Ashburton jobless hits 5-year high BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton’s economy might be roaring ahead but the district’s strong employment record took a hit in the final quarter of 2013. Jobseeker numbers rocketed up, hitting a five-year high at December 31, 297, almost double the number listed as looking for work at the same time in 2012. While the Ministry of Social Development figures indicate growing joblessness in the district, Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley said the figures were in sharp contrast to comments he was hearing from employers. “The last I heard, we had one of the lowest rates in New Zealand and all indications are that there are no workers available.” In the 2012 December quarter 154 people were listed as looking for work and Mr Brawley said it was difficult to understand how the numbers could have changed so dramatically at a time when the district’s econ-

omy was so strong. He suggested the welfare reforms that came into effect in July may have changed some of the definitions around benefit categories. The changes are designed to recognise and support people’s work potential with three new benefits - Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support and Supported Living Payment replacing several other benefit categories. As unemployment has risen, the number of people on Sole Parent Support has dipped to a five-year low at 321, down more than 80 for the same quarter in 2012. Overall the total number of beneficiaries in the district was the second lowest in five years at 1162, with the lowest in 2009 at 1152. The total includes supported living payments and other main benefits. Ashburton beneficiaries make up just 0.2 per cent of the national total for jobseekers and 0.3 per cent of total beneficiaries.

US singer Kelly Clarkson has revealed she is expecting a baby girl. The singer and husband Brandon Blackstock announced she was pregnant not long after their October 2013 wedding. Clarkson, who is four months along, announced the sex of the baby on Twitter yesterday. “We just found out we’re having a girl officially! I knew it! Only a girl could cause this much drama with all this vomiting ha!” she wrote. The singer is clearly over the moon about her news, despite the morning sickness. Clarkson made several comments in the past about how much she hoped the baby would be a girl.

Budding graffiti artist Shaun Goddard, 18, admitted defacing a map and toilet walls in Christchurch using a black marker on November 24. Goddard, of Bromley, pleaded guilty yesterday at Christchurch District Court, where Judge Raoul Neave ordered him to carry out 60 hours of community work and lectured him on the difference between art and vandalism.

Penn, Theron an item Hollywood actor Sean Penn has confirmed his new romance with actress Charlize Theron to TV host Piers Morgan. The stars sparked rumours they’re enjoying a relationship after they were spotted on vacation together in Hawaii over the New Year holiday. TV host and former tabloid editor Morgan now claims Penn confirmed the romance during a chat with him at the actor’s recent charity event Help Haiti Home Gala in California. In a column for Britain’s Event magazine, Morgan writes, “At 2am, Sean came over, and bear-hugged me. ‘Congrats on a great night,’ I said. ‘And congrats on Charlize too.’ He laughed. ‘She’s a keeper, that’s for sure ... well, I’ll do my best to keep her anyway’!” Morgan adds of a subsequent conversation with Theron, “ ‘I’m so glad you two have got together,’ I said, ‘Sean’s a great guy.’ ‘I know,’ she smiled, putting her hand round his shoulder.”

Sunlight helps blood pressure Sunlight may help to reduce high blood pressure, a danger factor for heart attacks and stroke, a study published in a specialist journal says. British researchers found exposure to sunlight alters the level of nitric oxide in the skin, dilating blood vessels and thus easing hypertension. “Small amounts of NO (nitric oxide) are transferred from the skin to the circulation, lowering blood vessel tone,” said Martin Feelisch, a professor of experimental medicine at the University of Southampton in southern England. “As blood pressure drops, so does the risk of heart attack and stroke.” The findings back up data about blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, which are known to vary according to season and latitude. Higher levels are observed in winter and in countries that are farther from the equator, where ultraviolet from the sun is lower.

■ ASHBURTON’S DC3 TO BE PARKED UP

Old girl set to make her final flight By Sue NewmaN

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

After a 70 year career, Ashburton’s DC3 is finally retiring. ZK-AMY will make her last flights over Ashburton on Saturday before she parks up and becomes part of the Ashburton Aviation Museum’s range of static displays. The decision to retire the old aircraft was a tough one, but at the end of the day it came down to dollars and cents said DC3 Trust member Keith Pickford. “The costs to keep it flying are mounting and we’ve battled to keep it in the air for seven or eight years. “We reckon we’ve spent a million dollars – $500,000 to buy it and another $500,000 on maintenance,” he said. The gap between what could reasonably be charged for passengers to take a trip in the plane and the actual cost of keeping it in top flying condition had simply become too wide, Mr Pickford said. “She’s due maintenance at the end of January and that’s $15,000 and the props need doing, that’s another $30,000. It just goes on and on. We’ve relied on charities for so long but you can’t do that forever.” The DC3 was housed at Wigram but when that airfield closed, its trust built a superhangar and relocated the aircraft to Ashburton. For several years it has been used for scenic flights and as a charter aircraft to raise funds for its upkeep. “Retiring her was one of those things we thought wouldn’t happen but we have to face reality. “Our intention was always to get the plane debt free and we’ve done that. “It will now sit in the hangar

but if someone comes along with a lot of money and wants to fly her they can; she’s still flyable.” Over the past seven years thousands of people have flown in the aircraft but Saturday will be the last opportunity. Mr Pickford expects the 30 minute flights to be in hot demand, with the first three of the

day already booked out. The aircraft will continue to be looked after by the trust and it will continue to reside in the Ashburton Aviation Museum, but the piece of aviation history has been gifted to the people of New Zealand. Final flights in the DC3 will be available from 10am on Saturday.

■ METHVEN FIRE BRIGADE

Busy few days for firefighters BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Fire officers have had a busy few days in Methven. On Sunday the brigade attended a vehicle smash on Muirheads Road in the Ashburton Forks district. Chief fire officer Selwyn Allred said a car had rolled

and a local man suffered severe lacerations to his arm. The Westpac helicopter was called to transport the man to Christchurch for medical treatment. On Monday afternoon a teenager was injured after falling from a horse. Fire officers from Methven

attended the scene on Line Road, Lauriston. Mr Allred said it appeared the horse had trampled on the girl, who was also airlifted to Christchurch for treatment. “They were concerned about pelvic injuries,” he said. An hour later, just before 5pm, officers responded to a

callout to Ashburton River Road, near Methven, where a man had suffered a respiratory attack. Mr Allred said ambulance crews from Ashburton and Methven, doctors from Methven, and a paramedic were also at the scene, but the man was unable to be revived.

