Oil on canvas, signed lower right A noted painter of the nude feminine form, pupil of Gerome, Gabriel Guay and Maignan; exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1894, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1902; appointed to the LĂŠgion dâhonneur in 1931; member and jurist of the Committee of French Artists. Literature; Benezit, Librairie Grund, Paris 1976. Oil on canvas, depicting the bombardment of the town of Montereau, some 30 miles from Paris, held by Austrian troops under the command of Frederick 1st of WĂźrttemberg, on the 18th February 1814. This action followed the Six Day Campaign of 10-15th February, in which Napoleon smashed Allied attempts to take Paris, and routed the Austrian forces, who lost six thousand men in the engagement.
