A Clearer Vision For Our Children Wade shipman Superintendent of Education

When I was in fifth grade I got glasses. I remember the teachers moving me towards the front of the class so I could see the chalk board better (we didn’t have white boards back then) and it helped a great deal. But, not as much as when I got glasses. I also remember telling my mother I could see a stop sign that was nearly a quarter mile from our home that I could not see before. To say my vision was greatly improved would be an understatement. The best part was the improvement that I made as a student and athlete because I could now see clearly. As I look at Tallassee City Schools and begin to form our vision, it is important to know what is important to the people of Tallassee. On Friday

nights in the fall we love our Tallassee Tigers. We look forward to our band and majorettes performing at halftime. We love and support our children and the things that they like to do like our show choir, robotics and the fall festival. And we love our traditions like the ring ceremony and candlelight. These are just a few of the things that make our community special. Over the next several months, the Board of Education is developing a strategic plan to provide vision and direction for our schools. This vision is not necessarily new, but a vision made clear, much like a fifth grader with new glasses. Together along with community members, teachers and administrators we will establish strategies to achieve our goals as part of this strategic plan. We will look at what makes Tallassee a special place as we develop our vision. We will consider extracurricular programs like athletics, music, and band as well as continuing to improve our academics in our planning. I am hopeful that our vision will become clearer and be a guide for the decisions we will make.

Tallassee CiTy sCHools Mission: The mission of the Tallassee City School District is to provide a quality education, providing the basis for students to become life-long learners as well as moral, ethical, and compassionate people. A partnership of staff, students, parents, and the community will prepare students to become responsible citizens and productive members of the communities in which they live.

“Bye-Bye Birdie” The stage was full as students in the

Tallassee High School Choral Department gathered for their presentation of “Bye-Bye Birdie.” last fall’s production of “Grease” was such a resounding hit that Mr. Jerry Cunningham, THS Choral Director, has added a third performance this time around. 6 Tallassee Quarterly

Tallassee High school Matt Coker High school Principal Tallassee High school’s First Robotics Team Advances to Regional Championship Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) is a national program with fifty local competition sites in eighteen states. Each year, middle and high school student teams are tasked with building a robot to compete in a themed challenge. Tallassee High School fielded their first robotics team at this year’s War Eagle’s BEST competition which was held on October 10, 2015. The THS robotics team competed against the 25 other area teams and earned 2nd place in the robotics competition, 1st place for creative robot design, and 1st place for team T-shirt design. The team advanced to South’s BEST Regional Robotics Championship hosted by Auburn University where on Dec 5th and 6th, they will compete against 55 other teams from five different states. Curtis Walker, a science teacher at THS, sponsors the team (supported by Terina and eddie Gantt). The THS team members are Brady atkins, Hudson Deem,

Manvinder suden, Gracie Miller, Will nichols, Conner Crawford, Jackson Gantt, and Mandy Milner. The team is mentored by the following engineers from Neptune: Mitch Milner, Caleb Jones, Dillon French, and Daniel Cope. Working together, the team has made great strides as a first year program at THS.

Tallassee High School Band Band Director for The Pride is robby Glasscock. Assistant director is Michael Bird; Mike Hammonds is brass instructor; ryan Dean, percussion instructor; Vicki Baker, majorette instructor; and Brooke Barron is color guard instructor and auxiliary sponsor.

The Pride of Tallassee Marching Band took part in two marching competitions this season and earned highest-possible ratings in each case. In the Lake Martin Invitational in Alex City, on October 3, the band received across-the-board Superior Ratings for all divisions and the Best-in-Class award for Majorettes. On October 10, at the Heart of Dixie contest in Prattville, the band again received Superior Ratings for all divisions; in addition the band, Drum Major, Majorettes, and Color Guard all earned Bestin-Class.

sMs roBoTiCs TeaM The robotics team at Southside Middle School has done extremely well the past two years. Much of their success can be attributed to the tireless work of Mrs. Terina Gantt. She is responsible for building the program from the ground up and just this year helped carry the program to Tallassee High School. That being said, these successes could not have happened without the partnership with neptune Technology Group. Volunteers from Neptune have given countless hours to the program.

Boosting Engineering Science and Math (B.E.S.T. Robotics, Inc.) is a non-profit organization, which promotes project-based learning in a competition-type environment for middle and high school teams. This year’s competition included 4 middle school and 21 high schools (all of which compete in the same division). Tallasse Southside Middle “Southside Middle School students have participated in the War Eagle B.E.S.T. robotics competition since 2006. Our teams have always been very successful, historically placing in the top eight each year,” stated mentor, Terina Gantt.

and a shopping cart wheel,” said Gantt. Within the six-week period, students work to devise a strategy to score as many points as they can, in the shortest amount of time. From the strategy they build a robot that will be able to complete the tasks. In addition to designing and building the robot, students are required to complete a project-engineering notebook that is a technical journal describing each step of the process used by the students. It includes the formulas and calculation used to determine wheel size, chassis dimensions, and location of the fulcrum in the lever system, etc. The notebook also contains a research paper, which relates to the current year’s game theme and technical drawings of the robot parts and fully assembly. Mrs. Gantt noted, “This competition is truly a crosscurricular project. Students are using math, science, history and language arts while completing different portions of the requirements. It is a real-world learning experience. Students are actually using their knowledge from the classroom to produce a product. It is a great experience.”

