Happy NEW YEAR

rom the staff and contributors of Atlantic Ave Magazine to you, we wish you a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year. We are hoping that 2016 brings the world peace. Outside of our little world here in Delray Beach, the global picture has been murky. Terrorism, violence, fear, hatred and intolerance seem to be on the rise. It is our wish that we begin to make a dent in those issues and more in 2016. We are also hoping that here at home we take some time to express gratitude for living in a very nice place but also realize that our hometown is not immune to problems and that people in our community struggle too. End of year giving is a ritual in America for a variety of reasons. It is said that nationwide, $1 billion a day is donated in the month of December to charities. But the needs are year round and they are local. Please consider getting involved in 2016, Delray Beach needs you. With the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino still weighing heavily on our hearts and minds, we thought it was appropriate to share some good news. There’s a lot to celebrate these days. Here are a few items to smile about. • The team at Spodak Dental has teamed up with Marlins great Giancarlo Stanton to bring dental care to kids in need. Stanton discovered the Spodak magic when he received care from the team after devastating injury caused by being hit in the face with a pitch. He was so taken with the team’s culture that he joined forces with Dr. Craig to bring smiles to the faces of children. It’s a heartwarming story. • Coach T.J. Jackson and his staff and players at Atlantic High are to be commended for a great football season. The team’s play restored pride to the program and got the community pumped up about high school football again. Kudos to boosters Lee Cohen and Ryan Boylston for their behind the scenes support of the team. • It is wonderful to see key agencies in Delray Beach collaborating again. Under the moniker Team Delray, the city’s alphabet soup of agencies is back to doing what Delray does best: working together on common goals and challenges. Collaboration is Delray’s secret sauce. Our community hashtag ought to be #let’smakeitwork. And there’s more, much more. That is why Atlantic Avenue magazine exists…to shine a spotlight on our great town, it’s people and its businesses. Enjoy and have a wonderful Jeff Perlman, Editor New Year!

U.S. Military Veterans Get Christmas Gift to Help with Healing

Two U.S. military veterans recieved a Christmas present that could help change their lives for the better. On December 18, in Fort Pierce, they received a service dog that has been trained just for them, and may help them with healing and recovering from combat situations. The dogs have been trained by a nonprofit organization called Paws of War, and were given to the veterans free of charge. “This is what we do,” explains Lauren Driscoll, a trainer for Paws of War. “Trained service dogs have been proven to help our veterans with everything from post-traumatic stress disorder to anxiety, so we are pleased to be able to help two more veter-

ans this holiday season.” The two veterans who received the dogs are Derek Montgomery and Jason Brown. Derek is a resident of St. Louis and served in the Marine Corps. He was deployed to Afghanistan with the 2nd Marine division, with a small team of Marines to support the Republic of Georgia in their combat operations. Jason lives in Fort Pierce, Fla. He spent 14 years in the military, serving in the Army National Guard and active duty, until his retirement in 2014. “While we try to help veterans all year long, it’s especially nice to be able to help them at Christmas,” says Robert Misseri, president of Paws of War. “Their new service dog can be a major step in the right direction in terms of therapy and healing.” Both dogs were rescues from Dogs and Cats Forever, a no-kill animal shelter located in Fort Pierce. Driscoll has successfully trained 12 dogs prior to the two being paired up with the veterans this month. She is the owner of Pet Peeves Dog Training Florida, and volunteers her time for the Paws of War organization. Paws of War is an all volunteer organization that provides assistance to military members and their pets, and provides service and therapy dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD. The GFWC Woman’s Club of Delray Beach, which supports a variety of nonprofit organizations in the community, recently elected its new slate of officers for the 2016 year. Serving as co-presidents for the upcoming year are Joann Haros and Trish Jacobson. Mal Bates was elected first vice-president and Mary Ann Volpe was selected as second vice-president. Mary Reis will serve as recording secretary, Janice Stern was elected corresponding secretary and Flo Lafevre will serve as treasurer. The new board was installed during a ceremony led by Linda Ferris, past GFWC District 10 director, now a member of the GFWC West Palm Beach Woman’s Club. “We’re excited to have a very strong new board leading the organization,” said Haros, who is returning as co-president. “Our new officers are all committed to seeing our organization succeed and to our community.” This year, members chose to purchase and donate books for Orchard View Elementary School, rather than hold an an-

nual gift exchange. In addition, members also purchased and sorted sweets that were delivered to seniors in Abbey Delray. “Our organization has continued to grow over the last few years and we’re now able to do more for our community,” Jacobson said. “Our members enjoy being an important part of Delray Beach and are proud to support our schools, our libraries and other organizations.” Much of the funding for the club’s charitable giving comes from “Real Men Bake” the organization’s annual fundraiser. This year, the April 15 event will be the “Real Men Bake and Rock at the Sock Hop,” which will be held in the historic gymnasium at Old School Square. Proceeds will benefit charities assisting women and children in our community. For more information about sponsorship opportunities, call Susan Ruby, 561271-3590. Santa made his way to Delray Beach in his BMW convertible to spread joy to thousands of children despite the event being rescheduled due to weather. The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) managed to pull off yet another successful Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony after having to move the event back a week because of December rains. “We were hoping to still draw a great crowd for the rain date, and sure enough they showed up,” said Stephanie Immelman, Director of the DBMC. The excitement for Santa and the start of the Delray Beach Christmas season was not diminished, and droves of jubilant children and festive onlookers made their way out to Old School Square to enjoy the night. tic Avenue was alive with the sounds of live music and cheerful banter as people made their way past merry vendors and in and out of the hopping restaurants and shops on their way to the lighting of the 100 foot tree. The evening’s festivities were broadcast throughout the county by Maverick from WiLD 95.5 who took the reins as the host for the joyous ceremony. He even accompanied Santa and Mrs. Claus up the fire truck ladder for the lighting ceremony.

The event was made possible by generous sponsors like Vista BMW, State Farm, Bank United, Waste Management, Putt ‘N Around, Marriott Delray Beach, Downtown Development Authority and Crane’s Beach House. Now that Delray Beach is a rising star in the art, culture and social scene, it might seem a little difficult to find affordable activities, shops or restaurants. I am here to prove you wrong. Delray Beach offers a mix of high-end boutiques with laid-back restaurants, and events for the whole family or nightclubs for night owls. Here is what you can do in Delray Beach in January for $50 or less.

lean out the brain cobwebs because it’s a new year and you have a clean slate for creating whatever you want to accomplish this year. January is International Creativity Month and what better month to indulge in the possibilities of the blank canvas that is the next 365 days. If you need a little help making friends with your creative gene, head to the 27th Annual Downtown Delray Beach Festival of the Arts and take a cue from artists who have been stretching the creative boundaries for years. You’ll find hand-crafted artwork including glass, photography, painting, mixed media, fiber, jewelry and more, all at one of the best affairs in the U.S. consistently rated by Sunshine Artist Magazine. This festival hosts hundreds of artists along a one mile span of Atlantic Avenue from Federal Highway to A1A, so grab your walking shoes and your creative spirit because there is no better scenic backdrop for an art festival. Best part is that the festival is free to attend, which leaves plenty of doll-hairs for you to possibly purchase a piece of art that will spark your creativity for months to come. The festival is held January 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit www.artfestival.com or call (561) 746-6615 for more information.

cannot stress it enough, but it is so important for you to be your No. 1 fan! You are the most important person in the room, and self-love should be your daily perfume. January is Self-Love Month so practice, practice, practice so you can be the strongest version of yourself in 2016. A good test would be to attend the Delray 26 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Garlic Fest is held January 29 from 5 to 11 p.m., January 30 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and January 31 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and tickets start at $12. Visit www.dbgarlicfest.com or call (561) 279-0907 for more information.

Beach Garlic Fest and see if you can stand tall with your friends all day after scarfing down garlic-infused foods. The 17th Annual Garlic Fest is back in full swing as the “Best Stinkin’ Party in Town” and you’re invited to the three-day food and entertainment extravaganza. The event is dedicated to exploring the numerous health (did you know garlic is extremely good for your heart?) and culinary possibilities of garlic. You’ll be privy to not only Gourmet Alley, which boasts tasty treats such as garlic ice cream, garlic crab cakes, garlic pizza and more, but also a Garlic Chef cooking competition and the Cloves and Vines Wine Garden. There’s also entertainment all the live long day and night so you can jam out with your garlic out. Either way you look at it, practice some good ol’ fashioned self-love at a fun festival with delicious food and jazzy tunes. The

ou can keep your coffee, I’ll stick to a delicious cup of hot tea. An occasional lemon slice and maybe some milk, I’m not picky. January is National Hot Tea Month and you’re in luck because one of the most charming tea spots I’ve ever been to is located in your backyard. Yaxche Tearoom is the coziest little slice of perfectness that you’ve ever walked into, and you’ll actually never want to leave. You are encouraged to try any one (or seven) of their more than 100 different types of tea from all around the world and take a seat on one of their eclectically designed seats in one of their sensory-enhanced rooms, indoors or out. They also brew their tea (hot or iced) using Good Water, which is filtered water so pure it is the same water they serve in the White House. You can also grab a locally-baked sweet treat or order a snack from their limited menu, most of which cost just a few dollars. Don’t forget to peruse the collection of handmade arts and crafts while you wait for your tea, or enjoy live music. A portion of all proceeds is donated to “the pursuit of providing pure water for the planet”, so you can sip your tea knowing you’ve helped future generations. Tea is so good for you, and for the planet, thanks to the good people at Yaxche. Yaxche is located at 14 S. Swinton Ave. Look for them on facebook or call (561) 865-7618 for more information and hours.

T

he only reason I go to the movies is the popcorn. It’s always perfectly popped, intensely buttery and now the theaters even have a white cheddar seasoning, as if movie-going could get any better! However, lucky you (and me!), going to the movies is no longer necessary to get your popcorn fix. National Popcorn Day is January 19 so strut your kernel stuff to The Original Popcorn House because you’re about to enter the land of popped corn heaven. They literally have more flavors than you know what to do with, and a few enticing flavors include pancakes and bacon, spicy buffalo and blue cheese, dill pickle, red hot cinnamon, white chocolate vanilla Oreo, peanut butter chocolate drizzle and more (and more and more). You can fill a one, two or three and a half gallon tin with a single flavor, or you can create a tin with multiple flavors to get your complete fix. A tin with multiple flavors! Is this thing on? Check, check. You can build a one-gallon tin with up to three flavors for $22 or try a half-gallon of one flavor for a few dollars less. You can thank me now. The Original Popcorn House is located at 10 N.E. Fifth Ave. Visit www.originalpopcornhouse.com or call (561) 865-7300 for more information and flavors.

