The countless number of hours Board Member, Wendy Bitner, and I spent working to finalize this critical grant for Florida’s ALS clinics proved well worth the effort. On May 21, 2013, Governor Rick Scott signed the budget line item of $1,000,000 for our ALS clinics and research centers. It was a day of hope for people living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in Florida. Most ALS clinics operate on a shoestring budget, wondering how they will continue to serve patients without an inflow of financial support. With the Bitner-Plante funding, our statewide ALS clinics will be able to serve more patients and ensure that their doors can remain open – a situation that was not guaranteed before the initiative was secured! In addition to this funding, The ALS Association Florida Chapter will continue to support Florida’s ALS clinics through our staff participation at every clinic day, additional financial support, advocacy and awareness and certification as Certified Centers of ExcellenceSM. Currently, attending a multidisciplinary clinic has been shown to extend the life of an ALS patient. Therefore, it is critical that we assist these centers every and any way we can. To find out more about our statewide ALS clinics, visit www.ALSFloridaClinics.com, or call me to schedule a tour of a clinic in your area. In Tampa, we have a monthly free Hope and Help Tour of our USF ALS Clinic. The tours are open to the public and it would be my great privilege to show you how the multidisciplinary approach benefits people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This funding helped to keep the doors of our Florida Clinics open- but your support is still needed to help fund other patients needs . . .everything from something as simple as shower chair . . . to support groups . . . to respite grants. Please make a gift today and make a difference in the life of someone living with ALS. Sincerely,

Florida’s ALS Clinics To Serve More Patients $1 Million State Grant Secured By Florida Chapter To Improve Patient Care

A

fter months of hard work, The ALS Association Florida Chapter, led by Chapter Board Member, Wendy Bitner and President and CEO Kim Hanna, secured $1 million in state funding for ALS multidisciplinary clinics located at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville; University of South Florida, Tampa; University of Miami, Miami; and University of Florida/Shands, Jacksonville through the BitnerPlante ALS Initiative. In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in the method of healthcare delivery to ALS patients. ALS multidisciplinary clinics cater exclusively to people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. At an ALS multidisciplinary clinic, patients receive comprehensive care from a team of specialists at one location and on one day, known as clinic day. The team typically includes a neurologist, pulmonologist, rehabilitation medicine physician, social worker, occupational therapist, speech therapist, respiratory therapist, specialized nurse case manager, physical therapist, dietitian, psychologist, palliative care expert and Chapter liaison. Multidisciplinary clinics coordinate care and interface with the primary care physician, local neurologist, and community-based services.

Even though ALS is currently incurable, studies show that ALS patients who attend an ALS multidisciplinary clinic:

i.e. telemedicine for patients who face financial, transportation, and/or physical barriers in attending clinic.

• Experience improved quality of life;

To find a certified ALS Clinic in your area: go to: www.ALSFloridaClinics.com.

• Receive more evidence-based treatments;

To tour an ALS clinic in your area, call 1-888-257-1717.

• Receive more aids and devices to manage the activities of daily living; • Have a longer survival rate. In fact, beneficial effects are derived from even a single visit to a multidisciplinary clinic, suggesting better coordination of care. Patients attending multidisciplinary clinics had fewer hospital admissions and shorter inpatient stays than those receiving community-based care. Previously, Florida ALS clinics were only serving 49% of the patients in our state. This was due in part to lack of clinic capacity and financial resources to serve all patients. Currently, there is a growing list of ALS patients, numbered in the hundreds, waiting to be scheduled for a clinic visit in Florida. This funding will have an immediate effect on people living in Florida by increasing the number of monthly clinic days offered and/ or improving service delivery methods,

“Even though I was familiar with the ALS clinic model because of my husband Dave, it was attending a Hope and Help Tour that really showed me how critical attending clinic is for an ALS patient. I knew then, that we need to make sure that all patients receive the help they need, and I am going to work to make sure that is possible.” Wendy Bitner, Board Member, The ALS Association Florida Chapter

A Life of Extraordinary Blessings

Former NFL Player, Derrick Jensen, Talks About His Career and Recent Diagnosis BY ALISSA GUTIERREZ

A

s a kid growing up in Osawatomie, Kansas, Derrick Jensen’s biggest dream was to play football for the local high school team. One of his proudest athletic achievements was playing for the undefeated Class 3A state champion Osawatomie Trojans in 1973. The team went 13-0 that year and recorded seven shut-outs. “I loved football ever since I started playing in the sixth grade in Osawatomie,” said the Pensacola resident. After graduating from high school, Jensen went to the University of Texas at Arlington, where he was a two-time Southland Conference MVP

ers in 1978. He served as the captain of the Raiders special teams for five seasons and contributed a blocked punt, which he recovered for the first touchdown, in the Raiders’ 38-9 win over the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII. He was also part of the Raiders’ Super Bowl XV championship team. He played with the Raiders for eight years. In 1991, Jensen joined the Seattle Seahawks as a scout. He covered every area east of the Rocky Mountains, and spent the next 21 years determining the strengths and weaknesses of every player, interviewing players and coaches and filling out scouting reports. In scouting, Jensen learned to rely on his gut and ironically, his instincts were also right 21 years later, when he began to notice weakness in his hands in 2012. At the time, he thought it was arthritis, or something related to his years of football. As the next six months passed, he began to suspect that something was wrong.

