Craft and sustainability: five examples


CRAFT “BOROVNICA”

 Craft Blueberry is located in Gorski kotar region.  The owner of the craft is Mrs Nataša Kozlica. She started with the activities in the year 2000 as a family farm that is primarily engaged in growing strawberries  Today the production grew so the craft produces strawberries, raspberries, blueberries…  Craft Blueberry is doing plantation management services, advice in the production of berries, soil analysis, protection, fertilization, cottage garden design, report preparation, agricultural and other projects, training for producers


The specific content of the initiative

 The owner of the craft, Mrs Kozlica through years of working in this field realized that in Gorski kotar region there are only a few manufacturers of berry fruits and that this fruit is grown and processed in one outdated, bit primitive way  So, because of that she decided to found Association “Juniper berry” to bring together producers and to find a way to get to the costumers


The environmental issues

The production of the craft is under the motto “Fresh sales” in a short period of time it allows the freshly picked fruit that is quickly on their shelves and inspires consumers through smell and taste.


The social issues

 The craft is social responsible in its production, it contribute to a better society and a cleaner environment, interacting with other stakeholders (consumers)  The craft takes care of the society and environment and fulfils legislation.


Concern for the quality of governance and participation  Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Crafts perform administrative and other tasks related to small and medium sized enterprises, crafts, cooperatives, promotion of exports and foreign investment, and improving competitiveness in the field of small and medium-sized enterprises.  Croatian Chamber of Crafts is an independent professional craftsmen organization established to promote, harmonize and represent the common interests of crafts. The Chamber represents craftsmen to government and other bodies in the country and abroad.

 The Blueberry craft is connected with the Association Juniper berry in witch are in communication all the berry manufacturers. Association’s tasks, primarily, are: good information and education of members on practical experience and the latest developments in the production of these fruits.  In doing so, Croatian Bureau of Agricultural and Advisory Service are helping by providing experts.


Contribution to the development of a sustainable economy: areas of greatest relevance  This craft except growing berry fruits deals with agro tourism  Craft has a shop specializing in the sale of raw materials, seedlings of fruit and ornamental plants, water soluble fertilizers and greenhouses  also advises producers during planting and production of strawberries and berries and perform soil analysis

 The craft is also creative in a way that the owner has a new approach – Education garden where you can find accessible corner of untouched nature and escape from the urban environment  There is also a souvenir shop where you can buy liquor, syrup, jam or fresh fruits directly from the garden


CRAFT “KOTAČ”

 Craft Wheel is located in Lokve in Gorski kotar region. The owner is Mr Vid Arbanas  It is a crafts for producing brandies and liqueurs and has been active several years and has an important place in the case of unusual drinks


The specific content of the initiative

 His first liquor "San Hubert" was created as a response from family Arbanas to the famous German "Jaggermaister“  "San Hubert" is an original Croatian "Jagger", prepared from 57 herbs and 7 kinds of fruits that are harvested here, and premium brandy from the area.  Everything is the result of long deliberations, in some way, they wanted to tell the story of this area


The environmental issues

Environmental impact is reduced to rational use of recourses, reduction of emissions to air, soil, water, and reducing waste through separate waste collection and recycling.


The social issues

 The craft takes care of the society and environment and fulfils legislation.  Creation of a network of collaboration between small craft businesses who are manufacturing similar products

 The facility at 115 square meters offers a permanent exhibition thematically related to past Louisiana road, in a special room decorated tasting room is already known highland herbal liqueur that produces them Type Arbanas, owner trades "Wheel"


CRAFT “KVRGA”

 Craft for wood “Kvrga” is located in Ravna Gora, region of Gorski kotar  The owner is Dražen Vančina who started with the activities in 2004  Products of wood: the staircase, stair, railings for balconies and stairs, handrails and similar products  The production uses native woody material of fir, spruce, pine, beech and oak


The specific content of the initiative

 After a bad situation that has befallen the factory for the manufacture of furniture where he worked, the craftsman decided to start his own business.  Therefore, it the year 2004 he opened a business for wood processing and signed a contract with the company "CALLIGARIS" Ltd. engaged in the production of chairs, armchairs, tables and other furniture for home equipment.


The environmental issues

 The activity that the craftsman is undertaking has no negative impact on the environment  Wood waste that is the result of the production, the craftsman uses for heating commercial premises and the quantities of other waste are negligible. It disposes in garbage cans and dumpsters that craft regulary empties and disposes of in landfill waste


 Due to outdated ways of doing business, old equipment, lack of knowledge of contemporary design and market demands, disinvestment in employee education and the high cost of these products, the remaining small number of manufacturers of furniture and accessories made ​of wood.  Craft stands out with NEW SKILLS: 3D simulation of future products  Participation on exhibits and fairs: - Spring and Autumn Fair in Rijeka - Mountain Fair in Skrad.

CRAFT “PČELICA ANA”  Craft for honey production is located in Delnice, Gorski kotar region  The owner is Mr Marinko Pleše who started with the activities in 2005  Products of honey: honey, propolis, pollen, honey liqueur mead-enriched herbs, fruit brandy, liquor of wild blueberries, brandy with medicinal herbs


The specific content of the initiative

In the beginning it was just a hobby, and now it's serious family business


The environmental issues

All products are packaged in an ECO cardboard or wooden packaging.

Participation on fairs in Primorsko-goranska county


CRAFT “MEDIČARNA ŠĆURIC”  Family business that deals with creating and selling traditional souvenirs – gingerbread heart  In their product range they offer twenty size gingerbread hearts (from 3cm to 45cm) crown, horse, baby, shoe, jewelry for pine ...  All gingerbread hearts are manufactured in different colors (red, yellow, white, blue, green, purple)

They started with the production because they wanted to give their loved ones a unique gift Family production has grown in a craft production of gingerbread hearts


The environmental issues

According to the new EU legislation, in Croatia is now in progress sorting the waste in glass, plastic and paper


Contribution to the development of a sustainable economy: areas of greatest relevance The craft is creative in a way that they are producing gingerbread hearts with the appropriate descriptions (for birthdays, baptisms, weddings ...)
