PUBLISHER’S NOTE Summer is for outdoor fun with family, friends and pets. Summer also inspires you to get into the best physical shape that you can be, so you can go out on the beach in your newest swim wear. I see people working hard at the gym every morning. I work out 5-6 days a week too. I want to lose the few pounds that I was hiding in my winter clothes. I Veera Mahajan PUBLISHER AND EDITOR work hard, I box, I do cardio work, and weights. I even do boot camp training twice a week. But, I still am having a hard time losing those five pounds. I ask my trainer for advice and he asks me what I ate for dinner. That is where the problem is. That’s right, exercise alone is not going to help if I keep eating late, and, very often, heavy dinners. Anyone who has seen exercise actually work knows that working-out will help tone and build muscle, but for weight loss the only thing that works is watching what goes in your mouth. Late eating, over eating, and the sugar monster, are sure ways to gain and keep weight on. Second helpings should invite a definite NO, and taste the desserts only once in a while. After you have enjoyed tasting the sweet stuff, please just walk away. There is no need to keep sweet-eating. The taste does not get any better. It is the same taste that you have already tasted. A moment on the lips and a lifetime on the hips! Think it. Believe it. It is a true statement! As always, I invite you to send me a note at veera@malibuchronicle.com for any suggestions, comments or just to say hello. I look forward to hearing from you.

Computers here, computers there - Computers computing everywhere, Here a click, there a click Everywhere a click click, They’re in your homes, they’re in your phones - Today they’re often in your bones, But the most important one of all - Is the one residing in your domes! That’s right--- the most valuable computer of all is the one attached to your neck.

So, since you’re regularly upgrading your software, how about giving a thought or two to upgrading your ‘mindwear’. After all, your computer can’t remember a name for you when you happen to land in an elevator (with the exec you met at yesterday’s meeting); And it can’t give a speech for you when you’re perched at the podium (in front of a packed parish); It can’t take a test for you when you’re stuck in a classroom (with your pencil poised); It also can’t find your keys, your glasses, or remember where you parked your car. It’s your mental computer that has to come thru for you in those scenarios, and it can’t do that if you haven’t got it programmed. A.I. – to – O.A.

Now, recognizing that we are all inhabiting the computer age, we familiarize ourselves with A.I., which is a mnemonic for Artificial Intelligence, (computers designed to imitate human thinking). {You should be familiar with the term ‘mnemonic’, (a Greek word meaning ‘of the mind’), since your computer programs are filled with the plural of same…But if you’re not …just Google it… go to your handiest A.I. gadget and look it up (the word- not the movie). And then, with your cognition intact, after thanking God for the Goog, you can thank the Greeks for showing us the way to engineer our mental computers.}

Anyway, those sons of Silicon Valley are continually developing A.I. programming that can ape and upgrade the mechanisms of human reasoning and learning. But if you think that A.I. is better than the real thing – stop and remind yourself that it took a human brain to create the one sitting on your desk, (or residing in your pocket). So about those names/ speeches/ tests/ keys/ etc. that you need to recover using your mental computer. Relax the A.I. for a moment and start minding your ‘mindwear’ by unleashing your O.A. It’s the mnemonic for Original Awareness. ZOOM IN!

Create an Original Awareness (O.A.) icon in your human brain and engineer your mental computer by programming it to zoom-in and focus. That means you have to do more than just see and hear. You have to observe and listen; The eye sees but it takes the mind to observe. The ear hears but it’s the mind that does the listening. Focusing entails collecting information and connecting it to your known intelligence. You could be sitting all day in a room and not remember the color of the carpet if you never gave it any attention, meaning, O.A. Original Awareness. You could repeat a person’s name a dozen times and not know it 7 seconds later if you never made a connection from the name to your thinking. With every new fact that you wish to remember you have to hit the ‘save key’ on your ‘mindwear’ by asking yourself “What does that make me think of?” That’s how to focus, create Original Awareness, and wake up your cerebrum.

LIFEstyle

It’s not the time to…. • Be checking your e-mail…. • Be acting out your ‘Cellephone’ obsession…. • Be texting your posse in Paduka…. • Be twittering about the twerp you twerked…. ….And the reason you can’t find your keys is simply you weren’t paying attention when you flipped them. Again, you were lacking in Original Awareness. (and you better turn on your O.A. when you park your vehicle, if, after your assignation, you want to relocate your horse or your Ferrari.) BY THE WAY:

Can you tell me right now whose face is on the $20 dollar bill? Probably not- for the same reason you probably can’t tell me which profileleft or right-is on the Lincoln penny. You’ve most likely (unless you’re from Katmandu or Lower Slobbovia) seen both the ‘twenny’ and a penny more times than you can count, but it’s doubtful you ever focused on either. It’s a question of lacking O.A. (OK Smarty, so you knew whose face was on the $20..Big Deal..What’s on the back?) So don’t blame your memory if you haven’t made the recollection connection. You just haven’t pushed your Original Awareness button. You can certainly turn off your A.I. But your O.A. should always be flickering. Make it a habit. Put an App for that in your cranium. If you want your memory to be clearGet your ‘MINDWEAR’ in gear And keep it there!

It’s Not The Time To…….

When studying for exams or prepping for speeches, etc, focus is the operative word. Distraction is verboten. Giving attention to your electronic ego when in study mode thoroughly flushes away your focus.

That little girl grew up to be a gorgeous, talented actress, singer, beauty and fitness fanatic. She is a mother of eight-year-old son Maddox. She is the face of SyFy’s special effects and make-up competition series, “Face Off”, that is now entering into its 7th season.

Westmore is engaged to Patrick Tatopoulos. McKenzie is recognized for her 10year run as “Sheridan Crane” on NBC’s daytime drama, “Passions”. I was not surprised that she was known as America’s sweetheart in “Passions” because she is one in real life. When I called her for an interview, one day before her birthday in April, she was such a delight to talk to. She gave me her full attention and politely and excitedly answered all my questions till the mother in her kicked in and she had to go pick up her son. I understand and admire that balance of a workingwoman and a mom. Westmore’s additional television and film credits include “Weird Science, Star Trek”: “TNG, Star Trek Voyager”, “Friends”, “Dexter”, “Surviving Suburbia”, “Star Trek” the feature film, and a recurring roll on ABC’s “All My Children”. McKenzie is a trained opera singer, and has had extensive theatre training that includes the Lee Strasberg Institute and Uta Hagen Master Class. Westmore has been a certified trainer and nutritionist for 10 years. McKenzie strives to empower women with beauty tips so they may realize that by spending five minutes on themselves everyone can attain true beauty potential. She is developing a line of top-shelf cosmetics. In 2008, Westmore family received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their pioneering work in make-up for over 2,000 films and television series. McKenzie learned about special effects makeup from her father, Michael Westmore. Michael worked on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and its many spin-offs. He received nine Emmys, and an Oscar for the film, “Mask”. McKenzie learned all about everyday makeup from her mom Marion. Marion was a model for costume designer, Edith Head. McKenzie is very close with her parents and is best friends with her siblings. She loves to do fun things with her family. She says she will never give up goofing around. I totally agree that goofing around with friends and family is the best way to make sure you will keep enjoying life. FOR MORE NEWS GO TO MALIBUCHRONICLE.COM

‘CALIFORNIA LOVE’

Reveling in five of the hottest convertibles for my next coastal road trip WRITTEN BY MARCUS AMICK

Dear California,

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH ULTIMATE VOLANTE: V12 ENGINE WITH 565 HORSEPOWER AND A 0 – 60 MPH TIME OF 4.1 SECONDS.