■ LOCAL STARS AT TAMWORTH

Liam takes out intermediate section BY SUSAN SANDYS

Ashburton’s own Liam Kennedy-Clark has won at the holy grail of country music awards in Tamworth. On Monday night the 16-year-old won the intermediate overall section in the Aristocrat Country Entertainer of the Year, which is among events at the 2014 Country Music Festival at Tamworth, held from January 17 to 26. Liam has been in Tamworth since January 9, attending the CMAA Academy of Country Music in the city. He received a scholarship to undertake the one-week course in a Kiwi country singing competition in 2012. Liam said yesterday via cellphone from Australia that it had been a “real surprise” to win at the Tamworth festival, where tens of thousands flocked each year. “After being at the academy I met quite a few people, it was real tough competition, so being named overall was quite surprising,” he said. The biggest thrill had been a comment by guest judge and Australian country music star Beccy Cole, who told the former X-Factor contestant he was “a star” whom New Zealand was lucky to have. Yesterday Liam relaxed after the awards with a swim, something he was doing regularly as temperatures were often soaring to over 40 degrees Celsius. The intermediate age group was for those aged up to 18. He was among about 80 from throughout Australia and New Zealand competing at the event. Ashburton’s Amelia James was a finalist, and another Kiwi, Cheryl Anderson of Invercargill, placed second in the senior section.

In brief New cafe coming Ashburton’s central business district is to get a new café. Mister Man Bakery and Café is due to open in March or April, said operator Savonn Man. Mr Man is installing kitchen equipment at the Burnett Street site, which is among four vacant shops in a six-shop block, opposite Redmonds, which has recently undergone earthquake repairs. Every Print and Red Cross opportunity shop occupy the two filled sites.

New Zealander of the Year Kaitaia GP Dr Lance O’Sullivan is among three finalists for the 2014 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Award. The New Zealander of the Year and category winners will be named on February 26. The other two contenders for the top award are Maori educator Dame Dr Iritana Tawhiwhirangi and CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust founder and trustee Catriona Williams. - APNZ

Critically injured A 25-year-old man was critically injured when his ute hit a pole south of Auckland yesterday morning. Police said the incident occurred on Port Waikato Rd near Tuakau about 10am. Police on a merry chase A 14-year old girl led police on a 19km pursuit through Tauranga, police say. Acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray said the the girl failed to stop for police on Monday night, sparking a pursuit through Welcome Bay to Mount Maunganui and back to Papamoa. The chase ended when the teenager drove over road spikes laid by police in Papamoa. Two 15-year-old girls were passengers in the car, Mr Murray said. The driver was also processed for drink driving. The girls had been referred to youth aid. - APNZ

Monday’s 6.2 magnitude earthquake caused an agricultural chemical spill on a Palmerston North farm, resulting in one man being sent to hospital. Fire services were called to the farm at Awapuni around 8pm after reports of a strange odour coming from a garage used to store fertiliser. Agricultural chemicals had fallen over due to the earthquake. A man complained about having sore eyes and difficulty breathing and was taken to hospital by ambulance. - APNZ

Health worker Lynn Howie, 46, and her Britishborn boyfriend Mark De Salis, 48, were reportedly killed execution-style as they picnicked on an isolated beach at Sabratha, about 100km from Tripoli, earlier this month. Ms Howie’s family released a short statement yesterday ahead of her funeral. “Our family has been devastated by the loss of a loved mother, sister and friend. ■ TIMARU SPEEDSTER PINGED

Angry parents make son sell his car By PaTrice Dougan A speeding driver clocked at 207 km/h has been made to sell his car by his angry parents. Corey Ennis, 21, was disqualified from driving for nine months and ordered to carry out 80 hours of community work when he was sentenced at Tima-

ru District Court yesterday. He was caught driving his Nissan Skyline at more than twice the legal speed limit on Seadown Rd on January 11. The officer who nabbed him, Senior Constable Alister Doonan, said at the time it was the fastest speed he had recorded in his 30-year career.

He said neither Ennis, or a second person in the car – thought to have been Ennis’ brother – had the correct licence to take the wheel. The freezing worker was yesterday said to be “quite upset” about his conviction, with a family member, who did not want to be named, saying he regret-

ted his actions. Ennis’ parents have “put their foot down” and told him to get rid of the car, the family member told APNZ. “He’s been made to sell the car.” However, Ennis has denied police claims he was showing off at the time he was clocked, telling One News he was “trying

Nineteen-year-old Lili Ge will amaze and astound with her Zirka Circus performance in Ashburton this week. One of 17 performers aged between 13 and 22 years old in the troupe, she is an illusionist, magician and juggler in her first season with the Zirka Circus touring New Zealand. The performers are all former students of a circus school in China. They are well versed in circus performance and set up. It takes them one and a half days to set up the big top tent and all the seating. The performers can change each season, but some choose to stay longer. Miss Ge has been studying circus performance for 10 years. She likes juggling best and in her act, balances a giant pot that must be seen to be believed. The Hamilton based circus troupe are in Ashburton for five days – their opening show is tonight at 7pm. But they have performances scheduled twice a day from then. It is Zirka Circus’ third New Zealand tour, and along with Miss Ge, there are acrobatics, contortionists, stuntmen in the Wheel of Death and clowns, clowns, and more clowns. The circus’ final performance will be on Sunday at 1pm before they pack up and head to Queenstown.

Thieves send photos to owner Thieves have been unwittingly sending photos they have taken on a stolen camera to its owner. About 50 photos landed in Coraleigh Parker’s dropbox yesterday morning all taken after her new Samsung Galaxy camera disappeared in Tauranga. She instantly posted them on Facebook in a bid to find the thieves. Her message had been shared more than 30 times after she posted the photos. “It’s so funny. It’s almost worth having my camera stolen,” she said. “They should win the Stupid Criminal of the Year award.” Miss Parker has not seen her camera since January 4 and believes it was stolen from her car, which was parked on Matai St, while she was running her stall at the Little Big Markets that morning. It was set up to automatically send photos to her online dropbox every time it was connected to a Wi-Fi network, she said. The 50 photos, one of which features two unidentified men, shows locations and each image is date and time stamped. “They’ve been on a little bit of an adventure and they’ve taken photos all along the way,” she said. Miss Parker said her car was locked when the theft occurred. But she was hopeful she would get the camera back. “It’s half my livelihood. I need it for my business because I need it to take product pictures,” she said. Tauranga Police acting Senior Sergeant Tristan Murray said he had never seen a case where photos were being sent to the owner of a stolen camera. “Hopefully it can lead to someone being identified.” In January last year police posted a selfie taken on a stolen phone to their Facebook page after the image was emailed back to the owner’s dropbox. - APNZ

■ EKETAHUNA EARTHQUAKE

■ ACTIVE KIDS HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Quake claims start to flood in Hundreds of quake damage claims have been lodged as a result of the severe magnitude 6.2 tremor that damaged homes, cut power and forced the evacuation of a building in Masterton on Monday. The Earthquake Commission (EQC) yesterday said it had received more than 650 claims relating to the quake, which rocked the lower North Island when it struck 15km east of Eketahuna, near Masterton, shortly before 4pm on Monday. Most claims were for minor damage to homes or contents in the the greater Wellington, Wairarapa and Manawatu regions. People have until the end of April 22 to lodge a claim. Claims were still coming in, and assessors would be mobilised to inspect earthquake damage once EQC had a better idea of the number of claims it was dealing with. EQC said there was sufficient cover through levies, reinsurance and the Crown guarantee to provide for all valid claims.

