Each year, the July issue brings our annual “Fun in the Summer Sun” guide, in which we highlight some of the varied and exciting activities that are available on and around the island during our beautiful summer season. Putting together this issue always makes it difficult for us to remain stretched out on our beach chairs (or the couch) because we are reminded once more of all the fun things to do around Amelia Island, which our summer visitors are enjoying, and we want to get in on the fun, too! We don’t like to admit it, but for a large chunk of the year, as we grapple with the responsibilities of work, family, church, children’s activities, and so forth, we sometimes forget that we live with a beautiful, unspoiled Atlantic beach on one side of us and the lovely Amelia River, with its intriguing and ever-changing marsh ecosystem, on the other. That’s why we always commit in the warm summer months to getting out on the water in some fashion. We can all hardly wait to throw aside the routine of the other three seasons and start kayaking, surfing, fishing, cruising, any good reason to inject something out of the ordinary into our lives. We’re ready to take a river cruise, enjoy a sailing trip from the marina, jump into a kayak—it doesn’t matter how we do it, we just want to be on the water! That’s our summer homework. Of course, if you prefer keeping your feet planted firmly on the ground, there’s still plenty of fun things to do. Jump on a Segway, bike off the south end of the island, saddle up for some equestrian fun, or grab your tennis racquet or golf clubs. There are a lot of very good reasons that people come from all over the Southeast to enjoy our island paradise in the summer, so enjoy—whether you live here or you’re here for a much-needed beach vacation. Of course, we don’t want you to get so busy chasing new adventures that you forget to enjoy a quiet walk on the beach or find a good book to read. And while you’re kicking back, we hope you’ll enjoy the rest of this month’s Islander, which includes an article on the new Gills Club for young girls interested in sharks and marine science; a feature on a fourth-generation Fernandina family that returned from Alaska to begin a new adventure here; another one of the “Great Homes of Fernandina” with Dickie Anderson; a “Backyard Adventure” on backwater fishing with Terry Lacoss; an “Eating Scene” review of The Crab Trap; and much more.

Fun in the Summer Sun

GUIDE

2016

BY KAREN MILLER

At long last, summer is here! School is out, vacations have begun, and the endless stream of various committee meetings has dwindled away until the fall. Here on Amelia Island, lots of local businesses have a myriad of activities geared specifically to those of us who love to summer here. No matter what your interests are, you can always find something new and exciting to occupy these long, warm, and beautiful summer days. At this time of the year, many of us secretly hope that our lawnmowers will break down. It’s time of the year when we turn off the television, put away our computers, and head out to the beach, the golf course, and our award-winning state parks. When most of Florida is suffering with summer’s high temperatures, Amelia Island is the place where even Southerners seek respite from the heat. Children are building sandcastles, and colorful beach umbrellas brighten the shoreline. It is July, one of our favorite times of the year!

LIFE IS BETTER ON A BOAT For a relaxing excursion with family and friends, come aboard Amelia River Cruises (904-261-9972) for an inspiring experience that takes you along salt marshes, wilderness beaches, and historic river banks. Get a glimpse of dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, egrets, spoonbills, and ospreys all professionally narrated by local history and nature experts. Amelia Boat Club (904-572-3216) provides a variety of boats, gear, and boating accessories so that its members

can maximize their time on the water. In addition, they also rent boats and waverunners to non-members. Select a boat from their fleet and leave your cares on shore! Or, be the captain of your own adventure on a jet ski tour of Amelia and Cumberland Island waters with Flying Fish Adventures (904-770-4660), which offers eco-tours at the speed of fun! Look out for an array of Florida’s wildlife as you speed your way through our local waters. Flying Fish now offers rentals, too (904-310-5999).

Amelia Island Kayak Excursions (904-557-5307) is a family owned and operated kayaking business offering a variety of guided eco-tours to help you get off the beaten path while exploring the scenic waterways on and near Amelia Island. They offer tours of all experience levels for families or groups. Have you considered trying your hand at sailing? Whether you want to learn how to sail or just enjoy some relaxing time on the water with family and friends, Windward Sailing (904-327-3265) makes it fun and easy with sailing excursions, overnight trips, and sailing lessons. Or if angling is your passion, join Captain Terry Lacoss at Amelia Angler (904-261-2870) for the best in sport fishing, boating, sailing, and sightseeing opportunities, for groups, families, and even hardcore “big game” anglers.

