WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior guard Anna Simmers scored 20 first-half points and finished with a career-high 28 as Army upset visiting Lehigh, 66-64, in Patriot League women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena. Simmers led three Army players in double-figure scoring as the Black Knights notched their fourth league win and moved into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings. The Black Knights entered the locker room with a 42-26 halftime lead only to watch it evaporate over the opening four minutes of the second half. Lehigh tied the game at 58-all with 5:11 to play, but Army managed to maintain the lead the rest of the way and escape yet another close decision. Sophomore guard Jen Hazlett and freshman forward Olivia Schretzman amassed 17 and 16 points respectively. The pair combined for 15 rebounds on the afternoon, led by Hazlett’s eight caroms to go with a game-high four assists. Army snapped a two-game skid and improved to 10-12 on the season and 4-3 in league play. The Black Knights sit in a tie with Holy Cross and Navy for third place at the midway point of the conference season. The Black Knights handed Lehigh its first loss in four games and dropped the Mountain Hawks to 12-9 overall and 5-2 in Patriot League play. Lehigh still sits in second place, two games behind American (7-0). Lehigh opened a 4-0 lead over the first two minutes of the game before Hazlett drilled her first three of the game at the 17:56 mark to make it 4-3 in favor of the Mountain Hawks. Simmers followed with a midrange jumper 30 seconds later to give the Black Knights third first lead of the game, 5-4. The teams continued to battle within four points of one another over the next nine minutes, all the while Army holding the lead. Lehigh pulled within a single point four times, but each time Army was able to maintain the lead. The Mountain Hawks finally got over the hump and retook the lead, 24-23, on a Kelly Peterson three-pointer with 8:24 on the clock. Sophomore Molly Yardley wasted no time putting Army back on top, draining her only three points of the game on Army’s next possession to give the Black Knights the lead for good, 26-24. Army rode Simmers’ hot hand for the rest of the way, closing the half on a 19-2 run over the final eight minutes. Army’s defense held Lehigh scoreless over the last 4:47 of the half, while Simmers scored the final 10 points and helped Army to a 4226 halftime lead. Simmers exploded for 20 first-half points, while Hazlett tallied 11 points over the first 20 minutes. Lehigh scored 17 of the opening 21 points of the second half, making it a one-possession game, 46-43, four minutes into the second frame. Schretzman stopped the bleeding with her first collegiate three-point bucket at the 14:45 mark and putting Army in front 49-43. Schretzman’s triple got her team moving on the offensive end, and she bookended a10-4 Army run with three points the old fashioned way with 11:48 remaining. Simmers scored four points during the stretch as well, helping Army to a 56-47 lead. Lehigh refused to go away and scored the next seven points unanswered, pulling within 56-54 with 9:48 to play. The Mountain Hawks continued to chip away and tied the game, 58-58, for the first time since the 16:43 mark of the first half. Schretzman, Simmers and Hazlett each followed with layups during a 6-0 Army run. The timely stretch put the Black Knights back on top, 64-58, and prompted a Lehigh timeout with 3:24 remaining in the contest. Simmers’ baseline layup at 1:45 gave Army a 66-60 cushion, but the Mountain Hawks quickly cut the deficit to four points following a pair of Alexa Williams free throws with 1:21 to go. While Simmers’ layin at 1:45 marked the Black Knights’ final points of the afternoon, Lehigh continued to push forward. A pair of Katie O’Reilly free throws with 41 seconds to go trimmed the deficit to 66-64 and put the ball back in Army’s hands. Hazlett’s jumper at the 22-second mark rimmed out, but senior co-captain Kait Goodall saved the rebound out of bounds to keep possession for the Black Knights. While Army could not make good on a one-and-one opportunity with 15 seconds left, the defense kept Lehigh off the board in the final seconds. Lehigh senior Aly Byorick’s three-point attempt was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

EASTON, Pa. - Junior Anna Simmers led all players with 20 points and sophomore Jen Hazlett added 17 as the Army women’s basketball team picked up a 62-47 Patriot League win over Lafayette on Wednesday night at Kirby Sports Center. The Black Knights scored the final eight points of the game - all from the free throw line - to seal their sixth league win. Navy defeated Holy Cross on the road, while American handled Lehigh at home, moving Army into a three-way tie with Lehigh and Navy for second place in the Patriot League standings with identical 6-3 marks. The Black Knights battle Navy for the “Star” this Saturday, Feb. 11, at Christl Arena. Army out-rebounded Lafayette 44-38, as Hazlett led all players with 11 rebounds en route to her fifth double-double of the season. While Simmers and Hazlett combined for more than half of Army’s points, Olivia Schretzman, Jessica Waggoner and Liz Benedict finished with five points apiece. The teams entered halftime tied, 30-30, but Army locked-down defensively in the second half to out-score Lafayette 32-17. The Black Knights finished the game 23-of-27 from the free throw line. Army’s defense held Lafayette’s Danielle Fiacco, the league’s tallest player standing 6-8, to three points and two rebounds on the night. Fiacco scored all three points from the free throw line. Simmers scored Army’s first six points of the game, while the Black Knights opened up an 11-4 lead and forced Lafayette to burn its first timeout of the contest at the 15:25 mark. Hazlett buried the first three-pointer of the game from the right wing during Army’s opening spurt. The Leopards countered with a quick 5-0 run to inch within 11-9 just over a minute later. Hazlett heated up from long range from there as she scored Army’s next eight points - including consecutive three-pointers - to stay on top, 18-12, with 11:24 remaining. The Black Knights went on to take a 28-19 lead on a Benedict three-pointer from the left wing (7:00), but that would be Army’s final field goal of the half. A pair of Hazlett free throws with 4:27 to play marked Army’s lone points the rest of the way, while Lafayette used an 11-2 run to close the half. The teams entered the locker room tied, 30-30. After sitting the final 13 minutes of the first half due to foul trouble, Simmers picked up right where she left off and scored Army’s first four points of the second half. The Black Knights netted eight of the first 10 points of the second half and stretched their lead to 38-32 after a Molly Yardley layup at the 13:35 mark. Lafayette pulled within 40-36 midway through the action before Army scored the next six points unanswered on Hazlett’s baseline triple (9:22) and Schretman’s traditional three-point play (8:55) as the Black Knights extended their lead to double digits, 46-36. Lafayette cut the lead to eight, but Simmers’ three-pointer from the right wing with 5:22 to go gave Army its largest lead of the night, 51-38. The Leopards continued to keep things close down the stretch, pulling within 54-47 with 2:25 remaining. That would be Lafayette’s final bucket of the game. The Black Knights relied on an 8-of-8 effort from the free throw line over the final two minutes to seal the victory. Game Notes: Army extended its win streak to three games ... the Black Knights wore specially designed Nike road black uniforms with pink ACU (Army Combat Uniform) insets in honor of breast cancer awareness month ... Anna Simmers picked up her second foul less than seven minutes into the game and did not play the rest of the first half ... Army entered halftime tied with its opponent for the first time this season.

Game Notes: Saturday’s win was head coach Dave Magarity’s 95th victory at Army ... Anna Simmers reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season ... Army’s 42 first-half points were the most the team has scored in either half all season ... Olivia Schretzman’s 16 points were the most she has scored a Patriot League game this year.