National operations manager Barry Searle said claimants needed to hold onto damaged items other than perishables. “If people need to take action to make their home safe, secure and weathertight, they should keep records and photographs so that they can recover costs if their claim is valid.” The quake forced the evacuation of a three-storey apartment block on Queen St in central Masterton. About 15 people were told to leave the building, which was classed as a dangerous building, subject to inspection, GNS Science said aftershocks were continuing, with more than 50 over magnitude 3 since Monday. Police, ambulance and the Fire Service were kept busy with a steady flow of callouts, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported. Only a handful of properties in and around Eketahuna, Alfredton, Palmerston North, Feilding and Manaia were still without power. - APNZ

■ WIDESPREAD DAMAGE

Strong winds batter NI By Matthew Backhouse and Matthew theunissen of aPnZ Sue Keeling says she hasn’t stopped shaking since a large tree crashed onto her Panmure home yesterday afternoon one of dozens of incidents across Auckland as the tail end of Cyclone June blew through. At its height, the storm brought gusts of up to 90km/h at Auckland Airport and up to 100km/h to Manukau Heads and the Hauraki Gulf. More than 5500 households were without power at one stage and firefighters were kept busy with weather-related calls coming in “thick and fast”. Ms Keeling was in her home on Jellicoe Rd when strong winds toppled a large tree onto her roof about 3pm, coming dangerously close to bringing down power lines. “I thought it was a tornado,” she said. “I wouldn’t say it was as loud as an explosion but to me it was very frightening.” She said she had an anxiety attack as a result and her hands were still shaking when she spoke to APNZ several hours later. “I just felt really breathless and I’ve still got the shakes a bit.” In nearby Remuera, a large tree limb that fell onto a parked car on Martin Ave was fortunate not to have hit a bus with passengers on board. Nearby resident Isaac Matz said he heard a “pretty big crack” and went outside to see the branch denting the roof of the car and covering the road.

“It’s been hectic. There’s also a massive hedge on the other side of our house which has just pretty much been flattened. Good summer, eh.” Susana Guttenbeil was driving south on Mangere Bridge with her 7-monthold baby in the back when the wind blew a truck in front of her. “There was a massive gust and the truck swerved into my lane and nearly hit me. It was pretty scary really.” She had been driving slower than usually because of the wind, which gave her time to take evasive action. “If I’d been driving normal speed It could have taken me out,” she said. “I’m pretty sure I had a mini heart attack.” Fire Service northern communications shift manager Tania Matthews said they had received almost 40 weather-related alerts. “They were mainly trees and branches falling on roads, cars, power lines, telephone lines, roofs.” Other jobs included loose roofing and signs, but none were serious and there were no injuries. Firefighters outside Auckland were also kept busy with weather-related incidents in Kaiwaka, north of Auckland, and Pukekawa and Paeroa in Waikato. The New Zealand Transport Agency said strong southwesterly winds in the Auckland region made driving conditions difficult, with gusts of up to 81.5km/h on the Harbour Bridge and 70km/h on the Mangere Bridge. Power company Vector said at 8.25pm that there were 583 customers without power because of the weather. - APNZ

■ SMASH AND GRAB RAID

Jewellery worth $180k taken

By Patrick O’Sullivan

A 35-second smash and grab netted $180,000 worth of rings from a Napier jeweller’s yesterday morning. The heist, which included rings valued at up to $4000, was captured on CCTV cameras and police are appealing for any information the public can provide. Napier Antique and Jewellery Centre co-owner Keri Mason said the shop’s alarm sys-

tem was not activated by the 3am intruder. “There had been a report to the police of noise that was made and somebody walking past noticed the broken window,” she said. “We came down and there was a huge hole in the window just above our counter and our main jewellery cabinet was broke that had 180 of our expensive rings. “On the video footage you could see a guy in a black

hoodie jump straight through the smashed window, through to the cabinet where he loaded up all the jewellery trays into his black duffle bag and jumped back out the window.” The theft took just 35 seconds “from when he smashed the window to when he was back out the window”. No facial features could be made out from the security video “and he was deliberately slouching”. She said the average retail

price of the gold, diamond and precious-stone rings was $1000, but “some were up to $4000”. Mrs Mason owns the shop with her sister Raewyn Dailei. “It was all our stock for the cruise ship season and the busiest month of the year with Art Deco Weekend,” Ms Dailei said. They were underinsured for the retail value of the rings and hoped police would recover them. - APNZ

■ BIG LITTLE THEATRE COMPANY SCHOOL

Children enjoy ‘boot camp for theatre’ By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

“The best kind of boot camp” is under way at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week. Big Little Theatre Company is running its fourth summer school and over 50 children aged six to 16 are attending. Director Jackie Heffernan said it was like boot camp for theatre as children were completely immersing themselves for the week, and enriching their theatrical skills. “The feedback I have got is this is more fun than real school,” Mrs Heffernan said. “I think the kids are loving the variety.” Pupils are alternating between a variety of classes each day, which include hip-hop and street dance, and “viewpoint” which features exercises increasing awareness that as an actor their instrument is their whole body. “As children get older they get more and more self conscious of expressing themselves ... their whole physicality. When on stage you have to be aware you are acting with

Wanganui district councillor Michael Laws has taken a threemonth leave of absence from council duties. Mr Laws confirmed last night that he had asked Mayor Annette Main for a leave of absence and that had been granted. He said he had a shortterm employment contract and the three-month period would cover that. But he would not say what the contract involved or where he would be working. “But, contrary to current rumours, I am not shifting to Dunedin,” he said. -APNZ

■ NEW PLYMOUTH HOUSE FIRE

‘Irreplaceable’ artworks destroyed BY BRENDAN MANNING An “irreplaceable” private collection of work by some of New Zealand’s finest contemporary artists has been destroyed in a fire at a house near New Plymouth. Work by Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere was among pieces worth many millions of dollars destroyed at a rural property owned by John and Lynda Matthew. Mr Matthews, chairman of the Len Lye Foundation, said he had been building the extensive collection for 50 years. “They’re all there, from [Ralph] Hotere, [Philip] Clairmont, [Jeff] Thomson, [Allen] Maddox and [Colin] McCahon and so on.”

