‘White women should stick to techno’ Marlan Wayans says white women should stick to dancing to techno music. Wayans copped widespread heat earlier this week for calling Delta Goodrem an “unrhythmic white woman” in an Instagram selfie he took while apparently trying to enjoy a Beyonce and Jay Z concert during their The Run tour in Los Angeles. The snap showed Wayans with his eyes awkwardly raised as he watches a seemingly oblivious Goodrem groove along to the music. After the image went viral and Australians flew into a rage defending Goodrem, the singer responded in the best way possible. The 29-year-old posted a video of Seinfeld character Elaine in her infamously bad dancing scene from the hit US TV show. “Had a blast last night,” Goodrem wrote alongside the video of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character busting some hilariously hideous moves.

Back in time It seems, looking at the Guardian of November 12, 1918, that the role of the “o ce boy” was dying out even then: “Yes, dying, if not dead – that of the “office” boy. The telephone, the runabout car, and cycle, with other rapid means of communication and modern business convenience, has killed out the “office” boy of the past.

Super-duper moon A “super-duper” full moon that is bigger and brighter than any other moon this year will appear in the sky on Monday morning. The full moon will occur at 6.10am but will reach perigee, the closest point to Earth, at 5.44am. It would be another 20 years before a moon was as close to the earth, according to University of Canterbury astronomer Associate Professor Karen Pollard. At its closest, the moon will be 356,896km away from Earth. When seen on the horizon, it would seem much larger than when seen high in the sky because of an interesting optical illusion, Professor Pollard said. “We saw a supermoon a month ago on July 12 and will see another one next month on September 9. However, the supermoon this month is the closest and largest one for 2014,” she said. “After September, the cycles of full moons and perigees get out of sync and it won’t be for another year and 48 days that they align again.”

Have ‘mower’, will travel Two Northland women are stepping outside their comfort zones to test themselves in India. Houhora policewoman Tracee Knowler and reporter Kristin Edge have joined forces for a 3500km race across India in a 5kW glorified lawnmower, aka a motorised rickshaw. The event involves about 60 teams from around the world. Teams are given a start and a finish point and it is up to them to make their way between the two points as fast as possible. “There is no set route, no back-up, no way of knowing if you’re going to make it,” writes Edge. “The only certainty is that you will get lost, you will get stuck and you will break down.” The money the team raises will go to the Miriam Centre, a place of healing where people who have su ered harm can receive expert support, therapy and advice. I ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL

Council predicts gym profit By Sue NewmaN Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

By running a gym in the EA Networks Centre, the Ashburton District Council anticipates it will earn itself a $239,000 profit in the first year of business. But some Ashburton gym owners are angry that this profit will be going into ratepayers’ pockets rather than their own. By running in direct competition with the town’s privately owned gyms, the council will effectively force some of them out of business, they say. Two years ago the council debated letting local gym owners tender to run the gym in

the new stadium but now it has changed its mind, believing the business should be managed and operated as part of the stadium complex. John Moore owns or part owns two gyms and said he’s ‘gutted’ the council has decided to run the gym itself. This puts all private gym owners at a disadvantage because the council gym will share administration costs with other facilities in the new centre, Mr Moore said. “I’m pretty disappointed. There’s no room for another gym and I’ve said that to a couple of councillors. The commonsense thing is they should have leased it to the Gym Com-

pany, they’re the big mixed gym in town.” When the stadium was discussed 12 years ago, Mr Moore said gym operators shared ideas with the council and the council was now using that ‘intellectual property’, he said. “It’s a kick in the pants all round when they say they’re going to do something and then they go out and do something that’s completely different.” He believes the council’s budgets are flawed and said that from start-up to making a profit would take three years. “I believe a council should stick to its knitting, to improving the infrastructure of the

town and keeping the streets clean.” At yesterday’s council meeting councillors revoked an earlier decision to give local gym owners the first opportunity to lease the gym and fitness centre, but not all councillors were happy. “I’ve talked to a few gym owners who thought they’d get a look at leasing this facility; they feel the market is at saturation point now in terms of the number of people using gyms in Ashburton,” Ken Cutforth said. “They say this competition will take some of their business and whether this gym is leased or run by the council, someone

will have to lose their business.” Council had to look at the big picture when it decided how to run the stadium gym, Don McLeod said. “On one hand we’re looking at the effect on local businesses but on the other, we’re charged with looking at what’s best for the district. In this case there is a tension between the two,” he said. Councillors voted to revoke their earlier decision to offer local owners the opportunity to lease the gym, instead the gym will be managed and operated as part of the overall sports complex, with the management system reviewed after three years.

$6000 technology windfall for Chertsey School By ToNi williamS toni.w@theguardian.co.nz

Senior pupils at Chertsey School will benefit from a $6000 technology windfall after their school principal responded to an online survey. Principal Kerrin Lester answered an online survey for the 2020 Communication Trust to find out about digital education in schools. The survey included gathering information on how schools used their technology and what devices they used. An incentive to get people to reply was the chance to win 10 Hewlett Packard Chromebooks. Miss Lester won from 729 entries nationwide. She did not expect to win the digital equipment, and was over the moon they had. “It’s a fantastic surprise. “You fill surveys in to help with information gathering not expecting to win the incentive prize,” she said.

The Chromebooks were delivered this week by Laurence Zwimpfer, on behalf of the 2020 Community Trust. The Trust also run the Computers in Homes programme to get a computer into every New Zealand home, teach parents basic computing skills and offer refresher tutorials. It was launched this year by Ashburton Intermediate, Netherby and Hampstead schools. Mr Zwimpfer said a survey was taken every few years of where technology was in schools. It had been done since the 1990s. “We look at what technology schools have got and how they are using it,” he said. The information was expected to be collated and released in early September. It was expected the 13 children in Chertsey’s senior class, with teacher Sarah Gaskin, would get the Chrome Books.

I HOMELESS IN ASHBURTON

Lack of accommodation irks By Toni Williams Toni.w@Theguardian.co.nz

An Ashburton man now homeless is frustrated at the lack of accommodation available in town for people in his situation. Russell John Tully, known as John, has no accommodation, and with no visible solution resorted to pitch a tent in the domain this week as a cry for help. However he was moved on by police following calls made by concerned members of the public. Mr Tully was sleeping in his car but had just sold it to get some money. It was a frustrating situation for Mr Tully who moved back to Ashburton following a career in the Australian mines. He featured in the Guardian in 2011. The 48-year-old had “come home to die” from an unidentified skin disease which caused boil-type lumps if left untreated and tightened the joints causing limited movement. It had seen him placed him on a disability benefit and was likely to worsen. His doctor said he should have a mobility scooter. After falling out with his flatmate last week, Mr Tully was living rough while on the waiting list for a Housing New Zealand property. However he did not anticipate anything soon and had turned to social agencies for support.

John Tully was homeless and living in his car earlier this week.

Presbyterian Support, through the emergency housing fund, had helped. But after four nights he could no longer turn to them. He had also kept in touch with HNZ, contacted Winz, mayor Angus McKay and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew’s office for assistance.

As a cry for help he had pitched his tent openly at the Ashburton Domain. But after visits from security patrols and 27 telephone calls to the Police from concerned members of the public, he was moved on. Mr Tully said people kept telling him to move to the city –

either Timaru or Christchurch where accommodation might be easier to find, but he wanted to be in Ashburton. He was born and raised here and had come home to die, he said. Ideally he wanted a one bedroom property that he could afford on his disability benefit.

However most properties in town were more than $300 a week and outside his reach. He had looked online, on supermarket notice boards and in the newspaper and would continue until something came up. In the meantime his household items were in storage until a solution could be found.

‘There is no quick fix solution’ By Toni Williams Toni.w@Theguardian.co.nz

HOUSING NEW ZEALAND - THE FACTS HNZ area manager Kate Milton said they managed 186 properties in Mid Canterbury. They included 85 two-bedroom homes, 84 three-bedroom properties and 17 four-bedroom houses. Ms Milton said three of those properties (two three-bedroom houses and a two-bedroom house) would soon be vacated, but all three had been o ered to new tenants. There was currently a waiting list of 23 people that wanted accommodation – 11 people were assessed priority A and 12 people priority B. The priority A clients were people considered at risk with a severe and persistent housing need to be addressed immediately. They were unable to access and/or sustain suitable, adequate and a ordable alternative housing. Priority B clients had serious need but were also unable to access appropriate accommodation. The housing waiting list and application process was managed by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), which was more commonly known as Winz. A MSD spokesperson said there was no “queue” for social housing as the waiting list often moved with people “coming on and o the waiting list”. “As the waiting list is constantly changing, a priority rating does not give someone a priority ‘place’ on the waiting list. “Another person with a higher priority may come in at any time,” they said. The length of time someone waits for a house depended on how quickly a suitable house became available and the number of people waiting with similar or more urgent needs. “When a suitable house becomes available a housing provider (HNZ or a community housing provider) will make contact with the applicant directly.”

A Mid Canterbury social service agency dealing with people unable to find suitable housing, says there is pressure on all accommodation in the district and no quick fix solution. Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan said the agency dealt with individuals, couples and families with children trying to find accommodation. “It is very hard to find rental accommodation in Ashburton, especially if you are on a limited income. Bonds and rent in advance also compound the problem,” she said. Mrs Girvan said housing issues were only worsened by the earthquakes and the growth of the population. “Staff here have worked with transients (usually single men) passing through, individuals, families with young children and couples living in tents, garages and dilapidated caravans parked up on other people’s properties,” she said.

“We have also worked with individuals sleeping rough.” There were a wide range of reasons why people end up in these situations and many did not have support or family to call on. Mrs Girvan said the Salvation Army and Presbyterian Support managed the Emergency Housing Fund granted by the Ashburton District Council but it was just a “stop-gap measure only” while a permanent solution was looked into. “Sometimes there is no solution and these are our most vulnerable people. Adequate shelter is a basic human right.” However, Mrs Girvan did not think an ‘emergency house’ in Ashburton was sustainable. “These are notoriously hard to manage and once a person is in the house it can be extremely difficult to move them on. We would also need to employ people to manage such a house 24/7,” she said. She said the demand for social housing was looked at time and

time again but “did not fit the supply and demand commercial model”. “We know there are people who would fit Housing New Zealand criteria, we also know that there is a waiting list for those and older person housing units. One group we find hard to place are older people who have too much money to be eligible for an older person’s unit from the council but not enough money to purchase their own unit, so they are then having to pay market rents,” she said. The Ashburton District Social Well Being Strategy 20092014 was under review. The district’s lack of housing was one of six areas to be actioned. Mrs Girvan said this would be picked up again within the next three months for a closer look at what could be done “but there is no quick fix solution to the housing issue and we do feel for those who do not have suitable, or indeed any place, to call home.”

