Aquinas College had its origins in the Novitiate Normal School begun by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids in 1886 in Traverse City. The Novitiate Normal School was transferred to Grand Rapids in 1911, and in 1922 it evolved into Sacred Heart (later Marywood) College. In 1931, the College was renamed Catholic Junior College. In 1940 the two-year program at CJC was expanded into a four-year bachelor's degree program and the name of the College was changed to Aquinas College. Aquinas College was originally located in downtown Grand Rapids. In 1945, the college bought the former Lowe Estate on East Fulton Street where it has remained until this day. In August 2011, Aquinas College will kick off a year's worth of festivities celebrating its 125 years of Catholic Dominican post-secondary education in Michigan. The celebration of the College's quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) will be highlighted by four signature events that will shine a spotlight on the values that have guided the College throughout its history: prayer, study, service, and community.

After last year’s disappointing season, the 2011-12 Saints have adopted the motto, “Find a Way!” With eight first year players in the program a year ago, 16th year Head Coach Linda Nash new there would be some growing pains. “I am focusing on the present. Last year we took it on the chin. We were young, but I didn’t feel we competed the way we needed to in order to win games or championships.” A familiar face will join Nash on the sideline this season. Assistant coach Ray Fron returns after a three year hiatus from Aquinas College after coaching with Nash for twelve seasons. “Coach Fron brings knowledge, experience and a passion for the system that we run. He was the head coach at NAIA Div. 1 Spring Hill College for three seasons before making the difficult decision to return to the Grand Rapids area wear his family and closest friends reside. He will be a great asset once again to the program”, Nash says with a smile. The Saint’s have made adjustments and the “X” factor that they are banking on has to do with their stringent strength and conditioning program led by
Junior Taelor Sanders Steve Morgan of Maximum Athletic Performance. “I love it...the first day of conditioning Coach Morgan pulled up in his pick-up truck with tractor tires. We spent a lot of time pushing, pulling and flipping them. The team is in very good shape and we are preparing for a marathon season”, says Nash. The Saints return a nucleus of players that logged substantial minutes last season. The Saints will rely on Junior Taelor Sanders, who spent countless hours training this summer. Nash comments, “Taelor is a tremendous athlete. She worked her tail off this summer and it shows. We need Taelor to keep leading with her intensity.” The lone senior on the squad, Anne Marie Shumaker is poised and ready to end her career on a high note. She possesses a deadly shot and has become much more adept at slashing to the basket.

sophomore class is very athletic. All three can shoot the three and they have returned with a year of experience ready to compete at a higher level. They all will be contributors for us.” The Saints added two freshmen that will make an immediate impact on the season. Allison Heberlein, a Lansing Catholic Central grad is steady, a great defender and can shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. Chelsea Matley is lightening quick. Nash says, “Chelsea may very well be the quickest player I have ever coached. She is a defensive terror and she gets so many deflections. She is learning the offensive system and is adjusting very well.” The Saints will compete in the competitive Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and have a strong non-conference season that includes NCAA Division II and III powerhouses Grand Valley State University and Hope College. Coach Linda Nash concludes, “We are focusing on getting better. Our goal is to be the aggressors and we want to come after our opponents. I think we have the depth to stretch the court and cover 94 feet. Time will tell, but we are focused on “Finding a way” to get it done!
Junior Lindsey Karpowicz The trio of juniors in the post, Shelby Carter, Lindsey Karpowicz and Liza Flewelling will give the Saints a strong post presence. All three players contributed last season and with a year of seasoning under their belts they have the ability to dominate inside. The junior class is rounded out by Clare Conway and Alpena Community College transfer Hayley O’Meara. Nash says, “Clare is deceptive. She’s a gamer. She has hit some big shots for us in the past and she has a great understanding of the system. Hayley is a jitter bug out there. She was a big scorer at Alpena and averaged 17 ppg the last two seasons. She can hit the outside shot has the ability to create contact and get to the free throw line. Her experience will pay off for us.” The sophomore class includes Carly Bardwell, Jenna Brower and Marisa Marx. Nash comments, “The

