Spear-It 5K to honor Ryan Walsworth

A number of changes are in store for the National Asparagus Festival's annual 5k run/walk this year. Formerly known as the Spear-It 5K Run/Walk, the run now in its 28th year, will be known as the The Ryan Walsworth Spear It 5K. in honor of the late Ryan Walsworth of Mears. “We wanted to honor Ryan’s commitment to not only the festival but to the asparagus and agricultural industries and felt this would be a great way to do that,” race coordinator Michele Amstutz said. “Ryan and Golden Stock Farms has supplied the asparagus for events during the National Asparagus Festival, including the 5K and the Taste of Asparagus. He always without hesitation was willing to contribute to the festival anyway he could so dedicating the Spear It 5K was the least we could do to honor him,” she said. The Ryan Walsworth Spear-It 5K

will take place in Silver Lake Saturday, June 10. Participants will be treated to a breathtaking view of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes as they complete the multi-faceted course. The run starts at 9 a.m. in front of the Dune Town Mall, where the finish line also will be

located. The day of registration fee is $23 and for those planning to walk the course will be an $18 fee. Those interesgted in saving $3 on their registration fee can pre-regisgter online at www.goracego.com/search/event. aspx?id=40221. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. All pre-registered participants will receive a 2017 Spear-It 5K T-shirt, while same day registrants will only receive a T-shirt on a firstcome, first-served basis. Another new feature to the run is a costume contest. The runner or walker who dresses with “The Most Spear – It” will be awarded a trophy, free entry in the 2018 Spear-It 5K , plus two tickets to the NAF’s Taste of Asparagus as well as the NAF’s Entertainment Tent during this year’s festival. Judging will take place prior to the run so organizers ask that any-

one with a costume be prepared to be judged by 8:30 a.m. The winner will be announced post-race. EnerG Fitness of New Era will be on site again this year to offer a free prerace workout to help get the runners warmed up and pumped up for the run. Following the run don’t miss your chance to visit the 2018 Asparagus Queen and Runner Up who will be

distributing water to runners at the finish line and will distributed asparagus to runners during the awards ceremony. Event sponsor for the The Ryan Walsworth Spear It 5K is Hometown Pharmacy and the race’s asparagus donor is New Era’s American Asparagus – Caleb Coulter of New Era.