Work by Hotere that was destroyed included part of his Aramoana series and pieces from his Black Union Jack series protesting against the 1981 Springbok tour. Many of the items lost were bought directly from the artists. When firefighters arrived at the Omata property Mr Matthews asked if they could save a wing of his home housing his most prized pieces. They were unable to do so. “The whole place is gone,” he said. Although a few Len Lye sculptures were stored at the property, Mr Matthews said he was more disappointed by the loss of a jacket and hat the artist had given him. The cause of the blaze was

unknown but Mr Matthews suspected electrical components were to blame. His home and the art were insured, but the collection was irreplaceable, he said. “You hold these works in trusts for the artists and the viewers who enjoy the works, so those people have suffered as much as we have.” Gow Langsford Gallery director John Gow said the collection was a “very important private collection of contemporary New Zealand art”. “For the collectors, for John and Lynda, that will rip their heart out, because collectors become very attached to their art and know that they’re never ever going to see those paintings again.

■ CANTERBURY CIVIL DEFENCE PLAN

“It’s a loss for them, it’s a loss for the artists, the artists’ estates - in that if there’s a big retrospective in years to come, those works will never be available to be loaned again.” Art dealer Warwick Henderson said the destruction was a “great loss for someone who’s such a committed and astute collector. “Artwork is a very personal thing.” Mr Matthews said he, his wife and their Great Dane made it out of the burning home “battered and unscathed” after being woken by alarms just after midnight. The property had a number of extinguishers and fire hoses but after the fire made it into the roof there was no hope, he said.

New Plymouth fire station senior officer Ian Drewery said the blaze raged out of control due to the property’s location, lack of water and windy conditions. “The water supply ran out very quickly. There was a tank but we weren’t able to access it easily and when we [could] we couldn’t get a very good supply from it.” Water tankers were ordered but by the time they arrived it was too late, Mr Drewery said. “It’s a timely reminder for people who live in areas where there isn’t a reticulated water supply and they’ll often be some way away from a fire brigade, that access to good substantial water supply [is essential].” - APNZ

Draft Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan 2014 – Risk Profile

Public comment sought on draft emergency plan Draft Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan 2014 – Risk Profile

Inland areas such as the Mackenzie Basin receive lower rainfall and greater temperature extremes. In contrast, the Canterbury foothills receive over 1,000mm of rainfall and the high mountains experience from 2,000 to 4,000mm per year. Canterbury flood hazard areas are shown in Figure 3.2.

Mid Canterbury’s risk of floods, earthquakes, pandemics and other potentially deadly events has been addressed in a new Civil Defence plan. Public comment is being sought on the draft Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group Plan 2014. The plan details the risk to the region from a wide range of possible events, and says that Canterbury’s seismicity has increased since the Canterbury earthquakes. However, earthquakes are categorised as only “possible” in the plan, with other disasters such as a pandemic, flooding in eastern foothill rivers, wildfire, major snow and ice and a major road accident being classified as “likely”. But an alpine fault earthquake or local earthquake or regional tsunami, while only “possible”, could have “major” and “catastrophic” consequences. Civil Defence emergency management officer Don Geddes encouraged residents to submit on the plan. The plan provides a framework for Civil Defence and emergency management decisions to be made across the Canterbury region, and has been developed to enable the community, local authorities and emergency response organisations manage hazards and risks. Mr Geddes said discussion on the various risks to the district backed up the directive that individuals should be prepared for

Canterbury's distinctive topography causes extremes of temperature and rainfall. Hot moist winds are forced over the ranges of the Main Divide, where they drop their moisture (orographic rainfall) and then sweep across the Canterbury Plains. As a result of this weather pattern, coastal Canterbury is considered dry with an average rainfall of 650 - 700mm per year.

■ CHEEKY CHRISTCHURCH THEFT

Thief makes off with rare car By Cullen Smith A rare collectors’ car was stolen from Dallington in broad daylight after the thief convinced a neighbour he was authorised to clear out a garage before demolition. The fluorescent-jacketed offender told the neighbour he had been contracted by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to remove a 1972 model Ford Fairmont coupe, then hauled it away on a car trailer. Now owner Dean Percy is offering a $5000 reward for the recovery of the vehicle he has owned and restored over the last 15 years. But he fears it was stolen to order and may be destined for Australia, where it could fetch about $50,000. “It’s pretty rare in New Zealand. I’m led to believe there is only a handful of this model

in the country and even less in close to original condition,” Mr Percy said. “It has a 5 litre factory V8 and it’s painted in the original Ford colour of Kelly Green. I was in the process of finishing restoring it so the passenger’s front seat, interior door trim and a tail light weren’t stolen with the vehicle.” Mr Percy said the vehicle was stolen from his parents’ Gayhurst Rd home on December 23. Their home is awaiting earthquake repairs and they are living elsewhere. “My parents moved out because the house is pretty unlivable,” he said. “On reflection, I should have removed the car earlier.” Mr Percy said police told him the garage had been burgled a couple of days before the Ford was taken. “The police said a couple

turned up in a silver Nissan Bluebird towing a car trailer,” he said. “They knew what they were there for. “They knocked on the neighbours’ door and asked for a glass of water, then explained they were clearing out the garage prior to EQC demolition work the following week.” They were in a silver vehicle believed to be a 1995 or 1996 Nissan Bluebird. Mr Percy said he hoped his car wouldn’t be butchered for parts. “The police theory is that it has maximum value as a car in one piece.” Mr Percy has posted a photograph of the Ford Fairmont on the Canterbury Burglar and Thief Watch Facebook page and is offering a $5000 reward for its recovery. Constable Andrew Hearne said offering a reward was

worth a try. “You never know your luck. Criminals are not exactly loyal to each other.” A brief Facebook campaign led to the recent recovery of a 2001 special edition Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 that was stolen from a Riccarton property between December 28 and January 2. Police said the Mitsubishi was found at an Uxbridge St property with damaged ignition and some parts missing. Police inquiries are continuing. Detective Senior Sergeant Corrie Parnell said some criminals had taken to using “dayglo vests” since the earthquakes as a cover for their offending. “The message to the public is that anyone coming to your door wearing high-visibility clothing and claiming to represent authorities should be asked to provide bona fide identification.” - APNZ

■ ASHBURTON BOOST TRIAL

Initiative aims to improve literacy skills By Sue newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

A project aimed at improving the literacy skills of seven and eight year olds will be trialled in three Ashburton schools this year. The Boost programme is the brainchild of Ashburton man Trevor Croy who has worked with the Ashburton Learning Centre team to develop the project which will involve a team of volunteer tutors working with two students for one hour, twice each week. The project is funded for five years through grants from the Advance Ashburton Foundation and the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, and involves Allenton, Tinwald and Netherby schools. Netherby principal Andrew Leverton said it would be a welcome addition to the reading tool kit for schools who were working with a growing number of children for whom literacy was not an easy task. “Schools do a good job boosting literacy skills but often we need to go beyond school to do this. With more and more emphasis on getting students to achieve standards it sometimes takes a lot of effort and a lot of hard work – in and out of school. “This is another net to catch children who are under achieving,” he said. Schools will identify year three and four children they believed needed a jump start with

literacy for two one-hour tutoring sessions each week. Mr Croy is on the grants committee of both charitable foundations and is also chair of the Ashburton Learning Centre. It was logical, he said that the three organisations became partners in the new project. For him, yesterday’s launch was the culmination of a yearlong dream. “I’d spoken to senior educators and they gave me the bones

of the idea. A lot of people have put in a lot of work and it’s come together. The schools said ‘bring it on’.” Learning centre manager Mary Phillips said the project’s success now relied on signing up and training at least 20 volunteers. “This will be our greatest challenge, getting enough people of the right calibre to undertake the training. We need highly literate people who

can commit up to four hours a week.” It was important tutors were able to build a relationship with their students so that taking part in the programme was seen by them as something special that they wanted to take part in, she said. More information on the project and tutoring can be found on www.ashburtonlearningcentre.co.nz or by emailing adult. literacy@xtra.co.nz.

