POTENTATE’S MESSAGE By Elwood Paschal

ere it is May – the past 4 months have flown by. Lady Pat and I want to thank everyone who helped with our Khedive’s American Bandstand – the Scooter Patrol who prepared the delicious hor d’voures, our Decoration Committee headed by Noble Alan Cannon and Lady Sharon, all of the Nobles and Ladies who helped set up, tear down and clean up. It was a fun evening – just what we envisioned and more. Lady Pat and I and many of the other Divan members have been to the Potentate’s Balls at Kazim, ACCA, Kena and will be going to Almas next week. We have attended the Yacht Club’s Commodore’s ball and many other dinners and events. All of these events have been amazing – we have made new friends and renewed friendships from the past years - all of these wonderful people are committed to our same cause – our children. Your Divan has been busy! I have made surprise visits to almost every Unit. As I have told each of you my big goal this year is to leave Khedive Temple better than I found it. This is “OUR” house and we need to take care of it. Some things have been fixed, repaired or refurbished by choice – namely the sound system and the ballroom floor. Other things have come up that have required a major outlay of money – 2 of the 8 air conditioning units have been replaced, the walk in freezer has been repaired and it’s floor replaced, the walk in refrigerator has been repaired. We now have service contracts in place for the AC systems and refrigeration units. We are in negotiation on a termite pest control contract. Once again, your Divan has been busy! Your Divan is embarking on a new five year plan. We are in the midst of meeting to identify the future needs of our Temple and, hopefully, the best way

to meet these needs. Again, your Divan has been busy. The Divan Ladies have been working on several new projects – the biggest one is a Ladies’ Handbook to be given to the new candidates’ ladies and made available to other ladies if they wish. They have researched the information and have had input from Lady Nancy Lane, Lady Connie McManus, Lady Sandy Newby, and Lady Holly Register as well as the Divan members. Lady Valerie Howe has headed this endeavor so we know it’s well done! Our Ladies have been busy too! Our Business Meeting is May 28th. Please make an effort to attend – find out what’s happening at YOUR Temple. Ladies are invited and encouraged to come, have dinner in the ballroom and adjourn to the Club Room for a scarf tying workshop. Our Spring Ceremonial is May 29th and 30th. We need candidates to have a Ceremonial, so please see what you can do! We will be honoring Noble Page and Lady Nina Eaton. Page and Nina are constant helpers when it comes to anything and everything. They are the epitome of what being a Shriner and Shrine Lady is all about. We will have an Open House the night of May 29th which will include introduction of the new candidates and their ladies, a short hospital presentation, presentation of our honorees and open unit rooms. Saturday morning will bring the actual ceremonial, presentation of checks, parade of Units and lunch. The Ladies will be having breakfast in the Club Room at the Temple with a presentation by Lady Monica Carawan, Lady of Noble James Carawan, our Ambassador from Sudan Temple. Breakfast is free and open to every lady. Please see the flyer in this publication (page 44), at the Temple or on the website, www. khediveshrine.org. Our Rodeo is June 12th and 13th –

always a fun time. Just like last year, we will honor our military, active and inactive with $2.00 off admission tickets (ID requried). Saturday night is Blue Lodge night with discounts for our Blue Lodge Brothers. Joe Ramsey and Kenny Askew are the Rodeo Chairmen again this year – they work with their ‘rodeo crew’ like a well-oiled machine and do an outstanding job. There again, please see the Rodeo flyer in this publication, at the Temple or on the website, www.khediveshrine.org. And a reminder, if you haven’t already done it, please write your check for the Rodeo tickets you received in the mail. Better yet return your tickets with your check and become a Rodeo Daddy sponsoring admission for children not able to pay their own way. Shrine Night at Harbor Park is July 24th. he Khedive Temple Rodeo is approaching fast and the Rodeo Committee, working with Nobles Joe Ramsey and Kenny Askew is again trying to make this event a major Temple fundraiser. So Nobles send the Rodeo tickets back with $30.00 or more or keep the tickets and send the money in to make this function grow. Noble don‘t forget your dues. We have approximately 66 Nobles who haven’t paid their dues for 2014 and 251 that are in arrears for 2015. The temple has to pay the per capita and hospital assessment regardless for Nobles who are on the rolls as of January 1st each year. Also Nobles we have approximately 41 life members

who don‘t pay anything. Take a look in your wallet and if you haven‘t paid your dues, please do so. Also, remember, we have to have a Temple before we can support our charity— the Shriner‘s Hospitals for Children. Come on out and support your Temple and enjoy the festivities. If you are a new Noble or a Noble who doesn‘t belong to a Unit or Club, come on out and let me (The Recorder) know and I‘ll introduce you to the Nobility. The Divan will make you feel at home and you‘ll want to come back to all the Temple functions. ASSISTANT RABBAN By John Howe

reetings Nobles, spring has finally sprung, leaving the cold weather behind – good riddance. In the last Hi-Noble, I wrote about the un-mined resources of the building and property, and the importance of identifying and implementing methods of increasing revenue from both. To underscore the importance of broadening our revenue stream, I’d like to update you on the maintenance expenditures in the first quarter of this year. Late last year we issued a new maintenance contract for the ventilation and air conditioning system. The new contract called for an initial inspection of the system and recommendations for repairs. From this initial inspection, we learned how poorly the system had been maintained over the years. As a result, we’ve made extensive repairs to most units and

