WINTER 13/14

arenanews It’s strange to think back to the beginning of 2013 when there was concern across the industry that it may be a quiet year. Following the Olympics, expectations for the year ahead were low, but it seems that we were mistaken!

2013 saw an upturn in events as the UK capitalised on the excitement the games had left behind and strived to continue to push creative boundaries. For us as a group, 2013 was one of the most significant in our history; we made two major acquisitions, Karls Event Services in the USA (now Arena Americas) and Asia Tents International in Malaysia (now Asia Tents Arena). We also opened our first office in Saudi Arabia, servicing the burgeoning market there. In the UK, our global headquarters moved to Newman Street just off Oxford Street and we expanded our ice rink division. The exciting decision was made to sponsor the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We are proud to announce we are an Official Overlay and Temporary Structures Provider and the Exclusive Official Temporary Seating Provider. We’ll also be providing exhibition services across all venues. This will see us provide every single seat across all 14 venues as well as creating stunning corporate hospitality structures. There have even been some world records with the longest conga on ice and the world’s largest tented structure. And that’s just for starters. With new client wins and contract announcements (page 9) plus exciting new products about to be launched (page 12) 2014 is set to be one of our best years yet. Finally, I would like to say thank you to all of our customers for their support over the past twelve months, and more. We look forward to working with you in 2014, continuing to innovate and re-define event infrastructure. Grahame Muir, CEO Arena UK & Europe

ASHES FEVER AT DURHAM COUNTY CRICKET CLUB Arena Group demonstrated how its temporary seating products can be used as a cost-effective permanent solution; installing 5,000 grandstand seats into Durham County Cricket Club for the fourth Test Match of the 2013 Ashes. The group was contracted to install 5,178 seats of its patented clearview™ product, increasing the club’s capacity to 15,500. The system is permanently installed and supplemented with compatible Arena Seating rental stock during large-capacity events. The first event saw an additional 2,000 added. Durham CCC chief operating officer Richard Dowson, said: “We’ve worked with Arena Group since 1999. So for us, they were the obvious choice. We have a very strong working relationship and the clearview™ product offers the ultimate in customer experience.”

NOT JUST A TEMPORARY SOLUTION There are many reasons why sports clubs need to expand their capacities, but there are also many reasons why it can be daunting. Dave Withey, sales and marketing director Arena UK & Europe, explains how demountable seating could prove to be a flexible, cost-effective permanent solution. “Maybe your club’s been promoted and you’re suddenly expecting thousands more fans, or maybe you’re simply looking to improve or add to existing facilities. The first thing that springs to mind is permanent construction, but this can be a long winded, costly solution which offers minimal flexibility. “This year our focus has been on working with sporting venues to demonstrate the options available to those looking to expand, but avoid these issues. At the same time making the stadium as flexible as possible in capacity and usage. “Raising awareness of new innovations has been vital to this. Helping clients understand what can be achieved within

EARLS COURT TRANSFORMED Arena Seating installed over 8,000 seats into Earls Court 1 for the Nitro Circus Live spectacular, then in just three days reconfigured the grandstands along with introducing Royal and sponsors’ VIP boxes for the British Military Tournament. Arena’s project director Martin Clark explains: “Earls Court contracted us to install the tiered seating for Nitro Circus Live, incorporating a giant bike ramp into one of the grandstands. “This initial installation was (relatively) straightforward. IMG then took residence to

transform the venue for the British Military Tournament. Having worked with event director Nick Mattingley in previous years we had a good understanding of the challenges. “We constructed the Royal box and sponsors’ boxes, for Boeing and Focus 21, on level 2, with full fit-out including luxury ornate chairs. The bridge control, wheelchair, follow spot and highly-engineered orchestral platforms meant that this was a particularly complex, time sensitive installation.”

their budget and time scales, which are often very tight. “Our clearview™ system was initially developed as a temporary product but we always saw the potential for it to be used as a permanent solution; it’s durable, offers optimum comfort and can be installed incredibly quickly compared with traditional construction. “This vision has now become reality with projects such as Durham County Cricket Club and Saracens Rugby Club. These stands are in location permanently and supplemented by rental products for bigger games and in the case of Saracens removed to allow athletic events on the running track in the summer months. “I feel we have demonstrated a new, economically-viable refurbishment and extension model for venues of all sizes, and predict high growth in this area. We also have a range of even quicker to install solutions for smaller clubs such as our LT Grandstands range.”