Derrick and Lisa Jensen and finished his college career with 3,346 rushing yards and was the first player in conference history to top 3,000 yards. Post-college, Jensen was drafted by the Oakland Raid4

“When you grow up in sports, you know about Lou Gehrig,” he said. “And as an athlete, you know your body. When I started experiencing the weakness in my hands, my gut told me this was something serious. I suspected there was bad news coming.” When he flew to Seattle in July as part of his job responsibilities with the Seahawks, Jensen visited a couple of doctors there.

Derrick with the Oakland Raiders Jensen’s instinct proved to be correct once again when he was diagnosed with ALS and was forced to resign his position from the Seahawks five months later in December, 2012. “Right now, the medication that I am on is slowing down the process,” he said. “It’s not a cure, but just slowing it down,” he said. “There’s really no definitive cure. We’ll just keep talking to the doctors and hope for the best.” The diagnosis of ALS wasn’t the first personal challenge of Jensen’s life. In 1999, his late wife passed away in an automobile accident leaving him to raise a 14 year old son, Davis. However, it would be only a few weeks later that he would meet his future wife, Lisa, who was counselor at his son’s high school. “Lisa helped my son and I through a really tough time,” Jensen said, “She gave me

hope and love at a time when I was not at my best. I’ve certainly been blessed that she came into my life. We both always believed our coming together had a greater purpose.” Derrick and Lisa were married last March. In addition to his son, Davis, their family includes Lisa’s children Mikaela, son-in-law Peter, Marra and Lauren Hartley Green. When Jensen received the news that he had Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Lisa immediately began researching ALS and found The ALS Association Florida Chapter. The Jensens’ were connected with Regional Care Manager, Judie Benwick, who provided information and helped them navigate through the often difficult process of managing a disease like ALS. “It’s never easy to receive a diagnosis like this,” Benwick said. “I try to identify the current challenges, then empower each person with as much information and resources as I can and hopefully make a difference in the quality of life that every patient deserves.” Jensen marveled at his life post-ALS diagnosis.

“For twenty-something years, I was on the road for 200plus days a year, and football consumed my life” he said. “I could say I got a bad deal, but in a larger perspective, and in light of all the suffering in the world, I’ve been blessed. I played in two Superbowls, had the privilege to work with some of the most extraordinary people in the game, I have a great son, I’m married to the love of my life and I’m incredibly grateful for the life I’ve been given.”

Jensen was on the field with his family for a special presentation in which he was given his No. 31 Oakland Raiders game jersey by team

On August 29th, the Seattle Seahawks flew Derrick and his family, friend, Joe Franco, childhood friend and Osawatomie resident Ike Brady, to Seattle to honor him during a ceremony at a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. At the ceremony, Jensen’s son, Davis, raised the 12th man flag on the south end of the stadium. “It’s a nice honor,” he said. “If you’ve ever been to a game there and listened to those fans, those fans are unique. In all honesty, it’s amazing the way the people in Seattle get behind their team. So, just to raise the flag and hear them, that is a fun part of the game. That is something that is very special.” It wasn’t just the raising of the 12th man flag that made Jensen feel special on that night. Prior to the flag ceremony,

Derrick and his son, Davis owner, Mark Davis, and General Manager, Reggie McKenzie. “I can’t complain or be negative, despite the diagnosis I’ve been given,” Jensen said. “I’m a pretty fortunate guy.” And as Derrick was the 12th man at the Seahawks game that night, The ALS Association Florida Chapter will continue to be a support system for people living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in our state.

