WILL THE WOOLWORTH mANSION OFF FIFTH AVENUE AT 4 EAST 80TH STREET bE THE FIRST RENOVATED RESIDENCE TO SELL AT OVER $4,500 PER SqUARE FOOT? When a three-bedroom penthouse condominium at 15 Central Park West with 4,024 total square feet can sell in December 2010 for $40,000,000 or $9,940 per square foot, can the only renovated mansion of 20,000 square feet townhouse sell for $4,500 per square foot? The scarcity factor has helped Manhattan townhouses hold their value in varying market conditions. Some buyers feel they are “as good as gold.” Is it a very short leap to imagine a house with the ideal location of The Woolworth Mansion at 4 East 80th Street being worth $4,500 a square foot or more – easily reaching or surpassing its present asking price of $90,000,000?

Never before seen, these additional photos reveal a glimpse of the restored glory of 4 East 80th Street, the 20,000 square mansion, 35 feet wide just off Fifth Avenue, with a stunning limestone façade created by renowned townhouse architect, CPH Gilbert. Until these photos, the details of these newly photographed rooms have only been seen by qualified buyers. Not only is it renovated, but the original details created by CPH Gilbert have been painstakingly restored. While the other great mansions that have come on the market in New York have been shells requiring total renovation, this is the only mansion to be formally available that has been fully renovated in a traditional prewar style. Never before could one acquire such a magnificent building in this condition – truly a rare opportunity not to be missed. AVAILAbLE FOR RENT: $165,000/mONTH OR FOR SALE: $90,000,000 • WEb# 1207017

A WHOLE LOTTA ROCK & ROLL With a Rolling Stone for a dad and a former Norwegian model for a mom, Alexandra Richards was dealt a pretty solid hand. But this blond bombshell has paved her own way to “It” girl status (a title she finds quite amusing) as a sought-after model and DJ. letter from the president/publisher

Dear Readers, President/Publisher Julie Dannenberg

WELCOME TO OUR SEPTEMBER Fashion Issue. I am so proud of this new team of editors led by the fabulous Peter Davis. AVENUE has had a 36-year history of great editors, but there is something about this team that really shines. Case in point: our arresting cover and inside shots of Alexandra Richards, which came as a suggestion from one of our young editors, Jasmine Lombardi, and was exquisitely styled by our Creative Director, Cricket Burns. This story is followed by Eras of ‘It’ Girls, which chronicles five decades of Manhattan’s social circles. Not only is this a fun read, but also the art direction by Jessica Lee is outstanding. Thank you, Peter, for helping everyone around you shine. Another exciting venture here at AVENUE is www.avenueinsider.com. With it’s unique daily content, our website has taken New York by storm. If you are not getting our thrice-weekly e-blast, be sure to sign up on the site to receive these tantalizing little tid-bits—they’re the talk of the town. And now that the season is in full swing, please drop by the AVENUE Shows at the Park Avenue Armory. We will be there September 21-25 with a selection of more than 60 of the most prestigious dealers worldwide. Whether you fancy mid-century furniture, estate jewelry or fine art, this is the must-see show of the year. In addition, we have the most exciting show programs with lectures from well-known designers and worldrenowned dealers. Please visit www.avenueshows.com for details. We are preparing for our busiest and most exciting fall ever—I know what’s in store for the remainder of the year, and I can tell you that each issue is a jewel. So sit back and take a small vacation from the chaos of Fashion Week, getting the kids off to school and the piles of papers on your desk by reading the magazine, going to our site and attending our show. I promise, you will have a blast . . . Julie Dannenberg

letter from the editor

Dear Readers,

16 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

Editor Peter Davis

Have fun meeting the new stars of Spin City and gobbling up the scandals from the past 50 years of society’s boldface beauties. I’ll see you next month, hopefully with a diploma in my hand from the best DJ academy in New York. Until then, pump up the volume and dance, dance, dance!

Editor For more of our September issue, visit www.avenueinsider.com

JUAN ALGARIN

ONE EVENING AT A very fancy black tie party, over the expertly coiffed heads of Anna Wintour, Kate Winslet and Courtney Love, I spotted my friend Alexandra Richards (yes, Keith’s daughter) with white headphones and stacks of equipment spinning tunes for the tony crowd and looking as beautiful, chic and cool as humanly possible. I raced over to say hi and immediately asked Alex if she would be on the September cover of AVENUE. Alex is beautiful and talented—jetting all over the globe to DJ and model—not to mention candid and funny, revealing to writer Carson Griffith that her famous Rolling Stone father hasn’t seen her Playboy pictorial and that she hasn’t read his juicy, best-selling autobiography Life yet. She is actually in the middle of poet/rocker Patti Smith’s memoir Just Kids. After booking Alex as our cover girl, it dawned on us that turntables are the new handbags: meaning that the new crop of young “It” girls aren’t designing patent leather evening clutches, but rather mixing music for everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Chelsea Clinton. For this issue, we gathered all the darlings of the DJ set at The Plaza Hotel with their equipment (Becka Diamond even brought a portable turntable). Photographer Juan Algarin shot them in haute-fashion as they all gossiped about working in nightclubs from Los Angeles to London, fashion shows and their latest jet-set gigs. These girls are always on a plane! Needless to say, I walked home after a full-day shoot and immediately Googled DJ lessons. Editor/DJ has a nice ring to it. Cue the disco anthem “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.” While we were busy shooting our DJ dolls, we rememinisced about the decades of society girls that have dominated Manhattan—and the scandals that each clique seems to be defined by—from “poor little rich girl” Edie Sedgwick to Olivia Palermo (who went from being the target of the snarky website Socialite Rank to laughing all the way to stardom on MTV’s The City). And stay tuned: Olivia has piles of projects in the pipeline. Meanwhile, I profiled Olivia years ago for AVENUE when she first arrived in New York. We met on the stairs of The Museum of Natural History after a charity benefit because Olivia is such a stylish, beautiful girl that I just had to march up to her to tell her what a knockout she is. She has been a friend ever since—and now, an international style star. We sure know how to pick our “It” girls at AVENUE. . . And since September is all about fashion in New York, we sent writer Martin Marks to the offices of The Council of Fashion Designers of America to meet the new CEO of the CFDA: the likeable, regular guy Steven Kolb (who describes himself on Twitter as an “accidental fashion drone”). Kolb is far from a “drone” and his insights into the inner sanctum that is Seventh Avenue are fascinating.

"It was so exciting to walk in as an intern and be a part of such an amazing shoot. It's not every day you get to walk in to The Plaza Hotel, be surrounded by such fantastic designer pieces and outfit such talented women—all at the same time,” says Amy Smith, the fashion assistant on this month’s wow-factor cover shoot. A first-time contributor for AVENUE in the August issue, a lot has changed since the days when Smith was gathering friends to put together photo shoots in the back alleys of Toronto. Previously an editor of a Montreal-based online magazine and working as a freelance writer and stylist in her hometown of Toronto, Amy moved to the Big Apple only three months ago to intern at AVENUE.

As senior columnist for the New York Daily News’ Gatecrasher column, Carson Griffith has interviewed everyone from James Franco to Jane Lynch, and Anna Wintour to Oprah, covering premieres and parties from coast to coast. The West Village resident also contributes regularly to television and radio as an entertainment expert. For this issue of AVENUE, Griffith interviewed the gorgeous and talented Alexandra Richards at the Royal Plaza Suite. “Alexandra put a new spin on down-to-earth. She was so nonchalant about her chicness.”