N

ew Year’s resolutions are the pits, but maybe it’s just because the resolution isn’t realistic. Instead, for example, of thinking about how to lose 20 pounds before swimsuit season, how about you focus on getting healthy and fit. January is International Quality of Life Month and there are numerous gyms located within lunging distance of the Avenue so you’re sure to find something that fits your healthy needs. PurCycle offers spin bike sessions that are specifically designed to burn fat and boost your metabolic rate. There’s even live DJ spin classes every Saturday so they make sweating fun, and a single class is $25 (but there’s also a free class offer). If you want a little more of the traditional workout sessions – but still with a spin – then head to Slash Fitness where they offer weight training, high intensity interval training, and functional training/stretch/barre/yoga and practically promise results. A single class costs $25 but they also have a free class offer. If you want less impact (but still serious results), Xtend Barre Delray Beach where they’ll work you out with a Pilates-based, dance-amplified workout that uses the ballet barre, yoga straps, balls weights and stretch bands to give you a workout you didn’t even know existed. They have a new client special for a BOGO for $20, and unlimited classes for two weeks are $49. Whatever your workout or weight-loss pleasure, there are a ton of local fitness houses that are here for you and your unwanted insulation. Sweat it out, but not over the price. s a 26 year old Asian landing in the United States, I began my career as a dishwasher and bus boy. As a waiter, English was taught to me mostly by my customers. Cooking became a hobby to me, and after finding so much joy in it, it became my passion. As a sushi lover I delved into sushi preparation and uncovered my true talent as a premier sushi chef. At that point, the artistic preparation of sushi became my number one passion and has been ever since. As a businessman, my philosophy in the food industry is simple. Food is like fashion... in order to succeed, you must be an innovator and constantly stay ahead of the crowd when it comes to the latest trends and interests. I am now the executive sushi chef at Prime of Downtown Delray Beach. PRIME RESTAURANT Steak, Sushi, Seafood, Italian 29 SE 2nd Ave. Delray Beach, FL 33444 561-865-5845 www.primedelray.com

Gotta See

January 8 While it opened Christmas Day in limited 70 mm release, Quentin Tarantino’s ultra-violent, R-rated Western, “The Hateful Eight” opens wide on January 8. Let us warn you up front this movie is three hours, ten minutes long and it is shown with an intermission. If you are OK with that, you may enjoy this complicated yarn about bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who are aboard a stagecoach through Wyoming in the post-Civil War years bound for the town of Red Rock. Along the way they encounter fellow bounty hunter Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a Southern renegade who claims to be the new Sheriff. A snowstorm forces them to hole

Olivia Munn “Ride Along 2”

up at Minnie’s Haberdashery, where they meet Bob (Damien Bichir), Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), cowpuncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen) and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). Got that? The question is, will they make Red Rock without killing one another? “The Revenant” is also a violent saga of betrayal, survival and revenge, written and directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Birdman,” “Buitiful”). Leonardo DiCaprio stars as 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is mauled by a grizzly bear, left for dead and robbed by his hunting party. Glass survived and embarked on a perilous journey through the wilderness to exact revenge on his betrayers. Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Lukas Haas costar. The screenplay is based on Michael Punke’s novel, which is based on Hugh Glass’s actual history. January 15 “The 5th Wave” refers to the latest wave of alien attacks on Planet Earth, which has been reduced to the Stone Age. Teenaged Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Moretz) survives, but her brother has gone missing and the boy helping her find him may be an alien in disguise. The script by Susannah Grant is based on a young adult novel by Richard Yancey. Nick Robinson, Alex Roe, Maiko Monroe, Maggie Siff and Maria Bello co-star. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube ride again under the direction of Tim Story in the sequel “Ride Along 2,” which continues the misadventures of the mismatched Atlanta cop duo. Also featured are Olivia Munn, Ken Jeong, Glen Powell and Benjamin Bratt. Ah those developers will plunder anywhere there is a buck to be made. “Norm of the North” is a computer-animated comedy about a polar bear (voice of Zachary Graham as a cub, Rob Schneider as an adult) who discovers developers plan to build condos in his native Arctic habitat. So Norm goes to New York City with his cute lemming sidekicks to confront the greedy despoilers.

Bill Nighy, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong and Loretta Devine provide additional voices. January 22 Robert De Niro is “Dirty Grandpa.” Perhaps that’s all you need to know about this raunchy comedy written by John Phillips (“Bad Santa 2.”). OK, Zac Efron is his grandson Jason Kelly, who is set to marry Meredith (Julianne Hough), his boss’s uber-controlling daughter. Grandpa Dick (De Niro) has other ideas, and tricks Jason into driving him to Daytona and the party of his life. Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch and Dermot Mulroney co-star. “The Boy” is not your normal kid. For one thing he is a life-sized porcelain doll resembling an 8-year-old boy. American girl Greta (Lauren Cohan) accepts a job with Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire, a rich, elderly British couple who are going on an extended holiday and want someone to be nanny for their “son” Brahms. They leave a list of strict rules that must not be broken or something terrible will happen. When Greta inadvertently breaks a few rules, she enlists the help of a grocery delivery man (Javier Botet) to combat whatever evil forces are threatening her. January 29 It’s a spoof, in case you are wondering. In “Fifty Shades of Black” Marlon Wayans co-wrote and stars as Mr. Black, a rich man who tries to dominate his girlfriend (Kali Hawk), with mixed results. Mike Epps, Fred Willard, Affion Crockett and Jane Seymour round out the cast, directed by Mike Tiddes (“Haunted House 2”). Those nor’easters can really get brutal. If you doubt it, watch “The Finest Hours,” about the true-life February 18, 1952 storm that struck New England and wreaked havoc, including the literal ripping in half of an oil tanker named SS Pendleton, bound for Boston. Thirty men were trapped in the sinking stern half of the ship. First Assistant Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) took charge, contacting the Coast Guard base in Chatham, Mass. Capt. Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) launched a daring rescue mission in a wooden lifeboat with an underpowered engine fighting frigid temperatures, hurricane-force winds and 60-foot waves. Craig Gillespie (“MillionDollar Arm”) directs.

My Name Is Lucy Barton

by Elizabeth Strout Released January 12th A new book by Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout is cause for celebration. Her bestselling novels, including Olive Kitteridge and The Burgess Boys, have illuminated our most tender relationships. Now, in My Name Is Lucy Barton, this extraordinary writer shows how a simple hospital visit becomes a portal to the most tender relationship of all—the one between mother and daughter. Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable.

The book about that trip, Notes from a Small Island, is uproarious and endlessly endearing, one of the most acute and affectionate portrayals of England in all its glorious eccentricity ever written. Two decades later, he set out again to rediscover that country, and the result is The Road to Little Dribbling. Nothing is funnier than Bill Bryson on the road—prepare for the total joy and multiple episodes of unseemly laughter.

“Why Do They Keep Coming to this Doctor?…” (Who admits to curing no one)

Dear Friend, I’ve got to tell you something I’ve never said out loud. But, what I’m going to tell you makes so much sense that you’ll probably get mad that no one told you this before. I’ve been a doctor in this town for 3 years. And, to this day, I’ve never cured anyone. You may think the word would get around and no one would come to me anymore. The opposite is true. The more people who understand, the more people come to see me. Several times a day, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. And, we get terrific results! That’s why our office is filled with people who have found help nowhere else. Here’s my story… “At the time, I’m an active, happy ten year old, and life is good. But then, it happens… I develop a painful type of headache known as ‘migraines.’ In my case it comes on suddenly. On a weekly basis I’m getting at least one migraine with pain so bad I have to go in a dark room, with no sounds, and pray when I wake up the pain is gone. The throbbing pain sometimes is so bad I can’t even think. I’m afraid I’ll do badly in school, be unable to do sports, and lose friends if the disability continues. After trying medication (one of the only options, according to the doctor) my parents and I decide against it. But, there’s more… A family friend convinces my family and me to give his doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then ‘corrects’ my spine. The correction doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and shortly afterwards, my migraines disappear. Oh, did I mention this doctor is a chiropractor? Chiropractic works so well for me, and I’m so impressed with the other ‘miracles’ I see in his office, I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. And that’s how it happened!”

Resting in our relaxation room helps adjustments last longer. For the last 3 years, people from Delray Beach and the surrounding areas have come to see me with: • Headaches/Migraines • Fibromyalgia • Vertigo/Dizziness • Chronic fatigue • Neck Pain • Shoulder/Arm Pain • Backaches • Numbness In Limbs • Athletic Injuries to name a few… Here’s some of your neighbors success stories: “Finally I found relief for the neck and shoulder pain I have been dealing with for about a year.” (Jarrod White, Delray Beach, FL) “This is the best thing I have ever done for my body!” (Rosanne Patsy, Delray Beach, FL) Here’s the most important thing I have to say. Your body is made to heal itself, and it does that best when it’s free of nerve interference. So, as much as I’d like the credit, I can’t take it. I’ve never healed anyone of anything. I analyze the nervous system and the spine and perform specific spinal adjustments to remove nerve pressure. The body responds, and often it heals itself once that nerve interference is removed.

Exciting Offer - Look, I know you’re smart. You want to get to the cause of your problems, and not just cover them up with drugs. When you are one of the first 20 people to call and schedule a new patient exam (before December 31st, 2015) you’ll receive the entire exam for $27. That includes x-rays, paraspinal thermal imaging, postural analysis… and there’s no hidden fees. But, call right away because we expect to be flooded with calls as this exam normally costs $170. Again, there’s only 20 of these slots available, so don’t miss out. (The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for any other service, examination, or treatment that is performed within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee examination, or treatment.). Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee! Our office is called Schrier Family Chiropractic and it is at 315 N.E 2nd Ave., (located in Pineapple Grove). Our phone number is 561-4452648. Call Pam or me today for an appointment. We can help. Thank you. -Elan Schrier, D.C. P.S. All people respond differently to care. We never promise a cure, but we do promise to do our best.

travel ║ U.S. Virgin Islands

By LISA MARIE

The Unbelievable U.S. Virgin Islands!!!

{

1,100 miles away lies an American tropical getaway. The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly the Danish West Indies were sold to the U.S. by Denmark in 1916. They are currently an organized, unincorporated United States territory in the Caribbean, therefore requiring no passport to travel.

The islands consist of three main islands; Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, along with many other surrounding smaller islands. Traveling to St. Thomas or St. Croix is not as expensive as you might think. Spirit Airlines offer direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas for about $200 round trip or American Airlines from Miami for about $300. With a steady temperature averaging 80 degrees and white sandy beaches on turquoise blue water, the USVI are a place not to be missed. Each of the islands is unique. St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the three, giving the feeling that it’s the largest; it’s not, St. Croix is, although it is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas offers its visitors a huge array of attractions from churches, museums, classic island architecture and shopping. Their ethnic diversity offers diners an array of eating experiences to bring those taste buds alive. Accommodation selection is pretty vast too. You can choose from 5 star all inclusive hotels like The Ritz-Carlton to colorful and pic58 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

turesque Bed & Breakfast’s such as The Home of the Tropics. Now let us island hop to St John. From Red Hook, St. Thomas it is a short 1520 minute ferry ride and from Charlotte Amalie will take around 45 minutes. If you hired a car while on St. Thomas you can take one of the car barges traveling from Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John. For more information on ferry times and prices visit www.vinow.com/stjohn/getting_there/. St. John is the smallest of the three islands and nearly two-thirds of it is a national park. There you can take a 2 or 3 hour National Park guided tour to experience this paradise of sub-tropical forests, hundreds of species of plants, including bay rum trees and orchids and lots of tropical birds. If a guided tour is not for you, visit www.stjohnusvi.com for all the information needed to check out this island on your own. St. John is also renowned as a ‘reader’s paradise’ with its spectacular secluded beaches, turquoise waters, colorful coral and tropical fish. Even though this is the smallest island there is still a vast

array of accommodations to choose from. Luxury resorts, condos, cottages, guest houses and the world’s leading eco-resorts and campgrounds. Now we are heading to St. Croix, the largest of the USVI. Unfortunately there are no ferries offered to St. Croix from either St. Thomas or St. John. The best option is to fly from St. Thomas from about $85 round trip on www.seaborneairlines. co. Sciatica…

Exploring Cutting Edge Treatments and Addressing Misconceptions

{

By Dr. John Conde

A shocking 80 % of all Americans will experience low back pain at some point in their life. Its epidemic status continues to grow and sufferers seek the most cutting edge approaches to not only ensuring relief but also restoring function.