There is nothing more soothing then cruising your Pacific Coast Highway in a convertible. Nothing. Sure, I imagine after seeing the breathtaking views every day for so long, it’s easy to grow numb to it all. But rest assured, some of the most coveted spots to drive a convertible are in Southern California, which is why your roads are envied by so many car lovers around the world. Even with reports of a recent decline in convertible sales, there still is nothing comparable to driving one in places like Malibu. From the thrill of the open top riding through the mountains to the smell of the

fresh ocean air along the PCH, it’s an experience like no other. Forgive me if I sound a bit like a tourist. Even after spending a great deal of time in your state, I tend to find myself recalling some of my road trips back home in the Midwest where the views require a bit more imagination. Still, I make no excuses for the fact that of all the roads I’ve test driven new cars on during my travels, your PCH still ranks as one of my favorite. Of course, the automobile and point of destination can certainly enhance the experience. That goes without saying. However, this year’s

2015 MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION: 583 HORSEPOWER V8 ENGINE WITH A 0 TO 60 TIME OF 3.6 SECONDS.

line-up of convertibles features a few highperformance models that’ll have most dreaming of the most routine drives just to get behind the wheel. Perhaps one of the most stunning is the Aston Martin Vanquish Ultimate Volante. The new convertible Vanquish, touted as a pinnacle mark for the brand, is something to behold both inside and out. In fact, it’s the first Aston Martin to be sculpted entirely from carbon fiber to ensure that every element of the designers’ vision was maintained. The sports car’s beauty is accented with a V12 engine with 565 horsepower and a 0 – 60 mph time of 4.1 seconds. While the exterior design hasn’t changed much, the 2015 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible is no less impressive. The new convertible builds on the appeal of its high–performance coupe counterpart, which is heralded as the fastest production Bentley ever. It features a W12 engine with an estimated 626 horsepower and a 0 – 60 mph time of 4.0 seconds. Unique interior features include a choice of contrasting stitching and color on the seats, doors, rear quarter panels, center console, and armrests. When it comes to the experience associated with driving exclusive convertibles in California, no brand in the world carries more prestige than Ferrari. The Italian automaker’s latest model, the 2015 Ferrari California T, features a retractable hard-top equipped with a twin turbo V8 with 553 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 3.6 seconds. Inspired by the 250 TestaRossa, the California T is defined by its long front wingspan that stretches to the cockpit, which gives the Ferrari a very distinctive profile. The interior features many of the same contemporary design cues that have come to define Ferrari. Certainly one of the most exclusive in this year’s line-up, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition is definitely not

for the discrete. Limited to just 350 models, the convertible features an exposed carbon fiber hood accented by racing cues that carry over into the interior. The topless Mercedes is equipped with a 583 horsepower V8 engine with a 0 to 60 time of 3.6 seconds. For classic appeal in a new convertible look no further than the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. A tribute to Porsche’s legacy in the world of performance, the new 911 is powered by a six- cylinder turbocharged engine with 560 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 3.0 seconds. Inside, the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet features many of the same design elements that give the exterior so much classic appeal. Now, if I can just get my hands on one of these hot convertibles for an LA test drive, I’ll be all set for my next weekend getaway to San Diego. Best regards,

entitled "Let It Bleed", or maybe not, I could swear that Mick Jagger was the spitting image of Paul McCartney. After coming down from my mini hallucination the diminished number on the scale was a fabulous payoff. I broke the fast with watered down Lipton's chicken broth. It tasted like heaven. And of course I walked to and from the movie theaters, at least a three-mile walk each way. Then I moved to Los Angeles where no one walked! But they did all this other stuff – and all of a sudden I had to learn a new language. What did these strange words mean: carbs, cardio, antioxidants, fiber, aerobics, jazzercise, basil metabolism, reps, jogging, personal trainers, step aerobics, bench pressing, abs, deltoids, ad infinitum. What was all this about anyway? Everyone rode around in cars; no one walked. But people “worked out”. I quickly learned that as a young woman, to be happy in Los Angeles was to be thin. As a New Yorker, I felt to be attractive I had to dress with savvy, adapt the current hairdo, wear flattering makeup, take classes, talk a lot about politics, books, theater, movies and concerts, and wear a huge overcoat in the winter that would hide a multitude of sins. In New York, getting ready for the bathing suit season meant to seriously starve. In Los Angeles, where people wear shorts and tee shirts most of the year, life meant working out, all months of the year. In New York, one went to a shrink… In Los Angeles, to a gym. I think it's all well and good to put physical health (i.e. appearance) before the desire for chocolate and Big Macs. But somehow all this ego-centered emphasis on the body has dimmed my brainpower. A few days ago I actually did read a totally thought provoking book called "Naming Names" which talks of the terrible blacklisting in America in the '50s. I was on the treadmill at the time.

Bennet Olan also influenced David’s love for the natural world. An avid hiker – almost to the day he died in 2011 – Ben was an active member of the Sierra Club. This love and respect for nature was further nurtured when, after his parents’ divorce and his mother’s remarriage, the family moved to Orinda when David was seven years old. “Surfing, paddle boarding, tennis, music, skateboarding, golf, hiking, snowboarding and skiing, when we can get away, all feed my soul,” says David. “Work is often handling adversarial issues. That can be stressful. These activities and my family life are my sanctuary.” To David, “doing what’s right” is not just a 9 – 5 activity. He is active in numerous community activities, particularly ones that involve the environment or surfing. In early 2002, when David realized how many of his attorney friends were surfers, he co-founded, with the administrative and organizational help of Sharon, the nonprofit Association of Surfing Lawyers. Today, there are chapters of ASL worldwide. Another organization David is passionate about is Life Rolls On, a nonprofit that supports people who have spinal cord injuries. David has served on the advisory committee and provided legal counsel to the organization. Recently, on a jagged overlook on his Big Rock Mesa backyard hill, Dave built, what he calls, a surf lookout retreat. It consists mainly of a faded Adirondack chair and an old surfboard, but the ocean vista is spectacular. “When I sit up here, I reflect about my life, my family, and my friends,” says David. “It is such a privilege to have this life in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I try never to forget to be grateful. It is this gratitude that helps me keep my life in balance.”

RAW LIVING

INTERVIEW WITH JASON WROBEL

“WE CERTAINLY AREN’T HAVING HEART ATTACKS IN THIS COUNTRY BECAUSE OF OVEREATING BROCCOLI! IF ANYTHING, WE NEED TO BE EATING A LOT CLOSER TO THE EARTH, A LOT MORE SUSTAINABLY, NOT ONLY FOR OUR HUMAN BODIES BUT ALSO FOR THE PLANET. “

closer to the earth, a lot more sustainably, not only for our human bodies but also for the planet. YOU’RE A BIG PROPONENT OF HAVING FUN WITH YOUR FOOD, AND YOU EVEN BRING MUSIC INTO THE PROCESS. HOW DO YOU SUGGEST OTHER PEOPLE FIND THAT PLAYFULNESS WHILE COOKING?

