers charming sceneries which are not always to be found on postcard photos. Gran Canaria, the third largest island of the archipelago and the second most populated, is such a case. If the 60 kilometers of beach have turned it into a summer destination resort, the considerable amount of natural area – it’s been classified as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and over 40% of this area is protected – invites visitors to take a stroll or cycle through paths full of

In 1861 a lighthouse was built on one of the ends; it was first used in 1890. Today it’s inserted in a very busy promenade with stores, cafés and tourists. After the body is invigorated, off we go in search of other delights for our mind. Next stop: Las Palmas the co-capital, together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, of the autonomous community of the Canaries. We are amazed at the quantity of houses on the slopes, the color of the façades, the heritage and the friendliness of the people. The La Vegueta District is a pearl of colonial architecture and the Santa Ana square, a mixture of Gothic with Neo-Classical. Nearby, we can see Casa de Colón, one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. You should also visit the Canary Museum, homage to the Guanche people who used to live on the island until the Spanish colonization. Those of you who are romantic, should go and contemplate the sunset at the picturesque Puerto de Mógan. An island to be enjoyed with all our senses wide-awake. The several kilo-
meters of coastline, with extensive sandy beaches and a calm sea, is the island’s trademark image together with the well-known Playa del Inglés, a summer resort near the Maspalomas dunes.

COMO CRESCEM OS ANANASES Nas Estufas Arruda, em São Miguel, a cultura do ananás ainda é feita como antigamente. Um local onde memória e tradição não são meros conceitos abstractos, mas sim um testemunho vivo da história dos Açores
e
ntrar por estes portões é como voltar atrás no tempo. Aqui, a produção de ananases ainda é completamente artesanal, como era no início do século XX, quando, após a crise da Laranja, este fruto começou a ser cultivado em São Miguel, como substituto dos citrinos. Desde sempre aberto ao público, recebe cerca de 60 mil visitantes por ano, mas justificar-se-iam muitos mais, pois, conforme diz a actual proprietária, descendente da família Arruda, ”temos aqui um testemunho vivo de um período muito importante da história dos Açores, que deve ser conhecido por todos”. A visita é grátis e permite conhecer as diversas fases do cultivo do ananás, desde brolho (como são chamados os pequenos rebentos) até ao fruto chegar à mesa. Demora quase dois anos a produzir um ananás com qualidade. A propriedade conta com 28 estufas de 700 m2 e mais uma de 2500 m2, que é a maior da ilha. Foram todas construídas nos anos 20 e continuam, ainda hoje, a funcionar como então: a água da chuva é canalizada para os tanques de rega e o controlo da temperatura feito com cal. O resultado é um fruto doce e suculento, com um sabor a velhos tempos como já é raro encontrar…
HOW PINEAPPLES GROW In the Estufas Arruda (Arruda Greenhouses), in São Miguel, the growing of pineapples is still carried out as before. A place where memory and tradition are not mere abstract concepts, but a living testimony of the history of the Azores.

To pass these gates is as if you went back in time. Here the production of pineapples is still totally done using the old methods which were in use at the beginning of the 20th century when, after the Orange crisis, this fruit started being grown on São Miguel, as a replacement for citrus. It has always been open to the public, and it receives around 60 thousand visitors a year,: “we have a living testimony here of a very important period in the history of the Azores, which everybody should know about”. The visit is free and allows us to get to know the several stages of the growing of pineapples, from side shoots (as small shoots are known) till the fruit reaches our table. It takes nearly two years to produce a quality pineapple. The property has twenty-eight 700- square- meter greenhouses and 2500 square meter one, which is the largest on the island. They were all built in the 20s and, to this day, are still functioning. As back then: the rain is directed to the irrigation tanks and the temperature is controlled with lime. The result is a sweet and juicy fruit, with a taste of the old days, something which is getting harder and harder to find…
THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION OF THE ESTUFAS ARRUDA is sold locally. Apart from the fruit, it also produces chutney, jams, vinegars, juices candy and liqueurs. All of this made with pineapple.