Quite often individuals may also develop associated thigh or lower leg pain termed sciatica. The clinical term sciatica requires clarification. Sciatica simply means “pain in the leg”. It does not mean that the sciatic nerve has been “pinched”. In fact, the sciatic nerve is not involved in most cases of thigh or gluteal pain because it does not supply sensation from this area.

What Is The Cause Of Sciatica? Sciatica can be caused by irritation or trauma to nerve roots within the spinal canal or to peripheral nerves outside of the canal anywhere from the pelvis to the lower leg. Space occupying lesions within the spinal canal such as a bone spur, disc herniation, congenitally narrow canal, infection, metastasis, or mass can be the causative agent. Outside of the canal we find the instigators to be a femur head fracture, incorrectly placed intra-muscular injection, fixation of the sacroiliac joint, and primary bone cancer of the pelvis. The two most common and least diagnosed causes are facet joint syndrome and piriformis contracture. Facet joints help to guide motion of the spine letting us bend forward and back and side to side. They also relieve some of the weight bearing burden of the rest of the spine. Quite often they are irritated due to an injury, arthritis, or misalignment. This irritation produces referred pain into the gluteal region and back of the thigh. 60 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Piriformis contracture occurs when the piriformis muscle tightens and shortens for a prolonged period of time compressing peripheral nerves that provide sensation from the gluteal region and thigh. The tightening can occur due to repetitive use such as is seen in runners and tennis players, injury, and misalignment of the pelvis. The pain pattern is typically represented as severe buttock pain and mild thigh pain.

How Is It Diagnosed? A comprehensive neurological and orthopedic examination should be performed checking reflexes, strength, sensation, posture, gait, muscle tone, and evaluating pain production from different positions. X-rays help to narrow down the diagnosis. Further imaging studies such as MRI and CT should only be necessary after a lack of improvement from conservative treatment or a progression of symptoms.

Cutting Edge, Conservative Treatments The treatment of sciatica is aimed at removing the cause and restoring proper function to the area. Cutting edge maneuvers such as eccentric fast stretching and cross cord inhibition focus on reducing tension in tightened and shortened muscle and joint capsules. Chiropractic manipulations focus on removing the irritation and restoring proper motion in the facet joints. Flexiondistraction therapy helps to reposition some of the herniated material and increase the overall health of the disc. Neurophysiologic rehabilitation of the part of the brain that directly controls the tone of the deep spinal muscles helps to create stability in the spine. Lastly, a proper nutritional assessment should be made to promote an anti-inflammatory diet. Here we go again, new technology, better…faster…stronger…

{

By Thomas C. Balshi, M.D.

Here is an update on a new advancement in laser aesthetic medicine. A new procedure called the “Triniti™”. It involves advancements in accelerated skin repair and rejuvenation.

The complete skin program for immediate, visible and long lasting results, Triniti™ is a non-surgical “laser” treatment in three steps, performed sequentially, during the same office visit! With the Triniti™ skin program, color correction, and wrinkle treatment can all be achieved in a single session, helping you achieve total facial renewal in just 3 treatment sessions. The Trinity Complex combines 3 of today’s most effective technologies through the Syneron laser system. 1. FotoFacial RF® Color Correction improves spider veins, age spots, uneven skin tone and sun-damaged skin. 2. Refirme™ wrinkle reduction targets telltale signs of aging, including: sagginess under the eyes, saggy brow lines, and nasolabial folds. It stimulates long term collagen synthesis as well as the tightening of existing collagen fibers, giving an immediate firmed appearance. 3. Matrix IR™ fractional for wrinkles resolves moderate wrinkles and skin texture becomes smoother. The Matrix IR fractional applicator delivers a form of microbeams creating a matrix of thermal bands with more focused energy to target zones, promoting fast collagen renewal and remodeling for a smoother glowing skin appearance. Here is how the Triniti™Complex works: The 3 treatment technologies of the Triniti™Complex- FotoFacial RF, Refirme and Matrix IR - feature the revolutionary elōs technology. An incredible combination of Dual-Polar Radio Frequency and Light/Laser energies which precisely heat tissue within the targeted treatment area stimulate rejuvenation within the skin. The treatment is based on the premise that 62 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

synergistic activity between the two different forms of energy occurs. The dual-polar radio frequency component enables the use of lower levels of the optical diode laser component, reducing the risk from optical energy and improving the results across all types of skin color. The diode laser component is believed to drive the dual-polar radio frequency energy to concentrate where the optical energy has selectively heated the target, therefore, allowing one to selectively concentrate on deeper lines and wrinkles. Wrinkle treatment with elōs technology,

enables you to comfortably achieve a more youthful appearance with virtually ZERO downtime. It’s fast, effective and strives to improve color, texture, pore size and wrinkles for full face rejuvenation. Every medical discipline covets the newest “rocket science” that will bring thrills to their patients. In the field of Dermatology, Triniti™ screams success. Dr. Thomas C. health & beauty ║ Your Dental Health

You’ve lost a tooth – now what?

{

BY Craig Spodak, DMD, PA

Dental implants - a popular for missing or failing teeth.

Tooth loss is a common problem that you have a good chance of experiencing at some point in your life, unfortunately. Whether you lose a tooth from cavities, severe gum disease, accidental damage or other reasons, the loss of a single tooth or multiple teeth can have dramatic and lasting effects on your smile and your ability to chew if not dealt with in a timely manner. Without replacing the tooth, your smile could look unsightly or crooked, in addition to creating further problems for the future. Teeth adjacent to a space where a tooth has been lost often tend to shift or move into that space. This movement leads to further instability among neighboring teeth, and soon enough your bite will suffer because the teeth have become misaligned. Additionally, teeth in the opposing jaw will often begin to “grow” further up or down as it looks to make contact with a neighboring tooth. If no tooth is encountered, the gum tissue in the area of the lost tooth may become the surrogate, which is a match that can lead to constant discomfort or a persistent sore spot. To make matters worse, the jawbone where the root of the missing tooth used to sit is no longer stimulated during chewing, and it will shrink away in a process known as “resorption.” Once jawbone density is lost, it’s difficult to regain, regardless if you undergo sophisticated bone grafting techniques. So what do you do when you lose a tooth? Replace it! There are a few different options for replacing missing teeth – including a fixed bridge or removable partial denture – but the best solution for managing gum tissue architecture, jawbone strength and aesthetics is dental implants. The most common option in dentistry for tooth replacement used to be a “fixed bridge,” which is when the teeth on either side of the space were shaved down and a dental 64 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

bridge that had a fake tooth in the middle was cemented over them. This addressed the problem of teeth shifting, as well as keeping aesthetics in line. However, because chewing forces would now be distributed to the bone of the neighboring teeth, the resorption process would often continue and, over time, create a defect in the bone and gums in that area. For those who are missing the majority or all of their teeth, or who didn’t opt for the fixed bridge, removable partial or full dentures are another option. This, unfortunately, still does not solve the problem of lost roots and bone resorption. Dentures also tend to be uncomfortable and also make it difficult to speak or chew effectively, not to mention smiling with confidence! Most dental professionals would agree that replacing a missing (or soon to be missing) tooth or teeth with dental implant supported crowns or bridges is the best option. A dental implant is like an artificial tooth implanted in the jawbone that is capable of supporting one or more teeth. You no longer need to rely on neighboring teeth to support either a fixed or a removable bridge, or alter perfectly healthy teeth to accommodate the replacement of one, and implants help to preserve the strength of the underlying jawbone. So how do you know you might need a dental implant? If you have lingering, unprovoked (not in response to eating or drinking) pain, it’s possible your tooth may need to be removed and replaced with a dental implant. In some cases, a dental implant can be surgically inserted the same day the offending tooth is removed. This is known as “immediate implant placement” and a temporary crown can sometimes be attached to the implant so the patient never has to have a gap in their smile. In situations where there is considerable bone loss around the failing tooth root or

you’ve suffered a traumatic injury, “delayed implant placement” is the best option. In these instances, it’s common to have a bone graft at the site of the extracted tooth to help rebuild the volume of the bone that’s needed for future implant placement. This could occur a few months later, after the bone graft has healed, but many times a temporary device can be worn until the implant crown is placed so your smile stays intact. Regardless of the cause, replacing missing or failing teeth with dental implants as early as possible will give you the best chance for a successful and aesthetically-pleasing outcome. You want to reduce or eliminate the risk of having teeth shift, which will help to avoid future dental problems and keep you smiling straight! Holiday De-Fluffing 101 By Ashley Sica

Feeling a little fluffy from the holiday overload? Wondering about where to start on those New Year’s Resolutions? Don’t worry, I can assure you’re not pondering this one alone. Holiday parties, workplace cookies and extra cocktails can all leave you feeling thick, sluggish and unmotivated. However, if you take note and follow these pointers, better in no time!

The first and most important component of getting back on track is to have a “fitness” plan and to set a goal for yourself. Setting a fitness plan could be as simple as saying you’re going to get to the gym 3x per week. It’s all about mapping out where you are going and what you are going to do in order to achieve your goal. Having a “specific” goal will allow you to focus on training and give you extra motivation to exercise. It’s a lot easier to make it to the finish line if you have an attainable goal in sight. Whatever this goal may be, write it down and put it somewhere where you will be reminded of it everyday. Committing your goal to paper and seeing the written words are more powerful than just having a thought or talking about it. Next order of business would be for you to get your eating in check! I highly recommend keeping a daily food log of exactly everything that you are consuming…the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. A successful food log would ideally consist of 5-6 meals per day spaced 2-3 hours apart with a proper mix of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and of course lots of veggies. Skip anything that is processed and stick to all homemade prepared meals (yes, with preparation and thought…you can do it!). The other nutrition component is water! Your body can not properly burn fat if it is dehydrated. It’s such a simple thing many people don’t do. Aim for 1oz of water per pound of bodyweight. Drinking proper amounts of water will also help to keep you feeling full, flush 66 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

out toxins and help de-bloat you faster than you may realize. So get out that gallon and start your chuggin! The last step to de-fluffing is performing the right type of workouts for YOUR body. However, regardless of your body type resistance training has to be done…period. Resistance training is essential to fat burning and your metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn at rest. Ladies, I promise you don’t have to look like she-man to get the same affects nor will you get bulky from resistance training. It gives your body the “shape” most are looking to achieve. A lot of people think cardio alone will do this and that is the furthest thing from the truth. Although cardio has its time and place… resistance training is non-negotiable. You should aim to get in 3-4 sessions a week for optimal results. As far as cardio goes that will all depend on your fat loss goals. Consult with a training professional if you need clarification on which type of program would work best for you. If you follow these three principles you should be able to shed some holiday pounds and be able to start the New Year off on your best foot forward. My last piece of advice, don’t do the old…”I’ll start on Monday!” There is no better time to start than now! Come up with a plan, set a goal, clean up your eating, pick up some weights and get moving! You’ll be glad you did.

special feature ║ 2016 ideas

It’s a New Year tradition at Atlantic Ave Magazine to offer up new ideas for a new year.