JASON, YOU CALL YOURSELF A “RAW VEGAN CHEF” SPECIALIZING IN AN ALL PLANTBASED DIET. BOTH RAW AND VEGAN DIETS EXCLUDE ANIMAL PRODUCTS, INCLUDING DAIRY, BUT EATING RAW REQUIRES LITTLE TO NO COOKING, WHILE EATING VEGAN EMPLOYS STANDARD COOKING METHODS. SHOULD EACH TYPE BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH EACH OTHER?

What I advocate from a culinary perspective is for people to eat more plantbased foods, whether they’re raw or they’re cooked. Everything that I do is dairy-free, meat-free, mostly glutenfree, and free of any animal products. That culinary philosophy is in line with both cooked and raw food. Basically everyone can benefit from eating more whole, minimally processed, plant-based food. Everyone can have a little more of fruits, veggies, and seeds, as well as mindfully prepared foods in their diet. We certainly aren’t having heart attacks in this country because of overeating broccoli! If anything, we need to be eating a lot

Whenever you’re enjoying yourself and you’re having fun, that energy goes directly into the food. Think about how much love our grandparents or our parents who cooked meals for us had. They were so excited to nourish us and give us that food. It’s kind of the same philosophy with music. Whenever I’m making food, I love to put on music from my childhood: Motown, Soul, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, or Marvin Gaye. Stuff that I grew up with in Detroit because it brings me into such a joyful place where I’m putting that creative inspiration, that joy, right into the food. Honestly, people can taste the difference. I’m a big foodie. In addition to making food, I love trying new restaurants. I can actually physically taste the difference when food is being made with joy, creativity, and excitement versus somebody who’s just throwing it together and doesn’t really care. So music to me is just a way to heighten the energy and excitement around the creation of food. Being a trained singer and having been making music for years too, I

think the art forms are very similar. With music you’re layering. You’ve got the drums and bass, guitars, vocals, and the horns. And with food, it’s kind of the same. You’ve got your spices, sauce, herbs, and your main ingredients. They’re very layered creatively, so I find a lot of similarities between creating music and creating food. HOW DO YOU EXTEND THAT PLAYFULNESS TO SUCH CHORES AS FOOD SHOPPING AND FOOD PREP?

I think preparation is the key to making those more enjoyable. A lot of people feel overwhelmed when they’re going shopping or preparing new meals because they feel like there are so many new things to buy. Whenever I go out to the farmer’s market or even the supermarket to get ingredients, I look at recipes online, where there are thousands of amazing free vegetarian/ vegan/raw recipes. Find some recipes that feel really good and look amazing. Write down the ingredients beforehand, either physically write them out or put the notes in your Smartphone. Preparation keeps you from having that feeling of being in the aisles of the farmer’s market going, “What should I buy? This is all so overwhelming. What the heck is colerobbie? I’ve never seen that before…” It can be really intimidating for people who are not prepared. I think creating those lists, looking at recipes beforehand, and planning your recipes out for the week makes it a lot easier and more exciting.

THIS TREATMENT IS FAVORED BY THE MAJORITY OF PHYSICIANS AND IS APPROVED BY THE FDA. IN OUR PRACTICE, WE HAVE TREATED HUNDREDS OF WOMEN, AND EVEN SOME MEN, FOR THIS RELATIVELY HARMLESS, BUT UNWELCOMED CONDITION.

Treatment of:

Spider veins: Those red, purple, and blue veins that are most often seen on the legs. Number of treatments:

Most spider veins need a series of treatments for optimal results Recovery:

Return to everyday activities the next day, and vigorous workouts within 1-2 weeks. Treatment details:

Sclerotherapy treatments are simple and pretty quick; depending on how many areas you want to treat. The treatment area will be injected with a sclerosing agent and depending upon the size of the area being treated, more than one injection may be necessary. Most procedures take about 30 to 45 minutes to perform. The solution is an irritant that makes the veins collapse and eventually fade out of sight. You will need to wear compression stockings initially to help the veins collapse properly. Walking is a good thing, so plan to do that daily. Sclerotherapy is great for treating spider veins and will get you back in your favorite shorts this summer! Please call 805.484.6900 to schedule your complimentary consultation.

WORLD CLASS BRAIN & SPINE TREATMENT MINIMALLY INVASIVE TREATMENT HELPS PATIENTS RETURN TO WORK...OFTEN THE NEXT DAY!

an you return to work the day after having back surgery? Seems impossible! Patients of Dr. Anthony Virella receive world-class neurosurgical care on an outpatient basis. Dr. Virella explains, "The minimally invasive procedures we use allow spine patients to return to work the very next day. I even had a patient return to work the same day!" Dr. Virella makes spine surgery as pleasant and stress-free as ... a walk on the beach. He uses a variety of treatment plans, which result in only 10% of his patients requiring surgery. Those are really positive statistics since most people who have had traditional spine surgery find recovery to be a long, difficult and painful journey. Not the case with Dr. Virella, whose #1 goal is to make sure patients return to an active, healthy lifestyle that is pain free. Dr. Virella's treatment plans are marked with exceptional personal care from start to finish. Dr. Virella is a Board-Certified; Fellowship trained Neurological Spine Surgeon with advanced training in the management of complex spinal disorders. Diagnosis and treatment of a patient's condition can be done entirely at Virella Neurosurgery's two offices located in Westlake Village and Simi Valley. Dr. Virella's cutting edge equipment and care plans give patients the freedom to stay local instead of making the long trip to UCLA, USC, or out of state hospitals for specialized treatment. He offers world-class treatment conveniently located here in our community. Every patient has a personalized care plan called a Comprehensive Treatment Plan. The plan combines what Dr. Virella describes as a "multimodality treatment plan" that suits the needs of each patient. He starts with a review of several factors including medical history, a physical exam, and a neurological examination that may include new tests such as CT Scans, MRI’s, X-rays, and a review of any past medical exams and treatments.