Bill Westmoreland's career in hair and makeup styling spans three decades. He has collaborated with such legendary photographers as Frank Ockenfels, Francesco Scavullo, Annie Leibovitz and Richard Avedon. Westmoreland's styling has appeared in the top magazines as well as in campaigns and online sites for retail giants including Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Giorgio Armani and Michael Kors. He has worked with many celebrities for various photo projects, videos and live performances, such as David Bowie, Patti Smith and James Taylor—so styling New York’s hottest female DJs was second nature. “Working with the DJs for the September issue was a great collaborative effort—so much individual style and talent—and each has made their own specific mark in today’s music scene.” For his makeup and hairstyling, Westmoreland is represented by Art + Commerce in New York City.

petrified in our icebox. “Hello Mila, you met my daughter,” I spewed before her handler could shake me. Her face lit up, and she said, “Oh . . . she was the best mannered, sweetest girl. I loved her!” Boy, do we love you back. Other worthy co-stars included Richard Jenkins, Patricia Clarkson—who said, “I walked in on Justin Timberlake nude. God, I love my job!”—Jenna Elfman, Shaun White, Emma Stone, Bryan Greenberg, and director and producer Will Gluck. Other stars in their own right included: Michael Bolton (cool again via Saturday Night Live), Kirsten Dunst, Liv Tyler, Mayor Cory Booker, Terry Richardson, Rose Byrne and Joyce DeWitt—a face from the past who created a photo frenzy. I think we should tell some folks we know that staying out of the cameras for a few decades is commendable. And lastly, the only good news about 100 degree heat is that it makes Coty and Bottega Veneta’s new women’s fragrance more intense, and maybe more necessary. Tomas Maier, Bottega’s creative director, debuted the almost embarrassingly sensual fragrance at the Academy Mansion (of Woolworth provenance, now Len Blavatnik’s, though he just rents it out). Paneled rooms opened onto the flora filled courtyard, designed by Raul Avila, and chic revelers with wrists and earlobes awaiting the grace of this seductive fragrance included Marina Rust, Derek Blasberg, Margaret Russell, Coco Brandolini, Robbie Myers, Linda Wells, Simon Doonan and Jessica Chastain, who said she’d spray it on her sheets. Sweet dreams. ✦

here can one find a musical steamroller, latex-clad pregnant clowns in acrobatic swings, seductive glittered nude dames and Rufus Wainwright? In Water Mill, naturally—where else? No, I’m not talking about a hallucinatory afternoon in Montauk induced by mind-bending drugs out of a 1970s tour bus, but rather, the next best thing. It’s no secret for the seasoned Hampton habitué that the Watermill Center annual benefit is the hottest ticket of the summer season, so needless to say, year-after-year I happily take the leap down to see what marvels legendary avant-garde artist Robert Wilson (who is turning 70 this year) has cooked for us with his minions of vanguard artists in residency. Founded by Wilson in 1992, the Watermill Center in Long Island brings together a unique and certainly eclectic community of artists and scholars to collaborate on new artistic and theatrical forms. Since 2006, the center has been a year-round laboratory for performance welcoming more than 150 artists from around the world. The year’s worth of work all boils down to one memorable summer afternoon of excitingly strange and immersive art. This year’s theme: Voluptuous Panic. I arrive at the center around 7 p.m. to a roadside check-in overcrowded with familiar faces—weekend imports. I am handed my table number and welcomed into the heart of darkness by servers with Gaga-esque mirrored eye masks and equally shiny silver trays offering a selection of blood-red cocktails. Down the winding path I encounter a devilish creature, deformed with an impossibly large chest and a disfigured face—a creation of artist Charlie le Mindu and appropriately baptized Milk the Cow. The guests can’t resist and smart phones are pulled out as they climb the mirrored steps created by Jakob Oredsson towards the main hall. At the main patio, an enormous yellow steamroller outfitted with a musical back-wheel (think oversized music box) circles five naked, siren-like women covered in silver and glitter in a seemingly eternal cycle. Watching the unusual sight is writer and contemporary chair Darrell Hartman who aptly describes the bizarre show as “Terminator 2 meets Demoiselles d’Avignon!” My empty glass demands a refill, and on my way to the bar I run into fashion designer Zaldy who recently traded New York for Montreal. “This is really unlike any benefit,” he shares between sips of Pinot, “the Foundation is based on performance art so the evening is quite eccentric! It's not like going to the Ballet or the Opera gala where you know what to expect. Here, you never know what brilliance Bob and his selected residents have devised.” A word of warning or an astute observation? In the white tent holding the 90 silent auction lots, I spot Fabiola Beracasa admiring a colorful Cindy Sherman photograph and Lisa Anastos checking out the silk-screened Kenny Scharf donut print. The Center is unparalleled with not only the sheer number of items offered but the caliber

of its pieces—an unmatchable feat this far along the East End. A true hodgepodge of emerging and established artists are on display and virtually every single bidding sheet is penciled in before dinner. Stephanie LaCava, in a minimalist white Bottega jacket is stunned by the colorful etching of Tauba Auerbach and urges me to explore the back woods. Exiting the tiki-torched pathway as I start my round is Voguette Chloe Malle who recently joined the Watermill committee as a contemporary chair. Her eyes are wide with excitement, as she tells me “There is nothing like the Watermill benefit, forget in the Hamptons—anywhere! The entire property pulses with a creative energy and zeal that you wish could be bottled. The performances and art installations are so unique because they exist only in this space at this one moment.” One of the most widely celebrated pieces this evening is the comically sadistic II, a performance art installation by Ryan McNamara—the young artist and Sam Roeck are buried underground save, for their singing heads whimpering such

pearls as “I Got You Babe” and “Islands in the Stream.” The crowd goes wild in a mixture of concern and giddy laughter. On my way through the artsy playground I run into the man behind it all and Director of the Center, Jörn Weisbrodt, who tells me “I think what makes our benefit different is that it is really much more than a benefit. It is more like a festival of the arts condensed into one evening. People know that when they come to us, they will always be surprised. It is like entering into a new and strange world.” Euan Rellie, dapper man-about-town, is clad in Marks & Spencer pajama bottoms and a pink Brooks Brothers jacket for the evening. Rellie has been attending the benefit on-and-off for the past ten years and is always amused by it all. His favorite part? “The art installations, which range from deeply moving and brilliant, to utterly ridiculous and funny. ” Dinner is served underneath a tent on the western gravel terrace—it will soon be the site of the new underground space housing a black box rehearsal room and a gallery for the estate of Paul Thek. Simon de Pury, auctioneer extraordinaire, takes the stage with a fast-paced bidding battle for the 12 live auction lots. Most impressive of the group are a gelatin print self-portrait by Marina Abramovic and a massive etching on rag paper by Julian Schnabel. Roger Waters, the Pink Floyd bassist, outbids Jay McInerney—who later advises me never to bid against friends. As the auction winds down and irresistible sugary treats like limoncello-soaked almond cakes and strawberry meringue tarts are passed, DJ Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem notoriety takes reign of the deck turning out tunes that kept the likes of Arden Wohl, Dalia Oberlander and Brooke Geahan on the dance floor. The next morning I’m happy to learn that the evening had raised nearly $1.5 million for the center—an extraordinary achievement for an organization that plays to the beat of its on drums and a lucky one for adventurous party goers who crave a yearly leap into the creative rabbit hole of Robert Wilson’s fantastical world. ✦

MADE FOR WALKIN' Rain gear, by name alone, sounds inherently functional and purely protective. Think galoshes, wind-breakers, waders or even—gasp!—those clear plastic head scarves as sported by the over-80 set who ride the M4 up and down Madison Avenue when the weather is inclement. Conventional wet weather wear has been blown out of the water by these super slick wellies designed by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. Mr. Ahead-of-the-Curve (remember when he introduced us to grunge-chic in the 90s?) has miraculously molded the shiniest of claret rubber into this stacked-heel, to-the-knee, knockout boot. Surely they will be this season's get-on-the-waiting-list obsession. Pray for rain!