The ideas are offered up in the spirit of creativity and with the hope that city leadership may act on a few, or at least get out of the way and encourage others to give it a try. We gather them throughout the year in a little notebook. Some of the ideas are our own, others come from our travels or from readers and friends. Enjoy and send us your thoughts. 1. Invest in the park surrounding Old School Square. The vision of a vibrant, well-designed and lightly programmed park was contained in the 2005 Parks Master Plan. It’s time we make it happen. Old School Square Park is our town square. It’s an investment in placemaking and primarily a landscape design project. Put the daggers away, engage the community in the design and make it magical.

2. Mix entrepreneurial start -ups with art at the Arts Warehouse. The CRA made a great move to grab the warehouse and it helped to spur Artist’s Alley. But it’s time to make something happen inside the warehouse and mixing art and entrepreneurs would make this project different and bring new businesses downtown. Entrepreneurs 70 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

would benefit from the exposure to artists and vice versa.

3. Consider a density bonus for work force housing downtown. The success of downtown Delray Beach is something to be proud of, but it has also priced many young professionals out of the market and that’s not cool or desirable. We need young professionals, those returning home after college and millennials to make keep our downtown fresh and to support local merchants year round. The new Land Development Regulations cap density at 30; that’s not enough to get any affordability in a red hot market. A promised bonus program seems to have been lost. Bring it back. 4. Make Congress Avenue a complete street. Experience shows us that once you invest in placemaking by calming traffic and designing places for people not just cars, investment, vibrancy and sustainability results. Just look at Atlantic Avenue and US 1. Congress can and should be Delray’s next great street. A complete street means landscaping, bike lanes, transit stops and pedestrian elements.

5. Support Saltwater Village. The Brewery can be the anchor of a cool artsy little nook. It can also be a catalyst for an expansion of charm to key neighborhoods outside the downtown area. 6. Review special event policies. Quality over quantity, for sure, but don’t put events out of business. They are important to the brand and to the community. The brand creates value--it’s why we see real estate listings in Boynton Beach reference the proximity to downtown Delray. 7. Commit to resilience. Make the city safe in what has become a very unpredictable world. Have the conversation.

8. Take another look at three year terms. Good candidates shouldn’t fear the two year term, but three years is too long to be stuck with a clunker. Longer terms don’t save money if you have the wrong people in office and it seems it doesn’t tamp down the politics either.

9. Bring back a real town hall meeting.

10. Create a Community Chest to fund worthy causes. 11. Crowd fund community projects. Use apps to fund small projects. Call it tactical urbanism or urban architecture, but you shouldn’t have to wait for government. 12. Bring a university downtown; even if it’s only for night classes.

13. Offer a Code Camp for kids. 14. Create a reasonable approval process. Weeks long. Not months and years long. Time is money for the investor and the city. Don’t allow the process to become insulting to applicants. Debate has a place. Then it’s time to get on with it.

15. Create a few car free days downtown. Not for special events but just for the experience. Allow golf carts, bikes and the trolley only.

16. Create a local StoryCorps. Capture the history before it’s forgotten. Historic preservation is more than just saving old buildings, it’s capturing and sharing the stories of our community.

17. Go back to the lecture series, review the highlights and actually implement the ideas brought here by thought leaders.

18. Bring back neighborhood pot luck dinners. A village becomes a village when people know each other. 19. Create a plan for economic development. Stick to it.

20. Have a community vision plan that talks about future generations and how we keep Delray sustainable.

21. Back Mark Baron’s vision for the stadium which calls for improvements to seating and world class facilities. 22. Create a talent bank for citizens interested in volunteering. Match those volunteers to the tremendous needs of our community. 23. Make Delray the plein air art capital of America. 24. Pitch a reality TV series featuring Delray.

25. Listen to all citizens not just the ones who show up at the mic. www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | January 2016 71

Let’s face it we’re living in a fast paced world. And in order to keep up we have to be nimble on our feet and minimalistic in our thinking.

It also helps to add exercise to a day that may consist of answering 200 emails, working 10-hours and then cooking dinner for the family. Annie Burke learned about the value of physical fitness when she was just a teen. After spending much of her life in foster homes Burke was 65 pounds overweight to qualify for a job as a police officer in Delray. Instead of walking away defeated she did a quick assessment of the situation and came up with a solution. “I knew I had to lose 65 pounds so I started running one block at a time. After seven months I was running five miles a day and it changed my life. I was accepted into the Police Academy in 1986.” Burke eventually broke the glass ceiling to become a Police Captain in the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department. But she never lost her desire to come up with solutions to help people with problems they couldn’t solve themselves. She just does it in a different way now. You could say her approach is more grounded and better suited for people of all ages and

career pursuits. Tall or short, introverts or extraverts, Burke helps everyone meet their ideal physical and mental state by supplying them with state-of-the-art running (or walking) shoes and all the equipment needed to run a marathon or chase a two-year-old. She started this lofty pursuit over a year ago on Atlantic Avenue by opening a popular, yet folksy running store called The Delray Beach Running Company. It is at this landmark building that one can get their gait checked on a treadmill with software called TEMPLO. This action packed experience will analyze your gait and make sure you get the right size (or model) shoe for running or walking.

But it’s not always about commerce at this intimate shop that’s a safe port in the storm of life. “It’s all about the customer here. I will spend hours with people showing them proper running form and they don’t need to buy anything. We care about our customers here.” You can bank on that. Burke gets phone calls, emails and Facebook messages that attest to her patience with clients to make sure they get the right equipment and shoes. “People are constantly thanking me and saying that they have never run pain free before coming here. That’s the thing that keeps me going.” And keeping this woman going is more a labor of love than a job. Each Saturday morning she is up at 3:30 am to put out 40 pounds of ice on tables at A1A North of Linton and in Highland Beach. It is there her running groups can grab a beverage or edible for their 6 am run that starts at her store. Her runs are free and open to all. “We have a run on Tuesday at 5:30am and at 6:30 at night, Wednesday night at 6:15 from Ben & Jerry’s (you get free ice cream after the run), Thursday at 6:30pm and every second Sunday is a ‘Fun Run’ from Salt Water Brewery at 4:30.” What Burke wants people to know is that you don’t have to be a runner to shop at her store (or join activities). “Over half of my customers are not athletes. It’s about comfort and health, not just running. When you wear the wrong shoes it can cause knee pain, hip and calf pain or it can inflame bunions. The human eye is only so good, but we have the software to make sure you get the right fit.” Just ask Robin Goldberg. “I brought a friend to DBRC who had a lot of pain running. Annie did a thorough evaluation of his gait and found him a shoe that’s perfect for him. Annie and her staff are knowledgeable about everything they sell and take time to understand each person’s unique needs. There is no better running store in south Florida.” Burke is also starting Custom Marathon Training Plans for all customers. Whether you have aspirations to run a half, full or ultra marathon Burke is ready to help. “Our interest is in their success. We want them to complete their marathon safely and smartly.” This ace runner is proud to announce she will be running in the 2016 Boston Marathon. That’s a far cry from her humble beginnings. “I grew in up foster care and lost three siblings to drug overdoses. I look at everything as a blessing.” So do those who find help through Burke’s mission and mantra to help others.

The moment you walk through the doors at PurLife Fitness Center, you will feel like you’re staying at a first class resort.

PurLife Fitness Center in Delray Beach has a large fitness facility with state-of-theart equipment that includes a luxurious salon, a high-tech studio for fitness classes and an organic juice bar with healthy snacks for their members. Although they just opened their doors in February of 2015, PurLife Fitness Center is already so successful that they are expanding, tripling their group fitness room, doubling the Gym Floor space and expanding the juice bar to include a Salad Bar restaurant with outside seating, ending up with a total of over 12,000 square feet with completion expected in late February. Travis Tomko, managing partner of PurLife Fitness Center attributes the success to filling the need in the town of Delray Beach for a luxury style fitness center that doesn’t break the bank. “I have been involved with many fitness facilities and noticed the lack of a luxury

type facility in Delray Beach. I knew we could deliver a High-end five star hotel feel with a reasonable price,” said Travis, adding, “PurLife Fitness Center’s goal was to fill the gap between the low-budget gym and an uber expensive high-end facility, and I think we’ve done that. It is a great place to be!” Members can’t help but feel right at home with the welcoming fitness staff and highly experienced personal trainers, all encouraging them to look their healthiest and feel their best. From one-on-one personal training and group fitness classes to healthy eating at the Organic juice bar and pampering

at the luxury salon, PurLife offers everything to get you in the best shape of your life. As a former professional wrestler, the local owner had that goal in mind when opening the fitness center. “As a pro athlete, I traveled around the world and in doing so I worked out in fitness centers in every major city. I took notes on what I thought was unique and I built PurLife from the ground up,” said Travis. What makes the local fitness center unique is their emphasis on one-on-one instruction; all of their personal trainers are very experienced and have degrees in the exercise science field. They specialize in all types of fitness goals, from losing a few pounds to assisting with cervical spinal issues. “There are a lot of fitness centers out there, but we work because every member gets a fitness evaluation from a personal trainer when they join. Giving them a starting point with metrics so that they are not spinning their wheels, unsure if they have made progress or not. A lot of times when people make New Year’s Resolutions, they fail to put a plan into action, and without a plan your setting yourself up for failure. Here at PurLife we help you reach your goal by listening to what you want, and devising a plan to get you there; it’s real simple and ultimately fundamental,” said Travis. The Personal Training System at PurLife Fitness is designed as an organized set of checks and balances to ensure clients reach an optimal level of fitness and athleticism. They start off by addressing function and stability issues. Then, the program bridges the gap between aesthetics and performance, by shedding body fat and promoting overall wellness. Dina Branham is a woman with a vision. Though she’s been in the real estate business for 13 years, this Broker/Owner/ Realtor recently opened her own brokerage, Deluxe Properties in Delray Beach.

changes the client experience but it is a philosophy everyone in my office has. I call it, ‘Upgrading from the Standard.’” “Why not make the home buying experience the same as if you were planning a vacation. We like to remove the stress and treat our clients like guests. We think of ourselves as a Boutique Real Estate Brokerage with Concierge Service Attention.” If you say the word “sales” to Dina she will acknowledge the concept but not the connotation. “Yes, we are sales people, but not in the essence of the traditional sales-

person. Salespeople are about numbers. I am someone who is in the customer service business. It’s more about my relationship with the client and helping them make a very important decision.” As a matter of fact Dina thinks that high pressure sales is not becoming to her, or to those on her concierge real estate team. Instead she describes herself as honest, humble and someone who enjoys helping others. “Recently I was at a restaurant and there was a long wait for a table. A couple standing nearby asked me if I knew of another restau-

rant they could eat at. My immediate reaction was to pick up my phone and get them a reservation somewhere else. It turned out they were in town to sell their father’s house who had recently passed away. They gave me the listing and I ended up selling it for them. I not only sold the house for them but I assisted them in the entire process. I called the movers, packed up the contents, and had the house cleaned. I always go that extra step to help others.” Going that extra mile is what has made Dina so successful. The business and finance major from University of Minnesota worked in customer service for a skincare industry in Beverly Hills, and managed offices’ and finance departments in the entertainment industry. She worked with high level executives at Island Records and at Warner Brothers she was a personal assistant to music royalty, Quincy Jones’s production company. “I have worked with celebrities and high level business executives in my career, but I know the importance of treating all people with respect and professionalism.” Dina’s versatility and work ethic makes her the perfect person to help those looking to rent a condo, apartment or sell property (and estates) worth millions of dollars. Her team’s specialty is not based on a price point, but rather on the client’s needs. “Dina sold an extremely difficult condo for me. Not only did she handle the removal of all its contents, she directed the repainting and carpet cleaning. I really don’t think anyone else could have sold this unit for me. She was professional and pleasant. I highly recommend her.” There’s another perk to doing business with this boutique concierge-oriented real estate company, and it’s not just the customized service and excellent follow through. “We do more and charge less. We don’t charge transaction fees that most real estate companies do, and because we’re a small company I have the ability to negotiate certain things.” Mr. Benjamin found that out firsthand. “My fiancé and I were looking for a home and had very specific parameters for what we wanted. Dina not only helped us find great listings, but she negotiated excellent deals on places that were originally out of our price range. She really knew the area and shared fun things for us to do. I highly recommend Dina to anyone looking in the real estate market!” Dina founded her new company on integrity and honesty, adhering to the Golden Rule of life: “I like to treat others the way I liked to be treated.” DELUXE PROPERTIES Dina L Branham Broker / Owner / Realtor 561.241.0950 Cell | 561.501.0175 Office 809 George Bush Boulevard | Delray Beach, FL 33483 www.DeluxeDelray.com | Dina@DeluxeDelray.com

If you ask Razzy Jacobs what he’s selling, he’ll tell you time. Though most of us don’t think of a cleaning service as one that sells hours or days, in his mind it’s one of the most precious things we have. And he is sure most of us don’t want to squander our time just as we wouldn’t want to squander our money.

