Winter has nothing on the feeling of warmth that comes from friends gathering together to celebrate, it doesn’t hold a candle to snuggling up with the one you love. This season known for dreariness can be a season of joy as we look to fill our homes with beauty and cheer. It is the season to hibernate and create. Go ahead and tackle a couple great projects that you will love to brighten up your home. February gives us the okay to spend evenings sipping wine by the fire, (or craft paper created fire) if it suits you. This time of year gives us a chance to slow down and the see the many great reasons we have to celebrate each and everyday. Enjoy the revelries in this month's issue!

The playlist? I have a dinner party playlist that I swear by, and it's pretty quiet by nature. Static Waves by Andrew Belle (feat Katie Herzig) is in regular rotation when hosting / entertaining, but when it comes to me celebrating with myself? I'm probably having a dance party to some Billy Joel or Tom Petty. (Just try to frown when jamming to 'We Didn't Start The Fire' - it's impossible!).
What are we celebrating? I'm expecting my first baby this July! My husband and I are equal parts terrified and thrilled, but are definitely ready to celebrate the excitement.
The party is? Definitely small. I'm much more comfortable in an intimate setting with a close-knit group of friends --- ideally 4-6?
Will we be wearing party hats? Not for my party, no, but I do love them!
We are drinking? I'm pretty traditional drink-wise, so we'd have plenty of wine (cab, merlot and a white), champagne, and if it's a brunch party, perfectly mixed bloody marys (my favorite drink!) and mimosas. I also always take great care to offer something special for the nondrinkers, generally a refreshing cucumber mint water in the summer and sangria tea in the winter.
What’s to eat? Food makes a party for me, and I'm always a fan of an expansive appetizer bar and I'll never entertain without a fully stocked cheese board present!

Salt Lake City is a town brimming with history and engaged in a thriving creative community. Host to the Altitude Design Summit, many bloggers and design enthusiasts recently traveled to this mountain west mecca and experienced a touch of the city’s classic charm. It’s a great town to throw a party in! Local Shops: Vosen's Bread Paradise - I feel like I'm visiting another country when I step into Vosen. I can never leave without picking up a Berliner. MisC and The Green Ant - Salt Lake has some of the best thrift/vintage shopping this side of the Mississippi. MisC is very well-curated with the best-of in vintage styles (often times never-worn items!) at fantastic prices. You can find many items for women with a small selection of menswear and childrens. The Green Ant is akin to the vintage version of Design Within Reach. Another well-curated vintage shop featuring home goods, many from the mid-twentieth century. Ruby Snap - These cookies rock my socks off. Tammi, owner of Ruby Snap, only uses the freshest ingredients & has a real talent for blending flavors to create a one-of-a-kind party in your mouth (who would have thought coconut, curry and carrot could make the best cookie in the world?). Cookies are available served à la mode in the summertime. Hatch Family Chocolates - There's nothing like a cup of Hatch's dark hot chocolate in the middle of a freezing winter day and their salted caramel chocolates are killer! Twilight Concert Series - No, it's not some Stephanie Meyer fan club meeting. Salt Lake puts on a free concert series each summer and they are amazing. The Decemberists, Beirut, The Black Keys, Chromeo, Girl Talk & Modest Mouse have all performed in years past.

Genius idea: Wrap wooden sticks with yarn for cozy winter decor.

BUT BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE. Warm weather is still a ways off, but the winter chill will not keep us from having a picnic. We just need to find shelter first! For this party we decided to bring the rustic outdoors indoors for a winter picnic. To set the mood we designed a plaid patterned invitation printed on brown craft paper (download for your own personal use here). Once guests arrived, we served sandwiches and warm tomato soup. For dessert, we roasted marshmallows over sterno flames, and made s'mores with homemade graham crackers. Guests had the option to layer dark chocolate, peanut butter cups, and strawberries on their s'mores. Everyone had a fun time staying cozy by the craft paper “fire" and embracing February’s darkest days of Winter. With our plaid invitations, corrdinating tags and cozy winter menu your guests will be singing Kumbaya around the fire in no time.

D.I.Y. 1 Custom fabric vases by: angela hardison
To make these simple and stunning vases, print out the free pattern transfers by clicking here. Print the patterns directly onto iron-on transfer paper. Iron the print-outs on to your fabric, following the instructions provided with your transfer paper. Trim printed fabric to desired size for wrapping around the vase. Layer if you want, mixing and matching patterns. Tie a string around the vase to hold into place. Fill with pretty flowers, and admire your centerpiece or table display.

D.I.Y. 2 Natural wood chains by: randi, swoon paper studio
I love the look of party decor made from natural materials. These wood chains are easy to make and compliment any color palette you might choose! To make the chains, cut veneer edging into uniform strips. You can play around with different sizes, but I would stay between 6 and 10 inches long. Dab Gorilla glue on one end of a strip. Attach dry end of strip to your glued end to form a ring. Clip a clothes pin over the end to hold in place. Repeat process, linking each new ring to the previous (like a paper chain). Let wood chain dry for at least an hour (check the back of your glue bottle for specifics). Remove clothespins and hang wood chain as desired.

