The completed application must have all of the following documents: PARENT’S: • Picture I.D. • Proof of Income: 2007 Income Tax Return If no tax return, other Acceptable documents are: • Child Support • SSI statement • TANF statement • 2-3 recent pay check stubs • Notarized letter of any other type of income (from family, friends, employer) CHILD’S: • Birth Certificate • Social Security Card • Medicaid/Insurance card • Shot Record • Physical or THS check-up** • Dental Exam** **These two documents are not required to apply, but it is a requirement of being enrolled in Head Start that your child be up to date with all immunizations, physical and dental THS appointments. Frequently Asked Questions When Applying for the Head Start Program Question: Who can return the application?

Answer: Preferably the parent(s) or guardian since there may be questions by the Social Worker.

Question: Is getting into the Head Start program based on first come, first serve?

Answer: No, it is based on a point system. The system examines your family’s current situation. Factors include employment, income, etc.

Question: What if I dot not have income at all can I still apply?

Answer: Yes, you may apply. Acceptance into the program depends on your family situation. All applications are reviewed and approved by a screening committee.

Question: What if I work for cash only?

Answer: Your employer will need to complete a notarized letter stating how much you get paid per hour, the number of hours you work a week, and how often you are paid. This must be notarized, no exceptions.

Question: What if I live with my family or friends and I do not have income?

Answer: Your family or friends will need to complete a notarized letter stating how much they give you per month to help you pay for expenses such as rent, car payment, clothes, etc.

Question: What if I am missing some documentation like my child’s birth certificate; can I return my application and bring it another time?

Answer: Unfortunately, not. We have to have all documents when returning the application.

Question: What if I have the receipt showing I applied for a new social security card, can I use it?

Answer: Yes, but only temporarily. Once your child’s card comes in, bring it to the school.

Question: How do you determine which school my child will attend?

Answer: It is determined by the area in which you live. However, if the school nearest to you is full before your child is enrolled in the program, your child will have the option to attend one of the other locations.

Question: What if the school closest to me is full when I enroll, and I choose to attend one of the other Head Start schools, can I transfer my child when there is a vacancy?

Answer: No. Changing to a new school, new friends, and new teachers can be hard on our little ones. For the sake of stability, children generally are not moved. Additionally, there are many students on a waiting list who must be accommodated when there is a vacancy.

Question: How will I know if my child was approved or not?

Answer: By letter or phone, which is done after the screening process.

You may or may not be enrolled at the center where you turn in your application. Consideration is given but not guaranteed.

Transportation will be provided for those who qualify.

The staff at Burgess strive to make learning fun and challenging for the students. Burgess initiated and continues to host the annual Elementary UIL competition. Burgess students have won many UIL awards. They have also won many art awards, both at the city and state level.

Included in this list are first place honors for State PTA Reflections, US Cellular African American Art Contest, Wal-Mart Environmental Poster Contest, and PTA Environmental Poster Contest.

Goals: We believe that every child can succeed.

The faculty and staff at Burgess focus on the academic development of each child and resolve that every child will succeed. Burgess has added learning labs to help the students with math and reading, and all school personnel work and plan together to help students achieve their goals.

WE BRAG ABOUT The Future!

A solid academic background and a strong discipline program create a learning environment in which students are well-prepared for the future. Fain is a T.E.A. “Recognized” campus WE TARGET: • Strong reading and math programs featuring a reading specialist on staff, four basic skills teachers, tutors who are certified teachers, the Accelerated Reading program, annual storyteller visits and visits by authors, the Principal’s Award in math, and the Presidential Awards for academics.

• Strong sense of self-discipline emphasizing a schoolwide discipline program, based upon the “Pillars of Character Education”. This program develops good citizenship, responsibility, and work habits. “P.A.T.” (Preferred Activity Time) is earned each Friday for students with no conduct marks for the week. Fain has also joined the Texas Behavior Support Initiative and Region 9 for three years to work on positive behavior support on campus. Fain offers peer mediation and conflict resolution, as well as a Bully Free campus campaign featuring a “Bully Free Week”.

Programs such as D.A.R.E. and Red Ribbon Week help students reflect on positive personal choices. Fain students have opportunities for extra curricular activities such as; Orchestra, Safety Patrol, work in the Eco Plaza, and “Faintastics” (an ensemble group).

• A strong parent and community involvement exemplified by an active P.T.A. and parent volunteer program, a mentor program staffed by adults, Rider High School PAL program, participation in the “Teens Make a Difference Day”, and an award winning Partners In Education Program: First Christian Church, Target, Chase Bank, United Supermarket on Jacksboro Highway, Subway in Country Club Village, Wichita Falls Kiwanis Club, and Strategic Realtors.

WE EXPAND STUDENT HORIZONS by field trips to Ft. Sill in Lawton, Riverbend Nature Works, Kell House, the Railroad Museum, Camp Grady Spruce at Possum Kingdom Lake, and other various trips. Fain offers parent involvement activities for each grade level, portable planetarium day, work in the Eco Plaza nature area, and Games with Grandparents day. Incentive days are earned at the end of each grading period with picnics, game days, sock hops, and other fun activities. We celebrate our students’ talents by hosting a Celebration ceremony each month.