When it reopens for business at 5am on Thursday, it will resemble stores in Timaru or Rolleston with storefront parking and with co ee and a wider selection of food. While the service station is closed the old shop will be demolished, clearing the way for store-front parking.

I ASHBURTON ATTEMPTED ABDUCTION

Police urge kids to stay safe BY ERIN TASKER ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

More charges laid Police have laid further charges against a 17-year-old arrested earlier this week over a weekend crime spree. The teenager was arrested after fleeing to an outdoor sports shop in East Street following five alleged thefts from cars, setting a car alight and breaking a window at a church. He and a co-o ender were disturbed at the shop and ran, but the 17-year-old was then found with hunting knives and air pistols from the shop. He was remanded on bail from the Ashburton District Court when he appeared on burglary charges and unrelated drugs charges on Monday, and police said yesterday they had since charged him with a further five charges of thefts from motor vehicles.

Police have released new information into an alleged abduction attempt in Ashburton as they urge children to keep themselves safe. Police are still seeking witnesses to the alleged incident which took place on Saunders Road, near Russell Avenue, between 10.45am and 11am last Sunday, involving a nine-yearold boy who was approached by a man in a green car. It was raining and the boy was on the corner of Saunders Road and State Highway One with his scooter waiting to be

picked up, when the green car came around the corner from the highway. The man got out of his vehicle and asked if the boy wanted lollies. The boy declined and the man went back to his car, but he then got back out of his car and ran after the boy and tried to grab him. The boy managed to run off and “scootered” to a safe address, while the man “zoomed off ” down Russell Avenue, Ashburton Police detective sergeant Jennifer Hooke said. She said people had contacted police with information but the male and the vehicle were yet to be identified.

The man has been described as being dark skinned, of age unknown, skinny build, wearing a black hoodie and jersey, black fleece track pants with black Velcro shoes. The car was described by the boy as a green two-door coupe with dark tinted windows, similar to a Honda Civic. Ms Hooke said police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area between 10.45am and 11am on Sunday, August 3, who may have seen the incident or the vehicle. She encouraged residents to be aware of people acting suspiciously in the area and said if

a suspicious vehicle was seen, people should take the registration number and pass it on to police. “It is also timely to remind the community to be aware of children keeping themselves safe when out on their own, encouraging them to say ‘no’ and to stay away from strange vehicles,” Ms Hooke said. The police investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Ashburton Police on (03) 307 8400. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Lake developers will have to pay for water BY SUE NEWMAN SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Toddler recovering A 3-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a vehicle in Lower Hutt on Thursday, police say. The boy was hit outside the Hutt City Kindergarten Association on Naenae Road about 3pm. He was transferred from Hutt Valley Hospital to Wellington Hospital’s intensive care unit on Thursday night, police spokesman Nick Bohm said. “He is making a good recovery.” The boy was unrestrained and unsupervised in a vehicle parked on the side of the road, while his 19-year-old brother was at a nearby address, he said. “The child has made their way out of the car and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. “The driver of the vehicle is distressed by what has happened and we are continuing to support them.” - APNZ

If developers of the Lake Hood extension project want to hook in to the Ashburton town water supply, then they’ll be footing the bill for the work, Ashburton District councillors have decided. At this week’s council meeting they turned down a request from the project’s developers for a $190,000 contribution from the council for the new water supply. While he had no issue with supplying houses at the lake with a reliable potable water supply councillor Stuart Wilson said he had a problem with council carrying some of the costs. “They’ve asked for a $190,000 subsidy. It’s a great idea but if the developer wants to develop these 350 lots then he can fund it. “I don’t want ratepayers funding it,” he said. Houses in the original Lake Hood settlement are supplied

with water from a bore and water treatment facility. This was designed for 150 properties. The extension project will eventually add another 350 lots to this and the existing supply cannot meet the extra demand. A new bore to supply the extra sections has been developed, but water quality is low. Treatment would be an

expensive option and this prompted a request to hook into the town supply. If the connection goes ahead, the original Lake Hood supply would be decommissioned and with time up to 500 new connections would be made to the Ashburton supply. Its water assets would transfer to the council.

Asset manager Andrew Guthrie said the town supply had plenty of capacity as it had been built for the future and the extra connections would not pose any immediate problems. Councillors opted to approve the connection to the town supply but refused the request for a $190,000 subsidy.

I ASHBURTON MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In brief Man shot Two people have been arrested after a 20-year-old man was shot in Lower Hutt early yesterday. The man arrived at Hutt Hospital’s emergency department with gunshot wounds to his hands and head cuts about 1.30am, police spokesman Nick Bohm said. Police later arrested a 34-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man outside a property in Lower Hutt. They were to be charged yesterday over the incident. Police still wanted to speak with another person who was at the property, Mr Bohm said. - APNZ

Council controls books By Sue NewmaN Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton Museum and Historical Society is about to off-load its paper work, freeing staff to focus their energies on running the district’s new museum. The society asked the Ashburton District Council to take over running the administration side of its business, and at Thursday’s council meeting the deal was signed off. In December the council decided it wanted to bring the administration of both the museum and the art gallery back under its control; the museum’s management said yes, but

the art gallery committee was less enthusiastic. It told the council it wanted to relocate to the new West Street gallery before considering any change. Reaching this point was the end of a long process, councillor Don McLeod said. “It is clear the people running the museum do not want to continue doing this on their own,” Mr McLeod said. “Whether you like it or not, the building over the road has to be operated as best we can, and making it part of the council operation will give it the best opportunity to optimise what this building can do for this community.”

If the museum was coming under the council’s wing, then it made sense for the art gallery to do the same thing at the same time, said councillor Rod Beavan. “We have two tenants in that building and this should be done in conjunction with the two of them. No one has said anything about the art gallery, where are they with this. I think we should stay where we are, get the art gallery around the table and have a discussion before Christmas.” Council could not assume the two organisations were the same, councillor Don McLeod said.

“They have different people involved and different communities of interest. It is wrong to say we will only do this if, and when, both parties are prepared to do it at the same time,” he said. The art gallery had shown no inclination to be involved with the council but the museum people had asked to be part of council. They feel they can offer better service to the people of Ashburton by doing this, mayor Angus McKay said. The change will be immediate and council business support group manager Paul Brake said would be achieved without extra costs for the council.

If you need an operation you don’t get the new fella, you get the guy that’s done heaps. Listen for my open homes on Friday mornings with Hoops. Conservatives leader Colin Craig has won an eleventh-hour High Court scrap over his exclusion from a televised political debate. TV3’s political show The Nation did not invite Mr Craig to a minor parties debate this morning, which included the Green Party, New Zealand First, the Maori Party, Act, Mana and United Future. Mr Craig filed urgent legal proceedings with the High Court at Auckland yesterday and his application for an interim injunction to restrict the screening of the debate without him was heard yesterday. Justice Murray Gilbert sided with the Conservative Party leader saying any inconvenience to MediaWorks was outweighed by the public interest in having Mr Craig at the debate. The debate cannot legally go ahead without his inclusion. Earlier TV3 said Mr Craig’s party did not meet the criteria to take part in the debate. A spokeswoman said today’s leaders debate focused on parties which had been represented in Parliament in the last three years. Mr Craig’s lawyer John McKay called that “a cop out” and in an affidavit Mr Craig described the decision as “arbitrary and unreasonable”. Conservatives won 2.6 per cent of the party vote in the 2011 general election more than Maori, Mana, United Future or Act - but did not gain a seat. - APNZ

■ TIMARU HIGH COURT

Jail for demanding with menaces A pair of Mid Canterbury farm workers used their association with a gang to frighten a man into paying them $1000, the High Court in Timaru has heard. Gordon Green and Regan Rogers are in jail for offending that traded on their association with the Mongrel Mob. In separate appearances yesterday, they were sentenced to 18 months in prison having earlier pleaded guilty to demanding with menaces. At each appearance, the court heard how on September 10 last year, the men visited the victim’s home to demand a payment of $1000. They made clear their association with the Mongrel Mob and they threatened harm if the victim went to the police. About a month later, Rogers went back to the property and the victim went to the police. Police later found Rogers in possession of a sawn-off shotgun. It was in pieces, was not loaded and was not used in the offending. Green, meanwhile, found himself charged six times for receiving stolen goods when police linked him to a cache of stolen property. Defence lawyer Douglas Brown said Green was responsible for the property insofar as he let an associate use a sleep- out at his partner’s house. He and his partner took some of the property to a second hand dealer. When he learned a game console was stolen, he replaced it with his own and left an apology note. Mr Brown said his client had spent much of his life in prison and was disappointed he had let so many people down by reoffending. He struggled with anxiety and had been “self-medicating” with the methamphetamine when he was caught with in November last year. Judge Joanna Maze noted Green had sought help but said there remained an obvious tension between his old life and the new one he hoped to make with his partner. She also noted his 140 convictions, which included 96 dishonesty offences. Judge Maze said assault was included in Rogers’ previous convictions. Rogers remained a patched member of the Mongrel Mob and his risk of reoffending was high. Rogers was sentenced to an additional three months in prison on the firearms charge and ordered to pay $500 reparations. Green was also ordered to pay $500 reparations, having already offered to do so, and was sentenced to six months in prison for five of the six receiving charges. These will be served concurrently, with another six months on the last receiving charge. Green was also disqualified for driving for six months having pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified. He was convicted and discharged for possession of methamphetamine.