D.I.Y. 3 Mini golden cakes by: melissa, the faux martha
Gold is the new black, and mini is the new cupcake! Served on a festive coaster this is a decadent cake to call your own. Dressed to the nines and topped with a shear mini lime green pom-pom. Make the pom-poms by holding two fingers together. Wrap the tulle around five times and cut. Carefully remove tulle from fingers maintaining the shape. Tightly tie the twine around the middle. Snip each end of the tulle. Cutting in a circular manner, carefully shape to form a pom-pom. Insert toothpick in the center. Pop the champagne already. It's time to celebrate!

GOLDEN CAKES
No-Mixer Vanilla Cake 1 1/3 c. all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar, 3/4 c. confectioners sugar, 1 tbsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled, 1 c. whole milk, 1 tbsp. heavy cream, 2 tsp. vanilla extract, 4 large eggs, 1 egg yolk 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Set out ingredients and bring to room temperature. Melt butter and set aside to cool for 10 minutes. Add dry ingredients to a bowl and whisk well to combine. Add liquid ingredients, including the butter, to a medium container with a lid. Shake well. 3. Whisk the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients, combining thoroughly. 4. Prepare two 9-inch square cake cakes. Line bottom with parchment paper. Skip spraying the sides for this recipe. 5. Equally divide batter between the pans and bake for 25 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. 6. Allow cakes to cool completely. Run a thin metal spatula around the edge of the cake to release. Remove from pan.
Vanilla Frosting 6 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature, 1/3 c. heavy cream, 1 tbsp. vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp. salt, 5-6 c. confectioners sugar 1. Beat the butter, cream, vanilla, and salt together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. 2. Slowly add the confectioners' sugar and beat until incorporated and smooth. Increase mixer speed and beat until light and fluffy. Tip: Add a dash of almond extract or orange zest to spice up the vanilla.

Maps are incredibly versatile, they provide easy ways to personalize your party decor. Decoupage votives or napkin wraps and put a meaningful map location at each place setting. Guests will enjoy trying to figure out which place is theirs! Maps are also great for creating drink service trays. Purchase a wooden tray from the craft store. Spray with two coats of spray primer. Let thoroughly dry. Spray with 2-3 light coats of gloss spray paint. After final coat, let dry for at least 24 hours. Line tray with chosen map. Decoupage map to bottom of tray or have glass cut to fit. Change up the maps each season depending on where your travel fantasies lead.

To make the gold graphic candles, measure the diameter and height of any candle you own or purchase. Add 1” to the diameter. Cut a piece of wood veneer to fit the dimensions. Adhere the gold paper to one side of the mounting film. On the back of the mounting film, sketch out your design. Do something fun! Here, I drew some freehand stripes. Cut out the shapes you drew. Arrange them on the wood veneer piece you cut out. Pull off the back of the mounting film and stick down. Overlap the two ends of the wood veneer by ¾”, glue together with tacky glue.

With frigid temperatures and possibly snow-covered grounds, we find our comfort staying indoors sipping on our favorite warm beverages. The coffee shop being the best of both worlds. With the ease a coffee shop presents, I find it can usually be far too predictable. A good date has at least a touch of spontaneity or unpredictability. This date idea was inspired by one of our favorite coffee shops in Chicago that offers an array of game choices to add a little personality to your coffee visit. Surprise your date at your next coffee rendezvous with a favorite board game. If it’s a first date, you will calm nerves and abate the inevitable awkward moments. And if it’s your 89th date, you’ll likely add some much needed laughter and friendly competition to what could have been an ordinary evening.

A SHOWER WRAPPED IN BRIGHT

A little dessert table was set with all deliciousness for an unforgettable breakfast: blackberry pancakes, marmalade, honey, donuts, coffee and cinnamon milk. The girls sat around a table set with yarn balls and wood knitting needles.
A vase that looked as it was knitted with Ranunculus and Narcissus brightened up the day and little bows stepped in to become cute placeholders on each plate. We finished the look with a simple linen tablecloth and bright yellow cake stands.
There is nothing like gathering with your girlfriends to share in one of the happiest moments of your life. Add a tasty breakfast and you’ll have a perfect bridal shower. Using wool as a key decor element we gave everyone a cozy and warm feeling on this cold winter day. Our wool was also used as the main inspiration for the stationery and was given away in the form of a pretty bow headband for each guest.

Make these surprise adorable yarn balls to pop the ever important “will you be my bridesmaid� question! You will need: A carton box, one large bead, a ball of yarn, and printable tags. Download in 10 different colors here! Secure the choosen tag at the end of the yarn with a knot. Start wrapping the tag in yarn until you get a yarn ball. End by securing the bead to the yarn with a knot.
STUDIO LOVE
The HOW TO PROJECT has quickly become one of my favorite places to find tongue and cheek graphic art. The studio works with both graphic and text to create fun and whimsical posters about everyday life activities (like how to tie a tie).
