Crackdown on gangs Two arrested after stoush BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A six-month-old baby was abandoned in a car as an offender fled police following an armed gang stoush in Ashburton on Wednesday. Police carried out a dramatic operation in Allenton after being alerted to the incident by members of the public at about 3.30pm, a police spokesperson said. A man was arrested after the vehicle he was in rammed another vehicle as he tried to flee police on Clark Street, following an altercation between people with gang connections that reportedly involved firearms. The other occupant, the driver

of a black SUV, fled the scene and headed towards Racecourse Road, where he abandoned the vehicle and took off on foot. Police yesterday confirmed a “distressed” baby was left alone in the vehicle as the man ran from police. Detective Sergeant Kevin Holder said the fact that someone would abandon a baby was “just unbelievable”. “The fact that someone would behave in that manner, we’re absolutely shocked,” he said. Mr Holder said the infant had been returned to its mother. The female driver of the rammed vehicle, who does not want to be named, said a man armed with a gun and a knife

had entered a property and demanded drugs before stealing items of jewellery. The car rammed the front of her vehicle as the occupants attempted to flee police, she said. The armed offenders squad and police dog handlers worked with other officers as they carried out enquiries at a number of nearby properties. People in surrounding properties were advised to stay inside as police converged on a house on the corner of Russell Avenue and Racecourse Road. A second man was arrested at the property without incident. Newstalk ZB reported that Rua Rimene, who police say has gang connections, has been

charged with carrying a shotgun, robbing a woman using two knives and intentionally damaging Housing New Zealand property, as well as a string of driving offences. The 23-year-old was arrested alongside a 31-year-old man charged with possession of an offensive weapon. The 31-year-old Ashburton man will appear in Ashburton District Court on Monday. Rimene appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday, and will reappear in the court next Thursday. The incident comes as police look to crack down on drug and gang-related crime. Canterbury police have

launched a new operation, titled Operation Focus, which aims to change the way police respond to drug-related offending and reduce victimisation. Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam of Canterbury police’s organised crime unit said the change in attitude towards drug offending would become part of “business as usual” policing. The operation has three key interventions, including reducing the opportunity for crime to occur, rehabilitating offenders, and redirecting offenders into other areas such as employment, sports, and culture. Operation Focus will run during April and May. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!

Campbell Live on the chopping block? TV3 bosses have told Campbell Live staff the channel is thinking of canning the current affairs show for a daily version of the Jono and Ben entertainment show. That is one of the options in a “consultative document” handed out this week, which left Campbell Live staff shell-shocked. The move follows a period of poor ratings at the show and TV3’s drift away from news and into entertainment. A TV3 source said Campbell Live staff turned up at the regular editorial meeting and were met by the head of news and current affairs, Mark Jennings, and a human resources legal representative. One TV3 staffer said that while the document suggested options, staff felt closure was inevitable because the programme did not have the support of chief executive Mark Weldon and MediaWorks director Julie Christie. The document asked: “Is the 7pm slot still the right time for hard hitting current affairs in the changing landscape of media consumption?”

Best way to lose weight While Australians spend more than $600 million a year on weight loss programmes, a new US study shows only two have proven long-term results. Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are both effective in helping people shed kilos and keep them off, according to researchers at John Hopkins University. Jenny Craig participants lost on average at least 6.8kg and kept it off for a year, while Weight Watchers dieters shed at least 3.6kg and kept it off for at least 12 months, team leader Dr Kimberly Gudzune said. Of 32 major diet programmes sold in the US, they found only 11 had been rigorously studied. “Other popular programmes, such as Nutrisystem, show promising weight-loss results; however, additional studies evaluating long-term outcomes are needed,” they wrote in the study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Three other systems, Health Management Resources, Medifast and OPTIFAST, show short-term weightloss but whether they result in long-term loss is unclear, they said. Of the five self-directed programmes analysed, Atkins showed greater short-term weight loss.

It’s taken 15 emergency crew members to rescue a 160kg man who fell down a Sydney stormwater drain. Rescue teams were called to Meadowbank in Sydney’s west about 11pm on Wednesday with reports a man was trapped in a drain. It took an hour for firefighters, paramedics and police to extract the man from the hole using ropes and ladders due to injuries he sustained to his shoulder and leg. “In order to get him out they had to set up a ladder and put him on a stokes stretcher and slide him up,” NSW Fire & Rescue Superintendent Tom Cooper said. Due to the size of the man it took 15 firefighters, ambulance and the police to get him out of the drain.

Male long-distance runners are not only fitter than most they may also find it easier to attract women, researchers say. People who are better at running half marathons are likely to have been exposed to high levels of the sex hormone testosterone before birth, researchers from the University of Cambridge have found. This means they not only have better cardiovascular efficiency but also a strong sex drive and high sperm count suggesting they have historically been chosen by women as more desirable mates. Dr Danny Longman, from the university’s division of biological anthropology, said: “The observation that endurance running ability is connected to reproductive potential in men suggests that women in our hunter-gatherer past were able to observe running as a signal for a good breeding partner.” Pre-birth exposure to testosterone has previously been found to give men an evolutionary advantage. The latest research focused on half marathon competitors and found the faster runners also tended to also have longer ring fingers - a signal of hormone exposure in the womb.

Striding towards success A lot can happen in a year. Just ask Vaughan Couillault, principal of James Cook High School, which was labelled “worst school in Auckland” for 2014 and is now among the top performers in the newly released NCEA results. “It is a long road and we are not done yet,” Mr Couillault says. “But it is inspiring. Every day. Because of the work that our students and all our staff are doing.” James Cook, a co-ed decile one school in Manurewa, has achieved some of the most impressive improvement rates in Auckland across all NCEA levels. At level one, for example, it had a year-on-year increase of 25.2 per cent to see 95.3 per cent of students pass the standard. To put things in context, nationally around 85 per cent of learners achieve at Level 1.

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Hybrid ECan governance plan backed By sue newman

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton District Council has put a stake in the ground, supporting the Government’s proposed hybrid governance structure for Environment Canterbury. While there has been a call from several quarters for a return to a fully democratically elected council for ECan in the 2016 local body elections, the government has made it very clear it prefers a mix of elected members and government appointees. Yesterday associate local government minister Louise Upston told Ashburton District councillors why the mixed member governance model was the best option for the organisation, but said through the submission process the council and the community could have their say. The Government appointed commissioners to govern ECan in 2010 after considerable community dissatisfaction with its performance and following a request from Canterbury’s mayors for intervention. Over the past five years, ECan had reshaped itself and was now working efficiently and effectively, Ms Upston said. Retaining some government appointees on its governance team would ensure the progress made over the past five

years was not lost and it would also ensure the right mix of people were in charge of decision making, she said. “It ensures Canterbury has a democratically elected voice but that there’s a good mix of skills around the table. We need to maintain the high performance standard ECan has achieved; back in time it was highly dysfunctional but now it’s an incredibly high performing organisation.” The key in moving away from a full commissioner governance was ensuring the transition was smooth and no gains were lost, Ms Upston said. While councillors supported the hybrid governance model they were not united in their support for the seven appointee, six elected member split. And they were less than happy with the proposal to have three councillors elected from Christchurch city and just one each from North, Mid and South Canterbury. The governance team might be a mix of appointees and elected members, but all would be equal in terms of their power around the council table, she said. The only dissenting voice around the council table was councillor Ken Cutforth. “I’m hot on the idea of a fully democratic election. “This is undemocratic to me, I can’t support it,” he said.

Cellphone use driving earns fines By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury motorists are increasingly flouting the rules and using cellphones while driving. However the risky move has hit drivers in the pocket - to the tune of over $40,000. Police figures show 550 people in the Mid/South Canter-

bury district were caught using cellphones while driving last year. That was a 32 per cent jump from 2013, when 416 infringements notices were issued. Using a handheld phone while driving, even if the vehicle is stationary, has been illegal since November 2009. The number of people using

phones while they’re behind the wheel has been steadily increasing since the law came into effect. In 2010 just 210 infringements were issued in the region - less than half the number of tickets dished out last year. Mid/South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said people breaking the rules with cellphones was a problem nationwide. “People believe they have a God-given right to use a cellphone in a car, and they don’t,” he said. He said fines for breaching the rules came with demerit points, meaning repeat offenders could face losing their licence. “It’s simple to stop on the side of the road,” he said. “There would be nothing worse than being in an accident, or causing an accident, where you were distracted by using a cellphone.”