riginally serving as a residence for wealthy New Yorkers, The Plaza Hotel is the only New York City hotel to have been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The first Plaza Hotel opened its doors in 1890, only to be demolished 15 years later to make room for the new 19-story building that stands today. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the man who was also behind the Dakota apartments, designed the $12.5 million edifice. No expense was spared for the French Renaissance-style chateau with a total of 1,650 crystal chandeliers purchased and a record setting order of gold-encrusted china. 98 years later, its current owners, El-Ad Properties funded a three-year, $400 million floor-to-ceiling renovation, returning this iconic New York building to all of its original glory, and then some. Ever since Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt were the first guests to sign the register, The Plaza has served as a luxurious pied-à-terre for everyone from Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald to the Beatles.✦

U

nlike hundreds of thousands of Rolling Stones fans, DJ/model Alexandra Richards has yet to read her father’s best-selling autobiography, Life. “I’m actually in the middle of Patti Smith’s memoir Just Kids, but maybe after that, I’ll read dad’s,” Richards remarks casually while slipping out of a strapless gown and letting it tumble to the ground in the cavernous Royal Plaza Suite in The Plaza Hotel on a sunny day in August. Keith—aka one of the greatest guitarists of all time—would rather have his deejaying daughter be in a band than play other people’s music, Richards reports, but only because “making a job out of it is kind of bizarre to him.” The Wilhelmina model does play guitar in her alone time, she just won’t play in front of her father. “It’s still a little too intimidating,” Richards admits.“He’s kind of funny about it because it’s such a different generation of music,” she explains, “but he’s very proud of me.” As he should be. In just about four years, Richards has skyrocketed to one of the most high-profile female deejays in New York City and beyond, taking her small-time gig at Bella’s (the now-closed bar in Little Italy) and expanding it into a full-blown international career. In the past year alone, Richards has travelled to Russia and Shanghai, and in March, she did “a little tour of nightclubs” in Norway, Finland and Sweden. Add St. Tropez to that résumé, and upcoming gigs in Paris and Australia, and you would think she’s been constantly living out of a suitcase. While she admits traveling doesn’t let her see her family as much as she’d like, “Deejaying isn’t as lonely as modeling,” Richards says, as she wraps her long limbs beneath her like a ballerina and perches beneath a window in the suite’s wood-paneled drawing room. It’s hard to imagine Richards ever being lonely. For one thing, the blue-eyed beauty is in a long-term relationship with fellow DJ Nick Cohen. Although Richards says he “doesn’t like to take credit,” she cites him as the inspiration behind her first set of turntables. Cohen, a devilishly handsome native New Yorker, echoes Richards’ sentiments. “I don’t like to take credit for other people’s accomplishments,” he says modestly, but he proudly shares that his girlfriend has been “incredibly successful learning the skill and developing her own sound.” Very successful, indeed. While Cohen, who also co-founded Upper Echelon Shoes, says the couple has similar taste in music, he prefers his girlfriend’s, and tries to be a “good work

“It’s kind of funny being called an ‘It’ girl of New York, because I’m so far from that. When I first moved to the city, I was like ‘Oh my God!’ This is such a different world.” —Alexandra Richards

partner” when the two are booked for joint gigs. “I couldn’t think of a better person to stand next to than Alexandra.” It’s not just her superb musical skills that have made their relationship last for the better half of a decade—“Alexandra has the largest heart of anyone I’ve had the pleasure of being around,” Cohen says. In the span of three complicated designer outfit changes, Richards mentions her family—mom, dad, and older sister Theodora—and her home life a litany of times. “You know, I actually grew up in Connecticut, but a lot of people think I’m from New York,” she points out. Her family has mainly resided in the quaint town of Weston, Connecticut for more than 20 years. “It’s kind of funny being called an ‘It’ girl of New York, because I’m so far from that. When I first moved to the city [at age 17], I was like ‘Oh my God!’ This is such a different world.” Richards also laughs at the coveted “party girl” title, and she’s found ways around the perils of its endowment. “There’s two ways you can go about it: You can be in touch with the [New York] Post after you go out at night, or you don’t,” she says firmly, as a hairstylist who announced he also worked on her mother in the 80s twirls a lock of her blond hair. The youngest Richards daughter’s nighttime activities don’t sound like they make for particularly good tabloid fodder, anyway. “I’m not a night-clubber,” she insists, adding that her Wednesday night residency at Le Bain with fellow DJ Paul Sevigny (actress Chloë Sevigny’s older brother) is plenty. Instead, the self-proclaimed “jeans and T-shirt girl” prefers dive bars, like Toad’s Place on Wooster Street in Connecticut. “If there’s a pool table and a bar and TV, I’m pretty settled.” However, Richards’ famous last name mustn’t be discounted. Aside from a wordless cameo on a 2009 episode of Gossip Girl where she got to seductively wink at Ed Westwick (which she describes as “kind of whacky but great”), and assistance with a recently-debuted handbag line headed by her mother, last summer, the fresh-faced blond found herself on the pages of French Playboy. Despite her bombshell looks and body, Richards’ warm, open demeanor is more girl-next-door than Hef ’s Girls Next Door. “I think that’s what the photographer was trying to capture, it wasn’t supposed to be raunchy,” she says of her Playboy pictorial. The series of shots include Richards in tennis shoes and sunglasses. She claims it was “kind of an honor and kind of a laugh,” especially because her mother had previously done Playboy, “God knows when.” “I still don’t think I’ve showed my dad the [Playboy] photos,” Richards admits with a mischievous smile, although she says it’s a “conversation in the air” between herself and the Rolling Stone. But not every opportunity looks like a good one to the golden-haired darling of the DJ set. Reality shows have often been offered to the model and her equally gorgeous 26-year-old sister, but Richards has politely declined. “I’m just not comfortable having a camera following me around,” she says. “Some people can handle it and it’s pretty impressive but…,” she pauses and shrugs. “I’m not shy, I’m just private.” ✦

Leyland’s career started with a gig for Fashion’s Night Out for Valentino last September and has culminated most recently with a summer residency at Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer’s in Montauk (the latter hotel is co-owned by her boyfriend, Ben Pundole), and a spot this fall in a Dove-sponsored MTV documentary. The doc will feature three female DJs in total, with the leggy Leyland as “the fashionable DJ,” where cameras will be trailing her throughout Fashion Week. Despite being relatively new to the game, her already-impressive résumé warrants these wise words for the next fleet of female fixtures on the turn-tables: “A lot of times it’s easy to just play what people want you to play,” the reggae and English-punk-spinning Leyland advises, “but it’s very important to develop your own style.”

Hannah Bronfman Hannah Bronfman has been a busy girl since AVENUE dubbed her “Girl of the Year” in January. Although Bronfman says she’s not at liberty to elaborate on details, the part-owner of Hotel Griffou is currently investing in a new restaurant and a nightclub as well. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the 23-year-old Bard graduate has music running through her veins: Bronfman is the daughter of the CEO of Warner Music Group, Edgar Bronfman, Jr., sister-in-law-to-be to singer M.I.A, and owns a record label (and an eco-friendly clothing line called Green Owl) with her brother, Benjamin. “I’m always spreading the love and keeping it in the family,” Bronfman, who has been dating musician Asher Roth for the past two years, says regarding her deejaying philosophy. But for Hannah, it’s also about “bringing a crowd as opposed to just spinning the best music.”

Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe know how to keep a secret. The DJ duo—Moretti spins while Moe plays the electric violin—was one of the best kept secrets of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding last summer. “We didn’t even tell our mothers!” Moretti laughs, revealing how they kept their lips sealed before the big day (the iron-clad confidentiality contracts the pair had to sign probably helped, too). “Bill and Hillary were standing on the dance floor with their arms around each other, just kind of watching while we played,” Moretti says. But that was just the beginning for this well-known team: In early July, the ladies opened up for Janet Jackson at the Louvre in Paris, and they are now gearing up for New York Fashion Week—one of their busiest times of the year. “It’s not just a man’s game anymore,” Moretti proudly says of the recent success for females on the turntables. “It’s an everybody’s game.”

