Maritime and logistics education and training

The Maritime Academy, based in IJmuiden, Amsterdam and several other Dutch ports, was established over a century ago, making it one of the oldest maritime training institutes in the Netherlands. Today the Academy is geared to prepare people for all modern functions at sea and in the ports. The training and education programmes range from professional seafarers and fisherman to inland waterway navigation and cargo handling. Courses are available at all levels, from operational port functions to schooling for waterway sailors and ship’s mates. Training is focussed on the practical side and given by highly experienced instructors using modern equipment such as training ships and advanced simulators.

msterdam Seaports is well aware that proper education and good training is the only means of being assured of a skilled and reliable labour force. The high standards of the Amsterdam work force, its skill and motivation are the result of the excellent maritime educational facilities which train people for a wide variety of jobs in the transport industry, at sea and ashore.

As the maritime sector is constantly changing and new developments come thick and fast, good staff training is vital for companies in this sector. The Academy’s lecturers and instructors are highly qualified and experienced. A regular vocational training program is provided relating to ports, shipping, fisheries, Rhine and inland shipping. The Academy also offers a wide range of international complementary training courses that are geared to current developments in the maritime industry. In close consultation with its customers, the Maritime Academy organises courses that correspond precisely to companies’ specific needs and are given by instructors from the maritime sector and the academy’s own permanent staff. In 2011, some 3,000 students from around the world participated in these vocational courses. Contract education by the Academy is ISO and CEDEO-certified. Some courses are held on board the vessel of the participants in order to best simulate difficult situations. The Academy also offers an international course in disaster management and rescue work at sea for professionals from all over the world, including Port Facility Security Officer, Ship Sanitation and basic and advanced courses for VTS operators. www.maritieme-academie.nl