ALS ADVOCACY u p d a t e More than just a “day in May” BY PATTI STANCO

I

t was five minutes before 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 11, and Lynn Antheil, who is a surviving spouse, and I waited patiently at the District office of Representative Vern Buchanan in downtown Sarasota. I glanced at the muted television mounted on the wall, showing the news of the anniversary of 9-11, and found myself thinking it was a fitting day to exercise our right to meet with a member of Congress. The District Director escorted us back to the conference room. We asked her if she had a personal connection to ALS. She did not. We asked if she knew if the Congressman had a connection. She was not sure. Lynn told her story. With poignant grace, she talked of the cruel timing of the diagnosis coming just days after she officially retired. She talked of her husband continuing to work for as long as he could as a highway construction manager. She spoke of the sleepless nights, the series of physical losses, the gnarled emotions including anger, seething frustration, isolation, and stress, somehow lessened by the support and love of their family and for one another. She spoke of the grief. She shared how she is choosing to stay involved to help others coming along behind her because no one can know what it is like to live with ALS unless you have traveled the path. We felt her husband’s

6

spirit in the room, although we did not acknowledge it to one another until much later. Looking back, it was comforting. Then we talked policy. The Director asked, “So what can I do for you today?” I explained we had three priorities we wished to discuss. 1) Request $10 million for continuing the ALS Registry – it is not known what causes ALS and the Registry will help discover what patients have in common and direct research. 2) Request $10 million in funding for the Department of Defense ALS Research Program – military veterans are twice as likely to get ALS as the general population. 3) Co-Sponsor the ”MODDERN CURES ACT” – which is a bill that will expand the number of compounds a pharmaceutical company might research by addressing some patent issues and will help many patients with other diseases in addition to ALS that do not have adequate treatment options. We left our handouts which articulated the priorities in detail and offered to serve as a resource for the office. We invited the Congressman and the office to the Sarasota Walk in April 2014. As we were closing, the Director asked who was opposed to the MODDERN CURES ACT. I said I was not

sure but I did not think anyone was - but I would check on it and get back to her. The next day I was back at my desk and Lynn was on her iPhone; we both sent a short thank you by email. I asked Lynn what she thought. She said she thought it was a productive meeting and clearly the office was interested in hearing from constituents and understanding what matters to them. A few days later, an email popped up on my screen from Lynn. The Director we had met with wanted to share with us that Representative Buchanan would be sponsoring the MODDERN CURES ACT! When Kim Hanna, the Chapter President and CEO, called to thank the Director and the Congressman personally, she asked if anyone else had advocated on behalf of MODDERN CURES. They had not. Thirty minutes of our time made a difference. Imagine what would happen if we could have the same impact with every Congressional office in Florida? The experience reminded me of a fitting saying I first heard in my home state of Michigan. “A snowflake by itself is so small and fragile – but just look what happens when they stick together!” Want to give advocacy a try? ADVOCACY VETERANS BENEFITS:

Accomplishments

Advanced historic regulations at the Department of Veterans Affairs that designate ALS as a service-sconnected disease. Veterans with ALS and their survivors now have access to full health and disability benefits, regardless of where or when they served in the military and regardless of how soon after discharge they were diagnosed.

Many Thanks to

The Iron Order Motorcycle Club Tampa for their generous support of The ALS Association Florida Chapter

24-MONTH MEDICARE WAIVER:

Eliminated the 24-month waiting period that people disabled with ALS had to endure before they could start receiving Medicare benefits. ALS is now one of only two diseases for which the waiting period does not apply, and the waiver for ALS is the only change Congress has made to the waiting period since it was first established.

PRESUMPTIVE DISABILITY:

Orchestrated Social Security rule change under which people with ALS automatically meet the medical eligibility requirements for SSDI and SSI payments. This ruling allows people with ALS to access their benefits months or even years sooner than before.

Partners in

HOPE

Statewide Collaboration Provides Critical Patient Care and Services BY ALISSA GUTIERREZ

M

ore than 13 years ago, in 2000, several ALS Association support groups in Florida and the then-named Tampa Bay ALS Association Chapter, joined to become one statewide chapter. Under one umbrella, the newlyformed Florida Chapter would have a larger impact on patient care and research and minimize administrative costs. Since that time, the number of people with ALS requesting help in Florida has grown from a few hundred to more than 1,000 patients served annually. Capacity-building is a method of improving nonprofit effectiveness through collaborations with community organizations with similar visions. This type of collaboration has been an important component in making it possible for The ALS Association Florida Chapter to provide care and services to people living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in our state. VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care since 1978, helps people living with medical diagnoses for which there is no current cure to maintain quality of life. VITAS provides quality care for adult and pediatric patients with life-limiting illnesses. Its multidisciplinary teams of caregivers work with patients and families to provide comfort and preserve dignity in the face of terminal illness. But VITAS is much more than that. For eight years, the company has been a valued partner, collaborating with and representing The ALS Association Florida Chapter to bring home visits, needs assessments, care, 8