Becka Diamond

Becka Diamond Becka Diamond’s ‘It’ girl status is as solid as the music she plays. If you haven’t seen the tatted-up DJ doll at work at some of her usual spots (Soho Grand and Westway), expect to hear the sweet-voiced blond spin everything from French band M83 to Lady Gaga to Hole. Diamond, who sports a tattoo of—what else—a diamond, on her wrist, calls Hole singer Courtney Love a friend and a “good girl.” But that’s no surprise from this Fashion Week front-row staple, party host and occasional model. Diamond says her most memorable deejaying gig was last New Year’s Eve at the now defunct Don Hill’s, playing with her pal Greg Krelenstein of the DJ trio the MisShapes. “I really miss that place,” Diamond, who is lauded for her punk style as much as her playlists, admits forlornly. “Don Hill [who died this year] loved music, not a lot of club-owners seem to. It wasn’t just about the models.” Opposite page: Becka Diamond wearing a fur and black crystal top by Fendi at Saks Fifth Avenue and leather skinny pants by MaxMara. Chrissie Miller has an addiction. But before you hand the designer of the fashion label Sophomore a pamphlet for Promises Recovery Center, hear her out: “I don’t make a lot of money from my company so I started deejaying and I kind of got addicted to it,” she confesses. “It’s a high.” Miller, who started her casualcool clothing company in 2003 (but didn’t get serious about it until 2008), has the current residency in the Club Room of the Soho Grand on Saturdays. Miller’s boyfriend happens to have the same profession as her part-time occupation. “He plays totally different things than I do,” says Miller about Leo Fitzpatrick, her actor/artist beau, adding that he doesn’t even like when she goes to see his gigs. And while Miller says she’ll always see herself as a designer first and a DJ second, it doesn’t sound like she’s leaving the turntables anytime soon. “It’s the closest thing I’ll ever be to a performer,” she concludes. “It’s the best feeling in the world.” ✦

At the height of his popularity in the fall of 1966, Truman Capote threw the Black and White Ball in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel with a guest list that took months to master. The party united and divided the high society of politics, show-business and wealth. Later, excerpts of his much-touted, work-in-progress, Answered Prayers, were thought to reveal the gossipy confidences of many of Manhattan’s elite. Capote’s Swans—the glamorous “ladies who lunched” (most often at La Grenouille)—famously dropped Capote as a friend. At the forefront of this exile were Babe Paley and Slim Keith, who recognized that the thinly veiled characters were based on them. Most of the Swans would never socialize with Capote (who became an alcoholic) ever again.

Edie: Warhol’s Wayward Waif Edie Sedgwick went from a blue blood beauty to a bleach-blond/silver Warhol superstar when she moved to Manhattan, lived in the Chelsea Hotel and became Warhol’s muse in-residence at his silverpainted Factory. A favorite of Vogue’s Diana Vreeland, Sedgwick’s signature style of long dangling earrings, striped sailor shirts and tights made her an instant fashion icon invited to every party in town. She dated Bob Dylan who wrote “Just Like a Woman” about her. But Sedgwick’s taste for hard drugs (heroin, speed, cocaine) eventually led to her demise. After ditching New York (insiders say Warhol grew tired of her) for California, Sedgwick married in 1971 but sadly died from an overdose of barbiturates that same year. Despite her short life (she was 28 when she OD-ed), Sedgwick’s style lives on in George Plimpton’s verbal history Edie.

Helen Lee Schifter: The Affair to Remember

Whitney Fairchild

Former Vogue writer and party-circuit-staple, Helen Lee Schifter is always in the fashion glossies and society columns. She recently landed in Page Six, where it was reported in detail that Schifter—who is married to Le Sportsac CEO Tim Schifter—had been having an affair with artist Brice Marden—who has been married to Helen Marden for 43 years. At first, Lee Schifter said she was simply Marden’s “muse,” but later Marden copped to the romance. Everything exploded when Helen Marden marched over to Lee Schifter at Bar Pitti and yelled: “Are you the _____ who has been _____ my husband?” Patrons of the restaurant (where the Mardens are regulars) broke out into loud applauses. Ouch!

Alice Larkin: Banned from the Sorority of Silver Spooners With the help of publicist Lara Shriftman, British transplant Alice Larkin skyrocketed to socialite stardom after being discovered working at a store on the Upper East Side. Instantly, Larkin was in attendance at all of the right parties and seen with everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio to Kate Moss. But Larkin's plummet came just as quickly as her rise when she made the mistake of striking up an affair with Adam Cahan, the husband of Samantha Kluge. Within minutes of the gossip making its way through the Upper East Side, Larkin was permanently 86-ed from the scene and Shriftman pointedly shunned her from all future events. Larkin learned a valuable lesson: be careful who you mess with on the big, bad sidewalks of Park Avenue. But for Larkin, things turned out okay—she is now married to Cahan, living in San Francisco with their children.

Forget the Rupert Murdoch phone-tapping scandal, the first famous hacker is former Dolce & Gabbana PR Director Ali Wise. She pled guilty to a felony charge of eavesdropping and computer trespassing admitting that she listened in on the messages of interior designer Nina Freudenberger (with whom she shared an ex-boyfriend, John Deutsch, the CEO of Downtown records). Prosecutors alleged that Wise hacked Freudenberger’s phone 337 times. She was given 300 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine. Naturally, blond and beautiful, New York-bred Wise showed up to court decked out in designer duds and big black shades, giving photographers exactly what they wanted.

Tinsley Mortimer: Reality TV Train Wreck Once the reigning queen of New York socialites in the new century, Tinsley Mortimer took quite a fall from grace when her reality show High Society crashed and burned almost as soon as it started—getting the worst ratings of any show in the history of the CW Network. Chronicling her life after her very public split from high-school sweetheart and beau of 17 years, Topper Mortimer, the show left New York cringing, deeming it low-brow, vulgar and embarrassing. Not to mention that her ex-husband and in-laws were horrified with her actions. Meanwhile Tinsley’s mother Dale Mercer’s Facebook page describes her as “Break-out star of High Society” and “HOT.” 72 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

f fashion is about appearance, then the calm, soft-spoken man who commands a central role in what could be called the nexus of the style monde seems in contrast with the fast-paced, frenzied fashion industry. “When I first started, Stan Herman liked to joke that I knew nothing about fashion,” says Steven Kolb, the bespectacled ringmaster of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, who has been described, almost universally, as being the nicest guy in the industry. “To some extent that might be true, but one of the great perks of my job has been getting to meet and work with designers, and getting to see what they do and how they create,” admits Kolb, who spent several years as the Executive Director of the CFDA and was recently named the organization’s CEO—a major promotion. “It’s a nice validation, and another tool to do what we do on a day-to-day basis,” says Kolb. With the colorful quilt of postcards, pictures and notes tacked up behind his desk serving as a backdrop, and an almost bookish sense of glee, Kolb explains the CFDA’s mission: “As an organization, we’re actually two in one, a 501(c)(6) trade organization and a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.” But these indecipherable tax codes don’t do the CFDA justice. As a charity, they’ve raised nearly $50 million for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and $30 million for the New York City AIDS Fund. As a trade organization, CFDA’s roster encompasses a who’s who of American fashion. It is an authority and a voice for its inventory of more than 400 members, presenting American designers to the public, and the public to American designers. Moreover, it is also a community, with a series of funds, initiatives, awards, scholarships, development programs and strategic partnerships meant to foster creative talent—both established by MARTIN MARKS and emerging. photographed by SOPHIE ELGORT Indeed, one of Kolb’s latest tasks has been overseeing the CFDA’s incoming freshmen class of 33 designers—the largest in CFDA history. One of those new members, Fenton/Fallon jewelry designer Dana Lorenz, recalls first approaching Kolb about becoming more involved with the CFDA. “When I was younger, I’d read about fashion, and think that these were some really powerful people,” remembers Lorenz. “For someone who is one of the most important people in our industry, Steven’s remarkably down to earth, and he really is someone I can reach out and talk to.” Growing up in New Jersey in the 1970s, Kolb’s world was just about as far removed from the Seventh Avenue to Madison Avenue stretch—or the lunches with Ralph and emails from DVF—as one could be, even though his family lived just 45 minutes outside of Manhattan. He recalls his first trip into the city, for his sister’s birthday: “We came to see the Harlem Globetrotters at Madison Square Garden, and then went down to Chinatown for Chinese food. I remember being on the subway thinking we stuck out as being very suburban,” he says. “It was one of the few times we came into New York as a family.” When you imagine Kolb’s first fashionable moment, you half expect to hear musings on Halston, or a mid-1980s pair of Fiorucci jeans. But Kolb’s answer is decidedly appropriate for a man who, on both Twitter and Tumblr,