ão há só tangos em Paris é o mais recente trabalho de Cristina Branco. Caleidoscópio de sonoridades, prova a versatilidade da cantora. Afinal, nem só de fado vive a voz de Cristina Branco. Nascida em Almeirim, em pleno Ribatejo, terra da lezíria e da tauromaquia, não cresceu imbuída pelo fado. “Apesar de não ser um corpo estranho, nunca foi algo tão entranhado na cultura das gentes [ribatejanas] como em Lisboa”, afirma. Porém, foi no fado que se aventurou. “A descoberta da minha voz fez-se aos 23 anos quando ouvi ao vivo – e depois de um longo processo de estupefacção e enamoramento com a voz de Amália –, o som das guitarras do fado. Então, cheguei a casa dos meus pais e disse que o que queria da vida era cantar, espiar o medo”, recorda. Antes, aos 18 anos, já o avô materno lhe oferecera um disco de Amália Rodrigues. “Aí, o que aconteceu foi uma empatia”.
Namíbia, Botswana e Zimbabué. E acalenta o sonho de ir ao Sri Lanka e ao Butão. Na bagagem leva sempre consigo livros e o iPod, assim como “a saudade e os sentidos bem alerta”.
Não há só tangos em Paris (Paris is not the only place where tangos exist) is Cristina Branco’s latest work. A kaleidoscope of sounds, it is the proof of the singer’s versatility. In the end, Cristina Branco’s voice is not used only for fado. Born in Almeirim, in the heart of Ribatejo, home of the lezíria and tauromachy, she did not grow up with fado. “Although it is not unusual, it has never been so deep-seated in the culture of the people of Ribatejo as it is in Lisbon, she states. Nevertheless, she decided to follow this path. “I discovered my voice at 23 when I heard live – and after a long process of bewilderment and infatuation with Amália’s voice -, the sound of fado guitars. So when I got to my parents’ and told them that what I wanted to do in life was to sing, to exorcize fear, she recalls. Before, at 18, her maternal grandfather had already offered her one of Amália’s records. “What happened back then was an empathy.”
Married to the travel journalist Tiago Salazar, the singer recalls with pleasure the tour they made between South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. And she
dreams of going to Sri Lanka and Bhutan. In her luggage she always takes books and her iPod, as well as “the longing and all senses alert.”

Mas o destino estava traçado. Começou a cantar de forma profissional, gravou diversos álbuns – Não há só tangos em Paris, lançado este ano, é o 11.º –, actuou em todo o mundo e foi alvo de rasgados elogios pela crítica. Com influências musicais tão diversas como blues, Regina Duarte, Chico Buarque, Sinatra ou Ella Fitzgerald, Fausto ou Sérgio Godinho, Serge Gainsbourg ou Leo Ferré, Cristina Branco – que se assume, acima de tudo, como cantora – interpretou canções do ícone da música portuguesa Zeca Afonso. O resultado foi o álbum Abril. Porque Cristina canta fado e não só. E esse “não só” serve-lhe de “motor para um crescimento interpretativo, musical”. Crescimento que foi ainda mais longe no trabalho Não há só tangos em Paris. “Une tango e fado numa linguagem própria”, descreve a cantora. De momento, e até Novembro, Cristina Branco encontra-se em tour pela Europa, da Bósnia à Áustria, da Finlândia à Servia. Encontros que deixam marcas indeléveis. Prova irredutível da universalidade da música, e da emoção.

But her fate was sealed. She started singing professionally, she recorded several albums - Não há só tangos em Paris, released this year, is her 11th - she has performed all over the world and has been acclaimed by the critics. With musical influences as varied as the blues, Regina Duarte, Chico Buarque, Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald, Fausto or Sérgio Godinho, Serge Gainsbourg or Leo Ferré, Cristina Branco – who considers herself to be, above all, a singer – has performed songs by Portuguese icon Zeca Afonso. A bordo do Creoula No regresso a Lisboa de uma viagem científica pelos arquipélagos dos Açores e da Madeira, o Creoula, navio de treino de mar da Marinha Portuguesa, recebeu o Corpo de Escutas de Ponta Delgada (1197 - S. José - Jacques Cousteau) para uma semana de aventura em pleno Atlântico no âmbito da actividade “O Mar que nos Chama V”.