Does it look SPARKLING CLEAN ? 80 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

“We sell you time by cleaning your place. We take this chore off your mind so you can use that time towards something else. If we clean your house perfectly from top to bottom, then you can use that time to improve the quality of your life or your career,” said the self-professed workaholic. Razzy takes a certain pride in the cleaning empire that he has built from scratch. He started out in the hospitality industry and then went into the real estate business. While flipping properties he was in charge of cleaning those properties. As business grew he had more houses to clean, which meant he had to recruit more people to help him complete this time consuming task. That’s when the light bulb went off in his

brain. “I kept asking for help from my friends at the restaurant where I worked. That’s when I started a cleaning service, but not just any cleaning service – the best one in Palm Beach and Broward County.” If you listen to the regimentation and scientific logic to Razzy’s business model you realize how he has scaled a mountain in the cleaning business in such a short period of time. Razzy only hires women with professional cleaning experience. They must be clean, neatly dressed, have no visible tattoos and not smoke. They must also pass a very rigorous background check and have a stellar work ethic. Employees are also firmly educated about the importance of honesty and integrity on

the job (and in life) and are expected to follow his lead. “We don’t do surface cleaning, we do deep cleaning. We are thorough and after we dust a surface, we move the item and clean that as well. We make sure that picture frames are cleaned (not just dusted in place), sliding door tracks are cleaned, dirt and dust is removed from the top of ceiling fans, window frames are cleaned, baseboards, bathroom light fixtures and everywhere else you can imagine is also cleaned.” You won’t find a dust mite-filled baseboard after his crew leaves your home (or office) and you won’t find anything missing as well. “We are not a big franchise (or corporation) and believe in making sure our quality and consistency of service is always firmly in place. When someone thinks of a cleaning service, then 24/7 Perfect Cleaning is what they’ll hear about immediately. There’s a lot of peace of mind you get when you are guaranteed the same quality and consistency all the time. If my girls are on time, they’re late. When they come early, than that’s on time for me” Razzy is also constantly keeping in touch with his clients to make sure their greatest (or minor) cleaning tasks have been performed. He wants to make sure that - like an antique clock - his business and employees work like a charm. “We hired 24/7 Perfect Cleaning to clean our salon and they are amazing. They’re also reliable and always on time. When the girls are here (early in the morning), Razzy is always in contact with us. If we have something different that needs cleaning, all we do is send a text or a picture of the item and they clean it for us. Razzy is hard working and always there to make sure everything is perfect,” said Ariel Jarvis, Manager of One Aveda Salon in East Delray Beach.

We love to clean Woo Creative AT 135 E Atlantic Ave Delray Beach

Perfection is something that motivates Razzy. When comparing his cleaning service – that does residential cleaning, housekeeping and commercial cleaning – he thinks fivestars. “I make sure my girls know what to do, and I speak to my clients to find out exactly what they want. I have a good memory and I always remember what clients say is important to them. It’s also important that my staff smiles and is always professional.” If you ask Kilburn Sherman, Managing Director at SJO Worldwide, LLC he’ll agree that Razzy and his team are top notch. It’s not just hyperbole. “24/7 Perfect Cleaning has exceeded all expectations with regards to managing the cleanliness of our office. They are friendly, show up on time, are trustworthy, and most importantly they leave our office spotless. Razzy has built an incredible team and I wouldn’t trust anyone else to manage the cleaning of our office.” There’s a saying that excellence comes from the top. That’s why Razzy Jacobs maintains his standards in the stratosphere so

that 24/7 Perfect Cleaning can keep their clients happy at all times!

That scenario is real – and one that can be yours – if you’re in the market for an oceanfront home that TLC once called ‘one of the four top oceanfront properties in South Florida.’ There’s no denying that living large with the ocean in your backyard, a spiral staircase and a theatre is a dream of many. That’s why Tauriello & Company Real Estate has the listing for this estate that sits just North of Linton Blvd in a small enclave of just seven homes. There are five bedrooms, towering ceilings, a mahogany staircase, large game room, private elevator and three balconies. If this sprawling 6,980 square-foot Delray estate is not what you are looking for then Tauriello & Company Real Estate has other options for you. That’s their job – and their passion. Selling real estate of all sizes and shapes is their raison d’être (reason for being). Though many of their clients like waterfront homes they have plenty of other options that range from large homes to small ones with condos and villas as well. Things are going so well for T&C Real Estate that they recently purchased more space to accommodate a larger staff to help clients (that includes buyers and sellers). “We have a full-time marketing director, front desk receptionist, office administrator and executive management team,” said Sue, a Realtor and Certified Real Estate Broker with 36 years of experience. But that history was the warm up for T&C Real Estate’s stellar performance in Delray. They have a dedicated staff, real estate sales of over $100 million a year and a marriage (to CFO Dan) that has lasted 46 years. They also just co-brokered a $21.76 million mansion in Palm Beach that was heralded as one of the largest sales in the area. The four-bedroom lakefront estate has a two-bedroom garage apartment and 11,365-square-feet of living space. T&C Real Estate agent involved was Linda Welch.

But not everyone wants (or needs) an estate. “We accommodate any buyer, not just ones looking to spend over $1 million. We’re an upscale boutique office offering individualized service,” said Sue. Chad Cooper, a businessman and performance coach has seen Tauriello’s real estate professionalism close up. “When I decided to move to Florida I was told to call Sue Tauriello. Let’s face it, a youthful attitude and youthful thinking are important qualities in maintaining a happy life. But often we are judged on our physical appearance (for better or worse).

That’s why Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Thomas Tzikas has spent his adult life perfecting the art of restoring a youthful appearance to his patients. His efforts have been greatly rewarded. He has a booming comprehensive center for facial and neck rejuvenation; he’s published his state-of-the-art procedures in prestigious medical journals and has patients fly in from all parts of the globe. “I am recognized internationally as

Thomas L.Tzikas, M.D.

a leading authority on volume restoration with fat grafting, using the patient’s own fat. As people age they lose fullness in the face and the bones get thinner. By adding fat to the face you add a softness (and padding under the skin) to look like a younger version of yourself,” said the Ivy League educated surgeon. Dr. Tzikas specializes in so many noninvasive procedures (and surgical facelifts) that re-sculpt the face and neck to its

original luster that the office will be doubling in size. They are also adding more long-term suites so patients from out of town can spend time recuperating in a private medically supervised environment. The reason that people come from as far away as Japan and Australia to see Dr. Tzikas is that he understands the dynamics and structure of the natural aging process of the face and neck. He also understands patients’ fears of this process. “You

don’t want to look like someone different, you want to look refreshed without having the appearance of being pulled and stretched. People don’t want to look like some of the overdone celebrities whose faces look unnatural.” As a way of guaranteeing that the patient looks natural and refreshed Dr. Tzikas asks them to bring in a few pictures of themselves when they were young. This gives the doctor a framework to decide how much volume should be added to restore the face to its youthful appearance. “Fat grafting is the most natural way to take years off the face. This soft tissue facial volume enhancement adds a three dimensional component. To achieve facial beauty you need fullness, softness, symmetry and proper proportion.” As most of us know, balancing the components of beauty, whether with a surgical facelift or minimally invasive fat grafting, is an art form. We’ve seen celebrities with too much volume (chipmunk cheeks) and others who look like their faces have been erased from existence (to the dismay of their fans). That is exactly what Dr. Tzikas wants to avoid. “I am here to help the patient decide what procedure suits them the best. I gently guide them – and don’t push them – because less is always better. I take a conservative approach.” Because his approach is always geared toward the patients’ needs and desires, the results are impeccable. “Dr. Tzikas is a true artist and fat/filler sculptor. He has good taste, a sense of beauty and understands what his patients want. I trust him with my face. He is one-of-a-kind, charming and an amazing plastic surgeon. His office staff is professional, responsive and caring,” said one patient. There’s other exciting news at this modern accredited surgical office, the addition of facial plastic and head and neck surgeon Dr. Miguel Mascaró. Dr. Mascaró has a dual fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as Hair Restoration and Scalp Surgery. His credentials in the area of head and neck surgery are impeccable and his state-of-the-art Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplants guarantee natural looking hair restoration. “Our SmartGraft System is much more advanced (and less invasive) than the traditional hair transplants that left scars and marks on the scalp. This system lets us take individual hair follicles systemati-

cally, instead of the old way of taking an entire strip. We can take follicles and put them anywhere we need them. There is less down time and the result is more natural looking hair,” said Dr. Mascaró, who also does Face Lifts, Lipografting, Brow lifts, Rhinoplasty, non-invasive Facial injectables and other procedures. This new hair transplant system works well for both men and women. It’s great for people with an active busy lifestyles; you can go back to work quickly. The great advantage of SmartGraft is that it is for anyone with hair loss or thinning hair. SmartGraft can also be used to fill in facial hair for men who have patchiness on the face. Another treatment for hair loss that Dr. Mascaró specializes in separates the platelets from the blood and injects them into the scalp for healing. “We can do hair restoration in one to three sessions and restore hair that won’t fall out. Basically, we take blood from the patient and separate it to get the platelet rich plasma and inject it into the scalp. In two treatments, that are two months apart, we have happy patients with richer fuller hair.”

Dr. Mascaró also performs cosmetic facial plastic surgery, non-surgical cheek and neck lifts (that are minimally invasive) and other procedures to make you look young and healthy. “There are different surgical procedures and techniques that work on a variety of areas of the face and neck. Each person gets a customized treatment protocol.” Dr. Thomas Tzikas and Dr. Miguel Mascaró Tzikas Facial Plastic Surgery Center 526 SE 5th Ave Delray Beach, FL 33483 (561) 330-9500 info@Tzikasmd.com

over a decade to hit upon these stylized often multi panel overheads of the beach that allowed him to draw on his interest in both the abstract and figurative. “To be honest I did not intend to really sell them at first but the response was instanta-

neous and overwhelming and to my surprise I am painting as much as I ever did.’ Taking over an existing frame shop on the busiest section of Atlantic Ave., Delray Art and Framing was born in 2006. Akemi (or ‘Amy’ for short) supervises the vast array of custom moldings as well as the gallery which showcases work with a sophisticated ‘coastal’ sensibility. “As if by fate one of our first customers was the photographer Matthew Vought whose ‘Sailboat’ print we now publish. I thought it possessed exactly the special quality my husband and I were searching for.” “Ami has a great eye. I contacted Matt and asked him if I might enlarge it and luckily he said ‘yes’.” The print went on to be a phenomenon for the gallery who routinely ship it all over the country and Europe. Most recently they began representing Karen O’Neill’s work. O’Neill’s stunning aerial photographs already had a rapidly growing reputation. “We were lucky to be able to convince her to allow us to represent her as well as her husband Roger’s elegant hand crafted minimalist frames that are an integral part of her work.”