has described himself as an “accidental fashion drone.” “In the fourth grade, I remember that I had an orange turtleneck with tan panels on it,” Kolb says with a laugh. “It’s true! I’m not making it up! I even remember my teacher commenting on it!” The idea of working for fashion never really seemed to be on Kolb’s radar. As a communications major who eventually earned a master’s degree in public administration from New York University, Kolb became involved with the non-profit sector at an early age, as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer and at a crisis intervention hotline. When he graduated from college, his path in non-profits seemed to have already been paved. For many years, he worked for the American Cancer Society of New Jersey because “HIV and AIDS was pretty brutal at that time,” he says. “I felt that I could take what I was doing and apply it to something more personal.” This led to a 15-year stint at the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, which, through its outreach, changed the direction of how people in the city were responding to the epidemic. A friend at MTV who was the Executive Director of LIFEbeat—a music organization dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS—was looking for someone to head up an organization that would create marketing campaigns to raise awareness of the disease. Thus began Kolb’s work with the Staying Alive Foundation and the start-up tasks of filing all the paperwork, creating a charter, putting together a board and setting up a grant process. At the time, Kolb had never set foot in a Fashion Week tent. Therefore, it would seem unlikely that the search committee looking to fill CFDA’s Executive Director position would make a call to Kolb. But while he was at DIFFA, he had worked with CFDA’s Lisa Smilor; Smilor remembered him, and suggested that the search committee get in touch with Kolb about the position. Around the interview table sat Diane von Furstenberg, Stan Herman and Geoffrey Banks, among others. Though most would be daunted by these fashion heavyweights, Kolb recalls it being a relaxed conversation, with von Furstenberg asking the last question: “What’s your sign?” Kolb answered (Libra), and, for reasons falling outside the realm of the zodiac, he got the job. “I think it was because I wasn’t coming from a pure fashion background,” he reasons. These days, Kolb seems to be far removed from the orange-turtleneckwith-tan-panels. He defines his style as being “disheveled American, because I’m always wearing an American designer and there’s always something just a little messy, whether it’s my hair, or my shirt.” Sitting at his desk, Kolb is true to the definition of his style, dressed from head-to-toe in CFDA designers: a handsome navy suit by Andrew Buckler; a Band of Outsiders tie; a blue J.Crew shirt, its sleeves punctuated with Michael Spirito cufflinks; eyewear by Salima Salaun (“When I started wearing glasses, she kind of intervened with an upgrade,” Kolb confesses.); and shoes by L.A.-based cobbler George Esquivel. “People look at fashion and think it’s all about appearance,” says Kolb. “But there’s a depth to fashion that goes beyond how someone looks, that goes beyond appearance or style. Real style is about the giving, and the connection to issues that are important to us as individuals. There really is a heart to fashion.” ✦

“For someone who’s one of the most important people in our industry, Steven’s remarkably down to earth.” —Dana Lorenz

renowned photographer, Oberto Gili has made a name for himself chronicling spaces as a testament to personal style and taste— pointing out in his preface that his photographs are not about the “trendy or untrendy, modern or passé, rich or poor, famous or unknown.” To him, décor expresses not only individual personality, but culture and history as well. Published by Rizzoli New York, Home Sweet Home gives readers a peek inside the 40 or so homes that have touched upon his own sensibilities and influenced his taste and thinking. This collection of Gili’s best work leaves readers with the impression of touring a museum—each page overflowing with inspiring lavishness. Author and design connoisseur Susanna Salk offers her input with a short description of each space. A few of the homeowners themselves—Isabella Rossellini, Muriel Brandolini, Paul Fortune, among others—also share their personal history of the space they live in.

Custom F Catering Great Performances excels at any event, large or small, uptown or downtown

84 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

ounded by Liz Neumark in 1979, Great Performances has become the premier catering company in New York City. Great Performances is the exclusive caterer for landmark institutions like The Plaza Hotel, Wave Hill and Sotheby’s, and has hosted events for prestigious organizations such as the Clinton Global Initiative, Time 100, City Parks Foundation, and the Rainforest Alliance. While Great Performances is known for executing larger events, the caterer ’s approach also lends itself well to smaller venues—such as your home. It is at intimate gatherings in private homes, or at special events like weddings, anniversaries and holiday parties, that the company shines in an exceptional way. Local and seasonal ingredients are always favored in every menu, particularly Great Performances’ 100 Mile Menu, sourced with ingredients within a 100-mile radius of New York City, including Katchkie Farm, the caterer’s own 60-acre organic farm upstate. Great Performances’ Executive Chef Robb Garceau is intimately involved in writing seasonal menus, often based on what is ready for harvest that very week.

“Our best compliment,” says Chef Garceau, “is when the guests don’t even realize a caterer was in the kitchen. Though the food is restaurant quality, it is prepared with home-infused authenticity.” “We can take any focal point in a home as inspiration for the overall look of a party,” says Josh Tierney, Co-Director of Style and Design at Great Performances. “This ensures the event works with the look of the home rather than against it.” This customization extends to the service aspect of the event, such as Great Performances’ unique, personalized trays, which present hors d’oeuvres on elevated discs, or cradle mini cupcakes on red peppercorns. The unique designs make them both versatile and classic, matching any space from a loft in Soho to a West Village brownstone. Great Performances is known for its innovative catering practices, like updating popular comfort foods, and presenting them with a twist. For example, a rooftop cocktail hour could feature a soda jerk station, the caterer’s new take on the traditional version, with seasonally flavored artisanal syrups like strawberry-rhubarb, peach and cherry. For greater flexibility in outdoor entertainment, Great Performances’ recently-launched Katchkie Truck is available to cater parties at your location, offering local fare centered on Katchkie Farm produce. Whether it’s giving new meaning to a company picnic, or a creative spin on a wedding reception, Great Performances’ truck is ready to roll. Behind all the culinary expertise Great Performances has to offer, the company’s hands-on staff and commitment to service guarantees that your event will run smoothly, with grace and style. ✦

Angelo Donghia’s Townhouse

The Donghia Doctrine Recognized as one of the most innovative interior design firms, Donghia Associates follows in the footsteps of its legendary founder

S

ince the early 70s, the name Donghia has been synonymous with innovation and quality design. Looking back at the life of this celebrated leader of the interiors industry, it is no wonder why Donghia has continued to prosper years after the death of its founder. Angelo Donghia’s career launched when he joined Yale Burge Interiors in New York City in 1959, and quickly worked his way up to become partner of the renamed Burge-Donghia firm. Donghia’s first triumph in the design world took place in 1966, when he was asked to design the Opera Club—a private men’s club at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center. With its silver foil ceilings, blue glass chandeliers and black upholstery, the club’s bar and restaurant garnered much attention on the opening night of the Opera, where several attendees hired Angelo on the spot to design their own apartments. As one of the first to realize the importance of extending a creative brand to mass-market products, Angelo’s success also grew to new heights once he lent his name to various 86 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