■ PAPATOETOE MURDER

Victim’s belonging found A personal item belonging to a man stabbed to death in Papatoetoe on Thursday night has been found nearby. Davender Singh, 35, of Papatoetoe, was found in a vehicle on Norman Spencer Drive just before 8pm on Thursday. At a press conference yesterday afternoon Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said Mr Singh and his partner had stopped on Norman Spencer Drive to eat takeaways on their way home from work. They did not live far from the area where the incident happened. Mr Singh was extensively and fatally wounded. “Mr Singh has got a number of wounds so there’s definitely an indication of a violent struggle in or around the vehicle,” Mr Lynch said. Police were unable to interview his 31-year-old partner because she was in such a “distressed state”. They did manage to get some details from her on Thursday night but she could tell them only that the killer was a man. Up to 20 detectives were working on the scene yesterday, combing the area for evidence. The scene examination included the area around Norman Spencer Drive and the couple’s car. An item of interest, a personal belonging of Mr Singh’s was located in nearby Kenderdine Road. Police were still searching for a sharp object believed to have been used in Mr Singh’s murder. Mr Lynch said police had retrieved CCTV footage from a nearby business which had enabled the investigation team to narrow down timeframes. “Police can confirm that Mr Singh and his partner stopped outside the Manukau Events Centre in their vehicle at approximately 7.20pm on Thursday evening. It is evident that at the time Mr Singh was murdered, a large number of vehicles including a number of buses passed the vehicle. “Motorists passing by may recall seeing Mr Singh’s silver Honda motor vehicle that can be seen with its indicator flashing. Police are particularly interested in further information on another vehicle that was parked behind Mr Singh’s which left the scene prior to police arrival,” Mr Lynch said. “We ask that anyone who drove down Norman Spencer Drive between 7.20pm and 7.45pm on Thursday night and might have seen Mr Singh’s car parked outside the Manukau Events Centre please come forward to Police,” he said. “Additionally we would like to know more about the car that is seen parked behind Mr Singh’s vehicle.” Counties Manukau Police could be contacted on 09 261 1300 or information could be given anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. - APNZ

Police make progress in man’s death Police investigating the death of Auckland man Connor Morris have located a number of items of interest but say it is too soon to say if the weapon that killed him is among them. Mr Morris, 26, the partner of Millie Elder-Holmes, died after a brawl in Don Buck Rd, Massey last weekend. Mr Morris, the son of a prominent Head Hunters member, was farewelled on Thursdaday at a funeral attended by Ms Elder-Holmes, the daughter of the late Sir Paul Holmes Police said would be several days before police were able to confirm whether the weapon was among the items of interest recovered during scene examinations at locations on Don Buck Road. Detectives were still speaking to a large number of people and Detective Inspector Greg Cramer said he was satisfied with progress. “The team are working hard, they’ll be working through the weekend and everyone involved is putting in long hours. People continued to visit the scene yesterday to bring flowers and pay their respects. In an emotional message posted on Facebook, Ms ElderHolmes described how Mr Morris, the man with “beautiful baby blues”, took her heart. “He came into my life at a time when no one mattered to me, not even myself, and changed everything,” the 26-year-old wrote. “When you meet that person you’re meant to be with for the rest of your life you just know; you get drawn towards someone so hard it’s hard not to notice. I felt this happen when I first met Connor.” The tribute was posted hours after Mr Morris’ funeral, held at the Head Hunters East Chapter’s gym in Ellerslie. - APNZ

■ STATE HIGHWAY 77 DETOUR

Expect delays between Methven and Ashburton If you’re travelling between Ashburton and Methven next week, add an extra 10 minutes onto your trip time. State Highway 77 just south of the Reynolds and Pole Road intersection, will be closed from Monday for at least four days. This is to enable two large irrigation pipes, part of the Ashburton-Lyndhurst irrigation scheme, to be placed under the highway. While work is under way, that section of the highway will be closed, with traffic diverted along Pole Road and Springfield Road East. The New Zealand Transport Agency is warning motorists to take extra care when using the diversion that will involve local roads.

Don’t shut the blinds on family violence It’s Saturday night and you hear screaming coming from the house next door. It’s the third J time you’ve heard it this week. So what should you do? Erin Tasker finds out. im Sole knows family violence. As part of the Canterbury police family violence team he’s dealt with the victims, the perpetrators and the many children whose lives will never be the same because of it. But one of the most tragic family violence stories he tells, is from the perspective of a neighbour. “They interviewed one of the neighbours and he said he had stopped ringing the police. When he found out how the woman had died he realised he’d actually heard that occur; he realised then that the sound he was hearing was her head being bashed. “That struck a chord with me and the message for us as a community is that it’s a problem that we all own. We have a responsibility to address it collectively and if we start pulling our shutters down we are doing the community a disservice.” Neighbours are often the first to suspect something’s going on. Families aren’t always around, but neighbours are the ones who hear the yelling, the crying or the banging. They’re the ones who need to take a stand. “It is traumatic on them as well because in a way they are being exposed to it and their children are being exposed to it, so you’ve got parents who are trying to explain what is going on down the road and to think of ways so that it makes sense to their children and it’s hard doing that,” Mr Sole said. Family violence doesn’t make sense, but it’s a cycle that’s hard to break. “The aim is to break the cycle of violence and abuse, and we can’t do that unless there is an intervention,” Mr Sole said. By keeping silent, people were condoning what was happening. “If people believe that someone is unsafe then they need to ring police. That’s our responsibility to ensure that people are safe in their own homes,” Mr Sole said. People had a natural ability when it came to judging a situation. “We are almost tuned into it. We know the tone of the voice and the things that will send out signals to say that we have crossed the threshold and this is more than a couple having an argument,” Mr Sole said. the likes of police can actually make things worse. So they can appear to be quite angry towards anyone that interferes because they know that chances are they will actually get punished for that interference. But we also know that without that interference, things won’t change,” Mr Sole said. “It’s a challenge for neighbours because when the police have gone they are the ones that are continuing to live next door.” If a neighbour calls police, they can choose to identify themselves, or not. “The best thing to do is to call the police at the time because poget there. It’s not that we aren’t taking the call seriously, it’s that sometimes we have got to make hard choices and prioritise,” Mr Sole said. Just making a call could help paint a picture for police; if they receive three calls in a week airing concerns about an address, they can pay that address a visit. “I would hope that with the It’s Not Ok campaign that it’s starting to change people’s attitudes, but we still struggle to break down the attitude that what happens in the home is their business,” Mr Sole said. It takes a village to raise a child though and sometimes you want – people to all stay out of their business,” Mr Sole said. Neighbours can help on many levels. If they feel safe to engage with the person they believe to be in danger, they should, but if not they should keep the police informed. “The message ... is for them to think about what it is they want the police to know. Say if it’s the third time in two weeks, and tell us what you’re hearing … all these things are relevant,” he said. Sometimes women reach out to neighbours and ask them to call police if they hear violence occurring because it’s better for them if someone else calls. Other women don’t realise how bad a situation has become. “It’s like the story of the frog and the boiling pot. If you take a pot of boiling water and drop a frog in it, the frog will do anything in its power to get out. But if you put that frog in lukewarm water and turn the element up the frog will adjust to the temperature until it boils to death.” Mr Sole said he often talked to women who didn’t feel they were in danger or at serious risk of injury or death, but what those women didn’t see was the temperature slowly rising. “And this is across every socioeconomic level and society. It’s naïve to think it’s a problem for the poor or for certain cultures,” Mr Sole said. If a child was in the middle of a situation, early intervention was vital because exposure to family violence shaped the person they became.

“The longer you leave it the more you develop the ability to tune out and I think that’s what’s happening with some neighbours – they think it happens every weekend so why should we worry?” But next weekend, the outcome could be much worse and people shouldn’t be afraid to speak up. “It’s important for them to understand that the dynamics of family violence are really complex and if the woman and child in that home are living in fear, from the woman’s perspective initially, any interference from

If people believe that someone is unsafe then they need to ring police lice have the opportunity to turn up while it’s occurring and they can see and hear for themselves, and they can engage with other agencies to get support. “The people might guess it was a neighbour, but it could just as easily have been someone walking past who has contacted us.” Police did have limited resources, so they might not turn up straight away and people should not get disheartened by that. Sometimes they have to prioritise jobs. “So please don’t get despondent if it takes a while for a car to have to pay extra attention to what is going on around you. The days of taking baking to your new neighbours might be gone, but it’s still important to know your neighbours as you never know when they might need you, or you might need them. Reporting suspected family violence in your neighbourhood is not a case of being a nosey neighbour, it is a case of being a caring neighbour. “Often I think the concept of nosey neighbours is probably developed by the perpetrators because that’s exactly what they

Delivering freshwater reform

Exhumation blocked By Dana kiniTa The battle for the body of James Takamore may be heading back to court after a planned exhumation in the Eastern Bay of Plenty was blocked by protesters. The seven-year battle between Mr Takamore’s partner Denise Clarke and his Tuhoe whanau flared up again on Thursday night when Ms Clarke, the couple’s two children, police, lawyers and funeral staff turned up in Kutarere to prepare for yesterday’s planned disinterment of Mr Takamore’s body. It was abandoned after protesters blocked the road. Last night a police spokeswoman said that because the disinterment could not be done peacefully the issue would be back before the Sheriff of the High Court in Christchurch to decide what would happen next. “Whatever happens we may be called to keep the peace again.” Mr Takamore had been living in Christchurch for 20 years before his 2007 death and Ms Clarke, the executor of his estate, planned to bury him there. His Tuhoe family travelled to Christchurch and against Ms Clarke’s wishes brought his body back to Kutarere where he was buried beside his father. Since then a bitter legal war between Ms Clarke and the Takamores has waged with the Supreme Court having the final say in December 2012 when an appeal to keep Mr Takamore in Kutarere was dismissed. Mr Takamore’s sister Josie Takamore said up to 30 police officers were on the road near Kutarere Marae about 5am yesterday for the planned disinterment – although police say there were far fewer. She said police arrived at the urupa (cemetery) and spoke to a kaumatua, who refused to move. “He was saying, ‘No, absolutely no way you’re moving my moko’,” Ms Takamore said. “We had blocked the road down the bottom to the urupa just so [any] digger and excavator couldn’t get through.” Eastern Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Kevin Taylor said police abandoned the planned disinterment for safety reasons. “Our aim was for the disinterment to be carried out in a dignified and non-confrontational way. Safety was a priority and when it became clear that tensions were escalating, and there was a risk that the safety of the contractors might be in jeopardy, a decision was made to withdraw from the site.” Up to 60 whanau members were at the marae on Thursday and yesterday morning. - APNZ