have had to replace two roof units. The saturated and rotted insulation beneath the kitchen walk-in reefer floor and door threshold has been replaced. Also, one of the refrigeration units had to be replaced with a new unit which necessitated converting the system to newer refrigerant. Repairs were completed on the audio system. The contractor found that the system had been improperly installed or modified at some point (as we suspected) and that the cabling had been nibbled on by rodents and was short-circuited. Leaks in the roof have plagued us for a couple of years now. During the first quarter the contractor was able to locate and repair all but one around the kitchen grease hood exhaust system. The repairs listed above, along with some other minor issues have added up to around $48,000. There are still many

things to be done. As our building ages, the repairs necessary will continue to accumulate and costs will increase. Your Divan is working on proposals to increase our revenues and will hopefully have a couple of them ready for presentation at the next business meeting. reetings Nobles, We have had a very busy 4 months with official visits and the beginning of parade season. I attended the Spring Sasa meeting in Pigeon Forge Tennessee and our fall Sasa meeting has many changes for this year. I hope to report these at our Business Meeting on May 28th. Please plan to attend. We are looking ahead to a busy time for the temple, We have our business meeting on May 28th, followed by our Ceremonial on May 29-30. Nobles we need candidates. In June once again we will host the

Rodeo. This is a major fundraiser for the Temple and with your help will be the Biggest and Best Rodeo Ever. Some of our Units and Clubs have begun their Paper Drives. Please support these they do make a difference. The money raised at these drives represent about 60% of the funds to operate our Hospitals. The remainder of the funds come from our endowment which is the 100 Million Dollar Club. Speaking of the 100 Million Dollar Club, your donation will ensure that the endowment fund will be there to support our Shrine

Ask the Red Fez How does one hold their fez during a prayer? The fez is held with the right hand and placed over the heart with the writing on the fez facing outward.

When is the Salaam given? There obviously has been some confusion regarding this. The ONLY person a salaam is given to is the Potentate. When addressing a Unit or Club Head, the salaam is not given.

When do I need to wear my fez during a shrine meeting? This also has been confusing for some. Nobles should always bring the fez with them to a shrine meeting. A very good "Rule of Thumb" is: If the Potentate (or his Representative) has their fez on, all Nobles should have their fez on.

ORIENTAL GUIDE

obles, I have started my jouney as your Oriental Guide making official visits with Illustrious Elwood Paschal and members of the Divan. It’s been a fun-filled jouney so far. I hope that the Shrine Clubs had as much fun as we did. Thanks for the hospitality. For the Units and Clubs that I missed I am truly sorry for not being there. I have 4 years and some months to make up for it. I ws assigned as Liaison Officer for some Units, but I’d like to visit all Units in the future.

Nobles, we all have duties and challenges ahead of us. The only way we can achieve our goals and help our Temple is with commitment from everyone. Let us support our Hi-Noble and the Hi-Noble Boosters. Also, let’s try to have more dedicated and enthusiasitic participation in our parades. In order to recruit more Nobles, we have to help all of our Blue Lodges. A good way to advertise our craft is by displaying our Masonic emblems on our cars. The public does not see our rings, but it sees the emblems at the back of our vehicles. Spring Ceremonial will be on the 29th and 30th of this month. It is not too late to recruit new members. Let’s all try our best to support Illustrious Elwood Paschal and the efforts of membership Chairman Chuck Schwender.

reetings Nobles: We are now in full swing with our 2015 parade and event schedule. I would like to thank those that participated in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade at Ocean View on March 14th. Despite the rain, spectators lined the streets to view this wonderful parade. Also, I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Bill Kern for, once again, providing a pre-parade breakfast. Your generosity was appreciated by all that enjoyed the delicious food you provided. Many units participated in the Daffodil Parade in Gloucester on April 11th. It was a sunny day with abundant flowers and spectators. Thank you for attending to educate the public on what we are all about. I would like to thank Al Kinchen, Assistant Director of Uniformed Units, for his assistance before, during, and after the parades. His hard work and dedication are assets to me and the Khedive Temple. By the time this publication reaches you, the NATO Parade in Norfolk on April 25th and the Founder’s Day Parade in Holland on May 16th will be in the past. Both of these parades are Temple functions so I trust there was enthusiastic participation. The following parades will take place in the next few months. e are fast approaching our Spring Ceremonial on May 29 and May 30, 2015. As of the writing of this article, we have approximately 10 petitions for this ceremonial. Our goal for the year is to bring in no less than 100 new members this year. To reach that goal, we need to initiate 50 new members at each ceremonial. The math is easy; we are at 10% of our membership goal for the first ceremonial with only weeks to go. As Khedive Shriners, we have two important priorities. The first is to assist our Shriners Kids to get the best medical care available for the issues the Shriners Hospitals treat. We do that by providing transportation, lodging, and meals for the kids and a parent whenever they need it for their appointments and by

financially supporting the Hospitals so they can secure the equipment and personnel needed to provide the best care. The second priority is to grow our membership. Gentlemen, we cannot achieve our first priority, the best care for our Shriners Kids, without achieving the second priority, membership growth. I ask each and every Khedive Shriner to speak with your masonic Brethren about the Shrine and the wonderful work we do with children. Invite them to learn more about how they can help and have fun while making a lasting impact on the lives of children. If every member of Khedive Shrine would prioritize membership, we would blow away our membership goal. Don’t wait. Do it now and help us welcome 50 or more new Shriners to Khedive at the Spring Ceremonial. Khedive has another membership issue that needs to be addressed. Currently, there are more than 300

