Remember us Woodside High graduates leave gift for future classes Photos by Michelle Le Story by Dave Boyce

t Woodside High on June 7, the 382 candidates for graduation in the Class of 2013 had something for the two classes coming along behind them in 2014 and 2015: two $1,000 scholarships for each class. It’s a tradition at Woodside for the graduating class to leave the school something by which to remember it. Scholarships are a frequent gift. For the ceremony, Woodside included just one song: the Star Spangled Banner. Senior class president Samantha Shea welcomed the parents and guests and introduced the two major speeches of the day: “I’m a Big Kid Now” by Annalise Constantz, and “Simple Gestures” by Julia Belanoff. Another Woodside tradition is a speech by multiple speakers, all valedictorians. Principal Diane Burbak introduced the speakers this year: Emma Adams, Ethan Anderson, Katharine Anderson, Caroline Baltay, Julia Belanoff, Andrew Blatner, Ryan Blocker, Alaina Bujtor, Hannah Campbell, Nicole Clary, Christine Flock, Lauren Hennefarth, Serena Houghton, Allison Knapp, Nicolas Michel, Marissa Scully, Traci Tolles and Tirragen Vixie. h, what heights they’ll hit. The Looney Tunes Overture, performed by the Menlo-Atherton High School Concert Band and Orchestra, lent an optimistic and mildly comical note to the start of the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2013 on June 6. There are 418 candidates for graduation in the class. The ceremony began as it always has at M-A with notes of patriotism. A contingent of U.S. Marines marched out onto Coach Parks football field carrying the U.S. flag, Senior class president Dana Thomas led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the band and choir sang “America the Beautiful.” Four graduates spoke: Eduardo Gonzalez talked of the challenges ahead, Danbi Byun described her path of success at M-A, Tyler Finn asked “What’s next?” and Randy Oliver advised his peers about the importance of a positive attitude. Two foreign exchange students, Sofia Blixt of Sweden and Marino Santos Gutierrez of Spain, also graduated and were recognized. In parting, the choir performed a mix of popular songs, then maroon tassels were turned and maroon hats were tossed. A

The Windrider Film Forum returns to the Performing Arts Center at Menlo-Atherton High School from June 27 to 29. The highlight of the forum will be a showing and discussion of the film “Linsanity,” a documentary on professional basketball player Jeremy Lin, a third-string point guard for the New York Knicks in February 2012 when he created a sensation by scoring more points in his first five NBA starts than any other player in the modern era. The film, directed by Evan Jackson Leong, begins long before that media-crazed period and deals with the many obstacles Mr. Lin faced, including the complex issue of race in the NBA. “Linsanity” will be shown on the final night of the film series,

at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29. Visit windriderbayarea.org for more information.

Onslaught of oak moths By Kate Daly Special to the Almanac

C

alifornia oak moths are fluttering around right now, particularly in pockets of Woodside and Portola Valley. They prefer California live oaks, but the moths are so busy mating and laying eggs they will land even in swimming pools. John McClenahan, a fourthgeneration arborist and pestmanagement adviser, and vice president of S.P. McClenahan in Portola Valley, says he has received a lot of calls lately about the brown, one-inch wide moths because they are so visible. But it’s actually the caterpillars that cause damage. He predicts the current batch of eggs will hatch around the end of July. The caterpillars eat oak leaves to the point of

defoliation, which, he says, “is a stressor, but one or two bad infestations is not going to kill the tree.” Mr. McClenahan says the trend is not to spray with pesticides. Some clients, however, opt for a preventative treatment, which starts at $125 per tree. Natural predators, such as birds, spiders and yellow jackets, can be effective in cutting back the population, too. A

“I believe that local newspaper advertising is essential to my real estate business. – Mary Gilles There is something tangible and personal about holding the paper over your morning coffee that cannot be replaced by surfing the net. The paper provides a much richer experience because it is one of the key elements that define a community. Home buyers are buying the community as much as the house they are seeking. The importance of print advertising was never more apparent until recently when a luxury property I was preparing for the market was advertised in the Weekly and the Almanac. Soon after the ad appeared, we sold the home to the buyer who saw the ad and called her agent asking to see the home. Just like that. This is why I will continue to make advertising in the Weekly and the Almanac a key part of my marketing plan.

We do not believe that any person is exposed to these chemicals at levels constituting a health or safety risk. However, we have not made a formal determination that actual exposure levels are below the Proposition 65 "no significant risk" levels for carcinogens or "no observable effect" levels for chemicals known to cause reproductive harm, and we have not performed a risk analysis to determine the precise amount of exposure that any individual would receive over a 70 year period. Proposition 65 therefore obligates us to provide this warning to potentially effected individuals.