Using surgery only when necessary, Dr. Virella creates a treatment plan that may include chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, epidural injections, lifestyle and behavioral modifications, strength and core building exercises. The main focus is providing a treatment plan that is minimally invasive. The goal is for each patient to return to their life – work, activities, sports, and family responsibilities – pain free and equipped with tools for long lasting health. On the rare occasion that a patient requires surgery, the operation is almost always done on an outpatient basis. All of the post-operative care is handled in Dr. Virella's office. He follows the patients very closely with a post-operative Treatment Plan after surgery to guarantee a full recovery. Dr. Virella is considered a pioneer in the world of Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine and Brain Surgery. He has worked alongside some of the field's leading visionaries, such as Edward C. Benzel, M.D. and Larry T. Khoo, M.D. Dr. Virella attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and is a graduate of the UCLA Neurosurgery Residency Program. He completed his complex spine in-folding resident fellowship at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He completed a second fellowship in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center. While at UCLA, Dr. Virella worked hand in hand with Dr. Khoo developing and refining most of the minimally invasive spine surgery techniques that are used worldwide today He was involved in some of the very first minimally invasive lumbar interbody fusions that were performed on the West Coast. Dr. Virella has authored numerous articles and lectured nationally and internationally in the field of complex and minimally invasive spine surgery. He is also considered a specialist with extensive training in the management of cerebrovascular disease, including cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVM's). Dr. Virella is a boardcertified Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Virella is in private practice with offices in Westlake Village and Simi Valley. He also has affiliations with several local hospitals including, Los Robles Hospital and Medical, Simi Valley Hospital, Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital, Temple Community Hospital in Los Angeles and Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City. Many people live with pain because the possibility of major surgery brings fears of putting life on hold. Virella Neurosurgery abolishes those fears with personalized care and minimally invasive treatments. His caring bedside manner and conservative treatment options create a truly positive experience for his patients. Dr. Virella states, "I offer world class treatment and personalized care in our local community." To learn more please visit www.dr-virella.com.

HEY DAD,

ARE YOU DOING A GOOD JOB?

But I wanted to make an even greater impression. So I enrolled the assistance of a close family friend. He talked about lying, betrayal, trust, and how those issues had affected him in his life. He talked about being the best man he can be and what he needs in other men to have trusting relationships with them. It was a powerful, intimate, and learning experience for the three of us. We all cried some more. Thanks to the support of many men over the years, I learned that to best father my son and daughter, I needed the help of other men. I needed the experience, wisdom and perspectives other than my own that they were able to give me. And I learned that there was no shame in asking for that help. Doing it all over again.

My kids are now 25 and 23. Looking back, I now see where I fell short, when I over-reacted, and when I needed help but didn’t ask for it. And all of my shortcomings were wrapped around my ego. If I had it to do all over again, here’s what I would have done to be a better dad:

Your kids are watching every move you make. They’re cataloguing every argument you’re having with their mother. They’re analyzing their interactions with you and figuring out what makes daddy laugh, or lash out in anger. Your sons will become men very much like you. And your daughters will seek out men just like you. Have I got your attention now? That’s right, you don’t really want her to hang out with boys who resemble the worst parts of you, do you? As the summer months allow us to spend more time with our kids (and I hope you do), it’s a good time to remember just how important your job is, and how critical it is to be your children’s most conscientious role model and vigilant teacher. A story about my son.

In fourth grade, my 10-year-old son lied to his teacher about a class project. She phoned to fill me in and to give me the opportunity to handle it as I saw fit, so I could father my son. I sat him down and shared the importance of trust and integrity in our relationship. It was a good talk. We both cried. Confronting him was emotional for us both. For me, my father had died when I was only nine so I was aware of fathering my son in a way that I had never experienced. For my son, just seeing his dad cry was probably enough to overwhelm his young heart.

32 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

• Explored my childhood issues with a professional before the kids were old enough to push my buttons. • Sought out the perspectives of other men before allowing my fears to drive my reactions. • Developed a healthier relationship with money so I worked less and spent more time with my family. • Meditated daily to keep myself from making mountains out of molehills. • Strengthened my listening skills so I could hear the wisdom my wife always tried to share with me. • Carved out more time to have fun with my buddies so I could recharge and give my best to the ones I loved most.

Now, I was a pretty good dad. I did a lot right. But learning on this job can be quite humbling. With the perspective of years, it’s clear I could have done much better. We can all do better. And that’s my point. You only have one shot to raise your son to be a good, confident man, and to raise your daughter to have a healthy self-image and the strength to be a fabulous woman. It’s up to you, dad. What are you going to teach your children? How are you going to show up this summer?

mostly in front of the camera, but this time, behind it… I’ve learned that every project needs a tagline. In the case of Wish Wizard, it would go something like this… “Hollywood meets heart and turns 4 wishes into hundreds”… A few years back, my dear friend & director Andre Gordon and I were approached with an opportunity of a lifetime. Then Director of Development of the Make-AWish Orange County and the Inland Empire, Janine Ingram, asked us if we were up 34 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

for fulfilling a movie-related wish for a few of their kids. After agreeing to grant the wishes of 3 wish kids who wanted to be actresses, Daria, Kabrina and Kimberly, and Matthew, who wanted to direct and produce, we spent many magical hours at Café 101 in Hollywood crafting up a screenplay about two kids who embark on an enchanted journey, and, with the help of a Wish Wizard, find that happiness lies within… a story that we hoped would parallel what was about to unfold for the kids.

B

where Daria, Kimberly, Matthew, and Kabrina’s family were stars for a night! Red carpet, paparazzi, interviews and all! As I sat amidst a full house, bearing witness to the fruits of labor on the big screen, from the making of, to Kabrina’s life-tribute, and then of course, the film, I snuck a few looks to my right and saw them each enjoying their shining movie moments. Their joy filled my heart to the brim. When they took center stage for the Q and A, I was struck by how humble, grateful and graceful they were and it hit me that they had in fact helped us equally if not more than we had helped them. The opportunity they had created allowed every one of us to experience the greatness lying in the heart of everyone, as so many people gave so much time and heart. Virtually everyone who contributed to Wish Wizard showed more commitment and expressed gaining more from doing this for free than they did for paying gigs; it showed us all the true power of the human heart. As for the kids, all three and one in spirit stood in the spotlight, wise, kind and confident, having clearly grown and changed from the challenges they faced at such an early age. I felt so proud of them… and so happy to see them in their element. Kabrina’s mother later shared that the premiere “was more like a family reunion than what I imagined ‘just another Hollywood premiere’ might be like.” And she was right. If nothing else, we had been successful at one thing. Andre and I and the infinite hands and hearts that had banded around us hadn’t just made a movie, we had participated in a journey where Hollywood meets the heart and a bunch of film buffs were able to make a difference.

ut baring these kids (actually teenagers at the time) were facing life-threatening illnesses at an age when most of us are busy worrying about which color to wear or which boy to chase, we also wanted to parallel the huge hurdle they faced with a huge granted wish. How Huge? Well, let’s just say that between the hair and makeup trailers, Universal Studios wardrobes, Panavision 35mm Cameras, Kodak film, 80+ crew, a cast that included Morgan Freeman, Ed Begley Jr., David Koechner, Judith Hoag, Bobb’e J.Thompson, Marlon Young and ABOUT STEPHANIE DRAPEAU: Cassandra Freeman, and Since arriving in Los Angeles, Stephanie has perthe mentoring help of legformed in over 20 films including Scout, Cabin Fever endary producer/director, 2: Spring Fever, and Closure, and TV series Medium Garry Marshall, … all and Castle. Kimberly described Wish Wizard as “a dream come true…I’m overwhelmed with all the generosity and kindness!” For Daria, it “will forever be a part of my life and it played a role in my growth and maturity as a person… I will never forget the extraordinary people I was lucky enough to meet.” Matthew, who is well on his way to being a full fledged director now, shared how he “learned a lot about what it takes to direct and produce a film. I got to meet so many talented people who donated their time and energy... I'll never forget the experience.” As for Kabrina, who remains a shining light for all of us since passing on… her mother Karen shared that “Wish Wizard was one of the best times she had in her life”. But a movie isn’t done until it’s seen on the big screen, and on April 29th, the world premiere of Janine Ingram, Andre Gordon, Brian, Kabrina (photo) and Karen Cressey, Stephanie Drapeau, Kimberly Voegele, Daria Wish Wizard was held at the Arclight Hollywood, Stachowiak, Matthew Hartman, Rob Nelson. VISUAL EFFECTS OF TOOTH LOSS Loss of a single tooth or multiple teeth can have tremendous effects on an individual’s visual appearance. This is because tooth loss can alter the shape and look of the patient’s face as well as neck due to the deterioration of the jaw. People with missing teeth tend to have a sunken-in appearance on their face. It is for this reason and others that people tend to search for treatment with dental implants. According to several dental researches, people who lose most of their teeth find a loss of height in their face resulting in the patient’s face appearing droopy and unattractive. That means, suddenly a person who otherwise looked appealing starts looking older than his or her age. Likewise, with multiple missing teeth, a patient can find immediate changes on his facial structures. Why does this happen exactly? According to a medical study, teeth in the mouth are naturally designed to fill the face and enable people to chew food and smile. If missing teeth are not replaced with new implant teeth, the supporting jawbone also eventually deteri36 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