■ NEW ZEALAND PRINCIPALS’ FEDERATION

In brief

Tensions ease one year on By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

Tensions in the education sector have eased and principals country wide are feeling more optimistic, according to the president of the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association. Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy recently attended the New Zealand Principals’ Federation moot in Wellington. The annual event sees re-

gional school representatives and politicians meet to discuss the imminent future of education in New Zealand. Last year’s event was full of tension, with uncertainty over the position of the sector during a tumultuous election year. Education was a major talking point of the election, with a series of controversial policies and initiatives shaking up the sector. “There was a very tangible

sense of apprehension amongst the group,” Mr Murphy said. However the outlook seems a lot brighter this year. Mr Murphy said there was a general feeling of optimism for education among attendees. The theme of this year’s moot was ‘taking the lead’, with guest speakers discussing how principals could show leadership in areas such as ICT, professional development, and special needs.

Discussions were also held about raising the achievement of Maori and Pasifika students. The moot was very positive, Mr Murphy said. “My take home message is that we’re in good stead, and the general feeling of optimism in the profession was very noticeable,” he said. “We’ve got a minister now who has moved from the ‘blame game’ and is now working with the sector, which is good.”

Another anxious night The families of two fishermen missing at Port Waikato face another anxious night, after a third day of searching failed to find any signs of the pair. Arthur Brown, 67, of Tuakau, and a 57-year-old friend from Pahiatua, had been fishing in the area on Easter Monday. They were reported missing when they did not return that night. Their boat - a 5.7m runabout - was found capsized on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, search teams managed to access the boat, revealing the two mates were not inside. Nothing else of note was discovered, police said. The police Eagle helicopter spent a third day scouring the area for signs of the pair, but no progress was made yesterday, a police spokeswoman said. - NZME

New Zealand is one of only three countries in the world where the non-religious are expected to outnumber the religious by 2050, according to new research. New Zealand will join France and the Netherlands as having the religiously unaffiliated – referring to atheists, agnostics and those who do not identify with a religion – as the majority group in 35 years time. It is a trend in contrast to most other countries in the world, which will see an increase in Christianity and a sharp rise in Muslim populations. Islam is the world’s fastest growing religion, ac-

The theme for this year’s congress is Living in Harmony and youth who have a strong interest in global issues are urged to apply for a place via the Unicef website. Applications close Friday, May 15.

Tourism workshop Experience Mid Canterbury is holding a workshop later this month designed to help local tourism operators understand how they can take advantage of the work Tourism New Zealand is doing in off-shore markets. Guest speaker Paul Trowell will provide tips and pointers on where the national organisation is taking its tourism drive, how individual operators can get involved and how they can leverage off the work being done by the organisation and by Experience Mid Canterbury. Operators can register for the April 22 workshop by contacting Experience Mid Canterbury on 308-2669.

cording to new figures from the Pew Research Centre, with Muslims expected to make up 30 per cent of the world’s population by 2050 – on near parity with Christians, at 31 per cent of the global population, for the first time in history. However, New Zealand is one of eight countries where the Christian majority is expected to drop below 50 per cent of the population – alongside Australia, Benin, Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, the Netherlands, the Republic of Macedonia and the United Kingdom. By 2050, Pew believes 45.1 per cent of New Zealand’s population will be the unaffiliated - making it the largest religious group in the country.

Only France (44.1 per cent) and the Netherlands (49.1 per cent) saw a similar projection, the centre said in its Future of World Religions study. But Dr Nick Thompson, lecturer in theology at the University of Auckland, believed this was a conservative estimate. “I think it will be over 50 per cent well before the 2050 figure that the Pew people give,” he said. Pointing at the last two censuses, he said there had been a more than 10 per cent jump in the number of people who identified as non religious from 2006 to 2013. “It’s pretty clear.” The only factor that would slow that increase would be immigration from countries

Dr Thompson said New Zealand was “at the forefront of a trend” in a rising non-religious community. “In world terms we’re a real outlier. Religion is resurgent everywhere else in the world, so we’re quite strange in that respect,” he said. - NZME

Firefighters remain on the scene of a central Auckland office block where hundreds of workers were evacuated from yesterday following a fire in a chimney duct. Thick smoke was seen billowing out the top of Federal House on Federal Street around 2pm. ■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Roundabout tipped for Tinwald By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

When it came to finding solutions to traffic problems in Tinwald, Ashburton is caught between a rock and a hard place, says Ashburton District councillor Alasdair Urquhart. While the council and the community have been fighting to have traffic lights installed along State Highway 1 in Tinwald, that option hasn’t found favour with the New Zealand Transport Agency, the organisation that would be footing the bill. A draft programme business case has been prepared in consultation with the agency and a group of community and council representatives, and it leaves traffic lights off the list, replacing them with a roundabout at Grahams Road and options that will channel traffic at several intersections. And while that might not be ideal, it seems it’s the best Ashburton is going to get, Mr Urquhart said. “We probably have to accept what NZTA tells us they’re going to do. It takes so long to get anything through the eightstage process. We’re at stage four going on to five and if we stop now I don’t know when

An open road today, but in the future the intersection of Grahams Road and State Highway 1 could be the site of a roundabout. PHOTO TETSURO MITOMO 090415-TM-040

we’ll get anything done. We’re just a small drop in the ocean compared to Auckland,” he said. Mr Urquhart believes the transport agency has underestimated the speed at which traffic volumes are increasing through Ashburton. He recommended the council

endorsed the draft Tinwald corridor business case even though it did not include the traffic lights the council wanted. “We have to start somewhere.” Councillor Russell Ellis said he couldn’t support the business case because of a timeframe that wouldn’t see the roundabout

built for six years. He asked NZTA highway manager for Canterbury Colin Knaggs if Ashburton could have traffic lights if the council was prepared to pay for them, but was told that even with council cash, the lights would have to be looked at in conjunction

with over all traffic movements through town. Whatever the long term solutions might be, it was important a start was made now with the first stage solutions to ensure traffic was able to flow along the highway, councillor Stuart Wilson said.

Prison units to close; hundreds of jobs lost By NicholaS JoNeS

Members of the New Zealand Navy unload the REMUS sonar as they join the search for the missing kayaker.

Search continues for kayaker New Zealand Defence Force personnel have joined the search for a kayaker missing on Lake Coleridge. In a statement yesterday police confirmed the New Zealand Navy and other defence personnel were working alongside search and rescue teams to locate the man, who went missing on the lake on Saturday afternoon. Police divers from Wellington started an underwater search on Sunday morning of

the area the man was last seen in. So far they have searched over an acre of the silty and rocky lake floor, but there has been no sign of him. The navy joined the search on Wednesday by deploying the REMUS sonar to scan a further 700 x 300 metre area. A defence force spokesperson has confirmed the missing man is a member of the NZ Army who is understood to have gone on his own to Lake Coleridge for a recreational trip.

He was not participating in any military exercise or training, the spokesperson said. No details of the missing man have been released. According to the police statement, the man’s family are being supported by the NZ Army and Canterbury police and have asked for privacy while the search continues. Coleridge Intake Road will remain closed from Algidus Road to the intake while the recovery operation is under way.

