Ted Gumbart

Commissioner Gumbart became the fourth full-time Commissioner of the Atlantic Sun Conference in January 2007. He joined the A-Sun staff in November of 1991, as its first Assistant Commissioner. He was promoted to Associate Commissioner in 1997, and to Senior Associate Commissioner in 2004. In his roles over the past 18 years, Gumbart has overseen the championships program, conference marketing, and business administration issues for the A-Sun. He coordinated the development of the A-Sun television package, managed the internal development of the IT systems, directed conference sports scheduling, and coordinated the conference officiating programs. Gumbart has also directed numerous special projects during his tenure, including the introduction of ASun.TV in the fall of 2007, the name and logo change in 2001, the compilation of the first comprehensive A-Sun Policy Manual in 1992, the debut of the first conference Web site, the initiation of officiating coordinator programs in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball, and the 25th Anniversary Celebration throughout 2003-04.

Gumbart has extensive NCAA committee service and is currently a member of PROP (Playing Rules Oversight Panel). He recently concluded a four-year term (2003-2007) as the A-Sun delegate to the NCAA Management Council, where he also served as a member of the Legislative Review Subcommittee and the Membership Subcommittee. From 1997-2002, Gumbart represented the A-Sun on the NCAA Championships and Competition Cabinet, where he served as a member of the Certified Events Subcommittee, the Administrative Committee, and chaired the Nominating Subcommittee. As a member of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), he served on the CCA Executive Committee in 2008-09 as subdivional Vice President. The A-Sun was one of the founding conferences of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. Gumbart was instrumental in the organization of the swimming league and has served as its Executive Director since its formal inception in 2007. Prior to joining the A-Sun staff he worked at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, from 1985-1991. He served as assistant information director for three years while getting his graduate degree. Promoted to director in 1988, Gumbart also taught undergraduate marketing and consumer behavior courses as an adjunct professor at Stetson. He also served two seasons as information director for the New South Women’s Conference, which later merged with the A-Sun (then TAAC) in 1991. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics & Business at Lafayette College (1984), and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Stetson University (1987). Gumbart and his wife Mary Beth have been married for 16 years, and they have a daughter, Taylor Suzanne, who will turn five this January. The Gumbarts reside in Macon, where the conference office has been since April 1992.