THE PATH LESS TRAVELED John Muir once said, “Of the many paths you take in life, make sure that a few of them are dirt.” Here on Amelia Island, our favorite paths are paved with sand, and our local beach parks provide people of all ages access to a spectacular shoreline

and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But there are lots of other paths you can take throughout the island, too. Egans Creek Greenway, with its grass-covered paths, serve as a network of trails that are suitable for walking and bicycling, and its environment exhibits a variety of natural wildlife and vegetation. Local wildlife, such as alligators, snakes, bobcats, and many birds, may be enjoyed from a distance. Friends of the Amelia Island Trail have completed a bike path that covers over seven miles, between Peters Point County Park to the south end of the George Crady Bridge Fishing Pier State Park, where it connects to Big Talbot Island. The trail takes advantage of the tree canopy alongside A1A so that much of the trail is shaded and shielded from the wind. A map of the trail can be found at www.ameliaislandtrail.org. Golden Isles Riding Academy (912-506-3325) is a family-oriented premier equestrian center, conveniently located off Highway 82 in Brunswick, Georgia, on 50 beautiful acres. OSPREY VILLAGE NAMES SILVER PEN SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

AMERICAN BEACH WELCOMES HIGHWAYMEN ARTIST JAMES GIBSON On May 28, the American Beach Museum, as part of its “Conversation Series,” hosted Highwaymen artist James Gibson. A landscape painter whose work has been displayed in the Florida Supreme Court and recognized by the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, Gibson is one of the most active Highwayman painters, and perhaps the most successful. Gibson’s program featured the history of the Highwaymen artists, his own artistic journey, and the Florida’s unique legacy through his skill as a talented storyteller. The Highwaymen artists are a group of 26 African American landscape artists in Florida. Self-taught and selfmentoring, they created a body of work of over 200,000 paintings from the mid1950s through the 1980s. The artists used oil-based paints and painted on Upson board (a roof sheeting product), and then framed the artwork with crown molding. They sold the artwork door-todoor or out of their car trunks, mostly along A1A and U.S. 1 on Florida’s east coast from Daytona Beach to Miami. The American Beach Conversation Series also included a special tribute to the late Bill Jennings and the unveiling of an original work of art by Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair, donated in his honor by the Orlando International Airport.

Osprey Village, the Amelia Island retirement community, recently awarded $3,750 in scholarship prizes to four winners of their Silver Pen Writing Competition. Members of the retirement community consisting of retired business professionals, educators, and community leaders chose the winners. The 2016 winners are Palmer Alvarez, First Place, ($1,500) Amelia Beasley, Second Place, ($1,000) Renee Cacciapouti, Third Place, ($750) and Chloe Meierdierck, Fourth Place ($500). “Our members eagerly anticipate The Silver Pen each year,” says Osprey Village’s Executive Director Dana Sargent. “The curated essay topic connects them to high school students in a way that builds mutual understanding and respect. We look forward to continuing to offer The Silver Pen in the coming years.” The scholarship program is open to high school seniors who live within 30 miles of the retirement community. Osprey Village started The Silver Pen Writing Competition in 2012 as a way to give back to the local community. The competition’s goal is to help students consider viewpoints of multiple generations through writing on topics relating to older and younger generations.

ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS TO PERFORM AT CARNEGIE HALL Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) have recently announced that Dr. Jane Lindberg and the Island Chamber Singers have been invited to participate in a performance of Francis Poulenc’s “Gloria” at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, February 19, 2017. The musicians will join with other choristers to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International. Dr. Erin Freeman will serve as conductor of the performance and clinician for the residency. Dr. Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and principal conductor for the DCINY states, “The Island Chamber Singers received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the dingers, as well as the exceptional quality of their audition recording.” COURTESY ISLAND CHAMBER SINGERS “We are very excited and cannot believe that we were invited to join with other singers to perform this wonderful work by Francis Poulenc,” says Lindberg. “We have 41 singers going, and 40 friends and family of ICS members. It never dawned on me when we started in 2004 that we would ever be in a position to receive an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall. We have grown musically and that is the exciting part!” For tickets, call (212) 707-8566, email BoxOffice@DCINY.org, or visit their website at www.DCINY.org.