SKATERS FOR LONGEST CONGA ON ICE

ARENA GROUP INSTALLS ICE RINKS ACROSS THE UK Winter 2013 saw Arena Group extend its ice rink division with several new installations, helping retail and leisure clients diversify their businesses and capitalise on the additional festive footfall. Arena Structures business development director James Thomas and project manager Rebecca Owen built on the group’s portfolio of existing clients, as Arena installed more garden centre ice rinks across the country and brand new city centre ice rinks in Birmingham, Bristol and London. In London, the group was instrumental in delivering some of the city’s best loved rinks, in prestigious locations including Broadgate Exchange Square, Natural History Museum and Canary Wharf, which became home to a Guinness World Record when 353 skaters broke the world record for the longest conga on ice in aid of BBC Children In Need. James Thomas, comments: “Arena Group’s ice rink service covers every element from the structures, the real ice, skating aids, and training for staff on how to maintain and keep the rinks in top condition.”

INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE AT ICE RINK CANARY WHARF Ice Rink Canary Wharf showcased Arena Group’s interior design service, with a stunning hospitality venue being created inside an Arena structure for the hugely-popular rink-side ‘Juke Box Bar’. The bar was once again hosted by Boisdale, which also has several permanent restaurants across London. Arena Group’s Spaceworks Interiors & Furniture Hire and Well Dressed Tables were tasked with creating a spacious, yet warm and comforting environment for patrons to enjoy 1950s American-style food and a selection of the finest beverages. The full interior fit out included linings, walling, carpeting, heating and a selection of furniture and tableware, carefully chosen to match the slick red and black colour scheme. Spaceworks and Well Dressed Tables worked closely with the restaurant and event organisers, lending its expertise on spacial design, layout and theming, creating a spectacular interior environment.

CROWDS VISIT ‘OUR HOUSE’ AT V FESTIVAL As a main sponsor of V Festival, Virgin Media wanted to offer its customers a unique warehouse-style party at V’s North and South sites. Working with experiential agency ITCH, Arena Group created the Virgin Media ‘Our House’ temporary venue. The design-led 15m x 20m two-storey structure was wrapped in a faux brickwork skin displaying Virgin

Media logos and details of the music line-up and was adapted to incorporate an industrial interior theme. Steve Unterburger, senior production manager at ITCH said: “The double decker clearspan structure that Arena supplied was perfect. It allowed us the flexibility to adapt the layout to suit our needs, and keep the intimacy we needed to create a memorable moment for festival goers who visited Our House.”

HOMECOMING AT HORSE GUARDS FOR WORLD WAR Z FILM PREMIERE Arena Group was back at Horse Guards Parade to provide VIP structures for a one-off performance by rock band Muse as part of the world premiere of Brad Pitt’s World War Z movie. Over 15,000 fans and a star studded guest list gathered at the iconic Whitehall grounds, marking Arena’s homecoming to the site following 2012’s Olympic Beach Volleyball. A three-tiered bespoke VIP area was created to house stars including Brad Pitt himself. Martin Clark, Arena Group’s project director, said: “There was a very tight build time for this event, with access only allowed at 1pm the day before and a noise curfew at 6pm. Our extensive knowledge of the site and understanding of the sensitivities of the area allowed us to meet these logistical challenges.”

