s we begin our 4th year of publication, this is our 22nd issue of Palacio de Long Beach Magazine. We want to begin by thanking our loyal advertising partners and our readers. This issue begins with a special tribute to the late daughter of Long Beach “La Diva de la Banda,” Jenni Rivera (1969-2012). Locally, we spotlight The Jazz Angels’ free performances at the Homeland Cultural Center, which itself is a hub of talent and free arts education. We also spotlight a local mother reacting to New Town violence with New Eyes. We discuss the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra’s spring schedule, the Seal of Biliteracy (which can give students an advantage in seeking jobs), Black History Month, Restorative Justice in Schools, Peace Week, and some romantic recipes for the season of love. I hope you enjoy the issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together, and please remember to keep in touch with us. ORCHESTRA LAUNCHES CLASSICAL INSIGHTS CONCERT SERIES By: Andrea sulsona

lassical music lovers and symphony neophytes alike will enjoy listening to the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra when Maestro Enrique Arturo Diemecke presents Classical Insights: Impressionism, an enlightening look into La Mer by Claude Debussy, at 2 pm on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach. Maestro Diemecke will explore Debussy’s depiction of the wind, waves, and sea in La Mer’s “Three Symphonic Sketches:” From dawn to noon on the sea, Play of the waves, and Dialogue of the wind and the sea. In addition, Maestro Diemecke, who is a classical music scholar and historian as well as a passionate conductor and entertaining

speaker, will discuss the life and times of Debussy and the sociopolitical environment surrounding La Mer’s debut. The second half is a presentation of the piece in its entirety. The entire concert lasts 60 to 70 minutes, with no intermission. “The goal of Classical Insights is to encourage participation in LBSO programs for patrons that might otherwise not attend LBSO’s regular Saturday night Classics Concerts, and provide an opportunity for the community to gain insight and feel more comfortable with attending a classical music concert,” says Steven Bronfenbrenner, LBSO’s Acting Executive Director. ublic schools do not offer much if any access to diverse expertise, artistry, and talent; there is so little funding to cover so much need. Located at 1321 East Anaheim Street in Long Beach, the Homeland Neighborhood Cultural Center is a place for people to explore and pass on traditional and contemporary cultural traditions. Open to all ages, people and groups, programs are offered year-round in urban and traditional arts. Homeland is also the site for poetry readings, theatre presentations, performances of dance and music, and cultural celebrations. Students are introduced to dance technique and fundamentals. Through choreography, students explore new ideas about dance

partnering and working as a community. Core competencies learned through dance include Communication, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, Global Awareness, Personal Responsibility, Physical Wellness, Health and Nutrition. These skills are critical to building children’s confidence and self possession and offers them an alternative, using dance as a tool for empowerment and communication. Her tenth studio album, (2008), became her first number-one album in the United States. In 2010, she appeared in and produced the reality TV show “Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C.” She also appeared in and produced “I Love Jenni” starting in 2011 and “Chiquis ‘n Control” in 2012. Her acting debut will be in the film “Filly Brown,” scheduled to be released in 2013. Long Beach will miss its daughter, Jenni Rivera, “Diva de La Banda.” P

Junto con otras seis personas, murió en un accidente aéreo cerca de Monterrey, México, el 9 de diciembre del 2012. Nacida en Long Beach, Rivera, de 43 años y madre de cinco hijos, se encontraba en la cima de su carrera como cantante y tal vez era la mujer más exitosa en música grupera, un estilo regional mexicano dominado por los hombres. Along with six others, she died in a plane crash near Monterrey, Mexico, on December 9, 2012. Born in Long Beach, Rivera, aged 43 and the mother of five children, was at the peak of her career as perhaps the most successful female singer in grupero, a male-dominated regional style influenced by the norteno, cumbia and ranchero styles. Jenni was a straight A student in high school. When she got pregnant with her first child at age fifteen, instead of dropping out, she earned her GED in 1987 and a business degree in 1991. She began recording in 1992, and her recordings often addressed social issues and relationships. Rivera, known as the “Diva de la Banda,” was known for frank talk about her struggles to give a good life to her children in spite of a series of setbacks. Rivera sold 15 million records and recently won two Billboard Mexican Music Awards: female artist of the year and banda album of the year for “Joyas Prestadas: Banda.” She was nominated for Latin Grammys in 2002, 2008 and 2011. She started many companies, including Divina Realty, Divina Cosmetics, Jenni Rivera Fragrance, Jenni Jeans, Divine Music and The Jenni Rivera Love Foundation.