he Pickers Market is located at the corner of North 2nd Street and Alachua Street in downtown Fernandina Beach. It is over 5,000 square feet of pure excitement! With over 50 dealers and consigners, you’re sure to find something you just can’t live without. It’s fun to walk around the store, looking at things you might have had as a child, or items your mother used to cook with, or things you’ve never seen before. When you walk into the shop, you are greeted by a beautiful old bar and a smiling face from one of the vendors working that day, along with complementary coffee, lemonade, and a plate of cookies. The Pickers Market opened on September 15, 2011, and it has continued to grow every year. Owner Nancy Rosenberg believes the store’s success is due to having the best dealers in the area. “They come from all over Florida and as far away as Atlanta, “says Nancy. “I’m proud of our shop and our vendors, and the word on the street is that The Pickers Market has the best prices on the island. We get compliments from people every day.” The Pickers Market

offers art and antiques, plus vintage finds and collectables in all styles, such as country French, shabby chic, industrial, farmhouse, primitive, architectural, beach, nautical, and wrought iron. And be sure to check out The Pickers Market outdoor area that’s devoted to all things garden and patio. “Every day you can find one of our awesome team members, all of whom are also vendors, behind the register, walking the sales floor, helping customers and their fellow dealers too,” says Nancy. “Rhonda Baine, one of our dealers, is responsible for our Facebook page. It’s so successful that we use it as our website.” Whatever you might be shopping for at The Pickers Market—furniture, gifts, or collectibles—you will find all of those things, along with much more. For more information, call (904) 4327048. “Like” their Facebook page and receive updates on their newest items. As they say at The Pickers Market, “See ya next time!” For more information, call (904) 432-7048 or visit their website at www.thepickersmarket.com.

ony Jones has always loved being on the water. He was introduced to sailing when he was a youngster, while visiting his grandparents who lived on a lake. His devotion to boating and fishing eventually prompted him to buy his first sailboat as a young adult. But it wasn’t until 2005 that he and his wife, Cindy, purchased their own sailing business, Windward Sailing. Windward has a long history in Fernandina Beach. The original business, called Sail Amelia, was opened by Ted Waas in 1988. With a sailing legacy of nearly 30 years, Jones and Windward Sailing are a perfect fit. “The thing I love most about this business is introducing people to sailing,” says Tony. “The tranquility of being on the ocean without a motor running is like nothing else. While sailing, you can even hear dolphins moving through the water. It’s amazing. And if you want to learn to sail, the American Sailing Association has awarded Windward Sailing its ‘Outstanding School of the Year’ Award.” Windward Sailing offers sailing lessons, certification training, private charters, day trips, sunset cruises, and overnight trips. “The sailing here is outstanding all year long,” says Jones. “On the beautiful waterways of Fernandina Beach, Cumberland Island, and the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll make wonderful memories on the water. Whether you want to learn to sail or just enjoy a relaxing time on the water with family and friends, Windward Sailing makes it fun and easy!” For more information, call (904) 327-3265 or visit www.windwardsailing.com.

In 1957, Dr. McClane built the office at its present location at 6 South 14th Street, and an adjoining home was built in 1964. In 1979, his son, Dr. John McClane III, joined the practice, followed by his nephews, Drs. Steve and Tony Stubits. “The home was turned into the office that is now Coastal Vision Center in 1987,” says Dr. Tony Stubits. “The building was expanded, and today we have 5,700 square feet with five examination rooms, ten employees, three doctors, and a full optical shop.” After a merger with Southeast Eye Associates in 2011 and the addition of J. Russell Stackhouse, M.D. in 2014, Coastal Vision Center now offers complete eye care, from eyeglass frame repair to the latest in laser-assisted cataract surgery and LASIK procedures. “We stay current with the latest equipment and techniques,” says Dr. Stubits. “Eyes are complicated and interesting organs. When we examine the eyes, we can find medical issues that a patient may not be aware of, like diabetes, which can cause blindness.” “We are committed to educating our patients and providing personalized eye care services,” says Dr. Stubits. “Our patients are like family to us—some of them have been coming here for 40 years. When we help them improve their vision, we improve the quality of their lives.” For more information, call (904)261-5741 or visit www.coastalvisioncenter.com.