His business continued to expand in 1968 with the standards with a style defined by simple lines, bold forms, sensuous establishment of &Vice Versa (later renamed Donghia Textiles), a shapes and textures, all while using only the purest of materials. Reviving to-the-trade collection and showroom of fabrics and wall coverings. some of Angelo’s classic works such as the Volume Sofa, Madison Side Donghia Associates came to life once Angelo inherited BurgeChair, Manhattan Sectional and Devon Sofa while still creating new Donghia after shortly Burge’s death in 1972. Opening showrooms in Los pieces with the help of the Donghia Design Studio, Chewning is both Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., as well as a perpetuating the brand’s legacy and developing its bright future. ✦ design office in Palm Beach, Angelo’s business expanded at a rapid rate, as did his impressive list of clients. Throughout the 70s and 80s, he became the go-to designer for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Halston, Barbara Walters and Liza Minelli, along with several hotels, country clubs and cultural institutions. A fixture on the New York social scene, Angelo was also known for his lavish entertaining. The man they called the “Saint Laurent of sofas” showed no signs of slowing down with the launch of Donghia Furniture in 1978, selling made-to-order upholstered furniture exclusively to the trade. Angelo continued his successful career until his untimely death in 1985. The company continued to thrive and flourishes today under the watchful eye of Creative Director Chuck Chewning, hired in 2008. Chewning quickly determined that Angelo’s vision from the 1970s combined with his own modern day aesthetic was a perfect combination for today’s luxury design market. He set out to give new life to many of the Donghia “classics” that had been abandoned over the years. He has also renovated most of Donghia’s showrooms, including an incredible 19,000-square-foot showroom in New York City, opening in September for Donghia, Sahco and Rubelli, as well as many of the world’s finest home furnishings companies. In Good Hands With leadership from Dr. Eva Andersson-Dubin, the Dubin Breast Center offers exceptional treatment, in an inviting and tranquil setting

n the heart of Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue and overlooking Central Park, sits the most up-to-date and innovative center for breast health and cancer treatment: the Dubin Breast Center. The Center is the first of its kind—a place devoted to its forward-thinking vision of breast cancer care, focusing on both the physical and emotional health of patients. The 15,000-square-foot facility is an extension of The Tisch Cancer Institute, and home to the first comprehensive breast cancer treatment center at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Opening its doors in April of this year, the Center is the brainchild of Dr. Eva Andersson-Dubin and Glenn Dubin, and took about three-and-a-half years from idea to execution. Dr. Dubin is not only 88 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

a former Ford model, a physician, wife and mother, but a breast cancer survivor. After her diagnosis, despite her knowledge and connection within the medical world, she noticed the lack of communication between her different doctors. Fortunately, with her medical background Dr. Dubin was able to evaluate different treatment options, and set out on a months-long mission to find the best medical care—ultimately deciding to be treated at Mount Sinai. The Dubin’s decided to get even more involved with plans for Mount Sinai's future after Glenn joined the Board of Trustees in 2004. It was this, along with Eva’s personal experience with cancer and professional background as a physician and Glenn’s professional expertise that compelled the couple to take a leadership role in the

creation of a comprehensive breast care center. She designed and developed the Center with high hopes of helping other women within a safe and comfortable environment. "Being a woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer gives me a valuable perspective on what's important from a patient's point of view, and as a physician, how clinical care can be improved,” says Dr. Dubin. The Center is unique in that it offers a holistic approach to breast cancer that goes beyond just treating the disease. As a healthy, active, young woman, Dr. Dubin’s diagnosis was quite unexpected; therefore, she encourages women to take preventative measures. To that end, the center offers screening and detection, and is one of the first in the country—and the first in New York City—to offer Tomosynthesis (3D mammography). The 90 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

use of such specialized equipment allows for earlier and more accurate diagnosis—increasing survival rates. Dr. Dubin notes that while some risk factors are associated with the disease (such as family history, hormone replacement, alcohol consumption, sedentary lifestyle and obesity), risk factors are not always clear—which is why she strongly believes that whether you are high risk or not, regular screenings are important. In addition to surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons dedicated to treating only breast cancer patients, the Center includes a social worker, massage therapist, genetic counseling and psychosocial support and will soon include a nutritionist and psychologist. Not only are the services for women with cancer, but also for those in remission and those looking to minimize their risk of getting the disease. This focus on comprehensive patient care significantly increases quality of life for patients as well as their families. Dr. Dubin also prides the Center on its forward thinking regarding current and future research. George Raptis, MD, MBA, was recruited by Mount Sinai to direct the Dubin Breast Center, and early in the process Dr. Dubin knew that they both shared the same vision for patientcentered care. In May, renowned breast surgeon Elisa Port, MD, FACS, was named Co-Director of the Center. Together, the Dubins and Drs. Port and Raptis are working arduously to develop a multidisciplinary program to include evaluations in radiology, surgery and reconstruction; treatment; and infusion for chemotherapy. “My medical background helps me communicate with the physicians as a peer—which can be very helpful in discussing treatment options,” adds Dr. Dubin. The details and logistics of the Center are continuously evaluated by Drs. Dubin, Port and Raptis but the doctors also look for advice on improvements to patient experience from a panel of women—most of whom are also breast cancer survivors.

Above: Waiting room for infusion/chemotherapy area

The design of the facility was the vision of Dr. Dubin, and she saw it necessary to create a comfortable and calming place for visitors. As a native of Sweden, she was inspired by the style and serenity of her country and purposefully designed a spa-like atmosphere, featuring light-colored wood, soft blues, greens and beige. As breast cancer is a disease that one in eight women will face during her lifetime, the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai is making great leaps to prevent and care for patients and their families throughout the region. The success of the Center is guided by three principles: patient care, research and education. This all happens under one roof, perfectly situated next to Central Park. âœŚ

O

ne can find almost anything in New York, but it’s a rare business that offers authentic spacesuits, classic Duesenbergs and million-dollar diamonds from the same storefront. For Bonhams Auctioneers on Madison Avenue, this kind of diversity is just the tip of the auctioneer’s gavel. From dog paintings to rare coins, few venues offer the breadth and depth of rarities that Bonhams has offered for years, all while steadily expanding its scope. New specialists are constantly being added to the roster of renowned professionals, including ex-museum experts who offer complimentary auction estimates every Wednesday morning to hopeful crowds of collectors. “While many auction houses have dramatically cut staff in this turbulent economy, Bonhams has kept its global vision, aggressively hiring new specialists while adding unique collecting categories to the New York auction calendar,” says Jon King, the company’s Vice President of Business Development. Founded in 1793, Bonhams has expanded into every corner of the world: in recent years, state-of-the-art auction galleries were established in Hong Kong and Sydney. Closer to home, Bonhams is the only major international auction house to hold auctions on both East and West Coasts. While New York remains at the heart of the auction business, Bonhams has fully developed the concept of simultaneous auctions—effectively joining audiences from San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York and London through audio and visual technology. "By offering access to over 600 global auctions in dozens of collecting categories, we like to think of ourselves as a user-friendly gateway to the international auction world,” says King. This Fall, Bonhams will add Toronto to the international mix for the American and Canadian paintings and sculpture auction to be held on November 29. Bonhams’ expansion along with its recent sales in New York is a true testament to the resilience of high-end collectibles even in these troubled economic times. The Asian Art and especially Chinese Art markets are very healthy at present: a pair of huanghuali armchairs from the Ming Dynasty were recently discovered by Bonhams appraisers at a Park Avenue residence—estimated at $80,000-$120,000, the pair sold for $1,498,000. During this year’s Asia Week, an unusual enameled glass snuff bottle from the 18th century sold for $254,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $60,000-80,000. From a sale of Japanese art the same day, Bonhams also donated five percent of the buyer’s premiums to ongoing relief efforts in Japan—the first of several such charitable donations. Bonhams’ remarkable Space History Sale celebrated the 40th anniversary of Alan Shepard’s journey as the first American astronaut. Captivated by the moment’s historical significance, bidders filled the room and jammed the telephone lines, rocketing Alexei Lenov’s flown space suit to $242,000. An extensively annotated sheet by James Lovell and Fred Haise from the famously troubled Apollo 13 mission also sold for $111,020. In June, two sparkling masterworks brought identical prices on the auction block of $792,400: a Tiffany Studios Favrile glass and bronze Wisteria table lamp, and an internally flawless 9.2-carat diamond solitaire ring. Leading out the fall season is another well-crafted jewel, a 1935 Duesenberg. Lavishly outfitted with custom Art Deco coachwork by Derham, this vintage beauty will be offered in conjunction with the upcoming Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance in Connecticut, at one of Bonhams’ many global car auctions. Bonhams has continued to grow market share in the field of Contemporary Art. After a recent Spring sale that featured a $1,027,600 Noguchi sculpture, Bonhams is looking forward to the next auction on November 7 featuring an Alexander Calder stabile-mobile entitled Deux Blancs en Dessous. The striking piece, created in 1974,