The Landfill Harmonic: An Orchestra Built From Trash by/por: Andrea sulsona

on’t miss the trailer, available on “youtube,” for an upcoming documentary called “Landfill Harmonic” which focuses on one remarkable group in Paraguay: an orchestra that plays instruments created literally out of trash, made lovingly for them by their community. The young musicians all come from Cateura, a slum built on a landfill, where 2500 families survive by separating garbage for recycling. The youngest inhabitants are often responsible for collecting and reselling the garbage. The water supply is dangerously polluted; on rainy days, the town floods with contaminated water. “A violin is worth more than a house here,” says Favio Chavez, the orchestra’s director and founder.

In the midst of such an existence, these musicians have created something both special and truly awe-inspiring. “My life would be worthless without music,” says one girl in pigtails. A young man named Juan Manuel Chavez, nicknamed Bebi, has a cello fashioned out of an oilcan and old cooking tools. For the camera, he plays the Prelude to Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 — beautifully. “People realize that we shouldn’t throw away trash carelessly,” says Chavez at the end of the trailer. “Well, we shouldn’t throw away people either.” P Excerpted from NPR article by Anastasia Tsioulcas for NPR.

he History of Jazz from 1900 to the future is a 45-minute performance demonstrating the history and future directions of jazz for students in grades K-8. Audience members learn how and where jazz was born and about the evolution of jazz, and all the arts, as a reflection of and a reaction to what was happening in our world at specific moments in time. Jazz Angels’ musicians from the greater Long Beach area narrate the story and perform the songs. The History of Jazz, written by Barry Cogert, premiered on March 12th, 2009, as part of the City of Long Beach’s Smithsonian Week. Parents who attended inquired about performances for children who have limited or no exposure to music education or jazz history. In response, our History of Jazz series will come to participating

theatres and enrich schools’ curricula by providing music education, jazz education and an American history lesson all through music. These performances will be free to the public. In addition, after the performance attendees are invited to try an instrument at our instrumental test drive. There will be a staff member with instruments and sanitizing supplies so children may experiment with and get excited about learning to play an instrument. tudents across California have cheered about how a simple small seal can provide better job opportunities. Thanks to the Seal of Biliteracy, an effort by Californians Together and Valasquez Press, students in Long Beach are now available to receive the award in high schools. The seal is an award given to students who have studied and attained proficiency in more than one language by the time of high school graduation. By 2011, it was estimated that 6,000 students in the state had achieved the seal and by the end of this year, more than 10,000 students will have earned it. Last August, Long Beach Unified School District approved the implementation of the seal and by this graduation this June, qualified students may start to receive the seal. Currently, about 92 school districts have awarded the seal to students and over 170 districts, schools and county offices have formal

Seal of Biliteracy policies. “I suspect that the number of students receiving the State Seal will at least double this year,” said Shelley Speigel-Coleman, executive director at Californians Together. The seal is steadily being implemented in cities throughout California. It encourages students to pursue biliteracy and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. There are many advantages to being bilingual. tudents are mobilizing to change the disciplinary policy of the Long Beach Unified School District and eliminate the ambiguous term, “willful defiance,” from its code. Statewide evidence suggests that willful defiance can be used as an irresponsible and chronic way to stop ‘defiant’ class behavior by removing African American and Latino males from stressful classroom situations. Specific acts that can be considered defiant range from laughing, to eye-rolling, to improper attire. The objection most policy opponents have with the violation is it’s ambiguity. About 1,500 students were suspended in Long Beach from 2010 to 2011. The following year, despite a shrinking number of suspensions at the state level, that number increased to 2,500, a 75 percent increase. Although black and Hispanic students account for 66 percent of

enrollment in the Long Beach Unified School district, they received more than 78 percent of suspensions administered last year. The Long Beach probation department was not able to report on how many of those suspensions were for willful defiance. Just as with all problems, however, the best treatment is prevention. This has prompted school districts all over the country to look into alternative forms of discipline. Restorative Justice, formerly called “conflict resolution,” is one such strategy, currently being practiced in Reid Continuation High School on the West side of Long Beach. The organization called the California Conference for Equality & Justice is campaigning to get the method implemented in other schools in the city. P