—you may believe that shark science is a career only for men. I wanted to find a way to connect the two groups, and so the Gills Club was born!” Ella loved her Gills Club monthly newsletters so much that she begged her mom to start a Gills Club on Amelia Island. “We had our first Gills Club meeting in January this year,” Suzanne smiles. “It’s so neat to see how many girls express their love for the ocean and engage in Gills Club. Even those who were hesitant at first are eager to share something new they learned about sharks!” Last school year, the FBCA chapter hosted meetings and hip, young marine biologists taught the girls about the many shark species and the latest shark research. “They did such a great job bringing the science to the elementary level without sacrificing any scientific terminology or facts,” says Suzanne. The group of emerging young scientists found themselves with a special invitation in March when the 126foot M/V OCEARCH vessel made a visit to the Florida’s First Coast to study great white and tiger sharks off the Amelia Island shore. OCEARCH is a recognized world leader in generating critical scientific data related to tracking (telemetry) and biological studies of keystone marine species such as great white sharks, in conjunction with conservation outreach and education at a measurable global scale. Part of this includes STEM education for elementary students, and the FBCA Gills Club hopped on board with the research crew for just this purpose.

“The girls learned the purpose of expeditions and were given a chance at the work,” Suzanne explains. “In under 15 minutes, each team of students captured, on-boarded, and gathered biological samples from a mock-shark, as well as tagged it so it can be tracked using GPS.” Additionally, camera crews from the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week interviewed the students. Stay tuned this summer to see the FBCA Gills Girls! “The experience was truly fascinating!” says Suzanne. Each student left with her own STEM kit filled with a t-shirt, rubber and stuffed sharks, and a bundle of educational material to teach her family about sharks. Visit www.ocearch.org to learn more about the expeditions and track sharks in real-time off the Amelia Island coast. “By introducing young girls to STEM-based lessons in shark research, the Gills Club is equipping the next generation of ocean stewards and boosting their chances of entering a career in science,” Cynthia explains. Part of the Gills Club curriculum is inspiring an interest in local conservation. To this end, the FBCA chapter will host an end-of-summer beach clean-up on September 10 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Seaside Park. All are welcome. Additionally, FBCA Gills Club invites all young ladies in grades 1-6 who are interested in becoming marine biologists or who just love sharks to join their chapter. Contact mrsvacirca@ hotmail.com more information, and visit www.gillsclub.org to see what’s going on with the national Gills Club.

The energetic couple met at the College of Charleston in 1997, where Thomas would spend his weekends surfing and kayaking on the beach in front of Catherine’s home. After graduation, the couple lived in Asheville, North Carolina, where Catherine began her nursing career and Thomas started his marketing and film companies, Oliver Media Services, LLC and Filmmakers, Inc., discovering his passion for film production. In 2009, his film, Green River: On the Down Low, won first place for short films at the Amelia Island Film Festival. Thomas went on to direct, and, in 2010, release his feature film, Raven Fork. The subject of both films? Kayaking! Thomas’s success in filmmaking caught the eye of mainstream television producers, allowing the family, with their 2- and 4-year-old daughters, to accept an invitation to relocate to Sitka, Alaska in 2011. Thomas was the series producer for Coast Guard Alaska on The Weather Channel. This experience led to a resume full of television film work, including field producer for Animal Planet’s Backcountry Justice, director for Sportsman Channel’s Apex Predator, and wheel house producer of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.

IIn 2015, the h family f l felt f l the h itch h for f a new adventure. d A wish h to be near family and good schools, coupled with the flexibility of Thomas’s project-based work and Catherine’s career as a registered nurse, the family was headed to Florida. “We are a fourth-generation Fernandina Beach family,” says Thomas. “In the 1950’s, my grandfather, taken with the beauty of Amelia Island, moved his family to the island, and I am blessed to do the same.” “On June 9, 2015, we left Sitka on a ferry,” Catherine remembers, “but we didn’t make it to Amelia until July 1!” On the way, Amelia and Evie had “their best vacation ever” as they pitched their tent across the country. From Seattle to the Oregon Coast to California’s Redwood Forest, with a stop in Salt Lake City, a visit to Aztec ruins in New Mexico, and a reunion with Catherine’s sister in Telluride, it was a summer of memories. “When we made it to Amelia, life fell into place.” “As a family, we believe in Amelia Island,” says Thomas. “We support local business and want to contribute to a strong and healthy future for our home.” This conviction, paired with a love for the area that they want to share with others, inspired Catherine and Thomas to open Amelia Adventures, a familyowned and -operated boating and nature tour company. With Thomas’ 20-plus years of kayaking and guiding experience with an American Canoe Association level III coastal kayaking continued on page 75.