omeçou por ser uma viagem que reuniu cientistas de diferentes instituições num projecto comum coordenado pela EMAM (Estrutura de Missão para os Assuntos do Mar) no âmbito da biodiversidade. Visava proceder a um levantamento das espécies marinhas ao largo do Porto Santo, do Funchal e das Formigas, com escala em S. Miguel. Habituado às viagens a bordo de navios da Marinha Britânica, o Corpo de Escutas de Ponta Delgada viu aqui a oportunidade de aproveitar “a boleia” até Lisboa e passar uma semana no mar a bordo do Creoula, ideia bem acolhida por todos. Um mês, quase 80 mergulhos e quarenta mil fotografias mais tarde, os cientistas assistiram ao embarque dos escuteiros marítimos. O Creoula é um lugre de quatro mastros construído em 1937, no estaleiro Naval de Lisboa, à época concessionado à CUF. Destinava-se à pesca do bacalhau nos bancos da Terra Nova, nas águas geladas da Gronelândia. Só não foi abatido por acaso. Porque duas pessoas se cruzaram nas escadas do mesmo edifício: o armador e o secretário de Estado das Pescas. A mística que já então o envolvia aliada à excelente qualidade de construção permitiram a sua reconversão. “Surgiu primeiro a ideia de o transformar num museu. Sugestão posta de parte após uma vistoria rigorosa. Seria reconvertido em navio de treino de mar e entregue à Marinha Portuguesa em 1985. Será um dos poucos navios europeus que conta com uma guarnição militar e

ON BOARD THE CREOULA On its way back to Lisbon from a scientific voyage to the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, the Creoula, a sea training ship of the Portuguese navy, welcomed on board the Corpo Nacional de Escutas (National Corps of Scouts - Portuguese Catholic Scouting) of Ponta Delgada (1197 S.José – Jacques Cousteau) for a week of adventure in the middle of the Atlantic as part of the activity “O Mar que nos Chama V” ( The Sea that Calls us V). It started off as a scientific trip which brought together scientists from several institutions in a common project coordinated by EMAM (Estrutura de Missão para os Assuntos do Mar) in the scope of biodiversity. Its aim was to map all the maritime species off the coast of Porto Santo, Funchal and Formigas, stopping at São Miguel. Used to traveling on board the ships of the British Navy, the Corpo Nacional de Escutas of Ponta Delgada saw the opportunity of taking advantage of this “lift” to Lisbon and spend a whole week at sea on board the Creoula, this was well accepted by everyone. One month, almost 80 dives and forty thousand photos later, the scientists saw the sea scouts embark. The Creoula is a four-mast lugger built in 1937 in the Lisbon shipyard, at the time under the concession of CUF. It was used to fish cod in the Newfoundland banks, in the cold waters of Greenland. It wasn’t destroyed by chance. “Because two people met on the stairs of the same building: the ship owner and

Realça o espírito de grupo que aqui encontrou; o convívio da guarnição militar com escuteiros e cientistas, como é o caso desta viagem; a partilha de tarefas e a responsabilização de cada um. São 96 pessoas ao todo. Militares, cientistas e o grupo de escuteiros. O espaço gere-se ao milímetro. As refeições marcam o ritmo dos dias, as tarefas de bordo são partilhadas por todos. Fazem-se turnos de quatro horas: ao leme, na cozinha, na copa, na vigia. Ou na “limitação de avarias”, saída onde se encontra todo o equipamento necessário à resolução de emergências. O dia começa às sete com o toque da alvorada. A faina geral reúne todos no convés. É aqui que o Mestre distribui as tarefas pelos grupos. Içam-se velas, limpam-se camarotes, corredores, casas de banho. De fora fica quem esteve de turno durante a noite. O mar abre o apetite, diz alguém, a caminho do refeitório. Muitos experimentam pela primeira vez o portuguesíssimo arroz de pato; empadão de peixe; e coelho. Um mundo de novos paladares, feito de pequenas descobertas. O tempo aqui passa lento. Sem rede de telemóveis. Sem televisão. Conversa-se muito. Há tempo para um livro, para partilhar imagens ou para um jogo de cartas. Trocam-se ideias e endereços electrónicos. Pouco depois do jantar, o padeiro mistura já a farinha, o fermento e a água. Amassa o pão que molda e leva ao forno. Há quem esteja a dormir. Ou quase. A maioria convive e espera pelos pãezinhos com chouriço servidos a meia-noite.