Hundreds of prison staff will lose their jobs as units in Waikeria, Tongariro-Rangipo and Rimutaka Prisons are closed. About 260 staff are expected to lose their jobs over the next year in a proposal announced yesterday. Department of Corrections chief executive Ray Smith said the closures of the older prison units coincided with the development of newer facilities elsewhere in the country. “Corrections will help [affected staff] move to other prisons if they wish.” The job losses come as the brutal death of an inmate puts a spotlight on prison safety. Benton Marni Parata, 44, was attacked by several inmates in his cell at Christchurch Men’s Prison’s high-security Rawhiti unit last month. The closures will save around $20 million, plus capital costs of up to $145 million had the units remained open. “I understand that this proposal may be unsettling for affected staff but Corrections

will have extensive support and assistance in place should the proposal go ahead,” Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga said. The Department of Corrections said the closure of the prison units will coincide with the opening of the new 960-bed Auckland South Corrections Facility. The new prison will be run by private company Serco. Corrections will help affected staff move to other prisons, where there are vacancies. Corrections Association industrial officer Beven Hanlon said yesterday’s announcement was, put simply, the privatisation of corrections jobs. “This Auckland prison ... The Government committed to this in the worst recession this country has ever seen. It was a $900 million commitment. “We didn’t need the prison at the time. We said that at the time. We said, if they build this prison it will cost public service jobs. “And this is the second round of losses that we have had because of it.” - NZME

Prayers answered for restoration By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton town centre Baring Square Methodist Church parishioners are planning to be back worshipping in their historic church building by Christmas next year. The 1925 landmark building was shut down after the 2010 September earthquake, triggering years of soul searching for parishioners as they decided whether to demolish or restore the building. Parishioners have now decided restoration is best, depending on final costings. They have about $1 million to spend after receiving an insurance payout and funds from other sources. Steward Brian Reesby said a breakthrough in enabling restoration to go ahead had been the assurance that the church would still have money to pay its minister. It had applied to a national Methodist presidents’ earthquake fund. “We have been fortunate to be granted money from that, that’s for support of ministry not buildings.” The restoration would involve an altered

interior to make it more user-friendly, and would be expected to take about 18 months. “If restoration costs come back higher than what they originally estimated it could be a bit tricky, but we have been led to believe some of these restoration jobs are not costing as much as originally feared.” He said he was hoping for final costs to come back soon and work to begin, and hopefully by Christmas next year services would be able to return to the building. Parishioner and property convenor Ken Leadley said restoration of the building would include strengthening work. The building was generally in good shape and a spiral staircase to a public lookout at the top, which he helped install in the 1990s, was still useable. A scarecrow bird had been recently installed and was successfully keeping pigeons, which had increased in number since the building wasn’t being used, at bay. He was not sure if the church’s organ, one of the best in Ashburton, would still be useable after having gathered dust for almost five years.

Right - Baring Square Methodist church property convenor Ken Leadley, at the church in 2012, will be pleased to see the church’s many unique features retained if restoration goes ahead.

Life hacks at basics expo

Parole denied Convicted baby killer Elizabeth Healy has been denied parole after an “abysmal” performance after her release from prison. Healy was jailed in 1998 on a life sentence of preventive detention for the murder of 17-month-old Shae Hammond, along with concurrent terms for injuring with intent and poisoning another child. She was granted parole in May 2013 but was recalled to prison in November last year for breaching her release conditions. The board declined parole, noting more work was required to prevent a repeat of “the multitude of serious lapses that occurred”. - NZME

People who want to learn more about natural savvy living have the chance to do so this weekend at the Back to Basics expo. The expo has been organised by Julia Crosson and Katie Esler, and is in its second year. Ninety people are booked in and keen to share their techniques, up from 80 last year. Site holders include people with tips and tricks about food preservation, low cost nutritious meals, composting, natural remedies and even sewing, darning and spinning. Mrs Crosson said this year the event will be indoor and outdoor, occupying the bowling green at the New Life Church premises in Tinwald. “Because it’s starting at 11am there will be food included, there’s a soup kitchen, and some food vans,” she said. Other than learning, people who attend will be able to do things like purchase solar cooking kits, talk to community ser-

vices such as counselling and budget advice, and join various community groups. “In a nutshell, it’s using the resources that are around us, here, helping to reduce your

cost of living and connecting the community.” The event is a family one and Mrs Crosson said there would also be “old school games” such as walking on tins and sack rac-

es, which kids can try. The expo will be at the New Life Church premises, 58 Melcombe Street, Tinwald, on Saturday, from 11am until 3pm and entry is free.

The identity of a Canterbury businessman who is alleged to have put a man in hospital and killed a puppy in a case of extreme road rage can now be revealed. Police allege Andrew McDaniel, 51, repeatedly ran down the victim injuring his ankle, back and shoulder, missing his head by centimetres. The victim’s puppy had to be euthanised after being struck by the vehicle. McDaniel’s bid for continued name suppression was denied in the Christchurch District Court. He has indicated he will plead not guilty. McDaniel will reappear in court on April 23. - NZME

OUR VIEW

ECan’s success lies in well planned guidance Sue Newman

CHIEF REPORTER

I

n the five years a team of government appointees has taken Environment Canterbury from a dysfunctional organisation to one that runs like a well oiled machine. The government has signalled that now the hard work is done, democracy will return to the organisation in the next local body elections, but how that’s done will be key when it comes to ensuring the gains of the past are not lost for the future. It’s signalled the new governance team will be a hybrid mix of appointees and elected members. That’s probably the best outcome possible. The best of the proven structure is retained, with a gradual return to Canterbury running its own ship. There’s a big call for the government to butt out, to hand back the reins to the people and to let ECan be run by the people and for the people. That didn’t work in the past, why would it work in the future? Unlike territorial local authorities, ECan is an organisation that embraces a region that crosses all boundaries in terms of its work. Its focus is environmental, but what makes up an environmental issue depends where you live; town, city, country, the concerns are all different. And that’s where ECan came unstuck. In its elected membership it was city heavy but the main thrust of its work needed to be in the country. Over the past five years that’s exactly where its energies have been directed – water, effluent discharge, stream and river health – the list is endless. Yes there’ve been town and city issues, such as air pollution, but the commissioners, with their lack of allegiance to any sector have been able to push money and energy in the right direction. A return to a fully elected governance team would put all of that work at risk as elected members inevitably come with their own sector interests.

The return of Iran

“T

his (Arab) nation, in its darkest hour, has never faced a challenge to its existence and a threat to its identity like the one it’s facing now,” said General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, now the ruler of Egypt. And you wanted to say: Not the Crusades? Not the Mongol invasion? Not even the European conquest of the entire Arab world between 1830 and 1920? You really think the gravest threat ever to Arab existence and identity is a bunch of tribal warriors in Yemen? Sisi was addressing the Arab League summit in Cairo last week that created a new panArab military force to confront this threat, so overheated rhetoric was standard issue, but still .... The air forces of Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbours are blasting Yemen from the air, and there is talk of Saudi Arabian, Egyptian, and even Pakistani troops invading on the ground, but it all smells more of panic than of strategic calculation. The panic is because the status quo that has prevailed in the Middle East since approximately 1980 is at an end. Iran is back, and there is great dismay in the palaces of Riyadh—especially because it was Saudi Arabia’s great friend and ally, the United States, who finally set Iran free. It was the agreement in Lausanne last Thursday (April 2) between Iran and the group of 5+1 (the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany) that marked the end of the status quo. It was about ending the various trade embargoes against Iran in return for 10 to 15 years of strict controls on Iran’s nuclear power program, but it will also let Iran out of the jail it has been confined to since the 1979 revolution. Initially that revolution was quite scary for Iran’s Arab neighbours, because Iran’s example in overthrowing the local pro-Western ruler and taking a stronger stand against Israel was very popular in the