was a gift to noted actor Sam Robards from his mother, acclaimed actress Lauren Bacall. Other notable auctions this fall include the Robert H. and Donna L. Jackson Collection of 19th Century Literature, Bonhams’ inaugural sale of stamps, and the charmingly eclectic Gentleman’s Library sale, where mounted taxidermy brushes shoulders with an array of scientific instruments, globes, leather-bound volumes, Georgian furniture and other bookish paraphernalia.

With their unique and specialized selections, Bonhams continues to rock the auction world with sales like their inaugural 20th Century Illustration Art auction this past June. Drawing in collectors from all walks of life, it is no wonder that Bonhams is recognized as one of the most vibrant auction houses today—proving that there really is something for everyone at Bonhams. 580 Madison Avenue, 212.644.9001 ✦

A miniature enamel painting in progress DeLaneau’s Madison Avenue store

Time to Shine DeLaneau’s one of a kind watches bring technical and aesthetic sophistication to women’s wrists

S

ince the opening of its flagship store on Madison Avenue this past April, DeLaneau has garnered attention from the neighborhood as a premiere watchmaker whose distinctive pieces are tailored specifically and solely to women. Emphasizing the importance of mechanics as much as aesthetics, DeLaneau caters to a specific niche of women who look for sophistication both on the inside and outside of their timepieces. Producing up to 200 pieces a year in their Geneva workshop, with approximately 80 of which are custom made for clients, each DeLaneau timepiece is one-of-a-kind. “Most brands employ men to design for women,” says Cristina Wendt Thevanaz, DeLaneau’s CEO and Artistic Director. “There aren’t many brands that offer women choices in quality watches. DeLaneau has changed that—here, women can expect their watches to be as mechanically sophisticated as men’s watches, while still being sensitive to women’s aesthetics.” DeLaneau’s enamel collection is a true testament to the company’s focus on exceptional workmanship. A dying art ever since pocket watches went out of style, enameling is an intricate, delicate process which involves numerous, risky firings. The skilled effort certainly pays off as enameling yields lustrous colors when painted onto the vibrant watch dials. With less than a dozen enamallers left in Europe, DeLaneau employs three artisans who each work on their own miniature enamel paintings from start to finish, inscribing their name on the reverse of the watch panel, as one would on any work of art. Although Wendt Thevanaz fell into watch making by pure coincidence, her focus on elite craftsmanship is apparent in all of DeLaneau’s collections. Using only the finest quality gemstones for their Open Magic collection, DeLaneau’s master artisans set each stone by hand, using traditional techniques. DeLaneau also offers custom engravings onto the clasp of the wristbands—adding yet another distinguishable, elegant detail to these inherently bespoke watches. “Women need an emotional connection to the pieces they wear,” Wendt Thevanaz adds “Their attraction to our pieces is reinforced by the technical quality beneath the watch dial. No one wants to drive a Rolls Royce with a Toyota motor inside of it.” ✦ 98 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

The real estate expert shares his wisdom on . . . real estate relationships

R

esidential real estate information is important and consumers have access to more of it than ever before through their relationships with popular technologies. Serious home buyers and sellers, however, don’t just need information, but information together with professional service. This will not change. Even the most advanced technologies have done little to dilute the essential value of a trusted and professional relationship with an experienced agent whose service goes beyond information, whose understanding of markets, negotiations, and transaction requirements, and whose professional appreciation of the needs of clients and customers cannot be written into code. The fact that the public is more quickly informed and more knowledgeable than ever before, raises the bar for all agents to provide an increased level of service. The real importance of the best new technologies is that they stimulate the most productive relationships with licensed professionals whose service is essential to the complex process of home buying and selling. âœŚ

mickey conlon, brown harris stevens Vice President, Director How would you describe your style? Classic Jazz Age gentleman, but with a very modern sensibility. Think Noël Coward with an iPhone. What distinguishes you from others in your field? Apart from an inordinate bevy of bow ties? Perhaps it’s knowing when a “wall post” is not a substitute for a handwritten note or a personal phone call. Online social networking is a useful tool, but hardly a replacement for basic social graces. Are you currently representing anything that’s unique or newsworthy? I have a charming listing at The Volney, at 74th and Madison. Dorothy Parker lived (and died) there, and her 1953 play The Ladies of the Corridor was loosely based on a few irreverent denizens of the former residential hotel. The play was a flop, but the building is a classic. Describe your relationship with potential buyers and sellers. Bespoke, as no two are alike. Manhattan real estate is a luxury commodity at any price, and I believe it should be exchanged accordingly. Consider the difference between flying private and commercial. We’re embarking on a lengthy journey together—how would you prefer to be delivered to your destination? New Yorkers deserve better than peanuts.

You have a tagline, “Real estate will always be in fashion.” This tagline is my signature; this is what I believe. Real estate, like fashion, is ever present. Regardless of swings in the economy, a person needs a home that reflects their personal sense of style. How would you describe your style? My fashion style and my business style are the same—I care and I pay attention to details. I don’t have an understated fashion style; it is eclectic and I enjoy pairing luxurious items with trendy styles. This juxtaposition of high end and affordable helps me appreciate and sell a wide range of properties in Manhattan. What distinguishes you from others in your field? I truly enjoy people and my greatest pleasure is derived from helping others. My customers are a joy to work with whether a new college graduate, an investor from Hong Kong, or a family that is moving to a new home. Ask any of my clients and they will tell you that I am one of the hardest working brokers out there. Working 24/7, I don’t stop until each customer is happy and I always say what I feel. In my 22 years in the fashion industry, I would never encourage a retailer to purchase items I felt they couldn’t sell and in my 10 years in real estate, I have never sold a property that I felt wasn’t right for my customer. As a result, my business is primarily based on referrals. Are you currently representing anything that is unique or newsworthy? Everything I am representing is unique and newsworthy. I have 11 exclusives all over Manhattan in a wide size and price range. I only take on exclusives that I know are special. Tell us about your outfit. Like a “prewar” apartment, my Chanel jacket and traditional Hermès Kelly bag never go out of style and I pair them with “new development” modernity—a great leather skirt and suede boots.

How would you describe your style? We’re both people who put our hearts and heads into our work, which makes for a dynamic team. What are some of the fashionable addresses you are representing? Developments such as the modern J-Condo and traditional lofts at 50 Bridge Street represent the architectural spectrum in DUMBO. A historic industrial enclave coupled with an 85-acre, coastal green space makes DUMBO a unique investment opportunity. What distinguishes you from others in your field? Our 20 years of diversified experience, including new development marketing and living through market shifts, make our understanding of real estate more vibrant than ink put to paper. Aside from work, I also have a passion for photography and motorcycling. Paul LeMarc enjoys swimming and writing fiction and non-fiction. Describe your relationship with potential buyers. The most important value is trust. When the NovoBrown Group pairs with either an investor, experienced or first-time homeowner, our team becomes fiercely results-driven. We strive towards giving the best possible service and creating a sustainable partnership. Give us a shining moment. We recently represented a foreign asset manager on the purchase of a $6.9 million Tribeca townhouse, which will be converted into a three unit luxury condominium.

