CULTURE | KARAOKE Shrines, temples, amazing scenery, hot springs, Japanese food, ramen noodles, and shopping. There are so many things that you MUST do in Japan. At the end of the day, why don’t you enjoy singing at a Karaoke Box in the evening? A Karaoke Box is an uniquely Japanese high-tech entertainment in which you can enjoy singing as much as you want in your own private space.

What is a Karaoke Box?

Karaoke is a way to enjoy singing along with background music. This born-in-Japan culture has spread and now is enjoyed by many people throughout the world. Overseas, when people go to karaoke, they usually sing in front of other people at a bar or pub. However, the mainstream of Japanese karaoke is that of set-ups of individual rooms. You can enjoy singing to your heart’s content in your own private space.

How to Use a Karaoke Box

At first, you need to sign in at the front desk when you enter the Karaoke Box establishment. The fare structure depends on the establishment, but it usually depends on the number of people, time of day, and kind of drinks you order. Some establishments have a plan with all-you-can-drink alcoholic beverages. First, you need to check the fare system and its contents. Once you enter the room, all you need to do is choose a song and start singing.

Easy Control with Touch Panel

Choose the song you want to sing through the electronic index book like Smart DAM of Daiichikosho. You can also adjust the key of the song in the way you like. By playing around with the touch panel, you will gain an appreciation of Japanese technology. Besides Japanese songs, there are many English, Chinese, and Korean songs and you can sing as many songs as you want during the hour you choose.

Various Ways to Enjoy

The best part of the Karaoke Box is that you can enjoy singing even if you don’t like singing in front of other people. In Japan, some people go to a Karaoke Box by themselves and belt out their songs without having to feel self-conscious or embarrassed. Relax and sing your favorite songs, or sing as a group with tambourines. You can also enjoy costume play in the “corroboration room.” Your choice! Why don’t you try singing those Japanese songs you have wanted to sing for a long time? You can challenge the grading system and get a check of your singing skill. You can also enjoy food and drink between songs. Let’s enjoy the night in Japan at a Karaoke Box!

The original, literal meaning of Karaoke is “empty + orchestra” (“kara” means “empty” in Japanese). In Japan, Karaoke machines were first set up in some pubs in the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, the Karaoke Box was developed and specialized for enjoying singing only, rather than for singing as an add-on to drinking. Karaoke first began with cassette tape. Nowadays, online Karaoke has become mainstream. And now you can adjust a variety of high tech-functions, such as echo function, musical key and rhythm, and there is also a skill grading system and digital-to voice translator. In the early days, people read lyrics from a lyric book. Now, the lyrics are displayed on a monitor, and the words you should be singing are highlighted in color. Many Japanese people enjoy karaoke very much. No.1 Karaoke chain store in JAPAN

SETO INLAND SEA

Trip to Setouchi – Seto Inland Sea Area Full of Sunshine

Spring sunshine has become dazzling… Why don’t you travel the sun-drenched Seto Inland Sea? Relax and enjoy art, nature and history there. Olive Park

Shodoshima

is the second largest island next to Awaji Island in the Seto Inland Sea area. Similarly to Sado Island in eastern Japan, Shodo Island in western Japan has a long history and many folk customs. It is dotted with picturesque places and movie locations, as well. More than 100 years have passed since the first olive tree was planted there. The hillside is a sea of olive trees. Enjoy walking around and checking out original goods of olive oil in Olive Park. Olive hamachi(young yellowtail) and olive beef, which are produced from fish and cattle fed on olives, are also gaining attention in recent years. The island is famous as the setting of Twenty-four Eyes, a movie based on the same title novel written by female writer Sakae Tsuboi (18991967). At Misaki no Bunkyojo (setting of a school in the movie) in Twenty-four Eyes Movie Village, you can feel the atmosphere of an earlier generation. The film is also screened in a mini-theater there. When you walk around Hishio no Sato, streets with many soy sauce factories, you will smell the fresh scent of soy sauce. Making soy sauce in Shodoshima has about a 400-year history and the factories and the storehouses are still operating since being built 100 years ago. You can find impressive black roof tiles and walls as a result of mold of soy sauce. Some factories allow a tour if you make a reservation. Enjoy taking a walk and soy sauce sweets. You can experience a process of making somen (thin wheat noodles) called “hashiwake.” Somen is also a specialty food of the island. A reservation is required. Meiro no Machi has narrow alleys like a labyrinth because such a layout was considered to protect the town from pirates of the Seto Inland Sea in the past. The Dofuchi Strait is recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s narrowest strait. A sand beach that is available for walking from Shodo Island only when the tide is out is called “Angel Road,” and is considered a spiritual “power spot.” The breathtaking scenery of Kankakei Gorge is also a can’t-miss place.