Tehran, Iran

Arab street. The solution was to paint Iran as a crazy terrorist state and isolate it as much as possible from the rest of the region. The other tactic that the conservative Arab states deployed was to stress the religious gulf between Iran (which is 90 percent Shia) and the Arab countries (whose people are at least 85 percent Sunni). The doctrinal differences are real, but they do not normally make ordinary people see one another as natural enemies unless somebody (like state propaganda) works hard at it. Those measures worked for 20 years, assisted by some really stupid Iranian actions like holding U.S. embassy personnel hostage for 444 days, but by the end of the 20th century they were losing credibility. What saved the “quarantine” policy in 2002 was the discovery that Tehran had been working on nuclear weapons design. The work was a revival of research that had been started during the US-backed Iraqi invasion of Iran in 1980-88 (when Saddam Hussein certainly was working on nuclear weapons), and was shut down afterwards. It was restarted in 1998, almost certainly in re-

sponse to the nuclear weapons tests by Pakistan, Iran’s eastern neighbour. It was Iran being stupid again, but it was probably never about Israel. The alleged Iranian nuclear threat provided the basis for another decade and more of political quarantine and trade embargoes that have crippled Iran economically and isolated it politically. All that came to a sudden end last week with the agreement in principle in Lausanne (unless the Saudi Arabian and Israeli lobbies in Washington manage to torpedo the deal in the next few months). Iran has about the same population and GDP as Egypt, the biggest Arab country by far, but it is far closer both to the Arab Gulf states and to the Sunni-Shia battlegrounds in Iraq and Syria (both of whose governments are closely linked to Tehran). That’s what Sisi was really talking about when he spoke of an existential threat to Arab existence and identity. However, he’s still talking through his hat. Arab existence and identity are nowhere at risk, and Iran has no need to paint the Sunni Arab countries as enemies. The Iranian regime may be losing its support among the young

(or maybe not), but it has absolutely no need to inoculate them against the attraction of Arab political systems and foreign policies by promoting an Arab-Iranian confrontation. They hold no attraction whatever for young Iranians. As for the notion that the Houthi militia that now controls most of Yemen is really an Iranian tool (which is the main justification for the military intervention there), it is nonsense. The Houthis, like the Iranians, are Shias, but they have their own local interests to protect, and Iran has no plausible reason to want some sort of strategic foothold in Yemen. It is a safe bet that there is not now even a single armed Iranian in Yemen. If the United States could send troops into Iraq in 2003 in the delusionary belief that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, then Saudi Arabia can believe that it is fighting Iranians in Yemen now. No country has a monopoly on stupidity, and Riyadh will probably have ample opportunity to regret its mistake. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

In brief Greece repays loan Greece’s government has given the order to repay a roughly 450 million euro ($485-million) loan instalment to the International Monetary Fund — a debt Athens had insisted it will honour despite being severely cash-strapped. The debt stems from Greece’s international bailout, under which the country was extended 240 billion euros in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the IMF to prevent bankruptcy. “The order (for the repayment) has been given,” and the payment was being processed and carried out, a Finance Ministry official said. - AP

Shots fired in court Italy’s ANSA news agency reports that a man has opened fire in Milan’s courthouse and at least two persons are believed to have been hit. There was no word on their condition. ANSA quoted the president of the appeals court, Giovanni Canzio, as saying there was more than one victim. The building has been evacuated. The shooter is believed to be at large. - AP

■ UNITED STATES

Jury to decide life or death Now that a jury has convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on all charges, even more is at stake in the next phase of the federal trial: The same 12 people must decide whether the 21-year-old lives or dies. Tsarnaev was found guilty yesterday of 30 counts against him, including conspiracy and deadly use of a weapon of mass destruction. Seventeen of those charges are punishable by death. The verdict was considered practically a foregone conclu-

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

sion since Tsarnaev’s lawyer admitted he participated in the bombings. The former college student

was found responsible for the deaths of three people who died in the bombings as well as the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer who was gunned down days later as Tsarnaev and his now-dead brother, Tamerlan, attempted to flee. In addition to the people who were killed, more than 260 others were injured when twin pressure-cooker bombs packed with shrapnel exploded near the marathon’s finish line on April 15, 2013, turning the traditionally celebratory home stretch of the world-famous

race into a scene of carnage. The defence lawyers, who barely cross-examined the prosecution’s witnesses during the first part of the trial, are expected to become much more aggressive during the penalty phase, when they will make a case that Tsarnaev’s life should be spared. The defence gave a preview of its case during the trial when it insisted that the then 19-year-old Tsarnaev was strongly influenced by his radicalised older brother, who was said to have masterminded the attack. - AP

TV channels hacked by group claiming IS ties Hackers claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group seized control of a French television network, simultaneously blacking out 11 channels and taking over the network’s website and social media accounts. The attack appeared to be an unprecedented step in the extremists’ tactics. The hackers briefly cut transmission of 11 channels belonging to TV5 Monde and took over its websites and social media accounts. The channel’s director, Yves Bigot told RTL radio that the network

has restored its signal but can only broadcast recorded programmes. The Islamic extremist group has claimed complex hackings before, but the ability to black out a global television network appeared without precedent. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation into the attack. Bigot said he was shaken when he saw the black screen across the network’s broadcasts “and when we discovered the sense of the message appearing on our social media

and our websites, it both allowed us to understand what was happening and obviously worried us.” In a Facebook message that went up after the network resumed control of the site, Bigot said the “very powerful cyber attack” began Wednesday at 10pm. The message on the TV5 Monde website read in part “I am IS” with a banner by a group that called itself Cybercaliphate. That was replaced later by a simple message saying that it was undergoing

maintenance. A group with the same name hacked Newsweek’s Twitter feed in February. Prime Minister Manuel Valls, on his Twitter account, called the attack “an unacceptable insult to freedom of information and expression” and expressed his support for the editorial staff. After January terrorist attacks in France by gunmen claiming links to the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda in Yemen, officials said hackers had targeted some 19,000 French websites. - AP

Amnesty International said it has evidence that Russian-backed separatists in east Ukraine have killed several captured government soldiers in gross violation of international humanitarian law. The human rights group said in a statement that footage it has seen shows at least four Ukrainian soldiers — now confirmed dead — being interrogated by rebel militia. Pictures showing bullet wounds to the soldier’s heads and bodies appeared to show they had died as the result of summary killings, the group said. Hundreds of Ukrainian troops are believed to have been captured by rebels over the course of a year-long war that has claimed more than 6000 lives. - AP

Airstrikes ‘a mistake’ Iran’s president warned Saudi Arabia and its allies that their airstrikes’ campaign in Yemen is a “mistake” and called for a halt to the strikes targeting the Iranbacked Shiite rebels who have seized much of the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country. For two weeks now, the Saudi-led coalition has failed to stop the power grab by the Houthi rebels, whose advance has forced President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country. Both Tehran and the rebels deny that Iran is arming them. In his speech in Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged for a ceasefire in Yemen to allow for broad-based talks on resolving the crisis. - AP

They were also found guilty of using forged documents, falsifying accounts and concealing evidence. - AP

■ WELLINGTON AIRPORT

Sky City off the hook

Runway extension ‘safety risk’ BY GRANT BRADLEY

Wellington Airport: Pilots may refuse to land there.

“It just isn’t conceivable.” He said the while the current 90m was sufficient for pilots of smaller narrow body planes who were experienced landing at the airport, pilots flying long haul from Asia or other regions were likely to be unfamiliar with the airport. Wellington had the worst turbulence he had experienced

in 27 years of commercial flying and there were hills on flights paths to the airport. “If the CAA continues the current dispensation, non-Australasian pilots and or airlines may refuse to risk flying into what is already a challenging airport to land at,” said Torenvlied. Concrete tiles that slow air-

craft down could be used and require a run-off area of 130m. The airport is investigating extending the runway by 300m to 350m in an effort to try and attract longhaul flights to Wellington which it says would boost tourism and make travel from the capital more convenient. Councils have allowed for around $150m in spending plans, should the work go ahead. However, airlines are not enthusiastic with the Board of Airline Representatives saying it knew of no carriers which would fly longhaul to Wellington. “We’re not against progress to increase tourism or economic viability but it must not come at the cost of safety to passengers, pilots and crew flying in and out of Wellington.” Torenvlied said. - NZME

IT recruitment drive Software developers are the most sought-after staff in the IT profession in Auckland. New projects and increased demand will underpin a recruitment drive this year in Auckland’s information technology sector, says Absolute IT director Grant Burley. A survey found the most sought-after skills this year included software development, business analysis, project management and data or database use, topping the previous highly demanded network and infrastructure roles. - NZME

been coming from Australia in recent times that the bank would cut rates again to stimulate growth in the stagnant economy. Some of the headwinds Australia is currently facing include lacklustre growth, rising unemployment, falling iron ore prices (currently at the lowest level in over a decade), and a slowdown in China, Australia’s largest trading partner. This was the second meeting in a row when markets had been pricing in another rate cut and have been surprised when Governor Glenn Stevens has announced that they would stay on hold. The Australian dollar spiked against all major trading partners following the announcement, however has tapered off again since. The US Federal Reserve minutes were released this week and painted a picture of divergence within the committee. Leading up to the release there had been many Fed speakers, with somewhat mixed messages.