orates. This is why older people tend to lose the charm on their face, and their jaw lines and chins are transformed southward due to missing teeth. Furthermore, if a person loses only a specific tooth then it can result in the lost height of his bite. In such cases, the person’s face begins to appear shorter. Likewise, if a person is missing two or more teeth on either side of the face then that specific area of the face starts to look more sunken. These changes are instant and are noticeable as well. Dental implants At Anacapa Dental Art institute - A secure solution In order to prevent yourself from enduring this unwanted visual change due to tooth loss, considering dental implant treatments is a smart solution. Dental implants are titanium made roots that are surgically placed into your jawbone and help to keep your face in the right proportion. Implants also prevent the face from appearing sunken-in and old, as the new implant teeth are permanent and appear much like natural teeth.

Facial changes in older people Age is indeed a factor when it comes to the facial changes in a person. If an older person loses multiple teeth then you can notice changes on his/her face in a short span of time. However, if a younger patient loses teeth, it may take more months to notice the sagging and sunken-in look due to tooth loss. Enhance facial structures and visual appeal with dental implants Dental implants look, feel, and function exactly like natural teeth once they are placed into the jawbone. These look so original that nobody can differentiate that you ever lost teeth. He sticks to a healthy protein-rich diet, eating four or five smaller meals each day. He also keeps well hydrated, drinking five to six liters of water daily. “My diet is typically right on when I'm at home either in Michigan or Florida, and by making an effort, I can usually keep my diet right even when traveling,” he said. < CONTINUED ON PG. 40 >

Scaglione’s fitness regime has long included strength training and swimming. When in Florida, he works on cardio and strength training with Miamibased fitness expert, Billy Beck.

SLEDGE HAMMER/WAR HAMMER: As Albert warms up in his upper body circuit training, he moves from swinging a sledgehammer to the heavier war hammer.

BATTLE ROPES: This exercise is done in 30-second intervals, alternating in intensity.

“YOGA IS AMAZING TO COMBINE WITH STRENGTH TRAINING. IT'S ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR FLEXIBILITY.”

Scaglione keeps up with strength and cardio workouts in his home gyms and when traveling. “I can usually find a gym somewhere, making it relatively easy to maintain some form of training,” he said. “At the minimum, I can always do certain exercises in my hotel room.” A few years ago, recovery from rotator cuff surgery introduced him to yoga, and he’s been a fan ever since. He favors Bikram Yoga, which he practices at Detroit Bikram in Farmington Hills, Mich., but he also does Ashtanga yoga. “Yoga is amazing to combine with strength training,” he said, adding that it's absolutely necessary for flexibility. “The benefits of combining yoga with strength training for my overall general health and well-being are immeasurable,” he said. “I feel great, and at my age, am able to keep up with my busy schedule and play volleyball and other sports I still enjoy.” It’s only Scaglione’s life story that betrays his age. Born in 1939, the New Jersey native can reminisce with the best about an all-American childhood on the heels of the Great Depression and Second World War. You can picture it Catholic school nuns, hard-working par-

ents, errands for mom to the corner store, knowing the neighbors with the cookies and those whose grass you had to keep off, squeaking through high school (because he was too busy earning money), and the satisfaction of buying his first car – a 1956 Olds Ninety-Eight convertible with a Continental kit. So even after you hear the stories and imagine him as a kid on the set of Ozzie and Harriet, when he’s standing in front of you, it’s hard to connect the dots and get that this guy is closing in on 75. At 30, with a doctorate in mechanical engineering, Scaglione had a career epiphany of sorts. He had been teaching college courses and researching for a NASA Mars exploration program at Detroit’s Wayne State University, when government funding shifted from space to defense. His passion for his work changed, so he decided he’d follow suit and change careers. With a leap of faith and a little experience (he worked at a cousin’s art gallery as a teen), he mortgaged his house and in 1969 opened Park West Gallery in Michigan. That original 900-square-foot space is not far from where the current 63,000-squarefoot Greco-Roman style gallery sits

“My greatest challenge isn't motivating Albert to work out, it's getting him to stop," Beck laughed. He adjusts the workout depending on Scaglione’s travel schedule, making sure muscles have adequate rest and recovery time. “Albert does much of the same workout I use to train some of the NFL players I work with. He’s in great shape,” Beck said. “Albert always gives me entrepreneur-to-entrepreneur advice,” Beck said. He said he appreciates the questions Scaglione asks, offering Beck a mental workout. “He makes me think more, and makes me a better person because he’s inspiring,” said Beck. “He’s the type of person I’d like to be when I’m his age.” 40 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

THE PROWLER: Albert pushes the lead-weighted prowler through an outdoor course. Beck said he likes a circuit to be functional. “The prowler gives you the opportunity to gain real strength, working the muscles you may actually use in life,” he said. The prowler also offers a combination of cardio and strength training.

SPIRITUAL, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL COALITION

Albert and Peter Max

today. (Park West Gallery also has a gallery and 181,000-square-foot, business, framing and distribution center in Miami Lakes, Florida.) Within just a few short years, the charismatic Scaglione established relationships with prominent artists, including the father of kinetic art, Yaacov Agam, and pop art icon, Peter Max. Scaglione took his concept of holding fine art auctions regionally, then nationally, then eventually to the world. Park West Gallery now sells art at hundreds of locations worldwide on cruise ships and at exclusive hotels.

Scaglione’s passion for his faith, family and work motivate him to keep fitness right near the top of his daily todo list. He starts his day with an hour of prayer, and then he exercises before tackling the day. “It is the total spiritual, physical and mental coalition that really makes it all work,” he says. His advice to others? “Mental discipline and a consistent steady routine, and when things are not going right or you're not completely consistent, don't give up. Go right back at it,” he said. “The benefits of a better quality of life are priceless.”