Merrick-Simmons House BY DICKIE ANDERSON • PHOTO BY JAN JOHANNES

ne of few remaining houses in Fernandina Beach’s Historic District built prior to the Civil War, the MerrickSimmons house is a two-and-a-half story house built in the Greek Revival style. It has floor-to-ceiling windows, three large porches with scroll brackets, and two porticos. Several prominent people have lived in the house. The most prominent was Chloe Merrick. Originally from Syracuse, New York, Merrick worked with Harriet Beecher Stowe and was an agent for the National Freedman’s Association. After the Civil War, eleven hundred freed slaves in Fernandina were badly in need of education and direction. She created a school and, eventually, an orphan’s asylum in the Joseph Finnegan House. Joseph Finnegan was an attorney, politician, lumber mill operator, slave owner, and railroad builder in Florida, but he is primarily known as the general who commanded the Confederate Army in its victory at the Battle of Oluste. General Finnegan returned to Fernandina after the war and, like many others, discovered his mansion had been seized by the Freedmen’s Bureau. Merrick utilized the large forty-room house for her orphanage and school. Finnegan eventually was able to recover the house through legal wrangling. It was bounded by South Eleven and Twelfth streets and

Broome and Calhoun streets, the site of the current Atlantic Elementary School. Merrick was recognized by John Hay, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State, for her outstanding work. She was described as “a lovely specimen of genuine philanthropy, the lady deserves credit for her self-denying labors.” She married Harrison Reed, who eventually became the eighth Governor of Florida. In 1863, Reed was appointed by President Lincoln to be tax commissioner in Florida, making him responsible for seized Confederate property. While working as Tax Commissioner, Reed traveled to Fernandina Beach on several occasions. He met Chloe Merrick on one visit and became very impressed with her. They were married in 1869 at Merrick’s home in Wilmington, North Carolina. They had one child. The next owner of the home was John Simmons, who owned the island’s ice plant. Considered a leader in the community along with Effingham Bailey and Louis Hirth, he owned the popular trolley line that ran across the island to the beach. Like many Victorian-era homes in the Historic District, the property became a rooming house until restored by Buff Gordan and Sally Dickinson. Through their efforts, the house is now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.

blushing blossoms As the humidity rises, hardy hyssops and hydrangeas offer intoxicating fragrance and dazzling color to your summer landscape. BY BETTY MORRELL

T

he weather is getting a bit sticky, which means that summer is really here. However, there are still beautiful plants which give wonderful color to your overheated gardens. In the last issue, I was writing about the Hyssops, so I will continue on that before I get into a beautiful, new hydrangea. Sonoran Sunset Anise Hyssop (Agastache cana “Sinning”) is a very pretty plant with an abundance of lavender/rose flowers. This is different from the typical purple-flowered plants of its species. “Agastache” is Greek for “many flower spikes,” and “cana” describes the plant’s gray foliage, which has a pleasant anise or licorice-like fragrance. Common name of this species includes Mosquito Plant, Texas Hummingbird Mint, and Double Bubble Mint. The trademark refers to the Sonoran Desert and the lovely sunset purples at end of the day in the plants native to the American Southwest. Aside from resisting drought, Sonoran Sunsets tolerate heat and cold. Put all of these characteristics together and you have a wonderful species that excels in semi-arid climates.

TIP O F T HE M O N T H Prune Incrediball Blush in early spring. If your shrub gets too large, prune to desired height in fall or early spring. Feed plants with a fertilizer high in phosphorus to encourage blooms.

Sonoran Sunset is a full-sun plant that is easy to grow, but requires excellent drainage. With the right conditions, you will be rewarded with the happy buzz of butterflies, hummingbirds, and honey bees. The plant reaches 40 to 48 inches with a spread of 24 inches wide, and its flower color and perfumed foliage are a perfect addition to any garden. The pleasing herbal-scented spikes have lavender-pink calyces with contrasting orange-pink corollas. This plant is longlived and will look great mixed with other contrasting perennials. Now to the new hydrangea called Incrediball Blush. This incredibly hardy hydrangea boasts clouds of huge blushing blossoms that will make a big impression in sunny borders and landscapes. Ideal for mass plantings,