This was reiterated in the minutes which showed that some members are ready to raise rates as early as June whereas others thought that they should be waiting until at least the end of the year. The Fed have commented that they will need to continue with accommodative monetary policy until they feel the US economy can stand alone, however given recent weakness seen in economic data including a lacklustre jobs report and a slowdown in the manufacturing sector, it appears that the economy is not quite ready yet. Low wage growth, harsh winter weather and a slowdown in global demand are contributing to the stall in the recovery and keeping inflation down. Fed chair Janet Yellen has said that policy makers don’t necessarily have to see wage growth or inflation but they do need to be reasonably confident that these things will gather momentum in the near term. Equity markets in the US took this dovish tone and ran with it, making gains following the release.

Eventful week for the dollar M arkets have had a mixed week with a small number of events that have had reasonably large impacts. These events include the release of the minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting, a Reserve Bank of Australia cash rate announcement and the beginning of the reporting season in the US. New Zealand has had a short but eventful week after a long weekend due to the Easter break. The biggest news was that the New Zealand dollar came very close to reaching dollar for dollar parity with Australia, but stopped just short after the Reserve Bank of Australia’s surprise decision to hold rates. The New Zealand dollar/Aussie dollar cross rate reached a high of $0.9978, a post float high. Many analysts still believe that the currencies will reach parity although it is unlikely to be a long term situation. As mentioned above, the Reserve Bank of Australia surprised markets this week with its decision to hold rates again. The bank cut rates in February by 25 basis points taking it to an historical low of 2.25 per cent but has resisted from cutting again. It was widely thought that, given the weak data that has

The Financial Markets Authority says it found nothing of concern in trading of SkyCity Entertainment Group shares ahead of a government announcement that it wouldn’t help fund Auckland’s convention centre. The regulator worked with the NZX to look into share trading in the week of February 9-13 after receiving two complaints, including one from Winston Peters. The NZ First leader said there was a suspicious spike in the volume of SkyCity shares on Friday, February 13. The government and SkyCity announced on the following Sunday that no more taxpayer money would be put into the convention centre project. - NZME

Pilots are worried expansion plans at Wellington Airport could risk safety. The New Zealand Air Line Pilots Association says a runoff area for larger planes the airport hopes to attract by extending the runway is not long enough. The “runway end safety area” should meet internationally recommended standards of 240m not the 90m that has been signed off by the Civil Aviation Authority as part of a historic dispensation, said the association’s technical director Captain Rob Torenvlied. “Building this runway extension without proper run-off areas is akin to building the Transmission Gully motorway with cardboard crash barriers because the proper ones are too expensive.

Swapping the classroom for kayaks You’re supposed to have wind to go sailing but no, we just had a slight breeze. We were going sailing and kayaking. We had been split up into two groups and each group was doing each of the activities. I’m going sailing first. We are shown were the rudder is, how to handle the ropes and where the skipper should sit. We have to put three to a boat. We’re all setting off and we manage to get moving. We are supposed to go to the buoy. We did it once, twice and then we got off track and just went in circles. Everyone dipped their hands into the water and every once in a while we got a big gust of wind and shot forwards. We bumped into one another a little but everyone was having so much fun we didn’t care. After a while we stopped bumping into each other but we had a few

close calls with other boats. We all took turns so each person could have a go with each job. We were told to come back to shore so we slowly glided along the water as we came back to shore. Once back we had a bite to eat and a drink and then we got back on the water.

The groups swapped over so I was in a kayak now. As this is a school event we can’t hurt ourselves in the water, so we are shown how to paddle properly and how to get back on a kayak once you have fallen off. Once that was done we all ran to a kayak and set off one at a time.

I was one of the last ones in the water but I didn’t mind. I asked Mrs Scott to hold my kayak and I jumped, SPLASH! I popped right back up because of the life jacket. I climbed back on and got paddling. Everything was muted and muffled because of the water in my ears.

Mrs Scott decided to make a raft so we all joined her. She picked me and Brooklyn to swap kayaks so we had to crawl along the ends of the kayaks to get to our new kayak. I fell off and again I popped right back up. I had to swim to the kayak and climb on. I ended up jumping off my kayak again and again and again. Everyone is slowly going back to shore so I follow them. I wish we could’ve done it a bit longer. The people who went sailing are already eating. I joined my friends for lunch. Everyone was talking, eating and laughing. After a few minutes everyone got up and put their lunch away. I walk around with the girls after lunch for a little bit but end up playing bullrush with the boys. I enjoyed aquatics day very much and hope we do more trips like it throughout the year. Building boats tests hard materials skills By students from Class 7/4 Hello, my name is Maddy. I am enjoying Ashburton Intermediate so far. My favourite subject at school is Hard Materials (woodwork). This term we have been making powered boats. We got the option to choose what type of boat we wanted. There were steam, paddle, swamp, jet and propeller. We started with three blocks of wood. We traced it, sanded it and glued it. Mr Butler is a very good teacher. He helps you lots and knows what he is talking about. On my boat I am up to putting the motor together. I really enjoy Hard Materials. It’s not just about learning. You also get to make cool things and learn how to operate different machines. I enjoy Hard Materials lots. Hello, my name is Victoria. This is my first year at Ashburton Intermediate. It is so fun especially when it comes to Hard Materials woodwork. In the Hard Materials room there’s an awesome teacher and his name is Mr Butler. This term

am loving it, especially Hard Materials. We are making boats. I have made my deck and my under deck. I’m now working on my battery pack. I am making a propeller boat. I love working with Mr Butler in Hard Materials. I am really enjoying it.

we are making electric boats that move through the water by themselves. Mr Butler lets us use different materials to make our boats. There are different kinds of boats you can make. There’s paddle, steam, fan and jet boat. I am doing a paddle boat. There are a lot of steps to finish your masterpiece. You have to carve, sand and drill. So if you have a trip to Ashburton Intermediate you could probably see our boats and other cool things. Hi, my name is Emma. It is almost the end of my first term at Ashburton Intermediate. I really like Hard Materials. I never

knew that constructing items could take so many steps. Mr Butler is our teacher. I value him as a teacher as he gave us a hard object to make so we get to use different tools, materials and textures. My favourite tool is the drill press as it is fun to use whenever you need to drill a hole through something. Anybody can use it. The tool I don’t like is the solder machine because it is hard to use and you can burn yourself easily. I have had fun designing my project and I can’t wait to test out my boat. My name is Hannah McC. I am 11 years old and go to Ashburton Intermediate. I

Hi, my name is Hannah K and this is my first year at Ashburton Intermediate. I really like it here especially when it comes to Hard Materials (woodwork). This term we have been making electronic toy boats. We started off with three little planks of wood. We shaped, designed, sanded and we drilled. We’ve all made our mini masterpiece! We had certain options of what kinds of boat we were going to make. There was the option of a jet, paddle, propeller, swamp and a steam boat. I’m doing a paddle boat because I think it will move through the water more swiftly than the others. All in all I really love Hard Materials and never knew I could make such technical stuff like that.