Art Islands

Naoshima

is known as an island of art. Contemporary art fits in with natural beauty. There are many places to visit on the island: museums such as Benesse House Museum, Chichu Art Museum and Lee Ufan Museum, all of which are designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando; Art House Project where you can visit seven sites open to the public; and Naoshima bath “I♥湯”. Good for both strolling and art appreciation, as many works of art are placed in various locations around the island.

Teshima

is an another art island after Naoshima. Uniting the creative visions of artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa, Teshima Art Museum incorporates wind, sound, and light into the inside of the building, exhibiting countless shifting appearances as time passes or the seasons change. As re-entry is permitted on the same day, visiting several times is recommended. Teshima Yokoo House, a collaboration between artist Tadanori Yokoo and architect Yuko Nagayama, was created by altering and renovating an old private house, and not only representative paintings but also installations are exhibited in a garden and inside a tower, the whole property itself being an art space. Bicycle rental is recommended as the best way for looking around the island, enjoying the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, and rice terraces. Shima Kitchen is a restaurant that provides delicious local food where you can’t help lingering because of the comfortable atmosphere. From the observatory of Mt. Dan-yama, you can enjoy beautiful island views of the Seto Inland Sea. Teshima Yokoo House Photo: Tadasu Yamamoto

Yashima-ji Temple

Ritsurin Garden

Rated three stars in Michelin Green Guide Japan, Ritsurin Garden is one of the largest gardens in Japan. Having ceremonial tea in a teahouse, or taking a Japanese-style boat cruise would also be a memorable experience. Yashima (mountain) is known for an historic battle in the 12th century between the two powerful warrior groups of those days, namely the Heike (Taira family) and the Genji (Minamoto family). From the top of the mountain, you can command a grandstand view of the sea. Yashima-ji Temple is the 84th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage route of 88 temples. Make a visit to Shikoku Mura, an open-air architectural park in which 33 old folk houses and storehouses from around Shikoku have been moved and restored. Mure-cho in Takamatsu City is a production area of granite, considered the world’s most valuable stones. There are about 300 stone factories and when Mure Genpei Ishi-Akari Road, a night festival is held, soft light from stone lanterns illuminate the roads for two months in every summer (from Aug 8-Sep 19 in 2015).

Great Seto Bridge spans the Seto Inland Sea. The splendid view of the bridge can be seen from Mt. Washu and the bridge is illuminated on Sundays and Japanese holidays. From Overnight Train Sunrise Seto (from Tokyo), you can see the sunrise when crossing the bridge if you are lucky. When you take Marine Liner, getting a window seat is recommended. You can see beautiful scenery of islands dotting the sea from the train when crossing the bridge, which takes about one hour.

Don’t forget to eat udon noodles in Kagawa Prefecture, which are characterized their chewiness. Note that some udon restaurants are run by noodle factories and most of them are closed on Sunday. Honetsukidori means roasted chicken thighs with bone, which go well with beer. You can find it at restaurants and also izakaya pubs. You can enjoy different seasoning in different restaurants, and also different taste depending on whether the chicken is young or old. Ozoni rice-cake soup on New Year’s Day in Kagawa uniquely uses white-type miso soup and rice cakes with sweet bean paste. In Hinase, a place famous for oysters, in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, one of the trendiest casual foods is kakioko, a type of okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza) with a lot of oysters. The rich flavor of oysters goes well with okonomiyaki sauce. (Kakioko is available from late October to early April.)