double major in Psychology and Physical Education at Central Michigan University. She was the starting point guard for four years and at the time of her graduation, ranked in the top five in career assists. Nash knew at a young age that she wanted to be a collegiate basketball coach, so the next step was to complete a Master’s Degree in Health and Physical Education, while working with the women’s basketball team at Tennessee Tech University as a graduate assistant coach. Nash comments, “Tennessee Tech had a premier program in the nation when I was a graduate assistant. Cookeville natives came out to our games in groves. I learned from the best in coaching in Marynell Meadors and her assistant coach Bill Worrell (who took over the program and had great success as well). Meadors recently guided the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream to a second place finish in the WNBA championships to the Indianapolis Fever.”
Head Coach Linda Nash, 16th year Head Coach Linda Nash returns for her 16th year at the helm of the Aquinas College women’s basketball program. After a guiding the Saints to four appearances at the NAIA national tournament in the past seven years, last year was a disappointment. Nash comments, “I knew we would have some hurdles to overcome with eight first year players in the program last season, but we didn’t gel the way I wanted us to. I always preach to my team that obstacles make us stronger and hopefully we learned some valuable lessons last year. I think it was the toughest year of my career at Aquinas and I am on a mission to get us back to national prominence. It will require a complete team effort and we need to go out and be the aggressors and take one game at a time. I’m not making any promises, other than our motto of “finding a way” will be in the back of our minds as we take the court. Nash’s love of basketball dates back to her formative growing years where she was a four year AllConference player for local high school Kenowa Hills. She capped her career with All-State honors her junior and senior years and was selected as Kenowa’s athlete of the year and also the athlete of the year in the conference. Nash’s #40 was retired at Kenowa Hills for ten years. After high school, Nash completed her undergraduate education with a
After finishing her Master’s Degree, Nash moved to Houston, TX and was an assistant coach for three years and worked with head coach Linda Tucker at Rice University. “I’m so fortunate to have worked with so many great coaches. When I returned to Grand Rapids, I also had the opportunity to work with legendary coach Patti Tibaldi for a year at Aquinas College.” Nash admits that she can be classified as an unorthodox coach. When I recruit my studentathletes, I am looking for individuals that want to be empowered to grow. I am not a spoon feeder, and although I am always available to help, I want my players to grow into independent thinking adults who realize the difference they can make in the world. “When Aquinas College adopted the tag line, “Makes all the difference in the world”, it fit perfectly with my philosophy. Nash is a familiar face in the Aquinas College service learning department and has accompanied more than ten groups to third world countries. Most recently, Nash visited Haiti last spring, her third trip to the impoverished nation. She comments, “My travels with AQ students has made me realize the potential we have for positive change in the world. The gifts I have received from the people I have met are gifts that I will cherish for a life-time.”

Fron returns to Aquinas College with impressive coaching and teaching experience. He has been coaching basketball for over twenty years, coaching middle school, high school, and the last 16 years at the collegiate level. His passion for the game and his players is evident when you watch Fron on the sidelines. He brings great energy and a positive vibe, yet he balances those characteristics with a no nonsense approach to getting things done the right way.
Assistant Coach Ray Fron, 13th year A familiar face will grace the sidelines this season as long-time assistant coach Ray Fron returns to Aquinas College. Fron and Head Coach Linda Nash spent 12 years guiding the Saints together, before Fron moved south to take a head coaching position at Spring Hill College. After three seasons in Alabama, Fron decided that he missed being in Michigan where his family is and the rest is history.
An undergraduate of Grand Valley State University, Fron completed his Master’s in Education from Aquinas College. He is currently a special education teacher in the Wayland Public School District. Fron comments, “I love to teach and I love working with young people. Coming back to Aquinas College feels like coming home to me. I grew up two blocks from here and I spent quite a lot of time on campus and in the old fieldhouse. The renovated Sturrus Center is amazing and will serve the Aquinas College community well. Coach Nash and I go way back and our friendship is very important to both of us. We are committed to getting this team back to the top of the WHAC and to compete with the best of the teams in the nation.” Coach Fron and his wife Kari are the proud parents of three children, Lauren, Robert (wife Ronda), and Tarah (husband Eric). The Fron’s were blessed with the addition of their first granddaughter Ainsley, whose parents are Robert and Ronda.
Head Coach Linda Nash comments, “It’s not often that I’m lost for words, but the return of Coach Fron is hard for me to put down in words. We worked together for so long that sometimes we even completed one another’s sentences. Coach Fron’s efforts will be invaluable to our program. He is an excellent teacher of the game and we both believe in empowering our players to make decisions and play the game with fluency and toughness. When we implemented the triangle system six year’s ago, we learned it together and took four teams to the NAIA National Championships. It’s nice to be on the same page philosophically and our goal is to work harder than anyone and to have more fun than anyone. It’s a long season and if you lose sight of enjoying what you are doing, it will show as the season continues. Fron’s experience as a head coach has made him even a stronger leader and he has brought some new concepts to our program. We love to sit around and diagram X’s and O’s.”

