Peninsula Bridge brings robotics, computer coding to kids from under-served communities

his summer, 425 kids from underserved communities, such as Belle Haven and East Palo Alto, are on campus at seven private schools on the Peninsula, including Sacred Heart Prep, Woodside Priory and Menlo School. The students, who qualified for the program (called Peninsula Bridge) by demonstrating their motivation to learn, are taking courses to expose them to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) topics. Peninsula Bridge, currently in its 25th year, expanded the curriculum of its five-week summer program this year to devote time to these science and technology subjects. In addition to the core academic areas of algebra and language arts, students participated in 50 hours of hands-on science, computer coding, robotics, 3D design, and 3D printing. Resources necessary to learn in this environment, including laptops, were provided. Students also went on tours of Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook and Yelp to learn about high-tech career opportunities. “We have a commitment to Peninsula Bridge to support their programs by introducing youth to Microsoft’s work,” said Thea Nilsson, Microsoft community

outreach manager. “We hope to inspire local students to imagine and realize a better future for themselves and their communities. I’d like them all to return one day — as employees.” Jocelyn Swisher of Portola Valley, coexecutive director of Peninsula Bridge, pointed out: “We live in a high-tech world where knowledge and confidence in STEM-related fields are now fundamental to career success, not only in Silicon Valley, but anywhere in the world.” Bridge eighth-grader Myriam Leo said hands-on science is fundamental to any subject. “We go outside of the classroom to do science and it opens our minds,” she said. “I also learned that science could connect to a lot of different things, like art.” In robotics, 30 sixth-grade students used the newest robotics kits from LEGO to build and program working robots. In 3D design and printing, offered to 15 seventhgrade students, students used 3D modeling software to design and modify objects that can be rendered on a 3D printer. In computer coding classes, students are introduced to Scratch, a free online programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab, which enables young people to program their own interactive

stories, games and animations from their computers. This is the first year that Bridge offered the computer programming elective, available to 100 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at three school sites. “It’s rewarding for the students to see what went wrong with their computer program and then correct it on their own,” said Ryan Reiss, a Peninsula Bridge teaching assistant at Woodside Priory. “It’s cool when you see them so engrossed by computer programming,” added Jack Swisher, another teaching assistant. Teaching assistants are high school and college students, while master teachers are recruited from the teaching staff of local schools. Many teaching assistants are also former Bridge students. The average student-teacher ratio is 4 to 1, and the average student-TA ratio is 2 to 1. Over the past 25 years, 95 percent of students who attended Peninsula Bridge sessions over four consecutive summers have gone on to graduate from high school on time, Bridge officials say. The program’s objective this year is to prepare students to attend college through a STEM-focused curriculum, according to Maureen Garrett, develop-

ment director for Peninsula Bridge. “By making the experiences interesting and relevant to the students’ lives, we hope that they will develop an interest in pursuing STEM-related classes in high school and college,” said Ms. Swisher. For some students, this seems to be working. “The coding elective has helped me get a head start for next year,” said Bridge eighth-grader Ivan. “I could even see myself coding for my career.” In addition to its summer program, Peninsula Bridge added a transitions program during the school year (from September to May) with Saturday workshops geared to help eighth-grade Bridge alumni transition to and navigate high school. The workshops cover topics like choosing the right high school, time management and financial literacy. Peninsula Bridge students come from 30 public middle schools across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and reflect the demographics of communities the program is targeting, including those with Latino, African-American, Asian and Pacific Islander populations. Turner sets world cycling records for his age group Three national cycling records were not enough for Jim Turner. The Menlo Park resident recently set two world cycling records in the 75-79 age group at the Olympic Training Center Velodrome in Colorado Springs. Mr. Turner’s first record was set in the flying 200-meter time trail, a timed event where the cyclist gradually builds up speed over a couple of laps and the final 200 meters are electronically timed. His time was 14.100 seconds. The second was for the 2K Individual Pursuit, a timed event to see how quickly one can ride two kilometers. Mr. Turner’s time was 2 minutes and 51.420 seconds, which beat the last record of 2 minutes and 52:417 seconds set by

a French cyclist in 2011. “The rules for setting world cycling records are significantly more stringent than for Jim Turner setting national records,” noted Mr. Turner. “A critical difference is that your head official for a world record attempt must be certified by the UCI (international governing body of cycling). It’s not easy to schedule one of them.” The two-day event, called Grand Prix of Colorado Springs, was held July 11 and 12, with cyclists from 10 countries. — Tiffany Lam

City launches monthly movie nights The city of Menlo Park has started a new community event, monthly movie nights. The first screening was the 2013 movie, “Frozen,” shown Friday, July 25, at the Arrillaga Recreation Center in the Civic Center at 700 Alma St. Admission is free to the screenings, except for “Ghostbusters” on Oct. 28, when there will be a $5 charge if you left your Halloween costume at home. Those in costume get in free. The Menlo Park movie series, dubbed “Cinemenlo,” is presented by the city’s Community Services Department.

Initially, the movies were going to be shown outdoors at Fremont Park. However, so many events are held there that the city wanted to give the park and its neighbors a break, according to Jim Cogan, economic development manager of Menlo Park. hree local poets will read from their work and talk about their writing process at “A Poet, a Poet, a Poet,” a free event hosted by the Menlo Park Library on Saturday, Aug. 2. The program will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Menlo Park City Council Chambers at 701 Laurel St., in the Civic Center. The trio of local wordsmiths includes Caroline Goodwin, San Mateo County’s first poet laureate; Kalamu Chache, poet laureate of East Palo Alto; and Jym Marks, poet, musician and Menlo Park business owner. The author of two volumes of poetry, Ms. Chache has been heavily involved in the East Palo Alto and Belle Haven communities. She has taught poetry workshops at Belle Haven School, and plans to start a series of workshops at the Menlo Park Senior Center in Belle Haven, she said. “There is power in expressing what you are experiencing and observing in life. Art moves!” Ms. Chache noted when asked about her poetry. “I hope to bring the message to all in attendance that poetry lives in each and every one of

us,” she said. Mr. Marks lives in Fremont, but is a familiar figure in Menlo Park: In addition to being a poet, publisher, public speaker, jazz musician, Army veteran, and father of four, he is the owner of a barbershop and hair salon, part of Markstyle Enterprises, in the Willows area of Menlo Park. This year, he is celebrating 45 years of owning the salon, he said. Mr. Marks has published 11 books of poetry, the latest entitled “Can’t Hold My Tongue in Captivity.” A resident of Montara, Ms. Goodwin was a Wallace Stegner fellow at Stanford University. She teaches at the Stanford Writer’s Studio and the California College of the Arts. The poetry event is part of the Menlo Park Library’s Adult Summer Reading program, which runs through Aug. 9 and offers special programs and prizes to adult readers.