Davis continues: “Another important feature is our ability to customize large format prints to fit our clients walls. We frequently digitally superimpose the art over a cell phone photo of the wall in question which helps visualize how something will actually look but we will also bring multiple pieces to the client’s home to help them make just the right choices.” Most recently the couple have been working on creating a line of Davis themed products including ties and beach towels. Davis is excited by the response. “They have been a big hit as they make great gifts as well as cool vacation keepsakes. We have had some interest from major chains but we like to keep things local for now” Last April DelrayART reallocated to Pineapple Grove where they almost doubled their gallery space. “Of course a big part of our business remains the custom framing. We have a huge selection of moldings and a terrific staff to help customers find just the right one” says Davis. “We love the Grove!” Ami exclaims. “The gallery has such a relaxed vibe we don’t want to leave at the end of the day… DelrayART and Frame 151 NE 2ND Ave. 5612780746 www.delrayart.com

A Holistic Approach to

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

Optimal Health “Everyone tells me how great I look for my age, but I don’t feel great inside.” Celeste did look great, either from her modelesque figure, breast implants, Botox, or the combination of all three. Looking at her new patient questionnaire, however, I had to agree, she wasn’t as healthy as she looked. Celeste continued, “My friend Jena raves about you and handed me one of your brochures. She said you made her feel twenty years younger. I want to get what she’s getting!” “Patient-to-patient referral has always been my best source of new patients, but rather than ‘selling the same program’ of tests, supplements, and hormones to everybody, whether they need it or not, I do what a board-certified physician is trained to do, I evaluate each patient individually. Tell me, if there was a miracle tonight, what would be different tomorrow?” “How about tonight? I’d sleep. It seems that I’m up at 3:15 like clockwork every morning to pee, and then I can’t get back to sleep until hours later. And when I wake up for real, I’m destroyed.” “God created night then day; night came first because it’s so important. I want you to wake up fully refreshed, anticipating your day.” “How can I look forward to things when my clothes don’t fit, I need to use hair extensions and acrylics, everything I eat bloats me to where I’m 5-months pregnant, and my girlfriends have more libido towards my husband than I do?” Luckily, not only do I have 80+ minutes to spend with new patients, I also had a box of tissues to hand to Celeste. “All of this is fixable. Instead of using ‘pharmacy’ (or ‘green pharmacy’ of vitamins and hormones) to cover up your symptoms, I prefer a Functional Medicine approach to make your body work properly, the way it did in your 20’s.” “Just up to a few years ago, I was able to eat great tasting food without running to the bathroom, drink champagne at charity events, and still be able to play tennis the next day. Now I’m just spent.” “I’ve seen all this before, and I’m confident we can get you back to optimum health. Let’s finish off our assessment. Besides my history and physical exam, there are some tests I need. Even though you have a concierge physician who did a screening panel, I need to look in depth at your adrenals, thyroid, and other hormones. Food allergies and dysbiosis (bad bacteria in your gut) can cause that bloating, and vitamin insufficiencies are common enough that we have to test for those as well.” “Anything we can start off now?” “Yes! I’ve been practicing this way for over a dozen years, and based upon what I know now, we can start with a little of everything: behavior changes, diet, exercise, supplements, stuff like that.” I continued, “You don’t have to change your life drastically, but little things will make a big difference.” “Like what?”

I do offer injections of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients.

“You already take baths, so we’re going to add Epsom Salts (to absorb magnesium through your skin) to make your skin less dry, your muscles less achy, and your sleep better. I have a ‘detox diet’ handout that mentions safe foods to eat, but if you just think ‘protein and colorful vegetables and fruits’, you’ll do okay. Before you leave, I’ll teach you a stretch that decreases that ‘pouch’ at your beltline, and there are a few vitamins that are so obvious for you to start with (but safe to take too).” “But what about that IV therapy that Jena told me about?” “When patients are really sick, or are trying to get the most optimal results yesterday, I do offer injections of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients. For example, iron injections rapidly help hair growth, brittle nails, fatigue, memory/concentration, and muscle cramps (restless legs).” Celeste’s testing did show causes for all her symptoms and on her second visit, a plan specific to her was put in place. Three months later, she was glowing and her visits were now spaced out to where she only had to be seen once every six months. “Next week you get to see both my husband and daughter. I just booked a family trip to tour the volcanoes in Hawaii. I need them to keep up with me.” Dr. Kenneth Woliner is a board-certified family medicine physician in private practice in Boca Raton. Workout For Life

The world is not a one dimensional place to Gerri Dalzell. For her it’s a colorful canvas filled with infinite possibilities. The Emmy Award Winning Art Director, Writer-Producer for a TV Network, Documentary Producer, Artist, Pilates and GYROTONIC® instructor just opened a fitness studio in Boca Raton.

But the biggest feather in her cap is that Dalzell is the founder and creator of PilateDa. Originally founded in Los Angeles PilateDa is a healing oasis for anyone who wants to get fit, lose weight, strengthen their core (or bones) and live a purposeful life. “I use my intuition to access what people need most and customize a workout that will serve them for their everyday life.” Though Gerri is certified in a multitude of modalities (ranging from Pilates to Gyrotonic®, Power Plate and Thai Yoga Massage) her method of healing has been an international one. “I have spent a lifetime cultivating intuitive living and traveling the world to work with renowned specialists,” said the Healing Practitioner. And the best part is that Dalzell has recentGet Stronger Faster

ly relocated to South Florida to impart her specialized training at the new Pilate-Da Studio on North Federal Highway in Boca Raton. There’s a lot to look forward to at this new studio – that is renowned for personalized instruction to stay fit, lose weight, build bones, rehabilitate injuries and live a happier and healthier existence. “Gerri is so much more than a Pilates instructor. She is a true healer and inspiration for anyone fortunate enough to practice with her. She has knowledge of power plate, GYROKINESIS® Method, circuit training and can vary your routine to fit your needs,” said one client. The studio has a healing vibration, art gallery and restorative quality. “The workouts at Pilate-Da are based on low impact modalities. This supports the body through vibration and Gerri Dalzell

spring resistance that will tone, strengthen and increase flexibility without undue impact on the joints. This kind of workout is critical for prevention of injuries as we age.” Pilate-Da offers private and group classes that get amazing results. Clients experience improved flexibility, stress relief, peace of mind and a zest for life that comes as a result of this diversified workout. According to clients (and Dalzell) the Pilate-Da workout not only transforms the body but injects a sense of invigoration rather than exhaustion. Some of the tools in her highly defined workout arsenal include Power Plate vibration technology designed by NASA. This helps clients regain strength, detoxify, prevent osteoporosis and enhance cardio endurance. “I use Power Plate and have never felt stronger Gyrotonic Method creates better form and body awareness

in my life. It keeps me in great shape and after 25 minutes you get the same benefit as running five miles. Cindy Crawford uses Power Plate as well,” said Dalzell. Pilate-Da also uses some of the same training methods that Roger Federer and celebrity golfers use. Called the GYROTONIC® Method, this form of exercise is made up of circular movements that flow together in rhythmic repetitions with synchronized breathing. Each movement flows into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression. These sequences create balance, efficiency, strength and flexibility without harming the body. Gerri also uses a Pilates Stick that tones the upper body and core, and strengthens the muscles. “It’s the closest thing to swimming without getting your hair wet. After one session you’ll see the difference in your body.” There’s a reason that Dalzell is so excited about her work - and her new move – it gets results. One client, who was 79-years-old and suffering from Parkinson’s disease when he started working with Dalzell has improved remarkably. “Bob started working with me once a week for six months because he had trouble walking and maintaining balance.

Cardo Trampoline is a fun way to get Cardio without putting any stress on your bones

He’s now playing paddle tennis. We’re not like any other Pilates studio, our approach is holistic and cutting edge.” You can bank on that statement. Pilate-Da is an environment that takes the body and mind on an infinite journey of health and wellness with disciplines from every corner of the world. It heightens the senses and heals whatever ails you – while helping turn back the clock on aging and injury. Not only that, how many other studios can

say they’ve worked with Victoria Secret models to help tone up their legs and boost their butts? The answer - not many. Come to Pilate-Da and experience the benefits yourself. Hi Season BY STEPHEN CHRISANTHUS

{

So the New Year is upon us and it is high season in the land of Delray. Snowbirds and visitors from all over have joined us for a few months of warm weather, sunshine and fun.

It’s the perfect time to stop in to your favorite spots to say “hi” to seasonal friends and see what’s new, or check out all the new restaurants, stores, and attractions that have popped up since you’ve been away. If you’re lucky enough to enjoy the Delray Beach lifestyle year round, no better way to start the year off then exploring some fresh places and meeting some new people. If you are looking for a little South Florida culture, coast into the Surf Museum. With tons of cool pictures, memorabilia and hours of interesting reading it’s a hip way to plunge into the history of one of our grooviest water sports. You’ll be surprised to see the West Coast wave riders have nothing on us! They also have monthly events and surfer movie showings. Another rocking joint you may not have discovered yet is the newly opened Jamnasium. Once a week The Fieldhouse at Old School Square is transformed into

a playground for awesome concerts, top notch comedy and any other creative show programmer and director Matthew Farmer can conjure up. Having only been open a month, it’s already becoming the venue for high caliber live music and performances in Delray Beach. Think you know all the restaurants in town, think again. With dozens on the Ave alone there is sure to be an owner you’ve yet to meet and a dish you’ve yet to try. Max’s Social House has been a hit this year, with its mouth-watering menu and impressive cocktails it has been an off the Ave variation to find your way to. Having hosted Bar Brawls last month, a weekly cocktail competition, it has won over the taste buds and festive hunger of the locals. Delray Beach boasts an extraordinary amount of non-chain stores and original

designers. So if you’re looking to hit the streets and make some fun purchases that mall and outlet shoppers won’t be sporting this spring, Pineapple Grove and Atlantic Avenue are the place to start. But don’t be afraid to venture out of downtown either. With Project Runway designer Amanda Perna creating her new line at the House of Perna a few miles north of Atlantic Ave, and the new Delray Place shopping center a few miles south, there are plenty of reasons to take a little drive for a lot of great shopping. So whether you are only here for a few months or you’re a Delray native, this year do yourself a favor and explore the ever evolving City and find some new places to stop in- and say hi. The Delray Beach Children’s Garden By LINDA BROWN Photo by melissa korman

This month, a few visionaries and their supporters will unveil a long standing dream.

The Delray Beach Children’s Garden, 137 SW 2nd Avenue in Delray Beach, sits a block and a half from bustling downtown Atlantic Avenue, but in many ways a world apart. A grand opening is set for January 3rd. The garden was a community effort with a variety of contributors. It was spearheaded by Shelly Zaks who serves as director of the project.