GREENVILLE HOSPITAL REPORT By Jody Dudley

hriners and Families, Howdy from Greenville SC. Hope all is going well with each of you. Our hospital is doing well, the new patient count continues to increase and the wait time continues to decrease. These are great things to celebrate. I would like you to mark your calendars for next year’s annual board meeting. The dates are March 11 and 12, 2016. This would be a wonderful time to visit the hospital. Greenville’s meetings are the 4th Monday of each month. Contact me if you would like to attend with me. A special thanks to all the Shriners and their families for helping to keep our hospitals thriving. I also offer a special thanks to our Divan for all they do. You can ‘friend’ any of the hospitals on Facebook, or view

their websites. Please feel free to check them out. I will admit I am a little slow on this computer stuff, but it’s nice to see what the hospitals offer. ne thing we can all be sure of nothing stays the same. The world around us is constantly changing and we must adapt to those changes. The following comes from an email sent by our Chairman of the Board of Trustees for our hospitals, Imperial Sir Douglas Maxwell on February 11, 2015. “Where do we go from here? What is the next great ‘Un-met’ need of children? This was one of the main subjects discussed at the seminar. Is there ‘A next’ un-met need for children… A ‘Game Changer’ to use a popular sports metaphor. A question you might have…’Why now?’ Why can’t our 22 hospitals continue ‘as they have been for the last number of years. The answer …‘Most can’ … but a few of our hospitals need an additional new path. Why is this? Markets are shifting: A few of our current locations that have had plenty of families needing our care in the past, now have a different demographic. Our mission of orthopedics has been slowing there. We still have a great facility, with a highly skilled medical staff, but just not enough children needing this discipline of the ‘orthopedic medicine’ we provide. And…. Competition is increasing & ‘Referrals’ from our affiliates are slowing: The ‘Affordable Care Act’ in 2015, is continuing to affect us. It is pushing some of our affiliates to admit more children to their own facility and not refer them to us as they have done in the past. They now need those children’s ‘Billings’ to cover their ‘growing cost of operations’ at their hospital. So what can we do to help a few of our hospitals increase the amount of care they provide? As our predecessors did in the 1920’s and 1960’s, we are exploring …. What do today’s children need the most. Here are some of the ‘Un-met Needs’ of this generation of children…. • Obesity • Diabetes • Early Childhood Development • Autism • Rehabilitation and Sub-acute Care • Additional ‘General Surgery’ and • Sports Medicine So why aren’t the above being handled by the other Children’s Hospitals? There are two other factors that we have found….  Even though there are becoming more families with ‘Insurance’ provided through the ‘Affordable Care Act’, many of these families are substantially ‘underinsured’ or have huge deductibles.

 And much of what children need in the year 2015, is not covered by the insurance they have or the insurer doesn’t receive enough re-imbursement… so the larger hospitals won’t provide the care. Let’s do a quick review of the needs. Obesity…Digestive Health... Needs: In the past 30 years, childhood obesity has more than doubled and in adolescents, it has quadrupled. This continues into adulthood causing severe health complications and quality of life issues. A premier digestive health program could also lead Shriners Hospitals into a robust ‘collaborative research environment’ to improve the general health of children. Diabetes… Needs: Childhood and adolescent diabetes is becoming one of the most important health problems in the United States. 1.93 cases per 1000 children and growing. It is the 7th leading cause of death and has a high propensity to lead to severe adult complications. This discipline could also lead to a robust research program to improve lives. Early Childhood Development/Autism… Needs: The community need at an ‘All time high’ with the needs having increased 17.1% over the last 12 years. In 2012, the prevalence rate rose to 1 in 110 children, a 600% increase over the past two decades. Rehabilitation and Sub acute care… This is currently Shriners Hospitals largest service provided by volume. It could be referred to as either a Skilled Nursing focus or a Specialized Surgical Hospital focus. It can help provide us greater ‘Brand Identification, Identity, and Image.’ Sports Medicine… Shriners Hospitals could perhaps have a single Hospital location that would attract the major sports injury problems from all around the country. With the right staffing and surgical teams, it could become known as the top ‘Sports Injury Care Center’ of the United States. And an expansion of our General Surgery procedures….. Because of where some of our hospitals are located, the area might be lacking a ‘General Children’s Hospital’ with ‘Specialty Care. Our Shriners Hospitals could provide those additional surgical specialties because of our financial wherewithal and expertise. These and the other medical issues of ‘Our Times’ may become the next part of the Philanthropy the we have become known for. What will the next ‘Care’ for the greatest Philanthropy the world has ever known… Shriners Hospitals for Children.” I think in the next 5 years or so we will begin to see a movement to include one or more of these areas in our hospital’s mission. Isn’t it great to be a “Khedive” Shriner!

reetings Nobles from the Arab Patrol. Well, spring is finally here and I hope the cold weather is gone. It’s good to get outside agan. The real spring indicator is the Chesapeake Shrine Club Oyster Roast. The Patrol helped serve and the weather cooperated. As usual, the food good and the crowd large. Overall, the Patrol congratulates the Chesapeke Shrine Club for another outstanding event. For our March meeting, we invited our Ladies, and special Ladies, to join us for lunch, at Logans. The food was good and everyone enjoyed themselves. At this meeting the Patrolmen voted to accept Associate members to join us. We hope some Nobles will accept and help us keep the, “oldest and first Unit of Khedive,” alive. The tradition of the

Patrol has always been outstanding since its beginning in 1909. Our accomplishments are visible by our many trophies on display in our trophy cases, outside our unit room. The Patrol also voted to welcome the Yacht Club into the joint use of our room with the 18 Wheelers. As always the more the merrier. Our April meeting will be men only, but in May, in order to honor our Mothers, we will have lunch with the Ladies invited. The June meeting will be men only but in July we will have a picnic with our Ladies. Anyone interested in joining us, contact any member for details. We need to keep in our prayers our 2nd Lieutenant Bill Huguenel. He has been under the weather. Hope you are feeling better soon.