want to wear the pajamas with the guns on them!” my son told me one evening. “Sweetie, you don’t have any with guns,” I answered. “Yes, I do,” he insisted. We went to his drawer and sure enough there were khaki pajamas with military tanks, jeeps, and guns. Even red gunfire was depicted and soldiers killing, or being killed, completed the image. I was horrified. I had never expected violence on children’s pajamas, so when I had folded the hand-me-downs I hadn’t noticed it. I started looking more carefully. I discovered that violence is too common in our lives. Movies, books, comics, and games offer it as entertainment. Billboards and advertising glamorize it. Bullying and mean spiritedness continue to be present in our schools. It can be found in our families through harsh discipline. Even our conversations are rife with aggression and dominance. All of this was brought closer to home this last December with the devastating massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. I think about the tragedy of so many families and of a nation. I ask myself, how can I impact our world in a meaningful way to draw attention to a way of life that no longer serves humanity? Perhaps I can bring light where some is needed. our purchase of it, our actions that embody it, ensure more of it. At the beginning of each New Year, I’m open to assessing my life with new eyes. This year I’m noticing more, I’m thinking about how to approach violence in our lives. During a holiday visit to friends, I was asked to select a movie for the kids from the DVD library. I couldn’t find a movie that didn’t depict violence of some sort. Even the ones suggested by the other parent’s depicted imagery that I do not want my kids, or even myself, to see. You can’t unsee those images. You can’t unthink those thoughts. Violent images accumulate in our minds. Imagine what a lifetime of these images does to one’s spirit? What images might we provide for our children instead? If I provide them with the emotional tools and the example to create collaboration and respect for different viewpoints, that is what they cultivate. What we learn in our play and in our families, we practice in our living. This New Year, 2013, I commit to making more mindful choices to eliminate violence in my life and my community. Through my actions it is my intention to transform the paradigm of domination and intolerance into one of acceptance, collaboration and compassion. When we embrace differences, we expand our point of view, we increase our depth of understanding, we create new and better possibilities for our lives and those of our children. We do not need another generation of wars; we need a community built on a foundation of love. I can make daily choices to cultivate a generation of kindness and compassion. Will you join me? P

uiero ponerme las pijamas que tienen las armas!” Me dice mi hijo una noche. “Cariño, no tienes ninguna con armas”, le contesté. “Sí, sí tengo”, insistió. Fuimos a su cajón y efectivamente había pijamas de color caqui con tanques, jeeps militares y armas. Al mismo tiempo, los disparos eran representados de color rojo y soldados muertos, o asesinados, completaron la imagen. Estaba horrorizada. Nunca pensé que la violencia estuvieran en las pijamas de los niños, cuando las doblaba nunca lo había notado. Desde entonces empecé a mirar con más cuidado. Descubrí que la violencia es tan común en nuestras vidas: películas, libros, historietas y juegos ofrecidos como entretenimiento. Vallas publicitarias que la idealizan. La intimidación y la media de civismo siguen presentes en nuestras escuelas. Se puede encontrar en nuestras familias a través de una fuerte disciplina. Incluso nuestras conversaciones están llenas de agresión y dominación. De esta manera, llegando a casa este último mes de diciembre con la devastadora masacre en Newtown, Connecticut. Pienso en el drama de tantas familias y de una nación. Me pregunto, ¿cómo puedo impactar a nuestro mundo de una manera significativa que llame la atención a un estilo de vida que ya no existe en la humanidad? Tal vez pueda traer luz a donde algunos la necesitan. Aceptando la violencia, comprándola, encarnándola en nuestras acciones aseguran más violencia. No pude encontrar una película que no represente algún tipo de violencia. Incluso las películas sugeridas por el otro padre tenían imágenes fuertes que no quiero ver y muchos menos que las vean mis hijos. No se pueden borrar ni olvidar estas imágenes vistos. Imágenes violentas se acumulan en nuestra mente. Imagínese un curso de la vida con estas imágenes le hace a nuestro espíritu. ¿Qué imágenes podríamos ofrecerles a nuestros hijos en su lugar? Si les proporcionamos las herramientas emocionales y el ejemplo para crear el respeto de los diferentes puntos de vista, eso es lo que cultivaran. Lo que aprendemos en nuestro juego y en nuestras familias, ponemos en práctica en nuestra vida. Este Año Nuevo del 2013, me comprometo a tomar decisiones más conscientes; a eliminar la violencia en mi vida y la de mi comunidad. A través de mis acciones tengo la intención de transformar el paradigma de la dominación y la intolerancia en aceptación, la colaboración y la compasión. Cuando aceptamos las diferencias, ampliamos nuestro punto de vista, aumentando nuestro nivel de comprensión; así creando nuevas mejores posibilidades para nuestras vidas y las de nuestros hijos. Eating locally with community farms by/por: Patrick Moreno