Ushimado is called “the Aegean in Japan.” From the observatory in Olive Garden, you will encounter the lovely landscape of the Seto Inland Sea. Shizutani School was a school for common people built during the 17th-18th centuries and directly run by the Okayama domain. Surrounded by mountains, most of its buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan and the auditorium is the only Japanese National Treasure as a school building. Traditional Bizen ware pottery is used for its roof tiles. Bizen ware is a type of Japanese pottery that is rustic and characterized by the absence of glaze and painting. As there are many Bizen ware potteries and galleries in the village of Imbe, you can look around the kilns and even try your hand at making Bizen ware yourself, if you wish. Okayama is one of the low-rainfall areas in Japan and therefore famous for good fruits. Let’s go fruit picking, such as for white peaches, Muscat and Pione grapes, etc.

First let’s visit Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. This museum was built in 1933 as a residence of the former royal family memebr Asaka no Miya, and later the building was opened to the public as a museum. It was also well known for using the Art Deco style that was a popular in Europe in 1920s-30s. With a green garden, this is a place where you can enjoy the beauty of nature, the buildings, and art works together. Back to Meguro Station, there is narrow and steep slope “Gyonin Zaka.” Go down the slope and turn left, and you can see Meguro Gajoen. Gajoen has gorgeous and sophisticated decorations and is a multipurpose facility that can be used for weddings, dining and staying. Hyakudan Kaidan (100 stairs) here is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. Hyakudan Hina Matsuri is a charming event held from late January to early March every year, displaying a variety of traditional dolls. Meguro Parasitological Museum is the only museum of parasite insects in the world. It houses collection of about 60,000 specimens of parasite insects and, among them, exhibits 300 important specimens. The museum is very popular in the realm of subculture for being novel and scary. Just enjoy the museum to learn the strange and clever way of parasite insects’ life, forgetting that they are “scary things.” Interesting goods are also sold there. Next you can take a promenade along the Meguro River, a very popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. You can enjoy the lovely flowers in a quiet atmosphere while seeing the reflection on the water. There are also many variety stores, cafes, and other unique, stylish shops nearby. Shopping or having tea Nakanohashi of Meguro River here is enjoyable, too. Ebisu Yokocho is a shopping district with 21 unique eateries that once flourished as “Yamashita Shopping Center” in the Showa period (1926-1989). The district is just like an old-fashioned neighborhood, and vitality of the past can be felt. Museum of YEBISU BEER is a rare facility in Japan that prefixes a brand name of a single product. It is an amusement facility not only for Yebisu beer fans or general beer fans, but also a place where a wide range of people can enjoy with all the five senses. Yebisu Garden Place is an oasis spot in the bustling city, with water and greenery. It is considered a landmark of Ebisu. Yebisu Garden Place Tower houses offices, restaurants and shops. There is also Glass Square, Yebisu Mitsukoshi Department Store, and The Westin Tokyo hotel. It is a fashionable and great place for rest, visit, shopping, eating and playing.

Goods of Meguro Parasitological Museum

Basic Japanese Home Cooking

Let’s learn from a veteran Japanese housewife!

Served on a large plate, this makes a gorgeous party dish

海鮮ちらし寿司 Kaisen Chirashizushi (Seafood Chirashi Sushi ) Ingredients (serves 4) Sushi rice ..............................................................3 cups Nori . ................................................................1/2 sheet Wasabi . ..............................................................to taste Oba (green perilla leaves) ..................................to taste Gari (sliced sweet pickled ginger) .....................to taste

Your choice of fresh sashimi-grade seafood Tuna.........................................................................100g Salmon................................................................... 100g Red sea bream....................................................... 100g Squid...................................................................... 100g Soy sauce-marinated ikura (salmon roe) ..............100g

Cooking directions:

Sushi looks pretty on individual plates, too.

att. Recipe

Prepare the sushi rice. See http://www.att-japan.net/en/recipe/dish?code=EK000040 for the recipe. Cut the nori sheet into 3-cm width strips then, using scissors, cut each strip into smaller strips. Slice the tuna, salmon and red sea bream into thin fillets. Cut the squid into fine strips.

Using a knife, slice the fish diagonally to make fillets. Garnish with the wasabi and gari. Finely chopped yuzu peel is nice as a garnish.