Recently the team at SMS competed in Auburn’s B.E.S.T where over 24 other teams met. Our team not only won, but also dominated the competition. The students did an outstanding job and displayed those characteristics that we at SMS strive to instill in all of our students.

This is a six-week, highly intense process, which begins at kick-off day. At kick-off, teams see the game field for the first time and receive their materials to build their machine. Only materials provided by the organization may be used. “Basically, the kids are given two boxes of very random materials which range from plywood and PVC pipe to wire coat hangers

As a result of their win, the students will compete at South’s B.E.S.T. regionals, December 5th and 6th. The competition will be held at Beard Eaves Memorial Coliseum on the campus of Auburn university. There will be 55 teams from 5 different states involved in the competition.

Education Tallassee elementary school

The latter part of 2015 holds additional opportunities for the students at TES to be involved with their school to include several efforts at instilling a sense of volunteerism among both students and staff.

Jose reyes, Jr. Tallassee elementary school Principal

As Thanksgiving and Christmas approaches, Tallassee Elementary School has accomplished much with a great deal still to come before the end of the year break. Tallassee Elementary School principal, Dr. Jose Reyes, Jr., detailed some of the successful events of the fall and those to come over the next couple of months.

shanikka Beacher “Students at TES saw many great things this assistant Principal fall. We had a record turnout for our Fall Festival this year. I was blown away by the number of students and parents that were in attendance. It was great to see the students have such a great time. Our 1st and 2nd grade art show was a big hit as well as the students were able to show off their creations from our newly formed Art elective. We were so thankful for the donations that our parents provided in order to fund the program during the show. We are really looking forward to our Kindergarten art show in early December and the 3rd and 4th grade

Middle School Lunch Lady Land... If you were a Saturday Night Live fan in the nineties, chances are you are familiar with Adam Sandler. His quick wit and ability to put everyday life into comical songs was a staple for the show during that time. In particular, he wrote a song called “Lunch Lady Land”. Sandler’s satire of the daily lives of child nutrition workers and their struggles with the food they provide was quite comical. While he wrote the song in jest, I’m sure it came from his life experiences with hard working cafeteria folk. These women (and men) are some the hardest working individuals that can be found in any school district. If I were a betting man, I would say that most people could recall a lunchroom worker from their elementary school days. I can recall Mrs. Josephine McQueen. She was my bus driver/lunchroom line worker. She has since gone on to the “by and by”, but I still remember her kind words and hugs, even though it has been thirty years. For those born and raised in Tallassee, you may remember Mrs. Angie Conner, Mrs. Dennis Cobb, or Mrs. Lucile Dillard. My mother-in-law, Linda Cannon Curlee, recalls Mrs. Dillard (who served in the cafeteria of the East Tallassee School which is now Tallassee City Hall) as a person that was “always loving… and a very kind person”. Child Nutrition Program workers keep early hours so that students will be afforded the opportunity to have a hot breakfast. They do a quick turn

will display their work in mid-November. Our annual Veterans Day Program, led by our school counselor, was another great opportunity to provide our students with experiences that go beyond the regular classroom setting. I was also very pleased that our students were able to attend field trips to our local Civil War reenactment here in Tallassee as well as visits to Fort Toulouse and the Davis Theater.”

“We are just at the end of our blanket drive to assist our local salvation army and aCTs. It went really well and we had a lot of participation. We kicked off our canned food drive the first of November and have seen great results with it. We have a competition between our boys and girls concerning what side gives the most and the students have really taken that on. The competition has really gotten heated as the lead goes back and forth each day. We have also put out there the thought of a shoe drive for kids in order to be able to donate to those less fortunate than they are. We are looking at a couple of organizations to partner with on that endeavor,” stated Dr. Reyes. With 2015 coming to an end, Dr. Reyes mentioned that there were several fun events that the school will be participating in to let the faculty, staff, and students have a little fun during the Christmas season. “We are looking forward to our Christmas parties for the kids the last day or so before we get out for the break. The students really like that time together, and we like to do it because it just starts the concept of putting other things aside and just spending time with friends and those you care about. I can’t wait for our faculty Tacky Christmas sweater Day on the 16th of December and we will also have a Pajama Day sponsored by the PTO in late November. Again, these are just some things we do to have a little fun around this time of year.”

around so that lunch is provided in a timely manner. Our district employs eighteen workers in the Child nutrition Program. That number includes all personnel from the program administrator to the local cafeteria workers. They provide a nutritious meal in a clean and tidy environment. I take my hat off to them and to their daily struggle in “Lunch Lady Land”. Q and A with Mrs. Polly Kerwin (SMS Cafeteria Manager) What do you find most rewarding about your job? “i enjoy the daily interaction with the children. sometimes they might not feel good and i’m able to offer a positive word. if i can lift a child’s sprits in any way, that’s what i like to do.” Dr. Brock nolin Assistant Principal Southside Middle School Left to right-