100 Years

he Brass Band has changed the style of music we play at parades and the audiences have responded positively. We recently participated in a paper drive with the Drum and Bugle Corps, and look forward to working with them again. If you have played an instrument in the past, we are actively looking for new members. We rehearse at the Shrine Activity Building Tuesday evenings. The annual Band fundraiser dinner dance at the Shrine Center was held Friday, April 24. The Notables Swing Band provided the entertainment. We are scheduled to perform at Lake Prince Woods Retirement Community in Suffolk on May 8, The Pungo Strawberry Festival May 23, and Big Bands on the Bay at Ocean View on June 14. Jeff Davis has stepped down as Director of the unit, but he will continue playing with the Band as a musician, We thank Jeff for his hard

work and dedication to the band. His efforts have helped grow the band to where it is today. He has increased participation of Shriners in the Brass Band and developed the 18-piece dance band. elcome to the ever happy world of the Khedive Clowns. We had a great showing at the St. Patrick`s Parade (photos right) even though the rain tried to put a damper on it. I have just one question? Can I get a “do over”? There was another great showing at the Khedive Easter egg hunt. Great job guys you know who you are. Unfortunately our newly elected Director Eric Degan decided to step down due to personal reasons. I certainly hope this does not prevent him from hitting the streets with us. In the Clowning world more is always better. But never fear help is on the way as Assistance Director Paul Durand stepped right up to right the ship. We are now officially into parade season so hit the streets when you can. Harry Tew is once again heading the Clown group controlling the “blow-ups” at the Rodeo. Harry does a great job at this but Nobles he really could use some help. How about dropping him a note or giving him a call to line something up with him? I would appreciate it as Rodeo Chairman and I am sure he would as well. I cannot close out my article without an advertisement

he Camaros are working hard to be ready for the SASA and MASA competition. Practice is under the direction of Noble John Conroy. Parade practice is ongoing under the direction of Noble Bill Irving, P.C. The Camaros had a great day supporting the Chesapeake Shrine Club at their Oyster Roast. The food was great and everyone had a great time. The Camaros are planning a Paper Drive on May 15 to support the Transportation Club. It will be at the Great Bridge ABC Store. Please come out and support the drive. We have a car available and ready to ride. If anyone is interested, call Capt. Terry Bledsoe at 757-589-8210. All you have to add is your name on the car and join us for some fun. Remember to continue to support our Shrine Center at the Rodeo and let’s make this a banner year. See you on the streets. n 19 March 2015 at the invention from Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal, I attended my first Century Club luncheon, as a new member. The Century Club is made up of the 100 members of Khedive Temple, by length of service in the Shrine, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 100 YEARS OLD. The Century Club membership , with number 1 on the list, from 1944 to number 100 on the list at 2015. At this meeting two members of the Directors Staff, were added to the Club. Watt Perley came in at number 94 and Dick Wright, P.P. at number 98. This makes the Directors Staff the only unit in our Temple with two members with over 50 years of service in the Directors Staff and members of the Century Club.

At this luncheon I had the opportunity to talk to Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal about the Spring Ceremonial, Elwood told me that the decision has been made to have a Non Traditional Ceremonial, without the Second Section. The last Second Section, with “Hot Sands” was held on 2 June 2012, we had a Cold Sands Ceremonial on 20 Oct. 2012. I was told that the Temple is investigating the cost and merits of the alternate to the Second Section, the Shrine Arch Production. This program highlights the Masonic Rites, York Rites, Scottish Rites and the Shrine Rites. I have seen the video of this production and it is impressive, to say the least. To put on the Shrine Arch Production, it would require the following: 21 Noble cast, 11 Nobles to make up program related support groups, 2 spot light operators, a master of ceremonies announcer, 2 sound system operators, 2 musicians. This

is a total of 39 staff members, for a 40 minute production. It will also require the purchase of the sets and building blocks at a cost of $2,085.00 plus $420.00 freight, (2007 dollars) which has to be purchased from Ararat Shrine Temple in Independence, Missouri. As outlined in their narrative “The objective of the Arch Program is to consolidate and orchestrate Masonic and Shrine quality values into a unique educational and entertaining production.” The Arch Production will be open to all Nobles, Ladies and Invited Guest. If the time has come for Khedive Temple (All Temples) to come in compliance with the Shriners International, Anti-Hazing by laws, and remove the Second Section from our Ceremonials, I am confident that Illustrious Sir Elwood Paschal made the correct decision for our Ceremonial. The second Section will be missed by all, it has been part of our Temples history for 90 years and a big part of my life for 54 years. May God Bless our Shrine Temple.