the Secretary of State for Fisheries.” The mystique around it together with the excellent quality of its build, made its adaptation possible. “ The first idea was to turn it into a museum. This idea was set aside after a rigorous inspection. It would be adapted into a sea training ship and handed over to the Portuguese navy in 1985. It’s maybe the only European ship to have a military and a civilian garrison.” Cornélio da Silva, its commander, summarizes in this way the story of the Creoula, “ a ship which is well-cherished by those who know it despite barely being known by society.” He points out the team spirit he found on the ship; the familiarity of the military crew with the scouts and scientists; the sharing of chores and the fact of every one being responsible. There are 96 people altogether: the military, the scientists and the group of scouts. The space is managed to the millimeter. Meals mark the rhythm of the days, the chores on board are shared by everyone. There are four-hour shifts at the rudder, in the kitchen, in the scullery, at the sentry, or at the “ avoiding breakdowns”, an exit where all the necessary equipment used to solve emergencies is kept. The day begins at seven with the reveille. The general chores gather everyone on deck. It’s here that the Master assigns the several tasks to groups. Masts are hoisted, cabins, corridors and bathrooms are cleaned. Those who were doing the night shift are exempt. The sea whets our appetite, someone says, on his way to the dining room. Many of them have, for the very first time , the very typical Portuguese duck rice; fish shepherd’s pie and rabbit. A universe of new flavors, made up of little discoveries. Time goes by slowly. No cell phone signal. No TV. Little chatting. There’s time for a book, to share images and for a card game. Ideas are exchanged as well as email addresses. Not long after dinner, the baker mixes flour, yeast and water. He kneads the dough, makes the bread and puts it in the oven. Some are already asleep. Or nearly. The majority is socializing and waits for the bread with chorizo served at midnight.
Telmo, a young fisherman from Rabo de Peixe, surprises us with an accordion. He sings “Pezinho da Vila”. Shyly, at first. Soon after, everyone joins in. There are even castanets.

uma zona antiga e nobre de Lisboa, em S. Bento, a espreitar o palácio que a República elegeu para sede do Parlamento, encontra-se um restaurante de cozinha japonesa que tem a particularidade de privilegiar o peixe dos Açores. O conceito é simples, em termos de gastronomia, porque se fundamenta na conhecida relação do peixe com a cozinha japonesa, mas original, porque conjuga a melhor matéria-prima que se pode encontrar com a técnica culinária e o sentido estético mais apurados. Esta ligação virtuosa, que dignifica tanto a arte culinária japonesa, quanto o produto açoriano, é uma atracção irresistível para os gastrónomos. E Lisboa agradece. A ideia foi do agrónomo João Pereira, conhecedor dos produtos açorianos, por motivos profissionais, e apreciador da gastronomia japonesa, por gosto pessoal. Ante a variedade e a qualidade do peixe dos Açores, designadamente o atum, tradicionalmente exportado para o Japão por ser dos melhores do mundo, decidiu convidar um mestre de sushi, João Soeiro, para o preparar e apresentar num espaço próprio, em Lisboa. Assim nasceu o restaurante, lugar de celebração, conforme o termo japonês que lhe dá o nome: Kampai.

A remarkable restaurant which allies two worlds in the field of gastronomy: Japanese cooking and fish from Azorean seas. In an old and noble neighborhood of Lisbon, S. Bento, very near the palace the Republic chose to be its Parliament, you can find a restaurant specialized in Japanese food which has the particularity of privileging fish from the Azores. The concept is simple: in what gastronomy is concerned because it is based on the well-known connection of fish with Japanese food, but original, because it allies the best raw material one can come across with the most refined cooking technique and aesthetic. This virtuous link, which dignifies the Japanese cooking art together with the Azorean product, is an irresistible attraction for connoiseurs. And Lisbon is thankful. The idea was of agronomist João Pereira, a connoisseur of Azorean products and of Japanese food, by personal preference. Due to the variety and quality of the fish from the Azores, namely tuna, traditionally exported to Japan because it’s one of the best in the world, he decided to invite a sushi chef, João Soeiro to prepare it and present it in a space of its own, in Lisbon. Thus this restaurant was born, a place of celebration, as the Japanese name it bears: Kampai. The room is modern, the decoration minimalist with motifs related to the sea and the Azores, an atmosphere with charm, at the same time elegant and laid back. As for the food, it

