I HAD THE GREAT JOY THIS SUMMER OF VISITING NYC FOR THE FIRST TIME. MY LIST OF THINGS TO SEE WAS LONG - HELLO 30 ROCK STUDIO! I EVEN SNUCK IN A FESTIVE BLOGGING PARTY!

IF YOU ARE EVER IN NYC, HERE ARE A FEW STOPS I FOUND THAT YOU MUST MAKE ALONG THE WAY...

WHERE TO STAY We stayed at the Ace Hotel and it did not disappoint.

Everything about the hotel screamed my style. From vintage marquee signs to personal Polaroid cameras, it is - by far - the coolest hotel in the city.

WHERE TO PARTY We quickly fell in love with the rooftop bar down the street from the Ace. The Gansavoort Lounge is way up high, by the pool, and the environment made me feel like I was at a good friend’s deck party.

WHERE TO EAT We ventured up north and had lunch at Whitney Museum of American Art, under a gorgeous exhibit of balloons. It was an amazing lunch and filled my NYC museum need, without the large crowds further down in town.

WHERE TO SHOP Going to NYC there were a few places I knew I did not want to miss. For amazing dĂŠcor pieces and really creative party ideas be sure to check out John Derian. I read about the shop here, and was so happy to not at all be disappointed!

Mismatched bowls were filled with the fragrant meal as we all sat down around that worn wooden table; a gathering place for anyone coming home that day, or lucky visitors who might stop by.

There was fresh rye bread, that Bellis’ Dad had made using his own ground rye. The table was filled with chatter as we got to know one another. Bellis’ Dad shared how he had been raised on a family farm just down the road… And then there was Jaime, a Spanish student who had come to stay on the farm as he daydreamed about pursuing life with his hands ever plunged into the soil… and another quiet Danish girl who did not say much but had come just to find a moment of peace and rest in such a place. Bellis boasted that the table was full every year and always with a few different faces, but always with the spirit of community, friendship, and family.

It made us smile, sitting again at that worn wooden table on our farm. It had seen many come and go, yet was always there. Always eager to bring everyone together again. It was like a dream. The kind of place one slips away to, when the world is too noisy and the soul needs to be soothed by the gentle rhythm of a slower pace and familiar faces.

Sometimes receiving a beautifully wrapped gift is far better than anything that could be inside the box! It gives a sort of magic to the gift and tells the recipient that you have gone to great lengths to show just how much you care.

Of course, you do not have to be up wrapping into the wee hours of the night just to produce an outrageously wrapped gift. Just grab some beautiful papers and spend a few minutes hand stamping your own tags. Then embellish the presents with little things you probably already have in your stash like pretty buttons and ribbons! Don’t be afraid to use things that are not from the Christmas department. Wander around your home and other areas of the store for less conventional ideas.

For a twist, wrap your gift with the paper flipped over so it is white on the outside and a wonderful polka dot surprise on the inside!

PRETTY PAINTED GARLAND IN A LOOPY FORMATION ADDS A SPECIAL, SWEET TOUCH TO HOLIDAY DÉCOR. LIKE A STRING OF JEWELS FOR THE MANTEL OR TREE.

Paint small craft beads using acrylic paint. Each loop on the garland uses 25 beads and extends 4� in length. Helpful hint: When painting, string the beads onto a wooden skewer and paint one color at a time. Let dry.

Once all of the beads are painted, string 20 beads onto a jewelry wire.

Mark the sixth bead in your line and thread the end of the wire through that bead. This creates a loop. Once the loop has been created, string 5 more beads onto the wire to finish your first loop.

Repeat this process with the next color by stringing 20 beads onto the wire, threading the wire back through the sixth bead to make a loop and adding 5 more beads, finishing the second loop. Continue this process until the garland reaches a desired length.

They easily lift a hurried holiday mood with every passing glance.

HERE’S HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN TASSELED ANIMAL ORNAMENT:

Paint the figurines from top to bottom using silver leaf paint. Let it dry according to the directions.

Cut strips of tissue paper about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long. Then begin cutting fringe strips, closely spaced, about 3/4 of the way up. To save time, cut several colors of tissue paper at once.