Prudential Douglas Elliman’s Dennis Mangone knows New York life and style Dennis Mangone

110 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · SEPTEMBER 2011

FABIEN BARON

Leading Lifestyle

idely regarded as one of the top residential real estate brokers in Manhattan, Dennis Mangone is a leader in lifestyle-driven condominiums. Perhaps it is Mangone’s intimate understanding of the city and its varying neighborhoods, which can be accredited to his New York roots. After moving into Trump World Tower roughly 10 years ago, Mangone launched his real estate career and hasn’t looked back. “I felt that if you live around the buyers, you can understand the buyers,” Mangone says. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” In addition to his expertise on a building’s location, Mangone is also a sought-after consultant to leading developers—such as hotelier and real estate developer Ian Schrager—on the pre-development plans of new and established buildings. It was during the presales of Schrager’s project with Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron at 40 Bond (where Mangone sold 15 of the 26 sponsor units) when he began an invaluable business relationship with Schrager. “Now when I get a call from Ian, I basically drop everything—I have so much respect for him,” Mangone adds. Along with his achievement at 40 Bond (where he currently resides), Mangone has been involved in the success of notable buildings such as Time Warner Center, Trump World Tower and One Beacon Court; all of which are buildings driven by lifestyle and architecture. He understands the discerning tastes and particular needs of his clientele, and therefore, Mangone maintains his own standard of style. “He’s the master of style. In business, you want to be hip but classic. He finds the balance,” says Dottie Herman, President of Prudential Douglas Elliman. Mangone is committed to answering the core needs of each of his clients. This attention to the detail and unwavering dedication has afforded Mangone a clientele roster that includes high profile contemporary art collectors, athletes and entertainers. “He’s smart, a real visionary,” adds Herman, “he’s not just concerned about himself—he’s a team player.” But what’s most rewarding to Mangone is his daily contact with the leaders of the real estate industry such as Louise Sunshine and Pam Liebman. “They were very generous to me early on in my career. Now I am having a great time at Douglas Elliman, working for Dottie and Howard Lorber, two people who continue to support and inspire me.” ✦

The Apthorp offers history and elegance in the heart of the Upper West Side true landmark in the heart of the Upper West Side, The Apthorp has long been treasured for its Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, iconic entry gates, richly ornamented limestone façade and private courtyard drive. Conceived in 1908 by Viscount William Waldorf Astor of the famous John Jacob Astor family, it was the largest, most ambitious apartment house ever built at the time. Each of its apartments had its own unique design and was created with attention to detail and old-world craftsmanship that cannot be purchased for any price today. Astor built “for the ages,” says architectural historian and New York Times ‘Streetscapes’ columnist Christopher Gray. “That’s what made his buildings so remarkable.” And now that the full-block courtyard apartment model has virtually vanished, “this leaves The Apthorp at a high water mark in apartment house design,” says Gray, “where it shall, surely, remain for many, many years to come.” Today The Apthorp has been newly renovated and meticulously restored under the supervision of Broadwall Management of Apthorp LLC (an affiliate of The Feil Organization) and The Apthorp’s Creative Director, renowned interior designer, Stephen Sills. With a client roster that includes fashion notables like Vera Wang and Anna Wintour, and listed as one of Architectural Digest’s “30 Deans of American Design,” Sills’ unique sensitivity to architecture and history of space and function are central to re-envisioning a landmark such as The Apthorp. Setting the tone for the building’s design aesthetic, Sills showcases the graciously proportioned rooms and period hallmarks that define these condominium homes, while bringing them with care and grace into the 21st century. “Buyers are captivated by the opportunity to customize these grand spaces,” says Beth Fisher, Senior Managing Director, Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group, the exclusive sales and marketing agent for The Apthorp. A host of exceptional services and amenities heightens the residential experience at The Apthorp. These include attended East and West gatehouses, four residential lobbies each with its own doorman, mail delivered by hand and on-site parking. A 6,500-square-foot amenity suite is slated for completion by the end of the year. It will include a private spa and fitness center with a complete circuit of weight

training and cardio equipment, a separate yoga/exercise studio, two adjoining treatment suites each with a full bath, plus a steam room and sauna. An entertainment suite will feature a catering kitchen and bar, media, billiards, as well as a playroom and craft center for children. The Apthorp’s landmark homes, impeccable services and close proximity to an array of culture, parks, restaurants and shops make it one of New York’s most coveted residential opportunities. ✦

The Apthorp features grand-scale one to five-bedroom condominium residences, priced from $2,400,000. For a preview, please contact Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group at 212.799.2211, or visit www.theapthorp.com The iconic entry gates of The Apthorp

uthor of the wildly popular Gossip Girl books (which led to the hit TV show), Brooklyn-based Cecily von Ziegesar, grew up commuting to Manhattan to attend The NightingaleBamford School. Many of the tales told in Gossip Girl have a ring of authenticity, mirroring her experiences. von Ziegesar then attended Colby College, a small liberal arts college in Maine. Soon after working for a radio station in Budapest, von Ziegesar returned to the United States to study creative writing at the University of Arizona. She dropped out and started working for the book packaging company Alloy, where she was struck with the idea for Gossip Girl. Today, the wife and mother of two has just released her first adult novel in paperback, titled Class. Author Cecily von Ziegesar

AT WHAT ADDRESS WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE?

I love my Brooklyn neighborhood, Cobble Hill. It’s quiet and full of families and has great restaurants. I go to Manhattan everyday, but I love coming home to Brooklyn. WHEN DID YOU FIRST FEEL LIKE A NEW YORKER? WHAT HAPPENED?

I was living in London and I came back to attend my best friend’s wedding. I passed by the Union Square farmer’s market in a taxi and burst into tears. I hadn’t realized how much I missed the city where I’d grown up. I cried for a week—and then I moved back. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WATERING HOLE FOR LUNCH? FOR DINNER?

I hate going out to lunch. I eat apples and nuts in front of my computer. There’s a great Italian place in my neighborhood that I like for dinner. I’d tell you what it is but then I’d have to kill you. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORKER, PAST OR PRESENT?

My two cats. They get more sleep than any of us. WHO IS THE FUNNIEST?

My six-year-old son is absolutely ridiculous—he gets it from me. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DINNER PARTNER?

My editor, Cindy Eagan. Sometimes we forget to order dinner because we’re having so much fun over cocktails. We’re working on that. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE NEW YORK CLICHÉ?

That we’re unfriendly. I get stopped at least twice a day for directions (when I’m jogging, in the park with my kids, lugging bags of groceries and when I’m late getting home, completely stressed out) and I’m always friendly, helpful and informative. I live for giving people directions.

Café Carlyle. Okay, so a lot of tourists go to see him, but I cried the whole time—it moved me. And the Dover sole is very good. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORK SOUND?

The Staten Island Ferry’s horn. It’s so nautical and romantic. I can hear it from my apartment if the windows are open. WHAT’S YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING NEW YORK MOMENT?

Meeting Katie Couric before I went on The Today Show. It was right after she announced she was leaving to do the evening news. I could have said something nice or asked her an intelligent question, but instead I said, “I’m Cecily von Ziegesar,” and she said, “I’m Katie Couric.” And that was that. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GET AROUND NEW YORK, AND WHY?

The subway. I’m a big fan.

Walking, absolutely. In nice weather I walk home from Manhattan to Brooklyn. This is the best walking city in the world.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE NEW YORK MOMENT?

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT LIVING IN NEW YORK?

Watching Woody Allen play at the

Please, it’s really not that hard. ✦

WHAT PART OF THE NEW YORK LIFESTYLE CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
