ARTS & FESTIVALS IN JACKSON HOLE JACKSON HOLE EVOKES THE FEELING OF A CLASSIC WESTERN TOWN, YET YOU WILL FIND A SURPRISINGLY DIVERSE ARRAY OF CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES ABOUNDING HERE. The valley is home to a world-class symphony, community theatres, museums, performing arts companies, and a variety of art and fi lm festivals. Jackson Hole is one of the highest-rated cultural and art centers in the West. A few miles north of town is the National Museum of Wildlife Art, home to the country’s premier public collection of fine art devoted to wildlife. The structure is as beautiful as the view, sitting on a butte overlooking the National Elk Refuge. Witness breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding mountains, as well as wildlife in all seasons. Each summer, the Grand Teton Music Festival presents a seven-week season of orchestral and chamber music performed by a resident company of professional visiting musicians, who hail from the nation’s finest orchestras and symphonies. Concerts are held in the 740-seat Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village. Built in 1974, the hall is acclaimed for its intimacy and superb acoustics. A winter performance series is also scheduled. The Center for the Arts, in downtown Jackson, houses a variety of dance, theatre, music, film, and visual-arts organizations that encourage and enable theatre and dance students and fledgling artists and writers to pursue their dreams. The facility includes education and performingarts wings that encompass dance studios, classrooms, galleries, a rehearsal hall, and a magnificent theater. 40

Celebrate Wapiti and Wilderness during Jackson Hole’s ElkFest ELKFEST, A WEEKEND OF ACTIVITIES centered on the 43rd annual worldfamous Jackson Hole Boy Scout Elk Antler Auction, is an exciting time for celebrating nature, outdoor skills, hunting, and ecological education and awareness. Every spring, thousands of elk wintering on the National Elk Refuge lose their antlers before they migrate to their summer range. Local Boy Scouts harvest the shed antlers and auction them to bidders from around the world who make furniture, wall decorations, jewelry, and food and medicinal products from them. The annual event also includes a Historic Downtown High Noon Chili Cook-Off, Boy Scout and Cub Scout Expo, live musical performances, Elk Discovery Booth and Kids’ Corner, and the kickoff of the Mountain Man Rendezvous. ElkFest supports the winter feeding program on the National Elk Refuge, with 80 percent of auction proceeds going back to the Refuge.

Memorial Day Weekend will kick off with a variety of authentic activities that allow you to experience the “Old West” in true style. You can listen to western musicians and cowboy poets or visit the Mountain Man Rendezvous, where old-time craftspeople work the magic of their trades. The popular Old West Days Parade is one of the last and best horse-drawn parades in the West. The lineup also includes chuck wagon dinners, stagecoach rides, and shootout re-enactments. Kids intrigued with the Wild West drama in the streets can further explore their dreams at the Cowboy

Kids Connection at the historic Wort Hotel. Meanwhile, grownups will appreciate the chance to sample some of the region’s best microbrews at the Old West BrewFest. Those preferring the charms of the grape over those of hops and grains can taste test various wines from around the world during the Jackson Hole Rotary Wine Fest at Snow King Resort.

FALL ARTS FESTIVAL . . . September 9-19, 2010

ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY RECOGNIZED events in the Rocky Mountain West is the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. In 2010, visitors will experience the works of hundreds of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, in addition to an exceptional array of music, poetry, and cuisine. More than 50 events—including gallery walks, workshops, concerts, and more— round out the 18-day festival. A few of this year’s most anticipated events are the Western Design Conference, the world’s preeminent exhibition of western furniture, home

accessories, and fashion; “Palates & Palettes Gallery Walk,” offering an evening of social gallery-hopping; the “Taste of the Tetons,” during which participants enjoy food, wine, and desserts in the heart of historic downtown Jackson; and the 15th Annual Quick Draw Art Sale and Auction, which showcases artists creating original works as spectators look on. This year also marks the 9th Annual Jackson Hole Cowboy Jubilee Music and Poetry Roundup, an event that draws top performers in Western entertainment. Plan to bring the whole family to Jackson Hole to experience art festivals, galleries, museums and music events along with the many outdoor adventures available.

JACKSON HOLE . . . DESTINATION WELLNESS

September 25-October 3, 2010 Integrate mind, body, and spirit amidst natural beauty A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH to health and well-being, “wellness” has evolved in recent years from a trend to a

bona fide lifestyle. Wellness seekers and practitioners are particularly drawn to the planet’s most unspoiled places. This factor—coupled with Jackson Hole’s wellknown emphasis on health and outdoor recreation—inspired the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce to begin offering its annual Destination Wellness program in 2006. The 10-day Destination Wellness program provides an integrated approach to mind, body, spirit, and earth. Destination Wellness features the Teton Wellness Festival, offered by the Teton Wellness Institute (TWI). The festival celebrates interconnectedness through presentations, workshops, an exhibit hall, hands-on displays, and a movement studio. Wellness pursuits are now mainstream, and Jackson Hole’s exceptional concentration of talented wellness professionals, combined with its awe-inspiring beauty and the opportunity the area affords to commune directly with nature at its purest, make Jackson Hole—and it’s October Destination Wellness program— ideal for expanding the minds and opening the hearts of all who attend. 2 01 0
