armers & Merchants Bank on Pine Ave. and Third Street is one of Long Beach’s most beautiful architectural icons. This classical masterpiece in the Italian Renaissance Revival style has been so lovingly and meticulously maintained that stepping inside was like visiting Long Beach in 1923. On Sunday, February 24, the main atrium was the site of a program featuring a string quartet of musicians from the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra (LBSO). Roger Wilke and Agnes Gottschewski played violin, Kazi Pitelka played viola and Trevor Handy played cello. Music featured included “String Quartet No. 1; A Revival Service” by the highly original American composer Charles Ives. Written in 1896, the quartet is based on popular Protestant hymn tunes and has a distinctly turn-of-the-century American character. Musicians also performed Haydn’s “Quartet in D Major, opus 20 No. 4” written at the time he was supervising the musical life at Hungarian Prince Nicholas Esterhazy’s elegant, gilded palace. This work was right at home in the exquisite architectural detail of the interior of the bank. Heather Barker of CSULB gave architectural commentary. Excellent music, musicians and ambiance combined for the perfect Sunday afternoon. The LBSO has ventured out from its home at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center to broaden audiences and expand artistic services to the larger Long Beach community. Long Beach hosts a rich variety of intriguing buildings, many of which contain surprising performance venues. Sounds & Spaces explores some of these historic landmarks and gardens by enlivening them with exciting chamber music perfor4