s we travel further into the year we keep our heads high and our motors running. Being such a small unit we are having problems participating as much as we would like and need to but we continue to do our best for our Temple and the Children that mean so much to us all. Anyone that wants to join a motorized unit and just wants to see how much fun they can have driving one of these little cars in encouraged to come out and join us. Being small isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t easy but it sure can be fun! You are more than welcome to come out to our meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 PM in our meeting room at the Temple. BEACH BUM BROTHERS

n 2010, the Beach Bum Brothers Unit was founded and the first parade they participated in was the Daffodil Festival Parade in Gloucester. A parade that we have not missed over the past 6 years, we were once again riding our Segways this year. The Beach Bum Brothers Unit enjoy being seen as part of the group of the dedicated Shriners from the Tidewater Shrine Club as well as those from other Units that made the trip to Gloucester for the parade. The folks of the Gloucester area are fantastic and I would encourage other Units from Khedive to participate in the future. A good time was had by all. As we approach the Spring Ceremonial of the Khedive Shrine, I would encourage all Master Masons to be on the lookout for prospective members for the Khedive Shrine organization. We must keep in mind that without Master Masons, we cannot function as Shriners. Be active in your Lodges and seek members for membership in the Shrine. Look around your Lodges for known Shrine members and invite them to participate in the functions of Khedive Shrine. We all need to be ambassadors and to help create a large class of new members for the Spring Ceremonial. The Beach Bum Brothers Unit continues to support the activities of the Peninsula and Tidewater Shrine Clubs. If

(April 19) The D & B annual Fish Fry should be a well-attended event that showcases our cooking talents that include: Franks Beans & Charlie’s Slaw, Jacks Fried Fish, Bobs Hushpuppies, and Chucks hot dogs. The Band competition is highly anticipated: Jeff Davis leads his group of outstanding Musicians, and Joe Harris Directs the Drum & Bugle Corps patriotic marches. We are fortunate to enlist the talents of the Jobs Daughters, Motor Corps, Hillbillies, Mini-18Wheelers and Clowns with their outstanding cooking talents. The Ladies of the Drum & Bugle Corps put out an amazing desert table. We were entertained by a world class auctioneer. All in All a great day was had by everyone at the Khedive Shrine Center. Mark May 11th for the annual Drum & Bugle-18 Wheeler Golf tournament. Ocean View Golf Course, Great Italian theme meal. The Holland Parade is quickly approaching; this is a short but happy parade. June 12-13 Rodeo Playing the National Anthem with a very special combined Band. The Spring Ceremonial is May 29th & 30th, invite a new member. We will have a Meet-Eat-Greet-Drink-Play room to demonstrate the advantages of joining the Drum & Bugle Corps. Please keep our Shrine children, sick and distressed in your thoughts and prayers. he Ocean View St. Patrick ’s Day was a joyful success, eventually over two dozen strong. We proudly represented The Beat of Khedive. Mike Versic wowed them at the Knights of Columbus & Democratic Society Club. It was a great time for everyone and we got the Shrine message out. The festivities were highlighted by the Nobles celebrating the wearing of the green literally with “Green Beards and Green hair.” Our D & B Stagg Oyster Roast was well attended with cooperating weather. George, Johnny, Dave, Frank, Bill and Darren, did a fantastic job. This was a day of appreciation for our hard working Nobles. April was a busy month with events each weekend: (April 2, 3, 4) The Annual Khedive Drum & Bugle Corps Paper Crusade is traditionally held on Easter Weekend. This is the second busiest retail weekend, surpassed only by the Christmas retail shopping period. We meet the public to address our philanthropy for the Shiners’ Hospitals and Transportation Fund. This was a great showcase of Noble pride. This was one of the first years that the Shriners Hospital was added to their charity

ummer is right around the corner and things are already heating up at the Club. Let`s start by recapping the Oyster Roast. Let me see we had wind, plenty of wind, we had rain, and lastly we even had snow flurries. But the four seasons could not stop just short of 2,000 people from attending. Thank you all for participating in whatever capacity you choose. We just completed our workers appreciation party and it was my pleasure to recognize one of our longtime supporters, Jimmy Smith. Once again Jimmy on behalf of the Club thanks for being there for us all those years. Now moving along in June the Club will be dark. But that does not mean we will not be active. Because June is Rodeo month and the Club members all take an active role in helping make that Temple function a success. If you don`t

already have a job and you want one pay close attention to the Khedive e-mails and come to one of our planning meetings. As they say let`s make this years the biggest and best. I hope to see you there working or watching. July is our annual Father/Son/Daughter Night. So if you do not have one of your own handy grab one from someone else and come on out. obles, the Khedive Golf Club has lost two of its most dedicated members in the past two years. Noble Harry Polay, which passed away approximately one year ago and now we lost Noble Rod Rushford on March 29, 2015. These two Nobles were the back bone of Khedive Shrine Golf Club. They did all the scheduling, planning and made sure each player was assigned a team to play with at each of the 36 schedule outing. Harry and Rod donated their time and energy for the club that they loved for many of years. The 2015 Khedive Golf Season has started off in good fashion with good weather and we have averaged over 100 players for each of the first four scheduled outings. Also, we have had our first Hole-In-One, which was made by guest member Jim Nye at the par three 16 hole at the Nansemond River