In brief

■ AMAZON ON THE RISE

eBay ‘on life support’ EBay’s once-loyal merchants are moving more of their business to Amazon.com, saying they get more for their money by selling merchandise via the Web retailer. Amazon’s pool of merchants doubled to about two million in 2014, while the number of sellers on eBay has remained flat at 25 million in the past two years. Businesses that at first set up online storefronts on eBay say they’re surprised how quickly sales surge on Amazon once products appear on both sites. The move to Amazon, which boasts a bigger user base and offers more ways to ship merchandise, poses a threat to eBay, which pioneered the idea of an Internet marketplace where merchants big and small could hawk wares. “We saw sales drop 10 per cent on eBay and gain 10 per cent on Amazon,” said Chance Knapp, chief executive officer of Vivo Technology, a laptop parts and accessories business, about a few product lines he moved last year. “It was like customers were actually shifting from eBay to Amazon.” EBay is already under pressure, chalking up lackluster holiday-quarter sales and suffering a marketplace traffic slowdown that CEO John Donahoe blamed on changes in the way Google handles shoppingsearch results. EBay is spinning off its PayPal division this year after pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn, who lamented sluggish gains in the online shopping division. Moving storefronts doesn’t come cheap. Amazon charges a premium for its logistics services, which include storage, packaging and ensuring products

Apple watch online When it comes to buying the Apple Watch, it’s time to think different. Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s sales chief, wants to scrap the company’s tradition of having customers wait in line, sometimes for days, to get their hands on the latest gadget. Apple has instructed its sales force to prod shoppers to the company’s website to purchase the new smartwatch. “The days of waiting in line and crossing fingers for a product are over for our customers,” according to a memo to Apple sales staff. “This is a significant change in mindset and we need your help to make it happen.” - NZME

Amazon’s pool of merchants doubled to about two million in 2014.

are shipped in a timely manner. Both companies have complex price formulas that vary by product category. While eBay typically charges about 10 per cent of each item’s final sale price, Amazon takes 15 per cent in most cases, with additional fees for optional storage and packaging. Many sellers say Amazon is worth the extra expense to achieve greater sales volumes and that it’s cheaper to let Amazon handle logistics than do it themselves. ChannelAdvisor, a Morrisville, North Carolina consulting company that helped 3000 merchants sell $6 billion in merchandise last year, saw the migration to Amazon from eBay begin last year. Slowing sales growth on eBay encouraged sellers to move inventory to Amazon, and the gap widened, according to Scot Wingo, ChannelAdvisor’s CEO. By the last three months of 2014 - critical for retailers because of holiday shopping ChannelAdvisor saw its clients’ Amazon sales rise 33 per cent

from a year earlier, compared with 5 per cent growth on eBay. “EBay remains a good part of the business, but it’s on life support and the growth is on Amazon,” Wingo said. Chris Matsakis, president of daily-deal site DealGenius.com in Chicago, said that as recently as 2013 sales on eBay exceeded those on Amazon’s marketplace. Last year, his revenue via Amazon grew fivefold, and are now four times greater than sales on eBay, he said. “We’re seeing significant growth on Amazon where eBay has sort of plateaued,” Matsakis said. Amazon - which also sells goods from its own inventory of products, not just from third-party retailers, such as eBay’s marketplace - attracted 174.9 million unique visitors in the US in February, 46 per cent more than eBay, according to ComScore. Ryan Moore, a spokesman for eBay, declined to comment on any sales shift, referring instead to Donahoe’s previous statements on revenue growth. Amazon, based in Seattle, had

more than two million merchants at the end of last year, up from more than one million at the end of 2013. Still, Amazon’s logistical support services and larger customer base make it attractive to sellers with high sales volumes of quick-moving inventory, while eBay remains more favorable to small sellers of collectibles and specialty items. Amazon, which has 270 million active buyers compared with eBay’s 155 million, has had a third-party marketplace since 2000 and started offering Fulfillment by Amazon in 2007. Some sellers have been wary of Amazon, since it can also be a retail competitor. The shift highlights the value of Amazon’s paid membership model and its investments in distribution. Amazon boasts tens of millions of customers who pay $99 a year for fast delivery, as well as offering online music and movies. Merchants are willing to pay Amazon more to access those shoppers and have Amazon handle and deliver their products. - Bloomberg

An Auckland accounting firm has hired a robot to allow staff to have a presence at conferences, meetings and training programmes without physically attending. Dubbed “George” the telepresence robot was created by American company Double Robotics and retails for around $3300. George is the first robot of its kind to be brought to New Zealand, and is controlled by a remote user who can appear on-screen, or use the robot as a platform to show others content during training, workshops and seminars. He was bought by Brad Golchin, founder and director of Auckland accounting firm Wise Advice. - NZME

Targeting kids online For decades, advertising to children on television has been held to tougher rules than commercials for adults. US federal regulators have long been concerned that kids are more vulnerable to marketing and have a tougher time distinguishing between an ad and a show. Now with new apps such as YouTube Kids, hosting videos aimed at children, the same rules aren’t being applied, opening up children to more advertising than ever, according to a coalition of children’s advocacy and public interest groups. In a complaint to be filed this week with the US Federal Trade Commission, the groups alleged that YouTube Kids, owned by Google, contains a host of videos created by McDonald’s, Fisher-Price, American Greetings and other companies to encourage children to buy their products. - NZME

Local riders tackle Tour De Lakes Sam Letham (right) sits at the front of the peloton during the fourth stage of the Tour De Lakes in Southland over Easter. The six stage ‘mini tour of Southland’ had four local riders journey to the deep south. Letham finished up 13th in the B grade general classification while Frances Smith was 10th in the women’s race. In C grade Paul Macfie was 15th and Dave Knight 17th. In A grade Southland’s Luke Macpherson went into the final day on Monday with a 2 minute 34 second lead and held on to take the crown by 1: 55. Carnage carves Hesson a target for rich IPL franchises up Tour field By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton’s Hayden Roulston has been able to avoid the drama on the road in Belgium this week. Fellow Kiwi and Trek Racing team-mate Jesse Sargent was knocked out of the rest of the season after being hit by a car on the Tour of Flanders and then Roulston avoided a major pile up on Thursday morning (NZT). The 103rd edition of the Scheldeprijs was the usual 200-kilometre that played out in a routine manner. Although the race is part of the Flanders Classics the absence of climbs and limited sectors of cobbles made it easily controlled for the fast men, providing a rare opportunity for the pure sprinters during the Belgian spring, and this year was no different. Alexander Kristoff (Katu-

sha) - fresh off his victory in the Tour of Flanders - was the first to jump and no-one could match the Norwegian’s power and speed. Trek’s Danny van Poppel had his wheel but faded in the final metres and settled for fifth with Roulston unscathed in 73rd 1.32 back from Kristoff. Many riders used Scheldeprijs as a tune-up for Monday’s Paris-Roubaix and thankfully Trek’s riders avoided the large pile-up in the final kilometre, a nasty fast-speed crash. Sargent wasn’t so fortunate earlier in the week. The Kiwi was hit by a neutral service vehicle while leading the Tour of Flanders in Belgium on Monday and has had to have surgery on a broken collarbone. Roulston finished 65th in Flanders and after avoiding the carnage in Scheldeprijs will likely contest the 257km ParisRoubaix.

New Zealand cricket may have a fight to keep coach Mike Hesson as Indian Premier League franchises have indicated some serious interest in the New Zealand coach. Eight Black Caps are in India for the T20 extravaganza, and three coaches, but it is those who are not there that will be concerning those who occupy New Zealand Cricket’s mahogany row. Overtures have been made to Hesson, after New Zealand’s rapid upturn in fortunes in the recent World Cup. Hesson’s ability to establish an attacking template that changed the way one-day cricket was viewed has dramatically increased the value of his stock. Hesson signed a contract extension with NZC midway through last year, but with salaries twice the size of that he could receive in New Zea-

land for about a quarter of the work, it would be difficult for the national body to stop him going if he wanted to. It is thought Hesson’s backof-house style would suit most of the franchises, whose flamboyant owners like either themselves or their marquee players to be front and centre. This scenario highlights the bind smaller nations find themselves in when trying to retain coaching talent. Meanwhile Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara has been named as the Leading Cricketer in the World in the 2015 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. Sangakkara joined India’s Virender Sehwag as the only two players to be named as Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World for a second occasion. Kiwi Jeetan Patel was also named by the Almanack as one of the year’s best. - NZME