WE FOCUS ON MULTIPLE INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES. Our staff is dedicated to developing and refining the latest in teaching techniques. Recent training has focused on Reading and Math Academies, learning styles, right-left brain methodology, multiple intelligences, S.T.A.R., 4-Mat, Gifted and Talented, and integration of technology. Fain offers one-on-one tutoring during and after school and a “scatter time” which allows for further small group instruction emphasizing students’ individual learning needs.

McGaha Academy Magnet McGaha Academy offers students an academy environment with standardized dress where all students are challenged to the limits of their abilities. The students may begin in kindergarten taking Suzuki violin lessons.

West Foundation Elementary, the “School for the 21st Century”, is a K-6 school that opened August 1996 in a beautiful new housing area with a view of Lake Wellington. The school was designed to provide maximum flexibility for interdisciplinary teaching, with technology receiving primary importance in all areas due to a generous grant by the West Foundation. West Foundation Elementary, in partnership with Midwestern State University, is a Professional Development School for preservice and inservice teacher education.

Goals: The guiding principles of the education program at West Foundation are • using researched based educational practices to gain academic success; • using technology as a transparent medium for learning; • placing an emphasis on lifetime learning; • fostering individual responsibility for self and for the school community; and • providing high expectations for all students to reach their individual potential.

Parent Expectations: In a safe, calm environment, the district curriculum is taught by a highly committed and trained faculty. Most faculty members are G/T certified and provide enrichment opportunities for all students.

Tutorials and Basic Skills sessions are provided for students who need some additional help to ensure their success, and a school-wide inclusion model is used for special education students. Interactive video, Internet, laser disks, CD ROM’s, multimedia systems, networked video retrieval systems, large screen presentation with surround sound capabilities, multiple computers, automated library/media center, Accelerated Reader and the Lightspan program are available technology for the students and faculty. Students attending Kirby have the unique opportunity to participate in an outstanding educational program created by merging the internationally recognized International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program with an established, nationally recognized math-science-technology magnet. Project based learning, integrated units, high expectations, outstanding electives, an open, warm atmosphere, terrific students and excellent teachers make Kirby a special place to learn.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP) emphasizes a broad and balanced education which focuses on values as well as intellect. Students study all major disciplines, including English, French or Spanish, humanities, sciences, mathematics, the arts, technology and physical education. IBMYP courses approach topics from a variety of points or view, including the perspectives of other cultures.

The program aims to enable students to: • recognize the extent to which knowledge is interrelated, • learn to communicate effectively in a variety of ways, • develop a sense of personal and cultural identity and a respect for themselves and others, and • acquire insights into local and global concerns affecting health, the community and the environment.

The Middle Years Program combined with a math, science, technology focus and outstanding electives provide a challenging and enriching curriculum.

Mathematics incorporates algebra concepts and problem solving into all math courses. Advanced students may earn up to two high school credits in Algebra. Science focuses on laboratory investigation. Sixty percent of instructional time is spent in hands-on activities where students are scientists. With laptops available for all students and wireless networking, technology is used in every classroom.

The mission of Zundy Leadership Academy is to create leaders one student at a time. Our vision is to develop the individual talents of young people, teach them to transfer the classroom experience to the world, and to obtain the skills to be competitive in the twenty-first century.

Zundy’s magnet program begins with an on-line curriculum that integrates content through skills, aligned both horizontally and vertically in the core subjects for grades six, seven, and eight. This curriculum is balanced, comprehensive and provides a framework of academic challenge. The curriculum is designed to help students develop critical thinking skills and use problem solving daily. Technology integration is a vital component of the curriculum, and Zundy is fortunate to have four laptop carts containing 26 laptops each. Students have the ability to research and create at their desk, in every classroom.

Zundy also utilizes two computer labs with instruction ranging from word processing to web page design. Zundy promotes activity-based learning in an academically rigorous program.

Zundy also has a thriving 6th grade program. In this program our 6th graders have the opportunity to participate in a secondary school learning environment, with all of the requirements and responsibilities associated with attending a secondary school. Students can participate in the Pre Advanced Placement program for their core classes. Students participate in Physical Education every day and change classes each period. This has been a very successful program in our district and offers students a jumpstart to the junior high experience.

Leadership is now an integral part of our magnet program. We believe building a student’s character and intrinsic determination will enhance his/her leadership qualities.

Students who are given a purpose and direction in life will be successful in whatever path they choose to follow. Improving leadership skills will help lead a student through the remainder of their academic journey. Carrigan Career & Tech Center accepts students enrolled at all four WFISD high schools. Students attend Carrigan classes for 3 periods of their school day and attend core classes on their home campus the remainder of the school day. Transportation is provided for WFISD students.

It is our vision to provide our students with a skill set that includes technical training and/or college.