Golf Course using an 8 iron. Well done Jim. Khedive Shrine Golf Club has over 160 members and the Golf Club has grown to the point that we cannot support any new members at this time. The reason is that the maximum number of players that are allowed to play an outing is 144 players, which is putting two teams on each of the 18 holes. Many of the 17 Golf Courses we are scheduled to play only have enough golf carts to support 30 teams (120 players) and they are not willing to get additional carts due to cost. The Khedive Shrine Golf Club is taking prospective member applications for Nobles and Guest of Nobles. Note: Shriner’s will be selected first and then guest members will be selected if there is an opening for membership. Also Nobles, some teams are not turning in their score cards at end of their scheduled round of golf. I need all score cards so I can input your scores in the golf program and this also provides me the number of rounds of golf each player has played to be eligible for gifts, prizes and tournament play. Sorry for the pun; I can see the tomatoes flying from every direction at me! Seriously, spring and summer are coming in like a lion and that means we have lots of opportunities to get more active in our unit and make a difference in the lives of our kids. Please make every opportunity to come out to fellowship and show pride in our fraternity. When others see us active, they are much more likely to get off of the sidelines and reinvest themselves in our good works. This isn’t just true for our unit or even our fraternity. It’s also true for civilians, who after seeing us out there, may just say, “What have I done for our community today?” Kindness is contagious. Please keep your eyes on the Temple Calendar and for the Secretary’s emails for upcoming events. Of course, the BEST way to get this information is to come to the meetings! Paul Pennybacker attended ACCA Temple Installation of Legion of Honor Officers in Richmond Virginia On January 24th SASA PC/PC Don Super, PC Jack Laursen, SASA Adj./ PC/Ill. Pete Gordon, and Commander R.G. Brown presented the Colors at the Admirals Shrine Night. On March 15th we put our trailer in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ocean View with all the service flags. PC Forrest Garland, PC Jack Laursen, SASA Adj./PC/Ill. Pete Gordon, SASA 2nd Vice CDR/PC/Ill. Paul Pennybacker and Commander R.G. Brown. 1st Vice CDR John Jones (Photographer) and SASA PC/PC Don Super (Yacht Club) were in attendance. On March 29th we presented the Colors for the LOSNA Zulekia Court #35 installation of the 2015 High Priestess Lady Michelle (Chelle) Martin. Entertainment at the Piano was provided by Dick Meeker. PC Jack Laursen was selected Legion Noble of the Year and LN John Glauner was presented a Certificate of Appreciation. reetings Nobles, Ladies, and Air Horn Junkies, The Mini 18-Wheelers kicked off the parade season with a positive showing at Norfolk’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We rolled down the streets that day with nine trucks and “Blasted” our way through a rowdy crowd who were heavily armed with umbrella to fight of the rain. Luckily, the heavy rain held off long enough to get the parade in and afterwards several of us along with our “Fan Club” attended the K of C after party. Unfortunately, we were only able to get one member out for the Gloucester Daffodil Parade, and Noble Terry Putt made plenty of noise for those folks up on “The Riva”. By the time this issue of the Hi-Noble hits the newsstand, our unit’s will have participated in the NATO Parade, and together with the Drum & Bugle Corps, taken part in a co-sponsored May golf tournament. Hopefully, the turnout will be strong, and golfers will not be too upset when they hear air horns going off in the midst of their putting stroke. Along with those events we

i Ya’II, It is with much sadness that I begin by reporting the recent loss of our longtime brother, Luther “Tudy” Cribb. Tudy was the epitome of a Mason, Shriner, and Hillbillie. He was always there with a smile, a handshake, and a helping hand. Always, a familiar face at the parades, playing his mandolin with the band, Tudy could be found at all the Hillbillie and Shriner’s events. Tudy, was almost, solely responsible for the transformation of the Hillbillies, from riding bicycles, to our modern day motorized fleet, which he lovingly built and maintained. Tudy will be sorely missed at the shack, by all. We send our condolences out to Lady Joyce and Family. The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade (photos right) was attended by the unit, and was a good time as always, for the unit and the crowd. We finished up with a delicious corn beef and cabbage dinner. Special thanks to David Swoope, for cooking for us. A good time was reported by all. Our annual Spring Ceremonial is just around the corner. So now is the time to remind your brothers in blue lodge to get their petitions in!!! Our stated meetings are every 4th Wednesday, and all are invited to come eat with us from 6-7. e first quarter is complete under the leadership of Illustrious Elwood and his Divan with great success and look forward to continued success for the remainder of the year. Provost participated in the Saint Patrick Day Parade with all of the glitz and glamour of a local Mardi Gras. A great time was had by all from breakfast to the refreshment tent at the end despite the rain. (The skies cleared just at step off time). The Spring BBQ fund raiser was a great success thanks to all of the nobility who came out and supported the Provost in this endeavor. French fries by our Fry Masters Butch Casper and Roy McKinney were again consumed with enthusiasm as 100 lbs of spuds were fried to perfection. They were assisted by Mike Cannon. Allan Cannon, Jay White and Gwinn

Dunbar provided a great breakfast for the workers. Thanks to the ladies for again providing a fabulous dessert table. We are always looking for a few good men, come join us, we meet the 2nd Wednesday, of each month at the Temple. Social is at 6:30 PM.

otor Corps once again showed our professional driving skills on the ice during Shrine Night with the Admirals. What a great time had by all and we were glad to see such a large turn out to support such a worth while fundraiser. Many thanks to the Admirals and everyone at Scope for allowing us the opportunity to feel like kids again. On Feb. 28th all of us attended the Potentates Ball at the Shrine Center. This year ball was a 50s theme including 50s dress, music and decorations. All of agreed this was a pleasant surprise and a fun evening. Ill Sir Elwood and his lovely lady Pat did an outstanding job putting this together. Many thanks to both of you for hard work planning such a great evening. Our season opener, The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (top photo) was again great fun and it was nice to see so many units on the street. Again we would like to thank Ill Sir Bill Kern for a great breakfast, always makes the day better. I would like to take a moment to thank everyone with the Chesapeake Shrine Club for allowing The Motor Corps to promote our Shrimp Feast at the Oyster Roast again this year. This gets the ball rolling and sparks a lot of interest for our event, thanks again for your support. Motor Corps once again participated in the Daffodil Parade (bottom photo) in Gloucester and although we enjoy