Compo offer for roughed up pensioner By Cullen Smith Pensioner John Bennett will get compensation and an apology from police for the way he was roughed up by armed officers at his home more than two years ago. An Independent Police Conduct Authority report found police used “excessive force” during an “unjustifiable and unreasonable” arrest at Mr Bennett’s Burwood home in December 2011. Mr Bennett was carrying an old air pistol and a toy baseball bat while investigating suspicious noises at his earthquakedamaged home when he was wrestled to the ground by aggressive armed police and had a rifle pressed against his cheek. The retired engineer, aged 65 at the time, was arrested and thrown in the cells wearing only his underpants and a T-shirt and charged with unlawfully carrying a firearm and possessing an offensive weapon. It took three court appearances before police dropped the charges. The IPCA report found the armed officers, who were looking for a fugitive believed to be in the area, used excessive force and acted prematurely without an adequate appreciation of Mr Bennett’s situation. Mr Bennett’s solicitor, Graeme Riach, of Harmans Lawyers, confirmed yesterday police had agreed to make “a payment of compensation and to apologise to him”. But Canterbury police district commander Superintendent Gary Knowles declined to comment. “The matter remains under discussion between the parties,” a police spokesman said. Mr Riach said the amount of compensation would remain confidential “at this stage”. “We haven’t been able to sight the documentation yet,” he said. “There will be a satisfactory outcome. We’re just awaiting documentation from police and that is due in the next few days.” Mr Riach said he was unable to confirm whether the compensation would cover all the legal fees and medical expenses that Mr Bennett was seeking. “There is an agreement that some compensation will be paid and an apology given. The details have yet to be confirmed.” Mr Bennett said he and wife, Iris, were looking forward to putting the incident behind them after both had been “stressed out” over the last two years. “I’ve been waiting for an apology for over two years now. It’s been a long time coming. - APNZ

■ NATIONAL’S COALITION PLANS

Key hasn’t totally ruled out Peters By adam BenneTT Prime Minister John Key says he would prefer to continue working with ACT, the Maori Party and United Future following this year’s election but could add Colin Craig’s Conservative Party. In a statement ahead of his post-Cabinet press conference yesterday afternoon, Mr Key said while there had been differences between National and its current three partners, “together our four parties have formed a stable and successful Government since late 2008”. “We also have policy differences with the Conservative Party, however, it is likely that there would be enough common ground to work with them in Government.”

Should New Zealand First be returned to Parliament, we would not rule out a discussion after the election

Mr Key said it was most likely that any post-election working relationships would be via confidence and supply agreements, “as these have worked well in the past two Parliamentary terms”. Mr Key ruled out working with Labour, the Greens and Mana, “on the basis that there is insufficient common ground to

■ LOCAL BLOOD DONATIONS

achieve a stable and successful working relationship”. “These parties represent a far left-wing agenda that we do not believe is good for New Zealand,” said Mr Key. Mr Key said a post-election working relationship was very unlikely with Winston Peters’ NZ First but would not rule the possibility out ahead of the

election. “In 2008 we ruled them out because we were unable to reconcile some of their statements on the Glenn donation matter. Six years has passed and, should New Zealand First be returned to Parliament, we would not rule out a discussion after the election.” Asked why he had ruled out working with the Greens, Mr Key said in spite of the fact National had worked “reasonably constructively” with them in the past, “what’s become clear over the last three years is that their agenda is a far left agenda. The decision to rule them out was not about the Greens’ environmental policies which were in many cases aligned with those of National, he said. Mr Key said he was now re-

fusing to rule out working with Mr Peters because a few things had changed in recent years. That included the fact that it was now six years since the Owen Glenn donations saga. Since then Mr Peters and NZ First had been returned to Parliament and if he was returned again this year that would indicate he had passed a test with the public. Another factor was that there were some National voters who would rather see a National Government with NZ First than a Labour-Greens Government. Mr Key said one unlikely option was that National could form a Government with NZ First abstaining on confidence and supply. - APNZ

Bunnings’ staff back worthy cause Dunne reinstated as a minister

By Toni Williams

Toni.w@Theguardian.co.nz

Bunnings staff are lining up to help the New Zealand Blood Service with their blood drive next month. Five employees are regular donors at the service and are fully supported by their employer. Former nurse and now Bunnings team member Nellie Pain said Bunnings made sure those scheduled to donate blood were supported at work. That meant making sure they were hydrated and had lighter workloads when they returned from donating. “It’s a worthy cause, and (Bunnings) fully support staff going to appointments.” Ms Pain started at Bunnings seven years ago and became a donor. She knows the benefits of the blood bank and many of the staff had personal accounts of why they first started. “Everyone here (at Bunnings) is, I think proud to be part of it.” The New Zealand Blood Bank is collecting in Ashburton on February 4, 2014 at the Ashburton Club and MSA from 2pm to 6pm. Anyone wanting to donate can register their interest online at nzblood.co.nz or contact 0800 448 325 for an appointment. By isaac davison Prime Minister John Key has confirmed that United Future leader Peter Dunne will be reinstated as a minister. Mr Key announced the changes to the National-led Government’s ministerial lineup. Mr Dunne has regained his Internal Affairs, Associate Health and Associate Conservation portfolios. He will remain a minister outside Cabinet. Michael Woodhouse will fill the vacancy within Cabinet created by Internal Affairs and Local Government Minister Chris Tremain, who will resign at this year’s election. Mr Key also announced a new minister outside Cabinet Maungakiekie MP Sam LotuIiga will become Minister of Pacific Island Affairs and Associate Minister of Local Government. The Prime Minister forced Mr Dunne to resign on June 7 last year for his refusal to fully co-operate with the Government inquiry into the leak of Rebecca Kitteridge’s report into spy agency the Government Communications Security Bureau. Mr Dunne refused to hand over a complete set of emails between him and Fairfax reporter Andrea Vance. The Henry inquiry could not identify who leaked the report. Mr Key said last year it was possible he would reinstate Mr

