Nemo Bar and Trellis

Transforming spaces into inspiring places Remember when all it took was a sheet draped over a table to make the perfect hideaway for you and a friend? What about those too-rare moments spent lying under the crisscrossing branches of a tree, letting your imagination wander? And there’s no denying the magnetic pull of the kitchen at every party—the way people gather to share stories, in a space that feels intimate and energized. In the spirit of that same connectivity, freedom, and inspiration, we’ve created the Nemo Bar and Trellis—tools for transforming informal spaces into places where people gather, share, and learn.

3

So, what does the socialization of work and learning look like? At izzy+, we’re excited about the ways work and learning are changing. More than anything, they’re becoming increasingly socialized, thanks to new technologies that are more mobile and collaborative than ever. But what does socialization look like, in real spaces? It looks a lot like everything we’ve always believed about people, design, and the future of work and learning—that people can be their best in spaces where flexibility, collaboration, technology, and inspiration converge. Designing the Nemo Bar and Trellis was like giving physical form to those ideals. The result? Inviting places where people want to be (which translates to places where sharing, thinking, and growing are sure to happen).

Create a room within a room—arrange Harter Forum Lounge seating and Work Tables under a three-sided Nemo Trellis.

Any place with people who need to regroup, meet, or recharge is a place for Nemo, from work and learning spaces to airports, hotel lobbies, and healthcare facilities. 5

Arc stools by Harter and a Dewey Connection Cart by Fixtures Furniture add extra dimensions of comfort and practicality to the Nemo Bar & Trellis.

“Being transparent about idea-sharing—especially in a very spontaneous setting rather than a controlled one—is an incredibly important part of the creative process.” — Company Founder and CEO Chuck Saylor

Design that dives into the future When izzy+ founder Chuck Saylor decided to create the Nemo project, he knew he wanted to give plenty of creative freedom to longtime izzy+ collaborator, Joey Ruiter. Opening up the design process to a broader conversation was also important. That’s why concept designs for the Nemo Bar and Trellis were brought to NeoCon in 2010 and 2011, where people could try them out.

“Something great happens when you get a chance to show concepts to the public,” Ruiter says. “If you take a design and make it into a product right away, it’s a lot harder to do something really new and innovative.” After absorbing two years’ worth of feedback, the polished versions of the Bar and Trellis were introduced at NeoCon 2012, where they earned a Best of NeoCon® Gold Award. In November 2012, Nemo Bar and Trellis was named an honoree for Interior Design Best of Year 2012, Contract/Desking and Systems category.

Not all spaces – or moments – are created equal 8

Some spaces are simply more flexible than others, which is a huge plus in this fast-paced, technological, ever-changing world. Some spaces are more inspiring, too—they impact how we think, feel, and interact. The Nemo Bar transforms any space into a hub of recharging-focusing-creating-collaborating goodness.

The HĂ…G Capisco Puls stool, with its human-centered saddle design, is perfect for sidling up to the Nemo Bar.

Bring people together and turn up the learning It must be a law of the universe: Where there are people connecting, there shall also be learning. We love that truth, so we’ve been excited to track how learning environments are becoming less tied to the classroom, and more interactive and social than ever. Encouraging collaboration and connection starts with creating a sense of place in an open space. With its architectural presence, the Nemo Trellis offers a hint of enclosure that draws people in, without shutting anyone out.

The Nemo Bar and Trellis take full advantage of izzy+ flavors™, our new colors and materials program. Create the look you’re after as well as the functionality you want, with writeable surfaces that encourage collaboration.

Take the one-sided Nemo Trellis and add some Harter Olivia seating and Shapes Tables to create mini-meetup zones.

Nemo: More than products—a way of thinking about the future. With the 2012 introduction of the Bar and Trellis, Nemo is now a line of products, but it’s also an ongoing project—a way of thinking and dialoguing around the future of work and learning. We hope you’ll join us on our quest to discover what’s next!