Place the sushi rice and then the nori and oba on a plate.

Ingredient Options

Use a small plate of soy sauce for dipping or drizzle over the chirashi.

Top with the tuna, salmon, red sea bream, squid, and ikura.

- Tuna marinated for 5–10 minutes in soy sauce (1 tablespoon) and black sesame seeds (3 tablespoons). - Red sea bream cured with kombu. Place a single layer of red sea bream filets on a kombu sheet. Sprinkle with salt and add another sheet of kombu on top. Let sit for 30–60 minutes in the fridge. The kombu absorbs the moisture from the fish and adds flavor. - Boiled shrimp. Butterfly the shrimp by cutting along the back without cutting all the way through. - If you do not like raw fish, avocado and lemon slices can be substituted.

Tips - Always use sashimi-grade seafood. Have an assortment of your favorite sashimi-grade seafood. The best way is to purchase saku (sashimi block). Instructor: Kazuko Karasawa I learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I’ve been cooking for 20 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

Japanese Liquid Measures: 1 cup = 200 ml = 6.76 fl oz 1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 0.5 fl oz 1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 0.16 fl oz

high heat

At first, it seemed to be quite simple, but it actually required much attention to details (like how the raw fish should be sliced). From this, one can clearly understand how Japanese consider every detail! (Summer)

medium heat

All the ingredients were placed on the sushi rice and created a great taste! It was definitely the most special experience during my time in Japan. (Chi)

low heat

Rail

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Tokyo Furii Kippu(東京フリーきっぷ)(www.jreast.co.jp/e/ pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,590 yen. JR Kanto Area Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/) is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains. Prices are 8,300 yen (Adults), and 4,200 yen (Children).

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃 走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Bus 巴士

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

KYOTO

Kyoto in Spring The Aoi Matsuri, or Hollyhock Festival, is an annual festival held at Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrines. In times past, everything—the palace bamboo blinds, court carriages, costumes, bullocks, horses and more—were adorned with hollyhock leaves and thus the name. An elegant procession reminding people of the heyday of the Heian dynasty (about 1,000 years ago) begins at Kyoto Gosho at 10:30 a.m. and, after parading around the city, ends at the Kamigamo Shrine via the Shimogamo Shrine. It is one of the three major festivals in Kyoto and is grandly elegant. Aoi Shimogamo Jinja Shrine, Kamigamo Jinja Shrine, Matsuri and Kyoto Gosho, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture / May 15, 2015

Shinjuku Robot Restaurant : Take a walk (OK, a seat) on the crazy side Leaving the Robot Restaurant at Shinjuku’s Kabukicho, one thought was buzzing through my head: a visit should be mandatory to all tourists, especially the short-term ones. Besides being crazy fun, the Robot Restaurant offers perceptive visitors many insights in several deep aspects of the way the Japanese see themselves and the world – from references to the indigenous Shinto religion and the medieval and early modern periods to the way technology is perceived and the cornucopia of influences making today’s Japan. But this is heavy stuff so let’s stick to the fun: diving in the Robot Restaurant feels like being inside a pachinko machine or a sci-fi movie. From the lounge band in the waiting area to the show dungeon through the unbelievably colorful stairwell, you see Japan at its most flamboyant – the only thing similarly flamboyant is the matsuri folk festivals, but these are too Japanese-centric to make sense to tourists. The Robot Restaurant though has taken into account its international popularity and it certainly accommodates non-Japanese: it’s one of the most “touristfriendly” places in this city. The show itself is hard to describe: a unique 90-minute experience featuring not only robots, mythological creatures, pretty girls, lasers, music, dance and (some) audience participation, so jam-packed with action and all kinds of audio/visual stimuli that when it’s over you wonder how time flew so fast – which is all that matters. As for the rest, the food is standard bento boxed lunches found anywhere in Japan (although due to customer demand from March on it’s going to be – what else - sushi), the drinks are beers and soft drinks in the show area (in the lounge there’s other stuff too). The program changes frequently, so you have a reason to come back. Is all this worth the ¥7,000/$60? You’ll be the judge but for me, definitely! G.M. (Greece)
