10. RECOVERY METHODS EMPLOYED
10.1.
GENERAL

The decision of the method (or the combination of methods) to be employed for any specific recovery operation lies with the Master, on the basis of the following criteria: .1 maneuverability of the ship; .2 freeboard of the ship; .3 points on the ship to which casualties may be recovered; .4 characteristics and limitations of equipment intended to be used for recovery operations; .5 available crew and personal protective equipment (PPE); .6 wind force, direction and spray; .7 significant wave height (Hs); .8 period of waves; .9 swell; and .10 safety of navigation.

This Section contains guidance on specific recovery procedures to be followed for the following recovery methods: The rescue boat (referenced to as Method 1) The accommodation ladder / pilot ladder / embarkation ladders for lifeboats and life rafts (referenced to as Method 2) The ship’s ‘transfer-by-basket’ arrangements (referenced to as Method 3).