51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • JULY 2016

creating a low hedge, or showing off a mixed border, this beauty grows up to five feet tall and blooms reliably even after a rough winter. The bouquet-ready blossoms age to a soft green and are as lovely in the garden as they are in vases. This plant can be grown in full sun or part shade, but for our area it is best if they get afternoon shade. Incrediball Blush is known as a smooth hydrangea. It grows four to five feet in height, so plant them five or six feet apart. Moist soils that don’t dry out are best, so avoid hot dry, exposed areas. Mulch to conserve moisture and mitigate hot temperatures. Powdery mildew can sometimes infect the foliage, especially in humid areas with poor circulation. Treat it with the appropriate fungicide if the problem is serious, and be sure to rake up and destroy all fallen foliage in the fall. Hydrangeas are at their best in summer and fall, a quiet time for most woody plants, and they are worth having for that reason alone. If you have any questions, you can email me at bamorrell@aol.com. In the meantime, Happy Gardening!

melia Island abounds with stories of residents whose parents first brought them to the island on vacation, which eventually leads them back years later as adults. Whether in a vacation home or a primary residence, the chance to recapture later in life the happy memories of childhood then creates new memories for the next generation. Blake Lisenby vacationed at Atlantis on Amelia as a young boy. Today, this lawyer has his own firm in Macon, Georgia— Lisenby and Associates—but he loves Amelia Island so much that he and his partner of 11 years, Shane Rogers, purchased a condominium at Amelia South last year. “One weekend, we decided to get away, and it had been a long time since we’d been to Amelia,” says Shane. “We stumbled upon the Amelia South condo and reached out to realtor Marcy Mock for a tour.” Before they knew it, the place was theirs, and they were ready to freshen up the dated baby blue and yellow palates of the décor.

“I remember the day they came into my shop for the first time,” says Robyn Branch of Robyn Branch Design. “We started talking, and they loved so many pieces in our inventory.” Shane confirms that he and Blake kept seeing the store, and then finally made it in one day. The trio hit it off immediately, and Robyn accepted an invitation to decorate their home in Macon, followed by the Amelia South condo. Most recently, Robyn is decorating the law firm’s new office. Robyn got to work on ideas for the condo with the budget she was presented. “We talked through email and photographs,” says Shane. Light cabinets were turned to dark cabinets, yellows and blues gave way to grays, purples, and teals, and bathrooms were transformed with LED-lighted mirrors. “I remember when we saw the finished project for the first time. It was late when we arrived, and Robyn had all

Crab Trap With homemade smoked fish dip, Apalachicola oysters, and delicious shrimp, The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for over 35 years. BY KAREN MILLER • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

T

he Crab Trap was the first restaurant I visited when I moved to Amelia Island, and it’s still the place I go when I’m craving great local shrimp. I recently invited my friend Jane to join me for lunch at The Crab Trap, and we both agreed that even locals feel like they’re on vacation while dining in one of Fernandina Beach’s most historic restaurants. The Germano family has owned and operated The Crab Trap for over 36 years, and as we walked through the door, we were greeted by Holly Germano, who started us off with their famous homemade smoked fish dip and crackers. The fish dip is extraordinarily delicious, well-seasoned, with the perfect amount of smoky flavor. While we were nibbling, The Crab Trap’s master mixologist, Edwin, surprised us with a Peach Mojito and a Mango Passion Daiquiri. The mojito was quite refreshing, bursting with fresh mint. The daiquiri was similar to a smoothie, thick and icy, and beautifully presented with swirls of fruity flavor. Holly suggested we try a sample platter of some of The Crab Trap’s most popular items, and how could we refuse? I love eating like this – a big plate of seafood shared with my friend. First, we started with shrimp – blackened, fried, grilled, and boiled, served with homemade tartar and cocktail sauces. Every bite was divine, and perfectly cooked. My favorite was the grilled shrimp, which was basted with a buttery sauce. Jane and I next tried the fried gator tail, which is marinated before frying, to keep the meat tender, and it was delicious. We also sampled fried calamari, which was very crisp and tender, along with fried oysters, hushpuppies, and blackened swai fish. The oysters were succulent. The Crab Trap only uses oysters from Apalachicola. The hushpuppies were sweet and light, and the swai melted in our mouths. It has a flavor similar to catfish. Here’s a nice thing The Crab Trap does with their seafood platters: they serve the heaping seafood over a bed of rice. The flavors and juices from the seafood seep into the rice, and it’s absolutely scrumptious!