DRIVING INTO NEW TERRITORIES WITH THE PGA EUROPEAN TOUR The Volvo World Match Play Championship saw the PGA European Tour head to Bulgaria for the first time. Working with IMG, Arena Group’s challenge was to provide a temporary clubhouse facility in this brand new location. The vast double deck structure spanning 20m x 45m included a 3m set-back veranda creating a covered spectator platform complete with decking, overlooking the picturesque backdrop of the Thracian Cliffs golf course. The clubhouse incorporated extensive facilities including a full media centre where Arena Group installed 55 of its new modular plug in and play desks, the first time this type of design has been installed in a temporary structure. Arena Group is contracted by IMG for golf events in the UK, Middle East, Asia and the USA.

ARCUS TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE AT RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW As part of a new three year contract to provide hospitality structures at Chelsea Flower Show, 2013’s show saw the introduction of a brand new design using Arena’s flagship Arcus structure. Project manager Dan Bluff said: “In past years we have supplied two separate structures, whereas this year to maximize space we joined them using a 20m x 8m mezzanine level with a tunnel underneath. This allowed the kitchen to be moved above the tunnel creating more room for the hospitality areas and allowing the restaurants to increase covers.” The M&G structure included a custom decking area and cantilever balcony, giving patrons a choice of premium viewing areas to enjoy the show. Across the site Well Dressed Tables and Spaceworks provided crockery, cutlery and glassware to Sodexo Prestige areas.

ROYAL PERFORMANCE AT QUEEN’S CORONATION FESTIVAL Arena Group was entrusted to supply the Royal box, audience seating and stage platform for the Queen’s 60th coronation celebrations, which included a star-studded evening concert.

Arena Diplomat seats behind 10 luxury Arena upholstered Congress seats. Over 6,501 Samsonite flat chairs were carefully configured to client Media 10’s seating plan.

The spectacular 50m arched performance stage located on the rear terrace of the palace, utilised 600m² of Arena Group’s new Arena Deck platform and staging system. Her Majesty was joined by family and VIP guests in the Royal Box; constructed using a 150m² canopy with 60 tiered

Dave Withey, sales and marketing director, Arena UK & Europe, said: “We have a long history of working on royal events, providing much of the infrastructure for the Queen’s original coronation in 1953 and Diamond Jubilee in 2012.”

The semi-permanent ‘Vital Venue’ structure hosted flagship music, sporting and cultural events throughout 2013 as Derry-Londonderry was awarded the status of the UK’s inaugural ‘City of Culture’. Senior project manager Mark Shelley led the Arena Structures team that installed the Tensioned Fabric Structure (TFS). The TFS incorporated significant developments in technical and design qualities, particularly in the areas of acoustics, insulation and rigging capabilities. Over 3,000 flat and tiered seats were designed for fast change around between seated and standing shows.

CREATING THE VITAL VENUE FOR CITY OF CULTURE CELEBRATIONS

Graeme Farrow, executive programmer at the Culture Company, explained: “The Vital Venue is a key part of the attraction for visitors for putting City of Culture Derry-Londonderry on the map. It allowed us to offer promoters a capacity that no other venue in the region could accommodate.”

SEMI-PERMANENT ENTERTAINMENT VENUES Thanks to technological advances in temporary structures, large-scale entertainment venues have become more accessible for event organisers looking to create the ‘wow’ factor. Simon Marsh, sales director at Arena Structures, explains: “Tensioned Fabric Structures (TFS) have opened up a realm of possibilities for event organisers who need a venue which straddles the gap between permanent and temporary. “A TFS delivers the feel of a permanent facility but offers the versatility and functionality of a temporary venue, alleviating concerns around complicated planning permission and the worry that you may end up with a ‘white elephant’ after the event.