Baker-Finch backs Day for green jacket By Ben everiLL Former British Open champion and now well-respected Masters commentator Ian Baker-Finch has plumped for countryman Jason Day to win Australia’s second green jacket. Baker-Finch has anointed Day his top pick to take out

the 79th Masters at Augusta National which got under way overnight. After playing the relaxed par-three competition on Masters eve with fellow major winner Nick Faldo and Australian John Senden, Baker-Finch extolled Day’s chances. “There is a certain level or style of player who get to a

point where they expect to win and I think Jason has got to that point now,” Baker-Finch said. “I think Jason is now at the point where he has done so well in majors before and he believes he can do it, he’s in good form and he’s fit.” The 1991 British Open champion bracketed world No.1 Rory

McIlroy, defending champion and world No.3 Bubba Watson, world No.2 Henrik Stenson and big-hitting Dustin Johnson (world No.7) as the main threats, but he also held special praise for 2013 champion Adam Scott. “I think Adam has the ability to do it again,” he said. - AAP

In brief Christie in Classic Jason Christie is set to start in the second round of the Calder Stewart Cycling Series - the Timaru Classic tomorrow. Christie (Avanti Team Racing) is one of four riders not required by their Australian Continental teams in this week’s Adelaide Tour, so are fronting up for domestic teams. Sam Horgan, Dan Barry, Keagan Girdlestone and Christie are all taking the start line, and all four have good recent form. Christie was third in the national road championships earlier this year but more recently took out the Grape Ride in Marlborough, finishing five seconds clear of Horgan. The elite men will tackle three laps of an undulating circuit around Pleasant Point, covering 148 kilometres while the masters and women will do two laps for a 109km race. The series will then swing across the Alps in May to Hokitika before the fourth round in Ashburton on August 15.

Mercedes’ wake-up call As the Formula One circuit heads to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, it’s no longer a safe bet that Mercedes will top the podium by the end of the weekend. After a jubilant Sebastian Vettel emerged as the surprise winner for Ferrari at the Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago, a season once expected to be dominated by the silver cars of Mercedes could be shaping up to be far more competitive. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said after the race it was the “wake-up call that we needed.” - AFP

Schu Junior on track Mick Schumacher, the teenage son of seven-time world champion Michael, has generated huge media interest as he began official testing before his Formula Four Junior Series debut. Cameras followed the shy 16-year-old wherever he went at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben yesterday, as he tested with Team Van Amersfoort. His father is still recovering from serious head injuries suffered in a skiing accident in 2013 and Oschersleben is the same track where Michael Schumacher drove his first official motorbike race in 2008. - AFP

Nicklaus nails an ace Jack Nicklaus, the 75-year-old US golf legend who has won a record 18 major titles, has shown he’s still got the skills to mix it with the modern champions by acing the fourth hole at the Masters Par-3 Contest. Nicklaus owns a record six Masters crowns. At the 130-yard fourth hole in the annual casual competition played on the eve of the Masters, Nicklaus fired his tee shot beyond the pin, watched it bounce twice and then spin backward and roll 20 feet into the cup. Nicklaus celebrated with his playing partners as the spectators roared. - AFP

Battered Blues remain in good spirits BY PATRICK MCKENDRY There’s nothing funny about losing seven matches in a row, but the Blues still have a sense of humour. Want proof ? After their latest close defeat - the 23-16 reverse against the Chiefs in Hamilton last weekend, a kid, thought to be 11 or 12, shouted a question to Blues halfback Jimmy Cowan as he made his way off the Waikato Stadium pitch.

“Hey, Jimmy!”, the boy shouted, “how’s Owen?” “Huh?” Cowan is said to have replied. The kid responded: “How’s 0 and 7?” Cowan duly passed the joke on to his team-mates, some of whom even managed wry smiles. On the eve of their match against the Brumbies at Eden Park, the first time they have played there this season, the Blues figure there’s no point in being down in the dumps about

their horror streak, and that makes sense. They have suffered some terrible luck to go along with their poor decision-making at crucial times, but they remain together and committed to the cause. They have to prepare for every match like it will be the one which will stop the rot. There are no factions within the squad, according to one player, who was pleasantly surprised at the culture within a franchise which last enjoyed

Napa has score to settle Brisbane had the chance to sign rising Sydney Roosters NRL player Dylan Napa when he was just 17. Tonight at Suncorp Stadium, there’s every chance they’ll wish they had. Napa, in line for a possible Queensland State of Origin call-up after a stunning start to the NRL season, is licking his lips at the prospect of taking on the team he supported as a youngster - the same team that showed no interest in his talents until the Roosters did. The Brisbane-born forward was playing junior football for the North Devils when he was snatched from under the noses of the Broncos by a visiting scout. - AAP

Fifita finding form A rejuvenated Andrew Fifita believes he’s getting close to the form that earned him selection for NSW and a Rugby League World Cup winners medal in 2013. Fifita endured a 12 months to forget last year with injury limiting him to just a dozen appearances, leading to him losing his spot in both the Test and NSW sides. But after recovering from surgery for a broken arm at the end of last year, the former Wests front-rower has started 2015 strongly. He’s averaging 149 metres a game - the sixth most in the NRL - behind Sharks team-mate Paul Gallen who tops the list with 202. - AAP

Slater ‘will be back’ Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy says it’s premature to call time on Billy Slater’s Test career following his latest shoulder injury. The 31-year-old Kangaroos custodian will be sidelined for a month after injuring his shoulder in Melbourne’s impressive NRL win over the Warriors and he will miss the May Test against New Zealand. With Greg Inglis a ready replacement in the Australian line-up, there’s a question mark over Slater’s representative future. But Bellamy said Slater had proven even in the twilight of his career that he was still worthy of a Test jersey. “From what we’ve seen this year I think Billy Slater’s still capable of playing for Australia again, without a doubt.” - AAP

Warning from Sanzar The approach by Waratahs coach Michael Cheika to referee Jaco Peyper during halftime of the match against the Blues in Sydney a fortnight ago has been confirmed by governing body Sanzar. Sanzar yesterday issued a statement that Cheika, who was on a final warning due to previous misconduct charges, and Peyper, had received formal warnings. “After undertaking a thorough investigation, including receiving statements from all parties involved, it was determined that Mr Cheika had approached the match referee, Jaco Peyper, in front of the other match officials to seek clarification on a scrum interpretation during the half time break of the Waratahs v Blues match,” the statement said. “Both Mr Cheika and Mr Peyper have subsequently acknowledged this exchange should not have taken place and apologised. Sanzar has issued formal warnings to both Mr Cheika and Mr Peyper” - NZME

Rakaia struggle to field fit 15 By Jonathan Leask

Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Rakaia have unfinished business with Lincoln in the Combined Country Cup rugby competition. They also have a shrinking list of fit and available players. The last two times Lincoln have made the trip to Rakaia, they have claimed the win to advance to the competition final a week later. Tomorrow’s match may not be as high stakes as a semi-final, but both sides have tasted defeat in the opening rounds. The defending champions went down to Glenmark last Thursday while Rakaia bounced back from a loss to Southbridge to beat Prebbleton. more to injury filling in for the Senior Bs and we have three away this weekend,” Foxcroft said. “We are disappointed to lose any game but the reality is starting to set in that if you don’t have the players for a team you’ll run out of luck sooner or later. “You can’t afford to lose too many games if you want to make the top four but if teams keep tipping each other up it could go in our favour at the back end. “We just have to hang in this month.” With several players due

back within the next few weeks, the stocks will be restored in time for the second half of the round. However, converted centre Seta Koroitamana, who has been in sparkling form, could be lost for the middle part of the season for Fiji Under 20 duties at the Junior World Trophy in Portugal. Koroitamana has had a stroll on the wing for the Crusader Knights development team recently, and has already made an impact this season switching to the midfield, scoring a hattrick of tries in the opening game of the season and even

doing a spot of goal kicking. With a depleted line-up Rakaia will be leaning on their game-breaking midfield of Koroitamana and Nete Caucau. Celtic are at home again to West Melton coming off their superb win over Southbridge, while elsewhere in section one the two unbeaten teams go head-to-head when Oxford host Glenmark, while Southbridge host Hornby and Prebbleton play Kaiapoi. Over in section two Methven and Southern are unbeaten after two rounds. Southern are the only Mid Canterbury team heading north with an away trip to Darfield, while Methven have their first home game against the winless Ohoka. Hampstead are back at home to face an unbeaten BurnhamDunsandel. Waihora are at home to Saracens and Ashley are up against Rolleston.