Starting from one end, begin carefully rolling the tissue paper up into a tassel, adding a few dabs of glue every inch or so. About halfway through the rollup, glue in a string so that your tassel can be attached to the ornament later. Finish rolling up completely with more glue.

Attach a small eyehook onto the ornament. Gently hammer the eye screw into the top of the figurine to get it started, then manually screw it in the rest of the way with your hands.

Thread a thin string through your eye screw and then attach your tassels.

Tie off the hanging string to create a loop and cut off the excess string.

Download the PDF and print onto a sheet of adhesive printer paper, or draw a design directly onto the paper. Using your X-acto knife and cutting mat, carefully cut out the design.

Make sure the timber placemats are clean before peeling off the backing of your stencil, and sticking it in place. Make sure it’s well stuck.

Paint each element of the stencil in your desired colors - 2 or 3 coats might be required. Work fairly quickly; it’s best to peel the stencil off when the paint is still a little wet.

Carefully peel the stencil off and allow the paint to dry fully (overnight if possible).

Once it’s dry, you can opt to coat the placemat in a clear wood sealer to make it more durable.

Measure the height of a flickering tealight. Use the same height to cut the toilet roll, approximately 2cm - this will be used as the bottom.

Cut the top, height 1 cm.

Measure the circumference of the toilet roll. You can choose the height of the rice paper - make it about 1cm wider than your measurement.

Then, glue the 2 pieces of toilet roll and wrap the rice paper around.

Glue the vertical edge of your rice paper and secure to create the inside of the lantern.

Measure and cut a piece of thick white paper that is a tad taller and wider than your rice paper. Draw and cut a series of slits that are approximately 1/8 inch apart and stop about 1/4 inch from the edges. Run a length of double sided tape along bottom and top. Then wrap the thick white paper around the inside tube, lining up bottom and top.

Punch holes at the top and put a wooden stick through it so you can hang the lantern. Insert a flickering tea light at the bottom.

One of my very favorite holiday traditions is the hosting of an annual cookie exchange. This year I decided to throw one in true Scandinavian style.

The tradition started as a way of saving everyone from baking hundreds of cookies for the holidays all alone.

In the past few years it has snowballed with the addition of many international friends.

Everyone bakes a batch of their favorite cookies and brings them to the party - along with enough copies of the recipe for everyone attending. Once the table is filled with cookies, we grab pretty containers and fill them up with a little of each

kind. After everyone has had her share, it is time to do a little taste testing!

This year we were all amazed by Nina’s Swedish Pepperkakor, which looks just like the variety so many of us have become accustomed to through Ikea. As a homemade version, however, it tastes so much better!

Everyone ooh’d and aah’d over Anya’s Danish trilogy of cookies. She used one basic dough and divided it into three portions so each could be flavored a little differently. Karen delighted us with a traditional Canadian oatmeal raisin cookie that was soft and chewy. Heidi laughingly told us that

her chocolate biscotti was not really Norwegian, but something she makes every year.

We drank warm coffee, sipped on hot tea, and nibbled on cookies while sharing about holiday traditions from our own countries. It was a charming way to spend the afternoon during our normally rushed holiday season.

THICK, chewy oatmeal raisin cookies makes 18 cookies // from Smitten Kitchen 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 large egg 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1 1/2 cups rolled oats 3/4 cup raisins Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degees C) In a large bowl - cream together butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.

In another bowl - whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Stir this into the butter mixture.

Stir in oats and raisins.

Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden and a little under cooked on top.

Host a Cookie Exchange this year with a few simple tips: 1) Pick a day that is childcare friendly, if your friends are moms. I’ve discovered over the years that dads are especially willing to watch the kids for a few hours - in exchange for cookies!

2) Keep your party dĂŠcor simple. The cookies should take center stage!

3) Maybe you do not live near your friends or family. Host an online event where everyone must exchange a photo of their cookies and the recipe. Or better yet, have your friends send baked boxes of cookies in the mail to one another.

4) If you have extra time, include the materials for cookie wrapping to the event.

It will give ladies an excuse to chat a little while longer, and everyone will come home with ready-made gifts.

