JOURNEYSFESTIVAL.COM @JOURNEYSFEST #JOURNEYSMCR EXPLORING REFUGEE EXPERIENCES THROUGH GREAT ART

JOURNEYS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL Journeys Festival International is an annual arts festival that takes place across the city of Manchester. The Festival curates, presents and commissions a varied programme of work created by artists who have lived experience of forced migration, and that explores the refugee experience through artistic and creative encounters. Now in its fourth year, the 2019 programme includes an inspiring and stimulating mix of live music, visual and digital art exhibitions, interactive installations, discussions and workshops. ArtReach produces and develops Journeys Festival International in collaboration with extraordinary artists, community groups, charities, arts organisations, volunteers and partners. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who makes the Festival possible.

PERFORMANCE // THEATRE 2, HOME 2 TONY WILSON PLACE MANCHESTER M15 4FN

PIZZA SHOP HEROES Presented by HOME, Journeys Festival International & Phosphoros Theatre Created by one of the UK’s leading refugee theatre companies and starring four young men who made the dangerous journey to the UK on their own as children from Afghanistan, Eritrea and Albania. They have told their ‘stories’ repeatedly to the Home Office as part of seeking asylum and it is the desire to reclaim them that grounds Phosphoros Theatre’s innovative work. From a pizza shop we embark on a journey across continents to explore how they got here, where they’re going and what they’ve learnt along the way. Powerful, celebratory, affirming; this is theatre that puts refugees centre-stage.

THE SKINNY (5 STARS) ‘Luminous’ LYN GARDNER ‘Engagingly exuberant...enormously reflective... the lived experience of the performers shines through’ Tickets are £12.50. Concessions available www.homemcr.org/pizza-shop-heroes or call 0161 200 1500

ANGELS by Laurence Payot (France/UK) and Parang Khezri (Iran/UK)

VISUAL//DIGITAL ARTS

Angels celebrates the courage and optimism of displaced people: from childhood lullabies remembered from another country, to the things that make them happy in their new homes. Participants from across the UK have created a series of visual and audio portraits reminding us all how we can cope with difficult situations and find strength in the things that comfort us. Angels is a series of video portraits projected around the city, talking to us, taking us by surprise, in the most unexpected places. AN ARTREACH COMMISSION

VISUAL//DIGITAL ARTS THE CHANNEL

by Isobel Tarr (UK) The Channel is an installation that enables you to communicate across borders. For nine days, people in Manchester will be able to connect with people indefinitely detained in UK immigration removal centres via the sculpture, which resembles an old fashioned phone box. You are invited to listen to messages from real people in these centres and join the conversation by adding your own voice to the artwork. The workshops offered in the space give us the chance to ask how we can break down borders together in our communities. These ‘exchange’ times will be delivered in collaboration with local community groups actively engaged in campaigning to end detention in the UK. #thesewallsmustfall Open for listening every day 10.00am – 5.00pm Open for ‘exchange’ and conversation with the artist and community groups 5, 6 and 13 October, 12.00pm – 3.00pm at People’s History Museum. 12 October, 12.00pm – 5.00pm at Cathedral Gardens as part of Journeys Live.

THIS GARDEN OF OURS

by Jessica El Mal (UK)

Friday 4 October – Friday 1 November 10.00am – 5.00pm Daily Green House, Third Floor Manchester Museum Oxford Road, M13 9PL FREE

A collaborative art project researching global horticulture, This Garden of Ours explores stories and links between the migration of plants and humans across the planet. Using a range of techniques, artists have added their own stories to the histories of the plants. The installation is made from handmade pottery, self-portrait photography and other interpretations, which create a garden of Eden that we all desire. With a celebratory opening event, talks, an opportunity to meet the artists and family activities, there are lots of ways you can find out more. This garden is ours. Welcome. Project led by Jessica El Mal working with Alina, Raheeda, Shamin, Zeeshan, Raqia, Andrea, Helen, Myriam, Samieh, Alsa, Leila, Hoori, Zari, Azar, Rehana, Marc, Jila, Angie, Annabelle, Cyril, Afsun, Zahida and Fariborz. Join us to celebrate the launch with food, music and discussion on Thursday 10 October, 6.00pm – 8.30pm.

COMMON DAISIES Wednesday 9 October 2.00pm – 3.00pm The Portico Library, 57 Mosley St, M2 3HY Daisies are the most common – and arguably the most liked – weed in England, found in every nook and cranny, featured in children’s games and nursery rhymes dating back centuries. Does finding out that they are not actually native to the UK change your opinion of them? Join Jess and participants who helped create the work to explore this and other themes from The Portico Library’s exhibition Second Nature, which considers how our concept of ‘nature’ influences our psychological and political relationships with the environment.

In a fast-paced technological world of DMs and videocalls, the ways we communicate are constantly evolving. Letters are a way to document and archive our own existence. Poet Mandla Rae invites people from an asylum-seeking background to write and perform Letters to our Mothers and Fathers, to explore the ways we interact with our families. What are the things we don’t say and why? What are the effects of culture and tradition in communicating with our elders? This series of workshops will end in two intimate performances for audiences to enjoy. Saturday 5 October, 12.00pm – 2.30pm Longsight Library Join Mandla Rae for a workshop to help you write your own letter. An exhibition of the letters will be on display at Longsight Library from 27 September – 1 November.

VISUAL//DIGITAL ARTS

We are proud to present two exhibitions of work commissioned and distributed by PositiveNegatives who produce comics, animations and podcasts about contemporary social and humanitarian issues, including conflict, racism, migration and asylum. www.positivenegatives.org.

FLEEING INTO THE UNKNOWN A Journey from Eritrea to England was published by The Huffington Post in February 2016 and was kindly funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. This comic illustrates the journey of Merha, who escapes the extreme hardship of conscription in Eritrea and crosses Africa and Europe to reach safety in the UK.

A PERILOUS JOURNEY A trilogy of comics based on testimonies taken from Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Scandinavia in July 2015. The three Syrians in the story (names changed for their protection) have now thankfully been given asylum. The comics were serialised in The Guardian and Aftenposten (11-13 November 2015) and an exhibition at the Nobel Peace Centre, Oslo (12 November 2015). The project was generously funded by Norwegian People’s Aid.

Fleeing into the Unknown was launched alongside an Overseas Development Institute (ODI) policy report, Journeys to Europe: the role of policy in migrant decision-making. Illustration by Gabi Froden.