reveals tastes and aromas of the products in their purest form and they are presented as works of art, in the true Japanese style, and we are marveled at the quality of the Azorean raw material: the tuna, the greater amberjack, the giant squid, triggerfish, snapper, sea bream and horse mackerel, for instance. The preparation is very diverse, from sashimi, or raw fish carpaccio to sushi in all its varieties – a little rice lumps with the fish on top (nigiri), rolls of appealing colors with fish and rice (makimono), little rice lumps with fish and roe or something beaten on top (gunkan), a cone wrapped in a sea weed (temaki) – to tempura, the mild Japanese deep fry of Portuguese influence. We call your attention to the wide variety of delicious appetizers: tai kimuchi, a sliced snapper lightly marinated to acquire an acid and spicy flavor; ika mentaiko, an appealing mixture of white meat, tender and sweet, of giant squid with salty cod fish roe; yosa, delicate Japanese raviolis; ebo horense, spinach with shrimp which the chef’s special sauce enhances; kaki fry, breaded oysters; vinegary salmon and snapper sunomonos; and a lot more. Whenever the word route is mentioned, travels, adventures, destinations and fantastic and marvelous stories come to our mind. This is what this new route suggests, it only started a year ago, but it has already generated great enthusiasm. It’s called Rota das Estrelas (Route of the Stars) and it has to do, not with seafarers of epics of long ago, but with great chefs. The Rota das Estrelas brings together the best chefs working in Portugal, all of them awarded with stars by the red Michelin guide, they share knowledge and friendship with two main objectives: to discover new flavors and to win the favor of the palates of the most demanding of commensals.

Contactados previamente, todos indicaram os produtos de que necessitavam e só na manhã do jantar inaugural é que se reuniram todos pela primeira vez. As opções recaíram essencialmente nos mais gabados produtos portugueses: polvo da costa, salmonetes de Setúbal, lavagante azul, carne de porco preto, morcela de Monchique, entre outros. Uma vez em terras lusas, haveriam de explorar a costa e viajar de norte a sul na demanda do melhor que aqui se pode encontrar. Três dias, quatro chefes, dois pasteleiros, muita criatividade e refeições inesquecíveis - eis, em síntese, o resultado da Rota das Estrelas no Funchal.

AGAGEM DE MÃO É permitido transportar na cabina um volume de bagagem de mão. Esta não deve exceder, nos voos da SATA Air Açores e da SATA Internacional, na classe económica (SATA Classic) os 55 cm x 40cm x20cm de dimensão, nem peso superior a 6 kg. Em classe executiva (SATA Plus), as dimensões da bagagem não devem exceder os 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, nem peso superior a 10 Kg.
RESPONSABILIDADE POR PERDAS E DANOS DE BAGAGEM A responsabilidade por perdas ou danos causados na bagagem registada está limitada a 1.131 DSE, aproximadamente 1.200 Euros (dependendo do câmbio). Este limite poderá ser superior, se o passageiro efectuar uma declaração prévia do valor da bagagem, pagando uma taxa adicional. HAND LUGGAGE Each passenger on SATA Air Açores flights may carry one item of hand luggage. This should not exceed on SATA Air Açores and SATA Internacional the dimensions of 55cm x40cmx20cm and the maximum weight is of 6kg. In executive class (SATA Plus), hand luggage should not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, nor exceed 10 kg in weight. RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSSES AND DAMAGES TO LUGGAGE The liability for lost or damaged luggage is limited to 1.131 SDR, approximately 1.200 Euros (depending on the exchange rate). Aqueduto das Águas Livres
a
Mãe d’Água Velha, em Belas, marca o início da construção do Aqueduto das Águas Livres, obra integralmente financiada através de um imposto que recaiu sobre a população de Lisboa: o Real d’Água. Ergue-se junto dos vestígios do velho aqueduto de Olisipo, construção romana do século III, que abastecia de água a população de Queluz, testemunhando a importância já então atribuída às nascentes do Vale de Carenque. A Mãe d’Água Velha é um espaço emblemático. Uma construção abobadada onde o sol penetra através de uma clarabóia, acolhe a água que ali brota, conduzindo-a a partir dali até à cidade por um complexo sistema de galerias subterrâneas num total de 58km. O traço é de Manuel da Maia (1677-1768), autor do programa da obra, inicialmente pedida ao italiano Cannevari mas logo substituído. Prenuncia-se já aqui a expansão da cidade para ocidente, visão essa consagrada no projecto de reconstrução de Lisboa que
(THE ÁGUAS LIVRES AQUEDUCT): The construction of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, the most extraordinary public work of eighteenthcentury Lisbon, was implemented by King John V (1689-1750) at the peak of the Baroque period. At a time when the Italian school dominated the palatial and religious architecture, three Portuguese with a sound knowledge in engineering, architecture and urbanism, would for always be linked to this project: Manuel da Maia, Custódio Vieira and Carlos Mardel. The Mãe d’Água Velha marks the beginning of the construction of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, a work which was entirely financed through a tax on Lisbon’s inhabitants: the Real Água. The aqueduct is built near the vestiges of Olisipo’s old one, a Roman construction dating back to the 3rd century, which brought water to the population of Queluz, testifying the importance, already then, of the Vale Carenque springs. The Mãe d’Água Velha is an emblematic space. A vaulted building, where the sun penetrates through a skylight, it holds the water that springs there,