Her energy and drive enticed others to get involved. Some provided online donations, others provided sweat equity and their knowledge of plants. That makes the project extra special. The land is being generously leased for $10 a year by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. “The end result will provide our community with a sustainable, educational

and fun garden that will bring children together from all economic and cultural backgrounds to work, play, learn, explore and problem solve together in a lush, natural setting,” said Bruce Bastian, a volunteer. Delray Beach Children’s Garden was designed by children. Adults are helping children build it. People of all ages will benefit from the garden, the first of its kind in South Florida. The mission of Delray Beach Children’s Garden is nurturing eco-consciousness in children. After a long design and fundraising process, the group spent the holiday season raising another $3,000 online and through social media to complete the final stage of garden construction, including a pergola, a sandbox, and more plants and trees. The pergola at the garden entrance was important since it provides a growing surface for vines and creepers. Over time, organizers said it will provide shade and serve as a landmark in the garden for children and adults alike. Passing through a vine-covered pergola acts as a gateway, helping people become more aware that they are entering a different and living place, says Zaks. An old-fashioned sandbox was also contem-

plated as a place for kids to engage in creative play, allowing them to activate their imagination and their bodies together. That is something video games and most toys don’t do. Plants in the garden are designed to engage all of a child’s senses, not just some of them. Food plants, decorative plants, aromatic plants — and the butterflies and bees they attract — delight a child’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Plants also educate children and adults about the mysteries of nature and the life sciences: biology, botany, medicine, and more. In typical Delray fashion, the Children’s Garden is a true community project. In September, organizers conducted a design charrette soliciting input from citizens, including children and horticulturists. Many of Delray’s landmark community projects were designed and created as a result of the charrette process, which invites stakeholders from all walks of life to contribute ideas and suggestions. A panel of local children was convened to critique the designs that emerged from the event. The final plan includes a raised bed garden in the shape of a labyrinth, an aquaponics learning center with a pond and a pi-

rate ship, a banana forest, a sunflower habitat, a large outdoor classroom, butterfly, pollinator, herb and fragrance gardens, to name just some of the features. Other highlights include a hut built by Native Americans. The design was approved by the City of Delray Beach and ever since volunteers from the community have been meeting on Saturday mornings, working to build the garden. The growing Delray Beach Children’s Garden volunteer force consists of local church and synagogue members, students from Sea Star Initiative Waldorf School, St. Andrew’s high school and middle school students, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, a local 4-H club, Palm Beach County Master Gardeners and members of the Delray Beach Children’s Garden Meet-Up. The fundraising efforts will be ongoing to maintain the previously unimproved property. Shelly Zaks’ husband, CRA Commissioner Paul Zaks, has called the project an “amazing transformation.” To learn more or to be involved: visit http://www.delraybeachchildrensgarden. org/ or check out the group’s very active Facebook page. Volunteers are also welcome every Saturday morning.

Unlike some athletic child prodigies Turner kept her focus on her education, tennis and after-school theater productions. “I often did my homework at night from 10 pm to midnight. My friends were in the theater department and I liked the teacher, so I balanced it all together,” said the owner of Business Consultants of South Florida. In college Turner chose history as her major – even though it entailed reading a 400-page book a week. It was in history class that Turner learned about life in the abstract. “I really liked my history professor. We would have these discussions that forced us to look at both sides of an issue, think it through and then talk about it. I learned that there’s not always an easy solution and that there’s always two sides to a story. We also learned that history repeats itself.” Apparently it does in the world that Turner inhabits. She continues to play tennis (although not professionally) and continues to look at all sides of life as if it were a prism to be dissected. When not consulting with small businesses and non-profit organizations to strategize their growth and create goals, she is making a difference in the city of Delray Beach. “I am the new Chair of the Delray Beach Initiative. We are a volunteer-based community organization geared toward enhancing the lives of local children. We create events that encourage community engagement and raise awareness about the needs of local children.” This past year the DBI had three popular fundraisers – a Halloween party that raised funds for the Milagro Center, a Woodstock party that

106 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

benefited Family Promise and a Mardi Gras that enabled the Pine Grove Elementary School to purchase I-Pads for students. When she isn’t helping children (or clients) Turner might be found with her fingers in the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce pot. Her new title as Chair of the Ambassadors for the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce allows her to increase the visibility of new members and promote participation and retention in the chamber. She also cochairs a DBCC Leads Group. Though she’s a quiet force behind the wings of many an activity in Delray Beach, Turner has impressed those who know her. “The Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce does more than business together – we do life together. Allison ‘does life’ with us and has added so much to the Delray Chamber. As a consultant she has helped many in this community grow and strengthen their business. As a leader Allison motivates others through her LEADS Group, and as Ambassador Chair Allison has touched so many with her caring, warm heart,” said Lynn Van Lenten, Member Relations Coordinator of DBCC. Luxury Real Estate Specialist Jessica Rosato also sees the depth of character that Turner brings to the city. “Allison is a leader in the Delray Beach Community. Not only is she dedicated to helping her clients grow their businesses with creativity, passion, and successful branding and marketing strategies, she is dedicated to the livelihood of Delray Beach as a whole. Allison is always helping others achieve their goals and becoming their best. She is talented, confident and always professional,” said Rosato of Nestler Poletto Sotheby’s International Realty.

There’s another reason that Turner is so firmly rooted in the local community. Her father Charles was born in Delray Beach in the same historic landmarked house she lives in now. “My grandparents moved from Oklahoma to Delray Beach before my father was born in 1932. The house was built in 1925 in downtown Delray.” There is another side to this community minded gal that many people may not know about. She worked in social service agencies after college and had a direct affect on helping those in need. “I worked in a domestic violence shelter and as a crisis intervention counselor who reunifies families,” said the graduate of Northwestern University who attended on a full scholarship by playing Division I College Tennis. Though Turner didn’t devote her life to the social service pathway, she does have a remnant of it in her life now. She is currently a comentor for Women of Tomorrow at Lake Worth High School. It is there that Turner helps at-risk girls learn about goal setting and success skills. They bring in speakers, mentor the girls and help them with self-esteem issues. “Working in social services made me realize how important it is to make sure children grow up well. I also realized that I could have more of an impact outside of the ‘system’ whether through tennis or business. That’s why I am so excited about being part of the Delray Beach Initiative and Women of Tomorrow.” In 2006 when Turner was the Director of Junior Tennis at the Woodfield Country Club she went back to graduate school at FAU to get a MBA. Even though Turner is helping others fulfill their business goals, she hasn’t given up her passion of moving with the wind under her feet. “After not competing on the tennis court for 23 years I am now playing tennis on a SPBWTA team at Mission Bay. My partner and I are currently undefeated.” Life is good for Allison Turner – and she deserves it.

Homemade Food Made With Passion And Love

IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE By Diane Feen photos by melissa korman

{

Michel Menna knows that life should be filled with surprises. He also knows the power of a great meal to make a special occasion a spectacular one.

126 November January 2016 2015 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Owner/Chef Michael holding a whole Samon Pesce Dimare with Clams mussles and jumbo shrimp

That’s why Menna customizes special dishes in his intimate restaurant, Il Contadino. “I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my restaurant; often times it will be something not on the menu. I take pride in the fact that I can offer my customers their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.” That’s one of the perks of dining at this cozy restaurant in Pineapple Grove. You never know what Menna will cook up. If you’re lucky he just might have a platter of piping hot Osso Buco in a rich tomato sauce with risotto. He has also been known to create a wonderful homemade Bolognese Sauce with fresh ground beef bathed in his grandmother’s secret hearty tomato sauce with pasta. One thing that’s a given is that a meal at Il Contadino is a special celebration. Just ask Joseph Nuzzi. “I’ve been ordering from Il Con-

Annagabriella with her homemade Key Lime Pie she made on her 6th Birthday

tadino through the Delivery Dudes for a few months. Tonight I happened to walk by with my girlfriend and we sat down to eat dinner. They have the best Chicken Parmesan in the city and we just love the breaded eggplant stack. The service here is phenomenal, attentive and accommodating,” said Nuzzi, whose family owns five Italian restaurants and who compares Il Contadino to the greatest Italian restaurants in Palm Beach County. Nuzzi isn’t the only one smitten with the fresh food at Il Contadino. Just recently the Mayor of Delray Beach (Cary Glickstein) joined the Vice Mayor of Pesaro, Italy (Daniele Vimini) in a sister city lunch at this authentic Italian restaurant. The two dined on a platter of fresh stone crabs with a heritage that hails from the most precious of this delicacies origin. There’s another reason that foodies (and food connoisseurs) come to Il Contadino– and it’s the quality of their food. Everything is fresh and prepared with a consciousness geared toward pleasing diners. “Il Contadino took me in like one of their own when I was cold, wet and hungry. I wanted spaghetti carbonara - and the restaurant next door closed early – so I ended up at Il Contadino. Immediately Dale and Michel made me feel like part of the Il Contadino family. They accommodated all of my requests and specially prepared spaghetti carbonara for me. I will never forget the cozy ambience and goodwill I experienced. The spaghetti carbonara was exquisite, and so was the wine and cheesecake. Their food is world class 5- star if you ask me.”

Jumbo head on shrimp

Michael making fresh pasta

Just recently Menna added a few great dishes to his menu. The fresh Chilean Sea Bass with jumbo head-on-shrimp and organic spinach with prosciutto di Parma in a caper lemon sauce is excellent. Also luscious is their wild salmon in a light tomato sauce with peppers sautéed in a light tomato sauce with basil, garlic and wine. The fish is so fresh and the combination of flavors will have you dancing with delight (figuratively). Because Michel likes to entertain his guests with exuberance and delight, he recently brought back a tradition that was de rigueur in fine dining establishment’s years ago. He has started to flambé dishes at the table. You can opt for Penne Vodka freshly cooked at your table with butter, cream, marinara sauce and onions torched with a flame so it’s piping hot and flavorful. There will be other flambé dishes (and desserts) served tableside as well. Another new great dish we love is Chicken Rollatini made with chicken breast, prosciutto and mozzarella with breadcrumbs in a light tomato sauce. The chicken is fresh and tender (the way it should be) and the sauce is light and tasty enough to make you feel like your grandmother just prepared it special for your birthday. That’s the charm of this authentic Italian restaurant. Owner Menna thinks of his patrons as part of his extended family. He treats everyone with respect and is eager to show guests his culinary prowess. It’s not that he’s showing off, it’s that he wants everyone to be happy. That’s one reason that Cathy Lee enjoys frequenting Il Contadino so much. “Michel runs

Chilean seabass saltimbocco

a classy home-style Italian restaurant. Everything he and the chef cooks is delicious. The spirit of good food and wine is so welcoming. The opening was wonderful. I look forward to many more days and nights of food and drink at Il Contadino.” Menna has been in the food business for most of his life. He owned Ponte Vecchio in Ft. Lauderdale, restaurants in Boca Raton and studied the culinary arts in Europe. He was also in the produce business and knows what to look for when buying and preparing unique dishes. There’s also a new budding ‘chef in the making’ in the kitchen. Daughter AnnaGabriella, who just turned six-years-old, is taking her father’s lead and cooking up a storm. So far her claim to fame is fresh Key Lime Pie that diners are swooning over. You can try a piece or purchase a whole pie to take home. Papa Menna is proud. “My kids love being in the kitchen and my daughter’s Key Lime Pie is so popular that everyone wants to buy some. I’m saving all proceeds from the sale of the pie for her college fund.” Whether you want to dine inside or sit outside at the sidewalk café (that oozes of European sophistication) you’ll be treated like royalty and fed fresh homemade food that delights the senses. IL Contadino Ristorante 165 NE 2nd Ave Delray Beach (561) 330-0004 Open for lunch and dinner Catering and take-out available

Beef Carpaccio

ingredients (Serves 2-4 people)

• 10 ounce piece center cut beef tenderloin • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 cups lightly packed fresh arugula • ½ cup chopped radicchio • 1/2 -ounce shaved Parmesan • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • ½-ounce capers • 1 tsp White truffle oil 128 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

Caffé luna rosa 34 s. ocean blvd. Delray Beach 561.274.9404 www.caffelunarosa.com

preparation

Season the beef tenderloin liberally with Olive oil, Salt and black pepper. Heat a medium sauté skillet to medium high. Sear the meat in the hot pan leaving each side on the heat for only 1-2 minutes. Remove from the heat and place in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Wrap the tenderloin in plastic wrap and twist the ends tight to form the meat into a perfectly round shape. Place the meat in the freezer for approximately 1 hour. In a medium size mixing bowl wisk together olive oil and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Lighty toss in the arugula and radicchio just to coat the greens. On a slicer or with a sharp knife thinly slice the partially frozen beef and lay it out on a large cold plate, covering most of the plate. Place the dressed greens in the center of the plate and garnish with shaved Parmesan, capers and a drizzle of truffle oil.