Farmers need to be responsible for their part of the problem but they’re not responsible for all the problems, Minister for the Environment and Selwyn MP Amy Adams says. Mrs Adams was in Ashburton this week to discuss the current state of the Government’s ‘delivering freshwater reform’. She was invited by Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew and spoke to a handful of people. Those present were from North Otago, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury. They were Federated Farmers members and people in the farm industry with questions over the reform. Mrs Adams said the reform was not a choice between “cows

or water bodies” but for the future of water quality some farming practices would need to change. However farmers were not the only polluters, “the worst pollution is in urban waterways,” she said. She described water as one of the most critical issues faced in New Zealand and “one of the most difficult pieces of policy work the Government is dealing with”. Other pollution causes included wild water fowl, and some local body sewerage and waste water discharge systems. With ample water in New Zealand - 145 million litres per person per year - there was no shortage. New Zealand had considerably more water than Australia’s

22 million litres per person per year, or the United Kingdom’s two million litres per person per year. However that water was not always in the right place at the right time, Mrs Adams said. The reform was set to ensure the water was up to a standard that mattered to all New Zealanders. And that it was distributed fairly, efficiently and in more sustainable ways. “It’s good quality by international standards, however there is degradation in some areas,” she said. “The communities would set the base of the water us and where they want to get too.” It was 140 years of historical degradation that needed to be sorted but communities had to start as “it will take quite a bit

of time to improve it,” she said. The Government had told regional councils to maintain or improve the overall water quality in their regions, but planned to help by “supporting community to make decisions, plan and set freshwater objectives and limits.” One of those changes included a bottom line minimum for water quality. They had used the expertise of 60 water scientists to find safe levels of water quality for both ecosystem and human health. Mrs Adams said communities needed to be aware of potential issues, such as sewerage and waste water system upgrades, when they planned water quality in their district as it could “hit them in the pocket”.

I SMOKEFREEROCKQUEST

Kennedy-Clark named in top 30 acts By Erin TaskEr erin.T@Theguardian.co.nz

An Ashburton singer has been named as one of the 30 top acts of this year’s Smokefreerockquest. Country singer Liam Kennedy-Clark from Ashburton College is one of the 10 top solos or duos from the 2014 secondary schools’ music competition, and along with 20 bands from around the country, he’s in the running for the national title. From 30, the finalists will be further narrowed down by a

panel of judges from the music industry and the final six bands and three soloists or duets will play off at the national Smokefreerockquest final in Auckland on September 27. The finalists come from all corners of New Zealand and they’re some of around 700 entries who put their best efforts forward this year. “What we see at this level highlights that there’s a lot more to Smokefreerockquest than just writing a song,” the competition’s founder Glenn Common

said. “This event emphasises the whole package – songwriting, performance and presentation, which is realistic preparation for a career in the music industry.” Last year Smokefreerockquest introduced a separate category for solo-duo performers; for which Kennedy-Clark this year made the cut. The top nine acts will be announced on August 15 and the national finals show will be opened by the winner of the people’s choice award – voting for which will take place via text

message after the nine finalists are named. Prizes up for grabs include musical gear to the tune of $130,000, a $10,000 recording/ music video package from NZonAir, radio promotional support and video play on youth music channel FOUR. Past musical successes of the Smokefreerockquest during its 26 years of existence include Kimbra, Broods, Midnight Youth, Opshop, Evermore, Bic Runga, The Naked and Famous, Elemeno P and Ladyhawke.

Baring Square Church throu nal Wesleyan Church, built was moved alongside the A Baring Square east; standi opened in 1925.

Where to from here T o Ashburton District Methodists, the Baring Square church is their spiritual home, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of many non-Methodists. The church has stood foursquare on the corner of Baring Square and Cameron Street since 1925. It was built at a cost of £9000 pounds ($18,000) and brought together the two branches of Methodism that were thriving in the district. The original Methodist churches, however, were much more modest. The Primitive Methodist church opened in 1875 on Wills Street, while the Wesleyans worshipped in a simple wooden church built on a site on Cameron Street. It opened its doors in 1877 and its congregation grew quite rapidly. In Ashburton’s pioneer days, its site was deemed to be too far from the heart of the growing township and in 1890 a site for the future was secured in Baring Square. In 1892 the original wooden church was then moved to the site on wooden rollers, and was placed on the site of today’s church hall. As Ashburton grew, so too did the Methodist congregation as the two strands of Methodism and the two congregations merged, adding urgency to the need for a new church. Plans were hatched for a replacement, a church on the Baring Square site, a church that could serve Ashburton well into the future. When the new, solid brick church opened, the early church next to it became the parish’s Sunday School. This was demolished in the 1960s and a new

As the community grapples with the future of Ashburton’s earthquake-damaged historic Baring Square Methodist Church, reporter Sue Newman looks at the history of Methodism in Ashburton, the building in which the district’s Methodists have worshipped for decades and the importance of the church to Ashburton’s town centre. church hall and social rooms were built. A later addition linked the church hall and the historic church. With its building programme completed, the church became a solid and enduring part of Ashburton’s townscape. Ever the entrepreneurs, church members realised their place of worship also had other roles it could fulfil in the community. They captilised on the fine views the church tower provided across Ashburthe worst possible news – their church was unsafe to use. Even more distressing was the second wave of bad news. Even if they could afford the huge repair bill, the cost of any insurance would have been crippling. Church members met, they debated and they looked at all options. They were torn between emotion and logic. And they’re still torn. To help them decide the fate of the historic church they this work for Ashburton’s inner town green space. Over the years Baring Square itself has been redesigned and reconfigured to meet changing needs and the Ashburton District Council has bold plans on its books it believes will help the green space finally fulfil its central town function as a gathering place and central pedestrian hub. Those plans, however, are in limbo because of an accompanying high price tag. Ashburton’s original surveyor James Park, in drawing up the street grid for early Ashburton, decided the square should be the haunt of money changers, the hub of business life in the town. It was named for Englishman Lord Ashburton, whose family was associated with the British banking house Baring Bros Ltd. Park gave the post office and courthouse the positions they hold today and he arranged that on the road behind the square the first county council building should be built. This until May housed the district’s museum and art gallery. On the site of today’s church the Bank of New Zealand was to have its first home. This never eventuated and the bank set up business in East Street. That encouraged the early money changers to set up their tents alongside and Mr Park’s dream of a busy, commercial hub around Baring Square began to fade. If one of Baring Square’s anchor tenants is demolished, the square itself may be on the search once again for a new identity.

The elderly church proved no match for the forces of nature week held a public meeting. The decision to demolish or repair, however, will remain in the hands of church members. The church takes pride of place in what is today touted as the heart of Ashburton’s town centre. If it is demolished, it will leave a huge gap in Ashburton’s townscape and in its dwindling stock of buildings of architectural merit. In many ways it and its neighbour, the old art gallery and museum building, are the frame-

ton as a pay-to-view spot and the acoustics in the body of the church meant it became a sought after venue for choral performances. Fate stepped in in the form of the September 2010 Canterbury earthquakes and again in February 2011. The elderly church proved no match for the forces of nature. Its brick walls shook and cracks opened up in many places. As the earthquake mop-up began, engineers were called in and parishoners were given

The students asked the mayor questions about life here and similarities with Japan before enjoying a morning tea. Mt Hutt College and Yumegaoka are ‘sister schools’ with the Yumara prefecture in Japan. Yumegaoka was an alpine town like Methven, but well known for its hot springs. The annual school cultural exchange was a part of the Japanese/New Zealand exchange programme. There were seven students from Mt Hutt College and support in Yumegaoka last month. I ASHBURTON TENANT

Official warning for HNZ tenant By Erin TaskEr erin.t@theguardian.co.nz

An Ashburton tenant has been warned following an alleged incident of verbal abuse against a Housing New Zealand tenancy manager this week. Housing New Zealand (HNZ) South Island regional manager Symon Leggett confirmed the incident occurred on Wednesday and it had left the female staff member shaken. The tenancy manager had been advised to report the matter to police. “I take the health and safety of my staff extremely seriously and this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated,” Mr Leggett said. He said the tenant – also a woman – was personally delivered a letter telling her that and warning any repeat of this type of incident would result in Hous-

ing New Zealand applying for a Tenancy Tribunal order to end that tenancy. HNZ can also consider suspending tenants from reapplying for social housing for up to 12 months with HNZ if there is credible evidence of anti-social behaviour. “This ensures that HNZ is able to act as a responsible social housing landlord by ensuring that the community can all enjoy a happy and safe environment to live in while simultaneously protecting our staff and other tenants from unlawful or anti-social behaviour,” Mr Leggett said. According to HNZ incidents of abuse and assaults were not common. If an address was identified as having potential issues, staff were made aware and appropriate steps were taken to ensure the safety of staff.