Enigmáticos jogos de luz e sombra, tão caros ao barroco, parecem configurar uma viagem iniciática que se prolonga por 58 quilómetros até ao Vale de Alcântara.
Manuel da Maia viria a implementar após o terramoto de 1755, a convite do Marquês de Pombal. Carlos Mardel (1695-1763) foi seu companheiro nesta viagem. Sê-lo-ia noutras também. É dele o projecto da Mãe d’Água Nova, perto da primeira, onde fez confluir o manancial de 54 outras nascentes que vieram engrossar o caudal da nascente velha. A obra prosseguiria a um ritmo invulgar sob a direcção de Custódio Vieira (1690-1744), empossado por ordem régia em 1736. Poucos anos mais tarde, estava já construída a polémica arcaria do Vale de Alcântara. O conjunto integra 35 arcos, 14 dos quais góticos, que atravessam uma área total de 914 metros. Criticada pela escola italiana, esta arcaria resistiria ao terramoto sem danos de maior, provando a justeza que presidiu aos seus cálculos. Em Outubro de 1744, a água chegava ao Chafariz das Amoreiras; e, quatro anos mais tarde, ao das Necessidades. Mardel, agora director vitalício da Casa das Águas Livres, fez construir nesse mesmo ano o Arco do Triunfo das Amoreiras e um D. João V, já muito doente, inaugurou oficialmente o Aqueduto. Morreria dois anos depois sem ver concluída a rede de distribuição. Mas vira a água chegar a Lisboa.
A SAGA DO AQUEDUTO é também marcada pelo conflito entre duas escolas de arquitectura antagónicas: uma, de influência italiana, que reúne figuras de relevo como Ludovice, o

arquitecto de Mafra e Cannevari, mais próximas do barroco europeu; outra, onde se destacam Manuel da Maia (que trabalhou também em Mafra), Carlos Mardel e Custódio Vieira (na

The project is Manuel da Maia’s (1677-1768), the author of the work’s program, initially to be handed the Italian Cannevari who was immediately substituted. With this construction Manuel da Maia foresaw the city’s expansion to the east, this became a fact after the 1755 earthquake when he was invited by the Marquis of Pombal to present a project for the reconstruction of Lisbon. Carlos Mardel embarked with him on this adventure. He would accompany him on others. The Mãe d’Água project is his; it is near the first one where he made the source of 54 other springs converge to swell the flow of the old water source. The work would proceed at an extraordinary pace under the direction of Custódio Vieira (16901744), appointed by royal order in 1736. A few years later, the controversial arcade of Vale de Alcântara had already been built. The arcade has 35 arches, 14 of which are in Gothic style, which cross an area which totals 914 meters. Criticized by the Italian school, this arcade would outlive the earthquake with no serious damage, thus proving how accurate the calculations used in its construction were. In October 1744, water arrived at the Amoreiras Fountain and, four years later to that of Necessidades. Mardel, now the lifelong director of Casa das Águas Livres, had the Amoreiras Triumph Arch built that same year, and an already very sick King John V officially inaugurated the Aqueduct. He’d die two years later, without seeing the distribution network completed. But he saw the water arrive to Lisbon.
The 58 kilometers to the Alcântara Valley seem to configure an initiatory journey enigmatically playing with light and shadow so dear to the Baroque.

