2012-13 ARMY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL about the patriot league In October of 1982, Dr. Peter Likins, then-president of Lehigh University, shared a vision he had with several of his colleagues. That dream became a reality two years later when the Colonial League was established. The league, formally organized in 1984, was founded on the principles of maintaining teams of athletes whose academic ability and progress are representative of the entire student body, the awarding of athletic scholarships on the basis of need, and holding institutional presidents directly responsible for governance and policies. Founding members of the league included Bucknell University, Colgate University, Davidson University, the College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College and Lehigh University. Fordham University ultimately replaced Davidson after three years of football competition. Originally formed as a football-playing league, the Colonial League began formal competition in 1986 and was renamed the Patriot League in December 1989. It was at the beginning of the 1990-91 academic year that the Patriot League began competition in 23 sports, including football. Just prior to that year, the United States Military Academy joined the league. The United States Naval Academy followed for the 1991-92 season to boost league membership to eight. During the summer of 2001, American University formally joined the Patriot League in all sports and began competition that fall. In its second decade of competition, the league now includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. Alan W. Childs, Dean of Academic Services at Lafayette College, was selected as the league’s first executive director in 1986. Dr. Childs helped bring the league to its feet by setting a strong foundation and adhering to the principles outlined by Likins and the other league presidents. Former Army athletic director Carl Ullrich, who was inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame in September of 2007, was named the league’s first full-time executive director in May 1989. For one year, he served in a dual capacity as Army athletic director and Patriot League director. He retired from West Point in the summer of 1990 and served the league fulltime until retiring in the summer of 1993. Connie Hurlbut succeeded Ullrich and became the first woman to be named executive director of a Division I league. Hurlbut oversaw the league’s operation for six seasons until resigning her post in the spring of 1999 to become Director of Operations for the WNBA. Carolyn Schlie Femovich, named to the league’s top post soon after Hurlbutt’s departure, ushered the league into its second decade of all-sports competition in 2001-02 and continues to steer the league via a myriad of regional and national initiatives. The Black Knights have captured the Presidents’ Cup—signifying the league’s all-sports champion—four times, including walking away with the hardware in the spring of 2005 for the first time since 1997. Army’s men have captured nine all-sports championships in the last 17 years, including a streak of six in a row from 1992-93 through 1997-98. Army women’s basketball is 129-151 since the inception of the Patriot League in 1991-92 and won the Patriot League title in 2005-06.