WE come to church to pray, to worship and to fellowship. Do we do these things outside of church attendance? Should we? The answer is yes, well that was simple, the next question is how? Do we seek God daily through meditating on HIS word and then practicing it, how do we practice it? Let us look at four words given to us in 1 Timothy 2:1. Petitions – lets us look at petitions as a coming together to seek God in the needs of others and how we can be used in helping people with these needs as we are directed by God. People are in need for lots of reasons, health, work, finances, family and many other ways. Do we petition God to help them and show us how to pray for them in the different areas of need and how we can help with kind words, actions or just being there? Prayers – do we seek God for others along with for ourselves? Many times we just don’t want to bother God or think I can do it myself but think about it this way, seek God with the things in our lives gets us on the right track to begin with, if we listen and follow His directions and not

just coming to God to fix because we didn’t seek him or listen. intercession – have we been seeking God and asking for God to help us with the decisions of life or again do we wait till it all falls apart before we seek God? Let us be about asking and listening to the direction God is sending us in but remember ask with patients and wait for the answer. Remember when we talked about meditating on God’s word use it in prayer as we meditate and seek God for the answers. Thanksgiving – is the last word, are you a thankful person? Do we take time to be thankful for all that God has done for us, the people, the places, the events and the stage of life we are in? Take time each day to see there are things to be thankful to God about, as name them we see we are not alone but God is with us. let us be a people of worship each day through petition, prayer, intercession and thanksgiving. let us seek God in all we do as we pray for others, including our leaders in government. How we can help others know the God we serve and His great love for each of us.

Tallassee Armory

18th Annual “Battles for the Armory” Recap ~ Gibson’s View Plantation, Tallassee The event commemorated the 1864 Battles of Chehaw Station and Franklin which saved Tallassee’s Confederate Armory from destruction by Union Army raiders. The Battle of Chehaw was fought Saturday, Nov. 10th and the Battle of Franklin was on Sunday. Hundreds of re-enactors participated in those authentically produced battles which included calvary charges, blazing cannons and lots of musket fire. There was various period vendors, called sutlers, as well as carriage rides, a period ball and church service that was held in the barn. For more information on this year’s past reenactment or information pertaining to next year’s battles feel free to contact: randall Hughey (334-283-6888) or Bill anthony (334-799-9982). or visit tallasseearmoryguards.org.

The Tallassee Armory was the only Confederate armory not destroyed by Federal forces. Colonel Gorgas (CSA Flag) ordnance chief, had the carbine shop moved into Tallassee Manufacturing Company mill in spring 1864 as war threatened Richmond, Virginia armory. War ended before the plant reached its goal of 6,000 carbines per year. In 1864 Rousseau's raid bypassed it. 1865: forces under General Wilson (uSA Flag) misled by faulty map, marched 10 miles east; threat of Forrest (CSA Flag) barred their return. P i another o n esuccessful e r DYear!a y s American Indians have lived in and around Tallassee for more than 800 years. Yet, we know so little of their history. They had no written records so they told stories about their life, which passed down for generations. They were a proud people with very civilized systems for living together. Some of their customs and much of their food, we utilize today. Without their help, our early settlers would not have survived. We can learn much from studying their legacy; yet few people are interest today. "The Friends of Tuckebatchee", a child of the Tallassee Historical Preservation Society, attempts to educate through a heritage day for students from local schools each fall. Those who attend are taught about most of the important trade and ancient customs. They are told stories for entertainment and even shown how to play stickball; their favorite game. Several hundred students, teachers, and parents attended this event, which is very different from that staged at Ft. Toulouse. This year was our third year and we expect it to grow and improve in the coming years. Please make plans for your child next year for an excellent learning opportunity.

Tallassee Community Devel opment “Tailgating Even ts” total sales Aprox, $140.000 in 2015 in support of Comm unity Projects!

CDC’s Tailgate 2015 season a Tremendous success!! The Community Development Corporation’s Tailgate Season officially starts with the first event after Tallassee NOW! This year, that was the fundraiser for Girls’ Softball, on Independence Day. Due to a tremendous effort in presales, the gross sales were $14,167---over $2,000 better than the previous record. Some were surprised at the sales; some were definitely not. One school of thought said that folks were not going to come out and buy on the 4th of July, because they already had their plans made, and would not wait until then to get their BBQ. The other group said that folks were making plans for the 4th already, but they made sure that those plans included chowing down on the briskets, butts, ribs and sandwiches for which CDC has become famous. The second group was right, of course: the families of the ballplayers showed as much hustle as the players themselves, pushing so hard on pre-sales that the CDC had to go out and buy more meat as cooking commenced on Friday. What a good problem to have!

The CDC is Wishing All a Happy and Blessed Holiday season! We look forward to serving our community in 2016! Sandw iches Camp Stew