Just a quick note to let everyone know that “all is well with the team.” The cold weather finally broke and we had our first practice Monday the 13th at Bayside Harley Davison in Portsmouth. We had a nice run with our two new riders Jim Allen & Kevin Riddick. With spring finally here we hope to practice most every Tuesday and fine tune our new eight man team in preparation for the September conventions. We are also planning a ride to Union, West Virginia for the first weekend in June and invite any motorcycle riders that might have interest in what is sure to be an adventure! REETINGS from the KRD. St. Patrick’s Day turned out to be a GREAT beginning of the parade season (photo right). The KRD was there in force and we had a wonderful time in the parade and at the Knights of Columbus afterward. If you were not there, you missed a terrific day. Our Valentine’s Day Dance was a great success and a good time was had by all. We had a record number of attendees who came out to enjoy the delicious food from Pungo Catering and a night of dancing to the beach music sounds of Coolin Out. If you missed it this year, be sure to put it on your book for next year so you can come on out with your sweetheart and have a rip-roaring time! Preparations are underway for the upcoming Temple Open House and Spring Ceremonial. We are gearing up to put on a first rate initiation ceremony for the incoming candidates. Please shake the bushes and check with your lodge brethren to identify potential candidates (I know the lodges in the surrounding districts have been quite busy raising new master masons). We owe it to our masonic brethren to talk with them about Shrinedom and to invite those who are interested to join with us and participate in all the fun and philanthropic activities which have made us famous around the world. As usual, we welcome all Shriners (and want-to-be Shriners ) who may have a desire to participate with us. Come

obles All! We are deep into spring and summer is right around the corner. The thick blanket of pollen has been washed away and the dog days of humidity are just ahead. But as always, regardless of the weather, regardless of the economy and regardless of our numbers, we Shriners have a task to complete. We have accepted the challenge and picked up the gauntlet thrown before us by our predecessors. We will support the Shrine Hospitals and we will help the children. So nobles, clubs and units make your plans and execute. It’s all for the children. The Peninsula Shrine is in full stride as we mark off days of the 2015 calendar. February brought The Divan lead by Illustrious Elwood Pascal to the peninsula for a very well attended meeting. I’m sure Oriental Guide Oscar Obsuna felt as if his pocket had been picked by the time dinner was over. Hmmm...perhaps “fleecing” was more accurate. A good time for sure. March brought the PSC’s 2nd business meeting of 2015. This meeting, as all, was held on the 2nd Monday of odd months. All members are encouraged to attend. The March monthly meeting of the PSC enjoyed Worshipful Brian Croteau as guest speaker. Worshipful Brian is a professor of history at Thomas Nelson Community College and a frequent speaker in all the Blue Lodges of 14 A & B. Worshipful Brian spoke on the architecture of the US Capital building and it’s Masonic as well other symbolism found there, particularly in the famous rotunda.

Then again, Friday and Saturday June 5 and 6th, same times. As the May monthly falls again on Memorial Day and there are no other suitable dates available, the May meeting is cancelled. We are in the process of completing plans for the PSC’s Ladies Night which takes place at the June 22nd Monthly meeting. We will have a repeat guest for this meeting. Virginia Thompson along with mother Heather, my niece. Virginia is now 8 years and has been a Shrine patient for several years up at the Philadelphia Hospital. The annual fishing trip will take place in July this year. The date and location will be announced at the April meeting. Nobles-that about wraps it up for now. oly Cats! There are things going on inside and out at the Temple. Have you been attending? If you have an event and I fail to mention it in my article then it is most likely due to the date the Hi-Noble is being published. That being said let`s get things rolling. On May 28th there will be a Temple Business Meeting the dinner will start at 6:30 and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:30. If you want to be on top of all the business at hand then you need to be there. The very next night on the 29th we kick off the Spring Ceremonial with our customary “Open House.” How many candidates have you signed up? The Ceremonial will begin bright and early Saturday morning. Now it is on to June and we all know what happens in June, The Rodeo. This year’s Rodeo will be held on June 12th and 13th. This is an all hands affair Nobles. Set-up/tear-down/clean-up and last but certainly not lease ticket purchase and sales. And while we are on the subject of ticket sales I would like to define “Rodeo Daddy. A “Rodeo Daddy “is a Noble who returns his tickets to the Temple along with a check for them so that they can be distributed to needy individuals around Tidewater and for this noble endeavor his name will be listed proudly in the next issue of the Hi-Noble under…..wait for it…..”Rodeo Daddy.” If you choose to pay for your tickets and give them out as you see fit you are a “ticket purchaser” and your name will not be listed in the Hi-Noble. TIDEWATER SHRINE CLUB By Noble Scott Traner