Ellis eyeing black jersey BY KRIS SHANNON New Zealand derbies are a highlight on any player’s calendar but Andy Ellis has particular reason to relish the next few weeks. Beginning with the Highlanders tomorrow night, the Crusaders face Kiwi opposition for four games in a row, an important period for the veteran halfback. Ellis makes no secret of his desire to once again pull on the black jersey and, throughout the rest of the month, he will have the chance to test himself against those currently in the All Blacks frame. First, it’s incumbent Aaron Smith at AMI Stadium before the Chiefs and two-test halfback Augustine Pulu come to town, followed by a visit to TJ Perenara and the Hurricanes. The encounters will be crucial on a team level, considering the congested nature of the New Zealand conference, and the individual battles may be equally pivotal. “I love playing all the New Zealand teams,” Ellis said. “There’s always a real edge in it - a lot

of the guys know each other and there’s just a really good rivalry that’s built up over the years. They’re probably the ones that hurt the most when you don’t put in a good performance.” A

Andy Ellis

good performance will be imperative for both personal pride and higher aspirations. It’s still early in the season but Ellis is seen as a strong chance to secure one of three halfback spots in the All Blacks’ World Cup squad, with experience and a cool head working in the 31-year-old’s favour. After all, Ellis is the only player in the picture with prior knowledge of the World Cup pressure cauldron, part of both the 2007 and 2011 teams. And just like in the triumphant final four years ago, when he was the last man with the ball in his hands, Ellis again appeals as a safe option off the bench late in games. “There’s no doubt about it, I’d love to be in the black jersey again,” he said. “But it’s been a few years since I had it, so I’ve just learned to really enjoy what I do with the Crusaders and with Canterbury and the wee stint I had in Japan. “I’ve kind of just relaxed - I enjoy going to work and working on my game and doing all those little things. “I would love to play

for the All Blacks again but I’ll just let that take care of itself.” Meanwhile, the Crusaders could find no room for Richie McCaw or Dan Carter in their starting XV for the crunch clash against the Highlanders. The southern sides are separated by only a point in the Super Rugby standings, leaving the encounter at AMI Stadium pivotal in the playoff picture, but coach Todd Blackadder has declined the opportunity to inject the experienced duo. Colin Slade will again start at first five-eighth, having taken the No10 jersey for last weekend’s thumping of the Sharks. Carter was a late withdrawal after returning to New Zealand for the birth of his second son, with the All Black back on the Crusaders’ bench for Saturday night. Carter will be joined in the reserves by McCaw, set to make his second straight substitute appearance after being introduced in the 51st minute during last week’s win in Durban. Crusaders: Israel Dagg, David Havili, Kieron Fonotia, Ryan Crotty, Nemani Nadolo, Colin Slade, Andy Ellis, Kieran Read (c), Matt Todd, Jordan Taufua, Sam Whitelock, Jimmy Tupou, Owen Franks, Ben Funnell, Joe Moody. Reserves: Codie Taylor, Alex Hodgman, Nepo Laulala, Scott Barrett, Richie McCaw, Mitchell Drummond, Dan Carter, Nafi Tuitavake. - NZME

World Cup win was ‘duty to my country’ BY PATRICK MCKENDRY At the age of 40, Brad Thorn has conceded defeat probably for the first time in his life. As he said in a series of interviews over the past few days as he faces up to retirement this season, no one can beat Old Father Time. Thorn, for-

merly of the All Blacks, Highlanders, Crusaders, Kangaroos league and Queensland State of Origin and Brisbane Broncos teams, not to mention latterly of Leinster and Leicester, is finally calling it quits. Thorn said his career highlights were his Grand Final wins with the Broncos and Su-

per Rugby titles with the Crusaders, plus a Heineken Cup win with Leinster. The World Cup victory in 2011, however, he puts on another level. “The World Cup wasn’t really like that for me, it was a duty to my country,” he said. “There was too much on the line. There’s too much at stake.

“I was a senior member of that team and it was a job I just had to get done and then move on with my life. I was in tears after the whistle in the final and that was because I had put so much pressure on myself.” Thorn, who will settle with his wife and four children in Brisbane. - NZME

Cavs shoot down Bucks Superstar LeBron James drained a three-pointer with 14.9 seconds left to help the Cavaliers beat Milwaukee 104-99 yesterday and clinch the NBA Central Division title. Even before completing their fourth straight victory, the Cavaliers were assured of the division title thanks to Chicago’s 105-103 loss to Orlando. They also secured the second seed behind Atlanta in the Eastern Conference playoffs. James finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. The Celtics inched closer to a playoff berth with a 113-103 victory over Detroit, but Miami and Indiana are just one game back in the race for the final post-season spot. In the Western Conference, reigning NBA champions San Antonio continued their bid to grab the Southwest Division with a 110-98 victory over division leaders Houston. - AFP

Celtic closes in on title Celtic maintained their seven point advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they ground out a 2-0 victory over 10-man Partick Thistle at Parkhead yesterday. The Hoops struggled to break down a wellorganised Thistle side but made the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime when Kris Commons scored from the penalty spot after James Craigen saw red for a tackle from behind on Stuart Armstrong. The Scottish champions then spurned a number of opportunities before stand-in skipper Stefan Johansen finished off a fine move in the 63rd minute. - AFP

Liverpool into semis Philippe Coutinho produced a moment of magic to earn Liverpool a much-needed 1-0 victory at secondtier Blackburn Rovers in their FA Cup quarter-final replay. The Brazilian fired in an accurate low drive in the 70th minute at Ewood Park to earn Brendan Rodgers’s side an FA Cup semi-final date with Aston Villa at Wembley on April 19. “Over the two games it was a difficult tie,” said Rodgers yesterday. “They are strong and well organised. We knew it would be difficult. But my players were brilliant.” Since Blackburn held out for a goalless draw at Anfield in their first encounter a month ago, Liverpool have seen their hopes of a place in the Premier League’s top four fade, with two defeats in three matches.- AFP

Caitlin on ‘huge learning curve’ BY JONATHAN LEASK

JONATHAN.L@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Caitlin Johnstone is set for a second crack at the New Zealand Open Championships in Auckland next week. Enjoying a strong season in the pool the 17-year-old Johnstone decided to give the pre-

mier swim meet a second crack and knows what she wants to achieve. “I’ve recorded some personal bests but I’m hoping to improve my breaststroke. “I would really like to PB in all my events. “Placing wise I’m aiming at

the A final, so the top eight, in the 50m breaststroke and the B final, top 15, in the other two.” Johnstone went to the open championships back in 2013, recording three top 20 placings. “With age and more experience everything’s not as scary as it was that first time.

“I’ll know to warm up better and things like that, but it’s still a big learning curve.” It is a big learning curve, and rubbing shoulders with the likes of New Zealand representatives Lauren Boyle and Glen Snyders only adds to that. “Even just watching them and

how they carry themselves you learn heaps.” Johnstone is the lone representative of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team, but she will be linking up with other Canterbury swimmers and coaches to keep her company at the championships.

Scott ready to follow in champion foosteps at Augusta BY BEN EVERILL Adam Scott thinks he can “do a Bubba” at the Masters this week. Only Jack Nicklaus (1965-66), Nick Faldo (1989-90) and Tiger Woods (2001-02) have success-

fully defended the Masters title. But 17 players have won more than one green jacket. Scott’s breakthrough victory in 2013 has been sandwiched by Bubba Watson’s two wins and now, with the pressures of be-

IPL franchises eye up Hesson P19

ing defending champion off his back, the Australian feels ready to become the 18th multiple champion. “It is tough to defend any title but especially around here when the best players all come togeth-

er and they are trying to peak for this event,” Scott explained. “So to defend is an incredible achievement. But I’m thinking I can do a Bubba this week.” The 79th Masters is shaping to be a great one with numerous

big name players in form. World No.1 Rory McIlroy is going for a career grand slam and human headline Tiger Woods returning from his selfimposed tour exile to sharpen his game. - AAP