hen Jimmy Ng introduced the process of planting and growing food to elementary students in North Long Beach, he was dumbstruck when they could not answer the question of where a piece of fruit came from. Ng works at The Growing Experience farm (TGE) near 52nd Street and Atlantic, a 7-acre urban farm at the Carmelitos Housing Project for lowincome residents. The food grown at the farm is made available to the community through its agriculture program. Urban farms like TGE are making healthy living in low-income areas of Long Beach less of a hassle. TGE delivers shares of their organic produce, to over 100 subscribers in a zip code that doesn’t even have a chain grocery store, let alone a distributor of organic fruits and vegetables. Farm Lot 59 is another local organic farm, and the only independent urban farm in Long Beach. Another small farm getting involved with schools and youth development is the Spring Street Farm. The Long Beach Community

Action Partnership with the help of Boeing turned a small garden project called the Green Lab, into a 1.5 acre farming collaborative. Last summer, produce and eggs from the farm helped The Long Beach School District feed more than a hundred students a day. The California Education Department is reviewing measurements gathered from the experiment. This article was reported by VoiceWaves, a Long Beach youthled journalism and media-training project. The youth, ages 16-24, are learning to report, write, and create digital journalism content. Their reports will raise awareness of healthy community issues in Central and West Long Beach. Recently, one VoiceWaves reporter highlighted some of the well-known and not-so-well known healthy, organic and local urban farms and gardens that exist in Long Beach using the helpful tools for public research at HealthyCity.org. n an effort to lift the consciousness of the community about Dr. King’s legacy and principles, the Peace Week Committee, City of Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services, Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine, and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program are promoting more than a week of activities designed to unify the community. The candlelight peace march is an opportunity for the community to come together to promote the increase of peace throughout our neighborhoods. This is the sixth year that the City of Long Beach has come together to promote this annual walk. The march will begin promptly at 5:00 pm, on January 12th at King Park, 1950 Lemon Avenue. There is free parking across the street from the park at Long Beach City College. P

lack history month, also known as African American History month, began in 1926 in the U.S., when historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be black history week because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Several other historical events that that impacted the lives of African-Americans happened in the month of February. On February 3, 1870, Blacks were given the right to vote through the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. W.E.B. DuBois founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on February 23, 1868. On February 1, 1960 in Greensboro, N.C., college students did a sit-in at a Woolworth lunch counter that would turn into a civil rights milestone. Fifty years after Dr. Woodson’s announcement, the federal government acknowledged the expansion of Black History Week into

a month long commemoration. President Gerald Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month sparks an annual debate about the continued usefulness and fairness of a designated month dedicated to the history of one race. One critic declared, “I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history.” How an individual decides celebrate Black History Month is personal, and should be honored in a manner that is meaningful to them. For some, it may mean going to a parade or church event. For others, it could be an open discussion with their child about the importance of equality for everyone. By celebrating Black History Month we honor the struggle and determination of a people to succeed. And that is the history of America. P

t’s likely that at some point in your life you will need assistance with your daily activities. In fact, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates

that 70 percent of people over age 65 will eventually need long-term care, whether in a home setting, a senior living community or a nursing home.

Long-term care insurance can help cover the costs of these services and may help you preserve your financial resources.

Start the plan. Keep these factors in mind if you’re thinking about purchasing coverage:

Ingredients: ■ 2 oxtails ■ Salt and pepper for seasoning ■ 2 tablespoons olive oil ■ 1 onion, coarsely chopped ■ 2 cloves garlic, peeled, smashed, and minced ■ 4 tomatoes, diced Preparation: 1. Season oxtails with salt and pepper. 2. Heat oil in a Dutch oven and brown oxtails on both sides (about 5 minutes per side). 3. Remove meat from pan and place in slow cooker. 4. Add onion, garlic and potato to Dutch oven and sauté for about 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Add red wine to scrape up browned bits. Cook until all liquid has evaporated.