“We’ve seen an increase in requests for these types of structures, installing a 10,000 capacity TFS for the City of Culture in Derry-Londonderry which was used as a concert venue for 12 months, a temporary theatre in Saudi Arabia and also the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre (MFCC). “For cities and events that need a longer-term temporary solution, or for venues under going refurbishment that want to continue with day-to-day business, this is a very cost effective option and we can work with you to ensure every element from size and scale to interior fit out is tailored precisely to your needs.” WEMBLEY TFS

TRIPLE DECK HOSPITALITY AT:

ATP WORLD TOUR FINALS

Back at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the fifth year, Arena Group provided over 9,000m2 of temporary overlay including a brand new triple decker hospitality structure for the Sponsor Hospitality Village. The company continued its long-term relationship with organisers ATP, transforming the O2 in London ahead of the tournament, which saw Novak Djokovic triumph over Rafael Nadal in the final to retain his title for a second consecutive year. In line with the organisers’ ambition to create a warmer practice court for players and a more exclusive viewing environment for sponsors, Arena Group worked closely with the ATP’s production and sponsor hospitality teams to design and install a bespoke 15m x 35m triple deck hospitality structure with contemporary interiors from Spaceworks Furniture Hire, overlooking the players’ practice court. The triple-decker was carefully engineered to fit seamlessly against a 40m x 20m Tensioned Fabric Structure (TFS) housing the court, giving guests exclusive views of the action.

Elsewhere in the O2, Arena Group supplied extensive temporary overlay including structures for the Racquet Club Hospitality Lounge, media centre, tennis family and player restaurants, offices and VIP accreditation. An additional 40m x 50m TFS located within the event’s Fan Zone incorporated two further practice courts – open to the public – with 500 tiered seats supplied by Arena Seating. Within the O2’s main arena, Arena Seating project managed the installation of custom-designed broadcast studios and camera platforms for international broadcasters including BBC and Sky Sports built across the O2’s permanent tiered seating. Lottie Cresswell, head of event operations for Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, commented: “The 2013 Sponsor Village has been a huge success. The central aim to provide a warmer practice court environment for the players was always at the heart of the redesign and working together with the ATP and Arena Group we have created an exclusive experience complimented extensively throughout the week by players, sponsors, fans and the wider tennis community.”

MILES AHEAD AT WORLD TRIATHLON FINAL Using an identical course and location in Hyde Park as the London Olympic Games, the 2013 PruHealth World Triathlon Series Grand Final welcomed 5,000 athletes from 86 countries to compete for world championship titles. Charged with emulating the memorable spectator experience from the Olympics, Arena Group’s project manager Rebecca Owen led the team to create the vision of the International Triathlon Union (ITU). This required extensive temporary event infrastructure consisting of 20 structures across the site, ranging in size from the smaller peaked roof Milano marquees to the group’s flagship curved-roof Arcus structure complete with 55m roof branding. Arena Seating created a clearview™ spectator grandstand on the finish line, which required a bespoke installation of 86 flagpoles to fly national flags from each country, spanning the length of the VIP structure, grandstand seating and disabled viewing platforms utilising the all new Arena Deck system.

LIVE NATION EVENTS IN QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK The clearview™ seating system was installed at Hard Rock Calling and Wireless Festival, following the Live Nation events to their new location in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Located stage right and positioned behind the main crowds, the team installed a custom build clearview™ VIP grandstand consisting of 726 tiered seats. Arena Deck was used at the front to create a platform for a further 200 wheelchair users, with glass handrails to optimise sightlines. Project director Martin Clark said: “This was the first time we have created a clearview™ seating grandstand with integrated access and space for wheelchair users. It’s great to be working with Live Nation once again on this fantastic run of events.”

PLAIN SAILING AT THE EXTREME SAILING WORLD SERIES The award-winning and adrenaline-fuelled Extreme Sailing Series Act 6 was hosted at Cardiff Bay, attracting some of the best professional sailors in the world with eight international teams competing. Arena Group offered the ultimate viewing experience for sailors, VIPs and guests. Its 15m x 30m double deck hospitality structure incorporated VIP bar, media centre and merchandise area. It included a covered spectator platform complete with decking, overlooking the start and finish line. Project manager Simon Marsh said: “One of the biggest challenges to overcome was installing the structure on a sloped edge by the water. Given the slope and high winds buffeting the structure, it was essential we were thorough in our structural calculations to ensure a robust scaffolding substructure and plenty of ballast to stop any forward movements.”