Can I Keep My Pets Healthy and Living Longer in 2016 and Beyond?

A

s we enter 2016, this PetXpert is going to take the lead in achieving longer, healthier lives for your pets. Our goal is to promote healthier pets, minimize your veterinary expenses, eliminate the dependence of drugs and treatments plus guide you down the path of a natural, bonded life with your pets. The following guidelines will give you a “leg up” on keeping your pets healthy and happy. There are two simple steps to the core of this system. The first is to feed your cats, dogs, birds and all other pets, a species appropriate diet. Every animal except man eats raw foods daily as a meal. The food is not altered in any form. It is a rotational diet chosen naturally depending on season and availability. They fast, they gorge and in nature, there are no obese animals, no diabetics, no animals with walkers or limited life spans except for those with man-induced cancers, Look to the ancestry of your pet for the components of their natural diets. Dogs and cats are carnivores and therefore digest only animal proteins and fats… yes animal fats are good for your carnivores. Birds, small animals, mostly rodents are omnivores or herbivores … they eat everything

raw. In nature there is NO bird or rabbit food. These are only marketing opportunities devised by food producers to sell these products which mostly consist of waste. The second step is to look closely at veterinary medicine today. In nature, there are NO annual or semi-annual medical checkups. Most of the time, these requirements are nothing more than marketing to sell you something, whether it is ineffective vaccinations, synthetic preventatives, or tests. You see your pet every day, just as you would a child. Forty or fifty years ago, our parents treated ourselves and our pets within the home. They instinctively knew what to do with food, herbs and other products that were used on a daily basis. There was no $5000 vet bill. By using a more natural regimen and plan, veterinarians are utilized similar to how physicians were used in the past…for critical care or emergency only! The key is to look to nature for the cures and prevention. There are hundreds if not thousands of plants that provide the curative and preventative properties to keep all of us safe. It is crucial to identify and use them properly. We are here to help!

So-called ailments such as diarrhea and vomiting are not an issue unless you are giving drugs and feeding an inappropriate diet. Many times, this is a natural way of healing. Your veterinarians are not required to study nutrition or species appropriate diets. Our recommendation is to CHOOSE WISELY before you buy any processed food that they recommend or sell. Veterinarians and their staff are making claims on this food that even the pet manufacturers cannot do legally. The same is true with heartworm, flea and tick products. We are here to show you the truth. At the end of the day it is all about building a strong vibrant healthy body, free of chemicals and toxins, doing what we all should know instinctively for our pets. Are you looking for a more holistic and natural approach. We have it! Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe. com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at Fiesta Pet Deli or www. PetHealthCafe.com , 954-472-1404

ARTS ║ Beyond the Business Card

Throughout the nation local chambers of commerce strive to strengthen the business interests of their communities, but The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has reached beyond conventional methods and fostered a number of creative avenues that could very well change what it means to be a Chamber, and drive business to the next generation. This series will not only take a look inside what this innovative chamber is doing but into the interesting people who are doing it. We are going beyond the business card.

By Stephen Chrisanthus

Letter from Karen Granger, President and CEO, Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce

It’s hard to believe the Delray Beach Chamber just completed its 90th year. In the beginning, the Chamber’s first President Mr. Diggans (grandfather to Winnie Diggans Edwards) was the postmaster here. He, along with other enthusiastic residents built an oversized mailbox in the center of town and encouraged all residents to write letters to their loved ones around the globe encouraging them to come to Delray “because of the possibilities here.” You could say they were the first “social media” champions in Delray and their publicity stunt photos seem like a precursor to today’s “Most Fun Small Town in America” moniker. We are thrilled to continue the conversations with friends, family and visitors around the world about the possibilities here in Delray. Today the Chamber of Commerce is thriving more than ever. The “vibe and culture” of our new space and meeting rooms continue to attract business people and visitors from around the globe on a daily basis. We see members getting the guidance and tools they need to connect, grow and thrive—all contributing to job creation and a highlydesirable quality of life. As we reflect on our history and look forward to exciting days in the New Year ahead, we are feeling grateful to live and work in such a vibrant community. Warmly,

Karen Granger President & CEO 144 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

He Said/She Said:

New Year - New Goals By Robert V and Marie T

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end” - Semisonic

He Said:

Okay, so it’s a new year. We all have things on our same old new years’ “to do” list that we know will never get done. For instance, we aren’t going to scale Mt. Everest, we aren’t going to muster the courage to ask out the “way-too-hot for me” brunette in accounting and we certainly aren’t going to buy the midlife sports car that we would have to live in, because we can’t afford rent and the car. By the way, I know “She” and she embodies the “way-too-hotness” of which I speak. What we can do, is lower the bar and develop some realistic resolutions that will give you that immense sense of satisfaction when you achieve them. This newfound self-confidence will spill over into your social life, making even the girl in accounting take notice. Mold and change these as you see fit, but you will get the gist. 1. I am not going to get in shape. Instead, I will buy clothes with vertical stripes that make me look thinner and fit. In concert with my new wardrobe, I will endeavor to lay off the chicken wings on two designated nights per week (usually Wednesday and a non-football night of your choosing). The pounds will drop off, or at least appear to. 2. I will buy a book on wine and become a pseudo-wine expert. Women love guys who know wine. You will be able to talk about “legs”, the need to breathe and “oakiness”, to the astonishment of all. The “come hither” looks from wine groupies will pile up, especially after several glasses. 3. I will help two friends move. In the past, we have always had an excuse for not helping a friend move. “I’m sorry, but I’m busy that month”, “I’m on call for emergency brain surgery” and the ever popular “my bad back won’t let me”. This year, we are going to suck it up and actually help the first two people who ask. Again, you will look good for doing 146 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

a solid, possibly put one or two in the bank and you will have a good water cooler story regarding your altruism. As you can see, these center around bolstering your self-confidence, lifting your spirits and preparing you to take on the new year with freshly instilled bravado, panache and aplomb. Who, knows, maybe Ms. “Way-toohot” really isn’t out of reach after all.

She Said

We have survived the holiday trifecta, Thanksgiving-Chrismukkah-NewYear’s Eve. This is where we close the book and start over with new hopes and goals. They say resolutions are made to be broken, so instead let’s call them goals. Goals are set to be reached (or scored!). I choose to begin each new year with a clean slate. No looking back - you’re not going that way. I do however reflect on the past to try and not make the same mistakes. We are all familiar with the definition of insanity, right? Anyway, this year I will focus on 3 major points in life: Health, Wealth, Love and Happiness. All three are intertwined. Health - I will pay better attention to what

I choose to eat and ummm, drink. And I will make exercise a part of my weekly routine again. I fell off the gym wagon and was lovingly caught by my couch. I am not proud to say I have mastered “deep couch sitting” and I have memorized every channel in my cable provider’s line up. Wealth - I will take the time to better manage my finances and invest in my financial future. Maybe budget my clothing and shoe spending (WOW that hurt!). Maybe... Love and Happiness - Feeling better both physically and financially will definitely promote self confidence and esteem. Which of course will project outwardly and create positive energy all around. This alone will make you happier and more attractive to everyone. This is my plan for 2016. Self awareness and improvement. Me, me, meeeee!!!! LOL!!! And as for He, *insert side eye look here* Ms. “Way-too hot” is a very biased and generous, albeit appreciated compliment. Thank you. All you have to do is ask - if you don’t, the answer is always “no”. For the record, I like wine...

Happy New Year!

Recycled Memories

{

It’s hard to throw away your history. But sometimes you have no choice–especially if you are building a new kitchen and losing closet space in the process.

And so part of our holiday was spent deciding what to keep and what to ditch. It was agonizing–for me anyway. I was a newspaper reporter for the old Delray Times back before the digital age and since 1987 I have lugged my old newspapers to various addresses. They take up shelf space and some of the clips are yellow but they represent an important part of my life–they also cover a pivotal period of Delray’s history. I covered Delray from 1987 through 1997 from the Doak Campbell era through the Tom Lynch and Jay Alperin mayoral terms of office. It was an important era, representing the beginning of Delray’s revitalization highlighted by Visions 2000, the Pineapple Grove Main Street designation, the Decade of Excellence and the first All America City bid. There were lowlights too–political infighting in the 80s, a revolving door of City Managers and key city staff until 1991 and lots of controversy over issues such as race, drugs, crime, policing and labor relations. But it was mostly a progressive era, marked by progress, relative unity and vision. I wrote about it all; issues large and small and it was a great job giving me a bird’s eye view of how a city works. I rode with police officers, followed a young father through drug rehab, interviewed criminals, artists, entrepreneurs and even actor Burt Reynolds who filmed an episode of his detective series “BL Stryker” at the Cathcart House on South Swinton. His first words to me: “I hope you’re not with the Enquirer.” It was a great ride, writing about efforts to get something going on Atlantic Avenue, sitting through strategy sessions about the future of North Federal Highway (rife with prostitutes, an adult bookstore and vacant lots at the time) and rejoicing when a coffee shop opened downtown. 150 January 2016 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

I didn’t know it at the time, but that decade spent writing about Delray was great training for my tenure on the City Commission, enabling me to see how issues emerged and requiring me to find sources on both sides of the issue. Our newspaper came of age after the demise of the respected Delray News Journal and we “competed” against the Post, Sentinel and Boca News. But we wrote more–at least 6-8 stories a week, plus restaurant reviews, school news, social calendars and local sports. We covered Delray like it was the White House beat. It was fun and never boring. So it’s sad that the paper never had an archive or was digitized. Because while I successfully “saved” a few (ok more than a few) papers, even I – a notorious pack rat – have to admit that I can’t keep it

all and have a…..oh a new kitchen. So….they will be recycled. A decade of local history, arguments over whether to build a golf course clubhouse or a hot dog stand, debates over replacing Ken and Hazel’s with a movie theater, stories about the beginnings of Pineapple Grove, efforts to buy the Paradise Club, stories about MAD DADS, the beginning of community policing, the early years of the CRA, the beginning of legendary careers–Chris Brown, Rick Overman, Joe Gillie, Bill Wood, stories about Banker’s Row, protests on the beach, the first Art and Jazz on the Avenue and the purchase of a 100 foot Christmas tree will live on in our memory and oh yes the several hundred papers I managed to squirrel away. Shhh...don’t tell my wife.