SUMMER SKIN Living in sun land, how can we get our precious Vitamin D without incurring melanomas or sun spots? How can we avoid reaping sun damage from all those childhood sunburns? If I'm tanning beautifully now as a twenty year old, does this mean that by age forty I will have premature leathery skin with dark spots? These are questions that apply to sun lovers of all ages, so we need answers. Yes, it is a cruel truth that we mid-agers often have sun damage lurking under the dermal surface especially those of us

42 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

who got the tanning bug in the nineteen-fifties and sixties before sunscreen had been invented. The reason that our skin accumulates damage showing up later is that, as we grow older, our cellular reproduction begins to literally “make mistakes.” The body often creates nonfunctional cells and these sometimes interfere with other normal cellular processes. Abnormal cancerous processes are especially common in skin tissue as our ozone layer declines and exposes us to a more penetrating sun blast. Our wonderful sun is not the enemy;

but our protective mantle is dwindling. The skin is the first to receive the impact of city pollutants, but as an active detox organ, it also handles toxins from inside trying to get out. So if the other detox organs like the lungs and intestines are not functioning adequately, then toxins will exit through the skin, leaving pimples, brown spots, rashes and other unattractive flotsam on our skin. Therefore it is critical that we maintain a good diet, free of processed foods, free of soda—diet or otherwise—and free of sugar. Sugar lowers our immunity and encourages inflammation which can show up on the skin as well as in our muscles, joints and organs. So we must avoid processed food and pollutants, along with excessive exposure to our mighty sun. Even if June gloom or the coastal marine layer seem to block the sunshine, the dangerous ultraviolet rays still come through. So apply generous sunscreen several times a day. Remember its active ingredients break down and deteriorate over time so check the expiration date. Although SPF 30 gives more protection than SPF 10 or SPF 15, anything above SPF 30 only provides a small increase in protection. Once protected, we can take a moment to reappraise our relationship with the sun as our life giver, our benefactor, our source of energy. If we bask in its warmth. Connect with the sun and let it feed you in a personal celebration of light. We need to open our own solar plexus and make sure that our personal sun is radiating fully. Just remember the sunscreen!

MOTIVATIONS

EXTRACT FROM THE FALL OF THE HUMAN INTELLECT BY A. PARTHASARATHY

THE TWO MOTIVATIONS

Human desires manifest as two powerful motivations in life – acquisition and enjoyment. You want to acquire whatever you desire from the world. And after acquiring you long to enjoy what you have acquired. You build a house and enjoy living in it. You prepare a tennis court and enjoy playing the game. Etcetera. Propelled by these two motivations every human being craves to acquire and enjoy more and more in the world. He consumes his entire life chasing images of happiness. None has found true happiness in mere acquisition or enjoyment. Yet the chase never ends. People are ultimately exhausted with their futile efforts and become frustrated and unhappy. From the very beginning of life the mind has a tendency to acquire the wealth of the world. Yet it cannot qualify or quantify what it wants. Even in the present, when the mind acquires the object of its desire it forthwith pitches up something else. This thirst for acquisition continues. The wealthiest man in the world wants more wealth. The most powerful seeks more power. The most beautiful more beauty. Human beings face a real problem in their minds’ insatiable desire to acquire, aggrandise and the consequent agitation and frustration. The thirst can never be quenched by sheer acquisition of whatever the mind demands. Neither can the problem be solved by suppressing the desire for acquisition. In fact, there is no taboo to acquisition. You are 44 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

advised only to control, regulate the mind’s indiscriminate craving for acquisition. The second motivation is the desire to enjoy what has been acquired. Here again, there is no objection to enjoyment. You are not to refrain from enjoying what the world offers you but to restrain, control your indulgence in them. The unrestricted craving for enjoyment agitates the mind and ruins your peace. You suffer. Also, you enjoy objects or beings only when you exercise voluntary regulation and moderation. If however you do not exercise control and plunge into indiscreet indulgence in sensual enjoyment you lose the charm of it. You cannot enjoy it anymore. Unrestricted indulgence kills the enjoyment that you seek. In truth there is no joy content in the objects and beings of the world. But it is extremely difficult, nay impossible to convince the layperson that the world cannot provide the enjoyment he seeks from it. He goes to an ice-cream parlour and orders Belgian chocolate. He enjoys it. How can he be convinced that there is no joy content in it? Yet the truth remains that none can find enjoyment in the external world. The following example can perhaps help you examine the veracity of the statement. You sit outside in your garden on a full moon night. You ‘enjoy’ the beautiful moonlight Just think. Does the moon actually produce light? Does it have light in it per se? No, not at all. Yet some believe that the light comes from the moon. Educated as you are, you know that there is no light in the moon. Whatever arguments you put forth, the ignoramuses can never accept that there is no light in the moon. They see the light coming from the moon. They experience it. They enjoy it. So it becomes impossible for them to conceive that the moon has no light in it. Similarly, the masses lack the wisdom to accept the truth that there is no joy content in the world. Their argument is similar. They can perceive the joy in the sense-objects. And argue that they gain enjoyment out of them. Hence they can never accept there is no joy in the external world. You may likewise hold on to your views but just ponder over the moonlight example. KUNDALINI YOGA WRITTEN BY DHARMA DEVI

The Western world was introduced to Kundalini yoga in 1969 when Harbhajan Singh Yogi, also known as Siri Singh Sahib or Yogi Bhajan, brought the practice to the U.S. Yogi Bhajan was a Sikh from India, a spiritual Leader, and a Yoga Master since the age of 16. When he arrived in the U.S., he understood immediately the urgency of sharing the ancient teachings of Kundalini yoga with the rest of the world. He dedicated almost 40 years of his life to teach, uplift, and inspire people all over the world. Yogi Bhajan left this planet in 2004 and left behind a great lineage of teachings. Kundalini yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, has its roots in the ancient tradition of Raj yoga. For many centuries Raj yoga had been secretly practiced by only kings and warriors. It is a very powerful practice, and by including all the elements of yoga, it is one of the most complete yoga techniques known today. It is said that what you can achieve with 12 years of Hatha yoga, will only take 6 years with Kundalini yoga. The truth is that by practicing Kundalini yoga with discipline and devotion, you can rapidly achieve great benefits for your entire being: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Kundalini is based on 46 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

a very simple principle that Yogi Bhajan has defined as the “Principle of angles and triangles.” This principle is based on the concept that our magnetic field has a certain alignment, which may or may not be in harmony with the surrounding environment. Kundalini yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, works to re-create the correct alignment of the frequencies of our magnetic field by assuming specific postures of the body so that we may create harmony and balance in our lives. What makes Kundalini yoga so special is that each class is different, and it is precisely designed to develop a specific effect. In fact, every class is focused on a specific topic that can range from the highest spiritual goal to the most important physical pursuit. Every time we practice Kundalini yoga, our entire being benefits from it, bringing health back into our lives at all levels.

