Medical Disaster Preparedness Definition: A disaster is a man made or natural emergency/event that disrupts a community’s normal function, and causes concern for the safety, property and lives of its citizens. A disaster is an event that exceeds the capabilities and resources of the community to respond. During this program, Daniel Huie, MD, will introduce practical principles of medical disaster preparedness and provide available resources for disaster preparation. You will learn how to be individually prepared for a disaster and what community and government resources are available to you.

He is a reserve police officer and tactical officer for the Hillsborough Police Department and the Medical Director for the North Central San Mateo Regional SWAT medics. Dr. Huie completed his medical education at Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and medical training at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, CA. Prior to joining Menlo Medical Clinic, he was in private practice for over ten years.

Jan Brett will visit Kepler’s aboard her tour bus wrapped in artwork from her latest book, “The Three Little Dassies.”

Jan Brett to visit Kepler’s Children’s author and illustrator Jan Brett, who has more than 35 million books in print, will be at Kepler’s Books, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park, from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. She will arrive in a tour bus decorated with illustrations from her latest book, “The 3 Little Dassies” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, $17.00), the classic story of the “Three Little Pigs” with an African twist. The story is set in Namibia, Africa, where the little guinea-pig-like animals, known as Rock Dassies, hope to find a place to build their new homes. Bold Africa patterns

and prints fill the pages and the dassies are dressed in colorful dresses and hats. The author, who sells a million books a year, says she wants kids and their parents to delve into places they might want to go someday. She has researched many countries for her books including Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Botswana, Costa Rica and China. A ticket, acquired by purchasing a copy of “The Three Littel Dassies,” is required to attend Ms. Brett’s talk. For more information, call Kepler’s at 324-4321.
