Long Beach Catholic Regional School ‘Stayed Strong’ Long Beach school is an inspiration in recovery from Sandy

Regional School. She has been a part of the school for 34 years, the last 15 as principal. Yet, on this day Danca seriously wondered how much longer it would be there. Superstorm Sandy was barreling toward Long Island, and Long Beach Catholic Regional School could not have been in a worse location. The school is situated right on Long Beach’s south shore, across the street from the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, the ocean and the boardwalk could be seen from the window in Danca’s office. Because of the school’s location, and the power of the storm that meteorologists were warning of, Danca seriously wondered if the school would still be there in 48 hours. From the boardwalk, she took a picture of the school. “Stay strong, she thought to herself. The following day, Long Island, and in particular Long Beach, felt the full fury of Sandy. The boardwalk is now gone, homes were damaged and much property was destroyed. Diocesan officials went to Long Beach and determined that students would not be able to return to school for a while and plans were already under way to temporarily locate the school to St. Catherine of Sierra in Franklin Square. Then, something happened that Danca describes as a “miracle.

Third-grade teacher Kelly Toritto (l) and Principal Veronica Danca look on as thirdgrade students open shoe box gifts from another Catholic school on Long Island.

The doors of the school building were opened and there was not a drop of water to be found. “I couldn’t believe there was no water in the building, said Sister Joanne Callahan, superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. There was still work to be done. The electricity had to be powered back up, the streets had to be cleared, and the streetlights had to be turned back on. With the help of the Army Corps of Engineers and others, all of that got done,

and students were welcomed back to Long Beach Catholic Regional School on Wednesday, Nov. 14 after missing just nine days of school. The following day Bishop William Murphy celebrated mass in the school and referred to the students as “Long Beach Catholic’s Brave Kids. “It was one of the most rewarding days we’ve ever had, says Danca about the reopening of the school. continued on page 8

Holy Trinity Diocesan High School offers congratulations to all Catholic schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre for fostering excellence in education to almost 32,000 students on Long Island and for empowering all members of the educational community to witness the Gospel and render service with compassion.

By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ears ago, the convent on the grounds of the Church of St. Dominic in Oyster Bay was home to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters whose purpose was to administer to the schools and parish of St. Dominic and to educate the young minds who would shape the future. Today, the building is still helping to broaden the educational experience of students at St. Dominic’s. Because of an anonymous $10 million donation, the convent has been renovated into a state-of-the-art science and communications center. The facility includes five high school labs, a greenhouse, a reflection room, a television studio and two elementary labs, one of which will enable distance learning. It was opened in September of 2012 and folks at St.

Dominic’s are very excited about it. “Saint Dominic has always been a leader here on Long Island, and we will once again take the lead in developing science programs which will be second-to-none in Catholic education,” wrote Father Kevin Smith, the pastor of St. Dominic’s, in an alumni newsletter. Denise Smith, the principal of Saint Dominic High School, says the renovated building offers many new opportunities to students. Currently, students taking Advanced Placement Biology are participating in a program held in partnership between St. Dominic’s and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. They are learning about molecular biology and biology techniques used in current research to address questions about biodiversity, gene function, and human variation. While the new center will allow St. Dominic’s to develop the minds who may develop the next major scientific breakthrough, the principal believes that the new center will also help St. Dominic’s address the needs of all students. continued on page 14

Catholic Schools Bless Video Games As Leading To Fitness Grant allows Catholic schools to encourage exercise through video games program By Ronald Scaglia rscaglia@antonnews.com ideo games are often blamed for childhood obesity, but Catholic schools this year are using such games to try and get kids to be more physically active. The schools are using a unique program called iGame4. Representatives of the company that makes the game, who are also educators, set up video games in the gymnasium of schools within the Diocese of Rockville Centre for periods of one week at a time. Instead of routine physical education activities, students play video games, which encourage them to be physically active. They play Fruit Ninja, Kinect Adventures (Reflex Ridge and River Rush) and Just Dance, with various dance activities. If these were done without the video game component, it would be a good workout. However, students think they are playing a video game. Educators are very pleased with the results. “It’s just wonderful to really help kids look at exercise, which is so important in our society,” said Superintendent of Schools Sister Joanne Callahan. “There are many people who do exercise but there’s many who don’t. We encouraged the children to exercise but did so with a sense of fun.” In addition to introducing students to physical activity, iGame4 also allows physical ed-

Long Beach Catholic Regional School ‘Stayed Strong’ continued from page 3

“There was so much emotion in that school and it was all positive emotion.” Danca adds that reopening the school so quickly was beneficial to the children to help provide them with a sense of normalcy and direction amidst all the chaos that was left in the wake of Sandy. However, it was not just Long Beach Catholic Regional School students who benefited from the school’s quick reopening. St. Francis Hospital has used the building to serve a Thanksgiving dinner. Tunnel to the Towers set up hurricane relief in the school. A tremendous toy drive was held in the school’s gymnasium, which was held in coordination with fire departments, police departments and organizations that support those affected by cancer. Additionally, the school has also been used to celebrate masses, as the local church was badly damaged by the storm. “It was not just our gift, but a gift to the entire community,” Danca says proudly. The students at the school also took the opportunity to give back. They traveled around in cars, handing out sandwiches to those who were helping with the recovery efforts or simply trying to put the pieces of their homes back together. The students went to their neighbors’ homes and shared their books with those who had nothing to read. They also helped move the piles of trash that had accumulated. Danca says that the kids are maintaining a positive attitude, which is spreading throughout the Long Beach community. “They’re not focusing on troubling times, they’re looking ahead to what we believe is the good that will

