Good Morning, WHAT A SACRIFICE THAT SAVED MY LIFE! Today is what Christians around the world will keep in remembrance close to their hearts as Good Friday. Today is the day where the “rubber meets the road” in the gift of salvation. Today is when Jesus, sent by the Father to take on the sins of the world for you and me, stands before his accusers and we hear the cry of “Crucify Him, Crucify Him”. This is the day, after being brutally beaten, he was made to carry the heavy cross by Roman soldiers down the Via Delarosa to Calvary’s Hill. Crowds lined the streets to see the spectacle. Some cheering that finally this threat was being taken care of, and others in deep, deep despair for the Jesus they loved so dearly. This day is the day that they nailed the hands and feet of Jesus to the cross, plunged a spear in his side, and at his request for water, gave him vinegar on a sponge to quench his thirst. And they pushed down on his brow a crown of thorns in mockery because he called himself a King. And there hung our Savior. Before dying, still thinking of those who killed him and sent him there, He summons his Father and pleads, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”. Such a beautiful expression of love from Jesus, showing that it was for us that he came. And then he hung his head and he died. The earth went dark, lightning filled the air, thunder boomed as far as the ear could hear. Jesus was taken down from the cross and laid in the tomb of a man named Joseph. The stone was rolled in front of the tomb and Roman guards were ordered to stand guard in front of it. For even though he was dead, Jesus still made the authorities nervous! Those who had followed Jesus were deeply sorrowed; the disciples were devastated. Human kind went dark. Jesus was dead. But think of the event: the Blood of Jesus was shed for my sin, for your sin. “Oh the Blood of Jesus, that washes white as snow”. It was a sacrifice of love that Jesus knew was going to happen because there was no other way out of the sin in our lives. He died, so we didn’t have to. I went last week to my daughter Jennie’s Easter performance at her church. There was one song that really stood out to me and I asked her to write the words so I could share them with you today. I believe they sum up this day and the amazing gift given to us. “Oh, the Blood, the precious blood, price of life’s demand. Savior Son, Holy one, slain so I could live, See the Lamb, the Great I Am, who takes away my sin. Oh the blood no greater love, Grace how can it be, that in my sin, yes, even then, He shed His blood for me! Today is a day of great reflection. “Low in the Grave He Lay, Jesus my Savior, Waiting the coming day”… Day | 101
