Marketing committee introduces new athletic ‘H’

fter months of discussion, constiuent input, student designs and market testing a new Hoban “H” was introduced to the students in early April. The process began in January 2011 with the marketing committee’s desire to produce a new school style guide to

ensure consistent use of all Archbishop Hoban intellectual property. In September 2011, the committee, spearheaded by Hank Inman, began the process of developing a new “H” athletic logo using guidance from professionals and market research. The intent was to set Hoban apart

from other local schools which use a standard “block H”, with only the primary color being the differentiator. It was also an “H” that didn’t have a distinctive font, so often it was not a true “block H.” During the spring of 2012, the committee presented progress to a group of Hoban stakeholders, so as not to make a change “in a vacuum”. In May students were invited to participate in the design process and review graphic renderings. With these student designs, the committee enlisted the services of the graphic design company used by Hoban alumnus Dave Sutter ’79, president of Excelsior Marking. The design was refined, reviewed and selected for final rendering, approved by the board, trademark attorneys and tested with students. “The new ‘H’ is distinctive and has the unique characteristic of our Knight Head,” said Jake Frego, chairman of the marketing committee. “It is a melding of our primary athletic mark with our letter mark.” The knight helmet logo was designed by John Hanchulak in 2005 and has been used as the primary athletic mark on Hoban apparel since. “With the white letter logo reversing out of a dark background and housed within a geometric shape, it taps into a design discipline that has been used by

other iconic brands,” Sutter said. The “H” was introduced to the students via a video created by senior Mario Micali and T-shirts were given to all faculty, staff and students. A new Hoban styleguide will be available to the public through the Hoban store. n