reetings from the Tidewater Shrine Club my brother nobles. Spring has finally almost sprung and I have high hopes that it will be here by July. Despite the coolness (not to mention the snow) we have been busy as usual. I want to hit on two Hi-Lights this edition, the paper drive and the Daffodil parade in Gloucester. We had a great turnout of Nobles for the paper drive at the Gloucester Walmart on Easter week end. We worked two days, three two hour shifts per day. We had at least two Nobles on three entrances for all the shifts. This is a good example of the Nobility fulfilling our duty to our children. Special thanks To Noble Rob Parker for setting up schedules and running the drive itself. Extra special thanks go to our “Pote” Elwood who drove over on Good Friday and spent a couple of hours with us. Also to High Priest and Prophet Mike Coffman who came over with his lady Susan and granddaughter and stood with us as we collected on Saturday. And I need to mention the high collector for the weekend was Ian Walters, son of Thomas Walters JR. He just lured the donations in with his great attitude. Nobles I know many of you experience the same emotions on days like this when we meet the public and ask for their support. I know I will never get tired of a father or mother coming up and donating and telling us how we helped their child or someone they knew. How about a former patient telling us that without our support they wouldn’t be walking or maybe even here without our support. And then there is the best for me when the children come up and donate nickels or dimes or maybe even pennies and they will say ”this is for the kids please help them.” These things happen each and every time I am out with my Fez doing support functions. I will never ever get tired of this and I know you all feel the same. This is definitely what it is all about. Anyway we were very successful and I personally thank each and every Noble who helped make this happen. OH! I almost forgot, we raised 2500.00 thanks to a big bump Noble Mark Cook always gives. The Daffodil parade (photos right) might have been the best I have ever been a part of. The support from the Temple was overwhelming. I think we fed over 100 people. Once again it is especially grand to see the excitement from the kids when you talk to them or give a high five and make them feel like part of the parade. They really light up when the Shrine is in the house. Well Nobles that is enough for this edition. With summer coming on we have many things planned as do our entire units and clubs Assoc. Get on out and be a part of the fun, make some new memories and remember “Old good times.” The Tidewater Shrine club meets the third Thursday of

every month and we always invite you to come have dinner with us. We meet at Nicks at the bottom of the Coleman Bridge in Gloucester. Social hour at six and dinner at seven. WILLIAMSBURG SHRINE CLUB By Past President Tom Lasher

he Williamsburg Shrine Club has had a busy first quarter. In January the weather was unusually cold and blustery (and persistent) but we kept the home fires burning with a Club organizational business meeting early on, using it to make plans for events and activities for the upcoming year. In February the persistent cold weather continued but our Khedive Divan brought us warmth in the form of entertainment and information from the Temple. During their Official Visit to our Club our Oriental Guide, Oscar left with his pockets much lighter than when he arrived. But as always, it was a very informative and a fun filled evening. In March our program was presented by Mark Walsh who talked about the life and times of President James Monroe and his accomplishments. Monroe was a member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge No 6 and worked as an apprentice under Thomas Jefferson. He was elected president in 1816 and is known for the “Era of Good Feelings” during his presidency. It was also noted that he “modernized” the Army and Navy during his tenure. It was indeed a very informative evening. Our April program was presented by Brother Sam Welty. Brother Sam presented an autobiographical program about

his life as a “starving artist” who, with the influence of the world famous marine artist Robert Ryland, was able to successfully make his way onto the public arts scene. Sam’s artistic and diversified works include artwork at the Air and Space Museum in Hampton, a wall mural at DePaul Hospital, the Flagship Hotel at the oceanfront, the entrance sign at the entrance of the Norfolk Zoo, as well as other murals at various locations at restaurants, schools, businesses and churches around the Tidewater area. It was an enjoyable and educational evening with Brother Sam, and too, we were glad to hear of our good Brother’s long sought after success. As the weather starts to warm up and we begin to look forward to spring, we look forward to more informative Club programs, and evenings of good food and good fellowship. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month. The social hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM. Come join us. Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. When you get to Williamsburg, take the “Camp Perry” exit off of I-64. At the top of the ramp, turn left. Pass through the first traffic light, then turn right at the next traffic light, and then turn right again at the next traffic light. That is Bypass Rd., or US Rt. 60. The hotel is located at the top of the hill, on the right, next to the Knights Inn 1776.

n the spring young man’s fancy turns to a thoughts of .......... Boats! Or as Mr. Toad said in the book Wind in the Willows, “There is nothing better than messing around in boats.” You can be involved in this wonderful activity simply by joining like-mindedbrothers and their ladies of the Khedive Shrine Yacht club. The members of this award winning organization are all ready frenetically involved in messing around with their boats. Why not come join us? Owning a boat is not required only interested in and love of the water. Frequently some of our brothers with boats are in need of a crew. Our first cruise is a shakedown when we find out what damage the winter activity has caused to our vessels. This year we will be docking at the downtown slips at Hampton Virginia for this activity. Plans are a foot for visits to the lovely Oyster Farm, at Kingso Creek Marina on the Eastern Shore for our traditional memorial day cruise and remembrance service. Other fun visits include Deltaville and Gloucester Point Virginia and topped off by the three day annual rendezvous of the seven other mid-Atlantic temple

Yacht Club at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade shrine yacht clubs. This year’s three-day event is to be held in Chesterton Maryland. The traditional local highlight of the year is always the Potentates cruise to Smithfield Virginia. On most of our stops we are joined by club members who travel by “Land Yachts” We are so fortunate to be living near the Chesapeake Bay one of the worlds greatest boat superhighways. Welcome President Noble Jody Dudley and BOD for 2015. Belated congratulations to Ill. Potentate Elwood and his 2014 Divian being elevated up one position. Congratulations to Noble Oscar Obsuna on being elected Oriental Guide. All were elected at Temple business meeting, Saturday, January 3. In January, the Club had its Memorial Service commemorating our departed Nobles in 2014. February, we were honored having Ill. Potentate Elwood and Divan make their Official Visit. March, Brethren from our Blue Lodges were honored. April, was Father/Son/Daughter Night and was well attended. May, we will be honoring Past Potentates of Khedive Temple. The Club is offering a $500.00 Scholarship to a worthy and needy student, to further their higher education. The Club is making plans for our annual fundraiser; banner rentals and poster sales.