Peter Dunne

Dunne as a minister. Mr Key said he was pleased to welcome Mr Dunne back as a minister. “We have worked together well in the past, and United Future continues to be a valued partner in Government. “While 2013 brought its challenges, both Peter and I start this election year looking forward, not back.” He congratulated Mr LotuIiga, who took over the Pacific Island Affairs role from Hekia Parata. “Sam has strong ties with the Pasifika community and has represented their interests in caucus well. “He is well placed to build on the work that Hekia Parata has done in this portfolio this past term.” Social Development Minister Paula Bennett has been given Mr Tremain’s Local Government portfolio. Todd McClay will become Associate Tourism Minister. The new ministers will be sworn in by the GovernorGeneral on January 28. - APNZ

OUR VIEW

We cannot live in fear Coen Lammers EDITOR

P

eople in Mid Canterbury and the wider Canterbury region will feel a lot of sympathy for the folk of Eketahuna and surrounding areas after Monday’s 6.3 earthquake. The shake was apparently felt from Invercargill to Auckland, but amazingly, did not cause any deaths or injury. With the amount of things flying around and falling over on Monday though, the lower North Island has dodged a bullet. In some ways their situation is not too dissimilar to this region after the September 4, 2010, quakes when we all thought we had survived the worst with only some damage to property. We were all grateful that no-one lost their lives, but that sense of relief was shattered four months later when 185 people died in the February 22 quakes. And the people in the North Island will be painfully aware of this sequence of events and be preparing themselves for potentially more quakes. The Cook Strait quakes in July last year were also followed by more quakes some weeks later, just like in Canterbury, and these scenarios will give people in Masterton, Wellington and Palmerston North that same horrible vulnerable feeling we experienced three years ago. The latest quakes demonstrate there is simply no hiding from Mother Nature, anywhere in the Shaky Isles, but we cannot let our daily lives be dominated by that. We can be prepared, as demonstrated in the latest EQC advertising, but should try not to live in constant fear. It struck me how many people in the latest quakes still opted to run outside, as our instincts tell us, instead of following the deadly lessons from Christchurch and duck for cover to protect yourself from falling material. The Wairarapa has been fortunate the quake depth provided a 30km buffer from the real impact, but hopefully the locals will be more prepared if their resolve is tested again. With any luck that will not be necessary, and Monday’s quake will just become an exciting story with a happy ending that locals can tell their grandchildren.

YOUR VIEW Chalmers Avenue Why do the Ashburton police continue to allow multi-ton trucks to speed down Chalmers Avenue? You’d think they would love the chance to collect some revenue. There is a serious risk of young school children getting hurt which is the main concern, but also the damage to the roads which is caused by these massive machines. Wake up Ashburton police before someone gets hurt!

Dairying I read with interest your front page on the stoush between Gareth Morgan and Willie Leferink. They have far too much in common to be having a stoush on such matters. To both of them farming is a means to an end and that is

making money. Neither have an interest in growing food that is so nutrient dense that it will properly feed the world, only in growing so much per hectare of land that they make maximum profit for themselves and their shareholders. The World Health Organisations figures show that the nutrient value of food has dropped by over 60 per cent since chemical farming started. Which means that Willie et al. have to grow more than twice as much as a nutrient dense farmer in order to provide for the proper nutrition of the population. So if they grew differently they would need to farm only half the land they do to provide that proper nutrition. Their way also means that people need to eat twice as much to be properly provided with the nutrients required to make them healthy and intel-

ligent etc. Which of course would explain the obesity epidemic. They are both actually causing the problems they are supposedly solving. Gareth and Willie both pay lip service to environmental matters, in so far as they do the minimum required to meet the prevailing legislation, which they help to draft of course, because doing the right thing would affect their bottom line. I would recommend they both contact Joel Salatin whose methods are both innovative and nutrient dense. He is non-chemical as well as non-intensive and his profits are more than double those of the best chemical, intensive, mono-culture farm of the same size. That should satisfy everybody including the bank manager. John Taylor *****

from the council’s basement over to the soon-to-be-completed facility. Unfortunately, but probably not surprisingly, there is a backlog of assessment work to be done to sort out what needs to be retained and what should be disposed of. Last year we were able to fully computerise the in-house work flow process for building consents, noticeably reducing average processing times. We have a list of other council-service related processes that we want to treat similarly – liquor, animal licensing, RMA monitoring, noise, litter, solid waste, abandoned vehicles, vehicle crossings, etc. We already have an electronic purchase order system up and running in the council which is being used for about 25 per cent of our transactions. The other 75 per cent of purchase orders are for the most part manual. With an in-house trainer starting shortly, we will be looking to have a lot more of the procure-to-pay process carried out electronically, which along with being more efficient will also improve our control environment.

One of our main priorities is to expand online services for customers. Residents can currently go online to pay animal, parking and litter infringements and dog re-registrations. Right now we are trialling an online building consent application process, with the expectation that it will be ready for public use shortly. The next areas we will focus on are resource consents applications and also Land Information Memorandum applications. Another ‘must’ is to be able to automatically send out rates invoices electronically rather than manually or by mail, and to catch up with a lot of other councils, enabling people to pay their rates online. A number of improvements in our geographic information systems area are planned. Improved data presentation and querying ability will roll out shortly. We will be looking at using Land Information New Zealand and other third party data to add value to the information that can be viewed through GIS. Census 2013 data will be added as it becomes available.

Enabling access to GIS for staff out in the field with the wider use of tablet computers as they become more affordable will also be a priority. Nearer the end of the year, subject to council funding being approved, we hope to be installing a new computer system for the Ashburton Library. It is called Kotui. It’s an affordable shared service for public libraries which will help our librarians manage our collection and provide first class functionality for library users. The information services team will also be carrying out important work this year, improving our asset management systems and business continuity and disaster recovery response capabilities. Recent in-house surveying of user satisfaction with our information technology systems and the support provided by the information services team reveals mostly mid to upper quartile results when benchmarked against 10 other New Zealand councils.