In addition to our seafood platter, Holly served us battered fries, which are decadent morsels of potato-y goodness, and a bowl of shrimp salad, which is made fresh every day. I love The Crab Trap’s shrimp salad, which is creamy and has just the perfect amount of seasoning so as not to overpower the flavor of the shrimp. And for dessert, we shared a tart slice of key lime pie in a graham cracker crust, dressed with whipped cream. Did you know that The Crab Trap’s happy hour is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.? That’s a good long time to enjoy their drink specials! And every Wednesday is Wing Day, featuring jumbo, freshly prepared wings. And although The Crab Trap is known for its amazing seafood, they also offer a selection of steaks, faultlessly prepared, and served with salad, garlic bread, and your choice of a side. The restaurant welcomes folks for private parties, and it’s a favorite place for rehearsal dinners and destination wedding parties. For more information, call (904) 261-4749 or stop in anytime for lunch or dinner!

Adventure from page 43. certification, as well as Catherine’s experience as an Outward Bound leader and canoe instructor, the couple is prepared to create a lot of excitement on the water. “Whether you want to paddle the Amelia River and tour historic Fernandina Beach or Cumberland and Talbot Islands, or see Egan’s or Lofton Creeks, we are ready to go,” says Thomas. “We start each kayak tour with instruction for your level of ability, and the trip includes complimentary professional photography, freeing you to enjoy the experience as a family.” Amelia Adventures offers individual and multiseat kayaks enabling small children to join the excursion, and if you have your own kayak, bring a guest or the family along and you’ll paddle for free! In addition to kayak tours, Amelia Adventures offers two boats for private charter, Amelia and Cumberland Island tours, and sunset cruises. “We want to offer something for each person in a family to enjoy our island.” Very important to the Oliver family is the “Leave No Trace” ethic. “We encourage our guests to take only photos, and leave only footprints,” says the couple. One year later, the Olivers are proud to call Amelia Island home. “The thrill of seeing a dolphin, manatee, or a wild horse on Cumberland never grows old,” says Catherine. “We adore working together and love Amelia Island life —beaching with the girls, swimming, playing tennis, and, of course, sunsets with their grandparents!” The Olivers are living their own Amelia adventure, and are ready to share the adventure of Amelia outdoors. Backwater Fishing on the Amelia River BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTOS BY TERRY LACOSS

E

arly morning at the Fernandina harbor is a quiet time. Boats rock gently at their moorings, and pelicans line up waiting for the day’s action to begin. I arrived at the harbor early one sunny morning, looking forward to my fishing date with Terry Lacoss, owner of Amelia Angler and the Amelia Island Charter Boat Association, and the perfect person to go fishing with. We had planned to meet at 8:00 a.m. for a half-day of backwater fishing. I quickly located Terry getting his state-ofthe-art charter boat, a 26-foot Triton with a 300 horsepower Mercury outboard, ready for our morning on the water. Growing up fishing with my dad has given me a lifelong love for the sport, whether deep sea, surf casting, or backwater. My morning with Terry would offer us a chance to catch sea trout, bluefish, or the always feisty redfish. We were blessed with a crystal clear morning, and the river was as still as a lake. Unless you have gone out early on the Amelia River and explored its quiet waters, you cannot imagine the beauty of the marshes at that hour. Once on the river, the boat skimmed across the grayblue water. Terry had several fishing areas in mind and was constantly scanning the water for signs of fish. We stopped to try several promising spots. We baited hooks with live shrimp and minnows, then casted out, laying our bait close to the marsh grass. Settling in, we waited for our neon-orange bobbers to move. On our first few stops we had no luck. The only movement around us was the circling birds on their morning rounds. As we fished during the morning, Terry shared his amazing history, from golf pro at Amelia Island Plantation to owner of Amelia Angler and the Amelia Charter Boat Association, a

family business with his son, a charter boat captain, and his two daughters running the Amelia Angler gear shop on Centre Street. At busy times, he coordinates 30 or more charters for island visitors, who are often guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island or the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. A prolific writer, he has written a column for the Fernandina Beach News-Leader since 1977, is a frequent contributor to fishing magazines, and the author of two books on fishing. During the winter months, he offers a fishing school. Our third stop proved to be our best. An active group of dolphins not far from us indicated there were fish in the area. Suddenly, my bobber went down, and Terry coached me to let the fish take the hook, and then reel it in. The first fish of the day was a trout big enough to keep. We soon had more luck, adding bluefish to our collection. Too quickly, it was time to turn back. We arrived at the harbor, and my gracious guide cleaned enough fish to take home for dinner. It was a perfect fishing morning.