Woman indecently assaulted A 60-year-old woman was indecently assaulted by a young man on a Northland walking track yesterday afternoon. The woman was on the Haruru Falls track between 12.30pm and 1pm when she was accosted by the man who did an indecent act in front her before indecently assaulting her, police said. The man ran off afterwards. The woman was shaken but unhurt. Police were concerned about the man’s behaviour and would like to hear from anyone who knew of any similar acts in the area or who knew him. Anyone with information can contact Sergeant Kevin Milne at Kawakawa police on 09 404 3150 or anonymously to Crimestoppers 0800 555 111. - APNZ

In brief Gaza truce over Israel and Gaza militants resumed cross-border attacksyesterday, after a three-day truce expired and Egyptian-brokered talks on a new border deal for blockaded Gaza hit a deadlock. It was not clear if the renewed fighting would derail the Cairo talks aimed at reaching a sustainable truce, or whether the Egyptian mediators can find a way to prevent a further escalation and a return to full-out war. Militants from Gaza fired first, after the temporary truce expired at 5pm NZ time yesterday, launching 21 rockets toward Israel. Most landed in open fields, but two were intercepted over the coastal city of Ashkelon. The Israeli military said it responded with strikes “across Gaza.” - AP

Tampering alleged The chief defence lawyer for Oscar Pistorius, delivering his final arguments in the athlete’s murder trial, focused on allegations that police mishandled evidence at the house where Pistorius fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Lawyer Barry Roux said that items in Pistorius’ bedroom, near the bathroom where he killed Steenkamp, may have been moved around by investigating o cers. The items, including fans, a bed cover and an electrical extension cord, are relevant to the prosecution’s argument that Pistorius is lying about his actions in the bedroom just before he shot Steenkamp through a closed toilet door in the bathroom. - AP

Ebola spread ‘inevitable’ Ebola’s spread to the United States is “inevitable” because of the nature of global airline travel, but any outbreak is not likely to be large, US health authorities say. Already one man with dual US-Liberian citizenship has died from Ebola after becoming sick on a plane from Monrovia to Lagos and exposing as many as seven other people in Nigeria. More cases of Ebola moving across borders via air travel are expected, as West Africa faces the largest outbreak of the haemorrhagic virus in history, Tom Frieden, the head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said. The virus spreads by close contact with bodily fluids and has killed 932 people and infected more than 1700 since March in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria and Liberia. “It is certainly possible that we could have ill people in the US who develop Ebola after having been exposed elsewhere,” Frieden told a hearing of the House sub-committee on Africa, global health, global human rights and international organisations. “We are all connected and inevitably there will be travellers, American citizens and others who go from these three countries - or from Lagos if it doesn’t get it under control and are here with symptoms. “But we are confident that there will not be a large Ebola outbreak in the US.” There was no treatment or vaccine for Ebola, but it could be contained if patients were swiftly isolated and adequate protective measures were used, he said. However, Ken Isaacs, vicepresident of program and government relations at the Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse, said the world was woefully ill-equipped to handle the spread of Ebola. “It is clear that the disease is uncontained and it is out of control in West Africa,” he told the hearing. “The international response to the disease has been a failure.” Samaritan’s Purse arranged the medical evacuation of US doctor Kent Brantly and days later, missionary Nancy Writebol, from Monrovia to a sophisticated Atlanta hospital. Both fell ill with Ebola while treating patients in the Liberian capital, and their health is now improving. - AFP

Decade after tsunami, girl finds family An Indonesian girl swept away by the devastating 2004 tsunami has been reunited with her family a decade after she was given up for dead, her mother said. “God has given us a miracle,” said Jamaliah, the mother of Raudhatul Jannah, who went missing when she was just four. Jannah and her seven-yearold brother were carried off when huge waves struck their home in West Aceh district on December 26, 2004. Jamaliah, 42, and her husband survived the quaketriggered tsunami that killed tens of thousands in Aceh, on western Sumatra island, and had long ago given up hope of finding either of their children alive. But in June, Jamaliah’s brother spotted a girl in a village walking home from school who bore a striking resemblance to Jannah. He made inquiries and found out that the girl had been caught up in the tsunami, and was swept from Aceh to some remote islands southwest of the province. A fisherman rescued the girl, took her back to the mainland and handed her to his mother, who raised the youngster, according to Jamaliah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. After the tip-off from her brother, Jamaliah and her husband visited the girl, now aged 14, in late June -- and discovered it was indeed their daughter who went missing a decade earlier. “My husband and I are very happy,” Jamaliah told AFP. “I am so grateful to God for reuniting us with our child after 10 years of being separated.” “My heart beat so fast when I saw her. I hugged her and she hugged me back and felt so comfortable in my arms,” she said, adding that she could not stop the “tears from flowing” during the emotional reunion. Jannah, who was called Wenni by the elderly woman who raised her, returned to her hometown to be with her parents on Wednesday. Her brother, Arif Pratama Rangkuti, also survived after being swept away to the same islands, Jamaliah said, but added his whereabouts were unknown. The tsunami killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh, and tens of thousands of others in other countries around the Indian Ocean. - AFP

Russia ‘a bully’ Australia’s prime minister dubbed Russia “a bully” and threatened stronger sanctions against the country following Russia’s ban on most Western food imports. Russia’s government banned most food imports from the West, including the US, European Union and Australia, as retaliation against sanctions related to the crisis in Ukraine. Mr Abbott said the ban would have a relatively small impact on his country. - AP

In brief Cowboys wary of Tigers Coach and captain dramas, club in-fighting, continued defeats and now injuries are plaguing Wests Tigers. But the resurgent North Queensland Cowboys are braced for nothing but the best from a Robbie Farah-led outfit hellbent on ending their week from hell on a high tonight. The late injury-forced losses of Luke Brooks (shoulder) and Pat Richards (hamstring) has compounded the huge problems at the Tigers, meaning they will be missing nearly all of their regular starting backline in Townsville. “They’ll be desperate for a win and no one likes copping the criticism they’ve copped the last couple of weeks,” North Queensland coach Paul Green said. “(Farah’s) got a lot of tricks in the bag and I’m sure he’ll be pulling them all out.” - AAP

Raiders backing Ricky The Canberra Raiders say they are playing for more than just the future of embattled coach Ricky Stuart against Parramatta in Darwin tonight. Raiders coach Stuart came in for heavy criticism following the side’s 54-18 loss to the Warriors last week. Following three straight defeats the Raiders are 15th, equal with last-placed Cronulla on 14 points but ahead on for-and-against. Should the Raiders finish on the bottom of the ladder, it would be Stuart’s third consecutive wooden spoon. Prop Brett White said while there was a desire to prove the detractors wrong, they were also playing for personal pride after their embarrassing loss to the Warriors last week. “We want to win, not only for (Stuart), but for the club, our fans and ourselves.” - AAP

Feleti Mateo: Warriors still need to be on their guard against the NRL cellar-dwellers.

Struggling Sharks can still bite By David Skipwith Warriors back-rower Feleti Mateo says his side need to be on their guard when they face the Cronulla Sharks at Mt Smart Stadium tomorrow. Despite sitting at the bottom of the NRL ladder and missing several big name players, including New South Wales State of Origin star Luke Lewis, ball-playing back-rower Wade Graham, and former Australian representative Anthony Tupou, Mateo insists the Sharks still need to be respected. With captain Paul Gallen making a return from a bicep injury sustained against Newcastle back in round 18, and hard-running props Sam Tagataese and Andrew Fifita both in good form, Cronulla still possess plenty of power up front. “I think they’re a side that’s been underestimated. They still have international and Origin players in the team and a pretty big forward pack, so we’re going to have our work cut out for us this week,” Mateo said. The 29-year-old veteran has been at the forefront of the Warriors’ rising form in recent weeks, providing some much needed attacking spark in the absence of injured halfback Shaun Johnson. He laid on two tries for prop Sam Rapira in last Sunday’s big win over Canberra but insists he feels no added pressure to produce the big plays with Johnson missing, and credits stand-in No 7 Thomas Leuluai for keeping them on track for their first finals appearance since 2011. “Tommy’s come in and done a wonderful job. He’s got plenty of experience and we don’t lose anything when Tommy comes in. “For me, I’m just trying to do my job. I’m just trying to get the balance right and leave the other stuff to Tommy.” The Warriors will also be without the blockbusting power of centre Konrad Hurrell, but Mateo believes they have the depth to cover his loss and says they should take confidence from playing well without having big names on deck. “It’s always nice to have your best side out there but to the club’s credit we’ve got a lot of depth here. “We lose Konrad [Hurrell] and get a guy like Tui [Lolohea] to come in on the wing and show what he can do. We’re not losing much in any position if someone goes down. “We’ve still got a long way to go in terms of where we want to be but we’re definitely on the rise and things are looking up.” Coach Andrew McFadden says it’s imperative his pack produce another dominant performance and is relying on them to set the tone for his side over the final five rounds of the competition. “We certainly know that if we want to be playing at the right end of the season in the finals that our forward pack is going to need to be dominant. “Against a team where that’s probably their real strength this weekend, is their forward pack, that’s going to be a big challenge for them.” - NZH

McLean out of clash Melbourne forward Jordan McLean has been ruled out of the Storm’s NRL match with Newcastle, avoiding an emotional first clash with the Knights since the tragic Alex McKinnon tackle. The Storm said McLean had withdrawn from Saturday’s match at Hunter Stadium because of a hamstring injury. He did not train on Wednesday after pulling up sore from their win over the Wests Tigers on Monday night. The club said medical staff were concerned McLean would not get through the Knights match and his replacement would be named before kickoff. McLean was suspended for seven weeks for a lifting tackle on McKinnon in round three that left the Knights’ forward with a broken neck and fighting to walk again. - AAP

Mini lauds brother Gold Coast’s Mark Minichiello believes no other footballer would have come back from the injuries that threatened to destroy his brother Anthony’s NRL career. The Sydney Roosters captain announced on Monday that this season would be his last, meaning Monday’s clash between the Titans and the premiers will also be the final time the Minichiello brothers face off on the football field. Anthony rebounded from a series of debilitating back injuries between 2006 and 2009 to lead his beloved Roosters to the 2013 premiership, and his younger brother says that just shows what a champion he is. - AAP

Team NZ confirms America’s Cup challenge By Dana Johannsen “This is the official start of a long, hard journey.” With those words Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton confirmed the team will have another crack at wrestling the America’s Cup away from Oracle Team USA. The Kiwi syndicate, backed by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, became the first team to officially announce their challenge for the 35th America’s Cup yesterday. Further entry announcements are expected to follow today. It is believed Italian team Luna Rossa and Artemis submitted their entries before Emirates Team New Zealand, but have yet to officially announce their challenge. Others who have signalled they’ll be throwing their hat in the ring are Ben Ainslie Racing (GBR) and a French challenge led by Franck Cammas, bringing the total of challengers for the 2017 event to five - two more than in San Francisco last year. The new challenger of record (COR), responsible for negotiating the rules on behalf of the challengers, is also expected to be revealed by America’s Cup authorities over the weekend after the original COR, Team Australia, withdrew from the event last month. The role goes to the first challenger to submit their entry, rumoured to be Luna Rossa. The Italian team led the way in rallying their fellow intended challengers to issue a joint statement to reiterate their support for the event following Team Australia’s withdrawal. Although Team NZ were excluded from that meeting, in keeping with the new spirit of co-operativeness sweeping the Cup world, Dalton expressed the team’s willingness to work constructively with the defender and fellow challengers. “We look forward to working with the other teams to create a great event,” he said. - NZH

Currie chasing second win By Jonathan Leask Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Methven multisporter Braden Currie is in the Czech Republic for his fifth Xterra race on the European circuit tonight (NZ time). The two-time Coast to Coast champion has enjoyed some success in his European excursion and will be out to add a second win. Currie was second in his opening race in Switzerland behind current Spanish world champion Ruben Ruzafa, and repeated the result in France a week later before taking the win in Sweden – although Ruzafa wasn’t in that race. A fortnight ago he produced a gutsy effort to come in second again to Ruzafa in the Italy Xterra. “It was a day I won’t forget in a hurry,” Currie said in his postrace blog. “One of those days you have to look at in a positive light and take all the learning you can from it.” The hectic travel and racing schedule had taken its toll, and Currie went into the last race feeling flat and eventually had to call on his trademark offroad running speed to move up into second after a disappointing effort on the mountain bike.

