Although it has been one of Menlo Park’s favorite dining spots for two decades, managing partner Ciya Martorana and chef Jorge Cortes constantly introduce new dishes in the weekly specials. Recent offerings included prosciutto with melon as an appetizer, hand-rolled pasta with sausage, peas, and walnuts in cream sauce, game hen stuffed with risotto and asparagus, and sanddabs, when available. 2010 SUNDAY BRUNCH Producing a meal satisfying enough for every member of the Brady Bunch is a daunting task, but surely they, along with the families of the Peninsula, would love to brunch at Stacks. Since the Menlo Park location’s opening in 2002, Stacks has provided customers with a bustling family atmosphere, complete with the smells and sounds of a homecooked breakfast. The personable, attentive staff is happy to satisfy customers with a smile and delicious food, making the restaurant the equivalent of one big happy family. MEXICAN RESTAURANT Cafe Del Sol is home to traditional and modern Mexican cuisine that

pleases this year’s Readers’ Choice voters. Green rice and green salsa are among the popular dishes, owner Uriel Gonzalez says. Fish tacos are new to the menu, but customers are already raving about them, he adds. BAR The historic British Bankers Club in Menlo Park is sporting a new name — the BBC Gastropub — to reinforce the point that you can dine, as well as drink, there. Readers’ Choice voters were likely thinking about the drinking part when they named the British Banking Club their favorite bar. The BBC has about 300 varieties of whiskey

and scotch and more than 100 brands of bottled beers and beers on tap, according to Gim Ettaro, the executive chef. There are also 30 drinks on the specialty drink menu. On some nights, guests at the bar can listen to live reggae, jazz or salsa music. As of last year, the bar started a monthly “whiskey dinner,� a four-course meal paired with whiskey that ranges from $55 to $75 a person. SHOE STORE There’s this guy who bought a pair of shoes several years ago at Nordstrom. After about eight years, when the sole separated from the top of a shoe, he bought them back to Nordstrom and asked if it could be repaired. The salesman said no, but he would give the customer credit for about 80 percent of the original price of the shoe. The customer then used the credit to buy a pair of sneakers. After about a week, when the customer discovered the sneakers were too small, he brought them back to Nordstrom to get a larger size. Woodside Vaulters take home honors By Hannah Totte Special to the Almanac

or the more clumsy, dance and gymnastics, even on a solid floor, is cause for embarrassment and, at times, injury. Combining the skills on top of a moving horse may seem nearly impossible to fathom. Members of the Woodside Vaulters accomplish this feat with excellence, as demonstrated by their recent top honors at the U.S. Equestrian Federation and American Vaulting Association national championships. The competition was held July 29 to Aug. 1 at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. Katherine Salisbury, 9, of Atherton was awarded first place in the compulsory freestyle round to win the trot individual women’s championships. She also received the AVA Zone Award for her successive high marks, said Carrie Wick, spokesperson for Woodside Vaulters. Katherine has been vaulting for four years and attends Philips Brooks School in Menlo Park. Kristen Kuhn, 8, who also has been vaulting for four years, won the women’s preliminary trot division. Miki Yang, 5, of Los Altos, won the women’s novice trot division. Four other trot vaulters from Woodside Vaulters placed in the top 10 of the competition. Carolyn L. Rutherford Co-founder Marine Science Institute

Carolyn L. Rutherford, who joined her husband, Robert Rutherford, in founding the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City 40 years ago, died July 24. A resident of The Sequoias in Portola Valley for Carolyn nine years, Ms. Rutherford was 80. Rutherford Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ms. Rutherford was a graduate of Florida State University. She married Robert Rutherford in 1951 in St. Petersburg, Florida, and lived in Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Egypt, and England, as well as the United States, during the past 49 years. She was a bi-lingual secretary for many years before joining her husband in founding the Marine Science Institute. More than a million students of all ages discovered the wonders of the San Francisco Bay Estuary through the institute, say family members. Later she worked for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in Los Altos for 15 years. Ms. Rutherford sang with the Peninsula Women’s Chorus for 30 years, as well as in church choirs. She and her husband traveled with the chorus to England and Wales, Europe and Hawaii. Throughout her life she volunteered and gave generously to causes for the poor and human rights, particularly for women and children, say family members. She worked with the Redwood City Library in Project Read and volunteered for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexia, accumulating more than 10,000 hours of recorded reading. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert “Bob” Rutherford; sons Tom Rutherford of 30 N The Almanac N August 18, 2010