Kundalini yoga includes chants (mantra), breathing (pranayama), a combination of dynamic or still postures (asana), hand postures (mudras), and eye concentration (drishti). Often all are present in one single exercise. This is what makes Kundalini yoga different and more powerful then other types of yoga, because all of these components make it complete. Such was the ancient way of yoga. Chants in Kundalini yoga are conducted thoughout the class, from the beginning to the end, often in Gurmukhi, the sacred language of the Sikh, although sometimes in English. It is this devotional component of a

Kundalini yoga class that makes it a spiritual practice and not simply a good physical workout. Some Kundalini yoga instructors have embraced the Sikh religion as their own religious practice; however, it is not required to be a Sikh to practice and benefit from Kundalini yoga. In fact, yoga has always been intended as a spiritual practice and not as a religious one, making it very easy for people from other belief systems to practice Kundalini yoga. “We wear white clothes and cover our heads when we teach, to remind ourselves of the purity of the teachings and to share them with humility and respect.”

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

By Samantha, Briana, Olivia, Victoria & Rudy Ibrara (Dad)

Happy Father's Day to all of you Dads out there, but, we want to give a big huge thank you to our Dad!

As I was reading my daughters’ collective thoughts I realized how blessed I am to be able to give them a life I wished I’d had. What they don't know is that I had an unfortunate upbringing. I had an absent Dad growing up. And without that role model, I made some thoughtless choices that led me to a dark path. Many had written my life off but God had different plans for me. As newlyweds, my wife and I surrendered our lives to Him. That decision gave me the strength to give up the drink and all that comes with it. I didn't want that for my girls. Since then God has blessed me with a healthy marriage and 4 beautiful girls. Life is good!

Our Dad is awesome for many reasons. He is always there for us in times that are great or small and he always try to solve our problems. He is always a very hard working Dad. He wakes up at around 5 every day to work. Then after a hard day at work, he still comes home ready and willing to do anything we need him to do. Whether it’s picking us up from school, helping us with homework, or even an evening walk. He makes us all feel so warm and comforted inside… One of the best things about my Dad is that whenever we are in some rough or tough moments; he's always there to tell us that everything is going to be okay. He is also the best motivator, especially when it comes to fishing. ”Don't give up, you can do it, keep trying, you'll catch one soon”, he says all the time when we are on his "Banana Boat" AKA ‘yellow kayak’. If you haven't noticed, he loves fishing. Our Dad also has a great sense of humor. Here is an example: One cold day we were enjoying some cookies and hot chocolate and I sipped my hot chocolate and I burned my tongue. Right after that I hear him say, "Careful, it's hot." He also likes to watch basketball with a bowl of ice cream. He doesn't let us have any of his favorite Chip Ahoy ice cream, which is a bummer, but I understand. He let’s us try it a couple times but mostly doesn't share it. One time we couldn’t help ourselves and we finished his ice cream. When he came home he said “Hey, who finished my ice cream?", and we all started giggling, and he just laughed about it. And that's not even half of what is so special about our Dad. We love you Dad, Samantha, Briana, Olivia & Victoria

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT STERLING

THE GREAT GREEK PHILOSOPHER, SOCRATES, SAID, “THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING,” SO LET’S GET ON WITH IT. SOMEWHERE, IN THE DARK RECESSES OF THE SOON-TO-BE-DEPOSED LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS OWNER, DONALD STERLING’S STATEMENTS ARE A TOXIC NOTION OF RACIAL ORDER. HOW HE CAME TO THESE RACIST CONCLUSIONS IS THE SUBJECT FOR HIS PSYCHIATRIST; THAT HIS FEELINGS ARE NOW PUBLIC IS MIND-BOGGLING. IN THIS DAY OF BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT, I’M SURE THAT MOST HIGH-VISIBILITY FOLKS CAREFULLY GUARD THEIR PREJUDICES. STERLING’S RECENT RACIAL REVELATIONS JOLTED US. FROM THE BARRAGE OF WELL-PLANTED NEWSPAPER ADS, WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THAT DONALD “THE DON” WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST HUMANITARIANS AND PHILANTHROPISTS SINCE JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER. BUT, OBVIOUSLY, ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT STERLING. AS THE VOICE OF THE OLD “THE SHADOW” RADIO PROGRAM USED TO ASK, “WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN?” When the story broke, as a 10-year veteran NBA player and former Clipper television analyst, I immediately focused on how it would affect the team. After decades of being an NBA doormat, the Clippers have emerged as a respected contender for the league championship. Would this be a blow that would destroy all of the progress that has been made? And what about the long-suffering loyal Clippers fans who now enjoy the spotlight of success and newfound respectability? On Tuesday, April 29, the nation awaited new NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s pronouncement on the Sterling caper. The verdict was unanimous; Sterling was banned for life from owning an NBA team. I sprang into action, dusted off my tape recorder and digital camera, and headed downtown to Chick Hearn Way and the Staples Center. I wanted to mingle with the fans and capture some of their reactions. I expected to find hordes of pre-game people, out of control, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. Instead, the throngs were striding with measured pride displaying ‘No Bigots Allowed’ signs and wearing anti-racism Tshirts – all anxious to express their disdain for Sterling’s plantation mentality statements. Anthony Wayne Ford said the story is bigger than Sterling. He salutes former Clippers Vice President, Elgin Baylor, for bringing the racial issue to the forefront. Ford chastised the Los Angeles/Hollywood chapter of the NAACP for even thinking about giving Sterling a Lifetime Achievement Award. He walked away singing: Money can’t buy you love. Decked out in an outlandish red and blue outfit with shoes and hat to match was “Clipper Darrell.” The 22-year loyalist was all charged up about the team’s success. “ When”, he asked, “have you ever been able to say the words Clippers and Championship in one sentence? Let the NBA deal with Donald Sterling and

48 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

his racism, and let the fans come together as one and cheer the team on to victory.” He hurried into Staples Center urging the crowd to join him in chanting Championship! Championship! Championship! I pressed on and encountered veteran broadcaster, Tony Cox, who also ‘took the high road.’ He feels that in spite of Sterling’s heartfelt racism, the Clippers have to look past him towards a greater glory. I was touched by the comments of Dr. Harold Johnson and his wife who were there to witness a landmark victory and to celebrate the NBA’s positive stand. “Racism”, they said, “continues on today and every time that monster raises its head, hopefully it will be decapitated.” When I was the Lakers first round draft choice back in 1959 (time flies when you’re making progress), there were only eight NBA teams and 96 players. Only 24 of them were men of color. Today there are 30 league teams with over 400 players; 70% of whom are African American. I can remember when there was a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ among NBA owners that no more than three Black players could be on any team’s roster. Can you imagine the National shock when the Boston Celtics, coached by Red Auerbach, upped the ante to five Blacks and startled them all? Gentlemen, take a bow: Bill Russell, “Satch” Sanders, Willie Naulls, Sam Jones and K.C. Jones. We’ve come a long way, baby. This closing comment from my personal soapbox: We Angelinos live in the most ethnically diverse city in the history of the world and we have no choice but to honestly deal with it. I’m sure that most of us in this community can say, “Some of my best friends are __________.” I leave you with these words from the Buffalo Springfield’s recorded hit, ‘For What it’s Worth’, “…it’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound? Everybody look -- what’s going down!”

“A 30 TO 60 MINUTE BRISK LEASHED WALK MAY ALLOW YOUR PET SUFFICIENT EXERCISE TO KEEP THEM HAPPY.”