“On the steep tech descent that I normally fizz on I felt as if I looked like a beginner skier, doing a pizza in fresh powder. “The second lap of the ride didn’t brighten up and I found myself wishing I could just pull the pin and go home.” With his vocal support crew, wife Sally and children Tarn and Bella cheering him on in the rain, he dug deep to make up a two minute gap on the run- but was still over four minutes behind Ruzafa. Currie will be hoping to avoid that flat feeling when he goes up against Ruzafa again as he knows it will take a huge effort to take down the Spaniard. “[Ruben] has to be the most dedicated and focused athlete I have met. “He has taken it to the next level, and showed me that maybe it’s time to focus and look after myself more if I want to be racing at his level.” After the stopover in the Czech Republic, it’s off to the German Xterra next weekend which doubles as the 2014 ITU World off road Triathlon Championships. After that it is home to New Zealand for his own designed race, Red Bull Defiance in Wanaka in October where he will race with Dougal Allan.

Djokovic crashes World number one Novak Djokovic slumped to a lacklustre 6-2 6-2 defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the ATP Tour’s Toronto Masters third round yesterday and was joined at the exit door by third-seeded doubles partner Stan Wawrinka. Newly-married Djokovic, who needed almost three hours to get past Gael Monfils in his opening tie this week, looked under-prepared against Tsonga, the powerful French 13th seed. Wimbledon champion Djokovic finished with 18 unforced errors and dropped serve four times. Tsonga saved a break point in the final game of the 63-minute rout, with the heavy hitter pounding over a serve which Djokovic could not handle on match point. - AFP

Durant out of Team USA Braden Currie celebrates a Coast to Coast win with son Tarn. The Tall Blacks will still have a monumental mountain to climb when they meet Team USA at the basketball World Cup in Spain despite the withdrawal of Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant. The NBA’s reigning MVP had been training with the national side under coach Mike Krzyzewski but said he needed a break and wouldn’t take part in the global tournament. The Tall Blacks meet the US in their third Group C match on September 2. Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vucinic won’t settle on his final 12 for the World Cup until roughly a week before the tournament begins. - APNZ

Black claims Bowman Cup again By Jonathan Leask Jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Wakanui Black handed Wakanui Blue a seventh straight loss in the Mid-South Canterbury hockey competition on Thursday night. Black claimed a 5-3 win over Blue to seal a clean sweep of wins in the local derby to lock away the Bowman Cup as the top Mid Canterbury men’s side. Last year the two sides played out three draws and needed to meet in a midweek game to determine who lifted the trophy, with Black prevailing 4-3 for a 7-6 aggregate win for the season. This year Black has taken the three game series with an overall 12-4 score-line and with the McCosker Trophy, top team at the end of the round robin, already won heading into the final round Black’s next focus will be the semi-finals next weekend where they will attempt to go for a fourth straight Walker and Hall shield triumph. As for Blue, following the end

of season slump that has seen them lose their last seven games, they will end their season with a demoralising fifth and sixth playoff match against Timaru Boys next Saturday. But first both sides are in Timaru today to conclude the round robin, where Blue clash with Cambridge while Black meets Timaru Boys’. Both the women’s teams are also in Timaru as their competition have the first weekend of the playoffs. Hampstead take on defending champions St Andrews in the major semi-final, with the winner advancing straight to the final on August 23 while the loser will meet the winner of the minor semi-final, between Geraldine and Craighead, next weekend. Hampstead-Collegians face Timaru Girls for the second week in a row but they will be hoping for a better outcome than the 1-2 loss they suffered at home last weekend.

Sailors right on track Kiwi sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have continued their climb up the rankings in the 49er fleet at the Olympic test event in Rio, moving into a share of the lead ahead of the final day. The world champion pairing ensured the New Zealand team remain on track for multiple podium finishes as the Aquece Rio regatta, with Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie maintaining their lead in the 470, while Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech are second in the 49erFX. Aleh and Powrie held onto their lead in the women’s 470 with a second place in their only race of the day. However they were beaten on the water by closest rivals Anne Haeger and Bri Provancha (USA) who have edged to within one point on the leaderboard. No racing took place in the women’s ski event yesterday, meaning Maloney and Meech progress to the final day lying second overall. - NZH

In brief Wallabies buoyant A week today, the All Blacks will be in Sydney - looking to extend their run of consecutive victories to a world record 18. Facing them will be a Wallaby side that is rising in confidence: a Wallaby team that has not lost since October last year and is slowly finding a new, Australian, identity and way of playing under coach Ewen McKenzie. The Waratahs maiden Super Rugby title last Saturday was a sign that rugby is resurgent across the Tasman: not the busted flush it was this time last year. Not only have the Wallabies found a new coach, they also have in Israel Folau, Kurtley Beale and Will Skelton three players with genuine X-factor. All three have special gifts that is helping build optimism in Australia that finally, they have the missing ingredient to end one of the most frustrating periods in their history - they have gone 12 years without getting their hands on the silverware. - APNZ

Ferns up against it Rawinia Everitt may have to call on all the famed mental toughness of her favourite player Brad Thorn as the Blacks Ferns face the USA in a fight for their playo s’ life at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in France. The Manurewa loose forward/lock was prominent in the first two matches, and was one of the better forwards in the dramatic 17-14 loss to Ireland on Wednesday at Marcoussis. “Obviously we’re disappointed but we’ve had to park it,” Everitt said. “Everyone has made themselves accountable. Everyone deals with losses di erently, but we have each other’s back.” Reviews of the USA’s game show a side that will test the Black Ferns, especially in the pack. The Black Ferns must beat USA and secure a bonus point to have any chance of filling the fourth qualifying position for the semi-finals. - NZH

Familiar foe for ABs Mishaps have withered in the past decade of All Blacks rugby as they stare down a piece of history with the Wallabies, who have been their most troubling rival in recent seasons. The All Blacks have dominated the Bledisloe Cup since 2003 and have a target of extending that sequence into a record run of 18 successive wins when they visit Sydney next Saturday. Coach Steve Hansen will eyeball his troops to question whether they have put in all the work they need for Sydney. “If we make [preparation] bone-deep we give ourselves an opportunity to turn up in a mental and physical state which allows us to play well and we’re not a bad team when we turn up like that,” - APNZ Hansen said.

Return of Sonny Bill Dual international Sonny Bill Williams already has his eyes set on the All Blacks’ defence of their Rugby World Cup title next year as his days in rugby league near an end. The Roosters back-rower is sidelined with a thumb injury for the next fortnight and has only a handful of games left in the NRL as he chases back-to-back titles for the Tricolours. Then he returns his focus to rugby. “The World Cup is coming up and I want to be a part of that,” Williams said. - AAP

The Hanan Shield isn’t up for grabs, but Mid Canterbury players have plenty to play for against South Canterbury in the final pre-season hit-out before the Heartland Rugby Championship begins. The pre-season started in spectacular fashion with a win over Southland in Oamaru last weekend, setting a standard that Glenn Moore wants to see kept up. That puts pressure on the players returning, and yet to return, to the squad. “Last weekend has created a bit more competition, and everyone is well aware of that. “Unfortunately we are having a run of injuries which isn’t helping.” The list of unavailable players contains Kody Nordqvist, Brenton Connell, Eric Duff, Andrew Fluker, Jackson Donlan, Esera Lauina, Tevita Ula, Will Mackenzie and Richard

Catherwood, all of whom are expected to be fit for the Heartland Championship opener in a fortnight, but whether there is room for them will be seen at next weekend’s training, where a reduced squad is expected to be named. Southbridge duo Peni Manumanuniwila and Willie McGoon are also unavailable, as they will be in action against Waihora in the Ellesmere final in Darfield. Today’s game is the final live audition for the Heartland Championship, and it provides another opportunity for players that are available to put their hand up. There are only two changes to the forward pack, where hooker Jon Sharpe is between two different bookends with Matt Groom and Simon Fleetwood swapping with Tukulua Tolu and Robert Kwong. The squad is light in the locking department and loose forwards with Alipeti Polotele set to cover both, however, Seta

Koroitamana - a flanker during the club season for Rakaia – is in the starting XV. Koroitamana will be on the wing again after his explosive speed proved quite the handful for Southland and with Moore potentially leaning towards some “forward heavy benches” during the competition, Koroitamana’s ability to cover wing and flanker bodes well for his inclusion. “It’s a scenario we want tried and measured for if it comes up later in the season. We don’t want to get to a game and want a 5-2 split without having tried out the option.” The rest of the backline is rejigged again with Davey Maw given the nod at halfback with Cawte Whiting on the bench. Ryan Ashworth and import Dwayne Burrows form the midfield combination with player of origin Matt Thatcher joining Koroitamana on the wing, and Andrew Letham the custodian at fullback.

