Police field more suicide calls BY DAISY HUDSON

Ashburton police say they are receiving up to three or four attempted or threatened suicide calls per week, and figures show people are increasingly turning to the police rather than mental health organisations for help. Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said the police were picking up where mental health couldn’t.

“Mental health resources are stretched, and police have to pick up the mess, so to speak,” he said. Nearly 12,000 such calls to police were made nationally last year, which amounts to an average of nearly 33 per day, and the number of calls has been steadily increasing since 1995. According to police figures, calls about threatened and attempted suicide have increased,

on average, by 8 per cent each year for the past five years. New Zealand Police Mental Health Team project manager inspector Sue Douglas said there were a number of reasons why calls were increasing. “There are a lot of possibilities. It could be there’s a lot more awareness around suicide. As far as the constant increase, we don’t know exactly why that is happening,” she said.

Police were now working with the Ministry of Health to understand why people were calling police rather than mental health services, and to improve police responses to such calls. “We need to make sure when we attend that we do everything as well as we can,” she said. One possibility they were looking at was whether people believed police would respond to calls for help quicker than men-

tal health services. “When they ring the police, they know they’re going to get a response,” Mr Banfield said. Despite the rising number of calls, actual suicide figures have decreased. In the year 2013-2014, provisional coroner’s statistics show the number of suicides dropped by three per cent from the year before, the lowest number in at least six years.