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER

EXERCISE YOUR WAY TO BEING A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER.

50 MC JUNE.JULY 2014

TODAY THE MOST EXERCISE PETS GET IS DAILY EXERCISE TO BECOMING A COUCH POTATO. EVEN SMALLER BREEDS DO NOT GET ENOUGH EXERCISE INSIDE THE HOUSE. TODAY’S MOBILE DEVICES ARE DISTRACTING. I TOO AM GUILTY OF PUTTING MY PETS NEED FOR EXERCISE AT THE BOTTOM OF MY TO DO LIST. HERE IS A LITTLE FRIENDLY REMINDER ON WHY AND HOW TO EXERCISE YOUR WAY BACK TO BEING A RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER. Not getting enough exercise can result in destructive behavior, depression, overweight, and of health issues such us diabetes, respiratory disease and heart disease. It can also aggravate orthopedic issues such as hip dysplasia and arthritis. Obesity can put stress on joints, ligaments and tendons. A 30 to 60 minute brisk leashed walk may allow your pet sufficient exercise to keep them happy. Keep in mind the amount of exercise is dependant on your dog’s age, breed and health. Generally if your dog has slowed down by the time you stop that generally means that its sufficient exercise. If you are not sure how much exercise your pet

needs contact your vet for independent advice. A tired dog is a happy dog. In order to exercise safely following local ordinances is helpful. If your dog plays well with others the dog park is a great place to socialize and play. Doggie day care can provide exercise for both mind and body. To enjoy the outdoors safely provide your dog with the proper on/off leash obedience training. In Malibu you may run into a rattlesnake. “If you want your pet (and you!) to have the fullest life possible with lots of outdoor adventures without a huge risk of injury from a venomous snake, rattle snake avoidance training is available,” says Gina Cables with Ma & Paw Kennel Training Services (www.manpaw.com). Providing preventative health care is crucial to enjoying the quality time you spend with your pet, stay on top of vaccinations and parasite control. MALIBU REAL ESTATE

The Spanish Estate at MariSolMalibu. www.MariSolMalibu.com

BUYING RIGHT, AND STAYING POWER, ARE KEY, AND IN THE MEANTIME WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO ENJOY. LONG TIME LOCALS, NEWCOMERS, AND FOREIGN INVESTORS ALIKE, ARE ALL WELL AWARE OF THE VALUE OF MALIBU REAL ESTATE. AND THEY ARE BUYING AGAIN OR WISH THEY HAD BOUGHT MORE WHEN THEY DID. But, what drives the Malibu market….is it the weather, a growing California population, the beaches, our proximity to Los Angeles, the local schools, Hollywood, political stability, the vacation home market, etc? Undoubtedly, it’s a combination of these and many other factors. But one that is sometimes overlooked is the very theme of this magazine’s issue – outdoor fun! Quite simply Malibu is a really fun place to live, especially if you like being outdoors. Where else in the world can you wake up and start the day off surfing with whales before heading out to work. Then, after a long day at the office, retreat back to Malibu and get in a daily dose of cardio by running the beach or hiking in

the mountains. Afterward, enjoy a farm to table dinner with a good wine from a local vineyard. And, at the end of the day, relax in the hot tub under the stars before falling asleep to the sound of waves and the sea breeze. Sounds dreamy, but actually it’s just part of the everyday reality in Malibu….where “living the dream” is truly possible. Perhaps that is why those with means and/or a burning desire will continue to aspire to live in Malibu. It’s just too good of a place not to. And it’s never too late, too much, or the wrong time. In fact, if history proves right, then prices will only continue to rise over the long term, interest rates have hardly ever been better, and we see great deals come up all the time. It’s just a matter of being ready when they do. So, if making a smart investment, in a beautiful location, with the added bonus of countless opportunities for outdoor adventure makes sense to you, then Malibu might just be the perfect spot for you and your family. For help making that great deal, give Mark a call at (310) 317-8202.

I

HAD THE CHANCE TO HELP MY DAD OUT OF A TRICKY SITUATION THE OTHER DAY. HE HAD BEEN DOING IT FOR ME MY WHOLE LIFE, SO I WELCOMED THE OPPORTUNITY. WHILE I HAD PLANNED ON SEEING HIM, I WASN’T SURE WHERE THE MEETING WOULD TAKE PLACE. As it turned out, it was in the lobby of a New York theatre, minutes before curtain. As I approached, my dad was talking to two women, one of whom had a walker. His face lit up when he saw me. “Well, I’ll be damned! Am I ever glad to see you!” The ladies moved away, and I sat down beside him. I started to say something, but he motioned that he needed to talk right away. “Listen. Do you have any money on you? I am in a heck of a fix. I’ve got ten prospective clients arriving for this show, and Nolte, the horse’s ass, hasn’t shown up with the ticket money.” The Nolte he was referring to was my Godfather and Daddy’s best friend from prep school and Princeton. “I didn’t mind this stuff in college, but this is going too far. What am I supposed to do? He’s leaving me holding the bag again. Damn him! He’s the fancy lawyer. I’m just a poor sales schmuck. These people will be here any minute, expecting to see this show!” His agitation was intense, and I could tell he had exhausted all avenues of escape. For once, I had the answer. “Relax! Everything is already paid for.” That stopped him cold. Relief and disbelief engulfed him with equal speed. “How is that possible?” “Everything here is paid in advance: tickets, drinks, food. You name it, it’s paid for. They won’t even accept money. Look around. Do you see anyone using cash?” He surveyed the room and looked back at me with a big smile. “Well, I’ll be damned! How did this happen?” “You did it, Daddy. You were real clever and handled things real well. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. Isn’t that great?” He let that thought sink in, and, as it did, the lobby walls started to fade, and we were sitting in the green room of Woodbury Terrace. The two ladies seen earlier returned and again asked my father if he were ready to use the restroom. He said, “Yes,” and pulled himself up to the walker. As they led him towards the hall, he paused and turned to me. Shyly, he asked, “Are we related?” “Yes. I’m your daughter.” He seemed pleased at the idea.

IST. G.INS LOVIN TORY. . VIC ERED W EMPO

LIFEstyle

Learning to L.I.V.E Loving yourself is the simplest recipe that makes you… Insist on Freedom. The only way to be truly free is by gaining… Victory over victim syndrome. Once you hone that trait, what you have is an… Empowered YOU!

“Abusing someone is wrong; accepting abuse is worse.” -Mahatma Gandhi

Do you know that you were born as good as anyone else? Well, you were. No one has the right to make you feel afraid or to make you feel bad about yourself. You need to own that and accept nothing less. One sure way to end the cycle of abuse is to stop being a victim. If you know that you have done everything you could to change him, but he won’t change, you need to look at the alternative. I know it is important for most women to keep giving and forgiving the people they love, but you must stop trying to change him. Change yourself. Stop asking him to not hurt you. Stop accepting the hurt. You can’t blame anyone for not caring about you, if you don’t care about yourself.

If you can’t change him, change the situation. If you can’t change the situation, get out of the situation. Either way, you must make sure that no one hurts you or makes you feel bad about yourself. You deserve to be happy all the time! -Veera