Nete Caucau will be featuring for Ashburton College when they meet Rangiora in the final round of the Crusaders secondary schools’ competition at Allenton, before taking his place on the bench later on. Josh Nonu and Josh Walker are the outside back cover on the bench. It will be South Canterbury’s first hit-out, and they are without several key players - including captain Andrew Scarlett and hooker Nathan Tubb. Moore still anticipates a strong opposition and will demand a strong performance in the final warm-up before the Meads Cup defence begins against the West Coast on August 23. As for the Hanan Shield, it won’t go on the line until holders Mid Canterbury put it up in the grand final rematch with North Otago in round seven of the Heartland Championship, followed by South Canterbury in week eight.

Makos present a strong line-up Tim Perry and Crusaders team-mate Kieran Fonotia were absent from the Tasman Makos’ pre-season draw with the Manawatu Turbos’ on Thursday night. Along with Perry and Fonotia, Super Rugby players Shane Christie, Liam Squire and Joe Wheeler were also absent from the rain-affected match in Nelson. Chiefs players James Lowe, Tom Marshall and Tevita Koloamatangi all had run on starts, and New Zealand Sevens representative Bryce Heem, fresh from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, came off the bench. The Makos have gained the services of former All Black halfback Jimmy Cowan this season after the 32-year-old returned from Gloucester while hooker Quentin MacDonald also returns to New Zealand rugby from a stint with Irish club Munster. Tasman also have an exciting prospect in New Zealand under-20 representative utility back David Havili. Hurricane Marty Banks was missing with a knee injury but is expected to recover from in time for the start of the ITM Cup, when the Makos host Hawkes Bay in Blenheim next Sunday. Crusaders retain Nadolo Blockbusting wing Nemani Nadolo has resigned with the Crusaders for two years. Nadolo will return to the NEC Green Rockets team in Japan and play out the season with them before rejoining the Crusaders in 2015. “We are grateful to NEC for their cooperation and support in allowing Nemani to commit to the Crusaders,” chief executive Hamish Riach said. Nadolo was credited for helping the Crusaders turn around a poor start to 2014, with the team falling just short of an eighth Super Rugby crown when they lost 33-32 to the Waratahs in Sydney last Saturday. Crusaders head coach Todd Blackadder said Nadolo has become a core figure in the Crusaders in his first season here, and has a lot more to contribute. “Nemani has fitted so well into our environment. “He is much loved by his teammates and by our fans so we are thrilled that we will all be able to enjoy more of the big man next year. “The skills and presence that Nemani brings to this team are immense. “He has been a vital part of our successes this year and the growth that we saw from when he joined the team to the end of this season is just an indication of how much more he has to give,” Blackadder said. Nadolo said he has had one of the most enjoyable periods in his playing career over the last six months with the Crusaders, and he cannot wait to continue that in 2015. “The Crusaders are a team I have always looked up to and I feel blessed to have been welcomed into this team,” Nadolo said. - NZH

In brief Tiger struggling Tiger Woods recovered from back spasms in three days to play in the 96th PGA Championship, but his struggles o the tee could have him out by the weekend. Looking less like a 14-time major champion and more like a 38-year-old with a recent history of nagging injuries, Woods fired a three-over-par 74 yesterday. “It wasn’t very good,” Woods said. “A lot of bad shots and I never got a putt to the hole. I hit all my lines. Just for some reason I thought they were going to be a little bit quicker and I didn’t make the adjustment well enough. “I had plenty of looks to turn my round around and post something even par, even under par.” - AFP

‘Sloppy’ round for Scott By Ben eveRill A frustrated Adam Scott headed straight to the practice range following a poor opening to the PGA Championship. The world No.2, only dethroned as No.1 last week by Rory McIlroy, bumbled his way to an even par 71 on a day ripe for scoring. “It’s the easiest major set up you will ever see, it is a piece of cake out there,” said Scott, six shots off the pace, tied 54th, and facing a tough chase for the next three days. “That better be my poor round out of the way or I won’t be even close.” Playing partner Lee Westwood showed the way with a six-under 65, matched by Americans Ryan Palmer and Kevin Chappell, while McIlroy was one of five just a shot back. Scott was wayward off the tee from his opening swing, blasting his driver well right of the 10th fairway. And while he still managed to make a birdie on the par five hole, he was never really in sync. “I didn’t play very well today,” he said. “My rhythm is out. I am not hitting it down my line and that makes it hard to get around. “And then a couple of errors compounded things and, scrambling here was hard. “You have to make all of your putts when you are not hitting it good and I didn’t make them all today ... you have to keep somehow salvaging par and you can have a good round if you do that, but I didn’t. “My swing was coming around in practice but it is always a little difficult when you hit one out of rhythm off the first tee, it’s not the most ideal start, and hard to get the level of trust going out there.” Scott’s run of seven pars, most of which involved scrambling, was broken by a poor bogey on the par five 18th - after driving into a bunker and laying up, Scott left his approach some 15 metres from the hole. The lag putt was decent but the 2013 Masters champion then missed the short one for par to turn even. He bounced back by playing the first hole, his 10th, with precision, tapping in a two-foot birdie putt. But back-to-back bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes stunted any thoughts of a run up the boards. needing to make a nine-foot birdie putt on his last hole just to break even with the - AAP card. Tiger Woods: Not happy.

McIlroy stalks Westwood England’s Lee Westwood finished with a flurry to set up the chance to break one of major golf’s biggest droughts at the US PGA Championship in Kentucky. Westwood, who hasn’t won a major in 66 attempts, took the first round lead with Americans Kevin Chappell and Ryan Palmer at Valhalla Golf Club. The trio carded six-under rounds of 65 with Westwood making five birdies in his last six holes. World No.1 Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, No.4 Henrik Stenson of Sweden, American veteran Jim Furyk, England’s Chris Wood and Edourdo Molinari of Italy shared fourth just one shot o the lead. - AAP

Ko makes steady start in Michigan By Daniel RichaRDson With her next major appearance only a week away, Lydia Ko has made a steady start at the LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 17-year-old is in a share of 10th place after carding a two-under 69 during her opening round yesterday, which included three birdies and a bogey, at the Blythefield Country Club. Ko, who won her last tournament at the Marathon Classic in mid-July as she ticked over the $1 million-mark in earnings for the season, is four strokes back from leader Sandra Gal (-6). Korean Inbee Park is second at five-under, while Australian Katherine Kirk is one shot back in third. Next week, Ko will line up in the LPGA Championship in New York as she bids to become the youngest player to win a major. Kiwi PGA Tour professionals Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee both have a week off as they didn’t have a start in the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. On the second-tier Web.com Tour, Steven Alker made a hot start to the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Missouri as he was five-under through 11 holes in a share of fifth place before inclement weather caused a halt to the opening round. Alker, who has all-but secured a PGA Tour card for next season, was two shots back from American Martin Piller (-7) and play was expected to continue later today. Across the globe, Hamilton’s Mathew Perry started the Yulongwan Yunnan Open on the PGA Tour China in terrible fashion yesterday as he carded an 11-over 83 to sit in 123rd place with little hope of making the cut. Meanwhile, James Beale has claimed the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship title after rolling in a long birdie putt on the third playoff hole at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. The Aucklander finished 72 holes tied atop the leaderboard alongside Canada’s Taylor Pendrith and American Jonathan Garrick at six-under par. The trio battled it out over three holes before Beale’s 22foot birdie putt found the bottom of the cup on the par-four 18th hole. “Honestly I don’t know if it’s good or bad but the thought went through my mind just as I was standing over it that this is for the win,” said Beale when describing his winning putt. “As I looked at the hole I just kind of stroked it and tapped it down there, and it just tracked towards the hole and I couldn’t believe it.” - APNZ

Dufner withdraws Defending champion Jason Dufner, who has been battling a neck injury, withdrew from the 96th PGA Championship after only 10 holes of his opening round yesterday. The 37-year-old American who outduelled Jim Furyk in last year’s final round at Oak Hill to win his first major title was eight-over par when he decided to pull out. Dufner, who stands in position to qualify for the US Ryder Cup team, had been troubled by bulging neck discs that limited his head and shoulder mobility. After starting ythe tournament with a double bogey and following that with bogeys at the second and third holes, Dufner took a bogey at the sixth and endured a triple-bogey nightmare at the par-5 10th that pushed him to walk o the course. - AFP

Domestic cricket’s future bright BY DYLAN CLEAVER New Zealand Cricket’s radical overhaul of domestic cricket is nearly complete, and the six major associations have agreed to initiatives it is hoped will revitalise the game. The architect of the revamp, NZC’s general manager of domestic cricket, David Cooper, has spent the past year trying to win the major associations Northern Districts, Auckland, Central Districts, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago - over to a vision that will “maximise entertainment, high performance and commercial outcomes in our domestic game”. The main points of the revamp are: The three formats of the game will be locked into separate windows. Associations will be able to sell part of their operation to private or third-party investors. There will be an increased focus on promoting and marketing the domestic game. Although more self-sufficiency in the associations will be sought, domestic cricket will still be administered by NZ Cricket. This final point is a departure from the thinking when the plan was presented as a discussion paper. Then, the idea was for a separate company to be set up to run domestic cricket. This was the biggest stumbling block for the associations, which felt NZC was best equipped to deliver all the promotion and marketing objectives. The recurring complaint about domestic cricket is that people rarely know it’s on. Apart from the T20 HRV Cup, it has little television presence. The new participation agreement will lock in schedules, possibly for the next four years, in which the four-day Plunket Shield will bookend the season, and the T20 competition will be played before Christmas, followed by the Ford Trophy. Sky remains the only broadcaster with capacity to cover cricket properly and after strong ratings last season (the Brendon McCullum chase for 300 is understood to be the highest-rating cricket broadcast in New Zealand history), it has paid a premium to lock down - NZH the sport.