his will be a busy year for the council’s information services team as we try to make some significant advances in service delivery. Gordon Tupper, our information services manager, has a team of eight specialists who work right across the council on a variety of information technology projects. An information and communications technology strategy is now being drafted for the organisation. In its simplest form this will set out our existing information technology and telecommunications position and then guide us in terms of where we want to head, identifying work priorities, and resource and likely change implications. It is an important piece of work we want to get on top of reasonably early this year. A new arrival in Gordon’s team is Leonie Eruera, who is our information management specialist. We don’t have a proper electronic document and records management system in place at the moment. EDRMS technology is expensive and requires organisational-wide buy-in to work effectively. Leonie has the job of developing an overarching strategy for managing all of the council’s physical and electronic records in a way that will actually work for the people who need to access and use the information. called for a transitional government to guide the country out of the three-year war which the United Nations says has left well over 100,000 dead. The UN leader said Iran’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif had repeatedly assured him that he “understood and supported” the aim of the peace conference to set up an interim government. “(The secretary general) continues to urge Iran to join the global consensus behind the Geneva communique,” said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky. “Given that it has chosen to remain outside that basic understanding, he has decided that the one-day Montreux gathering will proceed without Iran’s participation.” Ban was “dismayed” by the storm growing around the peace conference, the most intense diplomatic bid yet to end

the near three-year war. UN officials said Zarif had apparently promised Ban a statement accepting the Geneva communique would be made. But just before the UN announcement, Iran’s envoy to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaee, reaffirmed his government’s rejection of conditions for attending this week’s meeting. The Syrian National Coalition, the main opposition, welcomed Ban’s about turn and said it would be in Switzerland this week. The conference still faces major obstacles which were highlighted by new attacks spilling over into Syria’s neighbours and Assad’s refusal to consider standing down _ a key demand of the Syrian opposition. A double suicide car bombing at a border post controlled by moderate Islamist rebels be-

tween Syria and Turkey killed at least 16 people on Monday, a monitoring group said. And adding to the tensions, Assad bluntly ruled out a power-sharing deal in an AFP interview, insisting that the peace conference should focus on what he called his “war against terrorism”. Assad adopted a combative tone, dismissing the opposition as having been “created” by foreign backers. A US official said Washington had received messages from members of the Damascus regime keen to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. But the dispute over Iran and Assad’s future is likely to spill over into the Geneva talks, diplomats said. Russia, a key sponsor of the talks and also an Assad ally, said Iran’s absence would be a “unforgivable mistake.” - AFP

Tourist numbers swell International tourist numbers surged to nearly 1.1 billion in 2013 with growth in the Asia-Pacific region leading the industry to a strong year despite global economic troubles, the World Tourism Organisation says. The number of international tourist arrivals grew by five per cent from the previous year to 1.09 billion in 2013, said the Madrid-based UN body. That figure is expected to grow again by 4.0-4.5 per cent in 2014, the organisation said. - AFP

‘Sorcerer’ decapitated A Cambodian man was decapitated in a frenzied attack by villagers after he was accused of being a sorcerer in a nation where belief in black magic remains strong, police say. The victim, 55-year-old Khieu Porn, was hacked to death with axes by unknown attackers at the weekend when villagers were celebrating a rice harvest ceremony, according to Som Chantha, a district police chief in the southern province of Kampong Speu. The man was killed by at least six suspects a short distance from the ceremony site, he said, adding he was a traditional healer who fell under suspicion after a number of people died in his home area. - AFP

A bottle of malt whisky has gone under the hammer in Hong Kong for the record-breaking sum of HK$4.9 million ($A718,070). The Macallan ‘M’ Decanter 6-litre Imperiale attracted global interest at a Sotheby’s auction, the firm said in a statement which identified the buyer only as an Asian private collector. Sotheby’s said the bottle broke the record for any single malt whisky bottle sold at auction, surpassing the $US460,000 paid in New York in 2010. - AFP

Royal teams to merge The Prince of Wales’ communications team is to merge with its counterpart at Buckingham Palace - a major development towards Charles’ future role as king. Charles’ communications secretary Sally Osman will be in charge of the combined press office with the new title of communications director. The development is not only a physical move but a symbolic one as the Prince’s staff will leave their Clarence House offices for Buckingham Palace likely to be the prince’s official home when he is head of state. There is also speculation that Charles will take on a more prominent role supporting the Queen in her official duties. With the Queen, 87, and Duke of Edinburgh, 92, advancing in years it is thought Charles may carry out long-haul overseas engagements on behalf of his mother. Charles has already represented the Queen at a major summit of Commonwealth leaders in Sri Lanka. Charles’ press office was set up in the early 1990s and will merge with Buckingham Palace’s communications team in the coming weeks. - PA

In brief

Iran out of Syria peace talks UN leader Ban Ki-moon has abruptly excluded Iran from this week’s Syria peace conference after it refused to back calls for a transitional government to end the country’s war. Ban withdrew a surprise invitation to Iran less than 24 hours after it had been made, bidding to save the talks which start in the Swiss town of Montreux tomorrow. The UN secretary-general was forced to act yesterday after the Syrian opposition threatened to withdraw from the talks if Iran takes part. The US also demanded the invitation be withdrawn if Iran did not support a Syria declaration adopted by major world powers in Geneva in 2012. Iran is a major backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has reaffirmed that he would not stand down. The Geneva declaration had

Anti-protest laws come into effect Controversial anti-protest laws which sparked unprecedented riots in Ukraine have come into force as the latest standoff between thousands of protesters and anti-riot police in Kiev moved into a third day. The new laws, which ban nearly all forms of protest in the ex-Soviet country, were officially published in the newspaper of the Ukrainian parliament after a warning from President Viktor Yanukovych

that the violence threatened the entire country. They allow for jail terms of up to five years for those who blockade public buildings and the arrest of protesters wearing masks or helmets. Other provisions ban the dissemination of “slander” on the internet. The move to bring them into force came despite calls from the West and the opposition to bin the legislation, raising fears that the authorities could use the restrictions

to resort to violence to disperse the protest. Clashes on Monday and yesterday, which followed two months of protests, turned the centre of the capital Kiev into a veritable war zone as some 10,000 demonstrators battled security forces. The clashes erupted after a rally of some 200,000 people against the restrictions on protesting was pushed through by Yanukovych supporters in parliament on Sunday. - AFP

Vietnam has confirmed its first human death from bird flu in nine months. To Duc Sinh, director of Preventive Medicine Center in southern Binh Phuoc province, said Tuesday that a 52-year-old man died of the H5N1 strain of bird flu on January 18 on the way to a hospital in southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City. Sinh said the man developed a fever and other symptoms on January 11 after he slaughtered a duck bought in the village where chickens died of unknown reasons several days later. - AP

Parole hearing soon Prison authorities in Indonesia say they are likely to make a final recommendation on Schapelle Corby’s parole application within weeks. A spokesman for the Indonesian Corrections Department, Ayub Suratman, has confirmed Corby’s case is set to be heard before the end of the month, paving the way for the 36-year-old’s release, more than nine years after she was jailed for drug smuggling. The hearing would be held behind closed doors in Jakarta, after which a recommendation will be sent to Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin for final approval. - AAP

A waterfront dispute has broken out between two of New Zealand’s biggest ports, arguing about who is the best. The argument over whether Ports of Auckland or Port of Tauranga is best erupted after a glowing Morningstar report called Port of Tauranga Australasia’s most productive, efficient port. Matt Ball, head of communications at the Ports of Auckland, disputed the claim, saying Morningstar had got it wrong when it came to which port was most efficient. “Times have changed down on the waterfront and Tauranga no longer has everything its own way,” Ball told The Herald. “When you look at the speed with which ships are handled, it is Ports of Auckland which comes out on top. Latest Ministry of Transport figures show Ports of Auckland has been leading on two out of the three port productivity measures since 2012. In the most recent quarter Auckland’s ship rate - the speed with which ships are loaded and unloaded - was 17 per cent higher than Tauranga,” Ball said. The glowing Morningstar report said Port of Tauranga trade volumes in 2012 had increased by

20 per cent. The amount of cargo handled from 15.4 million tonnes to 18.5 million tonnes, in the face of subdued international trade. Last week, the port announced a continued national expansion by buying up 15ha of commercial land in Canterbury to create a new inland port, partly to capitalise on the lucrative dairy export trade. The company is buying land in the Izone Industrial Park at Rolleston for a freight hub or village, after last year spending $21.6 million to buy a half-share of Prime Port Timaru and $37.2 million expanding at Onehunga, where it already has its MetroPort inland port operations.