come,” Danca says of the students, adding that the children are not focused on the loss of the boardwalk but how nice the new boardwalk will be when it is built. Along the way, the children have also been the benefactors of many acts of kindness and generosity. Someone who Danca refers to as a “Christmas angel,” donated 500 tickets to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas show so that the children would have a hap-

py memory from the season. The school has also received many gift cards in the mail. “It’s just been one miraculous thing after another” says Danca. “It gave us something positive to focus on and the good that other people do.” Now, three months after Sandy struck, it is quite evident that Long Beach Catholic Regional School, and its students, faculty, parents have indeed “stayed strong.”

ucation teachers the opportunity to discuss other health matters such as maintaining a healthy weight and a healthy heart rate. After playing a video game, physical education teachers ask their students about their heart rate and how they feel in general. The goal is for students to desire the good feeling that exercise brings and they therefore want to do more exercise to recapture that feeling. “The longer they do it the more likely they’ll remain active,” says Norma Whitley, assistant superintendent for educational technology for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. “We try to prolong it and make it an active routine in their life.” To help prolong it, students are encouraged to continue physical activity for eight weeks following their participation in iGame4 and to keep a log of doing so. Those who do are eligible for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. The program began because of a grant awarded to the Diocese of Rockville Centre from Catholic Health Services intended to improve the general health curriculum. The diocese saw the benefits of iGame4 and applied for the grant to fund the program. This school year, every diocesan elementary school re-

ceived or will receive one week of the program. Although the grant expires this year the program has been successful enough that administrators are considering bringing it back next year. “A lot of feedback was that they enjoyed it enough that next year they would consider having them back,” said Whitley. “The principals felt the company was very professional and felt it was well worth it.” The principals and teachers of the schools also got in on the fun. One morning of each week’s session was dedicated to allowing faculty to enjoy the activities. “Some of the administrators came down and once they started doing it they said ‘Wow this is really fun,” remarked Whitley, “They had a better idea and understanding of what it’s about. Involving the teachers was helpful because they could talk about health in other areas.” Parents also got to join in. During each session, there is an evening in which parents are allowed to try out the games themselves and see what all the fun is about. “Kids love seeing the teachers coming in during the morning and using it, and then it’s fun watching parents doing it during family night,” said Sister Joanne.

magine flying across continents in a flash, or trying out an assortmenrt of musical instruments in a few scant moments, or having worlds of information about a particular artist at your fingertips. All this is now possible through technology, particularly the iPad, which is in heavy use in schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. “More than half of our schools have an iPad program in place,” says Norma Whitley, assistant superintendent for educational technology for the diocese. “At St. Aidan’s, the entire 5th grade has an iPad. They’re not only using them in school but bringing them back and forth,” she said. iPads are allowing teachers to do things in the classroom that weren’t possible just a few years ago. For example, music teachers can allow their students to try different instruments through the use of the tablet and an app and actually have a jam session in the classroom. Instead of using a recorder as had been done in the past, students today actually learn how to play instruments and compose music. iPads are also transforming art classes. By using different apps, students can create different types of artwork. When studying an artist, students have examples of the artist’s work and information about the artist, literally at their fingertips on the iPad. They can then take that information and create a work of art, again right on the device. “Art teachers find it very interesting,” says Whitley. “It’s an alternative to using paint and paper.” Science students can use the iPads to record the video of an experiment. Students can also use a moviemaker app to create a class project. Early childhood educators are using iPads to help teach students letter, word and shape recognition. “iPads and other mobile devices help us to meet the needs of all students much easier than it ever was before,” said Superintendent of Schools Sister Joanne Callahan. “There is such a potential for good learning with these devices, but it has to be done appropriately and correctly.” She says that she is amazed by a recent

videoconference between students in a diocesan school and students in Australia. There is a large time difference, so it was early in the morning for one group of students and the evening for the other group. Sister Joanne says activities like that are ways that technology can really enhance education and help students understand different cultures and places. However, she adds that another task of educators is to help students discern the value of the information that is gathered online. “The Internet is terrific but it is also awful. Just because you read it on the Internet, doesn’t make it true. How do we teach students to be discerning about the information?” The superintendent says that the Internet is an amazing teaching tool. Students can now access the Library of Congress or museums - something not possible in the not too distant past, which is why having an iPad program is so important. Another advantage of iPads is the flexibility they provide for teachers in the classroom. Instead of having to remain near a chalkboard, or close to a projector, teachers can move about a classroom and use an iPad to change what students are viewing on the screen. This also helps teachers create a better learning experience, as they’re able to interact with their students more closely instead of being tethered to a wired projector. If giving a lesson on the solar system, imagine a teacher displaying a crisp, color image of the planets as opposed to showing a slide or making a drawing with chalk or dry erase markers. Students can then “fly” on an iPad virtual spaceship to the planet and see it up close. “It allows teachers to determine how to better improve instruction,” said Whitley.