Gunners toughen up Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his club have lost the vulnerability that once made their players easy prey for Sunday’s Community Shield opponents Manchester City. Bacary Sagna became the third player to join City from Arsenal in recent seasons when he swapped the Emirates Stadium for the Etihad Stadium in June, but Wenger’s side are now operating on something approaching an equal footing in the transfer market. Having signed Mesut Ozil in a clubrecord deal a year ago, Arsenal bought Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona in a move reportedly worth around STG30 million last month, and Wenger feels they can no longer be considered the poor relations among the Premier League’s leading sides. “We are less vulnerable, that’s for sure. Because in the last two years we bought Ozil and Sanchez. Five years ago we would have lost Ozil and Sanchez.” - AFP

Super Rugby outgrowing itself? I s Super Rugby getting just too big? (no, we’re not talking about last weekend’s activities. At all). The Waratahs are physically our nearest neighbours outside New Zealand, and yet we didn’t get to play them in a preliminary series that took half a year - isn’t that beyond weird? And all the talk is of making it bigger, bigger bigger . . . because there’s more profit that way. Couple of weeks ago I saw an interview with a Rugby World Cup official, and he was stressing loudly the main aim of next year’s big circus. Was it producing the finest spectacle yet? Showcasing rugby to the world? Getting grassroots rugby back on track? No, it was must make a profit, must make a profit, must make a bigger profit. He sounded very much like a television religious evangelist, exhorting his flock to bring more money, or maybe a DotCom political rallyist. The actual game wasn’t mentioned, it’s just a minor part of proceedings obviously. That’s how Super Rugby is looking; it will soon take nine or 10 months to get through a bloated schedule, as teams travel further and further to play games in Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Nandi, or alternatively stay home and pointlessly smash each other again and again in repeated home derbies, games that should instead be real highlights of the competition. Tough gig for the promoters to get the punters out for a ‘Glorious South Island Derby’ when the teams have played each other three times in two months already. How many people do you know who don’t even bother watching in February/March, because it’s just way too early for serious rugby? Instead they should go the other way. Have a qualifying competition for all the teams clamouring to get into the big time, with a promotion/relegation weekend,

I WEST COAST

Rural broadband ‘not fast enough’ By Aimee Brill The West Coast needs internet speed of at least 20 megabits per second (Mbps) to be able to be called an efficient information technology (IT) area, says Buller mayor Garry Howard. The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI), the collaboration between Vodafone and Chorus (Telecom) to bring broadband to rural areas of New Zealand, aims to deliver peak broadband internet speeds of at least 5Mbps to 86 per cent of rural homes and businesses. Mr Howard said 5Mbps was too weak. In areas such as Karamea, where fibre optic cable was yet to be laid, internet speeds were 2Mbps at the best of times on its current copper network, he said. There were still 1587 households West Coast-wide that were receiving less than 5Mbps per second, he said. Those households were part of the 14 per cent that would not receive faster internet as a result of the RBI. He said 399 households on the West Cost were too isolated to have any form of the internet, but some of those people may not want it. Representatives from Vodafone and Chorus visited Westport yesterday, and presented to interested locals, the progress that had been made with the RBI. Vodafone RBI community relations manager Caitlin Metz said Vodafone was ahead of schedule for meeting its end of year targets. One of Vodafone’s roles in the collaboration was to erect new and upgrade a number of cell sites across the country to enable wireless broadband via the 3G and 4G networks. Wireless rural broadband was now available to 4700 households on the Coast because most of the 11 new cell sites had now been built, she said. The sites at Hector and Karamea were waiting on a discussion taking place between Chorus and Buller Electricity with regards to the fibre optic cable they needed to operate. Ms Metz said she hoped the sites would be operational by December. - WPN

here are a number of good reasons for asset planning, but the main purpose is to protect family wealth that has been built up, in many cases over several generations. At the simplest level asset planning can be making sure your current will is up-to-date and valid. At the other end of the scale you may want to safeguard assets by transferring items such as the family home into a Trust or to develop more complex structures that protect your high value assets. In all cases, whatever the scale or complexity, asset planning is something everyone should undertake. The most common claimants that people want to protect their assets from are creditors, government, former spouses and other family members. A well-constructed will, that clearly records the final wishes and instructions, is one document everyone should have. It is important that your will is carefully drafted to ensure assets are distributed

in line with your wishes. General insurance and life insurance are other simple tools you should consider as part of your plan. It is also important to note that marriage

may invalidate a will made prior to that marriage. We suggest that wills are reviewed from time to time to ensure they meet your current requirements. Trusts have been in exist-

ence for centuries, and are the traditional way to protect assets for intergenerational transfer. Trusts can give protection from relationship property claims, as property owned by the Trust will be separate property. However you should be aware of the latest legislation and you should seek professional advice before changing any structures where relationship property is involved. They come in a large variety of formats so you need to make sure the trust meets your requirements and circumstances. It is common practice these days to have your main assets transferred into a discretionary trust, which offers more flexibility when dealing with your estate. A good plan will be unique and include the best options to suit your circumstances and is worth discussing with your professional advisors.

OUR VIEW

Mind your language Stu Oldham EDITOR

A

n Internet Mana’s campaign video is emblematic of how far some politicians are from truly engaging with the people who will one day lead our country. The video shows Internet Party founder Kim Dotcom rallying a crowd of about a thousand students at an Internet Mana event in Christchurch. The sometime internet tycoon asks the crowd “are you ready to start a revolution”, “are you ready to bring down the Government” and “are you ready to extradite John Key”. The crowd responds with cheers and then, spontaneously, cries of “F*** John Key”. Perhaps it was spontaneous, perhaps it was heartfelt and perhaps it was the sort of thing that a young and excited crowd says when it gets going. But it stopped being just another over-hyped rally when Internet Mana posted the video online and treated it as part of its campaign. It went from being an expression of youthful exuberance to being a political message. In the ensuing debate, even the message was sullied. Internet Party leader Laila Harre defended the expletiveladen video as illustrative of the normal behaviour of young people at many rock concerts. It was “typical” of how young people express their frustration at the situation they find themselves in. Instead of critiquing the expression, people should ask why it was made. Perhaps they should but, equally, perhaps they should first ask young people whether their attitude to politics is ably summed up by swearing at the Prime Minister. If it is, then the politicians have some work to do. If it is not, then calling the chant evidence of engagement, from an age group that is among those least likely to vote, is patronising. Patronising or not, the assumption is given life by the unexpected fact that some real people displayed real emotion about something political. It might be that the chant shows people want to be engaged. Politicians just need to do it in a language everyone can understand.

YOUR VIEW Crime, drugs link I hope our council reads the article by Erin Tasker on page three in today’s paper (Thursday), here is proof, if we didn’t have it before, that the sale of illegal drugs causes more crime So it is logical to say so-called legal high shopowners are adding to the crime scene, therefore if police catch someone breaking into a car or house to steal so they can feed their addiction should they not also arrest the source as the source is the real problem. You are now reviewing the local approved products policy so please council don’t bury your head in the sand by making it 50 metres from a school etc. You might as well allow it in the school grounds, let’s go 2000 metres. You may think that’s way over the top, but anything less you will also be guilty of adding to the crime in Ashburton. George Rendall (edited)

e recently had an Australian couch surfer came to stay on our lounge suite. He came for the snow and a small taste of the rural, but in light of the gale-force winds he was starved of the former and gorged at a buffet of smalltown New Zealand until he was full to bursting. First up, we took him for a pint at The Blue. On a Wednesday night, the pub was not its usual bustling self, but we assured our guest that on special occasions, like the speed shearing competition, both our local landmarks pack out. The mention of sheep shearing was innocent enough, but apparently the trend has yet to hit the hip new nightclubs of Brisbane. Eyebrows were raised. The next day I sent him off for a wander through the town, marking such highlights as The Garden of Harmony and the ploughing sculpture on a map. They were nice enough, but it was the sheep in our neighbour’s garden that had him

raving. “It’s a pet,” I explained, “until it becomes dinner.” Living in an apartment 12 stories up, a hamster was the best our visitor could manage back home and his hamster was definitely not named “snack”. Next it was time to get outdoors for a stretch and some scenery with a gradient. On our hike up Awa Awa Rata our Aussie was initially cautious as I strode ahead. “Back home you’d definitely be on the look out for snakes in this terrain,” he told me.

The wasps of summer were nowhere to be seen and the dearth of venomous creepy crawlies made all manner of cross-country manoeuvres possible. He started to relax. “I could get used to this,” he told me as we descended towards the carpark. Then, as we drove past paddocks of livestock and over the RDR, he snapped a few photos and offered to make dinner. Post-meal, when I asked our Aussie about his impressions of

Mid Canterbury, he went quiet for a moment before offering his response: “I never thought that all the sheep clichés were true before I came here.” In light of his reply, I’m not quite sure what to make of the fact that he cooked us a lamb curry for dinner that evening. The next day our guest departed Methven, bound for Queenstown, culture, and the slopes of the south. Or so he thought. What he’ll make of the Shrek museum in Tarras is anyone’s guess...

The Christian Church is not dying out H ow do we see the Church? Unfortunately it is more often than not presented by the media as a dying institution with elderly, dwindling, congregations filling only a few seats. Consider this, if going by the last census figures that 60 per cent (18,624) of the population of the Ashburton District indicate they are Christian what do the churches really look like here on a Sunday? Going on my own experience and after speaking to other local clergy I hear a very different story to that portrayed above, six of those spoken to have growing congregations varying from a few to over 100. Within in the district we also have vibrant Pacific Island and Filipino church groups that are Malcolm Campbell CHRISTIAN COMMENT

also growing. This growth is not only from Christians moving to the district, but from new converts to the Christian faith. Although the overall number of people in New Zealand who ticked the box as Christians fell to 44.5 per cent those who do so today are not so much the nominal Christian of years passed but are those with a faith-based commitment. What of the Christianity worldwide – 32.9 per cent or 2.2-plus billion people of the world’s population are Christian.

At the end of the 19th century, the southern portion of Africa was only 3 per cent Christian. Today, 63 per cent of the population is Christian, while membership in the churches in Africa is increasing by 34,000 people per day. In India, 14 million of the 140 million members of the “untouchable” caste have become Christians. More people in the Islamic world have come to Christ in the past 25 years than in the entire history of Christian missions. The percentage of Christians in Indonesia is now so high (around 15 per cent) that the Muslim government will no longer print statistics. In China, it is estimated that

there are now more self-avowed disciples of Jesus than members of the Communist party. Even the most conservative estimates suggest that China will soon have more Christians than any country. Across the planet, followers of Jesus are increasing from new convert growth by more than 80,000 per day, 510 new churches form every day and, according to The Economist, 100 million Bibles are sold or given away each year. Jesus said: “I will build my Church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Today the Christian community is alive and growing, not only locally but globally.