4) Have a friend that wants to come, but claims to be hopeless in the kitchen?

Volunteer to bake with her! Baking is great for bonding, and with two people, cleaning up is half the work!

Svenska Pepparkakor / Swedish Black Pepper Cookies 100 g butter, softened (room temperature) 1,5 golden syrup 2,75 dl sugar (250 g) 1,5 dl heavy cream, whipped 2 tsp ground ginger 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground cloves 1/2 tbs baking soda 10 dl flour (500-700 g), save some of it for baking

If you want, you can add 1 tsp of ground cardamom or some black ground pepper (not included in our family recipe).

You can use a darker syrup as well.

Making the dough: Stir butter, sugar, syrup, and spices. Whip the cream and mix it in. Mix baking soda and almost all the flour, add it gradually to the dough until it’s flexible, don’t work it too much. Shape the dough into a cylinder, wrap it in cling film and refrigerate for at least 24 hours.

Baking the cookies: Preheat the oven to 175 degrees C (350 degrees F) Take a small amount of the dough, keep the rest of it in the refrigerator, it is easier to work with if it is cold.

Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface, roll it as thin as you can without breaking (2 mm?). Use a sharp knife or cookie cutters to make shapes. The left over dough scraps can be collected into a plastic bag, re-refrigerated and rolled again later. Arrange the shapes on baking sheets with baking paper. Bake in the middle of the oven, for 8-9 minutes or until they are golden brown. You can make them chewey or crispy as you prefer (traditionally they are crispy).

Kniick / Swedish Christmas Butterscotch 2 dl heavy cream 2 dl golden syrup 2 dl sugar 1 dl sweet almonds (or more!)

1 tbs butter

Mix cream, syrup, and sugar in a thick-bottomed pan. Turn into a boil (watch out so it doesn’t boil over), and let simmer slowly. Chop the almonds. Place 90-100 little paper moulds on to plates. After the mixture has passed the cold water test*, remove the pan from the stove and mix in the almonds and butter. Pour immediately into small paper moulds. Refrigerate. *Drop half a teaspoon of the candy mixture into a cup of cold water. If the drop stays together and can be shaped into a little ball, the mixture is ready.

Anya’s Trillogy of Cookies 1kg all purpose flour 375 g of icing sugar 50 g of sugar 750 g of butter or margarine softened 3 eggs

Place all the ingredients in a bowl, gently mixing to get nice and firm.

Make 3 equal portions and put in the fridge for later.

Roll out the dough with a rolling pin: FOR CINNAMON DREAMS: use the top of a small glass and make into equal round shapes.

Brush with egg and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

FOR COCONUT BREAD: roll into a sausage, flatten the sausage so it is 1cm thick, and cut into equal sized rectangles.

Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coconut and sugar.

FOR MARBLE CHOCOLATE COOKIES: mix cocoa in the mixture to get a marble effect. Cut into nice shapes and brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.

Put in the oven, and bake for 7-9 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius or until golden brown. Leave to cool. ENJOY and Happy Xmas.

Traditions are a staple in our family during the holidays. They are paths that we go through to know where we are going and where we’ve come from. They are intentional events and celebrations of what we want our children to learn and celebrate.

“Everyday and ‘especially’ traditions in a family are an important part of that teaching… Traditions are a vital way of displaying our greatest treasure, of showing what—Who—is most important to us.”

We love to celebrate as a family. Traditions take our celebrations to a deeper level. They help form us as a family. They form lasting memories that our children will take with them for the rest of their life, and hopefully, one day pass down to their own families.

Creating our own traditions has always been a priority. We have taken some from my family (like Christmas eve pizza night), and some from my husbands. In this way we recognize where we have come from, and are able to share with our children and friends what is important in our life.

Using a round foam brush in any size, dip into an acrylic paint and tap off excess. For a metallic touch, dip the brush into a small amount of glitter paint.

Hold the balloon in your left hand, rest the top of the balloon on your knee, and gently press the brush onto the balloon. Before you lift the brush, twist slightly to provide more even coverage.

Repeat all over the balloon, turning it with your left hand as you go.

Tie balloon to a chair and let dry for about 20 minutes.