Exercise Association (IDEA) selected Morgan in 1998 as one of the top twenty fitness professionals in the country. Morgan has worked with various high schools teams throughout Michigan and trains the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Grand Valley State University, the men's basketball national championship team at Mott Community College. He was a strength consultant for two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and worked with the Olympic sports and women's volleyball teams at Michigan State University.
Strength & Conditioning Coach Steve Morgan Strength and Conditioning Coach Steve Morgan is coordinating the training of the Aquinas College women’s basketball team once again. Morgan brings a wealth of knowledge when it comes to sport specific training. Morgan has been working in the health and fitness industry for more than 16 years and joined StrengthEdge Systems LLC in September 2006 as Vice President of Content Development. The Lansing, Mich. native, Morgan played baseball and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Exercise Science. He is the founder and operator of Maximum Athletic Performance in Grand Ledge, Mich., which is the eighth training facility he has helped design. Morgan has also helped build training facilities in Germany, Cyprus, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden, and Pennsylvania. As an educator for Life Fitness International, Morgan has conducted workshops in over 35 countries on topics such as strength conditioning, exercise physiology, and health club management. Morgan was invited by the Chinese government to perform a seminar on health club management in Beijing in 2000. The International Dance and

Nash comments, “There is no one like Steve Morgan. He is the real deal and his creativity in training really challenges our players. I’ll never forget the look on our players faces when he pulled up in his truck for our first strength workout. I think they were expecting to go upstairs in our new weight room, but Morgan had other ideas up his sleeve. He lowered the gate on his truck and there they were...3 large tractor/truck tires, a pair of gardening gloves and 3 huge chains to wrap around the tires. There was an immediate attention to detail as Morgan guided the group through some intense training sessions utilizing the tires. I have no doubt that as the season continues, we will physically be on the strongest teams in the nation. Our training program is second to none and I have so much confidence in Morgan’s ability. He fits is really well in our program.”

I got the chance to talk to some professors, coaches and students on my visit and they all seemed to love it here. I also love how much Aquinas College is into community service and giving back. I picked Aquinas because of the small class sizes and the beautiful campus. I have gone to a catholic school my whole life and I knew I wanted to continue my faith in college. Also being able to play my 2 favorite sports in college was a great bonus. You feel like you can make a difference. On my visit, everyone was very welcoming, especially the girls on the basketball team, so I knew it was a good choice. If you can do that, then you’re perfect.” Friday Night Lights Most inspiring moment: I'd say my most inspiring moment is every time I see my little sister's best friend, Kelleigh. Kelleigh has been fighting a very rare disease since she was born and has gotten a number of treatments and surgeries and even moved out of the state to be closer to her hospitals for treatment. You can see the effects of the disease physically yet she still lives a normal life and lives as if nothing is wrong. Every time I'm around her I see her hanging out with my little sister and smiling all the time. Our families are very close so the distance has been hard, especially on my little sister. Kelleigh’s strength, along with her family's strength, inspires me the most. It inspires me to work harder and to value the most important things in life.

Most inspiring moment in your life: Every year we run a Christmas Fundraiser in Macomb County for the less fortunate. Families have children’s names and a list of things the children are interested in. Those families go out and buy gifts for kids that may not get presents on Christmas. Also, we have boxes of canned food that people drop off. At the end of the night Semi’s take all of the presents, and boxed food to homes that could really need an extra hand! And to me this is very inspiring, I love to help people anyway that I can.

Since the student teacher ratio is very low, much like the junior college I was transferring from, I also knew my transition to Aquinas would go smooth. I felt like this college would be a great fit for me as a student, person, and athlete. We found out that my Grandma O’Meara had a mass tumor on her lungs. The doctors gave her 2 months to live because the cancer was growing so rapidly. My grandma had the strongest faith I have ever seen in any person and she fought off a lot of sicknesses prior to getting this cancer. The hospital had released her to go home, since that was my grandma’s one and only wish was to be at her own house and around all of her family. My grandma and grandpa had 29 grand and great grandchildren and loved every single one of them equally. The thing that inspired me the most was that I was the only one out of anybody in the family that could get her to smile, eat, drink, and carry on a conversation with. I knew at this time I had a special way to help heal sick people and this reinforced my career decision as becoming a nurse. And hopefully one day I will have this encouragement and effect on my own patients. 18

However that did not phase the ones who where there, they were determined and played their hearts out. To see them transform throughout the entire year and grow not only as players but as people too. I could not have been more proud of them. It was very satisfying to know that all the hard work that Aimee and I put into our team paid off.
