Benares breathes to the rhythm of centuries, and like all those we have loved dearly, she is adorned with different names according to circumstances: Kashi, “the Luminous One,” is the name bequeathed by history and the scriptures, describing her sacred geography for the pilgrims; Avimukta, “the Never Abandonned,” because Shiva himself holds the city on the point of his trident; and Benares, for the merchants, consumers, and tourists. Benares is also known as Anandavan, “the forest of bliss,” a sanctuary of peace cradled in the bosom of nature, where the pilgrim meditates in devotion and pays respects to the memory of his ancestors.