h corsairo!”, ouço ainda a voz de meu pai, numa terna irritação, quando em criança me censurava por algum inesperado atrevimento, por ter cometido alguma maldade, por não ter feito o que me haviam mandado fazer – e, sobretudo, quando eu não parava quieto, sempre num vou ali e já venho. “Ah corsairo!”, dizia então meu pai, e diziam-no aos filhos os pais de todos aqueles que nasceram nas ilhas dos Açores e que do mar tudo esperavam – os ventos e os peganhos, as boas e as más notícias, as ajudas e os perigos, e, há muitas gerações atrás, os corsários da Argélia, responsáveis indirectos por alguns dos monumentos que recordam aos açorianos de hoje, pelas palavras de Nemésio, que a geografia, para nós, vale outro tanto como a história: tais monumentos podem ser feitos de pedra, como as humildes fortificações que ainda existem das muitas que durante

“AH, PIRATE!” Some day, tomorrow perhaps, it’ll be stormy. “We need to respect it”, the people say gazing the sea, “never turn your back to it”, they add, pointing their finger at it, in an islander’s ancestral fear, a fear that danger derives from nowhere else than the sea. “Ah pirate!” I can still hear my father’s voice, in a tender irritation when, as a child, he’d scold me for some unexpected insolence, for having been naughty, for not having done what I’d been told – and, mostly, when I wouldn’t be still, always fidgeting around. “Ah, pirate!” my father would say, and this was said by every parent of those children born in the Azores and who’d expect anything to come from the sea – the winds and the gales, the good and bad news, help and the dangers and, many generations before, the Algerian pirates, indirectly responsible for many of the monuments which remind today’s Azoreans, in the words of Nemésio, that geography for us is worth as much as history: such reminiscences can be made of stone, like the humble fortifications which still exist of the many which

Havia, pois, os corsários de antigamente: os turcos, os que vinham do mar e roubavam, cativavam e matavam as populações ilhoas, aqueles contra quem se ergueram fortalezas, e por mor dos quais se fizeram esconderijos dentro das casas. E havia os corsários da minha infância: os rapazes atrevidos, irrequietos, que à maneira dos turcos de antanho faziam das suas e que, bem vistas as coisas, até mereciam o nome que a nossa língua para eles ajeitou a partir da palavra que os romanos usavam para designar quem roubava com violência – rapace, como as aves rapinas. Ah, e havia também o corsário que não era ladrão dos mares como os turcos argelinos, nem rapaz aparentado pelo comportamento às aves de rapina – havia Vitorino Nemésio, poeta de Festa Redonda, livro de décimas e cantigas de terreiro por ele oferecidas ao povo da ilha Terceira, de onde era natural, mercê que a si chamou por mor das muitas viagens em que demandou as ilhas atlânticas e da fortuna que delas houve (e sobretudo houvemos nós) por meio de um livro que por memória destas viagens escreveu e a que ele próprio chamou Corsário das Ilhas. “Ah corsairo!”, dizem as vozes do povo apontando o mar depois da tormenta. “Ouçamos o que ele diz…”.

There had been the old days’ pirates: the Turks, those who came from the sea to plunder, they’d entice and kill the islanders, and they were the ones because of whom the fortifications were built and the hiding places were built inside the houses. And then there were the pirates of my childhood: the mischievous, skittish boys who, like the Turks of yore, would misbehave and did, in truth, deserve the name given to them in our language, which derives from the word the Romans used to refer to those who would steal using violence – rapace, as birds of prey. Ah, and there was also the pirate who was a not a sea thief as the Algerian Turks, nor a boy whose behavior resembled that of a bird of prey – Vitorino Nemésio, the poet of Festa Redonda, a book of décimas and cantigas de terreiro which he offered the people of Terceira island, the island he came from, and doing justice to his origins he traveled immensely and took off to explore the Atlantic islands and the fortune they’d bring him (and especially to us) due to a book he wrote recalling these travels and which he himself entitled Corsário das Ilhas (Island Pirate). “Ah pirate!” the people say pointing at the sea after the storm. “Let’s hear what it has to say…”