Ashton J. O’Donnell Atomic energy scientist

Ashton J. O’Donnell, who worked on the atomic bomb during World War II, died July 28 in San Rafael at the age of 89. Mr. O’Donnell, a former resident Ashton of Atherton and Woodside, later O’Donnell helped develop nuclear power for peaceful uses. Born in Helena, Montana, Mr. O’Donnell graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. During World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project. After the war, he worked for the new Atomic Energy Commission and for the late scientist Edward Teller at Lawrence Livermore Labs in Berkeley. He was an early supporter of the Atoms for Peace Program, joining Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) as manager of nuclear economics in 1954. The next year he attended the first U.N. International Conference on peaceful uses of atomic energy in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1957, he took part in the first U.S.-Japan Joint Atomic Industrial Forum Conference on peaceful nuclear energy, and toured 17 countries to study their nuclear energy See OBITS, next page

Woodside artist unveils ‘Miracle of Hope’ A fusion of art, science and raw emotion will be unveiled in Woodside on Friday, Aug, 27. A three-paneled work, entitled “Miracle of Hope,� by Woodside artist Dave Putnam, follows the struggle of a human cell infected with HIV. In the triptych, the cell is initially overrun by the HIV protease enzyme, but beneficent protease inhibitors eventually triumph over the intruding disease. Mr. Putnam and his wife Martha said they will give 30 percent of their art sales during the month of August to the Stanford Positive Care Clinic to fund AIDS research. The triptych will reside at the Atherton clinic at 3351 El Camino Real, Mr. Putnam said. The unveiling event, which will run from 7 to 10 p.m., will occur at 1101 Canada Road in Woodside. Caltrain holds public meetings on fare hikes, service cuts Proposed fare increases and service suspensions will be topics for a Caltrain community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Caltrain headquarters in San Carlos. Meetings to receive public comments will also take place in San Francisco, San Jose, and Gilroy. Among the proposals to be considered are: suspending all weekend service, reducing some non-commute weekday service, discontinuing staffed ticket offices, and increasing the full fare one-way base or zone fares by 25 cents. Caltrain’s budget problems can be

attributed to several factors, according to Caltrain spokesman Christine Dunn. The railroad has lost $10 million in state funds each year for the last three years and, because of the recession, fewer people are commuting to work. Last year, eight mid-day trains were eliminated and parking fees were increased to close a $2.6 million budget gap. In addition to his wife of 66 years, Virginia (Gini), he is survived by three daughters: Sherry Burns of Cupertino, Joan O’Donnell of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Jennifer Conner of San Rafael; six grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild. His daughter, Lynn, preceded him in death. The family will hold private celebrations of Mr. O’Donnell’s life in California and Idaho. He was a member of the Atomic Industrial Forum, the American Nuclear Society, the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management, and the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers. Pension reform lawsuit in legal limbo Those following the pension reform initiative lawsuit will have to wait a while to find out what the court intends to do. At a hearing on Aug. 12, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge George Miram agreed to consider the lawsuit, but gave no indication of when he might reach a decision. Attorney Richard Miadich, who represents one of the plaintiffs, said the judge has 90 days. That leaves open the question of whether the lawsuit will be decided before the Nov. 2 elections. A grassroots campaign led by Citizens for Fair and Responsible Pension Reform gathered enough signatures to have the initiative placed on the ballot. The initiative seeks to raise the retirement age for new, nonpolice public employees five

years to 60, and also decrease their pension payments. Two unions, Service Employees International Union Local 521 (SEIU) and American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Local 829 (AFSCME), filed the lawsuit to argue that only the City Council has the authority to change pension compensation.

member of the Menlo Park Downtown Alliance, a group of business and property owners who promote an alternative to the city’s downtown development plan, said 60 people signed the alliance’s petition this time. The alliance clashed with the chamber during the last block party for advocating the alternative from a table in front of Posh Bagel, on property owned by Ms. Couperus. The chamber drew criticism for saying the alliance had to be in a free speech zone, but not asking representatives of the Bohannon Gateway Project to do likewise. On Aug. 11, however, the alliance sat on Crane Street, with tables lined up at the border of Santa Cruz Ave. where the action was. “One young woman came up to us and put her foot across the sidewalk line, saying, ‘Oh, I don’t think I feel any difference here; this free-speech zone doesn’t seem to be affecting me at all,� said Ms. Couperus. And the Bohannon Gateway Project? Representatives were working the crowd from another free-speech zone a bit further down the block from the alliance.