Chief executive Mark Cairns said the new Rolleston site would be an export hub for primary products and particularly dairy exports, fish and fruit and the business could spend about $20 million on the land and infrastructure although no price was disclosed because the deal remains conditional. The site is in the middle of a diary mecca, north of one of Fonterra’s largest sites, Clandeboye, processing up to 13.2 million litres of milk a day, about 40 per cent of all Fonterra South Island milk. Synlait’s plant is south at Rakaia and Cairns noted how Westland Milk Products was also at Rolleston.- APNZ

Time to get cracking with tomatoes

T

omatoes in home gardens are ripening rapidly and commercially grown ones are also appearing in shops with low price tags. And that means it’s time to make sauce, chutney and generally enjoy tomatoes in their prime.

■ Preheat oven to 190°C. ■ Place the tomato halves and garlic cut side up on a baking tray. ■ Drizzle with oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. ■ Roast 1 hour in preheated oven. ■ Snip the ends off the garlic cloves ■ Squeeze the insides into a blender along with the entire contents of the baking tray. ■ Add stock, basil and vinegar; blend until smooth ■ Reheat and season to taste.

Tomato relish 500g fresh tomatoes 2 medium onions 2 cloves garlic 1C raw sugar 1/2 C cider vinegar 2t salt 2t curry powder 2t mustard powder 2t cornflour 1-2T extra vinegar ■ Cut a small cross on the top of each tomato. ■ Place in large bowl, cover with boiling water, leave for a minute. ■ Drain and rinse with cold water, peel off skins. ■ Roughly chop the tomatoes; finely chop the onions and garlic. ■ Place the tomatoes, onions, garlic, sugar, vinegar and salt in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce to a medium heat and gently cook for 15-20 mins. ■ Mix the curry powder, mustard and cornflour with the extra vinegar to a smooth paste. ■ Stir into the tomatoes and cook until thickened. ■ Spoon into warm, sterilised jars and seal. ■ Refrigerate once opened.

■ WATERSKIING

In brief

Lachie at home on the water By Toni Williams

Toni.w@The guardian.co.nz

Lachie Woodman is 13 years old and, along with 23 team-mates, will represent his country waterskiing in the Oz-Kiwi Challenge at Lake Hood this weekend. Woodman was a former Ashburton Intermediate School pupil but is heading to Ashburton College this year. He has been waterskiing since he was four years old, and also snow skis, plays hockey and squash. He learned to waterski on shore, using mum, Tracey’s, old skis before getting actual time on the water. He is from a family of waterskiers with both mum and dad, Barry, social skiers and older sister Gabriella, in the Kiwi under-17 team. Woodman’s grandparents were also keen waterskiers and set up a club in the Waikato. Woodman started skiing for fun before he was seven years old. Now, he is more competitive and a personal goal is to get to the Junior World Championships in 2016. Last season, at nationals in the under 14s, Woodman placed second in trick, third in jump and third overall. This week he will lap up the experience of international competition. It is his second time in the Kiwi team, but his first time competing - last year he was named in the reserves but not required to travel. He enjoys learning to do something new, and his best trick is a Wake Five, a one and a half spin on one leg. He trains as often as he can with his family, and it is not unusual for them to be on the water up to four hours a day.

Kearney favoured Stephen Kearney is the favourite to retain the Kiwis coaching job, despite what happened in last year’s World Cup final, but the NZRL want to test the market to see if a better alternative crops up. Kearney has been in the job since 2008, when he took over from Gary Kemble, and oversaw the successful 2008 World Cup and 2010 Four Nations campaigns. But he has come under considerable scrutiny since the Kiwis were demolished by a slick Australian outfit in last year’s World Cup final. Kearney has indicated he will reapply, saying he wants to continue what he has built on during his tenure. - APNZ

CYCLE RACE

SATURDAY 1 MARCH 2014

World No.3 David Ferrer bumped a linesman and was then bounced out of the Australian Open as Czech Tomas Berdych achieved two significant Melbourne Park breakthroughs. Berdych, the seventh seed, beat Ferrer 6-1 6-4 2-6 6-4 yesterday to reach the Open semi-finals for the first time in his career. Not only did the big Czech break that streak, but he also won inside Melbourne Park’s showpiece court, Rod Laver Arena, for the first time, in his 11th Australian Open. - AAP

Johny Rock causes a flap at trials BY SUE NEWMAN

American pacer Johny Rock lived up to his name with a rockstar style tantrum on debut at Ashburton yesterday. The four-year-old entire, imported by a Kiwi syndicate to race and later stand at stud, made a spectacular first appearance in Ashburton in a trials heat that saw him attracting attention – for all the wrong reasons.

With local driver Ricky May in the sulky, the horse with the big reputation was led reluctantly onto the track. He was unsettled from the moment he stepped out and his warm-up lasted just a few seconds. Johny Rock reared and bucked while May yelled, flapped his reins and tried to haul him back into line. The horse thought he’d had the final say when he smashed his sulky, tossed his gear and threw May onto the track. Trainers

Paul and Graham Court, however had other ideas. A new sulky was found, the horse was re-geared and a plucky May committed to another attempt at racing. While it was only a two horse race, the American raider showed he could well be a force to reckon with when he finds his Kiwi feet. Up against star three-yearold Tiger Tara, who is unbeaten this season, Johny Rock settled

into his work, with May initially happy just to have the horse settled and rolling. At about the 1000 metre mark May mounted a challenge to Gerard O’Reilly and Tiger Tara and poured on the pace with Johny Rock striding out and showing what he could be capable of when his mind’s on the job. Tiger Tara, however was quick to respond, upping the pace and sprinting to win by two

and a half lengths, running the 2400m in 2.59.6, 800m 56.5 and last quarter, 27.2. The Ashburton run was Johny Rock’s second in New Zealand, after an outing at Rangiora trials last week. The Rocknroll HanoverSoggy Britches entire has nine wins from his 25 starts in North America for stakes of almost $500,000. As a two-year-old he raced on 10 occasions for four wins.