advocacy, health education and support group facilitation to our patients. At times, when the number of people with ALS registering with our Chapter has increased before resources have been available to add Care Services staff – VITAS has stepped in to fill the gap. “Our partnership with VITAS is an example of VITAS’ true community spirit and the power of collaboration. They bring their resources, including both people and funding, into the partnership for the benefit of the ALS community,” said Kim Hanna, President and CEO of The ALS Association Florida Chapter. “We really could not serve the number of patients that we do without their help and support.” VITAS Senior Vice President of Operations Mary Zalaznik added: “We are proud to support The ALS Association Florida Chapter in its important mission of assisting patients with Lou Gehrig’s Disease as well as their family members and other loved ones. This partnership is a testament to VITAS’ long-standing commit-

ment to apply our knowledge and resources to meet the needs of the communities we serve.” As part of this partnership, VITAS social workers, counselors and nurses have been trained by the Florida Chapter to act as ALS Association Regional Care Managers to assist with our patient services. Currently, VITAS provides the Chapter a co-facilitator for five Resource Support Groups from Jacksonville down the east coast to Miami and west to the Orlando area. Also, the VITAS social worker, counselor and nurse become ALS experts, advocates and educators on the broader VITAS care teams. “Having the continued support of VITAS has helped our Chapter to further our ability to empower the ALS Community and families to live fuller lives,” said Jessica Bianchi, Regional Care Manager for The ALS Association Florida Chapter, who works closely with VITAS staff. “With this collaboration VITAS demonstrates the utmost compassion, care and support to patients and caregivers throughout Florida!”

A Young ALS Ambassador Francesca Marinello, age 14, lost her great-uncle, Larry Fein, to ALS. She has raised funds for his Walk team ever since. She was recently nominated for the “Golden Knight Scholar, Athlete Award,” sponsored by the Archdiocese of Miami, and had to write an essay about how she became involved with ALS. This wise, beautiful, young woman is also the President of her Freshman class at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, Florida, and a member of the varsity volleyball team. Below is her essay.

The ALS Medical Futures Scholarship Fund’s First Recipients

T

he 2013 ALS Medical Futures Scholarship Fund winners are Leslie M. Porter of Callahan, Florida; Debra L. Clark of Sanford, Florida; Katherine L. Ballowe of Saint Johns, Florida and Amanda Auker of Altamonte Springs, Florida. Sherry Murray made The ALS Medical Futures Scholarship Fund possible, in memory of her late husband, Rick. “My husband was a great advocate for The ALS Association Florida Chapter, it

was important to him,” she said. “I was a teacher and education is very important to me. When I was thinking about ways to honor Rick’s memory, a scholarship fund for the children and grandchildren of ALS patients seemed like the perfect way.” Rick Murray passed away in 2007, and Sherry has celebrated his life and his dedication to fighting ALS through a number of activities. In 2010, she co-founded a surviving spouse’s social renewal group called Next Chapter. The group meets every month, giving surviving spouses a chance to embark on the next chapter of their lives, post-ALS. As

well, Sherry is the Team Captain for The Next Chapter’s Walk to Defeat ALS team. “My husband never lost an opportunity to help someone,” she said. “And I know there are so many people whose lives have been touched by this disease who want to give back in some way.” All of the recipients of The ALS Medical Futures Scholarship Fund have been touched by ALS – they’ve lost either a parent or grandparent to Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In addition, scholarship recipients must pursue a career in the medical field. “I was elated that we have four recipients this year for the scholarship,” she said. “Maybe one of them will unlock the mysteries of this disease someday!” For more information about The ALS Medical Futures Scholarship Fund, go to www.alsafl.org.

Leslie M. Porter is a senior at the University of North Florida. After graduating with a B.S. in Health, she plans to pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Her grandmother passed away from ALS in 2009. Watching her grandmother’s brave fight with the disease fueled Leslie’s passion to enter the medical field. Leslie currently works with special needs children at Hope Haven Children’s Clinic and Family Center in Jacksonville.

Debra L. Clark is currently pursuing a second career as a Physical Therapist Assistant at Seminole State College of Central Florida. She spent more than 20 years in Indonesia as a missionary with New Tribes Mission. In 2009, Debbie’s mother was diagnosed with ALS and she returned to the U.S. to help her father as a caregiver. While caring for her mother, Debra became acquainted with a Physical Therapist who helped her family learn how to properly move and lift her mother. Through this interaction, she was encouraged to become a Physical Therapist Assistant.

Katherine L. Ballowe is a senior at the University of North Florida. She is currently enrolled in the Nursing program and has been chosen for a Nursing Externship at St. Vincents Medical Center. She has been active with The ALS Association Florida Chapter’s Walk to Defeat ALS, with her family’s Walk team, Ballowe’s Bunch.

Amanda Auker is in her second year of nursing school at Seminole State College of Florida. She’s in a dual program with UCF, where she is taking classes to earn a B.S. in Nursing. She plans to use the skills her mother taught her, and vows to always take care of her father and younger brother.
